The fiancé of pregnant mom of two, Karen Edwards, yesterday revealed he cannot bring himself to tell their son his mother will never come home. Matthew Whittaker has spoken for the first time since the 24-yearold love of his life was killed in a car crash along with his unborn son. And, fighting back the tears, he pledged to change his life around for the good of their two children, Joshua 3, and 1-year-old Lashaé. Mr Whittaker, 21, said: “Joshua keeps asking for her but I can’t bare to tell him that she’s gone. “I will change my life and I can say I did it and I know she will be proud of me and be proud of our kids.” Karen, who was just days away from giving birth to their third child, died after she was flung from the wreckage of a car in East End on Sunday night. The driver of the car, who has been air-lifted to Miami for emergency treatment, is waiting

Teenagers, some of whom were learning how to lead bible camps, operated hand puppets in the story about Jeremiah the prophet.

Christopher Tobutt christopher.tobutt@ieyenews.com

The Anglican Vacation Bible Camp at St George’s Anglican Church is where kids have fun learning how to “Speak up and speak out for God,” – the theme of the week-long camp. “We are focusing on the prophets of the Old Testament who did that in their time, and the children are learning how to speak up and speak out for God in their own situations,” said Sister Molly Walton, who is looking after the kids during the week-long camp. The kids at the camp were hearing

bible stories and then having fun acting them out in drama skits. “Yesterday we did the story of Elijah proving who is the real God, and today we are doing the prophet Jeremiah through puppet theatre,” Ms Walton said. Behind a black piece of cloth, some of the older children were getting ready to operate the hand puppets that told the story of Jeremiah, as the younger ones were eagerly waiting for the show to begin. The children also played football outside, and a special game called “Integrity” inside the church hall.

“Integrity is a game where all the children in the room have to get into groups of a specific number, such as three, two or four. The last one to sit down, making a number that is too big is ‘out,’ but nobody tells them they are out – it us up to their own honesty and integrity,” Sister Walton said. “Nine of the teenagers here are being trained as camp councilors. They will be able to lead their own bible camps,” she added. The children were also making life-sized pictures of the Old Testament profits, along with art and craft items.

iStrange Twin makes $50k hockey shot FARIBAULT, Minn. (AP) — An 11-year-old Minnesota boy has made an astounding hockey shot — sending a puck into a tiny hole 89 feet away. The shot at a charity game should be worth $50,000, but there’s one problem: Nate Smith was standing in for his identical twin, Nick. Nick Smith says he was outside when his ticket was drawn to make the shot Thursday at the charity game in Faribault (FAIR’boh). So, his brother stepped in. Nate Smith says he was “stunned” when the puck went in. Their father told organizers Nate, not Nick, made the shot. Pat Smith says honesty is the best policy. The general manager of the company that insured the raffle says processing claims takes about three weeks and he can’t make a decision on payment until he’s done.

STOCKHOLM (AP) — A Swedish real estate agent has an unusual piece of property up for sale: a five-bedroom house, complete with medieval tomb and skeleton in the cellar. The central Visby town house on the Baltic Sea island of Gotland was built in 1750 on the foundations of a Russian church. The kitchen lies on the presbytery, and the tomb containing the skeleton — visible through a glass panel — is in the cellar. The real estate agency’s owner Leif Bertwig says there is no reason to be afraid as the skeleton “lies in consecrated soil and rests in peace.” Bertwig said Wednesday the remains likely belong to a Russian man who died some 800 years ago. The starting price for the house — all included — is 4.1 million kronor ($640,000).

Coke wiretaps to be released Tad Stoner

tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

Jamaica’s supreme court yesterday ordered authorities to give the legal team of alleged drug lord Christopher “Dudus” Coke the contents of years of police wiretaps -- and pay the costs of the court action. Justice Patrick Brooks told Jamaica’s Attorney General Dorothey Lightbourne to pass the information to Mr Coke’s lawyers, including former Cayman Islands Grand Court Justice Priya Levers, who called the ruling a matter of “huge principle”. “This shows a person is entitled to information about what is alleged against him,” Ms Levers told iNews. “We also got costs in the matter,” she said, “which I think is unusual, and I would think are substantial. Especially as [Mr Coke ] is not in the jurisdiction, the judge says he was entitled to the information all along.” In the ruling, covering wiretaps on Mr Coke’s telephone since 2004, Justice Brooks cited Jamaica’s constitution, saying, “Every person charged with an offence shall be afforded adequate facilities for the preparation of his defence. The fact that Mr Coke is facing prosecution outside of Jamaica should not, by itself, prevent him being allowed access to information which may assist his defence.“ Jamaica extradited Mr Coke, 42, to New York from Kingston in June 2010, on multiple charges of running drugs and guns into the United States. He is in custody in New York City, pending a 12 September hearing, likely to rely heavily on the wiretaps, in Manhattan’s Southern District court. Calling the case “unusual”, Justice Brooks said Mr Coke’s motion had not been opposed by the AttorneyGeneral, but cautioned that the names of those who had authorised the taps and the telephone numbers of those involved should not be revealed. Ms Levers, employed by defence attorney Stephen Rosen as a consultant on Jamaican law, said the Kingston government had to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Christopher “Dudus” Coke seven days to hand over transcripts, “sufficient time to prepare a defence,” she said. Ms Levers, a lawyer and judge during a 25-year residence in Jamaica, left the Cayman Islands Grand Court in 2010, but has continued practice as a legal consultant. Employed last spring by Mr Rosen to aid in Mr Coke’s defence, she planned the courtroom challenge to the wiretaps. “Mr Coke had been in custody for almost a year, but nothing had been done,” she said. “The family contacted me because of my knowledge and experience, and after I became consultant, I thought about making the application.” While not appearing herself in court, Ms Levers co-counsel argued the case before Justice Brooks. On 8 July, Mr Rosen appeared in Manhattan court, arguing that wiretap evidence should be quashed

because Jamaica authorities never told the Kingston court that international drug enforcement officials from the US would be party to the information, violating the Interception of Communications Act. Judgement is still pending on the motion. Despite repeated efforts, Mr Rosen could not be contacted.

Weather Report Tropical wave (Invest 93L) is located over the central Caribbean as of yesterday morning and appears to be getting organised slowly. Satellite imagery yesterday morning showed some shower and thunderstorm activity. Tropical storm experts say it is possible that we will see slow development over the next couple of days since 93L is in a low shear & moist environment with very warm ocean temperatures. During this week, 93L should slow down in forward speed when it gets past Jamaica on Thursday and Friday. This is when it is expected to organise into a tropical depression or a tropical storm. Track wise, a general westward course is expected for the rest of this week and it should keep well south of Grand Cayman. It should track inland into southern Belize on Saturday night as a tropical depression or a weak tropical storm. Behind Invest 93L is a wave with heavy thunderstorms that could pose a threat to many islands in the Caribbean region, including us. The wave is expected to develop into a tropical depression sometime between Friday and Sunday. A west-northwest track is predicted and we should monitor the path of the wave closely.

Father tired of false Kerran claims Kevin Creary kevin.creary@ieyenews.com

The father of missing Kerran Baker says he’s becoming emotionally drained because of the amount of calls he’s receiving claiming she has been found. Wilmot Anthony revealed he almost threw his phone away because he was called that often. Yesterday, Mr Anthony, his wife Sandra and daughter Toney-Ann, made a fresh appeal to the public to help find Kerran. They say the pressures are taking a significant toll on their health, and that they desperately need to get answers. According to Kerran’s father, Mr. Wilmot Anthony, the family did not intend to stay here for as long as two weeks, but are determined to stay until they get some answers. “It is getting very much harder to deal with. We are getting drained out. We did not intend to stay for two weeks. We are praying to get closure on this, it is draining us out.” According to Mr. Anthony, a combination of anxiety and nervousness, currently being experienced by his family, is further

compounded by people calling with rumours that his daughter has been found. He said: “I almost flung my phone away on Wednesday because everybody tends to be calling claiming that my daughter has been found. “Sometimes just when you relax the calls come again. And then everybody starts to call from Jamaica and from here on, it just hurts your brain.” During a police press conference, the determined family members say they have no intention of leaving without getting answers about Kerran. In renewing her appeal for public cooperation, Kerran’s mother, Mrs. Sandra Anthony, and her sister, Toney-Ann Anthony, says she was a very big user of Facebook and BBM messaging, and there are many contacts from both social networks which have disappointingly still not come forward. Toney-Ann said: “I am pleading to anyone with information to please come forward, because I know Kerran is a heavy BBM and Facebook user. Kerran’s mother said, “I am here again appealing to the people of the

I am very proud to announce that from yesterday, our newspaper went from 28 pages to 32 pages and it’s permanent! From now on only eight pages will be in black and white. We are now publishing iNews Cayman with 24 pages in full colour. We are the only print newspaper to boast this. We have only been able to achieve this milestone in such a short time (15 weeks and three days) because of your support and our advertisers. We have had a wonderful four weeks advertising wise and our excellent sales team have reported that all our ‘old’ customers have renewed with even more advertising and a host of new clients have come on board. This has made it possible to make our newspaper even better. All the outlets that sell iNews report increasing sales and have asked for more copies to be delivered. Misty the Malinois gets her man

The RCIPS Belgian Malinois dogs with officers during a training exercise Misty, one of the new Belgian Malinois dogs who make up the RCIPS K-9 Unit, brought a violent situation to a successful conclusion on Friday afternoon. Around 4.15 pm on Friday 12 August, police officers were called to a domestic incident at a house in Palm Dale Drive, George Town. On arrival, officers were advised

that a man had smashed up property within the house and had threatened his wife. The woman was not injured in the incident, but her husband refused to come to the door of the house when instructed to do so by officers. It was not clear to officers where the man was within the home and, as such ,the decision was taken to deploy Misty to search for him.

Misty quickly found her man hiding behind a door. On coming face to face with the Malinois, the suspect immediately gave himself up and complied with the instructions of the officers to leave the house. He was arrested on suspicion of threatening violence and insulting the modesty of a woman.

Arrest during Pope’s spanish visit MADRID (AP) — A young chemistry student working as a volunteer to prepare a visit by the Pope to Madrid has been arrested on suspicion of planning a gas attack targeting protesters opposed to the pontiff’s stay, officials said Wednesday. Pope Benedict XVI is due to arrive Thursday for a nearly four-day visit to celebrate World Youth Day, and a protest march was scheduled for Wednesday evening in Madrid. A police official said the suspect arrested in Madrid on Tuesday is a 24-year-old Mexican student specializing in organic chemistry. She would not say whether investigators believe the man was actually capable

of carrying out a gas attack, and did not know if the man actually had chemicals for one. He was arrested at a Madrid convention center where the hundreds of thousands of pilgrims coming to town for the papal visit are supposed to pick up their accreditation, the police official said on condition of anonymity in line with the department’s rules. An official with the visit’s organizing committee said the Mexican was a volunteer working to help deal with the massive flow of people coming to Madrid. The official would not give her name, citing the church-run committee’s policy.

Stolen Rembrandt too hot to handle MARINA DEL REY, Calif. (AP) — A stolen Rembrandt sketch was too hot to handle for thieves, and even the detective who held the 17th century artwork in white-gloved hands admitted he was nervous. After all, it was only days earlier that the 350-year-old artwork worth $250,000 was swiped from the lobby of a seaside hotel. The 11-by-6-inch pen-and-ink drawing was found in an unlocked public area of an Encino church Monday evening after a caller recognized it from news accounts of its weekend theft, said Los Angeles County

sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore. It was verified as being the stolen piece shortly after midnight, he said. However, experts will be asked to authenticate the work as a Rembrandt, and until then it will remain in an evidence locker, Whitmore said. “It’s going to stay under lock and key until the detectives determine where to send it next,” he said. The frame holding it will be fingerprinted and investigators will try to determine whether the church has any surveillance video, detective Clarence Williams said. The Rembrandt was snatched from an

easel on Saturday during a private art display in the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Marina del Rey.

Tobacco companies fight to stop warnings COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Tobacco companies want a judge to put a stop to new graphic cigarette labels that include the sewn-up corpse of a smoker and pictures of diseased lungs, saying they unfairly urge adults to shun their legal products and will cost millions to produce. Four of the five largest U.S. tobacco companies sued the federal government Tuesday, saying the warnings violate their free speech rights. “Never before in the United States have producers of a lawful product been required to use their own packaging and advertising to convey to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

an emotionally-charged government message urging adult consumers to shun their products,” the companies wrote in the lawsuit filed in federal court in Washington. The companies, led by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Lorillard Tobacco Co., said the warnings no longer simply convey facts to allow people to make a decision on whether to smoke. They instead force them to put government anti-smoking advocacy more prominently on their packs than their own brands, the companies say. They want a judge to stop the labels. The FDA refused to comment, saying

the agency does not discuss pending litigation. But when she announced the new labels in June, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius called them frank and honest warnings about the dangers of smoking.

Artist in residence programme returns The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands’ (NGCI) artist-in-residence programme and exhibition ‘A Day in the Life’ returns on the 22nd August for the fourth consecutive year and will boast the works of three local artists. This year’s select three are Wray Banker, founder of the Native Sons group and a wellloved veteran of the Caymanian art scene having exhibited widely on the island and abroad; Artist, Poet and Performer Nasaria SuckooChollette, also a ‘Native Son’ and widely acknowledged as one of the country’s finest talents to have emerged in recent years; and KerriAnne Chisholm, a young Caymanian artist currently studying fine art in Oxford, UK.

Nasaria Suckoo-Chollette The concept behind this unusual exhibition is modelled on a traditional artist-in-residency programme. The artists will move into their spaces at the National Gallery and transform them into their personal studios, working on-site in the public eye for ten days. ‘A Day in the Life IV’ aims to allow the artists the freedom to explore and experiment with their art, without the pressures of producing commercially viable work. The programme follows a ‘no rules’ policy offering the artists the opportunity to move outside of their individual comfort zones. The residency will culminate with the artists each curating an individual exhibition in which they will to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

display the works created during the two week residency. The trio of exhibitions are set for an official public opening on Monday 5th September at 9:00am. Working in different mediums such as photography, graphic design, acrylic painting and mixed media, selection of artists for this years programme was made due to the diversity of their portfolios which will ensure wide scope in the final exhibitions provide insight into the differing art forms available in our islands. Mona Watler, Communications and Marketing Manager for the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands invites the public to visit the gallery throughout the residency, she says “Come out to chat with these talented artists and find out what they have in store for all of us. I encourage everyone to keep coming throughout the two weeks to see how they develop those ideas.” The official ‘Meet and Greet’ event will be held on Monday 22nd August at the National Gallery in Harbour Place at 6:00pm. For more information on this programme or to book a group or school tour, call 945-8111. Vatican releases internal files on alleged abuser

One Native’s Son II Caymanite, Art Exhibition & Sale • Sculptures • Paintings • Wall Art • Functional Art • Mosaics • Jewellery …and more

6 – 31 August 2011

VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican, reeling from unprecedented criticism over its handling of sexual abuse cases in Ireland, took a pre-emptive strike Wednesday and published some internal files about a priest accused of molesting youngsters in Ireland and the U.S. The files published on the website of Vatican Radio represent a small, selective part of the documentation the Holy See must turn over to U.S. lawyers representing a man who says he was abused by the late Rev. Andrew Ronan. The man, known in court papers as John V. Doe, is seeking to hold the Vatican liable for the abuse. A federal judge in Portland, Oregon, ordered the Vatican to respond to certain requests for information from Doe’s lawyers by Friday, the first time the Holy See has been forced to turn over documentation in a sex abuse case. The partial documentation released Wednesday includes the 1966 case file with Ronan’s request to be laicized, or removed from the clerical state, after his superiors learned of accusations that he had molested minors in Ireland.

14

The Vatican said the files, a few dozen pages, some handwritten and culled from its internal books, represented the full, known documentation held in the Vatican about Ronan. Assuming it’s complete, the relatively small amount of documentation appears to bolster the Vatican’s contention that Ronan’s crimes were unknown to the Vatican until 1966, when it learned of the accusations and after the abuse against Doe occurred. The Vatican’s decision to publish some of the discovery documentation on its website marked an unusual attempt at some transparency, particularly given the sensitivity surrounding internal personnel files of accused priests. Victims groups have long denounced the secrecy with which the Vatican handles abuse cases and demanded the files of known abusers be released. But it comes amid unprecedented criticism of the Vatican’s handling of sex abuse cases in Ireland, and as it still seeks to recover from the fallout over the abuse scandal that erupted last year. Thousands of people in Europe and elsewhere reported they were raped and

molested by priests as children while bishops covered up the crimes and the Vatican turned a blind eye. Last month, an independent report into the Irish diocese of Cloyne accused the Vatican of sabotaging efforts by Irish Catholic bishops to report clerical sex abuse cases to police. The accusations prompted Irish lawmakers to make an unprecedented denunciation of the Holy See’s influence in the predominantly Catholic country, with heated words in particular from Prime Minister Enda Kenny. In a statement accompanying the document release Wednesday, Vatican attorney Jeffrey Lena said the Vatican’s documentation should help “calm down those people who are too quick to make sensational and unfair comments without taking the time to get an adequate understanding of the facts” — an apparent reference to Kenny’s denunciation. The Vatican recalled its ambassador to Ireland over the ruckus to help prepare an official response, which is expected in the coming weeks. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

The competition in the social media and internet communications market is heating up as Facebook implements video calling, powered by Skype, in response to Google’s release of Google+. Facebook, the social media giant who has 750 million active users sharing 4 billion items every day, was pressed to release a video calling feature. By Facebook collaborating with Skype and their 170 million users, together they can tackle their competition Google, ensure Facebook users are engaged, and open up new market opportunities for Skype. According to feedback, potential Skype users are most commonly deterred by the requirement to set up an account in order to avail of the service. In response, Facebook has linked Skype directly into the website and by simply clicking a button you can place a call. They emphasize that you do not need to create an account, just download a video plug-in the first time you place a call and after that, you can be connected with friends via video calling. Initially, Facebook’s voice calls will be limited to one-to-one which is lagging behind Google+ which has the capability for video conferencing for up to 10 people. On the other hand, Google+ is currently only available on an invitation basis which could hurt its potential. Both of these competitors are working hard to secure their place in the market and release the latest and greatest features.

On endless ice, searching for clues to our future

ON JAKOBSHAVN GLACIER, Greenland (AP) — The pilot eased his five-ton helicopter toward the glacier’s rumpled surface, aiming for the lightest of setdowns atop one of the fastest-flowing ice streams on Earth. David Holland’s voice suddenly broke in on the intercom. “Carl doesn’t like this!” the scientist shouted. “Carl says it’s snow bridges!” — drifts that can hide a deep crevasse. The chopper pulled up sharply and veered off over the chaotic icescape of white knobs and pinnacles and bluish glints of meltwater, on to another, safer landing spot where Carl Gladish, Holland’s lanky, ponytailed assistant, stepped cautiously off the skid and onto the ice, under the thudding rotor blades, to swiftly carry out his assigned task. It was one of eight 2-minute touchdowns on which the New York University research team positioned instruments to measure

to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

the movement and internal cracking of Jakobshavn Glacier, a risky operation meant to shed light on one more tiny piece of the giant puzzle called Greenland. Other scientists elsewhere were working on their own pieces, on demanding and often dangerous missions, sometimes in subfreezing temperatures and high winds, sleeping in tents on the ice, isolated for weeks at a time, linked tenuously by satellite phone. On this same July day, Alun Hubbard was on a solitary trek to the north coast’s spectacular, remote Petermann Glacier. Liz Morris was in the first hours of a monthlong research traverse along the hump of Greenland’s vast, 3-kilometerthick (2-mile-thick) ice sheet. Asa Rennermalm and her colleagues, at the ice’s western fringe, were in their fourth summer of meticulous, tedious sampling of the meltwater flow from the interior. Scattered across the world’s

largest island, as big as Alaska and California combined and 80 percent covered by ice, small bands of specialists tended to GPS sites and automatic weather stations, drilled down into the island’s frozen cap, and analyzed the air and clouds overhead, working long hours under the midnight sun. All this is to help begin answering a crucial question: How much of Greenland’s ice will melt, and how quickly, in a world growing warmer and warming fastest in the Arctic? If all the ice eventually slipped into the ocean, it would be enough to raise global sea levels by 7 meters (23 feet). Even a fraction of that would inundate Bangladesh and south Florida, drown small islands, threaten cities as widely dispersed as Shanghai and New York. But as temperatures rise from greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the answer isn’t coming easily. The challenge — scientific, logistical — appears greater than the resources devoted to it. This Greenland puzzle, and uncertainty over Antarctica’s ice, led the U.N.-sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to essentially disregard the impact on oceans of an accelerating polar melt. In its 2007 global warming report, the IPCC projected a sea-level rise of only 18 to 59 centimeters (7 to 23 inches) this century, mostly from water expanding when warmed.

Summer Camp 2011

We continue our serialisation of Anne by Constance Fenimore Woolson

Anne

“And you call yourself a Protestant!”

Part 26

This looking-glass possessed a brightly hued picture at the top, divided into two compartments, on one side a lovely lady with a large bonnet modestly concealing her face, very bare shoulders, leg-ofmutton sleeves, and a bag hanging on her arm; on the other old Father Time, scythe in hand, as if he was intended as a warning to the lovely lady that minutes were rapid and his stroke sure. “Why do you keep your glass tilted forward so far that we can not look in it, Miss Lois?” Rast had once asked. Miss Lois did it from habit. But she answered: “To keep silly girls from looking at themselves while they are pretending to talk to me. They say something, and then raise their eyes quickly to see how they looked when they said it. I have known them keep a smile or a particular expression half a minute while they studied the effect— ridiculous calves!” “Calves have lovely eyes sometimes,” said Rast. “Did I say the girls were ugly, Master Pert? But the homely girls look too.” “Perhaps to see how they can improve themselves.” “Perhaps,” said the old maid, dryly. “Pity they never learn!” In the sitting -room was a high chest of drawers, an old clock, a chintzcovered settle, and two deep narrow old rocking-chairs, intended evidently for scant skirts; on an especial table was the family Bible, containing the record of the Hinsdale family from the date of the arrival of the Mayflower. Miss Lois’s prayer book was not there; it was up stairs in a bureau drawer. It did not seem to belong to the old-time furniture of the rooms below, nor to the Hinsdale Bible. The story of Miss Lois’s change from the Puritan to the Episcopal ritual might to-day fill a volume if written by one of those brooding, self-searching woman-minds of New England— those unconscious, earnest egotists who bring forth poetry beautiful sometimes to inspiration, but always to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

purely subjective. And if in such a volume the feelings, the arguments, and the change were all represented as sincere, conscientious, and prayerful, they would be represented with entire truth. Nevertheless, so complex are the influences which move our lives, and so deep the under-powers which we ourselves may not always recognize, that it could be safely added by a man of the world as a comment that Lois Hinsdale would never have felt these changes, these doubts, these conflicts, if William Douglas had not been of another creed. For in those days Douglas had a creed—the creed of his young bride. “Miss Hinsdale, we have come to offer you our New-Year’s good wishes,” said Rast, taking off his cap and making a ceremonious bow. “Our equipage will wait outside. How charming is your apartment, madam! And yourself—how Minerva-like the gleam of the eye, the motion of the hand, which—” “Which made the pies now cooling in the pantry, Rast Pronando, to whose fragrance, I presume, I owe the honor of this visit.” “Not for myself, dear madam, but for Anne. She has already confided to me that she feels a certain sinking sensation that absolutely requires the

strengthening influence of pie.” Anne laughed. “Are you going to stay long?” she asked, still standing at the doorway. “Certainly,” replied Rast, seating him in one of the narrow rocking chairs; “I have a number of subjects to discuss with our dear Miss Lois.” “Then I will leave you here, for Tita is waiting for me. I have promised to take them all over to Père Michaux’s house this afternoon.” Miss Lois groaned—two short abrupt groans on different keys. “Have you? Then I’m going too,” said Rast, rising. “Oh no, Rast; please do not,” said the girl, earnestly. “When you go, it is quite a different thing— a frolic always.” “And why not?” said Rast. “Because the children go for religious instruction, as you well know; it is their faith, and I feel that I ought to give them such opportunities as I can to learn what it means.” “It means mummery!” said Miss Lois, loudly and sternly. Anne glanced toward her old friend, but stood her ground firmly. “I must take them,” she said; “I promised I would do so as long as they were children, and under my care. When they are older they can choose for themselves.” “To whom did you make that promise, Anne Douglas?” “To Père Michaux.” “And you call yourself a Protestant!” “Yes; but I hope to keep a promise too, dear Miss Lois.” “Why was it ever made?” “Père Michaux required it, and— father allowed it.” Miss Lois rubbed her forehead, settled her spectacles with her first and third fingers, shook her head briskly once or twice to see if they were firmly in place, and then went on with her knitting. What William Douglas allowed, how could she disallow? Rast, standing by Anne’s side putting on his fur gloves, showed no disposition to yield.

Dishin’ with Dody Gulf Coast cooking - I Dody Denman dody.denman@ieyenews.com

Did you ever have one of those days… weeks…months? It had been that way for me lately and I needed to “get the heck out of Dodge”! So I ran away to the place that always restores my soul…the beach. I have a friend, Joyce, who has a condo in Corpus Christi. Corpus is a coastal community on Corpus Christi Bay being fed from the Gulf of Mexico. I headed south. It was about a four hour drive. With a direct flight, I could have been in Grand Cayman much sooner, but I am glad to be on the Texas Gulf Coast. The water’s not crystal, the sand is more brown than white, but the sea is home. This is the beach I grew up with. While Joyce worked, I was on the beach…writing, taking in the sun, enjoying the water and wind. It was tranquility wrapped in sand. I was back. As I sat at the water’s edge, listening to the gentle waves meet the shore, I thought, “It isn’t Cayman, but it isn’t bad.” One thing the Gulf Coast offers is some of the most amazing seafood anywhere in the world. Gulf shrimp are world famous for their plump, sweet bite. That’s where we began. We enjoyed each other’s friendship and some of the best seafood restaurants around. The first night we

situations. Shaking, dizziness, shortness of breath, and heart palpitations may ensue when a person with SCP finds his or herself at the centre of attention or in the company of many people, regardless whether they are strangers or not.

georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com

Anxiety is a common disorder characterized by excessive worry, tension and anxiety usually when a person faces potentially problematic or dangerous situations. It is also felt when a person perceives an external threat. However, chronic and irrational anxiety can lead to a form of anxiety disorder. There are different types of anxiety disorder depending on their causes or triggers. They include generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), specific phobia (SP), panic disorder (PD), social phobia (SCP), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

GAD A person who has this type of anxiety disorder usually experience prolonged anxiety that is often without basis. More accurately, people with GAD cannot articulate the reason behind their anxiety. This type of anxiety usually last for six months and occurs in around 4–6% of the population usually women. Due to the persistence of the anxiety, people affected with GAD constantly fret and worry. Accompanying physical symptoms include muscle tension, restlessness, fatigability, and sleep disturbances. It is the most frequently encountered anxiety disorder in primary care, where sufferers may seek help for the physical symptoms of the disorder. Studies of fear in animals and clinical studies of people with GAD suggest that similar brain circuits are involved in both cases. For example, numerous complex connections to other brain areas allows the amygdala to coordinate cognitive, emotional, and physiological responses to fear and anxiety.

OCD

situation or object. When exposed to the object or situation they fear, people with specific phobias exhibit signs of intense fear like shaking, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and nausea. Common specific phobias include fear of heights, enclosed spaces, blood, and animals. The fear a person with phobia feels can be so extreme that he or she may disregard safety just to escape the situation.

PD Also known as Agoraphobia, panic disorders are characterized by recurring panic attacks that are often unexpected. Panic attacks are accompanied by a range of physical symptoms, including respiratory (shortness of breath), cardiovascular (fast heart rate), gastrointestinal (nausea), and occulovestibular (dizziness) symptoms. The prevalence of PD is approximately 2% in the general population, is more common in women, and is often complicated by depression. The same brain circuits and neurotransmitters implicated in fear and GAD are also likely to play a role in PD. People with panic disorder are aware that their panic is usually unfounded and illogical. This is why they avoid public situations and being alone. A panic attack can be so severe that people may lose control and hurt themselves.

SP

SCP

Unlike someone with generalized anxiety disorder, a person who has a specific phobia experiences extreme and often irrational fear of a certain

Alternatively called social anxiety, a person with social phobia may exhibit similar symptoms like those of panic disorder especially in social

24

People with obsessive-compulsive disorder experience anxiety caused by a persistent obsession or idea. They tend to avoid experiencing anxiety by resorting to repetitive actions or behaviors that prevent anxiety. For example, a person who is obsessed about cleanliness may experience anxiety at the mere sight of a vase placed slightly off-center. To prevent anxiety, he or she will clean and organize everything compulsively or without reason.

PTSD Post-traumatic stress disorder may occur after a person experienced a severely traumatic event. He or she may relive the experience in his or her mind which causes stress and anxiety. If a person with PTSD comes into contact with stimuli (any object, person, or situation) that he or she associates with the traumatic event, he or she may literally re-experience the event by crying uncontrollably, panicking, or losing control. Subtler symptoms include insomnia and avoidant behavior. PTSD may manifest itself immediately after the traumatic event or even years after. Determining the type of anxiety disorder a person has is crucial to seeking treatment and recovery. Techniques and methods that are used to help a person cope with a certain anxiety usually target not only the management of symptoms but coping mechanisms when exposed to triggers. Only after thorough diagnosis can treatment and recovery for anxiety disorders really commence. Read more: http://www. ANXIETY--DISORDER.COM/ to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

APPLY SUNSCREEN PROPERLY.

The end of the school year is here and savvy moms and dads by now have made all the arrangements for summer. Summer camps and leisurely days at the pool or beach are just a few of the summer rituals for many families. However if you're tempted to let your child play outdoors for even a few minutes without proper sun protection, you might want to think twice. Adolescence and childhood are critical periods during which exposure to UV radiation is more likely to contribute to skin cancer in later life. Children with fair skin, blond or red hair and blue or green eyes are at the highest risk of sunburn. But darker-skinned children also need sun protection. With this in mind, it’s important that parents teach their children how to enjoy fun in the sun safely.

LIMIT OUTDOOR PLAYTIME BETWEEN 10A.M. AND 4P.M.

Apply a thick, even coat to all exposed areas 20 - 30 minutes before your child goes out in the sun. Choose a sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher. Make sure it's labeled "broad spectrum," which means it blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight. For your little ones, sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide should be selected as these compounds are less irritating than others. Sunscreen sticks are best for the face because they are sweat proof and less likely to drip. Don't forget nose, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck; lips can also burn, so apply a lip balm with SPF protection. Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours, or after sweating or swimming.

COVER FROM HEAD TO TOE. Wearing protective clothing and hats is one of the primary ways of warding off UV damage. When wet, light coloured clothing transmits just as much sunlight as bare skin. Keep your kids covered with dark colours, long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. And don't forget the accessories: sunglasses with UV protection to guard against burned corneas, and hats to prevent sunburned scalps and faces. Protective clothing, hats with wide brims, and sunglasses are just as important for babies. At the beach, bring along a large umbrella.

Parents, you are the best teacher by practicing sun safety yourself. If your child sees you following sun safety rules, he'll take them for granted and follow suit. Teach every member of the family how to protect their skin and eyes. With proper supervision, children can learn to protect themselves and enjoy summer fun without sacrificing the health of their skin.

Avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun's rays are at their strongest. Even on cloudy or cooler days, ultraviolet (UV) rays remain strong. Shady spots can be just as tricky because of reflected light. If your child is playing outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply ample sunscreen.

WATCH OUT FOR MEDICATIONS. Some medications increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, so make sure to ask your doctor whether your child may be at risk. Prescription antibiotics and acne medications are the most notorious culprits, but when in doubt, ask.

As the name implies “abstract” denotes what can be interpreted but not seen. The art form is many times debated to be complex and difficult to understand. Yet it attracts a horde of art critics and art collectors from every part of the globe, and several interpretations may accompany abstract paintings. Similarly, abstract photography draws the same popularity except it is done with a camera and not with brush and paint!

There are no rules or norms for creating it and in layman terms “anything goes” as long as it appeals to the eye! The photography technique is used to capture almost any event in a subtle manner such as a drop of water splattering in a pool to look like a crown or a piece of hemp rope at close quarters that looks like a striated bundle etc. The composition is immaterial; it is only the way a scene (really a photograph) is captured on film. The interpretation may come later. It is necessary to have a professional high speed camera and sometimes a special high speed film to do abstract photography. The other requisites are these: A perfect understanding of conventional photographic principles regarding shutter speed, aperture, focusing, film speed and lighting effects; telephoto and close up lenses and flash equipment so you can perform certain trick effects; films of different types like colour, black and white, speed in ASA or DIN, tripod stands, remote shooting, filter lenses, shadow hoods etc. Imagination knows no bounds.

iSports Strike may delay start of Spanish league The start of the Spanish league season looks likely to be delayed after the players’ union and the league failed to agree a deal to avert a strike. Players want a guaranteed wage fund where they would be paid even if their clubs become insolvent.

Six Spanish top-flight clubs are currently in bankruptcy protection. League President Jose Luis Astiazaran said: “We’ve achieved a lot lately but it will be impossible to avoid a strike.” The top division, La Liga, is set to start on the weekend of 20-21 August. Last season a proposed strike was called off after players protested about the distribution of television money. Second-tier club Hercules have struggled to pay some of their players recently, while Real Zaragoza applied for administration in the summer. The AFE say that 200 players are owed money by clubs, with a total of £44m outstanding. One of the players involved is French defender Noe Pamarot, who moved in preseason from Hercules to Granada. He said: I feel like I’ve been cheated because they [Hercules] promised something they can’t do.” New legislation expected to pass in September will see clubs immediately relegated to the third division if they become insolvent. Luis Gil, representative for the Association of Spanish Football Players (AFE) said: “The league does not want to bridge the gap. In this moment the AFE has no intention of extending the strike beyond the second round of games.”

General Information

Cayman finished the Senior Caribbean Squash Championships with third place in both the Women’s and Men’s singles and third overall in the team section. Barbados finished first overall with 25 points, and although Jamaica came second with 22 points, Cayman came close behind the other two with a respectable 20 points. The OECS (Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States) team came fourth with 13 points. The team section of the championships was divided into three events: Men’s Women’s and Veterans, and the Overall Championship category is decided by each country’s performance in each of these. Barbados won the Veterans section, and Jamaica came second, Cayman Third and Trinidad and Tobago, fourth. Barbados also came first in the women’s team section, with Cayman coming second and Jamaica, third. OECS came first in the men’s team event, Jamaica came second, Cayman came third and Barbados came fourth. Commenting on Cayman’s

populations of different countries are taken into consideration, Cayman’s achievement is even more impressive. “We only have 50,000 people, but countries like Guyana have about 750,000, and Trinidad and Tobago has over a million people,” he said. Mr. Stark says he has seen a consistent improvement in the standard of Cayman’s squash playing over a period of several years, and is hopeful for an even better performance during next year’s CASA in Trinidad and Tobago. The reason for the improvement is largely due to increased exposure of the sport to school students, Mr. Stark believes, and it is one of the Cayman Islands National Squash Association’s priorities to introduce as many kids as possible to the sport. “To give an example, we had 750 kids came through the schools squash programme last year,” he said. We are hoping that Kids can come to the squash club and receive instruction- that’s the catalyst – that’s what starts growth in the game. If we keep doing that, that will certainly grow the sport and we will start seeing the benefits in two to three years.”

performance in the CASA Championships Glenn Stark Cayman’s National Squash Coach, said: “It’s a big improvement over last year. Dean Watson and Marlene West both finished third in the individual event, and Cayman finished third overall in the team event. Last year the men’s team finished 7th and the Women’s, 4th. This year for sure we did extremely well based on last year’s performance. Mr. Stark added that if the relative
