Devon Anglin shot dead four year old Jeremiah Barnes at point-blank range, narrowly missing intended target, father Andrew Barnes, as he drove away from a West Bay petrol station, prosecutors told the Grand Court on Friday. Opening a three-week murder trial before Justice Cooke, prosecutors spun a graphic and grisly tale of the February shooting death, showing CCTV footage of the 15 February, 8pm murder at the Hell Road Esso station. Detailing the five-count indictment against Mr Anglin, prosecutor Andrew Radcliffe, QC, told Mr Justice Cooke that charges of murder, attempted murder, assault, possession of an imitation firearm and threatening violence stemmed from two incidents involving the defendant and Mr Barnes, culminating in the accidental shooting of his son. The trial is set down for three weeks.

London’s calling for swimmer Brett Fraser Gabrielle Myers gabrielle.myers@ieyenews.com

The short freestyle specialist is heading to the big smoke for the 2012 Olympics – and he’ll have a whole country cheering him on. Last week at Royal Palms, family members as well as members of Stingray Swim Club and Camana Bay Aquatic Club celebrated Brett Fraser’s Olympic qualification. The organiser of the great event was Sarah McKay the mother of another former Olympic qualifier, Andrew McKay. She said, “We’re all proud of him.” There were two main reasons for the gathering according to Ms. McKay. They were, one to celebrate Brett’s accomplishment and secondly to give the younger swimmers on island a chance to meet and talk to one of Cayman’s swimming Olympians. Brett spent most of the evening taking photos with his young fans and autographing pictures of himself for

them. He was asked many questions by his enthusiastic and excited supporters and gave advice to the young ones saying, “Hard work pays off, follow your dreams and believe in yourself.” Brett has qualified in the A cut for short events, 50m freestyle and was very close to making the A cut for the 100m freestyle. He said, “It’s really exciting because this time I feel like I have a really good shot. I think I’ll be more prepared to compete at a world level.” When asked how he felt about being a celebrity he said, “I’m just having fun. It’s not for the limelight. I love representing my islands and I’m glad for their support.” Brett’s parents Jim and Laurice

Fraser both expressed their pride and happiness for Brett and his brother Shaune, also a freestyle swimmer going to London. Mr. Fraser said, “You never envision your young kids doing this.” Ms. Fraser followed saying, “This time around they are so focused at getting somewhere, and I’m excited and happy for them.” Everyone at iNews would like to send congratulations and good luck to both Brett and Shaune and good luck to all those athlete’s representing Cayman in the London 2012 Olympics. iStrange Ohio shop’s classical music seems to cut loitering COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Shoppers and employees say an Ohio convenience store has fewer people hanging around and hassling customers since the business started blaring classical music. Customers tell WBNS-TV (http://bit.ly/qWqMfK) that loitering has declined quickly outside the United Dairy Farmers location in the Columbus Short North neighborhood. Workers who’ve also noticed a change say the new music went on earlier this week as part of upgrades at the store. Shopper Allie Beck says the classical music is loud — she can hear it all the way down the street. But she says it’s an improvement over all the people who used to ask for change or bother passers-by outside the store.

FOLSOM, Calif. (AP) — Most inmates are trying to get out of prison, but authorities say they caught a California parolee trying to sneak back in. Corrections Sgt. Tony Quinn says 48-year-old Marvin Lane Ussery was spotted late Wednesday night scaling the 7-foot tall, barbed wiretopped fence that encircles a large wooded area behind the California State Prison in Sacramento. Quinn says Ussery served time at New Folsom for robbery before he was paroled in June 2009. Officials are investigating whether Ussery was attempting to smuggle in drugs or cell phones, but say they haven’t found any contraband. Ussery is being held in Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of violating his parole and being an ex-convict on prison property.

Waste plan is rubbish say residents WHERE FINE FOOD IS MATCHED BY BEAUTIFUL SCENERY on the waterfront located on the edge of the

Caribbean Sea

The 58-acre George Town Landfill otherwise known as Mount Trashmore.

Tad Stoner tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

Bodden Town residents have outlined fears of leakage, smell and uncontrolled growth at the proposed 110acre Dart Realty- Cayman Islands government wastemanagement complex, scheduled for construction near Breakers. Details of the project were unveiled at a Thursday night, Bodden Town Civic Centre meeting, where Premier McKeeva Bush and most of the United Democratic Party leadership gathered with representatives from Dart Realty, offering a 45-minute slide show and extensive descriptions of the organisations’ “ForCaymanAlliance” project. A 30-year, $1.2 billion programme of investment, construction and community welfare, the Dartgovernment partnership seeks to revitalise a lagging economy, while freeing the 58-acre George Town Landfill for development, relocating the site to Bodden Town as part of a new waste-management plan. “Do you know the dangers?” one audience member asked the 10-member panel. “No dump ever created has not had a leak. Out of this public-private partnership, we are getting a dump.” Another, citing her own experience to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

in Florida, worried that Cayman’s summer heat would cause pervasive stench at the site. Others worried about the types of jobs that would be available. “There is no proposal to put a dump in Bodden Town,” Minister of Education and West Bay MLA Rolston Anglin replied, pointing out the site would be engineered -- lined, sealed and enclosed – to counter any problems. “It will be properly designed and sealed,” he said, “and the [George Town] landfill engineered to try to address the national tragedy that is the dump. “I visited two landfill sites in the US when I was a backbencher and researching possible solutions. I saw a site in Springfield, Massachusetts and directly across the road was a shopping centre with a Burger King and two restaurants.” Minister for Health Mark Scotland said the Bodden Town wastemanagement site had not been intended to create employment. “Our approach to the site was not to bring jobs.” he said. “The current dump is the most serious environmental problem in the last 20 years, 30 years. We researched the new site: It will have a liner, be

sealed and the leachate collected.” Alternative siting in East End was unacceptable because of the freshwater lens in the area supplying most of Grand Cayman’s tap water. The Bodden Town location, he said, “is high and dry and does not have any flooding.” Dart will spend between US$32.5 million and US$42.5 million to “close, remediate and relocate” the George Town landfill, and another US$26.5 million to build the waste-management facility, which government will operate. In its early phases, the facility will include leachate holding tanks, a gas flare compound, collection points for derelict vehicles and for waste oil and hazardous liquids, tyre storage and processing, a medical-waste incinerator and new access roads and equipment storage. Later phases will include management areas for hurricane debris and constriction waste, a baling and transfer station and waste-to-energy conversion. Visibly frustrated, Mr Anglin scolded opponents, saying the country needed to think of the future. “We are an island 22 miles long.” he said. “In West Bay, we are proposing to close 2,400 feet of road, which is about 24 seconds of ocean view, and people are opposed. You say you would rather not have sustainable economic development for 24 seconds of ocean view?”

Robbers strike again in George Town

Cayman Islands Netball Association

Kevin Creary kevin.creary@ieyenews.com

The owner of the auto store that was the latest victim of armed robbery says there are a number of factors as to why the current crime rate is so high. Keith Parker says although Thursday’s robbery at his store on Eastern Avenue wasn’t the first theft, it was the first time a gun was used. Thugs threatened a cashier before fleeing with the contents of the cash register and the member of staff’s handbag. Mr Parker says he believes high unemployment and a poor economy may be reasons why crime has escalated. But he says it all forms part of a world wide problem. He said: “This is the first time since I started operation in 1996 that we are having an armed robbery. “We have had two or three previous break-ins, but they were all after hours. Very little was taken in the previous break-ins, the robbers broke the glass of the door.” Mr. Parker says that while the specially installed CCTV cameras are effective at identifying mannerisms of suspects, it cannot truly provide the quality identification required by police. ‘To be honest, based on the types of crime we are seeing today, the CCTV cameras are not going to be of much benefit. You may be able to see the suspect’s mannerisms and other minor clues but that is all.

and the good new days, and even in these present days. I am not happy with what is going on with crime these days; it could be because of the economy, or high unemployment, but it is part of a world wide scale problem,” He said. According to police reports, no shots were fired, and no one was hurt during the robbery. In a desperate effort to increase the success of their gun amnesty, the police have introduced their “cash for guns” initiative. During the “Cash for Guns” drive, guns and ammunition can be sold to the police, no questions asked. The amount of money in the cash register and the employee’s handbag could not be determined. “The woman who was working is very traumatized as she was the person who had the gun pointed to her and also she lost her identification which was in her purse.” The Caymanian Businessman says his business tries to guide employees on crime prevention and response techniques, but admitted that he is skeptical about the effectiveness of using strategy with unpredictable bandits. “Businesses and their staffs are not always capable of dealing with extra ordinary situations in a normal way. There is no training that can deal with people that are acting in an irrational and illegal way. We will be making some security adjustments and in the operation measures of our business.” According to the businessman, the escalation in crime, although disappointing, should not discourage investment in the country. “The police can only do so much, they need the support of the public. Car crash plunges Cayman into darkness

Are you trying to cope with Job Loss Issues?

Paul Kennedy paul.kennedy@ieyenews.com

A minor car crash brought chaos to Cayman and caused an almost island wide power black out. Two cars collided on Sparky Drive just after 9pm on Thursday night. Although the driver and passenger of one car had to be cut free from the mangled wreckage, their injuries were not serious. But his Ford Ranger smashed into the fence at the Caribbean Utility Company and then into a transmission pole – causing a huge power outage. A spokesman for the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service said: “Police attended the scene and shortly thereafter joined by Fire Service after it was observed that two persons were trapped in the vehicle that crashed through the fence. “The collision occurred when a Silver Honda Integra and Gold Ford Ranger were both travelling south on Sparky Drive coming from the gocart race track when the Ford Ranger lost control and collided with the right rear end of Honda Integra and then subsequently collided with the CUC fence and a pole on the inside of the premises which caused the power to go out. “Damages were done to the pole. The Ford Ranger received extensive damages to the entire vehicle. The Honda Integra received minor damages. “Driver and passenger of Ford Ranger were extracted from the vehicle by Fire Service officers and transported to the hospital via ambulance as they both sustained minor cuts and bruises. Occupants of the Honda Integra sustained no injuries.” CUC crews were on the scene immediately and managed to get the power back up and running just over an hour after the crash. Pat Bynoe-Clarke, Corporate Communications manager of CUC, said: “The outage lasted from 9:08 p.m. until 10:15 p.m. when power was restored to all customers. “CUC’s crews responded immediately to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

and worked quickly to restore power in a safe and reliable manner. “CUC apologises for any inconvenience the outage may have caused.” Meanwhile a lightening strike caused massive disruption to WestStar television’s output. Technicians were still, on Friday, working to fix the problem. A bolt of lightening hit multiple satellite antennas just before 6pm on Thursday.

Ms. Gomez will also be available on Saturday morning Aug 27 from 8am 12pm for meetings with individuals. No fees involved! Light Refreshments served!

Head WestStar Engineer, Charles Stone said: “Unfortunately, it is not safe to work on the damaged satellites during a lightning storm. Once the storm had passed, repairs began immediately and the crew was able to restore all but the following channels: 12, 21, 24, 27 & 115. According to a WestStar representative, this is a top priority for WestStar Engineers and they are working to restore all connections as soon as possible.

Police reveal BBM disappointment Tad Stoner tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

Police are “very disappointed” at the public response to their appeals for information about BBM exchanges with Kerran Baker, missing more than two weeks, saying many people had contacted her prior to her disappearance. “She was a very heavy BBM user,” said Detective Superintendent Marlon Bodden on Friday. “We’ve been sitting here for 11 days now, and have made significant appeals to the public, asking the whereabouts or significant information. “Despite that, we have not received any serious feedback. We have made specific appeals for anyone who may have made contact with Kerran via BBM,” he said. Police were “very aware” that friends were constantly in touch with Ms Baker, 25, missing since 30 July from her Bodden Town home. “We are aware that many people have contacted her,” Chief Superintendent John Jones said, “but we have not heard one response from anyone. Please, if you had contact with her on the evening of July 30, get in contact with us. “It is reasonable to assume that any traffic would have been with a friend, and why not contact us if you’re a friend -- just to say, ‘yes, I spoke to her’? We are appealing to

Kerran’s friends to help us, to help her family.” Mr Jones said. Ms Baker’s mother, Sandra Anthony, father Wilmot Anthony, sister Toney-Anne Anthony and aunt “Patsy” Anthony-Beadle, arrived in Cayman from Jamaica nearly 10 days ago, vowing to wait for a resolution. Mr Bodden said two recent leads had proved dead-ends. “We have been asked about Weststar and whether someone may have tried to obtain services,” he said, referring to reports that a cable TV installer had been in Ms Baker’s Arrow Drive home on Saturday. “We have gotten to the bottom of it and proven there was nothing sinister about the WestStar service,” he said. “We also heard about dinner plans that Kerran had,” he said of a planned Saturday-evening meal with a friend in East End. “We listened to that and realised that, yes, there were plans for dinner. We ‘bottomed out ‘that inquiry and there was nothing sinister,” he said. He declined to discuss the “materials” discovered last week, reportedly a set of documents found in the vicinity of Pedro Castle where Ms Baker‘s white Honda Civic was found shortly after she vanished. Saying forensic analyses were

Still Missing: Kerran Baker incomplete, Mr Bodden said police were “hoping for something in the near future”. Teams of searchers remained poised, he said, pending any new information, but nothing had been planned immediately. “We still have a fair amount of CCTV footage to go through,” Mr Jones said, “and there are a number of inquiries in relation to seeing people and [tracing] her movements. There may be a need to conduct searches. “We are always reviewing,” he said, “and hopefully, we will be responding to people who phone in and say they have had BBM contact with Kerran.” he said.

Kerran’s house on Arrow Drive was visited by a cable TV installer on the Saturday that she went missing.

Hundreds in court after London riots LONDON (AP) — Police in London have charged almost 600 people with violence, disorder and looting over deadly riots in Britain’s capital, as the city’s mayor said Londoners wanted to see “significant sentences” handed out to the guilty. Across the country, more than 1,700 people have been arrested. Courts in London, Birmingham and Manchester stayed open through a second night to deal with hundreds of alleged offenders, and hundreds of extra police remained on the streets to deter violence as the weekend approached. Hundreds of stores were looted, buildings were set ablaze and five

people died amid the mayhem that broke out Saturday in London and spread over four nights across England. Victims include three men in Birmingham run down by a car as they defended their neighborhood. Police are questioning three suspects on suspicion of murder. And detectives opened a murder inquiry after a 68-year-old a man found in a London street after confronting rioters died of his injuries late Thursday. A 22-year-old man was arrested Friday on suspicion of murder. A man was found with gunshot wounds to the head in south London amid riots on Monday and later died.

Police, meanwhile, hit back against claims they were too soft in their initial response to the disorder.

Slain officer honoured for his service SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jeremy Henwood went to Iraq twice as a Marine and returned in February from a combat tour in one of Afghanistan’s most troubled regions. But it was at home in San Diego where he was killed, shot in the head in an unprovoked attack during a routine police patrol. The 36-year-old police officer will be honoured for his service at home and overseas on Friday. California Gov. Jerry Brown is expected to attend. Henwood, a Marine Corps Reserve captain who had been a police officer for four years, died Sunday. Police say Dejon White flashed his headlights behind Henwood’s patrol car, as if to

seek help, then pulled alongside the officer and shot him. Police shot White to death in a confrontation minutes after Henwood was hit on Saturday. They said White, 23, shot another man in the parking lot of an In-N-Out Burger restaurant shortly before the attack on the officer. “We will always remember him as a patriot and hero,” Police Chief William Lansdowne said Thursday. “His service to the people of San Diego will never be forgotten.” The decorated Marine from Bexar, Texas, was due for a promotion to major on Sept. 1. He is survived by his parents and two younger siblings.

UN says cholera epidemic in Somalia GENEVA (AP) — World Health Organization (WHO) officials said Friday that famine-hit Somalia faces a cholera epidemic as dirty water and poor sanitation are leading to an increase in outbreaks of the disease. Officials say cases of acute watery diarrhea — an important indicator of the risk of cholera — are now at 4,272 in Somalia — an 11 percent rise on last week’s WHO reported figure of 3,839. WHO public health adviser Dr. Michel Yao told reporters in Geneva on Friday that the number of cholera cases has also risen sharply this year, with officials confirming 18 cases in to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

the 30 lab samples taken in recent days from people living in the capital, Mogadishu. Yao said the 60 percent infection rate confirms there is a “high risk” of the disease spreading quickly — “so we can say we have an epidemic.” The random samples, which were tested in a lab in the capital, were drawn from among 4,272 samples from people who have suffered the diarrhea, he said. So far, he said, there have been 181 acute watery diarrhearelated deaths. The United States estimates drought and famine in Somalia have

killed more than 29,000 children under the age of 5. Millions face the risk of starvation amid Somalia’s worst drought in 60 years.

Dump NIMBY Colin Wilson colin.wilson@ieyenews.com

With the announcement recently that Grand Cayman’s landfill will re-locate near to Breakers, Bodden Town it has brought a loud NIMBY reaction from the District’s residents. NIMBY stands for ‘Not In My Backyard’ and this was understandably the feeling from the meeting on Thu (12) night

Our Eye

held at Bodden Town Civic Centre. The residents are fearful of leakage, uncontrolled growth and obnoxious smells from the proposed 110 acre Dart Realty and C.I. Government deal. One only has to see and smell the Mount Trashmore dump in George Town to make anyone say NIMBY! However, technology has changed and usually for the better. The Dart

Group will develop a new modern eco-waste park, engineered, lined, sealed and enclosed and they, together with the Premier and other government ministers, did a 45 minute slide show presentation at Thursday’s meeting. Whether anyone will be convinced by the presentation, we will have to wait and see but wherever it goes it will always raise the cry of NIMBY.

All the world’s an island In Sotto Voce

Carol-Ann Rudy carol-ann.rudy@ieyenews.com

He had a voice that dripped honey on the phone, a baritone that almost made the wires hum with its vibrations. Not having seen him in person, the listener conjured up a man with the features of George Clooney and Brad Pitt rolled into one. His choice of words and the pace of his speech didn’t hurt either. He could have been chewing people out and they would still be charmed. She had a voice that grated. It fell on the ears with the decibels of a drill. Apart from volume, her speech was nasal, her laugh a cackle. A happy person, she laughed a lot, forcing one listener to use earplugs in her vicinity. The difference between them was striking in person: he was so homely he was downright ugly, and she was remarkably beautiful, a young Angelina Jolie look-alike. But his voice came from the chest and the back of his mouth while hers was pushed through her nasal cavities. Replying to her in a soft voice made no difference. It usually works, especially with children, but she didn’t take the hint. It’s downright unfair that women have a naturally higher-pitched voice than most men, although that’s also what makes a highly-valued soprano. However, when combined with a nasal pitch a woman’s voice can be a drawback in the workplace, especially if she is expected to make frequent public appearances and speeches. The characteristics of one’s voice also tend to become more pronounced the older one grows. It’s like the difference between wrinkles on a woman and wrinkles on a man; for one it is losing one’s looks, for the other it is gaining character, and the same seems true of the difference in voice quality between the sexes. Have you paid attention to the voices, either sex, of your local television news hosts? They usually

12

reflect the region they are from and the community they serve, but somewhere between the local desk and the national desk, there appears to be a side trip to the voice coach. Nationally-seen hosts’ voices become remarkably smoother and easy on the ears. According to speech therapists, there are only a couple of consonants that are truly nasal, “m”, “n”, and “ng”. Vowels and the rest of the consonants belong further down, towards the back of the mouth. Speech is prime, and we learn from family and community what we should sound like, but it doesn’t have to be that way. A voice can be modified to reduce an unpleasant nasal twang and high pitch. Of course, if you’ve grown up in an area where a nasal twang is prevalent, you may not notice or be irritated by it—until you spend time in another part of the country where nasality is not common. In Miami a few years ago, notorious for attracting a certain kind of “operator”, I observed a man who held a room full of wellestablished businessmen in his sway for several hours with his mesmerizing, slightly gravelly voice.

The flow of his speech seemed effortless. He spun details into fabulous future fortunes. He made his proposal seem within their grasp through the power of his presence, his voice. It was as though a sonic wave was set up that reverberated hypnotically through the listeners’ bodies. They hung on every word. What they didn’t discover until much later, and which I was only beginning to suspect, was that he was the consummate con man. All that detail so lovingly woven into his speech, however, would prove to be his downfall; he couldn’t remember it all and the details would change from day to day. Eventually, his investors figured him out, but by that time he had cleared out. The contribution of colourful colloquialisms and idioms is an important characteristic of speech, and the contribution of physical beauty helps others to be more willing to listen to a speaker, but let’s face it: neither is a substitute for speaking in a soft voice, “in sotto voce”. Amazingly, it’s often the person who speaks in sotto voce in a crowd—assuming he or she has something of value to say—that will be listened to! to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

“Cancer is devastating but if you have support… it makes it much easier to cope”

“In my early years of cancer I joined the society and through this relationship I saw the worth of the organisation to others who had cancer. I have worked with the society in ensuring help for others, in particular when they had to go overseas. The society is irreplaceable and cancer detection and support service has given others a greater chance to survive. The Cancer Society’s role is very important in giving comfort and support to cancer survivors in the Cayman Islands. People are happy to be with and around the society as it gives hope.” Ms. Lucille Seymour

National Archive building renamed Christopher Tobutt christopher.tobutt@ieyenews.com

“The Journey is the Reward” What if you could choose who to be despite your circumstances?

Coaching works for you to identify and achieve your most important goals.

The Cayman Islands National Archive building was renamed the Dr. Philip E. Pedley National Archive Building recently at a special service held outside the building in George Town. Dr. Pedley, who passed away in May 2010 after a battle with cancer, came to the Cayman Islands from England in 1971. He played a lead role in the National Archive’s establishment, becoming its first Director, as well as in its subsequent development for more than 15 years.

Several government officials paid tribute to Dr. Pedley during the service. Deputy Governor Donovan Ebanks spoke about Dr. Pedley’s love for, and identification with the Cayman people, to the point of being accepted by many as a native-born Caymanian. “Dr. Pedley was considered by many to be a true Caymanian, and while he could imitate the Caymanian accent he could never shed his English one. I often joked with him that if he could only get rid of that English accent, he could finally pass for a Caymanian. But he loved this country, and it was evident through his steadfast dedication to

the vision of giving the history of the Cayman Islands back to its people… that he loved all things Caymanian,” Mr. Ebanks said. Hon. Premier, McKeeva Bush spoke warmly of his contact with Dr. Pedley, and explained that he was in favour of naming buildings after individuals who, like Dr. Pedley, had been key to the establishment and development of the institutions they represented. West Bay MLA Rolston Anglin said: “As the tributes clearly pointed out, when a person does things for the right reasons, good comes to them.” A common theme throughout all the

to honour “True Caymanian” tributes was that Dr. Pedley touched the lives of all the people he came in contact with, and had a way of teaching people without ever speaking down to them. Many spoke of a kind and humble man who, ‘touched the lives of all those he met,’ and ‘who was a friend to all.’ In an interview with iNews, National Archive director Kimlon Lawrence said: “Dr. Pedley will be remembered for his engaging and gentle spirit, a man of integrity, commitment and dedication. He was humble about any recognition given to him and preferred to work tirelessly in the background, whilst ensuring that staff receive recognition

for their work. His contribution to the establishment of the National Archive cannot be overstated and he will always be credited for laying the foundation. He had passion for all things Caymanian. He endeavoured to ignite that same passion by making Cayman’s history accessible to the public through numerous publications, research and outreach programmes.” Dr. Pedley came to the Cayman Islands from England in 1971, aged 20, to visit his brother, Dr. Julian Pedley, but loved the islands so much he decided to stay. After getting a job as a lab technician

at the Cayman Islands High School, Dr. Pedley was able to pursue a PhD in English Literature in Pennsylvania, USA. It was in the late 1980’s that he was asked to start the National Archive which was established by law in 1991. The archive grew from a collection of documents kept in cardboard boxes on the top floor of the old Tower Building in George Town to its present location, a purpose-built building which presently acts as the home to thousands of historical photographs, documents and reference books, along with transcripts of nearly two thousand oral history interviews.

So... What really is an Android? Claire O’Dea

One of the most recent additions to the Tech Dictionary is “Android” which can be easily defined as “an operating software”. Like Apple’s iOS, Android operating software focuses on efficiency and enhancing the features of mobile devices such as cell phones and tablets. In 2005, Android, an infant company, was acquired by Google and has since produced a flexible, upgradeable system. The debut Android platform phone, the ‘HTC Dream’, was released in 2008. As consumer awareness grew, 2010 was a year of great successes for Android, mainly attributable to HTC’s collaboration with Google and launching its flagship Android device, the ‘Nexus One’, and Samsung releasing the ‘Nexus-S’. Since the original version of the software in 2007, many features have been added to enhance performance, functionality and user-friendliness. Android’s open source nature (anyone has access to the coding) has resulted in companies and individuals developing many innovative applications. The Android Market (application store run by Google) now has over 200,000 applications which have contributed significantly to the extended functionality of the devices. Android’s multitasking capabilities, customization, performance and open source platform are the main contributors to this system’s rapid growth. It has gained much popularity among developers and has proved a huge success in the Smartphone market. It is expected that Android will further establish brand image and awareness and continue to prove very successful in the highly competitive Smartphone market.

We continue our serialisation of Anne by Constance Fenimore Woolson

Anne

“I do not like Mr. Walters”

Part 23 “I should be welcome, at any rate; she adores me.” “Does she, indeed!” “Yes, Miss Douglas, she does. She pretends otherwise, but that is always the way with women. Oh! I know the world.” “You are only one year older than I am.” “In actual time, perhaps; but twenty years older in knowledge.” “What will you be, then, when you come back from college? An old man?” “By no means; for I shall stay where I am. But in the mean time you will catch up with me.” Handsome Rast had passed through his novitiate, so he thought. His knowledge of the world was derived partly from Lieutenant Walters, who, although fresh from West Point, was still several years older than young Rolando, and patronized him accordingly, and partly from a slender, low-voiced Miss Carew, who was thirty, but appeared twenty, after the manner of slender yellow-white blondes who have never possessed any rose- tints, having always been willowy and amber-colored. Miss Carew sailed, for a summer’s amusement through the Great Lakes of the West; and then returned Eastward with the opinion that they were but so many raw, blank, inland oceans, without sensations or local coloring enough to rouse her. The week on the island, which was an epoch in Rast’s life, had held for her but languid interest; yet even the languid work of a master-hand has finish and power, and Rast was melancholy and silent for fifteen days after the enchantress had departed. Then he wrote to her one or two wild letters, and received no answer; then he grew bitter. Then Walters came, with his cadet’s deep experience in life, and the youth learned from him, and reappeared on the surface again with a to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

tinge of cynicism, which filled Anne with wonder. For he had never told her the story of the summer; it was almost the only event in his life, which she had not shared. But it was not that he feared to tell her, they were as frank with each other as two children; it was because he thought she would not understand it. “I do not like Mr. Walters,” she said, one day. “He was very much liked at the Point, I assure you,” said Rast, with significant emphasis. “By the ladies, I mean, who come there in the summer.” “How could they like him, with that important, egotistical air?” “But it is to conquer him they like,” said Tita, looking up from her corner. “Hear the child!” said Rast, laughing. “Are you going to conquer, Tita?” “Yes,” said Tita, stroking the cat which shared the corner with her—a soft coated yellow pussy that was generally sleepy and quiet, but which had, nevertheless, at times, extraordinary fits of galloping round in a circle, and tearing the bark from the trees as though she was possessed—an eccentricity of character which the boys attributed to the direct influence of Satan. Miss Lois lived in the churchhouse. It was an ugly house; but then, as is often said of a plain woman, “so good!” It did not leak or rattle, or fall down or smoke, or lean or sag, as did most of the other houses in the village, in regard to their shingles, their shutters, their chimneys, their

sidewalls, and their rooftrees. It stood straightly and squarely on its stone foundation, and every board, nail and latch was in its proper position. Years before, missionaries had been sent from New England to work among the Indians of this neighborhood, who had obtained their ideas of Christianity, up to that time, solely from the Roman Catholic priests, who had succeeded each other in an unbroken line from that Adventurous Jesuit, the first explorer of these inland seas, Father Marquette. The Presbyterians came, established their mission, built a meetinghouse, a school-house, and a house for their pastor, the buildings being as solid as their belief. Money was collected for this enterprise from all over New England, that old-time, devout, self- sacrificing community whose sternness and faith were equal; tall spare men came westward to teach the Indians, earnest women with bright steadfast eyes and lathlike forms were their aiders, wives, and companions. Among these came Miss Lois—then young Lois Hinsdale—carried Westward by an aunt whose missionary zeal was burning splendidly up an empty chimney which might have been filled with family loves and cares, but was not: shall we say better filled? The missionaries worked faithfully; but as the Indians soon moved further westward, the results of their efforts cannot be statistically estimated now, or the accounts balanced. “The only good ----- is a dead -----,” is a remark that crystallizes the floating opinion of the border. But a border population has not a missionary spirit. New England, having long ago chased out, shot down, and exterminated all her own Indians, had become peaceful and pious, and did not agree with these Western carriers of shot-guns.

Heather Locklear engaged to TV co-star Jack Wagner NEW YORK (AP) — Heather Locklear is engaged to fellow “Melrose Place” actor Jack Wagner. Locklear spokeswoman Sarah Fuller confirmed the engagement on Friday but offered no other details. The actress’ divorce from Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora was finalized in April 2007. She had been dating Wagner since at least 2008. Locklear and Wagner worked together in the 1990s on “Melrose Place,” a spinoff of “Beverly Hills, 90210.” Locklear played Amanda Woodward. Wagner played Dr. Peter Burns. Locklear also starred on the primetime soap opera “Dynasty” and the William Shatner police drama “T.J. Hooker.” Wagner isn’t just an actor. He sang

the 1980s pop hit “All I Need.” And he’s an accomplished golfer who five years ago won the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship, an event usually won by professional athletes.

Spyware Detection

Indicators of spyware and how to get rid of it Georgina Wilcox georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com

I have written on this subject before and after a number of calls I received on this subject I decided to go into this serious problem in greater detail. Anti spyware software provides the best spyware detection capabilities. Even though programmes, such as the Windows Task Manager indicate programmes and processes running on your system at any given time, you are not likely to know which programmes and processes are supposed to be running. More importantly, spyware may be embedded in other software such that the particular source of spyware is not indicated in the task list. You need spyware detection capability that will continuously monitor your system and seek out active and suspicious programmess and processes. The effects of spyware are so vast that you are not likely to be able to detect the existence of spyware until it seriously degrades the performance of your computer system. Some of the nuances of spyware include its ability to collect and log personal information without your knowledge and then transmit this information to third parties. The types of information collected may range from usernames and passwords to websites visited to social security numbers and credit card numbers. Though the direct effects of spyware may only be to slow the performance of your system, the indirect effect of having your personal information transmitted to third parties provides those parties with necessary information to perform a variety of other activities that may range from sending you unsolicited advertisements to stealing your identity. Some indications that your system may have been infected with spyware may include any combination of the following: • An increase in disk space usage

20

• Increased traffic that clogs networks • Increased CPU activities • Unexpected application crashes • Total system crashes • A continuous intrusion of popup ads • Banner ads, some with annoying flashing animations

When spyware consumes your system resources and you experience crashes and system instability, you are not likely to know the cause of the problem unless spyware detection software alerts you to malicious code. There are also some obvious indications of attempts to install spyware. Detection involves being aware of installation processes and avoiding installations from unknown vendors. If you are in doubt as to whether to proceed with a software installation you should avoid using click boxes provided in installation windows and close such windows using the ‘X’ in the upper right hand corner of the dialog box. Likewise, if a download asks you to install ActiveX components and you are not sure if these components are needed, avoid the installation. Only install software that you want from trusted vendors. Most spyware detection algorithms include an examination of files, shortcuts, cookies and Windows registry keys for signs that spyware is resident. Detection algorithms also examine processes that are running to seek spyware in active memory on your computer. Detailed reports of spyware detection events are then able to indicate the names of

suspected spyware. Spyware detection software searches registry entries for modifications that are typical of spyware products. The detection software checks running processes for indications of processes that are known to be characteristic of spyware. The software will compare visited URLs, Active X controls that have executed and cookies that have generated against spyware networks included in its database. Some spyware detection software includes checksum or hash algorithms that will check your files against a database of known spyware files. Other spyware detection software will query directory names and file names for a match against those stored in a database of spyware file and directory names. This type of detection is less efficient since spyware may be stored in several different locations with different file names. The detection mechanisms of anti spyware software will only be effective if the software is updated. New spyware is constantly developed and your anti spyware software must be updated so that the latest threat definitions are included in detection algorithms. Scans must also be run periodically to query against the latest database of definitions. Upon spyware detection, most anti spyware software may be configured to automatically remove or quarantine any infected files. Such software may also be configured to prompt you before taking any action. Anti spyware software are included in firewalls and other advertised privacy suites and security tools. Spyware detection that is provided as part of security suites tends to be weaker than stand alone solutions. While some spyware detection tools provide more indications and alerts than others to possible spyware, many false positives may result from software that includes methods of over aggressive scanning. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

APPLY SUNSCREEN PROPERLY.

The end of the school year is here and savvy moms and dads by now have made all the arrangements for summer. Summer camps and leisurely days at the pool or beach are just a few of the summer rituals for many families. However if you're tempted to let your child play outdoors for even a few minutes without proper sun protection, you might want to think twice. Adolescence and childhood are critical periods during which exposure to UV radiation is more likely to contribute to skin cancer in later life. Children with fair skin, blond or red hair and blue or green eyes are at the highest risk of sunburn. But darker-skinned children also need sun protection. With this in mind, it’s important that parents teach their children how to enjoy fun in the sun safely.

LIMIT OUTDOOR PLAYTIME BETWEEN 10A.M. AND 4P.M.

Apply a thick, even coat to all exposed areas 20 - 30 minutes before your child goes out in the sun. Choose a sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher. Make sure it's labeled "broad spectrum," which means it blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight. For your little ones, sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide should be selected as these compounds are less irritating than others. Sunscreen sticks are best for the face because they are sweat proof and less likely to drip. Don't forget nose, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck; lips can also burn, so apply a lip balm with SPF protection. Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours, or after sweating or swimming.

Some medications increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, so make sure to ask your doctor whether your child may be at risk. Prescription antibiotics and acne medications are the most notorious culprits, but when in doubt, ask.

Wearing protective clothing and hats is one of the primary ways of warding off UV damage. When wet, light coloured clothing transmits just as much sunlight as bare skin. Keep your kids covered with dark colours, long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. And don't forget the accessories: sunglasses with UV protection to guard against burned corneas, and hats to prevent sunburned scalps and faces. Protective clothing, hats with wide brims, and sunglasses are just as important for babies. At the beach, bring along a large umbrella.

Parents, you are the best teacher by practicing sun safety yourself. If your child sees you following sun safety rules, he'll take them for granted and follow suit. Teach every member of the family how to protect their skin and eyes. With proper supervision, children can learn to protect themselves and enjoy summer fun without sacrificing the health of their skin.

Snoop Dogg launches youth football in Chicago CHICAGO (AP) — Snoop Dogg says his youth football league isn’t just about teaching kids sports, but about giving them a positive release for their energy and introducing them to role models.

COVER FROM HEAD TO TOE.

Avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun's rays are at their strongest. Even on cloudy or cooler days, ultraviolet (UV) rays remain strong. Shady spots can be just as tricky because of reflected light. If your child is playing outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply ample sunscreen.

WATCH OUT FOR MEDICATIONS.

The rapper and actor launched the inaugural season of the Snoop Youth Football League in Chicago on Saturday. He danced and high-fived his way through the crowd at the Chicago Indoor Sports Facility and seemed intent on meeting all of the 100 kids who showed up. Snoop Dogg says he started the league to give kids, especially those in high-crime neighborhoods, an outlet. The league is open to youth ages 7 to 14.

US skier tossed off team after incident on flight NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. Ski Team has dismissed an 18-yearold member of its development squad after he was accused of getting drunk and then urinating on a fellow passenger aboard a JetBlue flight to New York City. Robert “Sandy” Vietze (VEETZ), of Warren, Vt., was detained by police at New York’s Kennedy Airport Wednesday morning after arriving on a red-eye flight from Portland, Ore. A spokeswoman for the Port Authority Police said federal prosecutors later decided not to pursue criminal charges. But that didn’t get the teen out of trouble.

Manchester United are firm favourites to win the Premiership as the English season gets underway this week. Sir Alex Ferguson’s men are hoping for a 20th title but face competition from big spenders and neighbours Manchester City. Pundits feel it will be a tough season ahead for Arsenal who have lost their influential captain Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona. Gunners Manager Arsene

WHILE STOCKS LAST!!

Wenger is the bookmakers favourite to be first boss to get the bullet once the season starts. Chelsea under new coach Andrea Villa Boas will pose a threat but the young Portuguese manager needs to get Fernando Torres firing on all cylinders. A revitilised Liverpool team, under new manager Kenny Dalglish will also challenge the top four especially after splashing out on Stewart Dowing, Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam and this week, full-back Jose Enrique. New boys Swansea, Norwich and Queens Park Rangers face a long season as they fight to retain Premier League status. But it’ll be all eyes on Manchester United. They kicked off their fight to regain the title away at West Bromwich Albion but will do so without summer target Wesley Sneijder. The Dutch international looks certain to stay at Inter Milan after United cooled on a possible move to Old Trafford.

The officials are suspected of being offered or taking $40,000 in cash to back Bin Hammam against FIFA President Sepp Blatter, then denying their actions to investigators led by former FBI director Louis Freeh. FIFA said Thursday the suspects from 11 countries include Colin Klass of Guyana, a long-standing ally of former Caribbean soccer boss Jack Warner. FIFA said Klass has been provisionally suspended. The governing body added that the 16 will be invited for new interviews by Freeh’s team as part of an investigation led by Robert Torres, a judge from Guam. “It is important to note that the investigations are still ongoing, and that it is therefore possible that further proceedings could be opened in the future,” FIFA said in a statement. The list also includes Mark Bob Forde from Barbados, who was a FIFA-approved international referee for almost 20 years. Haiti federation president Yves Jean-Bart is also under investigation. He made a speech at the FIFA Congress on June 1 criticizing English officials who wanted Blatter’s election delayed while corruption allegations were fully investigated. Dominican soccer federation president Osiris Guzman and vice president Felix Ledesma are also being investigated.
