Tad Stoner The Canadian government will send a team to Cayman in the next few weeks, talking to Airports Authority officials about redevelopment of both the Owen Roberts and Gerrard Smith terminals and runways.

The group arrives in the wake of the 1 August Memorandum of Understanding between the Cayman Islands Airports Authority (CIAA) and Ottawa’s Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC), and will discuss expansion plans and financing for the multi-million-dollar project.

Meanwhile, longtime aviation expert, Island Air operations administrator and University College of the Cayman Islands air transport lecturer Edward Jerrard says the redevelopment, to be effective, needs to address enormous questions of commercial expansion, infrastructure improvement and financing.

Those questions, he said, are far in excess of the Cayman Islands Airports Authority 2004 and 2006 master plan.

Be a parent, not a best friend Kevin Creary Television star Cathy Tyson is urging people to stop being their children’s best friend – and instead concentrate on parenting.

Mrs Tyson, who is also an active social worker and counsellor is appealing to parents to show more responsibility in raising their children - and to stop trying to raise them as their friends.

“At age 13, why did you let your child drive your car? At the age of 17,why did you let your child sleep over? We need to look at what we can do differently,” she said.

“He [your child] is not just at Joe’s house. Who else is in Joe’s house?

That could be the place where the child is getting what they shouldn’t get. I would rather to err on the side of caution,” she said.

According to Mrs. Tyson, host of the popular local television series, “Lighten Up.”

The responsibility to provide effective parenting cannot be achieved while parents act their kid’s age.

“I don’t want to be my kids friends, I am not their buddy, and they are not on my level, maybe when they are in there 30’s. There has never been a moment in life with my kids when it was not clear to them who is in charge. I want to be someone my kids love and trust and respect, who loves them the most in the world.” she said.

Mrs. Tyson says she is very concerned

about the examples being set for some of Cayman’s Youths by their parents.

“A parent who was hanging out in a night club with their child, smoking cigarettes and drinking beer, ended up eventually having to visit the same child in Northward Prison.

“The home is the right place to start proper parenting.”

Mrs. Tyson, who holds a degree in psychology and have recently completed her Masters in social work, have almost single handedly raised three kids, as she and her husband were separated for many years before he passed away.

The television show host said she is a firm believer in growing kids with discipline and rules, and is surprised at some of the access available to unmonitored kids.

She said: “If my kids are angry they are not allowed to go and lock up in their room, they are not allowed to close the door. You don’t go sitting up in there conjuring all kinds of thoughts with the devil making all kinds of suggestions in your head.”

Another big concern, according to the career woman and mother is, the availability of uncontrolled, or monitored computer and advanced phones access.

“When I think about how much computer has impacted our children, I don’t think it has been positive.

It should be completely monitored considering what the kids can have access to while using it. My 17-yearold daughter did not get a Blackberry until just a few months ago, and had no Facebook.

“She didn’t get her cell phone until last year at Christmas, at the age of 16 years.”

The TV personality has written a book called, “I’m somebody’s Mamma,” which speaks of her life and career and the challenges of being a single mother.

iStrange New face of woman attacked by chimp HARTFORD, Connecticut (AP) — The new face of a woman who was mauled by a chimpanzee two years ago has been revealed for the first time in photos showing a startling transformation.

The pictures of Charla Nash were first shown on NBC’s “Today” show Thursday morning. Nash, who had a face transplant in May, didn’t appear on the program because family members said she was too weak to do an interview.

Photos were later released by Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where the surgery was performed.

The 57-year-old Nash was attacked in Stamford in February 2009 by a friend’s 200-pound chimpanzee, which ripped off her nose, lips, eyelids and hands. The attack left her blind.

Nash said in a statement she’s looking forward to doing things she once took for granted, including being able to smell, eat normally, speak clearly and kiss loved ones.

They imply costs of $500 million to move buildings, expand passenger terminals, create international cargo facilities, build a 2,000-foot runway extension into North Sound and overhaul legislation to make the Civil Aviation Authority into a genuinely independent regulator.

Don Olsen, who signed the airport memorandum for the CCC, and serves as its director of business development and contract structuring, told iNews that the meetings would determine “what the CIAA wants, and it has to be financially feasible.”

“The goal of any airport development is to increase traffic, help passengers and increase revenues for the government. That means attracting bigger airlines so people are spending money, and that all works to the benefit of hotels, restaurants and tourism,” Mr Olsen said.

“CCC” he said, “will put into place

a bankable document as to what the Cayman Islands government would like and if it is feasible to be done.

Once we have that in place, then the CCC is in a position to say whether we want to move forward.”

CCC will also identify financing options, including commercial banks that would negotiate with the Ministry of Finance. More likely, Mr Olsen indicated, was a “BOT”, a build-operate-transfer agreement giving CCC the right to administer the airport for a number of years, repaying construction costs and garnering a profit.

“It’s still very early, and the technical visit in the next few weeks will determine that. We have a lot of homework and due diligence still to do.

relocations, cargo, passenger terminal and apron development.

General aviation developments, including hangers and taxiways, dominate the second stage, while runway extension, relocation of the fuel farm and other improvements run through 2015.

“It is so out of date, they really need to start again,” Mr Jerrard said.

Shifting the runway 100 feet northward, then extending it from 7,000 feet to 9,000 feet – on pillars into North Sound -- should come first, attracting new airlines, larger aircraft and long-haul flights from Europe and both Central and South America.

Taxiways will need to be moved and parking aprons expanded.

Boosting the airport’s profitability will require expansion of nonaviation business -- London’s Heathrow Airport, derives 70% of its income from non-aviation activities, he said.

Cayman Airways will need to pay landing fees, reducing costs to other airlines, a cargo hub should be developed and most buildings must be moved.

“They need to get $500 million in the next 25 years and then another $500 million in operating revenues,” Mr Jerrard said, pointing out that the limited area for the airport in the master plan was inadequate .

“You need to have the capability of expansion,” he said, and the 2006 master plan did not permit modular additions. “You have to redesign all the buildings for today’s requirements, not for six years ago.”

Mr Jerrard remained skeptical that CIAA would mandate the required changes, fearing the CCC would be unable to gain Department of Tourism agreement, while Cayman Airways appeared unlikely to relinquish annual subsidies of at least $15 million.

“These are all pieces of the jigsaw puzzle,” he said, pointing to the necessary political will. “It’s not a huge job, but it’s a huge commitment.” tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

Summer Programme Improves Literacy Levels

A recently concluded summer literacy programme offered jointly by the Ministry and Department of Education Services, targets students before literacy struggles begin.

During the programme, teachers used the Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention kit, a supplementary tool designed to help educators provide powerful, daily small-group instruction for children in younger grades.

The tool has three systems with lessons progressing from beginner reading in kindergarten to beginner reading in Year 2.

Lessons include a combination of reading, writing, phonics and word study, with specific work on sounds, letters and words, in activities designed to help children notice the details of written language.

It also emphasises comprehension strategies and vocabulary expansion, while providing opportunities for students to write about reading so

they can learn a variety of writing strategies.

Education Minister, the Hon. Rolston Anglin, JP, believes the effect of providing such early support for students is immeasurable. He said, “This programme is a strategic approach that will pay dividends well into the future.

“Research demonstrates that catching readers before they fail offers more success than remediating them afterwards.”

He continued, “A recent UK study shows that their illiteracy costs exceed £1.4 billion. Though the expense may be lower in Cayman, it is still vital to provide quality early intervention – particularly since this approach can provide substantial savings.”

Playing a key role in the programme’s success is PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

“Being pro-active and trying to enhance the learning experience before reading becomes an issue, is an investment we are happy to make,” PwC Partner Peter Small commented.

Thus far, feedback from teachers using the intervention kits has been favourable.

Maggie Hurley, a Sir John A. Cumber Primary School teacher noted, “While using this tool, I have seen students become more fluent and confident in their reading abilities...and this is happening over a short period of time.

“It’s a clear and concise programme which builds on students’ prior knowledge. Once teachers and students are consistent in their implementation, success will follow. It’s easy to use and needs very little preparation as all lessons are clearly laid out. You just open the book and go.”

Parents have also commented positively on the summer programme, noting that they have seen its success because their children “are surely showing progress.”

Education administrators and teachers plan to continue using the programme during the regular school year, to support students at risk of literacy failure.

$2.4 million per year for juvenile rehab centres Kevin Creary A ministerial youth consultant claims the approach now being used at the juvenile rehabilitation centres on the Island are costly and ineffective.

Michael Myles, Programme Coordinator and Liaison Officer for At-Risk Youth claims that the budget distribution for the homes is top heavy with more spent on administrative and managerial provisions than on therapeutic and hands-on rehabilitation.

“The $2 to 2.4 million per year budget to operate the Bonaventure and Frances Bodden juvenile rehabilitation facilities should include more therapeutic services for the residents.”

According to Mr. Myles, who has brought the training of the Behaviour Education Support Team (BEST) to Cayman through the Education Ministry, the country is paying over the odds for the running of the two centres.

“There are 13 members of staff at the Bonaventure Boys Home, which at present has eight resident boys and Frances Bodden Girls Home has 14 members of staff for it’s 12 residents.

“The current price tag”, the Youth Services consultant claims, “should embrace more comprehensive care for the homes.”

“The kids at Bonaventure have extreme emotional challenges which require expert attention. They also need to have their education properly addressed. We hired quality people in the CAYS Foundation but they have administrative roles and therefore do not work with the kids’ full time.”

psychologists and therapists in paid full-time roles, under the $2 million plus budget.

However, Miss Angela Sealey, CEO for the Children and Family Services Commission, CAYS, dismissed the At-Risk Youth Coordinator claims.

While admitting that there are some services being provided by staff members, rather than specialised professionals, she explained that the home’s employees have a wealth of experience, which contributes to the vocational rehabilitation of the residents.

“When we can, we use our staff’s skills to their full potential. It’s a hands-on programme and we have staff with backgrounds in hairdressing, farming and gardening for example. We embrace those who come to us with additional skills but if I had to outsource some of the services it would be much more expensive,” said Miss Sealey.

But according to Mr. Myles, the food, clothing, and insurance needs of the children being housed are already addressed by the relevant Government departments and do not form part of the expenses to be covered under the budget.

“The Department of Children and Family Services provides food through the school system. School lunches and insurance are provided and some therapeutic services are also made available,” said Mr Myles.

Despite Miss Sealey’s analysis of the professional care, Mr Myles claims that the qualified professionals employed by the foundation are seldom in contact with the residents of the homes.

I agree with Michael totally that if we put the mechanisms up front to address intervention early it will surely decrease kids coming into the care. Bin Laden movie causes political feud complain about a movie.

King on Wednesday sought an investigation by the CIA and Pentagon inspectors general, wanting them to review the administration’s cooperation with director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal, both Academy Award winners for the 2009 film “The Hurt Locker.” The bin Laden movie will be distributed by Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Vatican dispute over monastery ownership VATICAN CITY (AP) — A dispute over ownership of a monastery in Croatia has led to unusual strains between the Vatican and Croatia, a staunchly Catholic bastion in the Balkans.

The Vatican expressed “astonishment” yesterday that Croatian authorities have refused to go along with a decision by Pope Benedict XVI that Croatia’s Catholic church return the monastery to a Benedictine community in Italy and pay euro6 million (nearly $9 million US) in compensation.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi told reporters he expected the various parties to come

together and review a dispute “that is important to both Croatia and the Holy See.” The Vatican said the pope acted after futile efforts over 2 1/2 years by both sides to reach an agreement.

Benedict took the unusual step of appointing a special representative to step in for the local bishop, who took over his powers for just a few minutes to sign the agreement.

Croatians fear the pope’s decision could open the way to similar requests by Italians, who before and during World War II ruled over the territory.

Generally appearances are generally everything Colin Wilson There is a general appearance to the general public that generally the Central Planning Authority (CPA) will generally be on the side of the big developer no matter how much they (the public) protest or object to the project that is before the CPA for consideration. You can object to the Cabinet and object to the CPA’s Appeal Tribunal but generally that is going to be a waste of time unless there is an election looming and by Cabinet giving their approval to the project is going to lose them some valuable votes.

That is the situation here and it is the situation generally everywhere. However, what the powers that be, who make these decisions, do not want is a perception they are generally working against Mr. Average Joe. If they have made an unpopular decision they generally would like it to die a natural death. The longer they can keep this unpopular decision out of the media the better they like it.

As I said that is generally the case.

Not here. I am talking of the Emerald Sound development where on 4th August the CPA approved the plan by RC Estates’ Rene Hislop to build 81 homes canalside involving an 80 foot inland shift that will increase the value of 22 seaside lots owned by Mr. Hislop. The development was hotly opposed by a large group of the public, especially South Sounders (ProjectSouthSound being one such group) who feared drainage, pollution and flooding issues in an area that already has these problems.

The general appearance to the South Sound objectors was the CPA were 100% for the project because of the timing they had set for the hearing of objections. The general public outside the group being affected by the development were divided and when the announcement came one group either shrugged or nodded whilst the other group was generally shocked.

The opponents of the development are licking their wounds and getting ready for another battle. They want some momentum in their opposition campaign to gather strength. They placed signs on their own land along South Sound Road saying, “NO to canal, dredging, bridge and road relocation.” This was their free publicity campaign and only the people who drove along the South Sound Road could see it. The Director of Planning, Mr. Pandohie, head of the body that is generally trying to appear to be neutral and gives go aheads only to good planning ordinates that benefit this country, has publically announced he has initiated action to remove these 24 “NO” signs posted along South Sound Road. “They didn’t have planning permission”, he said. US diver dies in East End

Diana Willington An American dive tourist has died after he lost consciousness getting out of the water.

The man was with a member of his family and had completed a dive off a site in East End on Wednesday morning.

Police say he experienced difficulties as he tried to board a boat with a member of his family.

Staff from the resident dive company, Tortuga Divers, helped the man get onboard the vessel and administrated CPR while waiting for the emergency services to arrive.

The man, who is from Pennsylvania, was rushed to the Cayman Islands Hospital in George Town where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A spokesman for the Royal Cayman Islands Police service said: “About 11:02 a.m. on Wednesday 10 August 2011, police were informed that a 64-year-old man experienced difficulties and lost consciousness while boarding a vessel after completing a dive off a dive site in East End “The man was conveyed to the

House fire was started deliberately Police are investigating an arson attack at a new build house in Newlands.

Just after 5am yesterday morning, police and the fire service were called to an address in Reef Street.

It appears the fire was started deliberately. No one was present at the time and damage was caused to the roof.

Talent pays big bucks in the Cayman Islands Kevin Creary

It is happening again.

A show, which is fast becoming an integral part of the entertainment calendar in the Cayman Islands, Cayman’s Got Talent.

Just when it appeared as if the entertainment scene had nothing more to offer, Nolly Brown, CEO of Nolly Brown Entertainment, surprised the public with the search for talented individuals in the Cayman Islands.

The organiser of the internationally popular talent contest concept thinks the reason for the show is to prove exactly what the title says, that Cayman has got talent.

Mr. Brown, a diabetic, teamed up with the Cayman Island’s Diabetes Association, CIDA, to create the talent show, which allows currently unsigned potential stars to gain recognition and a chance at stardom.

It also simultaneously attracts

funding for CIDA’s therapeutic and treatment services.

Even though the show does not promise a one million dollar first prize or prestigious recording contracts, as in “America’s Got Talent”, it certainly gives the winner the opportunity to become infamous and to start an entertainment career.

However, there is a cash to be won and the children’s category alone has a whopping CI$500 first prize and the first place in the

adult category carries a substantial CI$4,000. This preliminary phase of this year’s talent search will kick off on Saturday the 3rd of September and will run until October the 1st.

The competition will begin in East End, move on to North side, then Bodden Town, and from there to George Town before its conclusion in West Bay. The semi-finals will be held on the 15th October 2011, with the finals staged on the 29th October 2011. The talent show is opened to all indigenous and legitimized Caymanian residents.

CALL 926-4415 The last seen images of Kerran at Airport Foster’s Police yesterday re-evaluated recent searches of Frank Sound and South Sound, while investigating reports that Kerran Baker, missing for 11 days, may have had an East End dinner date on the evening she vanished.

“We have had a lot of new information in the last 24 hours,” Detective Superintendent Marlon Bodden said yesterday, updating the hunt for Ms Baker, 25, who disappeared nearly two weeks ago.

“It takes only a second for someone to tell us something, and we have had a lot of that kind of information,” he said, alluding to reports that the nurse’s assistant may have scheduled a Saturdayevening meal with a friend in East End. “It takes time to see if these things have any bearing, though. We have heard that, and it is part of our inquiries, but we cannot comment on it openly,” he said. “We have sightings of her in West Bay, East End and South Sound.”

John Jones, Chief Superintendent, rejected rumours that police had confiscated travel documents from a previous boyfriend of Ms Baker after he tried to leave Owen Roberts Airport on Wednesday.

“Not that we have knowledge of,” he commented. “We have gone through the movements of a lot of

people – close friends, acquaintances, boyfriends – but no one has been arrested.

“People have been coming forward slowly as to various events, although we still really have nothing that assists us after the last sighting at Foster’s Food Fair on Saturday.”

Ms Baker was last seen on CCTV footage from Foster’s Food Fair at the airport at approximately 7pm Saturday. Investigators later found bagged groceries and a handbag on the kitchen counter at Ms Baker’s Arrow Drive home in Bodden Town.

“We have done coordinated searches in sections of Frank Sound and a more detailed search in South Sound,” Mr Bodden said, “and some areas in East End. “We are looking for anything that might suggest a shallow grave, articles of clothing, jewellery that may have been discarded in a forced separation. But we cannot rush the search for evidence. Sometimes the smallest thing can make a difference.”

He sought to reassure women who feared a serial killer might be at large, saying police had no evidence to suggest Ms Baker’s disappearance was connected with that of Anna Evans six months ago, who vanished at the George Town landfill. No trace of her has been found.

Bodden said, “and that can lead to inaction. I would say do not be afraid, but be aware of your own surroundings, your own safety and security. You should not take that for granted.”

No leads had yet emerged as the result of finding certain documents earlier this week, he said, but rejected any idea that a criminal assault on Ms Baker might go unresolved.

Two of NASA’s space shuttles meet nose-to-nose CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA’s retired space shuttles are trading places.

In a rare nose-to-nose encounter, Discovery and Endeavour met outside the shuttle hangar Thursday at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Discovery moved into the hangar and Endeavour went to the Vehicle Assembly Building.

Contact lost with hypersonic glider after launch LOS ANGELES (AP) — An unmanned hypersonic glider developed for U.S. defense research into super-fast global strike capability was launched atop a rocket early Thursday but contact was lost after the experimental craft began flying on its own, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency said. There was no immediate information on how much of the mission’s goals were achieved.

The launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base, 130 miles northwest of Los Angeles, was the second of two planned flights of a Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle-2. Contact was

Eliminating the bulky wiring and electrodes used in current monitors would make the devices more comfortable for patients, says an international team of researchers who report their findings in Friday’s edition of the journal Science.

“What we are trying to do here is to really reshape and redefine electronics ... to look a lot more like the human body, in this case the surface layers of the skin,” said John A. Rogers of the University of Illinois. “The goal is really to blur the distinction between electronics

The researchers embedded electronic sensors in a film thinner than the diameter of a human hair, which was placed on a polyester backing like those used for the temporary tattoos popular with kids. Children aged seven to twelve spent two weeks in July enjoying the camp held at the Dart Family Park on South Church Street.

It’s a little known condition, yet affects most people. Chances are you suffer from it and don’t even realise it. It’s called Portion Distortion. We live in a world of distorted portions.

Many people can’t even recognise a normal portion anymore because our society has become so accustomed to the inflated size of food. And it’s not just “supersising” of food that is the problem; it’s our everyday portions that cause the most concern.

Case in point: 20 years ago the average bagel was 3 inches and 140 calories. The average bagel today is 6 inches in diameter and 350 calories (that’s equal to 3.5 slices of bread). The average muffin 20 years ago weighed 1.5 oz and provided 210 calories. You’d be hard pressed to find a muffin that size today since the average muffin is 5oz and 500 calories.

The growing rates of obesity are a recognised problem and increased portion sizes are one of the contributing factors. We’ve lost touch with what our portion sizes should be. So what can you do to change that?

It isn’t necessary to weigh or precisely measure food. Instead, use a tool that is always at your disposal: your hands. Use your hands to help guide your portion sizes. A piece of meat, poultry or fish should be equal to the size of the palm of your hand (or about the size of a deck of cards). A portion of starch, which includes rice, pasta, potato, and grains, should be no larger than the size of a fist. Cuban Leader Fidel Castro, turns 85.

Legendary Cuban revolutionary and longtime leader Fidel Castro turns 85 on Aug. 13, his first birthday without an official title.

Despite handing over power to his brother in 2006, and being in poor health, Fidel still remains influential and a source of inspiration for many people throughout the world. There is plenty of speculation on the future of Cuban leadership since Raul Castro is also now an octogenarian.

Cuba launched Tuesday celebrations of the 85th birthday of its former leader Fidel Castro, four days ahead of the actual date.

It remained uncertain whether Castro himself would attend Friday the central event to mark his birthday, a three-hour night-time serenade at the Karl Marx Theatre in Havana.

‘I don’t know whether he will be there or not,’ head organizer Aliana Martinez told the German Press Agency dpa.

On Tuesday, a concert featuring several Cuban and international artists at the Casa del Alba in Havana was to open celebrations.

The exhibition centre Expocuba was planning three days of celebrations FridaySunday, under the slogan ‘Fulfiling dreams.’

Fidel Castro was born on August 13, 1926 in Biran, Cuba. On January 1, 1959, aged only 32, he led the triumph of the so-called Cuban Revolution, which was later to transform the country into a communist state.

Castro led the country until late July 2006, when he stepped down provisionally in what was later to be confirmed with a formal exit.

Courage and Love Georgina Wilcox

To many, work is a necessary evil they would gladly forgo if they won or inherited a fortune. Its meaning is the paycheck and the value it has in terms of service to their community is indifferent or very subordinate.

This calculating and uncaring attitude is recognizable. Whereas people who heartily act in the interest of others are gracious, they are perfunctory. At best, in establishments that demand courtesy from employees, their behavior is irreproachable, albeit artificial. “Can I be of assistance? Here you are. Will there be anything else?

You’re welcome.” There is no genuine attempt at pleasing, just a vapid exercise in politeness and efficiency that follows a procedure and arouses a feeling of satisfied indifference, as would a serving of plain noodles. They do the minimum that is required; to maintain their employment, and gladly do nothing provided they get paid all the same. They never miss a break. Come the end of their working day, they rush out before the first second of the next hour has passed.

They live for their time off and dream of a permanent vacation, as though leisure were the essence of happiness.

What about love? The desire to live usefully in the service of others? The more you love life, in company with others who take part in your life, the more you love others.

Now, feeling this love is one thing, acting upon it is quite another, which needs courage. Actually, a lack of courage would not only render this love inactive but also tend to destroy it in order to avoid shame. The mind is a double-edged thinking tool that can cut its way in and out of truth by means of veracious statements or specious arguments. Love may be denied despite every reason for loving. Therefore, courage is a rich trait of character without which love is unable to flourish, neither as an emotion nor as an action. Of course, where laziness and cowardliness have rotted or stunted love, dignity is but a

potential bloom.

I think courage should be valued above all other virtues, since it constitutes the necessary condition for developing them. It is not a sufficient condition, however. It is capable of nothing by itself while everything depends on it. Courage is the force that can raise life to joy and joy to love and love to dignity, insofar as the human nature aspires to these difficult heights, though it is always tempted to go for the easy and low option.

The more you are afflicted with misery, the harder it is for you to lead a courageous and honourable existence.

It is not surprising that children who grow up in miserable circumstances sometimes display miserable attitudes and behaviors once they are adults.

The problem is clearly cancerous.

Some dream of equal opportunities for everyone. Will this dream someday become a reality? Everywhere in the world, it meets with inequality between those who are born lucky and those who are not. Is it a lost cause?

Even a welfare state with the most extensive social assistance could only reduce this inequality, not eliminate it.

Would communism reduce this inequality further? History suggests that a communist regime would prove ruinous, economically and psychologically, in the long run. The equal sharing of resources between people, imposed on them by a centralised government regardless of their respective contributions to the common good, is an untenable and unviable totalitarian approach. In a word, it is an absurdity. Democratic societies, on the other hand, leave

much to be desired, but are certainly the most satisfactory to date. They are based on freedom, talent, chance, and merit, while including a safety net for those who have fallen off the high wire of health and success. Things merely have to improve.

Forget perfection, which is deadly and imperfect after all: an illusion.

Unhealthy, unwise, unsuccessful, unhappy, and unkind adults will keep bringing children into the world.

Assuming these children will benefit from improved relief measures, they will nevertheless suffer from a difficult youth, lacking in the material and spiritual advantages luckier children enjoy. None but the strong will overcome. Only they will appreciate the divine justice that counterbalances the problem of inequality: The less luck people have at the start, the more merit they have in the end if they make a success of their life. This principle is universal and timeless; it is applicable here and now. May the objects of our compassion fill us with admiration as they rise from their woes to become our heroes!

This victory against the odds is an extreme. Contrary to expectations, some people born of goodhearted and well-to-do parents are miserable individuals. They are insatiably selfish and shockingly ungrateful, so infantile and spineless that play and rest are their sole ambitions. Did they have a weak character to start with? The South Sound Squash Club was packed for the mens and women’s finals in the 2011 Senior Caribbean Squash Championships.

In the women’s Finals top seed Nicolette Fernandez from Guyana beat Karen Meakins from Barbados , 11/5, 7/11, 11/3, 11/6, claiming her third CASA title.

Meakins couldn’t seem to get to grips with her opponent after the exchanges, as Fernandes, playing very solidly, pulled away from a 2-3 deficit to lead 10-4 before closing out the opener 11-5.

However, after a bad start in the second, Meakins seemed to be making a come-back, putting Fernandes under pressure. But she couldn’t sustain the pressure, as Fernandes was clearly in no mood to give up any more ground, and she closed both of the final games decisively to reclaim ‘her’ title.

In the Mens Finals, Chris Binnie from Jamaica beat Richard Chin from Guyana, 2/11, 11/3, 11/7 11/5.

Binnie picked up the pace after making too many mistakes in the first game, putting pressure on Chin consistently throughout the following games. Despite a heroic effort from Chin, Binnie was able to reclaim ‘his’ title, just like Fernandes.

The end of the school year is here and savvy moms and dads by now have made all the arrangements for summer.

Summer camps and leisurely days at the pool or beach are just a few of the summer rituals for many families.

However if you're tempted to let your child play outdoors for even a few minutes without proper sun protection, you might want to think twice.

Adolescence and childhood are critical periods during which exposure to UV radiation is more likely to contribute to skin cancer in later life. Children with fair skin, blond or red hair and blue or green eyes are at the highest risk of sunburn.

But darker-skinned children also need sun protection. With this in mind, it’s important that parents teach their children how to enjoy fun in the sun safely.

LIMIT OUTDOOR PLAYTIME BETWEEN 10A.M. AND 4P.M.

Apply a thick, even coat to all exposed areas 20 - 30 minutes before your child goes out in the sun. Choose a sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher. Make sure it's labeled "broad spectrum," which means it blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight. For your little ones, sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide should be selected as these compounds are less irritating than others. Sunscreen sticks are best for the face because they are sweat proof and less likely to drip. Don't forget nose, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck; lips can also burn, so apply a lip balm with SPF protection. Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours, or after sweating or swimming.

COVER FROM HEAD TO TOE. Wearing protective clothing and hats is one of the primary ways of warding off UV damage. When wet, light coloured clothing transmits just as much sunlight as bare skin. Keep your kids covered with dark colours, long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. And don't forget the accessories: sunglasses with UV protection to guard against burned corneas, and hats to prevent sunburned scalps and faces.

Protective clothing, hats with wide brims, and sunglasses are just as important for babies. At the beach, bring along a large umbrella.

Parents, you are the best teacher by practicing sun safety yourself. If your child sees you following sun safety rules, he'll take them for granted and follow suit. Teach every member of the family how to protect their skin and eyes. With proper supervision, children can learn to protect themselves and enjoy summer fun without sacrificing the health of their skin.

Avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun's rays are at their strongest. Even on cloudy or cooler days, ultraviolet (UV) rays remain strong. Shady spots can be just as tricky because of reflected light. If your child is playing outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply ample sunscreen.

WATCH OUT FOR MEDICATIONS. Some medications increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, so make sure to ask your doctor whether your child may be at risk. Prescription antibiotics and acne medications are the most notorious culprits, but when in doubt, ask.

LONDON (AP) — Tottenham’s opening match of the Premier League season against Everton on Saturday has been postponed following disorder in the London neighborhood that sparked a wave of rioting and looting across England.

The decision to call off the Tottenham game was taken Thursday by the league after being discussed at a meeting of the government’s emergency committee, known as COBRA. While there are still safety concerns in the area around Tottenham’s White Hart Lane stadium, the remaining nine topflight matches this weekend are set to go ahead, including two others in London.

“Everything is subject to change if there is a major incident in any of the cities tonight or on Friday night,” Premier League chief executive Scudamore said Thursday on the launch of the season.

The violence first broke out late Saturday in the lowincome district of Tottenham in north London after a protest against the fatal police shooting of Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old father of four who was gunned down in disputed circumstances Thursday.

The violence morphed into general lawlessness in London and several other cities over the following three nights, with police struggling to regain control.

“The police have done a fantastic job, but it’s been a crime scene all week and the council have not had enough time to do what they need,” Scudamore said.

MONTREAL (AP) — Rafael Nadal is out at the Rogers Cup after a shocking 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) defeat in the second round against Croatia’s Ivan Dodig on Wednesday night.

With the tiebreaker in the final set tied 5-5, Dodig — ranked 41st in the world — ripped a 135 miles-per-hour ace past Nadal, then finished the upset by hammering a backhand that the second-ranked Spanish star couldn’t handle.

“This is the greatest moment of my life,” Dodig said.

In a late match following the Nadal loss, American Mardy Fish downed Feliciano Lopez of Spain 6-2, 6-3. Earlier, No. 5 Gael Monfils of France defeated American Alex Bogomolov, 6-2, 7-6 (5).

Woods squandered three early birdies with a pair of double bogeys, his ball landing in water and sand seemingly as much as on grass. It was the sort of erratic play that has kept him winless in the majors for more than three years.

Starting on the back side, Woods birdied his first hole by driving into the fairway — no guarantee these days — and rolling in an 18-foot putt. He put his name at the top of the board with two more birdies at the 12th and the 14th, the latter resulting from a massive drive, then an approach that spun back within 3 feet of the flag.

Then, trouble at the 253-yard 15th, the longest par-3 hole on the course.

Woods went with an iron but turned away as soon he hit the tee shot, the ball plopping into the pond that runs along the right side of the hole. He wound up making a double bogey.

At the 16th, a wild drive led to more problems. Woods landed in a fairway bunker to the right, knocked his approach into the gallery on the left, flopped it into another bunker and settled for a bogey. He made the turn with a 2-over 37.
