Saying, “enough is enough”, Premier McKeeva Bush has filed suit in the Grand Court charging Hurley’s Entertainment, its owner Randy Merren and former MLA Daphne Orrett, with defamation in May this year.

At the same time, Mr Bush last Monday lodged a similar suit against Cayman News Service, naming Cayman Brac’s Nicky Watson and West Bay reporter Wendy Ledger for a 19 May article he claims was “falsely and maliciously published”.

While unspecified in the writ, Mr Bush seeks “compensatory, aggravated and exemplary damages”.

Mr Bush told iNews yesterday that he had grown weary of “the lies”.

“My wife and family have had enough of this. This affects us. I used to ignore it, even when there were lies, but I can’t ignore it anymore,” he said. “For a long time I have asked the press to be more responsible and they have refused.

Parents and kids had great fun building sand creations to raise money for Brandon McTaggart, a four-year old with Cerebral Palsey.

Altogether more than 20 families took part in the sand creation competition at Seven Mile Beach, raising a total of CI$5000 for little Brandon’s medical expenses through local charity Cayman’s ARK. This is the third year that Cayman’s ARK, which stands for Acts of Random Kindness, has held the competition, just one of the many ways the charity has helped all kinds of good causes, both here and overseas.

In previous years it was called the sandcastle competition, but this year the name was changed to sand creation competition to reflect the diversity of things that were made - ranging from mermaids to cars to sharks. There was even a mini Emerald Sound construction, complete with a big South Sound road bridge.

Money was mostly raised by charging CI$25 per pitch, but also by charging for other fun activities, including a go on the many different non-motorised items of sports equipment which had been donated for one hour by Red Sail Sports.

“The sand creation competition is a perfect example of Cayman’s ARK endeavours to encourage the community to work as one for the greater good. It’s very moving to see all the families and children working together, having fun all the while blessing little Brandon’s family.

“It also created tremendous awareness not only about Brandon but about the condition and the hardships that come to any family dealing with that kind of crisis,” member of

Cayman’s ARK, Tara Nielsen, said.

There were many different categories for winners, and lots of wonderful prizes, including tickets to Hollywood Theatres, a Moby Dick tour to Stingray City and a trip in the Nautilus Submarine for the whole family.

Cayman’s ARK’s next big fundraiser is going to be called Moving Art for ARK. Artists Avril Ward, Sue Howe and Renate Steffer will be donating 50 percent from the sale of their paintings to Moving Art for ARK at the 29 October private gallery showing by the three local artists. Phone linked to Facebook leads to burglary suspect ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A New Mexico man is facing burglary charges after authorities say he broke into an Albuquerquearea home then left behind a cell phone linked to his Facebook profile.

KOB-TV reports that Bernalillo County sheriff’s deputies used the Facebook app to find and arrest 24-year-old Oscar Martinez last week. Deputies say they found his cell phone at the scene of the break-in.

The criminal complaint says a family interrupted the burglary when they came home and found Martinez, who fired six shots from a BB gun at them as he fled.

He is facing charges including aggravated burglary with a deadly weapon and violation of his parole.

It was unclear if Martinez has hired an attorney.

BELGRADE, Mont. (AP) — A Montana woman says she knows it sounds mean, but she hopes her horse at least tried to kick the person that cut the hair off her tail.

Belgrade-area resident Alisha Novotny tells KTVM-TV that she noticed her mare, Raz, was missing the hair from her tail last Sunday morning.

She says it looks like whomever did it “just grabbed pretty fast and chopped.”

Novotny says horsehair can be valuable — especially white hair like Raz’s — for making belts and bridles and key chains. She says she felt “violated” when she realized a stranger had been in the horse’s pen.

Gallatin County authorities say this isn’t the first time a horse owner in the area has found an animal missing hair from its tail. Officials with the Belgrade Police Department say it’s been an ongoing issue for about six months.

I need to retain my dignity and I am not going to stoop to his level, but I I will start from the beginning and I will not refrain from disclosure.”

Dr Devi Shetty, the Indian heart surgeon who is building a health city in the Cayman Island has won The Economist’s 2011 award for business-process innovation.

The Economist magazine acknowledged Dr Devi Shetty’s skill as a surgeon but said his innovative contribution to global health care was what won him the prestigious accolade.

Tom Standage, Digital Editor at The Economist and chairman of the judges panel said: “He is renowned for his skill as a surgeon, but we are recognising his additional talent as an innovator, by naming him the winner of our business-process innovation award.”

Dr Shetty founded his Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospital in Bangalore in 2001 with 1,000 beds, compared with an average of 160 in American heart hospitals.

He has proposed a multimillion dollar medical complex to be built in East End with the first phase due to open in March 2013.

The 140 bed hospital will treat patients from all over the world and will spread over a number of years to create a world class medical centre.

Dr Shetty is a specialist in pediatric and cardiac care. He has already donated a catheter lab to the George Town Hospital.

The police officers here from the UK to fight crime will not be living in five-star luxury – but instead will stay in low-cost accommodation, the governor has revealed.

Around 20 detectives from Merseyside and the North West of England have been drafted in to help investigate the spate of murders that has seen five people shot dead in a little over nine days.

Earlier this week, the most senior officer who came to Cayman, Merseyside Police Chief Constable Jon Murphy, was pictured in British newspapers snorkelling, swimming and sunbathing.

Yesterday Governor Duncan Taylor said he was “disappointed” with the story that appeared in the Daily Mail and said it was a deliberate attempt to embarrass Mr Murphy.

Governor Taylor added: “There was no attempt to write a balanced piece on what they came here for or did. We are not aware that the Daily Mail spoke to any of the people Jon Murphy met during his visit.

“I am delighted that Mr Murphy and his colleagues were able to come out here at short notice. They were able to agree the terms of reference to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Mr Taylor added: “The expertise and experience they bring will be invaluable to the RCIPS. With their support, RCIPS will be able to build on the excellent work they have already put in, in response to the

recent murders.

“This is a challenging time for us all and we are very fortunate to be able to draw on the assistance of professional and dedicated officers from England at such short notice.

“Costs are deliberately being kept to a minimum. All 20 officers are staying in low-cost accommodation and all, including Mr Murphy and his colleagues, travelled economy class. “

Financial hat trick for top performing Cayman Islands Cayman Finance Chairman Mr. Richard Coles has congratulated the financial services industry for achieving yet another top ranking in the highly respected Banker’s ranking of international financial centers.

The 2011 Banker’s ranking revealed that the Cayman Islands is once again ranked number one in the Specialised Financial Centres category for the third year in a row, having topped the chart in 2009 and 2010.

“This is yet again excellent news and a testament to the hard work and efforts on the part of both the financial services industry for delivering excellence in service and to the regulatory authorities for maintaining high international standards” said Mr. Coles.

According to The Banker’s website, the ranking of international financial

centres is based on data from a range of sources, including financial markets indicators, economic potential and business environment factors. The ranking focuses on the level of international business and the value offered to international institutions seeking to expand their international operations.

Interestingly the ranking revealed that the Cayman Islands dominated the category as its score of 42.59 is 8 points clear of the next highest ranking which went to Guernsey with a score of 34.48.

The Banker survey also revealed that Cayman’s score was lower than that of 2010, and it said that this might be due to the more in-depth questionnaire, which was used, and that this impacted

other jurisdictions as well.

Mr. Coles saw this as a sign of the jurisdiction’s strength.

“The fact that The Banker improved its assessment with a more detailed questionnaire in 2011 and the Cayman Islands remain at top with a wide margin is proof that this jurisdiction can hold its own against international standards relating to service or regulation, and I am confident that we will continue to do so,” said Mr. Coles.

Woman hatched plan to steal baby MILWAUKEE (AP) — Desperate to give her boyfriend a son but unable to conceive, Annette Morales-Rodriguez faked a pregnancy for months, court documents say, then began trolling Milwaukee’s streets for pregnant women in hopes of stealing an unborn baby.

After two days of searching, the 33-year-old woman finally spotted Maritza Ramirez-Cruz, who was just a week from her due date. MoralesRodriguez lured the young Puerto Rican immigrant into her home, according to court documents, and beat her with a baseball bat before cutting her full-term fetus from her womb with an X-Acto knife, killing

both the mother and the baby.

Morales-Rodriguez now faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide while armed and firstdegree intentional homicide of an unborn child while armed. She faces mandatory life in prison if convicted.

She told investigators she had grown increasingly desperate as her own supposed due date approached. She said she planned for two weeks to find a pregnant woman, according to the criminal complaint filed Monday.

Morales-Rodriguez told investigators she offered RamirezCruz a ride, and the younger woman accepted, the criminal complaint said.

Eva Longoria backs migrant documentary LOS ANGELES (AP) — Eva Longoria says she lent her support to “The Harvest,” a documentary about child migrant laborers, not just because of her Latin American roots but also because she wants to know where her food comes from and take responsibility for it.

Ukraine’s Tymoshenko sentenced to seven years in jail KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko was yesterday found guilty of abuse of office and sentenced to seven years in jail, in a trial widely condemned in the West as politically motivated.

Are we doing enough for our youth?

We are spending thousands, colin.wilson@ieyenews.com if not millions, in policing, the judicial and prisons. We spend thousands to try and keep ourselves safe from intruders entering our homes. The business community spends even more to prevent shoplifting and thievery.

How much do we spend on our youths? On the 25th July, Ban Ki-Moon, the UN Secretary General remarked at the General Assembly, “Failing to invest in our youth is a false economy.” He was speaking at the conclusion of the International Year of Youth. He went on to say, “The international community must work to expand the horizons of opportunity for young women and men and answer their legitimate demands for dignity and decent work. The global economic crisis and austerity measures in many countries are constraining these opportunities. When youth lack opportunity they are more easily led to crime and violence, to drugs and risky sex, and the slippery slope to the bottom of the social scale.

“The fires have travelled far since then. The Facebook generation is showing a growing resolve to change our world and a capacity to make things happen. They are bringing their energy and courage to some of the most difficult issues we face. Young people are standing up for the rights of those who suffer discrimination based on gender, race and sexual orientation. They are confronting sensitive issues — talking

to their peers and working to stop the spread of HIV and AIDS. And they are leading the charge to adopt a green model for development.

“Young people often understand better than older generations that we can and must transcend our religious and cultural differences in order to reach our shared goals.

Our job, distinguished representatives of the General Assembly, is to work for them — and with them — to make sure they can inherit the world they want; the world promised by the United Nations Charter; a world built on dialogue and mutual understanding.”

So what are we doing here? Recently, Hon. Mark Scotland, the Youth Minister, said, “We’re not reinventing the wheel; for there are many good programmes already underway.”

The Minister encouraged continued collaborative efforts between the National Youth Council and government ministries and portfolios, and encouraged private sector companies to become more involved in youth development – citing the ongoing Superior Auto training programme as a good example.

How much do we actually spend on our youth projects?

What proportion of our annual budget goes to youth programmes? How much does the private sector give? Last of all, do we listen to our youth?

Whatever the answers, we are obviously not doing enough.

Suspense is rapidly escalating as to whether Jamaica’s new Prime Minister to be, Andrew Holness will be assigned Member of Parliament, MP, for the Western Kingston constituency, hometown of the former area leader, Christopher “Dudus” Coke.

If the incoming Prime Minister inherits the constituency, he could be charged with the responsibility of improving the rapport between the community and the party, following the extradition of Mr. Coke, and forced to juggle the task of appeasing the Jamaica Labour Party loyalists while simultaneously transforming the constituency’s image.

Suspense is also rife as to whether the new leader can fulfill his proposed mandate, to eradicate political activism, which pundits claim is entrenched in the lifestyle of some communities.

Prime Minister elect, Andrew Holness, told the Jamaican press that despite being the political representative for a garrison community, he has no personal desire to uphold the stigma.

“I have been accused of being a “garrison” politician because I have a garrison community. I don’t believe that is fair,” said Mr. Holness.

Political analysts have said that affiliation with gangs has been used by politicians as a traditional tool of voter manipulation and control and for the foundation of garrison communities.

People’s National party, PNP, have long been accused of harbouring criminal elements and political activists.

In a highly contentious and ardent mood, Jamaica’s soon to be Prime Minister, Mr. Andrew Holness says he has no intention of entertaining the emergence or support of any more “Area Leaders” or “Dons.”

In his address to the nation, through a Jamaican news media, the politician distanced himself from the embracing of any criminal element in his constituency, either as “Area Leaders” or community “Dons.”

Mr. Holness also pledges not to allocate or utilise public funds in the accommodation of any “Don Man” activities. The soon to be JLP Leader made the starting revelation that residents of some communities are already too adjusted to the “Don Man” styled leadership to appreciate change.

Mr Holness, also indicated that financial provision by government for elaborate funerals for community members is a tradition that he does not intend to continue.

support “Don Man-ship.” People were upset, even though I built four basic schools, built a community centre, and is now going to build a police station.

“I have cleaned all the gullies down there, [the referred to constituency] three times over, did a wall fence project, and corrected their water problems but yet; I don’t get credit for that, because what people want is for me to use public resources to pay for funerals.” said Holness.

Referring to the constituency which he represents the incoming leader said: “Who is the “Don” for West central St. Andrew?”

Following the arrest and extradition of the former Tivoli Gardens, [West Kingston] Area Leader/Don, Christopher “Dudus” Coke, the constituency has been functioning without a conspicuous leadership figure.

The constituency has a history of aggressive loyalty to the Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, and is arguably the Party’s most valuable support base in all their elections.

West Kingston, is widely regarded as a political garrison, and has recently incurred the stigma of being the place where the departing JLP leader, Bruce Golding, suffered his infamous “fall from grace.”

Mr. Holness’s ambition to rid Jamaican politics of the so-called, “garrison” component is not the first of its kind by a JLP leader.

In his acceptance of the honour to lead the JLP, and the country, in 2007, the outgoing Prime Minister, Bruce Golding expressed his intention to alienate the party and its image from any sort of affiliation with questionable community figures.

A wave of simultaneous concerts around the globe which took place on World Hospice and Palliative Care Day last Saturday October 8th included a concert here, on Grand Cayman. And what a concert it was.

A packed, almost full house, at the 900 seat Arts and Recreation Centre at Camana Bay, were treated to an evening of entertainment that left everyone crying, gasping, laughing, applauding, cheering and wanting more. The full Cayman National Choir and Orchestra under the baton of the incredible Sue Horrocks, soloist Isabella Rooney who is only 13 and is the Butterfield Young Musician of the year 2011, the Cayman Prep School Choir, and International soprano from the UK Miss Lisa Carlisle, all for the price of $10! Yes, $10!! Children under 12 - $5! Can anyone name another event of this magnitude, with this talent, including an International Star who has toured the World, for such a miserly entrance fee in a modern airconditioned building where everyone can sit down in comfort?

The event was advertised as “One voice … Many voices”. It certainly lived up to the advertising and more. The evening started with an introduction from the beautiful M.C. Cynthia Hue, who spoke about Hospice Care and how dear it was to her, almost breaking down as she told us of her own experience with a loved one who needed Hospice Care.

Director of the Choir and Orchestra, Sue Horrocks was introduced to a standing ovation and we were treated to a rousing rendition of “Gloria”, “A Grand Night for Singing” and a James

Bond medley.

By the buzz going through the audience when the guest soloist, Lisa Carlise was announced, and now no stranger to Cayman having performed three concerts in Cayman, we were expecting something special. Despite nursing a very bad cold and chest infection since she arrived and some doubt whether she would be able to perform, she did not disappoint.

Soaring effortlessly to heights that left us incredulous she sang the operatic piece “Lo Son L’umile Ancella - Cilea”.

Next came a duet with Lisa singing with Cayman’s young star Isabella Rooney, Mozart’s “Sull’Aria.”

“The Gift of Music” followed sung by a large group of youngsters from Cayman Prep with Lisa doing the solo work. What a thrill it must have been for these youngsters to sing alongside her. They followed with “Siya Hamba”.

The first part of the concert was wrapped up with Lisa singing with the National Choir “What I Did For Love’ and then for me the best item “Music of the Night”. I have always loved Sarah Brightman’s solo on this piece

from “Phantom of the Opera” (she was the first person ever to play Christine) but I have to revise my opinion. Lisa’s version was even more powerful and many in the audience were rubbing the tears from their eyes.

Space doesn’t allow me to say much more. The second half continued in similar fashion with Isabella Rooney doing most of the solo work to much admiration and applause. Lisa’s only solo contribution was a very funny rendering of Tesori’s “The Girl in 14g,” changing her voice well to sing and ‘act’ out all the many diverse characters in the song. Very funny and a very difficult piece to sing which she achieved to many cheers and claps.

Sadly the evening had to come to an end with everyone on stage for “One Voice” and the whole audience rising to give a standing ovation. A vote of thanks was given by the Hospice Medical Director, Dr. Virginia Hobday.

National Museum gets Director Seasoned archaeologist Dr. Margaret E. Leshikar-Denton has taken the reins at the Cayman Islands National Museum.

While only in the Director’s chair for a week, Dr. Leshikar-Denton is no stranger to the Museum. Before her latest appointment, she has worked there as an archaeologist for 16 years doing research and developing displays.

In addition, she made invaluable contributions to the Cayman Islands’ shipwreck register and was instrumental in developing the maritime trail.

“I have great respect and appreciation for the heritage and culture of the Cayman Islands. It is therefore a privilege to be entrusted with the leadership and vision of the National Museum,” she said.

Dr. Leshikar-Denton is a serving member of the Cayman Islands Visual Arts Society, Orchid Society, National Gallery and she is a life member of the Cayman Islands National Trust.

The new Museum Director holds a doctorate in Anthropology (Nautical Archaeology) and honed her archaeological skills in many countries, including Mexico, Spain, Jamaica, Turks and Caicos and Turkey.

She first came to the Cayman Islands in 1980 when a team from the Institute of Nautical Archaeology (based at Texas A&M University) was invited by the government to survey the Islands’ waters for shipwrecks.

Six years later, she accepted a full-time position at the Museum and moved permanently to the Cayman Islands.

Dr. Leshikar-Denton is a member of the Register of Professional Archaeologists, has worked as an independent researcher and has served as the senior representative for Central America and the Caribbean on the World Archaeological Congress. She was also the UNESCO representative at the Latin American and Caribbean Technical Commission on Underwater Cultural Heritage Meetings in 1998 and 1999.

“We are very excited to welcome Dr. Leshikar-Denton as new Museum Director. Her local knowledge combined with her unique experience will certainly ensure that the National Museum remains one of Cayman’s

premiere cultural entities. Moreover, we expect that under her leadership we will see many meaningful initiatives that will support the preservation of Caymanian culture,” commented Minister for Culture, the Hon. Mark Scotland, JP. National Museum Board Chairperson Jeana Ebanks echoed the Minister’s view, adding: “In her previous tenure at the National Museum, Dr. Leshikar-Denton has shown a deep personal dedication to, and respect for, Caymanian culture.

“She is adept at forging partnerships to attain major programme objectives and enjoys the widespread respect of her peers and colleagues. In addition, she has earned the complete confidence of the Board of Governors to guide the Museum competently.

The Cancer Society has played an integral role in the kick-off and opening of our children’s Summer Camp. Their Project Coordinator, Vicki Anderson, attended our first week of Summer Camp and spoke to our campers about the importance of sun safety and using sunscreen, hats, and long clothing to prevent sun damage and skin cancer. The presentation was engaging, informative, and tailored to our young audience. It was the perfect way to set the standard for summer sun safety for our children and the entire Summer Camp. We are looking forward to the Cancer Society’s return for our next summer season!

A top corporate trainer recently prepared over 100 staff members to anticipate, monitor and adapt to change, while at the same time enjoying the growth process.

Driving licencing requirements when migrating to Canada Notice to Canadian citizens and/or persons seeking to reside and drive a motor vehicle in Canada: It is mandatory that persons migrating to Canada first obtain a letter from the Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing outlining their drivers licence history and confirming the years spent in the Cayman Islands.

The Canadian Licensing Authority will not issue a Canadian drivers licence without this letter issued by

the Cayman Islands Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licence (DVDL).

DVDL can provide migrants with a letter validating the history of the drivers’ licence for a fee of CI$75.00 or US$91.46.

If paying with a cheque, drawn from a bank in the Cayman Islands, the cheque must be made payable to the Cayman Islands Government.

One has the option of making a

credit/debit card payment with a card issued by Visa or Mastercard. A three (3) day notice is required when making application.

If one requires driving convictions this may be obtained from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service.

The betrothal seemed to her quite natural; Rast and Anne had always been together in the past, and now they would always be together in the future; she was content that it was so.

She knew so little of the outside world that few forebodings as to her own immediate present troubled her. She was on her way to a school where she would study hard, so as soon to be able to teach, and help the children; the boys were to be educated one by one, and after the first year, perhaps, she could send for Tita, since Miss Lois never understood the child aright, failing to comprehend her peculiar nature, and making her, poor little thing, uncomfortable. It would be a double relief—to Miss Lois as well as Tita. It was a pity that her grandaunt was so hard and ill tempered; but probably she was old and infirm. Perhaps if she could see Tita, she might take a fancy to the child; Tita was so small and so soft-voiced, whereas she, Anne, was so overgrown and awkward.

She gave a thought of regret to her own deficiencies, but hardly a sigh.

They were matters of fact, which she had long ago accepted. The coast fire had now faded into a line of red dots and a dull light above them; she knelt down and prayed, not without the sadness, which a lonely young traveller might naturally feel on the broad dark lake.

At the lower-lake port she was met by an old French priest, one of Père Michaux’s friends, who took her to the railway station in a carriage, bought her ticket, checked her trunk, gave her a few careful words of instruction as to the journey, and then, business matters over, sat down by her side and talked to her with enchanting politeness and ease until the moment of departure.

Miss Lois had the children, and of course could not leave them.

“I would go myself if there was any necessity for it,” said Père Michaux, “but there is not. Let me arrange it, and I promise you that Anne shall reach her school in safety; I will have competent persons to meet her all along the route—unless, indeed, you have friends of your own upon whom you prefer to rely?”

This was one of the little winds which Père Michaux occasionally sent over the self- esteem of his two Protestant companions: he could not help it. Dr. Gaston frowned: he had not an acquaintance between New York and the island, and Père Michaux knew it. But Miss Lois, undaunted, rushed into the fray.

“Oh, certainly, it would be quite easy for us to have her met by friends on the way,” she began, making for the moment common

and Protestant cause with Dr. Gaston; “it would require only a few letters. In New England I should have my own family connections to call upon—persons of the highest respectability, descendants, most of them, of the celebrated patriot Israel Putnam.”

“But unfortunately, as Anne is going to New York, not Boston, my connections do not live along the route, exactly,” continued Miss Lois, the adverb standing for a small matter of a thousand miles or so; “nor,” she added, again admitting Dr. Gaston to a partnership, “can we make them.”

“There remain, then, the pastors of your church,” said the priest.

“Certainly—the pastors. It will be the simplest thing in the world for Dr. Gaston to write to them; they will be delighted to take charge of any friend of ours.”

The chaplain pushed his wig back a little, and murmured, “Church Almanac.”

First ask yourself if your workout was intense enough to need a recovery snack or meal.

Did you break a sweat during your workout? If you had a short, light workout and your skin remains dry, it’s good to rehydrate with water, but not necessary to recover with food or a sugary beverage.

Was your heart rate elevated?

Exercising at a low–intensity rate for a short period of time is better than no exercise at all, but you won’t deplete your glycogen stores or tear up muscle tissue during a low–intensity workout.

Was your breathing difficult?

A 60-minute moderate intensity class can elevate your heart rate and leave you breathing hard at times, which means you’re burning calories and earning the health benefits. Enjoy your post–workout healthy snack, but count it toward your total daily caloric intake, not as a way to justify a recovery meal.

If you’re truthful with yourself and pay close attention to how hard you work during exercise, you’ll get to know your body and learn how to refuel for energy versus eat out of habit or due to stress, boredom or other reason. Your workout can never make up for a bad diet.

Building the wealth of Cayman “Building the Wealth of Cayman through Quality Early Childhood Care and Education” is the theme of the free Professional Development Conference which will be held on October 20th to 22nd, 2011 at the Ritz Carlton.

Organised and hosted by the Cayman Islands Early Childhood Association (CIECA), the weekend will begin with a Pre-conference session for parents of children birth to eight years of age on Thursday October 20th, at 7:00pm.

This “parents only” session will feature an opening activity by Hylton Grace and a presentation by Educator and Musician, Maryann Harman on “Getting your children ready for life through music and play”.

On Friday October 21st, 2011 there will be an interactive music concert for children only at 10:00am at the Cayman Islands Baptist Church on Pedro Castle Road in

Savannah.

Maryann Harman will engage children in music and movement activities using some of the many songs she has written and taught to children over the years internationally.

At 7:00pm on Friday October 21stat the Ritz Carlton, there will be an official launching of the conference with a VIP reception for dignitaries, keynote speakers and workshop presenters.

FIFA begins hearing Caribbean bribery cases

ZURICH (AP) — The latest wave of FIFA election bribery cases began yesterday, as 15 Caribbean soccer officials started explaining their part in an alleged plot involving former presidential candidate Mohamed bin Hammam.

FIFA said its ethics committee would hear the defendants over three days, and was expected to deliver verdicts on Friday.

The 15 officials from 11 Caribbean countries are accused of accepting $40,000 cash payments in Trinidad during Bin Hammam’s laterabandoned challenge to FIFA President Sepp Blatter.

They were charged after FIFA appointed former FBI director Louis Freeh to continue leading an investigation that began in May. FIFA’s gravest scandal in 107 years has removed two of its most influential powerbrokers — Asian football president Bin Hammam and FIFA vice president Jack Warner — from office after a combined 43 to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

The Haitian official is among five national association presidents answering charges this week, including one of soccer’s most senior women officials: Franka Pickering of the British Virgin Islands.

Former international referee Mark Bob Forde of Barbados has also

been charged and faces a ban from soccer duty.

Along with Bin Hammam in July, FIFA’s ethics panel suspended two Caribbean Football Union members of staff after ruling that they distributed $40,000 cash payments in brown envelopes in a Trinidad hotel.

Caribbean Football Union vice president Colin Klass, a longtime Warner ally, received a 26-month FIFA ban after a separate hearing last month.

The Guyana federation president lost his seat on FIFA’s futsal and beach soccer committee.

Qatari candidate bin Hammam withdrew his election bid three days before the FIFA poll in June.

Blatter was left unopposed to receive a fourth four-year presidential term, and was endorsed by 186 FIFA members, including most Caribbean islands.

Blatter is scheduled on Oct. 21 to provide details of his promised anticorruption project to clean up world soccer and its damaged image.

LONDON (AP) — The future of London’s Olympic Stadium will be opened up to a new bidding process after a disputed deal to award the flagship venue to West Ham soccer club was scrapped amid mounting legal challenges.

The $760 million stadium will remain in public ownership after the 2012 Olympics and be rented out to an anchor tenant, the government said Tuesday.

West Ham said it will bid again under the new terms that could be more financially favourable for the east London club, which was relegated from the Premier League in May. The drawn-out wrangling for control of the stadium has been increasingly acrimonious since West Ham was selected ahead of London rival Tottenham in February as the long-term tenant.

“The action we have taken today is about removing the uncertainty — the process had become bogged down in legal paralysis,” British sports minister Hugh Robertson said.

“We know there is huge interest in the stadium out there from private operators and football clubs and crucially we remove any uncertainty.

“This is not a white elephant stadium where no one wants it. We have had two big clubs fighting tooth and nail to get it.”

Tottenham mounted a full legal challenge against the decision

by West Ham’s local authority to provide a $63 million loan to fund the second-tier club’s move into the stadium. The case was due to be heard in court next week.

Four members of the Cayman Youth sailing Team recently travelled to the Bahamas to take part in the Bahamas National Optimist Championships.

The team have been sailing Optimists for less than a year and are used to racing against just a handful of others.

Coach Raph Harvey felt that they had been training hard and the time was right to test them against the more rigorous challenges posed by an overseas regatta. “There is a huge difference between racing against six other people that you know well, and starting a race with 80 other boats that are unknown to you”.

The Optimist sailing dinghy is one of the most popular one-design sailboats for youth sailors in the world and is ideal for both novice and experienced sailors up to the ages of 16.

The Bahamas National Optimist Championships is the most anticipated event on the Bahamas Sailing Association calendar. The regatta was hosted by the Grand Bahama Yacht Club in Freeport, Grand Bahama on the 1st and 2nd of October 2011.

Seventy six sailors came from Grand Bahama, Abaco, Eleuthera, Nassau, Long Island, Florida and UK. The sailors were divided into two fleets,

Championship (experienced sailors) and Green (sailors who have been sailing for less than a year).

In the Championship fleet from Cayman were: Florence Allan and Pablo Bertran who sailed in the red fleet (age 13 to 15). Florence sailed fantastically well to come 5th overall, 3rd in her age range and top girl overall. Pablo sailed a consistent regatta finishing 11th in his fleet and 17th overall. Allena Rankine sailed in the younger division, the blue fleet, and took 5th spot and 2nd girl overall.

Finley McDougall who has only been sailing for a year was placed in the Green fleet. He quickly established his dominance and sailed extremely

well taking 1st place.

The conditions were light and very shifty on both days. Winds ranged from 4 – 9 knots and medium chop.

Races were generally 40 - 45 minutes long and required a lot of patience from the kids.

Coach Raph Harvey was thrilled with all the results and said, “For our sailors to take 5th, 9th and 17th out of 34 sailors in a national championship was much better than we had ever hoped and for Finley to take 1st place out of the 45 sailors in Green fleet is just outstanding. I think Finley was able to excel because he has a never give-up attitude and is never put off by not winning.”
