Parents of 25-year-old Kerran Baker, missing since late July, said yesterday they were relieved and optimistic as police announced the arrest of a 35-yearold man for murder in the disappearance.

Police announced yesterday morning that a man was in custody “on suspicion of murder, following a police operation in the Prospect area”. Enquiries, the statement said, were continuing.

Police declined to elaborate, however, refusing to identify the man, where or how he had been located, where he was being held or if further charges were pending.

Ms Baker vanished on the evening of 30 July after a 7pm shopping trip at Foster’s Food Fair Airport, captured on CCTV footage. Responding to 31 July alarms from friends, police found groceries and Ms Baker’s handbag at her Arrow Drive, Bodden Town home, and her white Honda Civic abandoned outside Pedro Castle in Savannah the following day.

East End kept up their reputation for putting their heart and soul into their Heritage Day displays.

There was plenty to see, – such as antiques belonging to East End collector William Bodden. There was also an impressive display of old photos and letters and other documents.

Then there were traditional craft items, such as silver thatch baskets and bonnets, along with colourful dresses made by the ladies of the East End group, Creative Hands.

Yvonne Chambers’ hand-knitted dolls were on display. Ms Chambers makes not only the dolls, but their costumes too. Also on display were

some knitted blue and green iguanas.

Next to Ms Chambers, Randy Price was demonstrating a very unique art – he was showing visitors how he makes intricately carved pendants and other jewellery out of coins There was plenty to hear -such as a story being told by Rose Hurlstone, as well as lively music from the sound system, where some of the children were practicing old-time Cayman quadrille dancing There was plenty to do - with guided tours of East End landmarks such as the Granny Sarah old nature well, the caves, and the lighthouse.

And last, but by no means least, there was plenty to taste – from traditional ice cream made by hand with ice cubes in an old wooden ice-

cream maker, turtle stew, delicious conch, and of course, no heritage day would be complete without Cayman’s heavy cakes and sweet puddings.

Later in the afternoon there was a visit from the Seattle Seafair Pirates, who Yo Ho Ho-ed and Arghhh-ed their way around the different stalls, sampling the very best that East End had to offer.

“Somebody called and told me,” said mother Sandra Anthony yesterday, speaking from her Kingston home. ”I am so grateful. I feel good at hearing this, but I would feel better to know where she is and what happened.

“For now, though, well, I am relieved to have something. We are taking it one day at a time,” she said.

Mrs Anthony, husband Wilmot Anthony, sister TonyAnn, aunt Iona and “Patsy” Anthony-Beadle were in George Town in early August, aiding police inquiries, mounting at least two public searches of the Pedro Castle and Midland Acres areas.

told iNews Cayman of their anguish after weeks of waiting and hearing nothing, pleading for investigators to speed their inquiries.

“I feel a little better,” Mr Anthony said yesterday, also speaking from Kingston, describing his relief at the breakthrough. “They finally arrested someone, but I have no idea how they did it or who it is.

They told us nothing.

“We have been waiting, and our big interest now is where [Kerran] is and what happened.

The news, though, was good and we hope to hear something better soon. I feel a bit more optimistic now.”

Among those originally questioned by police was a local boyfriend, earlier described by sister Tony-Anne as “obsessive”, but police would neither confirm nor deny if he had been detained.

The arrests came after 20 UK police detectives arrived in Cayman to aid with a number of high profile cases.

Their remit was to speed investigations and secure witnesses to help with later court proceedings.

Wanted: 50 Runners for CI Red Cross’ “50 for 50” The volunteers and staff of the Cayman Islands Red Cross are still working at full speed ahead to make sure that 2011 is in fact a year to remember. The CIRC’s golden jubilee, which has been marked throughout the year by a number of high profile events such as the Fabulous Fashions Fundraising Fashion Show in February, the Annual Golf Tournament and “Red, Gold and Soul” Gala in September, on top of the usual community programmes which the organisation delivers on a daily basis, will be closing out with one final bang: the Cayman Islands Marathon.

In Benin, pope to articulate position on Africa COTONOU, Benin (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI is returning this week to Africa, the Roman Catholic Church’s fastest-growing region whose pool of aspiring priests replenish dwindling numbers of clerics elsewhere.

The 84-year-old pope arrives on Friday and will visit a seminary in the western town of Ouidah. This tiny nation on Africa’s western coast is emblematic of the church’s growth spurt. In just the past decade, Benin’s Catholic population has grown by half, adding over half-a-million converts. In the same period the pope’s native Germany has lost nearly 2 million worshippers, according to

the World Christian Database.

Benedict is planning to release a document outlining the future of the church in Africa, a pastoral guide which is expected to use the church and its doctrine of penance and forgiveness to address Africa’s numerous ills, especially the cycle of violence. The pope’s position will likely be guided by the 57 recommendations of the 2009 synod held in the capital of Cameroon, where bishops met to articulate the future of the church in Africa.

Among the proposals is the creation of a “sacrament of reconciliation” by organizing both individual and

collective acts of forgiveness, a strategy intended to stem the acts of retribution common to many of Africa’s conflicts.

But music producer Salaam Remi said the soul singer, who died over the summer, was not rushing to release that new material, instead planning to drop a jazz album first with a “supergroup” including Questlove of the Roots.

“She had written down everything she wanted to do,” Remi said Tuesday.

Six dead as storms, possible tornadoes hit Southeast ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) — At least six people have been killed and dozens more injured as a storm system that spawned several possible tornadoes moved across the Southeast USA. Suspected tornadoes were reported Wednesday in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and South Carolina.

Dozens of homes and buildings were damaged and thousands of people were without power as trees and power lines were downed.

It was the worst bout of weather for the state since about 250 people were killed during the tornado outbreak in April. Both campuses were spared major damage this time.

Education and RCIPS record keeping Colin Wilson

I salute Education Minister Rolston Anglin for initiating colin.wilson@ieyenews.com the new academic criteria for students’ graduation from government schools. (Please see our story “Schools Shake Up” Thu 17 Nov.) Students will no longer be said to have ‘graduated’ simply by turning up to school on a regular basis and being well behaved. All students who wish to obtain a high school diploma at the end of their compulsory education will also need to meet a minimum academic standard.

The qualifications graduates obtain are very confusing to would be employers. Do CXC and GCSE qualifications have equal value? How does a BTEC qualification compare to an IGCSE pass? What does a COEA qualification mean and what skill levels do persons with these passes possess?

“We’re constantly faced with these questions,” said Anglin. “It’s important that everyone in the community understands how qualifications are ranked and rated and how they match up to skills and knowledge levels.

The Cayman Islands National Qualifications Framework (CINQF) will assist with all this.”

The present system of “diplomas for all” was meaningless.

General, Alastair Swarbrick’s recent report saying almost the same thing, seems to be continuing ad nauseam.

Jennifer Dilbert, the Information Commissioner slammed the RCIPS this week saying, “Procedurally, the handling of this case, from the initial response to the internal review, was atrocious. The RCIPS need to take steps to improve the way they process and handle FOI requests.” Not a single one of the legal requirements and best practice rules which applied during the course of the request were followed in this case, she added. Mrs. Dilbert also stated that there are some “very serious record-keeping issues” within the RCIPS. Mrs. Dilbert was referring to a request for records of the PSU (Professional Standards Unit) investigations including personnel records of the applicant (Denny Warren) that was partially refused by the RCIPS. However, the RCIPS, are still using the old ‘gobbledygook’ trick by suggesting Mr. Warren returns to the RCIPS at a future date as the investigation files were not yet officially closed and therefore “investigations could be continued.”

Thankfully Mrs. Dilbert would have none of this and gave the RCIPS 30 days to conduct a further search for records and 45 days to seek a judicial review of the Commissioner’s Decision if they so chose.

A lovely series on UK television was called “Rumpole of the Bailey” about an ageing London barrister. One of his sayings was, “Death. Hmm. A Leo “Rumpole” McKern lot of it around.”

To die means to live no more. A person who was identified by a name, a family, a character, a nationality and many lovely values is no more. What was taken for granted, is not there suddenly. Death has taken the life away.

How do soldiers feel about death? I expect they love not only their friends and family, but also their society.

A soldier when not on duty is hurt as much as the rest of us by a death. But the same soldier thinks nothing about

killing thousands who also belong to a nation, a society, a family, a mother, children and wife.

This soldier who gets so pained by a single death in his/her neighborhood, has only one object in the war - kill as many enemy soldiers as he can.

Bring as much destruction as he/she can to the enemy.

Duty cannot be called brutality. But the result is the same. So many wars have been fought on the earth that we have lost the count. Still they continue.

The killings continue. Nationalities define boundaries and boundaries define friendships or enmity. What a tragedy!

Did God draw the borders of nations? They evolved themselves. If we view our earth from the space, we will find it a small dot. But as we walk on the planet, things change.

Loyalties change, and man changes. The result is always death and more death.

The Rt. Rev. and Hon. Alfred C. Reid left the Cayman Islands for the last time on Tues 15th Nov. as the Bishop of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. He presided at a Confirmation service at St George’s Anglican Church on the preceding Sunday. A special farewell reception for the retiring Bishop was held at St George’s Hall on Mon (14). Presentations and speeches were made by two of the church’s trustees, Mr. Lemuel Hurlston (who was also M.C.) and the Cayman Islands Chief Justice, Hon. Anthony Smellie. Bishop Reid was accompanied by his wife, Gloria. He made a farewell speech that was a mixture of jokes and an explanation of his involvement in how he was instrumental in getting the Diocese of Jamaica’s name changed to what is now the Diocese of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.

Bishop Reid’s pastoral journey began in 1960 when he was ordained Deacon. He entered the priesthood in 1961, and served for five years as Curate at the St. James Parish Church in Montego Bay, before assuming responsibility for the Lucea Cure in Hanover. His subsequent assignments included Rector of the Vere Cure, Clarendon; Rector of the Stony Hill Cure, St. Andrew; Chaplain of the Jamaica Defence Force; and Acting Anglican Warden at the United Theological College of the West Indies (UTCWI).

He was enthroned as the 13th Bishop of Jamaica on January 25, 2001 at the Cathedral of St. Jago de la Vega, Spanish Town, and in the ensuing decade, he has worked to preserve the heritage of the Church while, at the same time promoting innovative religious expression. In addition to his Diocesan responsibilities, he has been the Bishop in charge of the Eastern Jamaica Region since 2005.

In his 50 years as a priest, Bishop Reid has contributed to the work of several Diocesan committees, as well as the Boards of local and regional educational and religious institutions, including the United Theological College of the West Indies (UTCWI).

He chaired the Provincial Commission on Liturgy and Music which was responsible for reprinting the Book of Common Prayer in 2007 and publishing the new CPWI (Church in the Province of the West Indies) Hymnal in June 2010. The Prayer Book and Hymnal are used

by Anglican Churches throughout the Englishspeaking Caribbean. He is also a member of the Ecumenical Association of Third World Theologians and the International Anglican Liturgical Consultation.

Bishop Reid is a graduate of St. Peter’s College, which trained Anglican clergy in Jamaica prior to the establishment of the UTCWI in which the Anglican Church is an ecumenical partner.

He holds the Bachelor of Divinity Degree from

the Episcopal Theological College, the Master’s in Education from Boston College and the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Divinity from the Episcopal Divinity School. A son of the Parish of Manchester, he was awarded the National Honour of Order of Jamaica in 2005. He and his wife Gloria have been married for 45 years.

They have three children – Randall, Annette and Damian, and four grandchildren.

Colonic Crohn’s disease

Tel. 769 5676 email: drcharles@doctor.com Overview Crohn’s disease, otherwise known as Regional Enteritis, may affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus.

As shown in Table 1, Crohn’s disease most often involves the small intestines (79%).

However one cannot overlook the fact that Crohn’s disease may significantly involve the colon (69%), with the colon solely being involved 19% of the time.

CASE HISTORY A fifty-six year old Caucasian male, who was initially treated abroad with antibiotics for traveler’s diarrhea, presented to our establishment with bloody diarrhea, fever and crampy abdominal pains. He had these complaints for three weeks. Through a series of diagnostic procedures, which included colonoscopy, biopsy and histology, a diagnosis of Crohn’s disease of the colon was reached. Interestingly, the colonoscopy revealed multiple polyps throughout the colon which were characteristically pseudopolyps, rather than adenomatous polyps, which may become cancerous. This highlights the fact that colonic polyps may be inflammatory and a presentation of Crohn’s disease. Hence, if patients in their fifties presents with blood in their stool, a colonoscopy must be done. This can reveal Crohn’s disease with pseudopolyposis and rectal sparing as in our patient. Alternate diagnoses include ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, colonic polyposis and colon cancer among others.

Causes Crohn’s disease is thought to be an autoimmune disease. Normally the immune system helps to protect the body. However, in an autoimmune disease, the immune system cannot tell the difference between the normal tissues of the body and foreign substances. The immune system therefore destroys the normal body tissues as well as foreign substances. For example, in Crohn’s disease, the body’s immune system attacks the gastrointestinal tract, causing inflammation.

Diarrhea can result from this inflammation as was the case for our patient. There are three categories of disease presentation in Crohn’s disease namely stricturing, penetrating, and inflammatory. Stricturing disease causes narrowing of the bowel that may lead to bowel obstruction or changes in the caliber of the feces. Penetrating disease creates abnormal passageways (fistulae) between the bowel and other structures, such as the skin, vagina and anus. Inflammatory disease (or nonstricturing, non-penetrating disease) causes inflammation without causing strictures or

fistulae. In the case of our patient, Crohn’s disease was of the inflammatory type since there was no evidence of stricture formation or penetration on colonoscopy.

Incidence In the United States, the incidence (number of new cases) and prevalence (number of people who have the disease) have increased steadily during the last 50 years. The incidence of Crohn’s disease in the USA is approximately 149:100,000 as cited by the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. The incidence is thought to be similar in Europe but lower in Asia and Africa. The disease tends to affect people in their teens and 20s, and people in their 50s through to their 70s, and ages in between due to not being diagnosed with Crohn’s and being diagnosed instead with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Crohn’s disease is more prevalent in whites than in African Americans and Asians. In the United States, Europe, and South Africa, Crohn’s disease is 2-4 times more common among Jewish people than among other ethnic groups. A study done by Gastroenterologist Michael Lee in the 1980’s, showed that Crohn’s disease was rare in nearby Jamaica, and over a period of 20 years at the University Hospital, Kingston, Jamaica, twenty patients with Crohn’s disease were reported, with 14 female and 6 males. The mean age at presentation was 37 years (range 8-67), and symptoms were present for a mean of 12 months (range 1 day-4 yrs).

As shown in Fig 2, while Crohn’s disease has skipped areas and can be located in different areas of the digestive tract simultaneously, it does not usually include the rectum. Ulcerative colitis on the other hand, usually involves the rectum and is continuous meaning that it does not have skipped areas.

Risk Factors As well as being thought to be an autoimmune disease, many factors play a role in causing Crohn’s disease. There is evidence of a genetic link to Crohn’s disease, putting individuals with siblings afflicted with the disease at higher risk. Males and females are equally affected. No risk factors were identified in our patient showing that the disease may occur sporadically.

History The disease was named after an American gastroenterologist from New York City’s Mount Sinai Hospital, named Burrill Bernard Crohn, who, in 1932, together with two colleagues, described a series of patients with inflammation of the terminal ileum, the area most commonly affected by the illness.

For this reason, the disease has also been called regional ileitis or regional enteritis.

The condition, however, had previously been independently described in medical literature by others. The most notable case was in 1904 by Polish surgeon Antoni Leśniowski for whom the condition is alternatively named Leśniowski-Crohn’s disease in Polish

literature. Inflammatory bowel diseases were described by Giovanni Battista Morgagni (1682– 1771) and by Scottish physician T. Kennedy Dalziel in 1913.

Signs and symptoms The symptoms may be subtle and it may be years before the disease is diagnosed. Usually symptoms begin between ages 15 and 30 years of age, but they may occur at any age. Table 2 shows signs and symptoms.

eat. Also, if there is extensive small bowel involvement there may be malabsorption of carbohydrates and lipids, which again can cause weight loss. The amount of diarrhea depends on whether the disease is mainly in the colon or in the small intestines. Therefore fecal consistency may range from watery to solid. One may have as much as twenty bowel movements per day, with the necessity to be awakened in the nights to pass stool. Mr. X’s main complaint was watery diarrhea. People with Crohn’s disease experience chronic recurring periods of flare-ups and remission.

Among children, growth failure is common.

Many children are first diagnosed with Crohn’s disease based on inability to maintain growth.

Signs outside of the Intestines Extra-intestinal signs may be uveitis which is inflammation of the interior portion of the eye.

This can cause pain especially when exposed to light. The inflammation may also involve the white portion of the eye (sclera) called episcleritis. Both can cause loss of vision if they are not treated. Crohn’s disease is also associated with joint pains which may include the knees, shoulders, sacroiliac joints and spines, as well as the small joints of the hands and feet. One form of skin involvement is called Erythema Nodosum. It presents as red nodules usually appearing on the shins. Another skin manifestation is Pyoderma Gangrenosum which is a painful ulcerating nodule.

Crohn’s disease can also cause anaemia and osteoporosis. The mouth of the person with Crohn’s disease may also contain ulcers.

Diagnosis Diagnosis of Crohn’s is sometimes challenging and a number of tests may be utilized to ascertain the diagnosis.

Endoscopy in particular colonoscopy is the first diagnostic tool of choice. Colonoscopy is about 70% effective of diagnosing the disease while other modalities are less effective.

Colonoscopy offers visualisation of the colon as well as the ileum or ending portion of the small intestines. Fig 3 shows the appearance of Crohn’s disease with pseudopolyposis on colonoscopy.

on histology. However Mr. X’s biopsy of the colon did not reveal granulomas. Small bowel barium studies can be done to show areas affected in the small intestines. Small bowel studies was not performed on Mr. X. Additionally, the following results may also be altered in Crohn’s disease: Albumin, C-reactive protein, Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, fecal fat, hemoglobin, liver function tests and white blood cell count. Mr. X had increased ESR and CRP which are inflammatory markers.

However he was not anemic and his Liver function tests and white blood cell count were within normal limits.

Complications Complications include bowel obstruction, fistula formation, cholesterol gall stones, hypocalcaemia from fat malabsorption, perianal disease, and vitamin B12 malabsorption from terminal ileum involvement. Fortunately for Mr. X, none of theses complications had developed. This could be due to the fact that his condition was diagnosed before those complications could be developed.

Treatment Though there is no known cure for Crohn’s disease, there are now suitable treatments for Crohn’s disease that are more likely to keep the disease in remission, so that if adequately controlled, Crohn’s disease may not significantly restrict daily living. Treatment for Crohn’s disease involves first treating the acute problem, then maintaining remission.

Medication Acute treatment uses medications to treat any infection (normally antibiotics) and to reduce inflammation (normally aminosalicylate antiinflammatory drugs and corticosteroids).

When symptoms are in remission, treatment enters maintenance, with a goal of avoiding the recurrence of symptoms. Prolonged use of corticosteroids has significant side-effects; as a result, they are, in general, not used for long-term treatment. Alternatives include aminosalicylates alone, though only a minority are able to maintain the treatment, and many require immunosuppressive drugs.

Medications used to treat the symptoms of Crohn’s disease include 5-aminosalicylic

acid (5-ASA) formulations, prednisone, immunomodulators such as azathioprine, mercaptopurine, methotrexate, infliximab, adalimumab, certolizumab and natalizumab.

Hydrocortisone should be used in severe attacks of Crohn’s disease.

Surgery Crohn’s cannot be cured by surgery, though it is used when partial or a full blockage of the intestine occurs. Surgery may also be required for complications such as obstructions, fistulas and/or abscesses, or if the disease does not respond to drugs. After the first surgery, Crohn’s usually shows up at the site of the resection, however it can appear in other locations. After a resection, scar tissue builds up, which can cause strictures, which form when the intestines become too small to allow stool to pass through easily, which can lead to a blockage. After the first resection, another resection may be necessary within five years. Short bowel syndrome (SBS, also short gut syndrome or simply short gut) can be caused by the surgical removal of the small intestines. It usually develops in those having had half or more of their small intestines removed. Diarrhea is the main symptom of short bowel syndrome.

Lifestyle Changes Certain lifestyle changes can reduce symptoms, including dietary adjustments, proper hydration, and smoking cessation. Smoking may increase Crohn’s disease; stopping is recommended. Eating small meals frequently instead of big meals may also help with a low appetite. To manage symptoms, have a balanced diet with proper portion control.

Fatigue can be helped with regular exercise, a healthy diet, and enough sleep. A food diary may help with identifying foods that trigger symptoms. Some patients should follow a low dietary fiber diet to control symptoms especially if fibrous foods cause symptoms. Patients should avoid milk or dairy products as they have been shown in recent research to contribute to or even cause Crohn’s disease.

Acutely Mr. X was treated antibiotics and intravenous steroids. He was discharged on Prednisolone, Azathioprine, Asocol (Mesalamine) and Predsol enema. He showed improvement.

Prognosis Crohn’s disease is a chronic condition for which there is currently no cure.

It is characterized by periods of improvement followed by episodes when symptoms flare up.

With treatment, most people achieve a healthy weight, and the mortality rate for the disease is relatively low. However, Crohn’s disease is associated with an increased risk of small bowel and colorectal carcinoma, including bowel cancer. Our friend Mr. X has had a few flare ups which were able to be controlled. He presently lives like a regular person, and if you meet him on the road, you would not know that he has Crohn’s disease unless he tells you.

Suspect in White House shooting arrested

WASHINGTON (AP) — A man clad in black who was obsessed with President Barack Obama pulled his car within view of the White House at night and fired shots from an assault rifle, cracking a window of the first family’s living quarters while the president was away, authorities said about their stilldeveloping investigation.

The U.S. Secret Service found two bullets had hit the White House and agents caught up with Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez in Pennsylvania on Wednesday after a four-day search. Police arrested the 21-yearold Idaho man at a hotel after a desk clerk recognized his picture. Ortega was scheduled to make his first appearance at 2 p.m. Thursday in federal court in Pittsburgh and many questions remained about his motive and background.

Authorities are investigating the man’s mental health and say there are indications he believed attacking the White House was part of a personal mission from God, according to two different law enforcement officials who spoke with The Associated Press.

There are also indications the man had become obsessed with Obama and the White House, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

Shots were fired at the building Friday night. Agents discovered Tuesday that one of the two bullets hit the exterior and a second cracked a window on the second floor residential level, just behind the rounded portico visible from the south side of the White House.

Obama and his wife Michelle were on a trip to California and Hawaii at the time of the shooting. The president has since traveled on to Australia on a nine-day Asia-Pacific tour. The Obamas were in California without daughters Malia and Sasha, but the White House had no immediate comment on the shooting or who may have been home at the time.

Investigators believe Ortega fired the rifle from his vehicle Friday, according to an official with knowledge of the investigation.

Gunshots were reported that night on Constitution Avenue about 9:30 p.m.

Soon after, U.S. Park Police found an abandoned vehicle, the assault rifle inside it, near a bridge leading out of the nation’s capital to Virginia. The car led investigators to Ortega, and they obtained a warrant for his arrest Sunday, officials said.

This is not the first time the White House has come under attack.

In the last 40 years, the landmark has faced threats ranging from a stolen helicopter that landed on the grounds in 1974 to a man who wielded a sawed-off shotgun on a sidewalk outside in 1984. In 1994 alone, there were five threats including a plane crash on the lawn and a suspected drive-by shooting.

Another man fired at least 29 rounds from a semiautomatic weapon, with 11 striking the White House. Ortega is from Idaho Falls, Idaho, and was reported missing Oct. 31 by his family. A message left for Ortega’s mother Wednesday at an Idaho Falls restaurant where she works was not returned. Phone listings for family members in the city were disconnected.

Ortega has an arrest record in three states but has not been linked to any radical organisations, U.S. Park Police have said.

In the USA the rise of gas (I still call it petrol) is greeted with shock, horror, and anger. One of the emails going the rounds recently was, “Join the resistance!!!! I hear we are going to hit close to $ 5.00 a gallon by next summer. Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action.” $5.00 by summer you cry. The cheapest petrol you can buy here in Cayman in November 2011 is $5.50 (self serve) and $5.56 (full serve).

And I am talking CI$ and not US$. I am aware we use an imperial gallon and not the US gallon that is a bit less. My point is “Hello, USA, the rest of the world have been paying over $5.00 for their petrol already.”

Emails doing the rounds include boycotting the gas stations that carry the major fuel brands EXXON and MOBIL to force them to lower their prices. The idea is to get 300 MILLION people in the USA to actually do this. The organiser(s) say it would only take 8 days to achieve this.

This has been attempted before, and it’s never been successful. The basic reason is that the USA is a country with a very diverse populace.

Any attempt to get an effective number of them to abide by the discipline such a plan would require is simply impractical.

However, that’s not the point I want to make. I contend that these people are missing the real point: Why can’t the American public accept that the issue isn’t high gas prices, but their stubborn subservience to gasoline? The obvious answer is that gasoline is the established and easiest facilitator for personal transportation. And, as long as those facts remain, the Americans’ habits will remain, as well.

The rest of the world has accepted lifestyle adjustments with $5.00 petrol and moved on to other issues.

adjustments to make is changing the location of the workplace. Move it from an office to home!

Cyberspace can make decentralisation much more efficient.

Some Fortune 500 companies began to embrace the concept over a decade ago. Bank of America, for instance, allows many of their executives to utilize a home-office relationship.

Clearly, not every job allows its worker to perform at home, but there are enough that do. The effects would be subtle, but significant. For example, if even 20% of the vehicles in a commute were removed from the road, traffic congestion would be eased. That, in turn, would allow for better mileage in the vehicles that wouldn’t be stuck in idling or stopand-go sequences. That saves gas and reduces demand.

As e-commerce continues its relentless drive toward mainstream acceptance, numerous shopping trips can also be reduced. Cyber-meetings also are very possible now, and they can accommodate the sharing of documents. Even cyber-schooling could be expanded; Sweden has been operating a cyber-curriculum for the youth of its citizens abroad for years, which is a great way for its

culture and high academic standards to be provided to those who work elsewhere.

So, any attempt to target Exxon --- or British Petroleum or Elf or Shell --- is Quixotic. Target yourself instead. You’ll surely get much better mileage out of your time. You’ll also probably notice an improvement in your monthly gasoline budget. In the bigger picture, as well, it’s a simple plan that relies on simple market forces, i.e- less demand lowers prices.

Small strategies are what win the wars. In this one, open your battlefront in cyberspace.

Will it work here in Cayman? I don’t see why not. Just recently the price of fuel dropped to both of our suppliers, Texaco and Esso. They passed it on to the gas stations. Did they in turn pass it on to us? No they did not, or if some did they were very slow to do it. My regular petrol station’s prices have been unchanged up to the date of writing this editorial now over a week later.

Take some comfort. In the United Kingdom the average price for petrol is US$8.11 per gallon! The experts say that price will not remain for too much longer. Guess which way it is going to change? to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Two new faces at GIS (GIS) —Two newly-recruited Caymanian communicators, Yvette Cacho and Stephon Johnson, round out the staff at the offices of Government Information Services.

Yvette Cacho joins this week as an Information Officer, assigned to provide communications assistance to the Ministry of Community Affairs, Gender and Housing. She graduated from Florida International University in 2006 with a double-major in Management and Marketing. There, she was an active member of Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity, which is business-focused.

Yvette is already accustomed to the civil service as, for two years, she worked with the Constitution Secretariat during the preparations for the new Cayman Islands Constitution.

That was followed by two years as Secretary of the Immigration Appeals Tribunal. Both appointments were under the Cabinet Office.

Now, the young lady balances “work and Rotaract, while enjoying Cayman’s culture and social life”. A founding member of Rotaract Blue, Yvette has served as the PR Chairman, and currently heads the Open Arms section of the club – which promotes integration and non-discrimination for people with disabilities.

While active in athletics and dance in her school years, today Yvette’s maintains an interest in travelling – especially to other Caribbean islands.

Ever the communicator, she is also known in her community as the go-to person for writing special messages, or designing promotional flyers and posters.

Yvette looks forward to the challenges of her new role, and hopes to eventually complete a masters’ degree in advertising.

Stephon Johnson recently joined GIS as a Video Production Specialist.

This entails producing the weekly GIS Spotlight TV show, creating advertisements and public service announcements, as well as editing and archiving video.

An athletic prodigy, Stephon has represented Cayman in trackand-field since he was nine years old. Progressing steadily over the years, at the high school level he competed in five CARIFTA Games, Commonwealth Games, Pan American Games and other regional meets.

Prowess in this area led to his being awarded an athletic scholarship by Lindenwood University in Missouri, with the Cayman Islands Government (CIG) covering the remainder of his tuition. He graduated in 2005 with bachelors of fine arts degree, with an emphasis in computer graphic design.

Stephon’s talents span a range of artistic media – from animation and thatch to charcoal drawing and oil painting.

While valuing the discipline and the educational opportunities gained in the sporting arena, he said he soon realised that, “Unless you are a top athlete making millions of dollars annually, an education is vital to

your future.”

Taking a sabbatical during his college years, Stephon trained with the initial group of athletes at the now-acclaimed High Performance Training Centre in Jamaica. Accolades he earned over the years included the Cayman Islands Male Senior Athlete of the Year award. He also made his mark on the American sports arena, as a four-time All-American Athlete, and a two-time National Champion.

This summer he was inducted into the Lindenwood University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Stephon expressed pride that he has always remained true to God, country and the two inspiring women in his life: his mother Jacqueline Whittaker; and his wife Meila – with whom he has two children.

The streets were packed with people galoreYoungsters fought mock battles on the ironshore.

Our harbour was full of ships. big and small, A visiting warship and sail boats, with masts so tall.

All participating in what was to be An invasion of the pirates for all to see.

But, from where I was sitting, I could see a five year old, With a patch over one eye and being very bold As he challenged other young pirates to a fencing match, I immediately forgot the landing and started to watch, For this young pirate, with only one eye Could run over the ironshore better than you or I. And he not only carried a sword but a razor blade as well.

I really felt bad about this and at having to yell At this young pirate so serious at play I dreaded the damage he could do with a razor blade.

I told him the police would come and take him away.

“So go play with the sword and get rid of the blade”.

Then as luck would have it, he saw something move In a very small hole on the ironshore.

He quickly stopped what he was doing And knelt on his knees, quickly pursuing A tiny crab so frightened of the crowd Not to mention the fireworks going off so loud.

But this young pirate, with only one eye, Couldn’t reach the crab at first so he had another try That’s right - you’ve guessed it - with the razor blade, He pulled out the little crab piece by piece - dead!

By now we’d both missed the excitement of The Landing The Governor had been captured and we’d not seen it happening.

I can only hope that my little one eyed friend Was found by his parents, in the end.

Roy Archer laid to rest “He enjoyed a reputation of being firm but always fair” Colin Wilson colin.wilson@ieyenews.com

It was a very moving Funeral Mass for the late Roy St. Aubyn Archer at St George’s Anglican Church on Wed. 16th November.

The church was packed and overflowed to a tent in the church grounds that was also full of mourners. Closed circuit television kept these people informed of what was happening in the church.

The mass took nearly two and a half hours to complete because of the number of tributes paid to Mr. Archer from his family and friends and because he was a retired Deputy Commissioner of Police, the RCIPS were very visibly present. An honour guard was placed beside the coffin throughout the service and police officers stood with raised ceremonial swords as Mr. Archer’s coffin was wheeled to the awaiting hearse.

Roy Archer was born on 17th February, 1931 in Woodford Park, Saint Andrew, Jamaica.

He was educated in Kingston and graduated from the Kingston Technical School and immediately found employment as an aircraft mechanic. As a youngster, Roy was active in St. Matthews Anglican Church, Allman Town. He was active in various branches of the Church and also the Sea Scouts. He migrated to seek employment in the Cayman

Islands in 1961 and shortly thereafter, in 1962, he was successfully recruited into the ranks of the Police Force as a Constable. His dedication and discipline led him to further training including various overseas courses followed by rapid advancement through the ranks by promotions.

Following several courses in Jamaica where Roy excelled, he was selected to undertake a higher police training course at Hendon in the UK in 1967. This was followed by advanced training at the Police College in Dishforth, UK, in 1971 sponsored by the Ministry of Overseas Development. Roy was eventually promoted to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police.

He enjoyed a reputation for being firm but always fair. His career approach was filled with a high sense of loyalty, duty and discipline and he represented the Cayman Islands proudly at conferences and meetings both locally and overseas. On one of these occasions he was presented with a plaque of distinction by the Chilean Branch of Interpol in 1981. He enjoyed a close relationship with the officers of the Jamaica Defense Force as well as the US Coast guard and Interpol.

He was married to Lillian on the 11th December, 1978. Roy and Lillian were among the early members to join and support the redevelopment work of the Anglican Church in the Cayman Islands and they willingly opened their home to host visiting Priests and having prayer groups gather for weekly Bible Study.

After 22 years of service to the Police, Roy retired in 1983 and in 1984 joined the Manufacturers Life Insurance Company as a Life Insurance Agent. He excelled in this career change and was pleased to share his knowledge and training with his life insurance

clients, many of whom were personal friends and colleagues. He earned several awards for distinguished service and other things. He retired in 2008.

Roy was an avid cricket fan and was admitted to the Cayman Islands Cricket association Hall of Fame in 2002. He was awarded a certificate for Life Time Achievement in 2003.

Preceding him in death were his parents, William and Gladysmate and brothers, Albert and Willy. Left to mourn his passing are his loving wife Lillian, siter Thelma, Aunt Amy and children Joy, Andre, Sandra, Christine, Brenda, Dorna, Denise, Marcel and Marco. He had two nephews, one niece, 18 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Roy Archer passed away on Friday 4th November, 2011 at the age of 80 after a brief illness.

Officiating at the Funeral Mass was the Rt. Rev. Dr. Robert Thompson, Bishop of Kingston and Rev. Mary Graham.

Sepp Blatter is facing increasing calls to quit after his gaffe in the fight against racism.

The FIFA president is facing renewed demands for his resignation after dismissing on-pitch racism with an astonishing response.

Asked directly by a CNN reporter if racism exists on the pitch, Blatter denied it and said such incidents should simply be settled by a handshake at the end of the match.

‘I would deny it,’ he said. ‘There is no racism, there is maybe one of the players towards another, he has a word or a gesture which is not the correct one, but also the one who is affected by that, he should say that this is a game.

‘We are in a game, and at the end of the game, we shake hands, and this can happen. On the field of play sometimes you say something that is not very correct, but then at the end of the game you have the next game where you can behave better.’

To a reporter from Al-Jazeera he simply compounded the situation.

‘During a match you may say something to somebody who is not exactly looking like you,’ he said. ‘But at the end... it’s forgotten.’

It comes as Luis Suarez was charged by the FA over allegations that he racially abused Patrice Evra.

At the same time, England captain John Terry remains the subject of an FA inquiry and a formal Metropolitan Police investigation into claims that he racially abused Anton Ferdinand at Loftus Road last month.

Now Blatter is facing a fight to hold on to his job after a backlash from the world of football.

Sports Minister Hugh Robertson said: ‘This is incredibly serious but it is part of a pattern of behaviour.

Asked whether Blatter should go, Robertson said: ‘Yes. I can’t see there’s anything terribly new in this. We’ve been saying this for some time. Sepp Blatter will expect the English and the English press to pile in on him.’

Professional Footballers’ Association chief Gordon Taylor weighed in by saying: ‘He is the leader of world football, he has to be a leader in anti-racism.

‘Racism is divisive and for him to say the player on the receiving end should forget about it at the end of the game and shake hands...we are going backwards... it is not good enough, it’s embarrassing.

‘And coming on top of his comments which were offensive about female footballers, his

homophobic comments about homosexuals not going to Qatar, the World Cup bidding process, he won’t have technology over goalline decisions and the corruption which is so plainly evident at FIFA. It is time for him to go.

‘He has presided over a lot of issues which haven’t been good enough. If he is the leader of world football I am not going to be a follower and I can’t believe anyone could follow him.

‘It can’t be acceptable and I believe it is the straw which broke the camel’s back. He should step aside so we can see what Michel Platini can do.’

Blatter is desperately attempting to resolve the issue and has even taken to Twitter to hit back at a furious Rio Ferdinand.

After initially posting: ‘@SeppBlatter your comments on racism are so condescending its almost laughable. If fans shout racist chants but shake our hands is that ok?’, Ferdinand then added - in reference to a picture of Blatter with FIFA member Tokyo Sexwale: ‘Fifa clear up the blatter comments with a pic of him posing with a black man..I need the hand covering eyes symbol!!’

On Thursday, Blatter replied: ‘@rioferdy5 The ‘black man’ as you call him has a name: Tokyo Sexwale. He has done tremendous work against racism and apartheid in Africa.

‘We have done several joint activities to raise awareness on the struggle against racism in South Africa. FIFA has a long standing and proud record in the area of anti-discrimination which will continue.’

Charles “Killa” Whittaker will take a giant leap up the IBF world rankings with a victory in Miami tonight.

The West Bay junior middleweight fighter is currently ranked 15th but if he can defeat Cuban Giorbis Barthelemy, ranked ninth, he will rise to second spot.

Whittaker has been in the US for several weeks preparing himself for the big fight at the Miami Airport Convention Centre.

Yesterday his agent Raul Alvarez said: “Charles is ready for this fight. He will take the fight to Giorbis and won’t be wasting any rounds.”

Left-hander Barthelemy was once represented by Raul who clearly has the inside track on the 39-year-old.

“He’s a tough guy,” admitted Raul.

“But we are confident in Charles’ ability and sure he can progress.

“Giorbis was part of the first wave of Cuban boxers to come over to Florida.

Legend has it that he actually swam to Guantanamo Bay so he’s clearly a fit guy.

“Our goal is always victory and then we will be looking at a world title fight which is what Charles’ deserves.

“A lot of work and effort has gone in to get him in this position, not just from Charles but from Norman his trainer and all those in Cayman who have supported him from day one.

“He came here a number of weeks ago to help focus and to get away from all the distractions back home.

“He has trained well and we have had the opportunity to spar with a number of very good boxers, particularly lefthanders, to prepare him for this fight.

“We would never say defeat would mean the end for him, but at 37, he knows how important this opportunity is and anything other than a win would be a big, big dent in his career but we are only thinking about victory. That is our only goal.”
