ROAD CARNAGE

Pregnant woman and unborn child killed in car smash Paul Kennedy paul.kennedy@ieyenews.com

A pregnant woman and her unborn child have died following a car crash in East End. Karen Edwards was thrown from the mangled wreckage during the smash and rushed to Cayman Islands Hospital. She was pronounced dead on arrival and despite the best efforts of surgeons they were unable to save the child’s life. Two other people in the vehicle at the time remain in a serious condition in hospital. A third has been released. The driver of the car, a 24-yearold woman, has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and causing death by dangerous driving. She is also in a serious condition in hospital and late yesterday afternoon was airlifted to Miami for further treatment. It is understood Miss Edwards was in the full term of her pregnancy and was waiting to give birth any day.

Following the tragic death of their mother, they were both being comforted by close family members. The accident happened just after 7pm on Sunday night. Police received a call that a car had crashed near Sea View Road. It appears the car was heading towards Bodden Town when it

collided with a tree. When the emergency services arrived they discovered one of the people in the car had been taken to hospital by a passer-by. During a search of the bush they found Miss Edwards, 25, lying near the wreckage face down and unresponsive. Another woman was found outside the white SUV while the third was trapped in the wreckage and had to be cut free by firefighters. Continued on page 7

Twelve year old Izaak Chesney-Beales is a whole new person. His remarkable transformation is all thanks to an 11-year-old bottlenose dolphin called Ziggy who lives at the Dolphin Cove here in Grand Cayman. Izaak visited Dolphin Cove with his family to help with his left side weakness his mother, Rae explained, “It’s almost like he forgets that it’s there.” He would have trouble gripping with his left hand and he used a wheel chair for mobility. The family tried all different types of therapy in the UK but still couldn’t find anything suitable for young Izaak. Rae heard about the DHT here in Cayman and she began to research the idea. Izaak and his family took a 10day programme that included a combination of sessions and motivation from Ziggy. His father Stephen Chesney-Beales, from Norfolk, said, “During the therapy at Dolphin Cove we saw changes while we were there. “Izaak did have some episodes during the therapy but those were very well dealt with by Ziggy the dolphin to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

and his therapist. I have always been a bit concerned about his general awareness but the therapy and the dolphin have definitely helped him become more aware of his general surroundings.” Rae added, “He’s more confident, his vocalisation has improved and his eye contact with strangers is much better. As for his left hand, he learnt to grip, toss and hold. He improved his strength and awareness and he’s continuing the improvements at home.” Brian Wright of the Rapid Development Therapy added: “People who come to us are normally at the

iStrange Austrian says he won millions, casino says no BREGENZ, Austria (AP) — It seemed too good to be true — a slot-machine jackpot of almost 43 million euros. And maybe it was. Austrian state broadcaster ORF reports that Behar Merlaku is going to court over the refusal of the Bregenz casino to give him what he considers his win on March 26. Casino officials do not dispute that the gaming machine showed a payout of nearly 43 million euros — almost $62 million. But they say that a malfunctioning computer chip was responsible for what they say was the faulty display. Both sides are going to court. In the meantime, says the ORF website, Merlaku has been banned from the casino in the capital of Austria’s westernmost Voralberg province.

WORTHINGTON, Ohio (AP) — A 94-year-old Ohio woman who woke up to discover that a breakaway blimp had landed in her backyard. The 128-foot-long blimp broke free of its moorings at a Columbus airport during strong winds early Sunday, then drifted to the sky, headed eastward and landed in Lillian Bernhagen’s backyard in Worthington, less than two miles from Ohio State University’s Don Scott airfield. No one was aboard and no injuries were reported. The remnants of a battered blimp were draped over Bernhagen’s picnic table and birdfeeders, covering half her backyard. “I looked out the window and I said, ‘Wow!’” she said. Storms had limited the options authorities had to find the blimp until it was spotted in Bernhagen’s yard. The Federal Aviation Administration tried to locate it via radar, while its owners tried to see it from the ground, said state police spokesman Lt. Rudy Zupanc.

My son said Jeremiah is sleeping Tad Stoner tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

In dramatic and tearful testimony yesterday, Andy Barnes, father of 4-year-old Jeremiah, told the Grand Court how Devon Anglin had shot his son through the eye, killing him as he left the Hell Road Esso station. The testimony came on the second day of a three-week trial in which Mr Anglin stands accused of five counts, including murder, attempted murder, possession of a firearm and threatening violence. Mr Anglin pleaded innocent to all charges. Called by the prosecution, Mr Barnes told visiting Jamaican Grand Court Justice Howard Cooke that Mr Anglin had fired at him repeatedly as he drove his white Chevrolet Malibu past the gunman in the forecourt of the petrol station, seeking to escape the fusillade directed at him, his wife Dorlissa Ebanks, in the passenger seat, and sons Jamaul, 6, and Jeremiah, in the rear. “Just as I started to move, he started to come two more feet towards me and started to open fire. He had the gun in both hands. The windows were halfway down, my front windows and the back windows,” Mr Barnes said. “Six to eight shots were fired” in the station, he said, “and continued as I drove away. When I drove around him, he was no more than five feet away. Dorlissa was screaming and jumping inside the car, trying to get the kids to stay in their seats and duck down.” Leaving the station at speed, and turning into Hell Road, Mr Barnes said the shooting continued. “I could hear the gun firing, plus there was a shot through the front passenger door near the wing mirror.” Finally driving out of range of the gunman, he said, “I looked to see if everyone was all right,” Mr Barnes told prosecutor Andrew Radcliffe. “They were not all right,” he said, weeping into a tissue. “My next son, Jamaul, told me that Jeremiah was sleeping. what was happening. He had been shot through his eye. I drove to West Bay police station. I wouldn’t even know what to call the state I was in,” he said. An ambulance was called and took Jeremiah to George Town Hospital. I left [the station] with my son, and stayed at the hospital for a number of hours after that, ” Mr Barnes said. Doctors pronounced Jeremiah dead about 8:30. Less than one hour later, at 9:20, police arrested Mr Anglin in West Bay, charged with the attempted murder of Andy Barnes. “The arresting officer said he appeared to be drunk,” Mr Radcliffe told the court. “Devon Anglin complained, saying that ‘Andy Barnes earlier today tried to kill me with a 12 gauge’. Asked if he had reported it, he said ‘no, I don’t talk to police.’ He was handcuffed

and taken to George Town police station,” the prosecutor said. “He was verbally abusive as the police swabbed his hands for DNA. He was uncooperative, irritable and threatening, He said it looked like he was being framed and that someone had tried to shoot him at Birch Tree Hill about 8:30 or 9:00. He said he would break out and had shot a man in the face and would start shooting police officers. “He continued to make threats, saying he had access to firearms, including an AK-47 rifle,” Mr Radcliffe said. In a brief interlude, defence attorney John Ryder, QC, indicated that he was likely to contest the identification of Mr Anglin on the grainy CCTV footage, in which the gunman is both masked and hooded. The trial continues.

Just after 7.30pm on Sunday the man was traveling in the back of an open truck along Linford Pierson Highway close to Randyke Gardens. A spokeswoman for the RCIPS said: “It appears that the man had been sitting on the back of the open truck when the driver had pulled into the side of the road to allow an ambulance to pass. “As the truck then moved back into the carriageway, he fell from the back of the vehicle, rolled across the road and was struck by a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.” Additional reporting Tricia Russell-Jones and Pauline McField.

Phone tapping for crime fighting Colin Wilson colin.wilson@ieyenews.com

The interception of telecommunications messages has now been written into Cayman Islands law books. At a meeting held in the Government Information Services Board Room last Thursday (11), Dep. Governor Donovan Ebanks announced to members of the media that with the passing of the “Information and Communications Technology Authority (Interception of Telecommunication Messages) Regulations, 2011”, law enforcement agencies in the Cayman islands will now be able to lawfully intercept telecommunication messages. “This will strengthen our crime prevention capabilities considerably,” he said. Also present at the meeting was Franz Manderson Dep. Chief Secretary, Eric Bush Chairman Cayman Crime-stoppers and RCIP Dep. Commissioner Stephen Brougham. The Dep. Governor, because of the sensitive nature of the law, called the meeting to dispel the immediate concerns he knew the media would have and answer questions. Mr. Manderson gave a brief overview of the new regulations explaining that lawful interception of telecommunication messages is the legally approved surveillance of telecommunications such as voice (cell) and text messages. The person who approves the interception is the Governor. He may issue a warrant of interception for a specific period of time and may consult the Attorney General prior to the issue of the warrant. When questioned on the time period it was established that it could be as long as one month, which could be repeated up to a total of three months. Only in exceptional circumstances would the period be extended beyond this. Dep. Commissioner Brougham said the new regulations do not give the police a free hand in monitoring anyone’s communications. The

8

regulations provide for robust checks and balances and only the Commissioner of Police can request a warrant to intercept communications and in very limited circumstances:-

a) In the interest of national security b) For the purpose of preventing or detecting serious crime c) To avert an imminent threat to human life d) In circumstances coming within the scope of international mutual assistance agreements e) To safeguard the economic wellbeing of the Islands The Governor will only issue such warrant if he is satisfied the interception of the message is proportionate to the ends sought to be achieved by intercepting the message and the information sought to be obtained by other less intrusive means. The warrant will be addressed to the Commissioner, who may authorize an employee of the RCIPS to execute the warrant. The regulations also allow for oral applications and grants when it is impractical to make a written application. The oral warrant can only be issued for 24 hours but the period may be extended by a written warrant issued upon a written application. The Dep. Commissioner then gave his reasons why the phone tapping was necessary saying that technology has changed the way we communicate and now the law enforcement agencies can keep up with these changes by allowing them lawfully to access cell phone conversations and text messages. Mr. Ebanks made it clear that the regulations prohibit any information obtained during an intercept from being disclosed in any legal proceedings. In other words, intelligence obtained can only be used for intelligence purposes. When asked if other countries had similar lawful interception legislation, Mr. Manderson

handed out a document listing three other countries that has comparative legislation. These were Jamaica, UK and Zimbabwe. He also said the British Virgin Islands had similar legislation in place. Mr. Ebanks gave an assurance that the new law had further safeguards enshrined in it. An independent audit committee would review all applications for intercept warrants including those refused. This was to ensure compliance with the regulations. This committee would be appointed by the Governor in Cabinet and will be known as the Interception of Communication Audit Committee (ICAC). It will comprise five persons:

1. A Justice of the Peace, who shall be Chairperson 2. A retired Judge, or Magistrate, or lawyer 3. The Chief Officer in the Portfolio of Internal and external Affairs 4. An information and technology specialist employed by the Cayman islands Government 5. A technical expert (from a law enforcement agency outside the Islands) with experience in the interception of telecommunications. When asked why a member of this committee could not be appointed by the general public through one of the community groups, eg. Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, etc. so as to avoid the stigma of ‘cherry picking’, we were told it was impractical. The biggest bone of contention was the authority being vested with the Governor and not a judge. It was made clear that there would be no changes at this time as the regulations had already been passed. There was no provision for any penalties, eg. fines, imprisonment, etc. on any person or persons for willful misuse of the regulations. The new law was published in the CI Gazette at 9am Monday 15th August.

A new law that was passed at 9:00am, Monday July 15th, allows the Island’s police force to tap into conversations involving anyone, deemed by their standards to be a crime suspect. The RCIPS now has the technical and legal capabilities to “give a listen” to any conversation between phone parties, without notification to phone users. The new move is aimed at improving the investigative capabilities of the police service through access to any information considered relevant to investigation. The following are some of the opinions which members of the general public shared with iNews on the new legislation.

Name: Levan Lewis Age: 26 District: George Town Comments: “I agree with the move, I think we need a reduction in crime, not an increase. At the end of the day, we all want to be safe. I think it has advantages. Crime affects everyone. We need to start looking out for each other, the criminals are not looking out for us.”

The Editor Speaks Where Were You? Colin Wilson colin.wilson@ieyenews.com

Alan Jackson, one of America’s top country music artists wrote a song entitled “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)?” in November 2001. It was written in the wake of the September 11th suicide attacks by alQaeda on the United States. Do you remember exactly what you were doing on that Tuesday morning when the shocking news swept with disbelief across the world? I do and I was working with CITN at the TV Centre in George Town. The morning show, Daybreak, was just finishing when I was urgently called into Master Control. The MC operator showed me the CNN and BBC World feeds where the first of the planes had crashed into one of the twin towers. I gave the instruction to broadcast the CNN feed over Cayman 27 and initially had thought it was an accident never dreaming what horrors were to come. It is indelibly printed on my memory for eternity. When I hear the song today it still brings tears to my eyes as I am a very emotional person, although one doesn’t have to be emotional to feel some form of pain at the memory. My first memory of something grave happening was when I was eight years old and was at school in England. It was 6th February 1952. We were suddenly called into the school hall and the news was broken to us that King George 6th had died. We had just got television (the only second household to get it in the street where we lived) and I also remember our house being packed with people to watch the funeral, all crouched around a 9inch TV screen. Yes 9inches! This was followed up by the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and I only mention this one because it really was special to me. Coronation Day was on my birthday, June 2nd. All of you who were alive at the time can probably remember exactly where you were when you heard the news. The next memorable one was the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on Friday November 22 1963 in Dallas, Texas. I was watching BBC television in the evening at my home in England when they interrupted the programme. What it was I don’t know. An unfamiliar newsreader (all their regular newsreaders were at a party at the Dorchester Hotel, London) gave an announcement that Kennedy had been shot and then it was back to their scheduled programmes. I thought I had misheard the announcement and switched over to ITV but they were showing “Emergency Ward 10”. It was only around 9pm when Ronald Allison, the BBC reporter appeared announcing in a solemn voice that US President John F.

Kennedy had died. The next day, as I travelled up by train to London my fellow passengers were grim faced with shock. Where were you? Another shocking death that I will never forget was on 31st August 1997. I was at the Prospect Playhouse having a drink with cast members (I believe the production was Last Panto in Grand Cayman/Beauty for Sale) when my wife, Joan, called me to say that Princess Diana had been involved in a very bad car accident. On arriving home we sat on the bed listening to the unfolding news that the Princess was in hospital. Then came the awful announcement that she had died. Joan cried out, “No! No! No!” and burst into tears. My last “Where Were You?” and not least was on August 16th 1977 and today is the anniversary. “The King has died” was the announcement. There was no immediate “Long Live the King.” This king was the “King of Rock and Roll” known simply as “the King” – Elvis Presley. I was staying at a hotel in Winchelsea – England’s smallest town, nr. Rye, Sussex where I was working on a building project. I was having a drink at the bar when a man walked in, asked for a pint of beer, and said casually, “Do you all know Elvis Presley has just died?” We didn’t and I remember the shock. Our cooking correspondent, Dody Denman, who is no stranger to these Islands – this is her second home (she actually has a room in her house nr. Houston called the ‘Cayman Room’) has a special recipe she has dedicated to Elvis – pound cake which was his favourite. Give it a try and have an Elvis party tonight. And I bet you can remember where you were when the King died.

Bomb blast kills 60 in Iraq KUT, Iraq (AP) — Bomb blasts ripped through more than a dozen Iraqi cities Monday, killing 60 security forces and civilians in the worst attack this year, one that highlighted al-Qaida’s resolve and ability to wreak havoc. The bloodbath comes less than two weeks after Iraqi officials said they would be open to a small number of U.S. forces staying in the country past a Dec. 31 withdrawal deadline. The blasts were coordinated to go off Monday morning and included parked car bombs, roadside bombs, a suicide bomber driving a vehicle that rammed into a police station and even bombs attached to lightpoles.

The scope of the violence — seven explosions went off in different towns in Diyala province alone — emphasized that insurgents are still able to carry out attacks despite repeated crackdowns by Iraqi and U.S. forces. Iraqis were furious at security officials and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. “Where is the government with all these explosions across the country? Where is al-Maliki? Why doesn’t he come to see?” said Ali Jumaa Ziad, a shopowner in Kut, where the worst of the violence occurred. Ziad was brushing pieces

of human flesh from the floor and off equipment in his shop. Al-Maliki’s spokesman and the military spokesman did not answer telephone calls.

New policies to tackle laziness after riots LONDON (AP) — Britain must confront its “slow-motion moral collapse” Prime Minister David Cameron declared yesterday, following four days of riots that left five people dead, thousands facing criminal charges and at least 200 million pounds ($326 million) in property losses. Cameron said his coalition government would outline new policies designed to tackle a culture of laziness, irresponsibility and selfishness which he believes fueled Britain’s unrest. He also pledged to toughen rhetoric from ministers and officials, who he claimed had too often had shied away from promoting strong moral standards. His government would no longer be

timid in discussing family breakdown or poor parenting, or in criticising those who fail to set a good example to their community. “This has been a wake-up call for our country. Social problems that have been festering for decades have exploded in our face,” Cameron told an audience at a youth centre in Witney, his Parliamentary district in southern England. “Just as people last week wanted criminals robustly confronted on our street, so they want to see these social problems taken on and defeated,” he said. Cameron insisted that racial tensions, poverty and the government’s austerity program — much of which is

yet to bite — were not the motivations for the riots across London and other major cities.

State Fair reopens after tragedy INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana State Fair was reopening yesterday for the first time since a strong gust of wind caused a deadly stage collapse, but was pausing first to honor and remember the five people killed in the accident. Gov. Mitch Daniels and others were set to attend the memorial Monday morning at the state fairgrounds. The fair was to reopen afterward. Wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph toppled the stage where an estimated 12,000 people were waiting to see the band Sugarland on Saturday night. hospitals. Four of the victims died at the scene: Alina Bigjohny, 23, of Fort Wayne; Christina Santiago, 29, of Chicago; Tammy Vandam, 42, of Wanatah; and 49-year-old Glenn Goodrich of Indianapolis. Nathan Byrd, a 51-yearold stagehand from Indianapolis who was atop the rigging when it fell, died overnight. Any suggestion that Miss Kerran Baker, who has now been missing for two weeks, had gambling debts, or that the police has reasons to conduct rapid arrests, was refuted during a police press briefing. In his response Detective Superintendent Marlon Bodden stated: “There is nothing to suggest that she had any gambling debt.” In the press conference yesterday, Marlon Bodden, and Chief Superintendent John Jones, indicated that concerned individuals are airing the view that suspects in the case of the missing woman should be immediately arrested. The Chief Superintendent stated that randomly arresting everyone that is deemed to be a suspect is not consistent with lawful police proceedings. “I want to deflate the statements that the police should just go out there and arrest individuals.

12

“An arrest is a very serious issue. We do not take arrests lightly, and it is a very serious thing. “We can’t go on a fishing trip, this is not the kind of jurisdiction where we can just arrest people left and right and put them in a cell and force some kind of confession. “When we believe we have sufficient evidence we will decide if we need to

arrest someone,” he said. But the public’s cry for answers will not be ignored, assured D.S. Marlon Bodden. In his assessment of the investigation the detective admitted that no more progress has been made in locating the missing woman, but there are still forensics, and other information he believes will prove very valuable to the police. “We will examine more forensic reports. We continue to review the CCTV footage. We will be reviewing every inch of footage. “We will be carrying out our second review to make sure that we haven’t missed anything. This is a thorough enquiry and we are taking it very seriously. “I made an appeal to anyone making contacts with her leading up to her disappearance to come forward. “Unfortunately, there is no answer as yet. We will not relent until we get answers. If you don’t want to speak to the police speak to someone that you can trust. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Brac fire destroys van DIVISION OF QUALITY COMMODITIES LTD. Kathleen Bodden-Harris

Construction & Fine Finish

kathleen.bodden-harris@ieyenews.com

At approximately 10.30am on Saturday morning a large plume of light coloured smoke could be observed from the west side of Cayman Brac. The cloud grew rapidly and darkened to solid black. The blinding choking cloud crossed the road and billowed over the bluff by southerly winds. It was first feared the dump had caught on fire, however, the source was found at 1276 South Side Road. A gentleman working on maintenance at the unoccupied house was feverishly battling a losing war against the generator he had been using to complete his tasks. The generator for reasons unknown caught alight spreading across the surrounding grounds. Without electricity at the residence, running water to douse the growing flames was unattainable from the cistern and the thick layer of leaf litter and sappy Casurina pines

iWeather

quickly fed and intensified the fire. The workman’s van was soon engulfed and it was feared that stored gasoline would cause an explosion. A group of visitors to the Brac from a neighbouring house ran to the scene investigating the source of the ominous cloud. One promptly assessed the need for professional assistance and called the local fire department. The full regalia of Emergency Response Teams including, Medical, Fire and Police were quickly dispatched to the site of the fire. Chief Inspector Forte of the Royal

Cayman Islands Police took control of the gathering crowd of onlookers to cordon off the area. In the aftermath, the workman’s van was completely burnt out; however no large scale structural damage resulting from the fire to the residence was visible. Though visibly shaken and exhausted the maintenance man was uninjured and no other injuries resulted from the fire. Emergency workers continued working the scene in the fierce afternoon heat for over four hours.

Storm Brewing

Satellite imagery showed some deep convection which could mean a tropical storm heading to the Caribbean. Although the severity of the weather is not thought to be high it is understood to be on course to hit Cayman. Warmer ocean water temperatures and dry air mean, according to weather experts, the reasons for the marked increase. A view of the water vapor satellite loops shows that there is a lot of dry air surrounding this disturbance and any development that does occur will be slow to happen.

The NAM model then forecasts that this disturbance will develop into a tropical cyclone as we get into Wednesday and for it to strengthen into a moderate tropical storm on Thursday with it beginning to impact Jamaica during Thursday afternoon. The NOGAPS model forecasts it will develop into a tropical cyclone once it reaches the west-central Caribbean just south of Jamaica on Thursday and then forecasts it to impact Central America and Belize as a fairly weak tropical storm this

coming weekend. Experts say that although it will become a tropical depression over at least the next couple of days, however, it will bring strong gusty winds, choppy seas and heavy rainfall across Barbados, the Windward Islands and the southern Leeward Islands from today through Tuesday. As it stands right now, it is not a immediate concern and there is the possibility that it may never develop. With that said, this disturbance will be watched closely this week projected path of storm

Dishin’ with Dody Memories of Elvis Dody Denman dody.denman@ieyenews.com

Tuesday, August 16th is the 34th anniversary of the death of the King of Rock and Roll. Known simply, as Elvis, but then again there was really nothing simple about the legendary Elvis Aaron Presley. Elvis has always played an important part in my life. I have loved him from my childhood and love him today. Sometimes I just need an Elvis fix and listen to his music for hours. Elvis cut through the blurred lines of class, age and race to be loved throughout the world. As a child my grandmother and mother loved him, which made it convenient for me. Not so for my dad. While on a family holiday, we drove through Memphis, Tennessee. I could see the roof of Graceland, and my father went out of the way to keep from driving by the iconic home. Not certain I ever forgave him! The décor of my bedroom was early Elvis. I had three movie billboards on three walls. These were not the small posters of today, but huge 6’x6’ coverings that came in 6 pieces. The remaining walls were plastered with record jackets and photographs. After loving Elvis for so long, I

finally saw him in person at the Astrodome in Houston, Texas. I was now a mother and my mother graciously kept my baby so I could attend the concert with my husband. From the moment he walked onto the stage, I barely breathed. This was before the days of large screens, so I sat with my elbows on my knees looking through binoculars. Tears streamed down my face until the immortal, “Elvis has left the building” was loudly declared. I stood up, never saying a word, walked to a pay phone and called my mother. I began crying again and her response was, “I’m so glad. I was afraid you would be disappointed.” I was not. The day Elvis died, I began receiving phone calls from my friends and family. I spent two days, lying in the floor of my home, listening to the condolences and stories, playing his music with broken heart and streaming tears. I loved Elvis and everyone who knew me was concerned. I grieve still that there is no new music; that there will never be another anything from Elvis. Several years later, I visited Graceland with my high school friend, Pam. It was surreal. We were almost

thrown off his private jet, the Lisa Marie, for fondling his bed and robe. On our knees, at opposite sides of the bed, we were shoulder deep in sheets and mattress. It was worth it, how many people do you know that can say they touched what touched Elvis? I was the instigator of the Hard Rock Café in Houston creating an annual Elvis birthday party. Filled with impersonators and a special menu of his favourite foods, it was always a memorable celebration. Much has been written about Elvis’ tastes, but the fact remains, he was a southerner at heart. He preferred good old southern soul food such as dumplings, peas, greens, cornbread, fried okra and banana pudding. Everyone knows he enjoyed peanut butter and banana sandwiches fried in butter. He also favoured pound cake. Here is my recipe. I know he would have liked it.

Reminders for Roaming Claire O’Dea

Here are a few things worth considering before going on your next journey: • Before travelling, check with your provider that your account is provisioned for roaming. • Providers have roaming partner arrangements specific to different countries so you can always ask your network what the preferred choice of roaming networks are for the countries you are visiting.

Register online early to avoid long lines. Classes fill up quickly. 168 Olympic Way, GT

623-UCCI (8224)

www.ucci.edu.ky

• Some network providers offer special roaming add-ons for example Digicel’s BlackBerry Data Passport. Rather than charging per MB of data used, this flat monthly fee covers up to 100MB of BlackBerry data when roaming to avoid incurring large data costs when abroad. ®

Criollo

Summer Sale!

• Call minutes and texts that are included in your monthly package are not applicable when roaming. • Incoming calls to your cell phone are not free! You can check with your service provider the cost of receiving a call when abroad. • Be conscious of the fact that you get charged for voicemails left on your phone as they are considered incoming calls even if you don’t check them once received. Another option is to disable your voicemail.

Buy Criollo Reserva Chardonnay, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec Rosé at 50% off!

• When travelling, it may be necessary to do a manual network search to recognize the new network especially if you are visiting multiple destinations.

Regular Price: $14 per bottle now only $7!

• Wi-Fi hotspots increase data transfer speed and decrease data roaming costs so where possible (being wary of low security on public networks) you can connect to free or low-cost hotspots for your data and internet needs.

Musicians’ Showcase helps wildlife at Camana Bay Christopher Tobutt christopher.tobutt@ieyenews.com

Local musicians Natasha Kozaily, The E-Z Street Band, Sea ‘N’ B and photographer Aston Ebanks helped raise money for Cayman Wildlife Rescue (CWR) at the Musicians’ Showcase at Camana Bay. The Musicians’ Showcase is a once-a-month event organised by Oneworld Entertainment, Camana Bay, and Abacus restaurant which aims to raise the profile of local artists and musicians while raising money for local charities too. Oneworld’s owner, Eden Hurlston who also plays percussion in the 2-piece E-Z Street Band said, “On the second Saturday of each month, we work on a different community organisation. We started in December last year raising funds for the Human rights Commission. In January we held ‘Blues for the Blues’ - an evening of music from local blues bands for the Blue Iguana Recovery Programme and Botanic Park. In February we did Love Yourself to Health which benefitted the Cancer Society and Diabetes and Diabetes Association. In March we did “Honouring Women’s Month, for the Family Resource Centre and featured all-women artists, June’s event went to support the Red Cross, and last month was for Cayman AIDS Foundation.” CWR’s Lois Blumenthal explained how the money was raised: “We sold our own CWR product - the “Adoption” kits - which consist of a plushy toy Cayman Parrot or Cayman Bat along with a Certificate of Appreciation, a tote-bag and a

and rehabilitates sick, injured and orphaned wildlife for release back into the wild. The evening began with musician and songwriter Natasha Kozaily, who sang her own songs from her new EP, A Tail of One Fish, accompanying herself on the keyboard. Next came the mellow Caribbean soft-rock style of the E-Z Street Band, with Glen Scott on acoustic guitar and Eden Hurlston on congas. Sea N’ B, with Chuck and Barrie Quappe on guitar and congas, were joined by Roger “Bugs” Wilson on bass. Together, they served up their unique musical cocktail of calypso, jazz, rock, and reggae, while Aston Ebanks displayed his black-andwhite photos for sale - with their theme of travel and locomotion.

“Cod-fish balls for breakfast”

Part 24 Still, when there were no more Indians to come to this island school, it was of necessity closed, no matter which side was right. There were still numbers of Chippewas living on the other islands and on the mainland; but they belonged to the Roman Catholic faith, and were under the control of Père Michaux. The Protestant church—a square New England meeting-house, with steeple and bell— was kept open during another year; but the congregation grew so small that at last knowledge of the true state of affairs reached the New England purses, and it was decided that the minister in charge should close this mission, and go southward to a more promising field among the prairie settlers of Illinois. All the teachers connected with the Indian school had departed before this— all save Miss Lois and her aunt; for Priscilla Hinsdale, stricken down by her own intense energy, which had consumed her as an inward fire, was now confined to her bed, partially paralyzed. The New England woman had sold her farm, and put almost all her little store of money into island property. “I shall live and die here,” she had said; “I have found my life-work.” But her work went away from her; her class of promising squaws departed with their pappooses and their braves, and left her scholar less. “With all the blessed religious privileges they have here, besides other advantages, I cannot at all understand it—I can not understand it,” she repeated many times, especially to Sandy Forbes, an old Scotchman and fervent singer of psalms. “Aweel, aweel, Miss Priscilla, I donnot suppose ye can,” replied Sandy, with a momentary twinkle in his old eyes. While still hesitating over her future course, illness struck down the old maid, and her life-work was at last decided for her: it was merely to lie in bed, motionless, to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

winter and summer, with folded hands and whatever resignation she was able to muster. Niece Lois, hitherto a satellite, now assumed the leadership. This would seem a simple enough charge, the household of two women, poor in purse, in a remote village on a Northern frontier. But exotics of any kind require nursing and vigilance, and the Hinsdale household was an exotic. Miss Priscilla required that every collar should be starched in the New England fashion, that every curtain should fall in New England folds, that every dish on the table should be of New England origin, and that every clock should tick with New England accuracy. Lois had known no other training; and remembering as she did also the ways of the old home among the New Hampshire hills with a child’s fidelity and affection, she went even beyond her aunt in faithfulness to her ideal; and although the elder woman had long been dead, the niece never varied the habits or altered the rules of the house which was now hers alone. “A little New England homestead strangely set up here on this far Western island,” William Douglas had said. The church house, as the villagers named it, was built by the

Presbyterian missionaries, many of them laboring with their own hands at the good work, seeing, no doubt, files of Indian converts rising up in another world to call them blessed. When it came into the hands of Miss Priscilla, it came, therefore, ready-made as to New England ideas of rooms and closets, and only required a new application of white and green paint to become for her an appropriate and rectangular bower. It stood near the closed meeting- house, whose steeple threw a slow-moving shadow across its garden, like a great sun- dial, all day. Miss Lois had charge of the key of the meetinghouse, and often she unlocked its door, went in, and walked up and down the aisle, as if to revive the memories of the past. She remembered the faith and sure hope that used to fill the empty spaces, and shook her head and sighed. Then she upbraided herself for sighing, and sang in her thin husky voice softly a verse or two of one of their old psalms by way of reparation. She sent an annual report of the condition of the building to the Presbyterian Board of Missions, but in it said nothing of the small repairs for which her own purse paid. Was it a silent way of making amends to the old walls for having deserted their tenets? “Cod-fish balls for breakfast on Sunday morning, of course,” said Miss Lois, “and fried hasty-pudding. On Wednesdays a boiled dinner. Pies on Tuesdays and Saturdays.” The pins stood in straight rows on her pincushion; three times each week every room in the house was swept, and the floors as well as the furniture dusted. Beans were baked in an earthen pot on Saturday night, and sweet-cake was made on Thursday. Rast Pronando often dropped in to tea on Thursday. Winter or summer, through scarcity or plenty, Miss Lois never varied her established routine, thereby setting an example, she said, to the idle and shiftless.

Try our New Ocean front location in WEST BAY

Koozies Keep your drink at the right temperature Georgina Wilcox georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com

Do you know what koozies are? The name is interesting, the thing is interesting and the use is interesting. Koozies is not only an interesting name itself but has some more interesting synonyms like kuzzie, kuzzies, coozie and coozies or kozy . They all sound similar though. I haven’t been able to figure out whether koozies are an innovative idea or a bi-product of foam. They arrived into existence in the year 1982 and have acquired a massive amount of publicity ever since. The online dictionary that everyone seems to use now, Wikipedia, defines Koozies as “a fabric or foam device that is designed to keep a beverage can or bottle cold.” The insulation helps keep the cold beverage from warming due to body heat or ambient temperature. Koozies also prevent condensation from forming. Today, koozies are usually made of polyester, open cell foam, plastic and neoprene, but other materials such as leather and cloth can be used. Whilst the insulator does keep the beverage cold it also delivers warmth toy your hands. Koozies can be used on most standard size cans and stubby bottles, but they are most often used on beer cans and stubby beer bottles. People that love beer really love their beer, so having a koozie is very important and having a cool custom koozie is even better. Customized koozies have become very popular gifts, party favours, wedding favours, and promotional items. Koozies are cheap to produce, so having a custom koozie made can be very inexpensive. Let’s consider some various koozie to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

designs you may want to use as gifts or promotional items. If you are going to be throwing a party and would like to have some custom koozies made as party favors, you can have the koozie design relate to the theme of the party. For example, let’s assume you are hosting a Halloween party and you have your costume in advance. You can have a custom koozie made with you in your costume printed on it. Your friends will always remember that party whenever they use the koozie to keep their beer cold. In the picture you use for the koozie, you may want to be holding a beer in a koozie or be doing something otherwise humorous. If you are involved in the planning of a wedding, you can have custom koozies made as wedding favors that help people remember that special

day. If the wedding cake is made in advance, you can have a picture of the wedding cake printed onto koozies. Guests will think it is very unique and creative to have the actual wedding cake on the koozie that are using at the reception. If you cannot get a picture of the wedding cake in time, you can use a picture of the couple, or maybe a humorous picture of their parents mock fighting. If you have a friend of family member that loves beer, you may want to make them a custom koozie that says “keep your hands off” or “property of ______” and have their name printed on it. You can even include a picture of them on the koozie so that everyone who sees it knows exactly who the beer belongs to. If you know someone that has a strong dislike for the taste of beer, you can play a joke on them by having a koozie made that makes the can appear to be something else. You can have a generic term like “Grape Soda” printed on the koozie with some grape-related artwork to make the can appear like it has grape soda in it. Of course the cozy should be of a tall design to help mask the can. Offer them some grape soda and watch their reaction. If you don’t mind doing a little scissor work yourself, you can make a very unique koozie by having a picture or design printed on it, and then cutting the top of the koozie to shape. For example, you can take a picture of a picket fence and have it printed on a koozie, and then cut along the top of the fence in the picture and produce a koozie with a unique shape. Koozies are now used for holding espresso coffee/ chocolate mugs so you can avoid getting your fingers and hands burnt. Look out for iNews on your next new koozie.

Cesc completes Barca switch BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Cesc Fabregas’ transfer to Barcelona is complete after the Spain midfielder signed a five-year contract Monday. Barcelona said it paid $42 million to Arsenal, and incentives could increase the figure to $56 million. Fabregas himself will pay the Gunners $1.4 million out of his salary for each season of the deal, and the Spanish champions will pay up to $7 million more depending on trophies won. The Spanish club said Fabregas passed a physical and then an “exhaustive” fitness test with club doctors before signing his new deal that brings the 24-year-old back to his boyhood club after eight seasons with Arsenal. “It took a lot of years, months, days to get here ... it’s nice to be home after eight years,” Fabregas said in Catalan during his presentation to fans at the Camp Nou stadium, where he continuously kissed the Barcelona crest. “This is the most difficult challenge of my life.”

Fabregas is expected to train with his new teammates later Monday, when he would get his first taste of where exactly he will fit into Barcelona’s talented squad, which already includes Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta and Alexis Sanchez. Fabregas, who returns to the club that nurtured him before he joined Arsenal in 2003, came onto the

field wearing the No. 4 jersey before dribbling the ball and saluting fans, continuously patting the Barcelona crest between kisses and looking overwhelmed by the long-awaited return. Many fans carried signs reading “Cesc welcome home” as they watched him don the navy and crimson jersey as a Barcelona player for the first time since 2003.

United start title defence with a win LONDON (AP) — Manchester United opened its Premier League title defense with a 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, and Andre Villas-Boas’ first game in charge of Chelsea ended in a scoreless draw at Stoke. United, beginning its bid for a 20th English title, won when Ashley Young’s cross was deflected into the net by West Brom defender Steven Reid in the 81st minute. Wayne Rooney put United ahead 1-0 in the 13th minute, and West Brom evened the score in the 37th when Shane Long’s angled shot went under David de Gea, renewing questions about the new 20-yearold Spanish goalkeeper. “It was just a bit of concentration there, but welcome to English football,” United manager Alex Ferguson said. Star United defender Rio Ferdinand hurt his hamstring and will be out six weeks.

Ninth tournament win for Novak Writen by : Victoria Anderson

APPLY SUNSCREEN PROPERLY.

The end of the school year is here and savvy moms and dads by now have made all the arrangements for summer. Summer camps and leisurely days at the pool or beach are just a few of the summer rituals for many families. However if you're tempted to let your child play outdoors for even a few minutes without proper sun protection, you might want to think twice. Adolescence and childhood are critical periods during which exposure to UV radiation is more likely to contribute to skin cancer in later life. Children with fair skin, blond or red hair and blue or green eyes are at the highest risk of sunburn. But darker-skinned children also need sun protection. With this in mind, it’s important that parents teach their children how to enjoy fun in the sun safely.

LIMIT OUTDOOR PLAYTIME BETWEEN 10A.M. AND 4P.M.

Apply a thick, even coat to all exposed areas 20 - 30 minutes before your child goes out in the sun. Choose a sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher. Make sure it's labeled "broad spectrum," which means it blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight. For your little ones, sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide should be selected as these compounds are less irritating than others. Sunscreen sticks are best for the face because they are sweat proof and less likely to drip. Don't forget nose, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck; lips can also burn, so apply a lip balm with SPF protection. Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours, or after sweating or swimming.

Some medications increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, so make sure to ask your doctor whether your child may be at risk. Prescription antibiotics and acne medications are the most notorious culprits, but when in doubt, ask.

Wearing protective clothing and hats is one of the primary ways of warding off UV damage. When wet, light coloured clothing transmits just as much sunlight as bare skin. Keep your kids covered with dark colours, long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. And don't forget the accessories: sunglasses with UV protection to guard against burned corneas, and hats to prevent sunburned scalps and faces. Protective clothing, hats with wide brims, and sunglasses are just as important for babies. At the beach, bring along a large umbrella.

Parents, you are the best teacher by practicing sun safety yourself. If your child sees you following sun safety rules, he'll take them for granted and follow suit. Teach every member of the family how to protect their skin and eyes. With proper supervision, children can learn to protect themselves and enjoy summer fun without sacrificing the health of their skin.

MONTREAL (AP) — Topranked Novak Djokovic won the Rogers Cup on for his ninth tournament victory of the year and record fifth in a season in an ATP Masters 1,000 event, beating Mardy Fish 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

COVER FROM HEAD TO TOE.

Avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun's rays are at their strongest. Even on cloudy or cooler days, ultraviolet (UV) rays remain strong. Shady spots can be just as tricky because of reflected light. If your child is playing outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply ample sunscreen.

WATCH OUT FOR MEDICATIONS.

iSports

The 24-year-old Serb, the Australian Open and Wimbledon champion, is 29-0 this year on hard courts and 53-1 overall. He also won the Rogers Cup in 2007. “I am human — I can definitely assure you of that,” Djokovic said. “I guess it’s just all about having a positive attitude on the court every day, waking up every day wanting to improve, wanting to win, being determined, being professional. It’s that desire and motivation that keeps me going. Every match I play, I try to win, regardless which match is it or whoever is across the net.” The sixth-seeded Fish was the only player to win a set a set against Djokovic this week. Fish has lost all seven career meetings with Djokovic, but gave the top seed a battle with his awkward mix of baseline and attacking play. “It was a close match, for sure,” Djokovic said. “A couple of points, one good return game in the third set, decided the winner. But it’s a final. I knew that he is not going to give me the match and the win. I knew that I have to fight for it.”

Now the Chicago Cubs are streaking. The Cubs stopped Uggla’s 33-game hitting streak and rallied from a four-run deficit to beat the Atlanta Braves 6-5 on Sunday for their fourth straight series win. The Cubs have won 11 of 14. Uggla’s streak was the longest in the majors in five years. He was 0-for-3 with an RBI. “That’s more games than I thought I would ever have,” Uggla said. His best chance to extend the streak came in the fifth. Second baseman Darwin Barney made a diving catch of Uggla’s fly ball in shallow right field. Barney was fully extended when he made the catch in front of right fielder Tyler Colvin. “I wasn’t even looking at him,” said Uggla of Barney. “I was looking at Colvin and I was like ‘Oh, it’s going to drop in front of him.’ And the next thing you know Barney comes flying through.” Barney said the catch was more important because of Uggla’s streak. “Because of the circumstances and all that, I’m pretty happy about it,” Barney said. “It was a good streak for him. He’s a great player. But I think our pitchers are happy. They take a lot of pride in that, and I’m happy for them.”

The snakebitten Ambrose, deprived more than once of a NASCAR victory, beat Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch on a two-lap dash to the checkered flag Monday to win the rain-delayed Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International.

It was his first victory in 105 starts in NASCAR’s top series and atoned for a slip-up a year ago on the road course at Sonoma, when he stalled his car under caution while leading with six laps to go and finished sixth. “I’ve tried for 2½ years,” Ambrose said. “We’re going to onward and upward from here. It’s a proud day.” Ambrose has won all three Nationwide races he’s entered at Watkins Glen, and in three Cup starts here, he’s notched one second and two thirds, including an impressive drive from last to third in 2008. Finally pulling into Victory Lane was a feeling like no other. “This is almost surreal,” the affable Australian said in his No. 9 Ford for Richard Petty Motorsports after crossing the finish line. Ambrose signed a multiyear deal with struggling RPM a year ago to drive the No. 9 this season. info@ieyenews.com

Esso Cubs provided a fitting end to a record breaking Cayman Islands local cricket season with an emphatic display capturing the Division 2 T/20 title. Paramount won the toss and decided to bat getting off to a good start with Lawrence McIntoch 46 and Leon Watson 11 but no one else were able to handle the spin of the Esso Cubs. Tony Higgens, Sacha De Alwis, Ricardo Roach and Wayne Cato were amongst the wickets bowling out Paramount for a small total of 79 runs. It was easy pickings for the Esso

Cubs as Dave Holness, Ricardo Roach and Darren Cato made short work of the evening exercise winning by 8 wickets. Aims Consultants won the playoff for 3rd place defeating Chillies by 21 runs. After limiting Aims Consultants to 111 runs Chillies led by Rocky made a gallant effort for success. With 12 balls remaining and 27 runs required Rocky was unfortunately run out and Chillies folded. It was a season of many outstanding performances but none more so than the brilliance of Ladel Farquharson.

Playing in both divisions Ladel struck 40 fours and a mind blowing 81 sixes. The association wishes to record its thanks to the Ministry of Sports, Dept. of Sports, CICUA, Media, grounds men, players and supporters. Look out for plenty more cricket activities in the coming months! Island Heritage Stingrays won the Women’s League while Greenies picked up the T/20 prize. Division One, and the Division One T/20 were both picked up by Prison while Greenies secured the Division 2 League.
