Balloon release celebrating 100 days of school at North Side Primary

Colourful balloons, costumes, happy children – all celebrating the number of days spent in school.

Can that be right? Yes! If the number is 100 and the school is North Side Primary, where on last week the whole school participated in the 100 day celebration.

The morning started with a 100 day assembly. During the day each of the classes did different assignments regarding the number 100. The activities ranged across the curriculum, including mathematics, English, creative writing, religion, art, and social studies.

Then all the classes gathered on the basketball court in the afternoon to form the shape 100. Each child had a special balloon and message that was released into the sky.

To help authenticate the festivity for the students, they were also given an opportunity to dress as they would have either 100 years ago or how they would like to dress 100 years from now.

Deputy Principal Mrs. Joy EbanksKing stated, “This is a celebration that is done around the world, and I know my class and the entire school has been eagerly waiting for this day.”

Most Honduras fire inmates awaited trial COMAYAGUA, Honduras (AP) — The prisoners whose scorched bodies were carried out piece by piece Thursday morning from a charred Honduran prison had been locked inside an overcrowded penitentiary where most inmates had never been charged, let alone convicted, according to an internal Honduran government report obtained by The Associated Press.

More than half of the 856 inmates of the Comayagua farm prison north of the Central American country’s capital were either awaiting trial or being held as suspected gang members, according to a report sent by the Honduran government this month to the United Nations.

A fire started by an inmate tore through the prison Tuesday night, burning and suffocating screaming men in their locked cells as rescuers desperately searched for keys.

Officials confirmed 358 dead, making it the world’s deadliest prison fire in a century.

Survivors told horrific tales of climbing walls to break the sheet metal roofing and escape, only to see prisoners in other cell blocks being burned alive. Inmates were found stuck to the roofing, their bodies fused to the metal.

From the time firefighters received a call at 10:59 p.m. local time, the rescue was marred by human error and conditions that made the prison ripe for catastrophe.

According to the report, obtained exclusively by the AP, on any given day there were about 800 inmates in a facility built for 500. There were only 51 guards by day and just 12 at night — the case at the time of the fire.

The prison has no medical or mental health care and the budget allows less than $1 per day per prisoner for food. Prisoners only needed to bear a simple tattoo to be incarcerated under the strict Honduran anti-gang laws, the report said. The U.N. condemns the practice as a violation of international law.

comment on the supervision or the crowded conditions in Comayagua, a prison farm where inmates grew corn and beans. He referred an AP reporter to the commander of the prison police, who said comment would have to come from his public affairs office, which did not respond to an AP request late Wednesday.

President Porfirio Lobo on Wednesday suspended Orellana and other top prison officials.

Inside the prison, charred walls and debris showed the path of the fire, which burned through six barracks that had been crammed with 70 to 105 inmates each in fourlevel bunk beds.

Bodies were found piled up in the bathrooms, where inmates apparently fled to the showers, hoping the water would save them from blistering flames. Prisoners perished clutching each other in bathtubs and curled up in laundry sinks.

“It was something horrible,” said survivor Eladio Chica, 40, as he was led away by police Wednesday night, handcuffed, to testify before a local court about what he saw. “I only saw flames, and when we got out, men were being burned, up against the bars, they were stuck to them.”

The deadly inferno never had to happen.

The frantic inmate who started the fire gave warning, phoning the

state governor and screaming he was going to burn the place down. After the man, who wasn’t identified, lit a mattress on fire a few minutes later, crews said they rushed to the prison, arriving two minutes after a call for help because the firehouse was nearby. But the handful of guards held them out for a catastrophic 30 minutes, saying they thought the screams inside were a prison break and a riot. When rescuers finally were allowed in, they said they couldn’t find keys or guards to unlock the barracks.

Fifteen minutes away, the U.S. military’s Southern Command operates Joint Task Force Bravo, where major search and rescue teams and fire squads are on standby.

They were never dispatched.

Candace Allen, a spokeswoman for Joint Task Force Bravo, said they can only send what they’re asked for, so throughout

the night they sent surgical masks, flashlights and Glowsticks. No one asked for firefighters.

On Thursday morning, officials continued their investigation at the prison, where murals of Catholic saints, Jesus Christ and psalms stand out in an otherwise miserable place. Two palm trees flank the front entrance where a sign reads: “Let there be justice, even if the world perishes.”

“Conditions at Comayagua? I’d have to say among the worst in Honduras,” said Ron W. Nikkel, president of Prison Fellowship International who visited the facility in 2005. “It was very congested, there’s not enough food, it’s dangerous and dirty.”

The U.S. State Department has criticised the Honduran government for harsh prison conditions, citing severe overcrowding, malnutrition, and lack of adequate sanitation.

MPs launch bid to “close” Cayman

A group of 27 British MPs have launched a motion to “close“ the Cayman Islands, calling it ‘a tax haven” and “a disgrace” that is “fuelling the world economic crisis”, and reducing living standards.

Primary mover of the “Early Day Motion” (EDM) John Cryer has been joined by five fellow sponsors, asking London “to introduce urgent legislation to help close tax havens and increase transparency”.

An EDM is a formal motion submitted to the House of Commons for debate, used chiefly, according to a Parliamentary website, “to draw attention to an event or cause”.

MPs yesterday expressed fresh support for the 20 January EDM, with one of the 27 signatories, Labour’s Steve Rotheram, saying he sought to remedy a fundamentally unfair system.

“I stand by this [EDM]. I think it’s wrong if someone like Mitt Romney is using Cayman to avoid paying his fair share of taxes.

“I have 8.8% unemployment in my district,” The Liverpool MP told iNews Cayman, “and if people paid their fair share, it would help. I am concerned about the use of this, that the top 1% of citizens in the UK are to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Willard Mitt Romney leads the race to lead the Republican party in November’s US presidential election, and has been accused of banking millions of dollars in Cayman, avoiding US taxes.

Mr Cryer echoed Mr Rotheram in a recent interview, saying it was “a disgrace that the Cayman Islands, a tax haven, can enable wealthy corporations and individuals such as Mitt Romney and others in the wealthiest 1% to avoid tax and still be cloaked in secrecy.”

Despite repeated telephone calls and emails, Labour MP Mr Cryer has failed to respond to any questions.

Both Cayman Finance Chairman Richard Coles and former Chairman and head of the Cayman Islands Stock Exchange Anthony Travers were unavailable for comment yesterday.

However, the group’s London lobbyist until recently, Jack Irvine, dismissed the motion, saying it was unlikely to have much impact.

“This motion will go nowhere and it is signed by the usual lefties who hate the financial industry. Nobody takes it seriously,” he said.

Mr Cryer’s 150-word motion names the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and the G20 group of industrialised

nations, quoting their “identification of the role of tax havens by wealthy corporations in fuelling the global economic crisis from 2009 onwards”.

“This House,” his EDM says, was alarmed not only by Mr Romney, but also “is concerned about the continued use of tax havens by the top one per cent in the US and UK to avoid paying the correct tax in their own country.”

The motion “calls on the Government to introduce urgent legislation to help close tax havens and increase transparency so that the very rich pay their fair share of tax in their respective countries.”

Mr Rotheram acknowledged that Cayman had 27 Tax information Exchange Agreements and that individuals – not the Cayman Islands government -- were responsible for their own tax payments, but said the UK should move to close “loopholes”.

“I agree it’s the responsibility of every citizen to pay, but we are calling for increased transparency. It’s about loopholes, and our government needs to look at what those loopholes are and close tax avoidance and evasion.

“It’s not just the law, but it is a moral duty, so we need to make things as difficult as possible for the less scrupulous and if we can pressure them, that will help.”

Seventeen men between the ages of 21 and 40 began their passport2success programme, aimed at helping people gain the skills they need to find jobs.

Each of the men has to be unemployed in order to qualify for the programme.

The programme, which was first offered to school-leavers and other young people, has proved so successful that it is being extended to adults, and the women’s Passport2success programme is already in its fifth week.

The whole spectrum of skills, not only those needed for getting a job – such as tips for interviews and resume writing - but those necessary for ongoing success in the workplace are also taught during the programme.

Mrs Tasha Ebanks-Garcia from the Wellness Centre in George Town is helping to facilitate the course explained: “The other

part of the content is on lifeskills development. We look at attitude, assertiveness verses aggression, conflict resolution skills, healthy relationships, stress management, and we have a series on responsibility and accountability. We also look at effective communication.”

Mrs Ebanks-Garcia stressed that it wasn’t a case of participants sitting down and taking notes while somebody lectured them: “Participants are actively involved in their learning, and we preplan each session to allow them to engage in the learning process.

We have discussions and activities, and they do lots of role playing in different scenarios - its very practical, very hands-on.

“They also make presentations using Powerpoint, and many of them haven’t used Powerpoint before, or they can use Publisher so that they’re making a little news letter to convey information,” Mrs Ebanks-Garcia added.

In addition to the regular course instructors, experts from different industries are invited into the classroom to lead seminars with the students, Mrs. Ebanks Garcia said.

The course is divided into two main parts, with the first four weeks taking place in the classroom: “During the first four weeks we get a feeling of what their interests are in terms of pursuing a career or skills development,” Mrs Ebanks-Garcia said.

The remainder of the course consists of two days a week in the classroom, and three in the workplace.

“We have a number of companies that have worked with us in the past, who offer participants internships.

We’ve got around 40 companies that work with us and we are actively seeking additional support from the business community to provide more placements,” Mrs Ebanks-Garcia added.

Call for radical election shake-up Tad Stoner

The electoral map of Grand Cayman will be entirely redrawn, with its six residential districts subdivided into 16 distinct voting areas, each sending its own representative to the Legislative Assembly.

Under the “one man-one vote” regime advocated yesterday by North Side independent Ezzard Miller and East End MLA Arden McLean, Cayman’s electoral boundaries would be scrambled, adding three Parliamentarians to the existing 15, and, according to the two, boosting the democratic process for everyone.

Even Cayman Brac and Little Cayman would get the redistricting treatment, although the outcome would not change the Sister Islands dual representation.

On Wednesday afternoon, the two MLAs launched a petition they hope will force government into staging a public referendum in November, changing the voting rules in time for May 2013 elections, making them, they say, more equitable for everyone, “We have a responsibility to enlighten this country on the value of single-member constituencies,” said Mr Mclean, East End’s sole MLA. The election of one representative per district, he said, “requires intimacy on the part of politicians with the members of their constituency. It demands accountability and it ensures responsibility by the representative for their mandate.”

Mr Miller, lone legislator for North Side, has twice been rebuffed in the LA, seeking support for electoral changes, and calling attention to the

2009 constitutional mandate for “one person, one vote” and 18 MLAs. On Wednesday, he pointed to three Electoral Boundary Commission recommendations, neglected, he said, by the ruling UDP. “Nothing has been done by government,” Mr Miller said, although last April and again in December UDP officials had tried simply to add two seats to George Town and one to Bodden Town.

“It was so poorly done, though, that they had to withdraw it,” he said.

The petition, aimed at Cayman’s 15,175 registered voters, requires the signature of 25% of those electors, 3,794, in order to force government to mount what the constitution calls a “people-initiated referendum”, which will call for the new singlemember constituencies and the new electoral map.

Both George Town and West Bay now send four people to parliament, and Bodden Town and the Sister Islands each elect two. New divisions would create 18 districts, each sending one.

West Bay would be divided into east, north, northwest and south sections.

George Town would separate into north, central, west and south districts, and add Red Bay and Prospect.

Bodden Town would subdivide into Newlands, Savannah, Pedro St James and Bodden Town.

North Side and East End would remain unchanged, while the Sister Islands would be labeled Cayman Brac East and Cayman Brac West, encompassing the hundreds-only population of Little Cayman.

Mr Miller said the drive had “already started”, with an announcement by Mr

McLean at a Monday-night East End political meeting, and a modest doorto-door canvass. Already, he said, 27 people had volunteered to help and “we will have a lot more, at least 50.”

“We are looking for 4,000 signatures to trigger the referendum,” Mr Miller said, ”and look for 5,000 as a goal.” The single-page petition has been designed, he said, for ease of confirmation, asking a picture ID and a voter registration number. Each page will provide 10 signatures, and each “book” will contain 10 pages.

Both Mr Miller and Mr McLean interpreted the constitutional phrase “reasonable time”, during which a referendum must be staged after being triggered.

“We want to get the signatures to Cabinet by the first week of April so they have time to set up the [November] referendum. I think government would have a hard time explaining why, in eight months, that is not a ‘reasonable time’. That would be unreasonable.”

Police investigate Coral Gardens death A 56-year-old cruise ship passenger died in the area of Coral Gardens in the North Sound.

paramedics were standing-by. He was thereafter transported to the Cayman Islands Hospital in George Town, but was found to be dead on arrival.

“Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing and further details will be made available in due course.”

Surgeons place pacemaker in 15-minute-old newborn entered the world with a heart rate of 45 beats per minute. A health newborn heartbeat is 120 to 150 beats per minute.

“The only way to save this baby was to deliver the baby right away and then the pacemaker,” said Dr. Katsuhide Maeda, the surgeon whose steady hand stitched the pacemaker’s electrical leads to Jaya’s walnut-sized heart.

Stanford announced details of the operation this week.

During a routine prenatal visit, doctors told Leanne Maharaj, 26,

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The name Jaya in Hindi means victorious. And little Jaya Maharaj was just that, when she became one of the smallest recipients of a pacemaker when she was just 15 minutes old.

A team of doctors at Stanford University’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital determined the girl born nine weeks premature had only hours to live if they did not perform the surgery.

Jaya, who was diagnosed in the womb with a severe heart ailment,

and Kamneel Maharaj, 31, that their first child’s heart rate was dangerously low. They learned that their daughter suffered from congenital heart block, in which the mother’s immune system mistakenly attacks the nerve fibers that cause the fetus’ heart to beat.

The prognosis was grim: Doctors would have to induce labour and force the baby to be born as early as possible to correct the ailment before her heart failed. But Jaya grew and gained weight as her parents waited, giving them hope.

Twenty-seven years after Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met a group of Iowa farmers and business leaders during a diplomatic exchange to this Mississippi River town, the likely future leader of the world’s most populous country returned Wednesday for a brief reunion to reminisce with the first Americans he ever met.

“My impression of the country came from you. For me, you are America,” Xi told a group of about 16 people he referred to as “old friends.”

Whitney Houston fans to follow funeral on Internet NEW YORK (AP) — They won’t be there in person, but singer Whitney Houston’s millions of fans worldwide will be able to share in her homecoming service Saturday as they watch her private funeral on the Internet.

It will provide a much-needed connection for fans who have lacked a formal place to eulogise Houston, one of the world’s bestselling artists who died in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Saturday at the age of 48.

Some have gathered and placed

flowers outside the Newark, N.J., church where the funeral will be held by invitation-only at the request of Houston’s family, who wish to maintain some privacy.

Others have stopped by the funeral home. But many have longed to share more fully in commemorating the superstar’s life, and have shown their grief in one of the few ways available to them — by buying her music.

Houston’s funeral will be at New Hope Baptist Church, where she sang as a child. Her eulogy

The Editor Speaks Shouldn’t completing our schools be the highest priority?

The Clifton Hunter High School that was scheduled to open for Easter with all the accompanying hoopla has now been delayed until September. Wow. We are not talking about a few weeks but SIX months! The reason given by Hon. Rolston Anglin, the Education Minister, is “shoddy work”.

Once again we are given an explanation that is so difficult to believe. Mr. Anglin you have an Architect and a Superintendent of Works paid to inspect the works so it isn’t ‘shoddy.’ You have a government inspector who is supposed to be permanently on the site or visit the site EVERY DAY! Do you really expect us to believe that ‘shoddy work’ of such a magnitude it is going to put the project back SIX MONTHS and it was UN-NOTICED until now? I am a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building – a Chartered Builder – Mr. Anglin, and that reason given sounds preposterous. If this is true then heads should roll and I would be happy to be the person to execute the blade.

It is shocking that a political football (or in this case balls) should be the order of the day. Blame by the UDP on the PPM for committing the country to two schools at the same time with not sufficient funds in place to construct them and the PPM blaming the UDP for incurring costs estimated by the UDP of over $100 million each. Having seen the specifications for the two schools (John Gray is the other one) they are, in my opinion, un-necessarily high with fixtures that would not be out of place in an expensive lawyer’s office block, but how can original estimates of approximately $110 million for both schools suddenly leap to double that figure?

This is public money and we have a right to know the reasons without one party blaming the other. We want a detailed report, Mr. Anglin, as to why there is a six month delay, a comprehensive list of all the ‘shoddy work’ and the reason why it was allowed to happen and not be corrected immediately, plus a full detailed report from an independent quantity surveyor of the increase in costs. However, the priority is completing BOTH schools. Children are our future. We spend a fortune on security and punishment when education is the key. Without education you have anarchy. Without education you have crime. Without education you don’t have knowledge. Without education we become hostages to people who do. “Education is a form of human development that knows no end or limit (Aaron Falbel)”. If schools don’t educate, the problems this country faces in the future are enormous. If we don’t have schools, or schools are overcrowded how can we possibly have education?

Hon. Alden McLaughlin, the PPM leader, said he acknowledged that the country needed to work on the primary schools but he said it was a question of priorities as the government now was struggling to find the money to complete anything at all. Can there be a higher priority? He seems to be implying there is?

I can certainly agree with him when he says, “A lot of people still beat up on me [referring to his continuation with the two projects in the face of government’s deteriorating financial fortunes] but it was about my commitment to equity in education because it is just wrong in principle to have the kids from one area having access to all of these facilities, amenities and opportunities while other kids, just because of where they are from, do not have access. My policy was when we do the high schools they had to be done all at once so all kids had the same opportunities. That is not what is going to happen now.”

I agree with Mr. Anglin telling Cayman News Service that the overcrowding and problems in the primary school were a priority and needed to be addressed. I have to ask when was it going to be addressed? Is his idea of ‘priority’ the same as mine?

Crime starts in the classroom. Can you possibly imagine how a crime rate would escalate without a classroom for our children? Children without education?

New head of Family Resource Centre CAYMAN ISLANDS (GIS) — The Ministry of Community Affairs, Gender and Housing appointed Miriam Foster as the Family Resource Centre’s (FRC) Programme Coordinator earlier this month (1 February).

Six years ago, Ms Foster joined the then Women’s Resource Centre (WRC) as an Administration Intake Officer. In 2009, WRC joined the National Parenting Programme (NPP) and the Young Parents Programme (YPP) to become the Family Resource Centre. Thereafter, she moved up the ranks as Programme Officer and Programme Facilitator. Since August 2011, she has been Acting Programme Coordinator.

While in her acting capacity, Ms Foster initiated the first

celebration of International Men’s Day Celebration in Cayman which focused on improving male health while promoting gender equality. In celebration of Honouring Women’s Month in March, Ms Foster and her team is currently busy planning the various activities outlined for the month; including a revamped International Women’s Day Celebration that will be on the 8 March at Camana Bay from 6-8pm.

It will feature music, competitions and a silent auction.

“I am honoured to be working with a great team and be able to aid in improving the lives of families in the community,” said Ms Foster.

She encourages families to attend the free parenting sessions which are held on the third Wednesday of every month and get to know

the diverse programming that FRC offers. She strongly believes in developing programming that meets the needs of the community and constantly looking for ways to stay relevant.

“Government is really excited to have Miriam on board with us,” said Minister Mike Adam. “I am confident that with her wealth of knowledge, commitment and hard work, she will continue to be a valuable asset to our islands, and in particular, many families.”

With an energetic, humourous and passionate outlook on life, Ms Foster enjoys spending time with husband and their two children, as well as family and friends. She gains personal satisfaction by seeing the small changes in client’s lives. Adding, “It’s a privilege to

Memorial walk raises scholarship funds for International College Students, alumni, faculty and community members turned out for the 11th annual Hugh Cummings Memorial Run/Walk last weekend to raise money for the scholarship fund at the International College of the Cayman Islands.

Raising more than $3,000, some 50 runners and walkers showed up before sunrise at the campus in Newlands-Savannah and headed toward the Pedro St. James Castle and back, about 5 km. The scholarship funds will be used to assist financially strapped students pay for tuition and books.

Event organizer and admissions director Anita Fausett-Khan said the Memorial Run/Walk brings out a special sense of enthusiasm and community spirit.

“Even though it can be hard for some people to get up before dawn, it is so worthwhile once you get here,” said Ms. Fausett-Khan.

“There is such a strong sense of community and energy walking among the group. And as you make the loop around Pedro Castle the sun is rising so that it feels like your body and spirit are being re-charged.”

particularly meaningful as the unstable economy has made it difficult for some students to continue their education and finish their degrees. A key part of what the International College has stood for since it was established 40 years ago is being accessible to all students who are academically ready, said International College President John Cummings, PhD. “Many students have lost their jobs or are unable to find fulltime employment, but they are still working hard to finish their degrees,” said Dr. Cummings.

“The scholarship funds from the Memorial Walk can be just the financial support they need to help see them through.”

Avid runner David Jackson, who finished with a 35-minute time, said this Memorial Run/Walk is unique because it is one of the few events that are not on West Bay Road and it is a beautiful route.

“What makes this run so different is that I get to see the ocean and there is not much traffic so it is peaceful,” said Mr. Jackson. “This is my second year and I plan to do it every year.”

This year’s design for the Memorial Walk T-shirt featured the local saying ‘Come so walk wid me nah!’ which means ‘Let’s come on a walk together.’ The T-shirts were sponsored by Cayman National, who has been a long standing supporter and friend of the college for many years.

“We are pleased to continue to support the Hugh Cummings Memorial Walk, which specifically aims to provide educational

opportunities for students who otherwise may not be in a financial position to continue their education,” said Claudia Welds, Cayman National Senior Executive of Corporate Communications.

Event sponsors also included Fosters Food Fair, Tortuga Rum, Dunkin’ Donuts, Flowers Water and Saxon MG. Pedro St. James, Ace Screenprint and the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service also helped make the Memorial Walk a success.

Some 50 people participated in the Memorial Walk that started at the International College campus and looped around St. Pedro Castle.

The Grand Cayman Alamo and National rental location recently opened in February 2012 to serve customers in the popular Caribbean tourist destination.

Counterfeit drugs becoming big business worldwide WASHINGTON (AP) — The discovery that a fake version of the widely used cancer medicine Avastin is circulating in the United States is raising new fears that the multibillion-dollar drugcounterfeiting trade is increasingly making inroads in the U.S. The criminal practice has largely been relegated to poor countries with lax regulations. But with more medicines and drug ingredients for sale in the U.S. being manufactured overseas, American authorities are afraid more counterfeits will find their way into this country, putting patients’ lives at risk.

The Avastin discovery follows other recent instances in the U.S. of counterfeiting, involving such drugs as Viagra, the cholesterol medicine Lipitor and the weightloss pill Alli.

“We do know there are counterfeits continuing to try and make their way onto the U.S. supply chain,” said Connie Jung, an associate director in the Food and Drug Administration’s office of drug security.

The FDA announced Tuesday it is investigating fake vials of Avastin that were sold to at least 19 doctors and clinics, including 16 sites in California, two in Texas and one in Chicago. Tests showed the vials did not contain the active ingredient in Avastin, which is given intravenously in hospitals, clinics and doctors’ offices to treat several types of cancer.

The contents of the vials are still being analysed, and the FDA said it has not received any reports of patients who were harmed.

FDA officials said the counterfeit Avastin was imported from Britain and distributed by Volunteer Distribution, a wholesaler based in Gainesboro, Tenn. British regulators notified the FDA about the products in December, but the agency didn’t confirm they were fake until last week.

The FDA gave assurances Wednesday that the U.S. remains one of the most secure pharmaceutical markets in the

world. But the news sent cancer doctors scrambling to check their records.

Mary Mathias, a nurse who orders drugs for one doctor on the FDA list — Dr. Phillip L. Chatham in Granada Hills, Calif., — said they had stopped using the company in question at least a year ago.

Because Avastin treatments are spaced one to two weeks apart, it is not likely that someone would get more than one infusion from the same vial. And because these are people facing a life-threatening disease, it is hard to say whether missing one treatment with the real drug would compromise their care.

Gauging harm from a counterfeit cancer treatment is nearly impossible, said Dr. Robert C. Young, former president of the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia and now a consultant to cancer centers.

A colon cancer patient, for example, might receive 18 to 20 Avastin infusions over six months.

Counterfeits have traditionally been more of a concern in developing regions like Asia and Latin America, where as many as 30 percent of drugs sold are fake, according to the World Health Organization. The group estimates just 1 percent of drugs dispensed in the U.S. and other developed nations are fake.

But incidents of counterfeiting reported by drugmakers have increased steadily over the decade to more than 1,700 worldwide last year, though only 6 percent of those were in the U.S. There are few reliable estimates on the value of the global counterfeit drug trade, though most place it in the tens of billions.

Counterfeiting has become more prevalent as pharmaceutical supply chains increasingly stretch across continents. Over 80 percent of the active ingredients used in U.S. pharmaceuticals are now manufactured overseas, according to a recent congressional report, and experts say this has made

it easier to move counterfeit products into this country.

A single vial of Avastin sells for $2,400, and the drug had nearly $2.7 billion in U.S. sales last year, while the sentence for drug counterfeiting in the United States is about three years in prison.

When action got underway, an aerial view would have portrayed a serpentine line of persons stretching over quite a long distance-some running hard and fast, some enjoying a recreational run or walk, some really getting into the emotional mood as they traversed the distance hand-in-hand.

A highlight of the festivities was the shorter distance run by more than fifty participants under the age of 12, with all finishers receiving

medals, which they wore with pride.

Redknapp says part-time England role possible for Euros Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp believes somebody could take the England job on a part-time basis for Euro 2012, but not in the long term.

Redknapp, 64, is the favourite for the post but insists “it wouldn’t be fair” to walk out on Spurs.

Asked if someone could do the job part-time, he told Abu Dhabi Sports: “In the short term maybe it’s possible for the European Championship.

“But in the long term it’s not possible to manage a club and a national team.”

Redknapp added: “It’s difficult enough to manage in the Premier League without having to worry about managing the England team as well. You want to be watching England players play, you want to be watching the opposition.

Arsenal’s Champions League defeat a disaster - Arsene Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger described his side’s 4-0 last-16 first-leg hammering by AC Milan as “shocking” and the result as “a disaster”.

Wenger admits his side are all-but out of the Champions League following their worst defeat in European competition. The Frenchman said: “We don’t live in a dream world.

There is maybe a 2% or 5% chance statistically, but realistically we are out of this competition.

“We made mistake after mistake and we were punished.” He added: “We were never in the game. We were very poor offensively and defensively.

“It was shocking to see how we were beaten everywhere. It was our worst performance in Europe by far.

“There was not one moment in the 90 minutes we were really in the game, and it was always the same problem, balls over the top and we were well beaten.”

Wenger’s side lacked defensive shape and failed to provide any

ammunition for their forwards as they were outclassed at the San Siro.

The Gunners went behind in the 15th minute when Kevin-Prince Boateng was allowed space to fire in and they never looked like getting back into the game.

Former Manchester City forward Robinho headed in from close range and then capitalised on a slip from Thomas Vermaelen to fire low past Wojciech Szczesny.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic compounded their woes by adding a fourth from the penalty spot after he was brought down in the box by Johan Djourou.

London watchdog slams secrecy around Oly ticketing LONDON (AP) — A London city watchdog has slammed the committee organising the 2012 Olympics for its ticket policy, arguing that the secrecy surrounding the allocation of Olympic tickets has undermined public confidence.

The 25-member London Assembly, which acts as a check on London Mayor Boris Johnson, challenged Olympic organisers on Thursday to give more information on its ticket allocations in a report labeled “Sold Out?” The London Olympic organizing committee — called LOCOG — is a private entity, and the assembly complained that means it is exempt from Freedom of Information laws which could be used to force a handover of the data.

“It is completely unacceptable that an organisation that only exists because of a huge investment of public money can hide behind its status as a private company to avoid questions it does not like,” said Dee Doocey, head the committee that wrote the report.

“For most people, the games will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so

it’s vital they have confidence in the ticketing process, particularly those who have missed out on tickets.”

London Olympic organisers said they would respond to the assembly’s request when ticket sales are done.

London’s Olympic ticketing process has been dogged by repeated computer problems and huge demand.

Organisers set up a complicated lottery system in which people blindly registered for tickets and handed over their credit card details to pay for them before they knew what — if any — tickets they were getting.

A majority of ticket seekers failed to get any in the first-round sale that ended in April — with 22 million requests coming in for the 6.6 million tickets available in prices that ranged from 20.12 pounds ($31.60) to 2,012 pounds ($3,159). Further rounds were blighted by computer problems, and plans for future ticket sales have failed to stem public grumbling.

No. 1 Luke Donald comes full circle at Riviera LOS ANGELES (AP) — Luke Donald was on the practice range at Riviera before dawn Wednesday, so dark that only temporary floodlights allowed him to see where the ball was going.

It was a snapshot of the perks that come with being No. 1 in the world, and what got him there.

The best player gets his choice of tee times for the pro-am, and the early spots go first. Along with being No. 1 in the world, Donald sits atop both the PGA Tour and European Tour money lists, the first player ever to lead the two biggest tours.

As for the work ethic? Getting to the top wasn’t an accident.

“I think the best part of being No. 1 is knowing that my best golf is

good enough to get me to that No. 1 spot, just from a confidence and mental standpoint,” Donald said.

“That’s gratifying to know that the hard work is paying off.”

The hardest part might be the encore. Donald is coming off a year he won’t ever forget, and it all began at Riviera with a round he would like to erase from his memory. In his first event, he shot a 79 in the second round to miss the cut.

Toward the end of his season, he had won a career-best four times, including the most exciting finish this side of a major when he birdied six straight holes to start the back nine at Disney and closed with a 64 for a two-shot victory. It gave him the double money title, and was

enough to make him a landslide winner of PGA Tour player of the year.

Off the course was joy and grief.

His father, Colin, died of heart failure just a few days before Donald’s wife gave birth to their second daughter.

“Obviously, a decent amount of my work had already been done,” Donald said. “I’d had a great season up until that point. And in a way, those couple weeks were very tough. I think the birth of my second daughter helped shed a little bit of grace on the whole situation.

It helped with the passing of my father. And I think I came out of it a stronger person with a little bit more perspective.”

Celtic hits back at Alex Salmond over Rangers comments Celtic FC has attacked Alex Salmond for saying the club needs bitter rivals Rangers to prosper.

Mr Salmond (pictured) reportedly told the broadcaster Al Jazeera: “Celtic can’t prosper unless Rangers are there”.

He was responding to questions after Rangers was placed in administration.

In a strongly-worded statement, Celtic said it was “disappointed” and did not wish to see its position that it could stand alone being “misrepresented for political reasons”. The Ibrox club entered administration on Tuesday after HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) pursued legal action at the Court of Session in Edinburgh over alleged unpaid VAT and PAYE totalling about £9m.

Mr Salmond’s comments were reported to have been made during an interview with Sir David Frost, which is due to be broadcast on Al Jazeera English on Friday.

“Equally, they’ve got to have cognisance of the fact that we’re talking about a huge institution, part of the fabric of the Scottish nation as well as Scottish football, and everybody realises that.

“The most diehard Celtic supporter understands that Celtic

can’t prosper unless Rangers are there.

“The rest of the clubs understand that as well. Therefore you have to have cognisance of these things when you’re pursuing public policy.”

On Monday, Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell told the BBC that his club did not need Rangers.

Speaking about the possibility of the Ibrox club going bust, he said this “would have no material effect on Celtic”.

Mr Lawwell added: “We look

After Mr Salmond’s comments were reported on Thursday, Celtic released a statement re-asserting this position. It said: “We are very disappointed with the first minister’s claims that Celtic ‘need’ Rangers and that Celtic ‘can’t prosper unless Rangers are there’.

“This is simply not true. In a series of interviews given just three days ago, we made it abundantly

clear that Celtic has a well-defined strategy and a business plan independent of the fortunes of any other club. That remains absolutely the case.

“The predicament of Rangers is clearly a serious and complex matter with a whole range of possible outcomes.

“However, we are extremely well-qualified to make our own position clear and have no wish to see this being misrepresented for political reasons.”

Three of the hottest sporting talents in Cayman set off for foreign shores yesterday with one thing on their minds – the Olympics.

Kendall Ebanks and Tafari Ebanks along with renowned coach Norman “Stormin” Wilson, will fly the flag at the International Boxing event in the Dominican Republic.

While fellow pugilist Dariel Ebanks goes a little further afield, to Cardiff, capital of Wales, in the United Kingdom for a pre-Olympic training camp.

For Kendall and Tafari, the competition gives the pair the chance to record competitive ring time ahead of London 2012.

Kendall is desperate to chase

medal glory in the UK – and has done so thanks to the support of close family members who have sponsored his latest trip.

Fighting on foreign soil is nothing new for this trio. All have fought around the world in successful tournaments.

At just 17 years old, talented prospect Tafari is the youngest of the boxers heading out of Cayman.

He and Kendall will need to be at their best for a total of five fights to bring back gold medals in the competition which runs until February 23rd.

And Kendall was full of praise for the youngster who he feels is ready to stand up and make a name for himself.

West Bayer Kendall said: “I got Tafari registered for this tournament

cause I feel he is ready to step into the Elite World.

“It is good he starts from an early age because Dariel and I did not get that chance.

“Thank God we were able to handle the level of elite fighter though and compete and win fights.”

Dariel’s high performance training camp in Cardiff is reward for his good performance during a tournament in Azerbaijan last year.

Not only will he get the chance to train with some of the best amateurs from around the world, but he will also be able to acclimatise to both the European weather and culture ahead of the Olympics.

The southpaw said: “It’s a great opportunity for me to sharpen my skills and make me not only a better fighter, but also a better person.”
