Two days, two fatal shootings and two families left devastated.

Andrew Baptist, 24, died in a hail of bullets on Thursday night.

Detectives say his name had repeatedly been mentioned in

connection with Tuesday’s murder of Robert Bush.

Father of two Baptist was sitting in a yard in Sand Hill Road when two masked gunmen pounced brandishing their weapons.

Baptist’s friends fled leaving the intended target staring down the barrels of the guns.

He never stood a chance and died almost the instant the triggers were pulled.

The shooting, just before 9pm, came less than 48 hours after Bush was murdered in nearby Captain Joe and Osbert Road.

Chief Superintendent John Jones vowed on Friday: “Their luck will run out. I can tell you that.”

The long awaited redevelopment of the old Courtyard Marriott Hotel is finally underway.

The reopening of the Marriott forms part of a massive multi-million dollar development agreement between real estate mogul, Mr. Kenneth Dart and the Cayman Islands Government.

The pre-redevelopment phase, comprising the stripping of the interior dry walls of the hotel’s interior partitions, has already started.

The hotel, which is located on the West Bay Road, has been closed for more than 2 years.

In an interview with iNews, Public Relations Manager for Dart Realty (Cayman) Ltd. Ms. Jo Gammage indicated that this is only preredevelopment work.

Ms. Gammage also said the actual redevelopment phase will soon follow.

“The actual redevelopment has not yet started.

“What they are doing now is stripping out the interior of the building.

“This part of the operation is a five week project.

“Upon completion of the redevelopment, the hotel will look different and will upgrade to a 4-5 star hotel.”

Dart say that a Caymanian Construction Company, and local workers are currently employed on the project.

A team of more than 60 Caymanian construction workers are reported to be employed.

Following the furious onslaught of hurricane Paloma in August 2008,and the thrashing of Hurricane Gustav, only three months later, the once scenic hotel was left in absolute ruin.

The derelict building remained dormant for about two years before it was finally sold by Atlanta based, Real Estate developer, Stan Thomas, to Dart.

Grandparents with webcam become new online stars McMINNVILLE, Ore. (AP) — It slowly began to dawn on Esther and Bruce Huffman that perhaps they were being filmed.

“Warning,” the gray-haired, bespectacled grandmother reads off the screen. “You must stop recording before trying to close cyber link.”

Pause. “Maybe this recorded us,” says the neatly coiffed, rosy-cheeked man next to her.

“Aw, gee,” Esther replies.

The realisation came toward the end of a nearly threeminute video that has launched the retired Oregon couple to YouTube stardom. They had unwittingly captured their first attempt at learning how to work the webcam on a new laptop.

In the video, she plays the straight man as she tries to make a serious attempt at the request of their children and grandchildren. He’s bouncing in his seat next to her, making monkey faces.

Esther had bought a laptop late this summer. Already a Facebook user, she was asked by her family to try recording videos for the amusement of the grandchildren.

But their 21-year-old granddaughter, Mindy, saw the video’s potential. With their permission, she uploaded the file, dubbing it “Webcam 101 for Seniors.” By Thursday, it was nearing 3 million views on YouTube.

In mid-August, the couple sat in front of their laptop, fiddling with the controls of a video recording program. Somehow, they got the program running. Somehow, they pressed “record.”

Support for Premier McKeeva Bush’s proposed suspension and review of Cayman’s “rollover” policy is gathering no moss among the business community, who are looking forward to a stronger economy and greater employment opportunities.

Chairman Richard Coles of Cayman Finance, which represents the local financial-services industry and will participate in Mr Bush’s six-month policy review, said the move was long overdue.

“It will enable the government to review the impact of the policy,” he said. “It makes good economic sense to allow persons who may be imminently facing rollover to avoid being negatively impacted in the meantime.”

The premier announced the suspension in a 14 September Legislative Assembly session, saying that the seven-year “term limit” for thousands of work-permit holders -- who arrived in the wake of 2004’s Hurricane Ivan – would expire in the next 12 months, potentially damaging small businesses and the larger economy.

A review committee comprising the Chamber of Commerce, Cayman Finance, Mr Bush’s own previously appointed Immigration Review Team and as-yet-unnamed “others” will spend six months studying the rollover, recommending legislative changes to be effected in the next two years.

The proposals will go to Cabinet on Tuesday.

Governor Duncan Taylor Anthony Travers, longtime and outspoken defender of the industry, cautiously welcomed the review, which needed to address three issues.

“There must now be some recognition at the political level, of the substantial damage done both to the local economy and the financial services industry by the imposition of the rollover policy,” he said.

Mr Travers also called for better clarity and “new legislative procedures” to repair the damage done to global confidence in the financialservices industry.

“Thirdly,” he said, welcoming the recognition that action was required, but calling for a public-education effort, “it remains evident from the nature of public comment that there is widespread ignorance of the importance of this issue to the overall economy of the Cayman Islands, to job opportunities for Caymanians [and] to government and private-

Chamber of Commerce President James O”Neill welcomed the review and opportunity to sit on the committee: “The Chamber Council and membership has expressed concern about the term limit and work permit policies for some time.

In fact, immigration reform is among the main action items in the Future of Cayman strategic report. Any sensible proposal that can help to stimulate the economy should be considered at this time.”

H.E. Governor Duncan Taylor, who chairs Cabinet, expected Mr Bush’s proposals to be approved at the Tuesday gathering.

“Immigration is a devolved area of responsibility,” Mr Taylor said. “It is up to the local government to decide what immigration policies it wishes to pursue. If the proposal comes to Cabinet and is supported by Ministers, then it will be approved.”

Residents of West Bay have reacted with anger at the murder of Andrew Baptist – the second fatal shooting in as many days.

Henry Ormond Morgan – lifelong resident of the district and chairman of the West Bay Action committee said he has tried to speak to the RCIPS about the problems.

But he added: “We have spoken to the police and it has fallen on deaf ears.

“What you see now… remember the Oklahoma City bombing and Timothy McVeigh? The bomb was made of fertiliser and cow dung. Well, the police and other authorities are feeding that to us in small doses right now.“ Alice Mae Coe, head of the Concerned Citizens Group, said: “You can’t go out alone. It is shocking what is happening in our country.

“None of us would ever have believed this is Cayman. It’s totally opposite to what it used to be.

“It’s the mad rush to develop, develop, develop, yet the basic fabric of our society is being torn apart. We are obviously not doing something right.

“The old Cayman way was to put God first in our lives and the country was very different. You have to have strong families and the strength of the country is based on God-fearing people, but, like the rest of the world, we all have become materialistic, laying up our treasures on earth.

“There is a lot of frustration. We have people suffering and without jobs, and not caring. We have always had poor people, but back then people cared and they shared what they had, but we have become so materialistic.”

Speaking of the crime wave, Ms Coe said: “I don’t like it when people say it’s w there are no jobs. It is better to beg, to go down the street and ask people to give you something to eat.

“We have to create opportunities and find a new perspective. If I had a magic solution, I’d shout it from the rooftops.

“We are saddened at the loss of life. Each life is precious, and I think about the potential of our people.

Who knows what they could have become? We have got to get back on the right path”.

Police are looking at gangland retaliation in Thursday night’s West Bay murder of 24-year-old Andrew Baptist, in Sand Hole Road by two masked gunmen but have named no suspects nor made arrests.

The 9pm killing at 22 Sand Hole Road of father-of-two Mr Baptist, apparently chased by assailants from Super C’s Restaurant on Watercourse Road, may have been retaliation for the Tuesday murder of Robert Bush near West Bay’s Birch Tree Hill Road in the Logwood neighbourhood.

“There is clear evidence this is gang-related,” said RCIPS Chief Superintendent John Jones. “We are seeing evidence that Robert Bush’s murder was gang related, and there is evidence of a resumption of a feud between the Logwood and the Birch Tree Hill areas.

“Our worst fears have been realised with this second murder,” he said. “The people we were appealing to the other day are beyond appeal, and this leaves at least two families grief-stricken at this mindless violence.”

Detailing Thursday night’s events, Mr Jones said “at five minutes to 9PM, we received a report that a young man had been shot in the Sand Hole area.

“Mr Baptist was with a number of friends, sat in a yard. They were surprised by two masked gunmen who came from behind the house.

The victim and the people with him ran as soon as they saw them,” he said.

“It would appear the victim had been targeted, because he was fatally shot, several times. By the time emergency services arrived, he was dead.”

While saying that “a number of casings were found at the scene”, neither Mr Jones nor Detective Superintendent Marlon Bodden would say how many bullets had been fired or what kind of guns had been used, saying only Mr Baptist had been shot “in the head”.

Mr Bodden said that, since Tuesday’s Birch Tree Hill murder, “we have had a lot of evidence called in to us, explaining a lot of history that led up to Robert Bush’s death. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

“It is unfortunate that it took another life to get people to come forward,” he said. “I am certain that if they had brought this information forward before, Robert Bush would still be alive today – and we would not have had two murders in 24 hours.”

In contrast to their initial assessment of the Bush murder, both officers acknowledged that he had been assaulted by “a minimum” of two gunmen, firing a shotgun and a 9mm pistol.

“If you know something and you do not tell us, “ Mr Bodden said, appealing for information from the public, “then you have no one to blame but yourself.”

Asked what had triggered the conflict, Mr Jones said that a “relatively minor”

July incident at West Bay’s Club Inferno appeared to have been responsible, but said no one had been hurt, although Mr Bush had been charged with assault and a firearm had been present.

“What we are getting is a mixture,” said Mr Bodden. “You may have an element of drugs involved, but sometimes some will feel disrespected by others, although nothing really pronounced. A lot of it is, I would say, quite silly, quite juvenile. Girlfriends sometimes play a part.

“It is, in fact, important that mothers, grandmothers, and girlfriends appeal to these men, that enough is enough.”

Alerted to threats of weekend violence, both officers said the police “have contingencies in place, increased coverage and we will continue to do so.”

Two murders in two days was just too much for many to handle.

As the shocking news of yet another gangland execution reached the people of West Bay, it was clear emotions were running high.

As crowds gathered at the scene of this latest crime, some people began to faint.

One woman who hit the ground amid the mayhem on the street was the sister of Andrew Baptist, the latest murder victim.

The resolve and training of the RCIPS officers was intensely criticised, after a member of the crowd announced that they were not taking proper control of the situation.

“Worthless, good for nothing officers, only know how to drive around in their fancy cars and they are not doing a thing,” said an angry bystander.

Claims that the police were ineffective worsened after a stream of traffic was seen coming towards the site of the fainting victims.

The crowd briefly acted as police officers, directing the traffic away from the site of the oncoming ambulance, before the police took control.

The paramedics could clearly be seen resuscitating the slain resident’s sister.

One friend of Mr Baptist, who asked not to be named, said: “This really is bad. Just look how hard his mother tried with him.

“I used to see him going to school and at about that time he was fifteen, just finishing school. I think John Gray was the last school he attended.

“I believe he was raised on Birch Tree Hill Road, but moved to Boatswain Bay for about the last eight or ten years.

“I don’t know if he was in any gang because it would be hard to tell.

“Based on where he lived it would be hard to even tell which set of guys he would be linked with, because where he was living would fall right in the middle of two different communities.

“It’s really hard what is happening in Cayman right now. I can’t believe this is happening to this little country that we love so much.”

Texas execution halted amid Supreme Court review the fatal shootings of his ex-girlfriend and a man in her apartment in July 1995. His attorneys had asked both the Supreme Court and Texas Gov. Rick Perry to halt the execution because of a psychologist’s testimony that black people were more likely to commit violence. Buck’s guilt is not being questioned, but his lawyers contend the testimony unfairly influenced the jury and Buck should receive a new sentencing hearing.

The nation’s highest court, without extensive comment, said it would review an appeal related to that testimony. The decision meant Perry

did not have to act on a request from Buck’s lawyers that the governor use his authority to issue a one-time 30day reprieve.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A black man convicted of a double murder in Texas 16 years ago was at least temporarily spared from lethal injection when the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to review his lawyers’ claims that race played an improper role in his sentencing.

The court on Thursday halted the execution for Duane Buck, 48, two hours into a six-hour window when he could have been taken to the death chamber. Texas officials, however, did not move forward with the punishment while legal issues were pending.

Lawyers claim alleged IRA dissident was framed VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) — The Lithuanian lawyer for an Irishman accused of trying to purchase and smuggle weaponry for the Real IRA told a court Friday that Michael Campbell was a victim of entrapment orchestrated by Britain’s intelligence service.

Campbell, 39, was arrested in January 2008 after allegedly handing euro10,000 ($13,800) to an undercover Lithuanian agent posing as a weapons supplier.

The arrest was part of an international sting operation aimed at incapacitating the Real IRA, which

is regarded as a terrorist organization opposing British rule in Northern Ireland. It has claimed responsibility for a number of attacks in Northern Ireland, including the murder of two British soldiers in March.

In a closing argument before the Vilnius Regional Court, Campbell’s lawyer, Inga Botyriene, said that Campbell was provoked into buying the weapons and explosives by undercover agents of Britain’s top intelligence service.

“He was never involved in arms deals and would never go to Lithuania for such an affair if he had not been

provoked by secret agents. The entire affair was created and orchestrated

by Britain’s MI5, which worked together with Lithuania’s intelligence service,” Botyriene said.

Botyriene also said Campbell has never been a member of the Real IRA.

Paul McCartney, Nancy Shevell to wed in London LONDON (AP) — Sir Paul McCartney is set to tie the knot at the venue where he first married more than 40 years ago.

Officials said Friday that the former Beatle and fiancee Nancy Shevell have posted a notice of intention to marry at London’s Marylebone Register Office.

Westminster Council said the notice was posted Wednesday, meaning the couple could marry anytime after September 30. They have a year to hold the ceremony.

The document lists the musician under his full name James Paul McCartney and describes him as a “business executive.” It gives the couple’s address as McCartney’s London home.

Police Commissioner is seen on the steps outside of the Court Building. He is giving an interview to the press. He points the finger at the judge shouting with rage that it is a desperate day for justice.

We see police officers being issued with Tasers. They are smiling grimly. Screen shot of a Taser being fired at a man who collapses, writhing onto the floor. The police surround the man and the police fire their Tasers into the air in a triumphant salute.

The trailer ends with a black screen and a huge white question mark in the centre that slowly changes to red before disappearing into a pool of blood. An expressionless voice intones, “Can you guess what happens next? You will be shocked.”

Armed thieves strike at Tortuga Armed thieves struck in broad daylight – stealing cash from the Tortuga Liquor store.

Just before 5pm on Thursday two masked men armed with guns burst into the store on Pasadora Place, Smith Road.

After threatening staff, they grabbed the cash register and fled towards Windsor Park.

A spokeswoman for the RCIPS said: “Both men are described as light brown complexion, 6ft tall, wearing black hoodies, mask and black gloves.

Hurricane Maria drenches Newfoundland; tropical Atlantic and western Caribbean have no new developments

Once again, there are no new developments in the tropical Atlantic.

However a tropical disturbance was located to the southwest of the Cape Verde Islands near 35 W Longitude, but it was poorly organised and lacked deep convection. This will be an area to watch as it makes its way to the west as it is in an area with a somewhat favourable shear environment with a moist environment around it. There are also mixed forecasts as to whether or not this disturbance will develop at all, so keep your fingers crossed that it does not develop anytime soon.

In the western Caribbean, many of the global model guidance systems have changed their forecasts saying that there will be no development next week. However Rob Lightbown writes, “I think given the forecast pattern that the western Caribbean needs to be monitored for possible tropical development over the next 6 to 10 days. It’s interesting to note that the ensemble guidance members of the European and GFS models forecast lowering pressures in the western part of the Caribbean starting around Tuesday or Wednesday and continuing through next Sunday.”

Maria has been upgraded to a 80 mph Category 1 hurricane. She is tracking to the northeast at a forward

speed of 45 mph. Maria hit the extreme southeast of Newfoundland at roughly 2pm on Friday (16), drenching them with heavy rains and hurricane force winds. Some regions of Newfoundland experienced tropical storm force winds while Maria moved across the country. By Saturday (17) Maria is expected to have moved across Newfoundland and into the cooler waters of the North Atlantic.

The Miss Cayman contestants gave the public another preview of their modeling skills at Tiki Beach.

The ten contestants modelled accessories from Bedazzle Fashion while swimwear and other garments were seen from Sand Angels.

The girls modelled these items as another opportunity to put their newfound skills to the test before their big debut to fight for the crown.

Ms. Lynn Bodden, Committee Chair said: “These pre-pageant shows have given the girls total preparation for the pageant and helped to build their self esteem. Each of them has that “IT” factor to be the winner and to go on to the next Miss Universe pageant.”

Contestant Alyssa Christian, added: ”The pre-pageant settings have allowed me to become used to being in the public eye. I think I have been given total preparation for the pageant experience and it has helped me a lot.

Cassianne Lawrence, contestant also said: “These experiences have absolutely helped me to grow and have helped me to see what pageantry is all about.

Award-winning Gospel singing artist Lorna Eccleston, from George Town, first started singing gospel songs in church at the tender age of eight.

After singing secular reggae music from her native land she returned to gospel after rededicating her life to God, and that’s where she found her true voice.

“I started singing gospel again in 2005 when I entered the Cayman Islands Gospel Festival.

That’s when I gained the second place with the single, ‘Warning to Rebellious Nations.’

The idea for that song, which describes God’s judgment, came to Ms. Eccelston in an unusual way: “My inspiration for ‘Warning to Rebellious Nations’ came from a vision I received from the Lord. I was down in Prospect Drive beside a church walking along the side of the road, when balls of fire were falling from the sky.

“People were running to escape, then the fire started spreading, but I alone escaped the fire, standing right beside the McRuss Shop at Marina Drive,” she said.

Since her success with that song, Ms Eccelston has won many different awards, both for her songs, and for her performances.

“On the fourth of June, I won five different awards from the Cayman National Gospel Award event at the Triple C School.

“I received the award for number one lyrical content, number one single, number one album in the female artist category. I also won their Ambassador’s Award, also in the female category, because I’ve represented the Cayman Islands in different countries as a gospel artist. I also won the Caribbean Award for number one single and number one album,” Ms. Eccelston said.

“One of the greatest events that I have experienced is a flight with the Prime Minister of the Bahamas and some members of Parliament, which was a surprise trip in a private jet.”

Ms Eccelston’s first album, ‘Let God Arise’ contained 18 tracks, 16 of which she wrote herself.

“One song on that album, called ‘Matrimonial,’ I wrote for a friend who was getting married. Another track, ‘Show Love’ is based on how we should show love to each other and live with each other in peace and unity,” she said.

I am working on another album now, called ‘Foreclosure’. It is all about the ‘wrap-up time’ that is happening now, a time for us to wrap up our act and get in tune with God, with prayer and fasting and abiding by his words.

“I’ve done two music videos so far - Free the World and Revival in the East, which are singles.

While there is a need for continued vigilance, a Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) Disaster Response Team visiting Cayman this week said it found local cholerapreparedness to be “very good”.

Dr. Robert Lee, who led the threemember delegation, told Health Minister, the Hon. Mark Scotland, JP, “The Cayman surveillance system is unique in the Americas...I can’t think of any way to improve it.”

The Cayman visit was part of a project sponsored by the UK government’s Department for International Development (DFID), to assist overseas territories in their readiness for a cholera threat.

The visit of the team, including Dr. Frederique Marodon and Mr. Yvan Grayel of the DFID, was facilitated by Cayman’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kiran Kumar. In conclusion, they shared their findings with the Health Minister, as well as Chief Officer Jennifer Ahearn.

“The Cayman Islands has a low probability of the introduction

and a relatively low probability of transmission of cholera,” said Dr. Lee. He added, “It’s good to see confirmation that your systems are well-developed. In the event of a few cases, your hospital can manage them, as it is designed with great flexibility – which is also unique in the region.”

Cholera is primarily contracted by consuming contaminated drinking water or food, with the main symptoms being profuse watery diarrhea” and vomiting.

Having global experience, the team’s current assignment is in this region following the cholera outbreak in Haiti. That pandemic has resulted in over 400,000 cases and many deaths. While cases are now declining there, neighbouring Dominican Republic recently saw a spike in cholera following the summer rains.

The visitors toured the Cayman Islands Hospital, examined plans involving other agencies, and met with senior officials and Health Services Authority (HSA) staff members, including the Cholera Response

Team. The Cholera case management training was conducted for about 45 members of a multidisciplinary team.

The team confirmed that a good monitoring system in place, and that there is close collaboration with the Cayman Water Authority and the Department of Environmental Health.

Happy with the “validation that Cayman’s medical personnel are very motivated, trained, and familiar with dealing with such an emergency”, Dr. Marodon cautioned that management of water supplies and waste-water are key considerations in this disease.

The visitors offered advice on assessing the risks posed to residents with poor water supply, discharge and sanitation; as well as the need for closer monitoring of groundwater tables – where bacterial contamination can occur.

The past few weeks have been incredibly busy and amazingly fun.

The adventures began a few Saturdays ago with my daughter and I having a facial. This was part of her birthday present from June, but we finally found time for the appointment. It was the day of my birthday and lunch was planned with my family.

I had told my husband only days earlier that I did not want a party.

Mike replied saying, “What about your children? You know they will want to do something.” “Absolutely,” I agreed. “We can have lunch somewhere together. We can go to one of their houses or I will cook for everyone. There is nothing that I enjoy more than cooking for my family, but I do not want a party!”

So lunch was planned for a restaurant that served one of my favourite foods…Middle Eastern.

After the relaxing facials, Kristie and I headed to purchase some final touches for the birthday party of my number three grandson, Austin, whose celebration was that same night. The shopping center was in the same area as the restaurant.

I had bought clothes and make-up with me, to become more presentable than I had been for the facial. After walking around in 108 degree heat…a

change of clothes would have done very little to improve my demeanor, so Kristie and I walked straight to the restaurant. You guessed it…

“SURPRISE!!!” and it was a lovely surprise to share this day with many of my family and friends.

Then it was on to prepare for Austin’s party. It was a 1980’s theme complete with clothing, trivia and food of the era. The 80’s seemed like only yesterday to me, but for one born after the decade, it was history. We laughed for hours!

The next birthday was my husband’s and his son and wife, Dave and Kera, came to share it with him.

That party was at my eldest son’s in the Big Thicket of East Texas…a wonderful place filled with animals, trees, catfish pond, and open spaces.

We surprised Mike with a bar-b-que and another amazing day.

Then the four of us headed to San Antonio. I have lived in Texas my

entire life and know good Mexican food, but what we experienced for the next few days was the best I have ever had. Hopefully some new recipes will come from this trip. If you have a birthday party or bar-b-que to attend, this broccoli salad is a perfect dish to take.

Jamaican PM’s mother passes Enid Louise Golding, the mother of Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding, died this week at age 91.

Dr Trevor Golding, the eldest of her three children said his mother died from pneumonia.

An educator who taught at the elementary and high school levels, Enid Golding was the widow of Tacius Golding, a member of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and former speaker of the House of Representatives.

Trevor Golding remembered his mother as an “unsung hero” and a “genius at parenting”.

He added: “Because my father

was in politics, he was always on the hustings. She had to nurture myself and my brothers by herself.

She was a great motivator and disciplinarian.”

The governing JLP, which Prime Minister Golding leads, expressed condolences to his family in a statement. The release hailed its matriarch as a “strong, benevolent educator and role model”.

Portia Simpson Miller, leader of the Opposition People’s National Party, said in a statement that she had spoken to the prime minister and conveyed condolences on behalf of her party.

Born Enid Bent in Southfield, St Elizabeth, Enid Golding was a graduate of the Shortwood Teachers’ College in St Andrew. Her first three teaching assignments were Smithfield, Ginger Ridge and Watermount elementary schools. While teaching at Ginger Ridge, she met Tacius Golding, who was the school headmaster.

They married in 1943 and had three sons: Trevor, Orette Bruce and Douglas Anthony. A daughter died in infancy.

The textbooks were on Caribbean geography and history and were used for several years as part of the high-school curriculum.

Enid Louise Golding is also survived by eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Jamaica: Gov’t to sign anti-crime pacts with Cuba KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Jamaica’s top security official announced Tuesday that he will lead a delegation to Cuba this week to sign agreements strengthening cooperation against drug trafficking and other crimes.

Security Minister Dwight Nelson said the pacts are intended to increase intelligence sharing about the “movement of guns and drugs and the groups involved in their movement between the two countries.”

Jamaica is the Caribbean’s largest source of marijuana for the U.S. and a

transshipment point for cocaine from South America to North America and Europe. The island’s gun-smuggling networks are also a long-standing security concern.

Nelson said that although the two Caribbean neighbors have collaborated since 2006 in tracking and capturing Jamaican traffickers, a formal relationship is likely to improve the flow of information.

A leaked U.S. diplomatic memo released by WikiLeaks late last year portrayed Jamaican anti-drug officers as being so unresponsive that more than a dozen Cuban

Anne now unfolded her plans, for she had been obliged to invent plans: necessity forced her forward.

“We must all come to you for a time, dear Miss Lois; but I am young and strong, and I can work. I wish to educate the boys, as father would have wished them educated. Do you ask what I can do? I think—that is, I hope—that I can teach.” Then, in a lower voice, she added, “I promised father that I would do all I could for the children, and I shall keep my promise.”

Miss Lois’s eyes filled with tears. But the effect of the loving emotion was only to redden the lids, and make the orbs beneath look smaller and more unbeautiful than before.

“I hope not,” said the girl, her voice trembling a little; for her sorrow was still very near the surface. “She is old now, and perhaps more gentle.

At any rate, she is my only living relative, and to her I must appeal.”

“She was living last year, for father spoke of her.”

“I did not know he ever spoke of her.”

“Only in answer to my questions; for I had found her address, written in mother’s handwriting, in an old note-book.

She brought up my mother, you know, and was once very fond of her.”

“So fond of her that she killed her. If poor Alida had not had that strain upon her, she might have been alive at this day,” said Miss Lois.

Anne’s self-control left her now, and she began to sob like a child.

“Do not make it harder for me than it is,” she said, amid her tears. “I must ask her; and if she should consent to help me, it will be grief enough to leave you all, without these cruel memories added. She is old: who knows but that she may be longing to repair the harm she did?”

“Can the leopard change his spots?” said Miss Lois, sternly. “But what do you mean by leaving us all?

What do you intend to do?”

“I intend to ask her either to use her influence in obtaining a teacher’s place for me immediately, or if I am not, in her opinion, qualified, to give me the proper masters for one year.

I would study very hard; she would not be burdened with me long.”

“And the proper masters are not here, of course?”

“No; at the East.”

Miss Lois stopped in the middle of a round, took off her spectacles, rolled up her knitting-work slowly and tightly as though it was never to be unrolled again, and pinned it together with decision; she was pinning in also a vast resolution.

Then she looked at Anne in silence for several minutes; saw the teardimmed eyes and tired, anxious face, the appealing glance of William Douglas’s child.

One of the most frequently asked questions related to television is, “Where’s the remote?” When the first simple television (televisores) was built in 1928, it did not come with a remote. The entire wonder consisted of a disk, a light (which tended to make the images orange in appearance) and a moderate need for electricity.

Television actually started in the late 1800’s when a German student, Paul Gottlieb Nipkow, developed the first ever-mechanical module of television. He succeeded in sending images through wires with the help of a rotating metal disk. This technology was called the ‘electric telescope’ that had 18 lines of resolution.

Around 1907, two separate inventors, A.A. Campbell-Swinton from England and Russian scientist Boris Rosing, used the cathode ray tube in addition to the mechanical scanner system, to create a new television system.

From the experiments of Nipkow and Rosing, two types of television systems came into existence: mechanical television and electronic television.

In 1923, an American inventor called Charles Jenkins used the disk idea of Nipkow to invent the first ever practical mechanical television system. By 1931, his Radiovisor Model 100 was being sold in a complete kit as a mechanical television.

In 1926, just a little after Jenkins, a British inventor known as John Logie Baird, was the first person to have succeeded in transmitting moving pictures through the mechanical disk system started by Nipkow. He also started the first ever TV studio.

From 1926 till 1931, the mechanical television system saw many innovations. Although the discoveries of these men in the department of mechanical television were very innovative, by 1934, all television systems had converted into the electronic system, which is what is being used even today.

inches and generally was mounted in a much larger cabinet. By the late 1930’s televisions were made by several manufacturers in the United States and throughout Europe and the Soviet Union.

World War II slowed recreational television progress while turning that technology to the necessary military communications.

Many communication devices were made accessible using television cable.

Unlike the Viet Nam War, civilians were not able to watch the battles that had been fought and radio was still highly sought for news and entertainment.

By 1945, many American families believed they had suffered enough hardship from the war and rewarded themselves with televisions. The pictures were of a better quality than in earlier televisions and only in black and white. Programming other than news had caught on and gradually, game shows, sports and other programmes of interest were available.

Technically, the ability to produce programs in colour occurred in the late 1940’s, however it was in the mid 1960’s that major broadcasters began to produce their programming in colour. Early coloured televisions did not provide exact colour replication.

One often noticed unnatural tint that was correctable by manipulating the ‘tint’ dial on the television.

For those of us old enough to remember the assignation of John F. Kennedy, we will also remember his lying in state and his funeral and burial all shown on major broadcast stations. This was the first major event in American history that could

be viewed by people all across the United States on television. Despite miles of separation, people in the USA felt more connected to one another because of this new technology.

The 1970’s brought about the greatest surge of television purchases.

Major appliance stores (Sears and others) had banks of televisions on display. Daytime television and ‘Soap Operas’ became favouites of many stay at home mothers. Game shows became more plentiful as did movies, which introduced us to favourites such as John Wayne, Robert Young, ‘Beaver Cleaver’, and many, many more. These were idyllic families, devoid of abuse, less than charitable language, arguments, and other behaviors evidenced in today’s homes and societies. Television commercials changed the ‘tools’ of childhood which previously had been invented and make believe to Barbie and Ken dolls, talking bears, more sophisticated bicycles and wagons and the like.

Satellites influenced further changes in television in the mid 1980’s. Pay for view programming became possible through the encryption of programming and transmitting via cable and only to viewers who had the additional equipment to view such programmes.

Today, digital and satellite television deliver the clearest images, including ‘crystal-clear’ HD (High Definition), to the viewer with incredible colour reproduction and provide several hundred channels from which to choose. Televisions have grown from 6x8 picture tubes in huge cabinets to ultra slim (2.2in.) flat panel instruments ranging from 26in to 63in (and even bigger) sitting atop pedestals or fastened against a wall of your house.

Large screen television gives the appearance of football players kicking off in one’s living room and monster trucks driving directly at the viewer, especially as we now have 3D television!

Television today may even be accessed from one’s computer as well as by cell phone, smart phone, ‘iPad’, etc. What will be next? ‘Smellyvision’?

iWoman looks at gender discrimination today with views from Ms. Tammy Ebanks of the Ministry of Community Affairs, Gender and Housing.

Gender is often confused with sex, the two words are related but have different meanings.

We are born male or female but we learn to become woman or man.

Male and female is our biological sex while man or woman describes our gender.

The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) is the only international human rights treaty left to be signed by the Cayman Islands and since the bill being passed we will now be able to sign.

The bill incorporates protection from gender discrimination in employment, training and hiring for

both sexes.

Ms. Ebanks said: “This is a new way of thinking, it’s a shift in thinking and obviously with that is going to come change.

“Change in how we go about business, doing business and with that comes challenges.”

Ms. Ebanks went on to say what the gender bill will provide and how it will help the community as well as its background.

She added: “The gender equality bill is going to provide protection from gender discrimination and employment training and hiring.

“Promoting equal pay for equal work also the issue of sexual harassment is in there because that would be a form of sex discrimination.

“It’s calling for equal treatment in the provision of good services and facilities as well.

“The bill promotes the spirit of CEDAW which is supporting the principle of equality between men

and women.”

When asked about the current situation on gender affairs Ms. Ebanks was able to shed some light.

“We know of things on an anecdotal level but we don’t have a mechanism in place to track it,” she said.

“We hear of women being asked during hiring processes questions like, what are your pregnancy plans or your child care arrangements, the point here is would they have asked that of a man, probably not because their expectation is that because you’re a woman your going to be taking care of the kids.

Ms. Ebanks added that within the gender bill, there is provision to set up a gender equality tribunal that would hear all of the claims that are covered by this law.

The Gender Equality Bill was put forward to the Legislative Assembly and passed on September 14th 2011.

APPLY SUNSCREEN PROPERLY.

The end of the school year is here and savvy moms and dads by now have made all the arrangements for summer.

Summer camps and leisurely days at the pool or beach are just a few of the summer rituals for many families.

However if you're tempted to let your child play outdoors for even a few minutes without proper sun protection, you might want to think twice.

Adolescence and childhood are critical periods during which exposure to UV radiation is more likely to contribute to skin cancer in later life. Children with fair skin, blond or red hair and blue or green eyes are at the highest risk of sunburn.

But darker-skinned children also need sun protection. With this in mind, it’s important that parents teach their children how to enjoy fun in the sun safely.

LIMIT OUTDOOR PLAYTIME BETWEEN 10A.M. AND 4P.M.

Apply a thick, even coat to all exposed areas 20 - 30 minutes before your child goes out in the sun. Choose a sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher. Make sure it's labeled "broad spectrum," which means it blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight. For your little ones, sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide should be selected as these compounds are less irritating than others. Sunscreen sticks are best for the face because they are sweat proof and less likely to drip. Don't forget nose, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck; lips can also burn, so apply a lip balm with SPF protection. Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours, or after sweating or swimming.

COVER FROM HEAD TO TOE. Wearing protective clothing and hats is one of the primary ways of warding off UV damage. When wet, light coloured clothing transmits just as much sunlight as bare skin. Keep your kids covered with dark colours, long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. And don't forget the accessories: sunglasses with UV protection to guard against burned corneas, and hats to prevent sunburned scalps and faces.

Protective clothing, hats with wide brims, and sunglasses are just as important for babies. At the beach, bring along a large umbrella.

Parents, you are the best teacher by practicing sun safety yourself. If your child sees you following sun safety rules, he'll take them for granted and follow suit. Teach every member of the family how to protect their skin and eyes. With proper supervision, children can learn to protect themselves and enjoy summer fun without sacrificing the health of their skin.

Avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun's rays are at their strongest. Even on cloudy or cooler days, ultraviolet (UV) rays remain strong. Shady spots can be just as tricky because of reflected light. If your child is playing outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply ample sunscreen.

WATCH OUT FOR MEDICATIONS. Some medications increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, so make sure to ask your doctor whether your child may be at risk. Prescription antibiotics and acne medications are the most notorious culprits, but when in doubt, ask.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says it would be wrong to dismiss Chelsea’s chances of winning the Premier League this season.

United, along with local rivals Manchester City, hold a 100% record after four games and meet Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday.

“Chelsea will be there at the end of the season,” Ferguson said.

“The Manchester teams are enjoying the publicity but Chelsea are lurking and will enjoy not being in the spotlight.”

The Blues have made an unbeaten start to the campaign and lie third in the table, two points behind United and City.

Kenny Dalglish is happy with Liverpool’s start to the season

David DeJesus hit a three-run homer in the first, Brandon McCarthy pitched seven strong innings and the Oakland Athletics snapped Detroit’s longest winning streak in 77 years with a 6-1 victory on Thursday night, delaying the Tigers chance to clinch the AL Central Division title.

“We have 12 games left to win it,” Tigers starter Max Scherzer said. “You have to like our chances. But we haven’t won anything yet.”

Leyland will get a new change of underwear when his team goes for their first outright title since 1987 on Friday night. He said before the game that he had not changed (nor washed) his underwear during the 12game winning streak.

“It wasn’t anything we did or didn’t do,” Leyland said. “We just got beat. We were ready to play but their pitcher has figured out the art of pitching.

Give him all the credit.”

The Tigers have not finished first since taking the AL East nearly a quarter-century ago.

They only playoff appearance since then came in 2006, when they won the wild card.

England manager Martin Johnson has defended his players after some were pictured drinking following the 13-9 win over Argentina.

The Sun newspaper in the UK featured photos of captain Mike Tindall, Chris Ashton, Toby Flood and Dylan Hartley in a bar in Queenstown.

“You have got to relieve the pressure and let off steam at the right time,” said Johnson. “It was a good idea.

“I don’t want to have to lock people away and not let them out.”

England had already come in for criticism when several players used a day off on Monday to go bungee jumping and white-water rafting, a decision which Johnson also moved to defend.

The Sun then printed pictures taken on Sunday of Tindall, Ashton, Flood and Hartley, as well as making allegations about Tindall’s conduct.

But Johnson dismissed the controversy, wisecracking “Rugby player drinks beer, shocker.

“I don’t feel my trust has been betrayed. We knew they were going out to have a few beers.

“I had no problem with them doing that. We all know when you have a rugby team that part of it is the bonding off the field.

“If there is a complaint and someone says one of your players has acted inappropriately then we will act on it.”

Back on the pitch England face World Cup minnows Georgia in Dunedin on Sunday.

But first Ireland take on a tougher challenge Saturday when they face Australia in Auckland.

Ireland lock Paul O’Connell accepts they are firm underdogs.

He said: “On form Australia are a long way ahead of us at the moment.

They have threats all over the field and we have to starve them of quality ball.

“For us to win, we need a massive performance. In Irish teams, when our emotion and passion is high, we’re a better side.

“Hopefully that will be there in abundance on Saturday. When we put it together for 80 minutes, we are an excellent side that can compete with anyone.”

Wales also play Saturday, against Somoa in Hamilton.
