After volunteering in It Takes a Village, the new afterschool programme aimed at helping George Town Primary School (GTPS) kids learn through play and positive interaction with adults, Susan Cummer decided she really wanted to do a bit more. But volunteering takes time and commitment, so she had to find out the best way to juggle her volunteering with family commitments: “I have two kids of my own so Miss Martin (GTPS Head) put me with the librarian on Friday morning, and I was helping read to the kids there,” she said. Helping kids read, and reading to them was fine, but an unexpected avenue for helping kids soon opened up: “Then kids started asking me questions about math. One Friday one of the teachers said, ‘you know, you’re needed more tutoring in math than at the library reading,’” Ms Cummer said. Since then she has begun tutoring students, in small groups of four and five, for 25 minutes per session three times a week. While there are many reading programmes in the Cayman Islands, there are much fewer math programmes for primary age students, so Ms Cummer feels it’s is a great opportunity for her to make a more significant impact. Post Graduate Diploma in Education last year that a professor there gave Ms Cummer an invaluable piece of advice: ”Don’t teach the children anything they can find out for themselves.” Taking this to heart, a learningthrough-doing approach has become the backbone of Ms Cummer’s approach to her math intervention programme. On the day I visited her, five children were each given ten sticks, asked to separate them into groups in order to find out all the combinations of two numbers that add up to ten. They also had to write the number 10 by the side of the sticks. It is part of a process that involves linking the concrete world of numbers of visible
objects with something abstract- the symbols that represent those numbers. It is this conceptual jump between the representational and the abstract that so many children find difficult. “It’s a process,” Ms Cummer says. “Math builds upon basic key concepts. If they miss out on these key concepts it will negatively impact their ability to perform. For example counting backwards if a student cannot count backwards then they will struggle with subtraction.” Ms Cummer hopes that by establishing the foundation stones properly, the students she teaches will be much better equipped to learn the more advanced stages of maths

Archuleta ‘excited’ to shoot Philippine TV series

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — “American Idol” runner-up David Archuleta says he’s “excited” about working on a Philippine TV series. The singer’s Filipino costars Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Eula Caballero welcomed him with flower garlands at Manila’s airport Friday, and fans and journalists jostled to take pictures as he emerged from the airport gate. Archuleta, 20, said in a video blog before leaving the U.S. that he has taken acting lessons to prepare. “I’m excited about it,” he said. “This is a new experience for me.” TV5 Vice President Perci Intalan says “it’s a dream come true” for the network to have Archuleta in a Filipino show. He’ll be shooting the drama series over the next few weeks. More details on the show and Archuleta’s role were not available. Archuleta competed on the 20072008 season of “American Idol” and has released three albums. He announced last month he would take a break from music to serve two years as a Mormon missionary. The location of his mission has not been disclosed.

Gas station burglary George Town detectives are investigating a burglary at the Shedden Road Texaco gas station. About 5.15 am Friday morning police received a report of a burglary at the location. A spokeswoman for the RCIPS said: “On arrival officers saw that the glass door had been smashed. Initial investigations suggest that two masked men broke into the premises overnight. At this time it is unclear what, if anything, has been stolen. Meanwhile government officials have promised to look at a proposed Red Bay alternate port, but indicate they are unlikely to abandon George Town, possibly designating the South Sound site as a replacement for Spotts Landing. Speaking about the nascent agreement, Ellio Solomon, George Town MLA and head of government’s negotiating team, told iNews Cayman he expected an accord “by mid-February, at the latest by late February, but more likely in the middle of the month.” Work, he said, would begin almost immediately, involving some dredging and boring, but focused initially on the environmental study, project design and assessment of the Spotts Landing foul-weather berthing alternative. After four days of talks last week in Kingston, simultaneous with the inauguration of new Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, Mr Solomon said, “the discussions went really well. They were tough, but it was very important to deal with the issues and concerns of the public, which is what I had most in mind.” “Maximising opportunities for Caymanians,” he said, particularly on upland development of the piers and associated two-storey retail, restaurant and hotel space, meant “every block that is laid, all the aggregate, every bit of steel that is driven and every time someone puts on a roof, Caymanians will have the opportunity. It will be Caymanians as much as possible. “We want Caymanians to bid on all that work, competitively of course,” he said, while similar stipulations would govern “the supply of materials”. “We were also concerned about where workers will live and what kind of accommodations they will build. wanted to make sure we avoid the kind of situation with ‘man-camps’, although we have had them before in Cayman,” he said, referring to constructionsite barracks that previously housed Camana Bay builders. ”They are going to deal with local accommodation as much as possible,” he said. “I made it clear it wasn’t happening that [the Chinese] get a piece of land and build on it.” In meeting owners of vacant rental units, he said, they had agreed to discounted long-term leases. “A guy may have a one-bedroom unit he rents for $500 or $600 per month, but now he could rent for five years or three years at $400.” He had gained some success when he “tried to remove” terms that awarded the port to the Chinese for between 49 years and 51 years, instead allowing CHEC a return on the multi-million build-operate-transfer investment, but staggering payments through time. “They need to make a return,” he said, “but there will be a sharing of money, and there are some dates in the ground, although the final paperwork will define them. “The Chinese will share a per-head figure on each tourist,” currently set at approximately $15, “and the first year they will get some portion of that, the second year another portion and still another in the third year, so it will go slowly.

“While the Chinese will rent the upland portion and be responsible for all maintenance, full ownership and operation will be by the Port Authority. At no point,” Mr Solomon said, would CHEC gain ownership. The environmental study would “take pretty much about three months, but a lot of the work has already been done. Dart did some and has assigned it to CHEC, which has also done some other work,” he said. Director of the Environment Gina Ebanks-Petrie confirmed that CHEC had recommended Aecom for the study, but said “we are still waiting for them to come back to us. We have heard nothing from them.” As to Red Bay, Mr Solomon said, “I don’t think the government is averse to it, but we are not in a position to stop what has to happen in the George Town harbour. We are not going to move everything to Red Bay, but we see how important it is to have redundancy at the port and it would be prudent to retain several options.” A wholesale move to the South Sound site would damage downtown retail operations, he said, while “I remain concerned about the impact of putting 1.5 million tourist in that neighbourhood. I am not going to knock something, however, without all the facts. We are willing to listen to that position and I am happy to attend Red Bay briefings,” Mr Solomon said.

Jealous husband jailed for attempted murder Paul Kennedy

An estranged husband poured petrol into his wife’s place of work and set it alight causing $200,000 worth of damage. George Evans also sprayed gasoline into her face and lit a match before she managed to escape. Evans was found guilty of trying to kill his wife Martiza and also of damaging property and intending to damage in order to endanger her life. The Honourable Justice Charles Quin jailed Evans for 10 years for attempted murder and eight years for arson to run concurrent. Judge Quin said: “This is a tragic case where the negative effects of alcohol, added to uncontrolled jealousy, have made this defendant behave in a manner in which he

would, otherwise, not behave.” The court heard how the couple had been having serious marital difficulties and that Mrs Evans had moved out although she tried to maintain a presence at the matrimonial home for the sake of their 10 year old son. On December 11th 2010 – the night before he tried to kill her – the defendant came home “in a bad mood”. Judge Quin said: “Mrs Evans also noticed that his eyes were flaky and she said that when the defendant would get like that, she would get scared. “Accusing her of infidelity, Mrs Evans said the defendant said to her ‘People like you shouldn’t be alive, you know’.” Scared of what he might do, Mrs Evans left the home and returned
to her apartment with their son. During that night her husband kept telephoning her. The next day he turned up at her place of work in Plantation Village armed with a machete. He left but returned 30 minutes later. This time Mrs Evans went into the car park with him where he said: “Come here, I have something good for you.” He then went to his truck and produced the bottle of H7 industrial cleaner that he had filled with petrol. Judge Quin said: “The defendant shoved his hand through the door and sprayed the contents of the HY bottle on his wife. The liquid hit her face and burned her eyes. Mrs Evans managed to close the door whereupon the defendant used a lighter or match to cause the door, and the area around the door, to
burst into flames.” Evans then got behind the wheel of his truck and smashed his wife’s car before driving the vehicle into the front of the reception. He poured petrol inside and set the area ablaze. Judge Quin told the court if Evans had managed to set his wife alight after spraying the accelerate into her face he would have been facing a life sentence. He said that it was clear he is suffering from alcohol dependence and a personality disorder. Mrs Evans has continued to visit her husband at HMPS Northward and claims she still loves him. Workers from the Public Works Department have completed fencing and warning signs to discourage cliff jumpers in the Pedro St James area, following a holiday week in which two youths drowned in Old Jones Bay. Chief Inspector Robert Scotland at the Bodden Town Police Station told iNews Cayman earlier in the week he hoped the new wooden fence, between five feet and six feet high, and its “No Trespassing” sign would discourage thrill-seekers from using

the pathways across private property to reach the cliffs. On the afternoon of 26 December, 16-year-old Justin Henry died after leaping into unexpectedly strong currents in the storm-tossed bay, finding himself unable to reach the shore. On New Year’s Day, 21-year-old Adam Rankine, watched by his 15-year-old sister, ran into similar problems, drowning in the same waters. Responding to emergency calls, police were unable to rescue either boy, arriving only after the event.
Both families were devastated by the tragedies, and called for barriers to discourage other jumpers and prevent any repetition of the incidents. The new gate is between 12 feet and 15 feet wide, blocking the dirt path and extending into the foliage, although Chief Inspector Scotland acknowledged that it could not stop anyone determined to gain access to the cliffs. He said: “We took possession of the keys just yesterday. It is not perfect but It serves as a reminder to people that it is private property.”

The latest iPhone from Apple arrived in Cayman yesterday – and fans of BBM-ing have nothing to worry about! In another first for telecommunications giant, LIME they launched the new iPhone 4S on the island. And their Regional Product Manager for Voice Services, Alfred Bodden, insisted iMessenger, Apple’s version of BBM, offers the same facilities as its rival. Aesthetically, the 4S looks the same as the early model, but it has clearly evolved taking its features to a whole new level. It contains SIRI – a unique system that allows the user to talk to the phone to give instructions, and also a much improved 8MP camera. The iPhone 4S is available through LIME.

Beijing Apple store egged after iPhone delay BEIJING (AP) — Angry customers and gangs of scalpers threw eggs at Apple Inc.’s flagship Beijing store Friday after its opening for the China launch of the iPhone 4S was canceled due to concerns over the size of the crowd. Apple reacted to the outburst by postponing iPhone 4S sales in its mainland China stores to protect the safety of customers and employees. It said the phone still will be sold online and through its local carrier. The incident highlighted Apple’s huge popularity in China and the
role of middlemen who buy up limited supplies of iPhones and other products or smuggle them from abroad for resale to Chinese gadget fans at a big markup. Hundreds of customers including migrant workers hired by scalpers in teams of 20 to 30 waited overnight in freezing weather at the Apple store in a shopping mall in Beijing’s east side Sanlitun district. The crowd erupted after the store failed to open on schedule at 7 a.m. Some threw eggs and shouted at employees through the windows.
A person with a megaphone announced the sale was canceled. Police ordered the crowd to leave and sealed off the area with yellow tape. Employees posted a sign saying the iPhone 4S was out of stock.
Heather Locklear taken to hospital THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — Heather Locklear was taken to a Southern California hospital for precautionary reasons Thursday after an emergency call was made from her home, authorities said. Paramedics and sheriff’s deputies responded Thursday afternoon to Locklear’s home in Westlake Village, which is 35 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Locklear was taken to Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, where a spokeswoman told KCAL-TV the actress was stable and her parents were by her side. “Her parents wanted everybody to know that she’s doing well, she’s fine, she’s not in any danger, she’s healthy,”
hospital spokeswoman Kris CarrawayBowman told the station. Ventura County sheriff’s Capt. Mike Aranda said he did not know Locklear’s condition but deputies were not investigating. He said: “Emergency response personnel responded to a medical emergency call at Ms. Locklear’s residence. Once they arrived, it was determined that Ms. Locklear needed to be transported to the hospital for further medical attention.” Locklear has been hospitalized several times over the years. In 2009, she pleaded no contest to reckless driving after being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of prescription medication.
The 50-year-old actress’s publicists did not return messages seeking comment. Locklear and “Melrose Place” costar Jack Wagner recently ended their engagement. She was previously married to Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora, and they have a daughter together.

Turkish court charges Sarah Ferguson on orphanages ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A Turkish court has pressed charges against Britain’s Duchess of York for secretly filming orphanages in Turkey. The court on Thursday accused Ferguson in absentia of going “against the law in acquiring footage and violating privacy” of five children. She faces a maximum term of 22 1/2 years in prison if convicted. No trial date has been set. Ferguson, the former wife of Britain’s Prince Andrew, made an undercover trip to Turkey in 2008 to examine orphanages for a British television program. At the time, the Turkish government accused her of being involved in a “smudge campaign” when Turkey was trying to get membership of the
European Union. But flame-haired Fergie, who also filmed orphanages in Romania with daughter Princess Beatrice for the programme, said she was “apolitical”. It is not clear why it took more than three years to file charges against Ferguson.

It would seem on the one sided colin.wilson@ieyenews.com version (the husband’s) I have seen and read, the decision by the Cayman Islands Immigration Department to expel Jamaican National Gary Evans, husband of the still missing Anna Ebanks Evans (she disappeared nearly a year ago), to be strange. He is still legally married to his wife and also has three children from the marriage. I also wonder if the RCIPS are happy to hear this? I am not sure this is even legal and I would imagine he has many grounds on which to appeal. Then we come to the moral question, although the Immigration Department does have a questionable record there. A rubber stamp is more important than having to deal with the heartbreak of families being torn apart but that is the case with immigration departments in nearly every jurisdiction. However, these islands pride themselves on being Christian…….. It is very disturbing that once more we hear of dogs being poisoned especially from Paraquat. It is used here as a weed killer, is highly toxic and extremely dangerous to everyone who applies it to the plants. There is no antidote and you can even get sick if the poison touches a cut on your skin. Even breathing it in may cause lung damage. In humans, if swallowed, death is rapid. The symptoms of Paraquet poisoning in a human is: burns in throat, coma, difficulty breathing, nosebleed, seizures, shock, shortness of breath, sore throat, stomach pain, and vomiting. I can only imagine what torture a poor dog must go through if subjected to this terrible poison. The people who deliberately try to poison animals are not fit to be even described as human beings. In the United States, Paraquat is available primarily as a liquid in various strengths. It is classified as “restricted use,” which means that it can be used only by licensed

applicators. In the European Union, Paraquat has been forbidden since 2007. Unfortunately there is no such ban here in the Cayman Islands, whilst we ban other products that are far less dangerous. I was very pleased to learn that members of the Cayman Islands’ legal profession got tired of waiting for Government to pass the legal practitioner’s bill and decided to adopt the code of conduct themselves voluntarily. Law Society President Charles Jennings said that despite enjoying “the overwhelming support of the profession as a whole”, the bill had remained unpassed and both professional associations were unsure where it now stood. “The bill seeks to address the practice of law, not, as some seem to think, immigration issues, and I believe it has aroused a great deal of controversy for reasons that are beyond its remit,” Jennings said in his own speech at the court opening ceremony. “Since, however, nobody so far has approached the Law Society to explain them to us, it is hard for us to know how we can meet them.” Hmm.. now where have I heard that before pertaining to other matters requiring legislation by Government? I have complained a number of times about service or lack of same at restaurants on Grand Cayman. I have to applaud one experience I had recently at a restaurant here. In fact the service could not be bettered and the food was exceptional. The restaurant is located in West Bay and there are parrots, although thankfully this bird was not on the menu. The restaurant was full of diners yet everyone seemed to be served quickly and efficiently. The owner found time to visit every table and have a polite and friendly chat inquiring of strangers where they were from. He even gave everyone an after dinner aperitif from various bottles he carried around with him, including the ‘infamous’ grappa. The whole evening was a delightful experience.

Georgina Wilcox The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival is a significant holiday celebrated in China, and the one with the longest history. The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated by boat races in the shape of Dragons. Competing teams row their boats forward to a drumbeat racing to reach the finish end first. The boat races during the Dragon Boat Festival are traditional customs to attempts to rescue the patriotic poet Chu Yuan. Chu Yuan drowned on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 277 B.C. Chinese citizens now throw bamboo leaves filled with cooked rice
into the water. Therefore the fish could eat the rice rather than the hero poet. This later on turned into the custom of eating tzung tzu and rice dumplings. The rowers of each team drivie their boats forward in unison to the beat of drums. The winning team is the one that first grabs the flag at the end of the river course and the difference between victory and defeat may be only a few fractions of a second. This lively and colorful tradition has
continued unbroken for centuries to the present day. The celebration is a time for protection from evil and disease for the rest of the year. It is done so by different practices such as hanging healthy herbs on the front door, drinking nutritious concoctions, and displaying portraits of evil’s nemesis, Chung Kuei. (AP) — The parents of Natalee Holloway looked on somberly as a judge on Thursday declared their child dead, more than six years after the American teenager vanished during a high school graduation trip to the Caribbean island of Aruba. “We’ve been dealing with her death for the last six and a half years,” Dave Holloway said after a brief hearing. He said the judge’s order closes one chapter in a long ordeal, but added: “We’ve still got a long way to go to get justice. Natalee Holloway disappeared in Aruba on May 30, 2005. The 18-year-old was last seen leaving a bar early that morning with a young Dutchman, Joran van der Sloot. Her body was never found and the ensuing searches for the young woman would reap intense media scrutiny and worldwide attention. Thursday’s hearing was scheduled long before van der Sloot — a suspect questioned in Holloway’s disappearance — pleaded guilty Wednesday in Peru to the 2010 murder of a woman he met at a casino in Lima. Stephany Flores, 21, was killed five years to the day after Holloway, an 18-year-old from the wealthy Birmingham suburb of Mountain Brook, disappeared. Shortly after Flores’ death on May 30, 2010, van der Sloot told police he killed the woman in Peru in a fit of rage after she discovered on his laptop his connection to the disappearance of Holloway. Dave Holloway told the judge in September he believed his daughter had died and he wanted to stop payments on her medical insurance and use her $2,000 college fund to help her younger brother. The teen’s mother originally objected, but her lawyer, Charlie DeBardeleben, said she subsequently changed her mind once she understood her husband’s intentions. Natalee Holloway’s parents were divorced in 1993 and Beth Holloway sat in the back row of the courtroom, mostly staring at her hands in her lap through the hearing Thursday afternoon in a probate court in Birmingham. Although Beth Holloway declined to speak to journalists, her attorney signaled it was a difficult moment for her to witness a judge signing the order declaring her daughter dead. “She’s ready to move on from this,” DeBardeleben added. Mark White, an attorney for Dave Holloway, told the judge just before he announced his decision, that there was no evidence that Holloway was alive. “Despite all that no evidence has been found Natalee Holloway is alive,” he told the judge, noting that exhaustive searches, blanket international media coverage and even the offer of rewards had turned up nothing new. King had ruled in September that Dave Holloway had met the legal presumption of death for his daughter and it was up to someone to prove she didn’t die on a high school graduation
trip. He had set the hearing after a period of several months in the event anyone might come forward with new information. However, investigators have long worked from the assumption that the young woman was dead in Aruba, where the case was officially classified as a homicide investigation. That investigation remains open, though there has been no recent activity, said Solicitor General Taco Stein, an official with the prosecutor’s office on the Dutch Caribbean island. “The team that was acting in that investigation still is functioning as a team and they get together whenever there is information or things are needed in the case or a new tip arrives,” Stein said in a phone interview Thursday. Dave Holloway said he hopes the 24-year-old van der Sloot, who is awaiting sentencing in Lima, gets a 30-year prison term sought by Peruvian prosecutors. “Everybody knows his personality. I believe he is beyond rehabilitation,” Holloway said. Attorneys said both parents also expressed hope that van der Sloot’s next stop is Birmingham, where he faces federal charges accusing him of extorting $25,000 from Beth Holloway to reveal the location of her daughter’s body. Prosecutors said the money was paid, but nothing was disclosed about the missing woman’s whereabouts. “I expect to see him in Birmingham,” Dave Holloway said Thursday.

She is an M.D. in Internal Medicine and runs a successful medically supervised weight loss program from the clinic. CAUSES 5. Food allergy or sensitivity: Food allergies and hypersensitivity can cause chronic diarrhoea. . Carbohydrate or sugar malabsorption is an inability to digest and absorb sugars. The most well-recognized malabsorption of sugar occurs with lactase deficiency (also known as lactose or milk intolerance) in which milk products containing the milk sugar, lactose, lead to diarrhoea. The lactose is not broken up in the intestine because of the absence of an intestinal enzyme, lactase that normally breaks up lactose. Without being broken up, lactose cannot be absorbed into the body. The undigested lactose reaches the colon and pulls water into the colon. This leads to diarrhoea. Although lactose is the most common form of sugar malabsorption, other sugars in the diet also may cause diarrhoea, including fructose and sorbitol. People with celiac disease (gluten allergy) often have diarrhoea and weight loss. 6. Fat malabsorption: Malabsorption of fat is the inability to digest or absorb fat. Fat malabsorption may occur because of reduced pancreatic secretions that are necessary for normal digestion of fat (for example, due to pancreatitis ) or by diseases of the lining of the

small intestine that prevent the absorption of digested fat (for example, celiac disease). Undigested fat enters the last part of the small intestine and colon where bacteria turn it into substances (chemicals) that cause water to be secreted by the small intestine and colon. Passage through the small intestine and colon also may be more rapid when there is malabsorption of fat. 7. Medicines: Medicines (prescription and nonprescription), herbs, and dietary supplements can cause diarrhoea as a side effect. To determine if a medicine could be the cause of your diarrhoea, review your list of medicines with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This information may also be available on the medicine bottle or paperwork that comes with most prescriptions. On occasion, laxative abuse in an attempt to lose weight is the cause of chronic diarrhoea. 8. Bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine: Because of small intestinal problems, normal colonic bacteria may spread from the colon and into the small intestine. When they do, they are in a position to digest food that the small intestine has not had time to absorb. 9. Post-infection: Following acute viral, bacterial or parasitic infections, some individuals develop chronic diarrhoea. The cause of this type of diarrhoea is not clear, but some of the individuals have bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine. This condition also is referred to as post-infectious IBS. 10. Colon cancer: Colon cancer can cause either diarrhoea or constipation.
If the cancer blocks the passage of stool, it usually causes constipation. Sometimes, however, there is secretion of water behind the blockage, and liquid stool from behind the blockage leaks around the cancer and results in diarrhoea. Cancer, particularly in the distal part of the colon, can lead to thin stools. Cancer in the rectum can lead to a sense of incomplete evacuation. 11. Severe constipation: By blocking the colon, hardened stool can lead to the same problems as colon cancer, as discussed previously. EVALUATION: You should seek medical attention if you have loose or watery stools that last more than three weeks. You may need to be seen sooner than this if you have complications of diarrhoea (eg, bloody diarrhoea, fever, dehydration, or weight loss). During your visit, it is important to mention when your diarrhoea began, any recent changes in medicines or medical problems, and if you have had accidents (leaking or smearing of stool in the underwear). Tests: Blood, stool, and urine tests can help to find the underlying cause of diarrhoea. If these tests do not find the cause, other approaches may be needed, including X-rays or procedures, such as colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy. In just seven days, four people have been killed and another left fighting for his life. On Monday, Jason Christian became the latest victim of the senseless gun crime that’s paralysing the Cayman Islands. For once, his murder didn’t take place on the streets of West Bay but instead in George Town outside a
house off Crewe Road. Another man, Keith Montique, was shot but miraculously survived the attack and has been flown to Miami for emergency treatment. After he was shot four times, Mr Montique staggered to Crewe Road where he saw a police car. Detectives then found Mr Christian slumped at the wheel of a white van – the same vehicle, say police, that was used in the robbery of Tortuga Liquor Store last week.
Last Tuesday, Robert Bush was killed in West Bay. On Thursday, Andrew Baptist died after he was shot and, on Saturday, night Preston Rivers was murdered. Chief Superintendent John Jones said: “It’s clear these have all been assassinations. The brutality speaks for itself.” So far six people have been arrested but no one has been charged.

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas insists he will not sell Frank Lampard during the January transfer window. Villas-Boas’s handling of Lampard has been one of the biggest talking points of his reign, with the manager often prepared to drop the England star. Lampard, 33, has openly admitted his frustration at failing to earn a regular Blues starting place. Manchester United were rumoured to be interested but Villas-Boas insisted: “Frank is not available at any price.” And Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has dismissed speculation the former West Ham man would move to Old Trafford this month. Villas-Boas insists he has a “fantastic” relationship with Lampard, despite reports of disharmony between the pair. “We speak every day,” he said.
Lampard, who has scored 10 goals this season, has either been substituted or come off the bench in 11 of his 26 games. The midfielder has 18 months left on his current contract at Stamford Bridge but Villas-Boas insists he cannot guarantee him a regular starting place, despite pressure from Chelsea fans who idolise a player in his 11th season at the club. Lampard has made 535 appearances, scoring 180 goals, since moving to west London in 2001. Amir Khan-Lamont Peterson: WBA confirms rematch The World Boxing Association has confirmed it has ordered a rematch between Amir Khan and Lamont Peterson. Khan lost his WBA and IBF titles to Peterson in December and has questioned a number of aspects of the fight. Howard breaks FT attempts mark, Magic top Warriors OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Dwight Howard broke Wilt Chamberlain’s nearly 50-year-old NBA record for most free throw attempts in a game, making 21 of 39 in the Orlando Magic’s 117-109 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night. The Warriors hacked Howard intentionally throughout, sending the notoriously poor shooter to the line in record-setting fashion. Chamberlain shot 34 for the Philadelphia Warriors against St. Louis on Feb. 22, 1962. Howard finished with 45 points and 23 rebounds, and Hedo Turkoglu scored 20 points to propel the Magic to their third straight victory. Monta Ellis had 30 points and 11 assists and David Lee added 26 points and 12 rebounds for the short-handed Warriors, playing without starters Stephen Curry and Dorell Wright. MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Nearly 40 years after she won the last of her 11 Australian Open singles titles, Margaret Court is back in the news at Melbourne Park for her opposition to gay marriage. Her stance has spurred the creation of a Facebook group, “Rainbow Flags Over Margaret Court Arena,” which is urging spectators to display rainbow-colored gay pride banners at the show court that bears her name during the Australian Open, which begins Monday. “Politically correct education has masterfully escorted homosexuality out from behind closed doors, into the community openly and now is aggressively demanding marriage rights that are not theirs to take,” the 69-year-old Court said in a December interview with The West Australian in Perth, where she lives. “The fact that the homosexual cry is, ‘We can’t help it, as we were born this way,’ as the cause behind their own personal choice is cause for concern,” said Court, who became a

Kendall fights at Florida tournament West Bay boxer Kendall Ebanks is taking part in the Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions in the US this weekend. Kendall, who last year represented the country in the World Amateur Boxing Games in Azerbaijan, will enter the ring in Florida. He is hoping a good performance – on the back of a silver at the Caribbean Games before Christmas – will boost his chances of fighting at the Olympics. Golden Gloves of America currently has thirty franchises spanning from New England States to Hawaii and represents every section of the country.
