Astronomical telescope lands at UCCI

A state-of-the-art astronomical telescope which has been lovingly built

by Dr. William Hrudey in his West Bay garage, finally landed at its new home, a-purpose built observatory on the University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) campus.

The telescope, built round a 12.5 inch concave reflecting mirror and reckoned to be the third largest in the Caribbean region was lowered by crane to upper floor room of the observatory.

which guides the precision gears and other high-tech equipment, the telescope will enable students to gaze out on planets or constellations of stars many thousands of light-years away.

It was built over a four-year period

by Dr. Hrudey after the first one was destroyed by seawater during hurricane Ivan.

His patience in not only completing the telescope but in finding a suitable home where it would be fully appreciated, was rewarded when Dr. Hrudey, a lifetime astronomy enthusiast, was introduced to UCCI President, Mr Roy Bodden.

Mr. Bodden offered Dr. Hrudey the campus site for the new telescope. The observatory building has been made possible by a number of sponsors, including the Dart Foundation,

GreenlightRE, and the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman as well several different construction-related business who have donated labour and expertise.

The building is divided into two parts, the room that contains the telescope and a classroom where students can watch what the telescope sees on a huge LCD screen.

“The observatory building is complete, and now its time to install the telescope,” Dr Hrudey said. “Mr. Bodden is very keen on expanding the curriculum.”

The university plans on using the telescope as a focal-point for brand new courses, and UCCI students as well as students from local schools will soon be able to see the telescope in operation, after the observatory’s grand opening on 21 February.

Weekend robberies Armed robbers at the weekend focused on individuals, assaulting a George Town man outside his home and stealing a cash-filled sack, while breaking into a house in West Bay and taking a wallet and two cellphones.

Both attacks occurred on Sunday, the first about 2am in Palm Dale, outside the male victim’s home, where, he told police, two masked men with a handgun and a knife approached him, taking a bag with an undisclosed sum of cash.

The second incident came at approximately 7pm, when, the male victim reported, a man brandishing “what appeared to be a firearm” entered his Capt Curry Road home, taking his wallet and the telephones.

In both cases, police reported, the assailants did not fire shots and no injuries resulted. Both sets of thieves fled on foot.

The Palm Dale victim was unable to describe his attackers, while the Capt Curry householder said the suspect was of slim built and between 5’10” and 6ft tall, wearing a black mask, a long-sleeved black shirt and black trousers.

The twin incidents come after a similar 28 December episode in which two armed men, wearing black masks, robbed staff at Town Hall Road’s Alfresco Restaurant of an unspecified sum of cash, firing no shots and fleeing on foot.

Police continue to investigate.

Japan police nab inmate TOKYO (AP) — A manhunt that riveted Japan ended Friday when police captured a Chinese convict who bolted from a Hiroshima penitentiary clad only in his underwear in the country’s first prison break in more than two decades.

Police found Li Guolin, who was serving a 23-year sentence for attempted murder, near an elementary school in the southern Japan city on Friday.

Hiroshima police confirmed his arrest, but had no further comment.

Officials said it was the first prison break from a Japanese penitentiary since 1989..

“We are supposed to meet with [Mr Scotland] this week and I’m ready to go,” he said.

Mr Scotland said he and Whittaker had spoken last week and would sit down in the next few days to look at possible venues and discuss what the fighter needed.

“We haven’t met yet, but will meet this week,” Mr Scotland said. “We want to see how big a role we can play. If anything, we would facilitate it because Charles is quite adept at staging the match.

“He’ll have to speak to us if he wants to use a government venue, but this is what we want to do. It’s what we’ve been doing,” he said, to aid local boxers, “putting in the gym and supporting Kendall, who has great promise.”

Bundrage, known as “K9”, has been the IBF junior middleweight champion since his August 2010 fiveround victory against Cory Spinks, son of former heavyweight champion Leon Spinks and nephew of former light heavyweight champion and heavyweight king Michael Spinks.

The boxer, 38, has complained, however, of being largely sidelined since, fighting only a single match in St Louis against contender Sechew Powell.

Promoter Don King recently promised to rectify the situation, however, naming Whittaker as Bundrage’s opponent-after-next.

“I think Cornelius is just a wonderful guy. He’s going to be fighting on March 17th and then I want to put him in with the guy from the Cayman Islands, Charles Whittaker, and then I want to put him in his mandatory -- the winner of January 28th when Cory Spinks and Sechew Powell fight for the elimination for the number one spot,” King recently told Max Boxing.com.

“I’ll beat him,” Whittaker said yesterday, “He and King are frustrated. I may put on something in March. It won’t be a world title for me, but he’ll be defending his title and it’ll put me in the same frame with him.

“I know Bundrage. We were talking to him before and I like him, He’s a Christian. He’s a good guy and I hope to see him. I’ll root for him in March,” he said, but in the ring, he vowed to triumph.

“It’s exciting, but I have to stay sharp,” Whittaker said, describing ”light sparring” recently in the Philippines and elsewhere.

“I’m off to Florida next week to take care of some business, but as soon as I’m back, I’ll go into training camp.

It’ll be in about a week, and no later than 1 February.”

Mr Scotland said only that the fight was likely to be at “an open-air place for seating”, listing Truman Bodden Stadium, Camana Bay -- “where they had the Jazz Fest” -- and Pageant Beach among the possibilities.

“You’d have to build a ring and then get a cover on it,” he said, acknowledging the potential for international exposure: “You make your returns”, he said, on the TV rights, not so much on ticket sales.”

According to Shomari Scott of the Department of Tourism, organisers of the All Things Cayman area, the competition aims at showcasing Cayman’s culture and highlighting local crafts while also bringing our

The competition will be judged during the festival on January 28 by four judges and samples of each participants cake will also be available for onlookers to sample and decide for themselves who they think should be the winners.

Letters to the editor For the past few years I have kept silent and my fingers away from my keyboard when thinking about road safety issues. I reached a firm decision on this as I was banging my head against a solid wall and voicing my thoughts in the media too often for comfort.

I regret to advise you that I have had to do an about turn.

About eight or ten years ago the C.I. Road Safety Council highlighted the danger of road signage causing distractions to drivers on our roads. No one took any notice For the last couple of years

we have seen trucks belonging to broadcast stations parked on the side of the road when there is an outside broadcast being aired. These trucks have flashing lights and are sufficient danger to cause concern.

In the last couple of months we now see large electronic displays drawing drivers eyes off the road with an advertisement for beers, bars or even telling drivers to use headphones. (Using headphones whilst driving is in fact unlawful in Cayman, up until today that is).

Cayman Cookout was a chance for foodies from all over the world to converge on Cayman in droves, for a high-class taste of posh nosh heaven.

There were demonstrations of cooking the most wonderful food imaginable from internationally renowned top chefs, in front of a salivating audience, who waited patiently for a chance to sample the delicious foods they had seen being prepared.

There were also plenty of wine events, for those with a nose for a fruity nutty or oaky bouquet, complete with plenty of glass twirling and taste

bud-tweaking-before-tasting, for those who really needed to know if they were delicate, powerful, heady or fresh.

Internationally renowned chef Eric Ripert, just one of the many chefs, owner of the region’s only AAA Five Diamond Award hosted many of the Cookout events, for which food enthusiasts were often willing to pay hundreds of dollars each.

There were several sections that dealt with making sweets even sweeter, not only to taste but to behold: as with all the cookout offerings, colour, appearance and presentation of food were considered as important as taste.

Apart from the Ritz-Carlton hotel, where many of the events took place, Camana Bay played host to “The Ultimate Dinner Party,” where food and wine enthusiasts each paid more than $300 to enjoy the ultimate Cayman Cookout dinner party.

The Bon Vivant Sunday Champagne Brunch and Cook-Off featured not only the best brunch cuisine imaginable, but a competition between several top chefs, judged by a panel of judges including His Excellency, Governor Duncan Taylor.

Beyonce gets fly with golden booty named after her CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — A newly discovered horse fly in Australia was so “bootylicious” with its golden-haired bum, there was only one name worthy of its beauty: Beyonce.

Previously published results from Bryan Lessard, a 24-year-old researcher at Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, were recently announced on the species that had been sitting in a fly collection since it was captured in 1981 — the same year pop diva Beyonce was born.

He says he wanted to pay respect to the insect’s beauty by naming it Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae.

Lessard said Beyonce would be “in the nature history books forever” and that the fly now bearing her name is “pretty bootylicious” with its golden backside.

“Bootylicious” was the title of a song

by Beyonce’s previous group, Destiny’s Child. It’s unknown if the rare species is a bloodsucker like many female horse flies. Lessard says he was unable to find any live specimens when he went looking in 2010 in northeast Queensland’s Atherton Tablelands, where it was captured three decades ago. However, at least one member of the public has alerted him that he was

recently bitten by what’s locally called the “gold bum fly.”

The description of the fly was earlier published in the Australian Journal of Entomology, but the results were announced last week.

FBI seeks help finding Montana teacher’s body Authorities investigating the reported death of a Montana school teacher asked land owners in parts of Montana and North Dakota to check vacant farmsteads for signs of disturbed soil or matted grass, saying her body might be buried at such a site.

As new details about 43-yearold Sherry Arnold’s mysterious disappearance emerged Sunday, law officers released the names of two men being held in the case.

Lester Vann Waters Jr., 47, and Michael Keith Spell, 22, both of Parachute, Colo., were in the Williams County Correctional Center in Williston, N.D., awaiting extradition to Montana, authorities said.

The FBI issued a statement late Sunday saying the body of the Sidney, Mont., woman might be buried in a “shelter belt,” or a line of trees that protects soil from the wind.

The agency asked that property owners in three North Dakota counties — Williams, McKenzie and Mountrail — and in extreme northeastern Montana check vacant farmsteads for signs of disturbed soil or matted grass.

Landowners who discover something unusual should not disturb the area, but call authorities, the FBI said.

“Based on investigative evidence gathered over the last few days, it is believed that Ms. Arnold may be deceased,” FBI spokeswoman Debbie

Philippine chief justice impeachment trial starts MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippines’ first impeachment trial of a Supreme Court justice opened Monday, in a major battle of President Benigno Aquino III’s anti-corruption campaign targeting his detained predecessor and her allies.

Chief Justice Renato Corona was impeached by the House of Representatives last month on corruption allegations as well as accusations that he tried to block prosecution of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who has been detained on vote-rigging charges.

The Editor Speaks Cayman Finance rebuttal

We received a copy of a statement colin.wilson@ieyenews.com from Cayman Finance dated 13th January (headed Cayman Finance refutes conference snub) sent via Tower Marketing their media contact in response to my editorial last Friday (13). My editorial centred on David Marchant, the owner of Offshore Alert, who asserts that Cayman Finance were invited to speak and make agenda suggestions back in July 2011 at their 2012 10th Annual OffshoreAlert conference in Miami, Florida commencing on April 29th. Mr. Marchant claims that Cayman Finance never received an acknowledgement nor reply to his request. My editorial’s thrust was the rudeness in the no response and Cayman Finance had missed a perfect opportunity where they could have showcased the many positive attributes the Cayman Islands has in its offshore business. The statement we received is two thirds ‘gobbledygook’ stating the mission of Cayman Finance (you can read this on their website) and they are a confirmed sponsor of the 2012 Caribbean Regional Compliance Association Conference. “The organisation also intends to undertake major sponsorship this year at the STEP Caribbean conference and will again exhibit at the annual IMAC conference. Locally, the organisation exhibited at Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce Business Expo last October, and is a major supporter of the Chamber’s Career Expo in February.”

Very nice and noteworthy but nothing to do with my editorial. However, there are three paragraphs of note and as requested by M/s Lynne Byles of Tower Marketing I set them out below as written: “Cayman Finance has rejected suggestions that it failed to respond to an invitation to participate in the 2012 Offshore Alert annual conference.

“Mr Richard Coles, Chairman of Cayman Finance, said that neither he or either of the organisation’s two communications companies - both who are clearly listed on the Cayman Finance website - were ever contacted in relation to participating in the 2012 conference.

“It is disappointing to read such statements as Cayman Finance regularly participates in both local and international finance conferences and events,” he said. “In addition, we were never contacted by [mention of another media house] prior to this claim being published which would have resulted in a more balanced article.”

At the end of the statement Mr. Coles says each request for sponsorship and related marketing activities (and they get a lot of such requests) are “carefully assessed to determine if it meets our sponsorship, marketing and community objectives, and obviously budgetary constraints also limit the number of opportunities that we can undertake.”

This again is another piece of standard phraseology that has nothing to do with my editorial. Mr. Coles then says, “If Offshore Alert were to contact us regarding sponsorship, the opportunity would be evaluated on its own merit and would be given serious consideration.”

I didn’t think OffshoreAlert was asking for sponsorship?

Or have I missed something here?

The last paragraphs of the statement are again placed as written: “Cayman Finance has in the past participated in the Offshore Alert conference having had representatives attend, speak on panels, been a paid sponsor and assisted by promoting the event to its members.

“We were involved in the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th annual conferences so to say we are, or have, snubbed the event is just untrue,” Mr. Coles said.

I am awaiting OffshoreAlert’s response and I have asked M/s Byles if she can confirm OffshoreAlert has never contacted them in any capacity regarding their conference and if they have, had they responded. I also asked if they will be sending anyone to the conference.

I am puzzled as to why Offshore Alert would invite someone from the Cayman Islands Judiciary (Judge Charles Quinn is attending) and not even contact Cayman Finance. I will keep you informed to any answers I receive as the mystery deepens.

Discounts are excellent and there are a variety of ways that consumers can obtain a discount on many different items. Many retailers both online and offline offer discounts to their customers on regular basis and they

can range in percentage.

Other types of discounts are like senior citizens discounts. These are specifically for those over a certain age or hold veteran status. This typically applies to hotels, car rentals, or other businesses that you may encounter during travel.

As we age, and it happens to all of us, our muscles become slack and the elasticity in our skin progressively lessens. The exposure to the sun and the stresses of daily life together with gravity is seen upon our faces. The folds and smile lines deepen, the corners of the mouth droop, the jaw line sags and the skin of the neck becomes slack.

The there are our eyes. Eyebrows droop; the skin of the eyelids gathers in loose folds, fine wrinkles develop around the lips and at the corners of the eye including lines of expression. Substantial weight loss can also produce changes in facial appearances too.

Depressing isn’t it? What can you do about it? Have you considered a facelift?

There are many short-lived lifts, most of which are not even lifts, but are just filler injections hyped by catchy names like Y lift or Liquid lift (merely filler injections in the face). Yes, most filler injections will make patients look better, but most fillers only last if they are used in conjunction with a real lift.

There are several facelift procedures, but simple facelifts do not result in the ‘wind-tunnel’ effect or ‘surprised look’ that is sometimes caused by more extreme facelifts.

Recovery from a simple facelift is easier and has fewer complications than the more extreme variety of facelifts. Further, there is less chance of bruising and stretching and they are considerably less expensive.

The best candidate for a facelift is one whose face and neck has begun to sag, but whose skin still has some

elasticity and whose bone structure is strong and well defined. Most patients are in their 40’s to 60’s, but facelifts can be done successfully on people in their 70’s or 80’s.

When considering a facelift, consultation is done with the surgeon to determine your qualifications and type of procedure appropriate for you.

You will be asked about your history, be given a physical exam and administered a blood test. Be forewarned, many doctors will not do a facelift on people who smoke or have smoked, as this may have serious complications.

Sometimes the best results of the facelift procedure are attained by combining several surgical procedures, such as liposuction, brow lift, fat transfer, blepharoplasty, laser, or chin and cheek implants - all depending on the patient’s needs.

A newer technique is the ‘deep plane facelift’, which involves going under the muscle of the face and pulling it along with the skin to essentially make the facelift last longer. OFCs ‘not to blame’ for global financial woes, says ex-regulator “Irresponsible” governments, regulators and banks are mainly responsible for the global recession, not Offshore Financial Centers, said Tim Ridley, former Chairman of the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority.

“It is a myth that OFCs are primarily responsible for the recent financial meltdowns,” he told OffshoreAlert.

“The harsh reality is that the US meltdown resulted from an alliance between the politicians, the regulators and the banks to provide cheap housing loans to those who could never pay the loans back; and, in Europe the meltdown resulted from the irresponsible policies of governments who believed that a cradle to grave welfare system could be provided for ever on borrowed money.”

Although “the pendulum is still swinging against OFCs for the moment”, he said that “for the most, part, OFCs have dodged the misdirected bullet that ‘offshore’ was responsible for the meltdown”.

“In Cayman, the hedge fund industry is re-energized and is growing again, Asian IPOs are doing well, and captive insurance is hanging in,” he said.

“But the debt side (securitization) is still quiet, albeit with some green shoots, the banking and trust sector is essentially flat and, overall, the recovery in OFCs has been patchy.”

Ridley defined OFCs as “typically places that facilitate international financial transactions rather than create them” and said there were three likely scenarios for them: Doomsday, Nirvana or the Curate’s Egg. • “Doomsday” would be the “cataclysmic decline of these centers” caused by “major economic powers implementing domestic policies and programs that eliminate the need to use OFCs”, “the reintroduction of exchange/capital controls by all major economic powers”, or, less likely, “the effective implementation of international agreements between the major economic powers not to compete on regulatory and tax matters”.

Ridley said OFCS “cannot afford to become complacent again” and assume it is only a matter of time before “happy days are here again”.

“I believe success will come to those jurisdictions that can genuinely add value to international transactions and are recognized as so doing,” he said.

“This in turn requires the right mix of a stable and transparent political, legal, judicial and economic environment, no or limited direct taxation or a good network of double tax treaties, a good risk based regulatory and supervisory approach, a flexible and adaptive approach to legislation and regulation to provide the structures, products and supervision expected by the market, a willingness to engage with international standard setters, foreign governments, regulators and law enforcement and tax agencies to agree mutually satisfactory standards of regulation and cross border

assistance and law enforcement, modern infrastructure, a welcoming immigration policy to attract the expertise needed and an educated and motivated local work force.”

He concluded: “Many (but not all) OFCs meet the foregoing tests for being survivors and need not suffer death by a thousand cuts. But, to really thrive as financial services centers, OFCs must learn better from their own mistakes and those of others, and work more effectively to be fully accepted as legitimate participants in the global financial world.”

Costa CEO blames captain error for ship ROME (AP) — The captain of the cruise ship that capsized off Tuscany made an unauthorised deviation from its programmed course, a “human error” that led to the vessel’s deadly grounding, the ship’s Italian owner said Monday. Rescue operations, meanwhile, were halted as the wreckage slightly shifted.

The comments from Costa Crociere chairman and CEO Pier Luigi Foschi ramped up the pressure on the captain, who already is under investigation by authorities for suspected manslaughter as well as allegations he abandoned ship before the passengers were safe, violating the Italian navigation code.

Six bodies have been recovered so far from the wreckage of the Costa Concordia, which ran into a reef Friday night and capsised into the port area of Giglio, sparking a frantic evacuation of the 4,200 people onboard.

The rescue operation was called off mid-afternoon Monday after the Costa Concordia shifted a few inches (centimeters) in rough seas. The fear is that if the ship shifts significantly, some 500,000 gallons of fuel may begin to leak into the pristine waters around the island of Giglio.

Fire department spokesman Luca Cari said the ship had shifted a few centimeters vertically and horizontally Monday because of the turbulent waters. He said an underwater search for 16 people still missing was put on hold.

Foschi said his company, which is owned by the world’s largest cruiseline, Carnival Corp., stood by the captain, Francesco Schettino,

and would provide him with legal assistance. But he said the company disassociated itself from his behavior.

Costa ships have their routes programmed, and alarms go off when they deviate, the chief executive said in a press conference.

“This route was put in correctly.

The fact that it left from this course is due solely to a maneuver by the commander that was unapproved, unauthorised and unknown to Costa,” he said.

Schettino has insisted he didn’t

leave the liner early, telling Mediaset television that he had done everything he could to save lives.

“We were the last ones to leave the ship,” he said.

Foschi said the liner had passed all safety and technical tests in its 2011 evaluation. He added that the company’s main concern was the safety and well-being of the passengers and crew, as well as to ensure fuel doesn’t leak out from the upended hull into the water.

The 500,000 gallons of fuel onboard are in 17 separate tanks, Foschi said. Sensors have been put in place to track the movements of the ship.

Questions have been swirling about why the ship had navigated so close to the dangerous reefs and rocks that jut off Giglio’s eastern coast, amid suspicions the captain may have ventured too close while carrying out a maneuver to entertain tourists on the island.

The supporting-actor prize Sunday went to Christopher Plummer as an elderly widower who comes out as gay in the fatherson drama “Beginners.”

There are times on your weight loss journey when you’re not losing weight as quickly as you think you should.

Days or weeks can go by without you seeing movement on the scale, and it can get downright frustrating. You haven’t cheated at all and you’ve been faithful to your diet in all ways.

Hmm. I’ve said it. I’ve thought it. I’ve been wrong.

Most of us eat more than we think we do. This is the case if: • You helped yourself to an extra bit of butter.

• You moistened your meat with just a little gravy.

• You ate the chicken without removing the skin.

• You had a drink or two on Saturday night.

• You “cleaned” the plate - even though your appetite had long been satisfied.

• You had an extra helping because “it tasted so good.”

• You did a lot of sampling while cooking dinner to be certain everything was seasoned to perfection.

Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Zone Delivery Service, and other diet systems have one undeniable benefit to them: they define for the average person how large an actual ‘serving’ is.

Most of us underestimate the volume of food we eat (and consequently, underestimate the number of calories we consume in a day).

By fixing in your head what a serving size or ‘portion’ of food looks like, we can better estimate (and consequently, evaluate and calibrate) the amount of food we eat at each meal. Keep in mind, when it comes to weight loss, you need to take in less calories than you burn each day.

Two good rules of thumb: • A portion of meat (3 oz.) is the size of a deck of cards.

• A portion of carbohydrates (1 cup) is the size of a tennis ball.

Please remember to fill up on nonstarchy vegetables - they are full of nutrients, have very little impact on blood sugar, and contain little in the

way of calories.

Not eating frequently enough.

It is a social custom to eat ‘three square meals’ a day. While this may do for social purposes, for weight loss, you will want to aim for more frequent feedings. It is recommended that you consume a minimum of 5-6 small meals each day. By doing so, your body gets the signal that food is abundant, and there is no need to conserve energy.

Additionally, frequent feedings maximize your metabolism, as your body is constantly busy, burning calories by digesting your meals.

By not letting too much time pass between meals, you stabilize blood sugar levels since they never really get the chance to drop. By keeping your blood sugar stable, your hunger levels are minimized, decreasing the chances that you will be tempted to overeat at your next meal.

Choosing to drink your calories instead of eating them.

This is a very common problem among those attempting weight loss, due to the abundance of ‘healthy’ diet smoothies, protein concoctions, and weight loss shakes. There are 2 factors to keep in mind when relying on these liquid meal replacements.

First, many of the liquid diet shakes on the market and all fruit smoothies have an abundance of sugar in them.

This causes an immediate surge in energy followed by a huge crash due to the release of insulin to control the blood sugar rise. This dramatic shift in blood hormone levels (particularly insulin levels) is something you want to avoid, both for health reasons and for weight loss.

Secondly, most weight loss shakes are devoid of fiber. Fiber is one of your most precious allies when you are dieting. It helps you feel full and blunts the rise in insulin levels when all that sugar hits your bloodstream.

While fruit smoothies do contain some of the fiber from the pulp of the fruit, a better strategy would be to eat the actual fruits contained in the smoothie.

Lastly, the amount of calories that can be concentrated into a shake or smoothie is far greater than the equivalent volume of actual food. A 16 oz fruit smoothie may contain as many as 600 calories, and will not fill you up all that much! On the other hand, eating 600 calories of fruit will prove to be much more than the typical person can manage in a single sitting (at least, I personally donít know anyone that can eat more than 2 pounds of bananas at a single sitting!).

Think about it- when making major dietary changes, you want to get the most out of your calories. Wouldn’t you rather fill up, rather than drink something and be hungry again soon after?

And that’s exactly what children from Grace Christian Academy have been doing.

Internationally renowned opera singer Ms. Lisa Carlisle, offered guidance and coaching to some of the Cayman Islands future singing stars.

The soprano was part of a training workshop held at the John Gray Memorial Church in West Bay. About 22 students, boys and girls ages 9-15, from grades 4-9, received tutoring from the Welsh sensation.

During the workshop, Ms. Carlisle provided intuitive and technically oriented tips and advice to the students on how to properly develop and project their voices.

Workshop organiser, Ms. Fran McConvey, a music teacher at the school, said she invited Ms. Carlisle to help groom the potential of the choir members, particularly in the area of

voice projection.

Ms. McConvey said: “I asked her to come over to help work with the children on their voice projection, as kids tend to have a problem with that.

Ms. Carlisle added: “I enjoy teaching kids, and I enjoy conducting workshops on this Island.

“After the workshop, I expect the kids to become more aware of their voice as an instrument and about how it works.

“I want the kids to also understand the positive impact that an alert stance and performance on stage can have on an audience.

“It is important for classical singers, singing without a microphone to know just how to project their voices.”

Ms. Carlisle instructed the junior opera singers on proper breathing techniques and the appropriate postures, which should be utilised during a performance.

The children were tutored in large and small groups to ensure that the specific needs of the students

were addressed.

The kids were also briefed on how to develop and radiate confidence on stage and given tips to help them conquer their nervousness.

Ms. McConvey will be joining Lisa on stage playing violin and piano when she performs at the Camana Bay Arts and Recreation Centre on Saturday (8 October).

And the bus was so narrow without hardly any space It was so dark inside we couldn’t see our face, But comments and laughter rang joyful and hearty It was like being in a dark room enjoying a party.

Two hours of zooming and bumping, we finally came to a stop Food and chips and drinks we could finally shop And shop we did the break was really necessary By now it was nearing midnight and we were somewhat weary.

And guess where I headed? - I’ll count to three, That’s right you guessed it - I had to pee!

So I sifted through my purse to find the right note And waited for my 6 squares after which she wrote, “Muchus gratias,” she said, with a big smile across her face.

That again was worth a fiver as to the bus we raced.

Any way so much for the travelling that’s just one tale We’re all so grateful the engine didn’t fail.

The church and its people gave us something to admire The church was beautiful and so was the choir With a band of brass and of course Cuban singing Sweet serenades from long ago kept us swinging.

And when they sang, “onward Christian soldiers” in Spanish We raised all our voices triumphantly in simple English.

Folks, I must say to you that the island of Cuba is so beautiful It’s too bad that it’s ruled by those so dreadful.

When I say poor I mean really poor!

Things we take for granted they’re not at all sure.

Little necessities in life are few, no real luxuries at all But they still believe that one day it will be better forall.

Note: I tried their Cuban coffee and got hooked on it - and I’m not even a coffee drinker!

Battle of the West at the Annex The third day of the 2011/2012 CUC Primary Football League (PFL) Playoffs took place this past Saturday, January 14 at the Annex Field with the “Battle of the West” being the featured game in the prestigious Under 11 Champions Cup division.

The day’s proceedings began with the Under 9 Consolation Cup as Playoff leaders George Town Primary defeated Triple C 2-0, Cayman International School downed Prospect Primary 2-0 and Red Bay Primary beat Truth For Youth 2-0.

In the Under 9 Champions Cup, a somewhat depleted Cayman Prep maintained top spot in the Playoffs following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over second-placed Sir John A. Cumber Primary even without prolific goal-scorer Aaron Jervis who was off the Island. In other games, St. Ignatius Prep drew 1-1 with Grace Academy following a wonder goal by Brad Lansdell, NorthEast Schools and Savannah Primary drew 0-0 and the impressive South Sound Schools defeated Bodden Town Primary 4-0.

In the Under 11 Consolation Cup, Bodden Town Primary secured a semi final spot as the number one seed in the division after defeating NorthEast Schools 3-0 while Savannah Primary and Prospect Primary drew 1-1.

With Bodden Town’s victory, the four remaining teams all have an opportunity to make the final three spots in the semi finals with one Playoff Day to go.

Although Grace Academy gained only a single point from their two previous Playoff games, last week’s inspiring 0-0 draw with St. Ignatius Prep had renewed their confidence and desire to prove that they are able to compete against the better teams in the PFL. The game began as expected with a few wayward passes, mistimed tackles and overall scrappy play. The usual slick passing and effortless movements spectators have come to expect from the Sir John A. Cumber outfit was missing. Grace had a plan

Up 1-0, Sir John A. Cumber began to take control of the game as Doujaughn Murray stamped his authority in midfield. Abrahim Gordon and Xavier Comment were keeping Grace’s speedy striker Gunnar Studenhofft in check and Sir John A. Cumber’s forwards were beginning to put Callhan Studenhofft and his defenders under pressure.

Grace’s resilience paid dividends as against the run of play, substitute Jaden Ebanks broke free from the Sir John A. Cumber defence and calmly placed his shot into the left corner of the goal to level the score.

Grace’s players and fans were ecstatic and young Jaden was engulfed by teammates.

From the resulting restart, Sir John A. Cumber went in search of the winner and almost immediately, manof-the-match Doujhaugn Murray put his team back in front for good as he finished off a cross with a superbly taken shot.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — A day after a rare show of discord, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal quickly closed ranks.

Nadal had criticized Federer for his unwillingness to speak out on issues affecting the men’s game, allowing others to “burn themselves” as they seek improved conditions for players.

After joining Nadal in the second round of the Australian Open with a win on Monday, Federer said “things are fine” between the two longtime rivals, although he concedes that they disagree on a way to resolve a list of player grievances that includes the length of the season and the distribution of prize money.

“We can’t always agree on everything,” Federer said. “So far it’s always been no problem really.

We’ve seen it in other sports happening in the States. That’s why I’m always very careful about it.

“If there’s no avoiding it, I’ll support the rest of the players. But I just think we have to think it through how we do it, if we do it, can we do it, whatever it is, instead of just going out and screaming about it.”

Twenty-one year old Kendall can now continue his Olympic dream as he hopes to represent Cayman in London this summer.

On Sunday he faced Dustin Arnold of St Petersberg in the final and Kendall really came into his own.

Growing in both stature and ability, Arnold was knocked to the canvass twice in the second round. Gold was heading to Cayman.

Kendall said: “I felt I fought much better in the final. I knew I had to step up and I did. I seemed to get better the longer the tournament went on.”

More than 100 boxers took part in the Golden Gloves which was hailed a huge success by organiser Mark Streisand.

And he had special mention for our very own Kendall.

Mark said: “The tournament was a huge success and Kendall fought very well. At the registration beforehand my wife met Kendall and was extremely impressed with him.

“He was courteous, professional and really made an impression. He was a credit to Cayman and we wish him all the best for the future.”
