BUSH ATTACKS iNEWS Premier accuses iNews editor of misinformation Tad Stoner tad.stoner@ieyenews.com
Premier McKeeva Bush, while denying responsibility for limited public discussions of Cayman-UK relations, on Wednesday in the LA accused iNews Cayman editor Colin Wilson of “jump[ing] on the
misinformation bandwagon”. Dismissing allegations that he had truncated the time allowed to gather public views on formal UKCayman arrangements, the premier said Mr Wilson had ”accused me of not telling the country about the public consultation until the 11th hour,” an inaccuracy, he went on, that “distorts what really happened”. Agreeing that the consultation had been too short, Mr Bush offered the public a version of events
blaming London’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) for insufficient notice. Referring to MP Henry Bellingham, responsible for British possessions abroad, Mr Bush said he should be blamed: “If the Minister for the Overseas Territories is telling me on September 16th that he wants responses from a consultation process that includes as many people of the Cayman Islands as possible by November 18th, how is that my fault? West Bay Heritage Day
West Bay Heritage Day’s ‘OldTime Cayman House,’ was a great place for kids from the Sir John A. Cumber Primary School to meet pirates - in this case from the Bowlegs Pirates group from Florida, who were visiting their Pirate brothers in Cayman. The day had plenty of local culture going on - everything from the Cayman Catboat Club to West Bay’s silver thatch artisans. There were also offerings of tasty fish, fritters, and salt beef for sale.

West Bay Heritage Day lifts spirits

Complaints Commissioner, Nicola Williams shows off her office’s new slogan

The steel pan band, the Panoramas, were providing plenty of Caribbeanflavour music to lift the spirits at the entrance to the West Bay Heritage Day. Children from the Sir John A Cumber School had been taken to touch, see and taste the displays of culture. Some of them got lifted into a traditional catboat, the sky-blue Captain D, by Cayman Catboat Club’s Vice-President Kem Jackson. The Old-Time Cayman House, with a big, 100-year old glass case full of antique carpentry tools inside, was another focal point for the school children. There, on the steps of the

house, they posed for a photo with a couple of buccaneers from the Bowlegs Pirates, all the way from Fort Walton Beach, Florida. “This is our first year of visiting Cayman’s Pirates Week. We really enjoyed it and expect to be back” pirate Bob Carter said. West Bayer Elizabeth Banks was in an old-time Cayman shop, really a little wooden hut full of the sorts of things that every household needed, back in bygone times. There was even a special dictionary of West Bay slang on sale for two dollars. thatch palm for as long as she can remember. She learnt the skill from her mother, she said. Her beautiful hats, bags and baskets were on display, next to those of fellow West Bay Silver Thatch artisan, Rose May Ebanks, who was demonstrating the art of plaiting the strong strips of dried leaf. Complaints Commissioner Nicola Williams and her colleague Claudine Simons were there to inform the public about the work of their office. As usual, all kinds of traditional Cayman foods were on offer, including snapper served with fritters and rice, conch stew, and mouthwatering slow-baked salt beef, served with red beans and rice.

No clear evidence to rule on former Cayman banker’s appeal
NE
W
A Swiss court yesterday said it lacked clear evidence to rule on an appeal by a former Swiss banker turned WikiLeaks whistleblower against his conviction for breaching Switzerland’s strict banking secrecy after he revealed private client data. Rudolf Elmer, who worked at the Cayman Islands branch of Swiss private bank Julius Baer until he was fired in 2002, helped bring WikiLeaks to prominence when he used the data to publish bank documents to expose tax evasion. Judge Peter Marti said on Thursday it was not clear whether the CD-roms Elmer had handed over contained data of bank clients in Switzerland or just in the Cayman Islands. “If the data also originate from Zurich, the Swiss banking law also applies. We don’t know precisely, however, what was on the CDs,” Marti told the court. He ordered the public prosecution service and Julius Baer to prove the origins of the data on the disk, placing the onus on the Swiss bank to publish client data. Swiss bank secrecy has come under global attack in recent years, as cash-strapped governments seek to boost revenue by cracking down on tax cheats. Switzerland last year gave details of about 4,450 UBS accounts to U.S. authorities as part of a deal to settle a tax probe into its biggest bank despite strict secrecy laws.

London didn’t give me enough notice Tad Stoner tad.stoner@ieyenews.com
Continued from front page “It was not until the 27th of September that Minister Bellingham publicly announced the consultation process,” he said. “I trust that demonstrates that neither was I in a position to determine the timing of this consultation process, nor was I in a position to advise the public about it any sooner than it was done. The whole process was controlled by the FCO, not me, not my government.” He accused both Mr Wilson and Leader of the Opposition Alden McLaughlin of “misleading the country”, saying the former was guilty of “gross misrepresentation” and latter sought to “undermine people’s confidence” in government. Replying, Mr Wilson rejected the criticism, saying the offending editorial had been ‘aimed at all the sitting members of the LA who promise transparency and open government”, and quoting United Democratic Party MLA Ellio Solomon saying “people have a right to know”. “Why didn’t Mr Bush make known his disappointment at the [FCO’s consultation] timetable?” Mr Wilson asks in today’s editorial. Had Mr Bush announced earlier that he was “still fighting to push back the date for agreement to June 2012, I would have applauded him,” he writes. In his LA speech, the premier rejected Mr Wilson’s charges that his administration had been “secretive”, and dismissed similar 10 November statements by North Side MLA Ezzard Miller. He cited “1,366 Freedom of Information requests“ since June 2009, 50% of which were granted, and “84 press releases from my office” since February 2010, “several press conferences and several public statements”. “We may not always give Mr. Wilson the information he wants by his deadline, but we do make information available to the public,” he said. “All I ask is if someone is going to criticise the government, then at least get the facts straight.” to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Responding, Mr Wilson says the premier “has known me a long time and should know better -- I have never ever distorted facts. I have made mistakes,” he admits, but had always apologised. Turning the charges back, Mr Wilson accuses the premier of distorting the dates of various meetings and newspaper stories, wondering how, according to Mr Bush, iNews had published Mr Milller’s remarks a week before he made them. Finishing his Wednesday LA address, Mr Bush said he sought to involve as many people as possible in

the consultation, and promised the Cayman report would reflect broad public opinion at this week’s Overseas Territories Conference in London. “I will also venture to state that the various strategies employed to communicate with the Caymanian populace are unrivaled within the Overseas Territories. “We will push for a true partnership,” he said, seeking “a definition of principles and a timeframe for an agreement. “We do our utmost for the betterment of Cayman, and we have no fear of accountability for the service we render.”

Bank holds banquet for Unsung Hero
Unsung Hero Dorothy Scott, (5th from left) with members of the Unsung Hero Committee
Christopher Tobutt christopher.tobutt@ieyenews.com
Mrs Dorothy Scott was the proud winner of CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank (Cayman) Ltd Unsung Heroes competition. Her success was celebrated in style when many people came to the banquet held in her honour, at the Marriott Hotel Elvis Coward, Unsung Heroes Programme Coordinator for CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank said: “Today we publicly celebrate Miss Scott’s selfless contribution to the Cayman Community and the lives that she has touched.” The region-wide programme has grown considerably since beginning with just four countries in 2003. “It’s now a region-wide initiative in all 17 countries where the bank has a presence,” Mr Coward said. “The programme is not about the canonisation of individuals but

an attempt by the bank to discover and herald those individuals in the community who without fanfare or fame or fortune have for long periods of time worked hard to uplift, enlighten and assist their neighbours in the business of living,” Mr. Coward continued. “To be eligible for nomination individuals must show dedication to a cause which benefits their community, must not have a high media profile, and the cause that they are championing could benefit from the exposure,” Mr. Coward said. During the evening, the bank formally announced the donation of $6,000 to a cause championed by Mrs Scott- in this case, the First Baptist Church. “From an early age, Mrs Scott was involved in a number of charitable and community-oriented causes in the Cayman Islands, and still continues to this day. She took care of seniors and indigent individuals who had no one

to take care of them – provided meals, groceries, clothing, and monetary funds,” Mr. Coward said. “She has also been a mentor to young children and young women. She has assisted needy students monetarily and is known to have played a significant role in raising funds for a family who fell upon unforeseen circumstances due to the loss of a loved one. “In addition to raising her own kids, she has taken additional children to live in her home on both a shortterm and long-term basis. I’m told that her kids never knew if they were going to have an additional brother or sister overnight. “Mrs Scott donates food to nonprofit organisations who in turn distribute it to needy persons in the Cayman Islands. In this way, she quietly assists persons who would not know if the assistance came from her,” Mr. Coward said.

Judge orders press away from Hugh Grant’s ex, baby LONDON (AP) — A British judge has ordered paparazzi to stay away from Hugh Grant’s ex, Tinglan Hong, who says she has been harassed and hounded since she had a baby with the actor. High Court justice Michael Tugendhat said Chinese-born Hong has been followed and photographed outside her London home and feels that “her life has become unbearable.” “She has had to cancel appointments, including ones for her child. She is frightened to drive with her child because the distraction makes it unsafe,” the judge said. He said he had granted an injunction “prohibiting harassment” of Hong and her daughter.
The injunction was granted last week, and Tugendhat outlined his reasons for it on Friday. Grant’s spokeswoman confirmed earlier this month that the actor had recently fathered a child after a brief fling, and he and 31-year-old Hong remain on good terms. The judge said the pair “did their best to keep private” the fact that they had a child, “and do not know how the information reached the public domain.” Grant, who built a career playing bumbling British charmers, has become a high-profile campaigner against media intrusion into the private lives of celebrities.

Idaho man charged with trying to assassinate Obama BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho man accused of firing an assault rifle at the White House believed he was Jesus and thought President Barack Obama was the Antichrist, according to court documents and those who knew him. At one point, he even suggested to an acquaintance the president was planning to implant computer tracking chips into children. Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez, 21, was charged Thursday with attempting to assassinate the president or his staff. He is accused of firing nine rounds at the White House last Friday night — one of them
cracking a window of the first family’s living quarters — when Obama and the first lady were away. If convicted, Ortega faces up to life in prison. Ortega was arrested Wednesday at a western Pennsylvania hotel when a desk clerk there recognized him and called police. Ortega’s public defender, Christopher Brown, declined comment after his first court hearing in Pennsylvania. Ortega’s mother has said he has no history of mental illness, though when authorities were looking for him, they reported he had “mental health issues.”
Kimberly Allen, the mother of Ortega’s former fiancee, said he had been well-mannered and kind in the four years she had known him. But he recently began making statements to her daughter that were out of character, including that he believed he was Jesus. Oscar Ortega
Pakistan bans ‘obscene’ words on cell phone texts ISLAMABAD (AP) — Texters in Pakistan better start watching their language. Pakistan’s telecommunications authority sent a letter ordering cell phone companies to block text messages containing what it perceives to be obscenities, Anjum Nida Rahman, a spokeswoman for Telenor Pakistan, said Friday. It also sent a list of more than 1,500 English and Urdu words that were to be blocked. The order was part of the regulator’s attempt to block spam messages, said Rahman. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority refused to blog visit www.ieyenews.com
to comment on the initiative. Many of the words to be blocked were sexually explicit terms or swear words, according to a copy of the list obtained by The Associated Press. It also included relatively mild terms like fart and idiot. The reasons for blocking some words, including Jesus Christ, headlights and tampon, were less clear, raising questions about religious freedom and practicality. Any word could conceivably be part of a spam message. The letter, which was also obtained by the AP, was dated Nov. 14 and gave cell phone companies seven days to
implement the order. Rahman, the Telenor spokeswoman, said her company first received the letter Thursday and was discussing how to proceed. “It’s a big issue, so it is being examined carefully from all points of view,” said Rahman.

OPINIONS
The Editor speaks
Reply to Premier’s attack Well, I have got my just desserts. In my Editorial of colin.wilson@ieyenews.com Nov. 11th titled “Deaf Ears”, I complained no one was listening. I said, “Our paid politicians ignore the editorials. They don’t care what we say. Only one time did our premier write to me concerning something I had written and we gave his comments prominent place. I applaud the fact he did it.” My editorial of Nov. 8th titled “Tell Me the Old, Old Story” did not fall on deaf ears. It certainly upset our premier, Hon McKeeva Bush as he attacked iNews Cayman and me in particular in the L.A on Thursday (17) when he hit out at critics regarding the limited period of time given for the public to consult over the UK’s proposed 2012 White Paper on the relationship between Britain and the Overseas Territories. The paragraph Mr. Bush took exception to was this: “A case in point is the review of Britain’s relationship with the overseas territories and how our premier has handled it. Hon. McKeeva Bush knew about the required public consultation in March and did not announce it until October. Why? There has to be a reason. The membership committee’s formation was executed BEHIND CLOSED DOORS! The matter was not even brought to the Legislative Assembly (LA) for debate. Now there is a mad rush to conduct the meetings and as Opposition leader, Alden McLaughlin, has said, “People do not have the opportunity to understand the issues that matter, never mind go on to make a constructive contribution. People are being deprived of a proper opportunity to make representations.”’ Mr. Bush opened his attack by saying “Mr. Colin Wilson also jumped on the misinformation bandwagon with an editorial in the November 8th edition of the I-News, in which he accused me of not telling the country about the public consultation until the eleventh hour.” He then quoted the whole of the preceding paragraph concluding with, “I table a copy of that editorial. Madam Speaker, if people are being deprived of the opportunity to make representations that is not of my doing. Let me make it perfectly clear Madam Speaker, the public consultation process on the UK’s relationship with the Overseas Territories is not an undertaking by me or the Cayman Islands Government. This review and consultation is at the behest of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The
Colin Wilson
iThought 10
Cayman Islands Government through the Cabinet Office facilitated that survey of local views, but it is the FCO that initiated review of the White Paper, and the consultation has been placed within the time-frame set by them. It is the FCO that decided when to announce the public consultation, it is the FCO that drew up the questions to be asked, it is the FCO that is driving the entire consultation process. I could not announce or begin the consultation process without the Terms of Reference, which the FCO has determined.” Mr. Bush supported his point by quoting from a news release sent by the Governor’s office dated 28th Sept., a letter from Minister Bellingham dated 9th March (Mr. Bush said, “This letter does not make any mention of a public consultation. The letter detailed the three strands of the OT strategy and it says the Foreign Secretary plans to present the thinking outlined in the letter to the National Security Council ‘this spring’), various statements he made in the L.A., a quote from Rt. Hon William Hague (UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs [FCO]) and another letter from Minister Bellingham dated 16th Sept. which was the first time he was asked to obtain responses from a consultation process that includes as many people of the Cayman Islands as possible by November 18th.” Mr. Bush was not finished with me there, saying: “As for Colin Wilson’s editorial, Mr. Wilson should know that good journalists research their story to get the facts, and, they have an obligation to get both sides of the story - something he obviously needs to practice. I consider myself a student of history and I believe that there is good reason why news reports should be as accurate as possible. That editorial is likely to end up in an archive somewhere, and sometime in the future someone will read an editorial that distorts what actually happened. “In his editorial Mr. Wilson referred to the UDP Government as “the most secretive of any administration I have known in the thirty years I have lived here.” Madam Speaker, I’ve been around politics since I was 17, that is longer than 30 years, and I know much more about the modus operandi of governments over the years than he ever will. This Government is the most secretive administration in 30 years? That is a gross misrepresentation to say the least.” Continued on page 17

Call for secret service police protection
The subject of secret service protection for the highest ranking government officials in the Cayman Islands (exempting the governor and Premier and Deputy) is being ignored, overlooked to the detriment of the country and its local and national security. It is unfortunate and I feel saddened that our former Chief secretary and deputy governor the former Hon. George McCarthy and his family has had to endure so much pain and disruption, and inconvenience at this time in his life. Mr. McCarthy our former Deputy Governor is now the CIMA Chairman of the Monitory Authority, this is an exceptionally high ranking post and its time consideration be made for the implementation of some sort of 24 hour secret service police protection for high ranking government officials in our society. For the planning department and or residents in his neighborhood to suggest that the fence that Mr. McCarthy constructed to secure his home to protect his family from burglars who targeted his home, masked and unmasked. They also stalked and staked out his home lay waiting in more than one vehicle outside his home. This is very serious conditions one should be expected to not live under. For residents nearby to suggest that Mr. McCarthy’s fence he constructed to protect his home and family would not only be a sore eye but send a bad message that there is crime in Cayman is not only inaccurate but totally insane and out of touch with reality. There is much more crime taking place in Cayman than is being reported and to deny a citizen of these islands the right to protect himself from criminals is not only unfair but cruel. I think that the planning department should have been more considerate and more respectful seeing that Mr. McCarthy is a former Deputy Governor of the Cayman Islands, a man of integrity, good morals and exceptional good judgment having proven himself to blog visit www.ieyenews.com
as a well respected individual in our society. In my opinion as a former highest ranking civil servant Mr. McCarthy is well qualified for body guard or Cayman Islands or British secret service police protection the same as in other countries who take care of and protect high ranking officials. It is high time that the Cayman Islands government security systems stop playing games with people who hold, or formerly held very important offices in our government, since they are at a very high risk for many different reasons. Sometimes they are threatened by phone calls or anonymous letters. As Mr. McCarthy is a former Chief Secretary and Financial secretary and Deputy Governor, these are very high ranking positions and it is irresponsible on the part of the UK to turn a blind eye or allow our Cayman Islands government to not provide and put in place the much needed security measures, to protect civil servants of these high ranks from hoodlums and criminals who may be used to carry out the orders of crooked politicians who may want to target these former civil servants in hope of covering up some of their unscrupulous or greedy sins dating back to way back when or where, we’ll probably never know. I am convinced that the former Deputy Governor is being targeted.
George A. McCarthy
In lieu of the manner in which the country is being run and the number of anti-corruption cases mounting, there are greedy sharks out there that will do anything and everything to cover up their wrongdoing even if it means targeting innocent and honest people. I call on the FCO Minister Mr. Billingham in the UK to instruct the Cayman Islands government to provide some sort of secret service 24 hours a day protection for these high ranking level officials such as the former Hon. Mr. George McCarthy who was former Deputy Governor of the Cayman Islands and is now the CIMA Chairman of the Monitory Authority. We look pretty stupid and irresponsible in the eyes of the world having these people move around in and amongst our society unprotected. Its time to change that situation and make things right. Its is high time for the UK to ensure that the Cayman Islands now move into maturity in our local and national security systems and concede to the global standards of local and national security for our country and for our people. The governor, the Premier and the deputy premier are not the only high ranking officials that need protection in the Cayman Islands. We call on the UK to act quickly in this matter. Philippines arrests ex-president in hospital room
Gloria Macapagal Arroyo
MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was arrested in her hospital room on electoral fraud charges Friday in a high-profile tug of war set off by her attempts to leave the country ostensibly for medical treatment. Arroyo became the second exPhilippine president to face trial, after her ousted predecessor Joseph Estrada was sentenced to life in prison for corruption and later pardoned by her. Arroyo denies any wrongdoing and accuses the government of political persecution when it stopped her from leaving the Philippines for overseas medical treatment for a bone ailment. Her lawyer, Ferdinand Topacio, said the government had filed fabricated charges with “indecent haste.” The Supreme Court earlier Friday upheld her right to travel, but a lower court where the formal charges were filed later issued an arrest warrant that effectively bars her from leaving. Arroyo, 64, has been recovering in a hospital since her failed attempt to leave the country Tuesday, and Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said she will remain confined to her hospital room. “They are not going to, let’s say, handcuff her and take her out of the room,” de Lima said. “We will not object to hospital arrest.” In a drama that has galvanized the Philippines, Arroyo, sitting in a wheelchair and wearing a head and neck brace, was turned back Tuesday night from boarding a flight out of Manila. Authorities said she was still under investigation and might become a fugitive. Her successor and staunch critic,

Hundreds of protesters shout slogans and display messages against former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo
President Benigno Aquino III, was overwhelmingly elected on promises to rid the Philippines of corruption and has said he wants to start with Arroyo. The former president sought help from the Supreme Court, which issued a temporary clearance for her to travel and reaffirmed it Friday. But the government ignored the order, saying national interest and uncovering the truth were more important than an individual’s right to travel. “It is our desire that truth and accountability prevail and that the Filipino people be given the justice they truly deserve,” de Lima told reporters. “Justice has been served. It’s very relieving,” she said. The election fraud charges filed Friday by the Commission on Election carry a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison. Arroyo legal spokesman Raul Lambino said the case against her “is a high form of injustice.” The charges stem from allegations that Arroyo conspired with officials to tamper with results of 2007 congressional polls to favor her candidates. She was accused of having direct knowledge of massive cheating in an autonomous Muslim region in the southern Philippines, the country’s poorest and notoriously corrupt region, where ballot boxes are switched en masse and voters paid or threatened to abstain. A probe this year by the Senate Electoral Tribunal found that an Arroyo ally, Miguel Zubiri, benefited from fake ballots. He resigned
his Senate seat in favor of an opposition candidate. Two witnesses — an election supervisor and a former governor of the Muslim region — have alleged that Arroyo and her husband ordered election rigging to favor administration candidates like Zubiri. Also charged Friday were exelection supervisor Lintang Bedol, who is in government custody and wants to turn state witness, and Andal Ampatuan Sr., the former Muslim regional governor and patriarch of a powerful clan. Ampatuan, a former Arroyo ally, is on trial for allegedly ordering the 2009 massacre of 57 people, including 32 journalists and political opponents in the country’s worst political bloodbath. During her tumultuous nine-year presidency from 2001 to 2010, Arroyo ranked as the country’s least popular leader and faced down several coup and impeachment attempts over corruption allegations. Her most serious crisis came a year after she was elected in 2004, when a wiretapped recording surfaced of her talking to an election official allegedly about securing a vote margin for herself. She later apologized but said she did nothing wrong. After stepping down last year, Arroyo, 64, was elected to the House of Representatives and immediately faced at least half a dozen legal complaints, including allegations that she diverted state funds for her campaign effort and benefited from foreign contracts. The Justice Department is still investigating the other complaints. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

OPINIONS
The Editor speaks Reply to Premier’s attack “I have never distorted facts”
Finally, Mr. Bush mentions Colin Wilson our ‘ACE’ reporter, Tad colin.wilson@ieyenews.com Stoner during another Continued from page 10 blast: “How can Mr. Wilson call this Government the most secretive administration when his ace reporter Tad Stoner often talks to me personally and is able to quote me directly? We may not always give Mr. Wilson the information he wants by his deadline but we do make information available to the public. All I ask is if someone is going to criticise the Government, then at least get the facts straight.” First of all let me thank Mr. Bush for responding, although I did not expect my comments would be tabled in the L.A. It certainly prompted the most calls I have ever received from the public, most being strangers. The editorial he is so upset at was not aimed at Mr. Bush personally. It was aimed at all the sitting members of the L.A. who in their election speeches promised transparency and open government. In every political election rally I have attended with my wife, Joan (Watler) Wilson (the publisher of iNews Cayman), every candidate has shouted this. I referred especially to George Town MLA, Ellio Solomon, who was oft outspoken on Rooster’s “Crosstalk” against the previous PPM Government for being “secretive.” He correctly said, “people have a right to know.” If, and I am not doubting Mr. Bush, he is correct and he did not know until 14th September, why has he waited until now to correct the statements made in the L.A. by MLAs Mr. Ezzard Miller and Hon. Alden McLaughlin that suggested otherwise and we reported. Why didn’t Mr. Bush make known his disappointment at the timetable the FCO had set and his government was “still fighting to push back the date for agreement on the paper to June next year as the UK aims to bring it forward”? I would have applauded him. We report what we are told by MLAs. Aren’t they all supposed to be informed? Good journalists certainly do research their stories to get the facts. We pride ourselves we do this. If no one returns our phone calls or refuses to answer our questions we can only report what we have. That is the problem with people being secretive. This newspaper has ALWAYS published both sides and will continue to do so. I am grieved the Premier hinted we don’t do this and I take great exception to his statement “someone will read an editorial that distorts what actually happened.” to blog visit www.ieyenews.com
Mr. Bush has known me a long time and should know better - I have never ever distorted facts!! I am not perfect by any means and I have made many mistakes. When I am wrong I say so. I am not afraid to do that. I never have been. When this newspaper has erred we say so. During the seventeen years I was in charge at CITN-Cayman 27, has Mr. Bush ever known me not to say I am sorry if the TV station was wrong? Did I ever distort any news story we aired? In fact I stopped many a story going out that I was “not happy at its contents.” As for checking facts I am puzzled at Mr. Bush’s very first mention of our newspaper in his L.A. speech: “The I-News of November 3, 2010 reported that the Member for North Side at a public meeting on November 2 said, quote: “I am disappointed with the secrecy that has surrounded this effort, and that fault lies with only one person: the Premier. He has known since November 10. Why has he not conducted this publicly?” Unquote. I lay a copy of that news article on the table of the House.” Perhaps Mr. Bush would like to recheck his dates. The dates stated do not add up. For a start iNews Cayman (I expect he is referring to our Cayman iNews as there are others publications with the same name) did not start publishing until May 2nd 2011. Even if the year is wrong and he meant 2011 how could we report something on Nov. 3rd that wasn’t said until Nov 10? I wish we had that capability. As Mr. Bush said news reports should be as accurate as possible . Shouldn’t the same be said to statements made in the L.A.? Thank you Mr. Bush for setting the record straight. I do not have your years of political experience here or your insight. I place on record you do return our Ace reporter’s calls in a timely manner that we cannot say for all politicians or their representatives. I think you will agree we do not distort nor misrepresent your statements. I hope this relationship continues.

Clifton Nevis Bodden remembers Part 1 As told to Christopher Tobutt In this, the first in a series of articles, 88 year old World War II veteran Clifton Nevis Bodden remembers life in the Cayman Islands Home Guard. “I was born in Cuba in 1923. You see, my parents, who came from Cayman, worked for the American companies down there on the Citrus farms on the Isle of Pines. The Caymanians went over there to work with the Americans because they had quite a number of farms over there but when the World War started, the fruit business was going down because we couldn’t get the fruits across to Florida because the submarines were sinking ships hand-over-fist. So everybody said: ‘Lets get out.’ “I came to Cayman in February, 1942 with my parents. When I came here to Cayman they were enlisting men for the service for the Home Guard. My parents were from Cayman. “The Commanding Officer at that time was Sergeant Highfield – he was from Canada, and he came here to train us. Then there was Captain Joseph Roddy Watler - he was a Captain and we worked under him. “We had an American naval base over here and we would work with the navy. My instructor from the navy was a man by the name of Jack Cohen, an American because they started to train us with the Artillery. “Right where the dock is now, the barracks were there and the headquarters were right where you see the West Wind building now, and the Navy had the base right behind the Library. Where the Assembly building is now, that was the parade ground for the Home Guard, and that’s where we used to take our training. We had two naval landing guns and we used to do the training there. One of those shells used to weigh 13 pounds. “We had plenty of submarines back and forth, so the United States established a base here. They also had seaplanes that used to pitch in the North Sound, and then they were fuelled up and serviced. Around four or five o’clock in the morning they’d take off and they’d go way out to the

Mr. Bodden explained that although the Home Guard was British, the Home Guard soldiers trained in the use of artillery under the American navy. “We had two big guns, one was right in front of where Norberg had his bakery there, and the other one was right on the edge, where they’ve

Commissioner Jones ordered the Cimboco to go out there and pick up the survivors, and some of them were all burnt up and so on. They put them on the seaplanes and they took them to the States for treatment. To be continued… to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Police hunt escaped convict Police have now released the name and a picture of the man who escaped from police custody. Charlton Bengar Ebanks, aged 21, escaped from his police guard at the Cayman Islands Hospital shortly after 7.00 am Thursday morning (17 November 2011) . Ebanks had been arrested on Wednesday (16 November) in connection with a road-traffic offence and an outstanding warrant. He had been detained for treatment at the Cayman Islands Hospital overnight as a result of injuries sustained in a single vehicle road crash in West Bay on Wednesday afternoon. Ebanks, who is described as being 5’ 11’ in height with brown eyes, dark complexion, black hair and of slim build, is not believed to be a danger to the public. However, anyone who sees this man, or knows of his present whereabouts, is urged to contact their nearest police station. The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service has launched an investigation into all of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Two men in custody, handgun recovered
Two men have been arrested and are presently detained in police custody following a road crash, a police chase on foot and the recovery of a handgun. Around 3:25am (Friday, 18 November 2011) officers from the RCIPS Uniform Support Group were on routine patrol in the area close to the Grand Pavilion, West Bay Road. At this time the officers’ attention was drawn to a suspicious vehicle making off from
the location. The car drove along West Bay Road towards George Town and turned onto the Esterley Tibbetts Highway towards West Bay. Then, at a point close to the rear of the Ritz Carlton, the car collided with a road barrier. As the police vehicle approached the scene of the crash two men made off from the car. Officers pursued one of the men into
the bush area. The male was detained and a handgun with ammunition was recovered nearby. He has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an unlicensed firearm. No shots were discharged and no-one was injured. The second man from the car was arrested a short time later on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident. Both men remain in police custody while inquiries continue.
Thief whacked with cup An armed thief wearing a Halloween mask tried to rob a married couple in George Town. But the thief was whacked over the head by the man he tried to rob and fled empty handed. A spokeswoman for the RCIPS said: “At approximately 11.00 pm on Wednesday a married couple were returning to their address in Palm Dale

Avenue, George Town. “As they were entering their porch area, an unknown male appeared from the yard and demanded money. The offender was wearing a long sleeve shirt, black denim pants, black gloves and a Halloween mask. He was holding what appeared to be a hand gun. “As the offender went to search a bag,
the male victim struck the offender to the head with a cup. This disorientated the offender who then fled on foot. No property was stolen and the victims were uninjured. “Anyone with any information should contact George Town CID on 949-4222, the RCIPS tip-line 949-7777, or Crime Stoppers 800-8477 (TIPS).”

Football: Calderon hat trick eases Bodden Town past Future Andrew Zarczynski info@ieyenews.com
The Cayman Premier League hosted two rescheduled mid-week fixtures on Wednesday. Bodden Town took on Future whilst Roma hosted George Town. Bodden Town hit Future for six and solidified their position in the top three in the league standings. Bodden Town now join Elite in the goals for category, both teams boast a scoring total of 23 goals so far this season after seven games. Bodden Town’s Yefry Calderon led the scoring for BT registering a hat trick against Future, Arvid Harris, Charlo Mclean and Jorronie Mclean also got their names on the score sheet for Bodden Town. Ormond Moore responded with a solo consolation goal for Future. Bodden Town will host Tigers FC this Sunday at the Bodden Town field whilst
Future faces another strong test as they head to the Annex to take on George Town SC. George Town SC will be hoping that their 3:0 win over Roma United on Wednesday night will kick start their season. George Town has been up and down this season but the signs of consistency seem to be coming back. George Town controlled the game against Roma and went about the business of claiming a much needed 3 points early on when David Harding opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Harding then turned provider on the 20th minute mark as his cross found Cayman Islands International Tex Whitelocke who was lurking at the far post. Tex slid in to notch his second goal of the season and give GT a 2:0 lead. A few minutes later George Town forward Justin Pierre teed up Harding who completed his brace when he stuck a beautiful volley from
just outside the box. Roma battled on well but failed to close the deficit and after starting the season with two consecutive wins Roma have now lost four of their last five. Unfortunately it does not get any easier for Roma as they meet current league Champions Elite SC this Sunday. Elite have been churning out results ever since their opening week loss to Roma, Ironically this has been the only loss Elite have encountered this season. Cayman Athletic will face league leading Scholars International this Sunday in the final fixture of Week 8. Scholars draw against Future in Week 7 was seen as two points lost for them and they will be determined to get back to winning ways. Second place Elite SC are now only one point behind the leaders. Cayman Athletic currently sit just one place above bottom side Future after only picking up 4 points from a possible 21.

Blatter says sorry for racism remark, won’t resign

LONDON (AP) — Sepp Blatter said Friday he is “sorry’ for offending anyone by his comments on racism in soccer but will not resign as FIFA president. Blatter told the BBC in an interview in Zurich that he “deeply regretted” using “unfortunate words” earlier this week, when he said any racist abuse on the soccer field could be settled by a handshake at the end of the match. “When you have done something which was not totally correct, I can only say I am sorry for all those people affected by my declarations,” Blatter said Friday. “It hurts and I am still hurting because I couldn’t envisage such a reaction.” Blatter, who was re-elected to a four-year term in June, has faced calls in Britain for his resignation but ruled out leaving his post. “I cannot resign,” he told the BBC. “Why should I? To leave would be totally unfair and not compatible with my fighting spirit, my character, my energy.” Blatter insisted his “fight against racism and discrimination will go on.” He also said any players found guilty of racism on the pitch should be thrown out of the game. “Zero tolerance,” he said. “This was a good lesson for me as well.” British Prime Minister David Cameron joined the wave of condemnation of Blatter on Thursday, saying “it’s appalling to suggest that racism in any way should be accepted as part of the game.”
