Preston Rivers has become the latest victim of a murder spree that’s spiralling way out of control. Now the upper echelons of Cayman power have vowed to put an end to the mindless violence that has seen three people killed in less than a week. After a high level meeting between Premier McKeeva Bush, Commissioner David Baines and
Governor Duncan Taylor, one proposal discussed is to employ a gang curfew. iNews is the first paper to bring you the message delivered by Baines late yesterday afternoon. Speaking on the steps of the Government Administration Building the RCIPS Commissioner said: “Our challenge is to block and stop further retaliation and get in between the Logwoods and Birch Tree Hill gangs.
“The offenders are now moving further afield to target their victims. “All it takes are two or three toxic individuals to escalate this to a level never seen before. All the police know what further action we need to do. “In each murder there are at least two gunmen and two separate weapons. We have evidence of a shotgun, a semi-automatic pistol and a revolver being used.

World eating champ defends title at Ohio contes CINCINNATI (AP) — The top-ranked competitive eater in the world and reigning king of the World Bratwurst Eating Championship has defended his title in Cincinnati, washing down 35 brats in 10 minutes. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Joey “Jaws” Chestnut approaches the contest like a sport. Chestnut, a construction manager in San Jose, Calif., says he prepares by fasting for two to three days before the contest, which took place at Oktoberfest Zinzinnati, North America’s largest Oktoberfest. The 10 male competitors put away 170 brats in 10 minutes Saturday during the officially sanctioned contest. One observer called the contest “pretty wild” and said he didn’t know whether to throw up or get a brat for himself. For his victory, Chestnut won $2,000 and a golden OktoberfestZinzinnati chicken hat.
No jet lag for 120 donkeys after Hawaii-LA flight TEHACHAPI, Calif. (AP) — Most people have been on a plane with a few jackasses before. But 10 dozen donkeys on one flight? One hundred and twenty donkeys have arrived at a sanctuary in California on a plane from Hawaii chartered by the Humane Society of the United States. Tracy Miller, manager of Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue in Tehachapi, said Sunday the donkeys are “none the worse for wear” after the long flight and a two-hour drive Saturday that followed it. They are descendants of donkeys brought to Hawaii’s Big Island to work coffee plantations then cast aside when they became obsolete. Recent drought conditions have brought hundreds of donkeys down from the mountains into developed Hawaii, where they have disrupted traffic and made other trouble for humans, inspiring a search for new homes.

On the subject of a curfew or no-go areas, Mr Baines said: “We have to design it specifically and the challenge is we have to police it. “The problem is the gang members are not there anymore. They are hiding in fear of retaliation and they know we are looking for them. They have got their heads down. Police say three suspects have been arrested in connection with the murders. One has been released and two remain in custody. Governor Taylor echoed his comments adding: “We are looking at changing the firearms law. If the police suspect there are drugs; they can go in without a warrant and the burden of proof is on the person inside to explain. “That does not apply to firearms. Can we look around to change the firearms law so the burden of proof is on the property owners so the police can go in immediately? “I have the power to order a cordon or curfew and I’m happy to do so if the Commissioner of Police reaches that decision.” Police say they are moving swiftly - recruiting just under 50 additional positions within the Force including firearms officers, surveillance and investigations officers and a high level forensic manager to oversee them. The Governor will meet today at 3pm with the crime fighting National Security Council. They also plan to have a response team armed with Tasers and a “dropin” team for vulnerable areas.

Premier Bush said: “Our homes must be defiled no longer for our hearts are broken. “The growing trend of violence in our country has been recognisable for many years… leading up to the senseless executions which we are witnessing today. “We as a Government have done all we can do and still stand willing to do even more. Enough is enough and we need action NOW.” At just 18 years old Preston Rivers had his whole life ahead of him. But late on Saturday night the teenager was shot dead – the third person to be killed in West Bay in less than a week. Andrew Baptist was killed on Thursday night. Two days before Robert Bush was shot dead as he sat in a car. Just after 10pm on Saturday night police were called after Rivers was killed on Andresen Road outside a condominium complex. One of the suspects was male, five foot ten, dressed in a blue polo short with white stripes and a blue shirt
covering his face. Persons who may have information that can assist the Team with their investigations can contact the “Murder Investigation Team at these two mobile numbers. 926-1773 or 925-6761 Alternatively, persons with information can speak to any officer at any of the RCIPS’ Stations or Crime stoppers 800TIPS (8477) if they wish to remain anonymous. Meanwhile, in relation to the incident on Saturday afternoon 17th September 2011 where a section of the Esterley Tibbets Highway Bypass was closed to facilitate a search for a wanted male, Police can now confirm a 26-year-old male was arrested on Suspicion of Possession of an Unlicensed Firearm in the George Town area. Police say there is no connection with the recent murders in West Bay, however it is connected to an incident last week in Bodden’s Road, George Town where police recovered a firearm and ammunition.

Statement by HE The Governor on the recent murders in West Bay The murder of Preston Rivers Saturday night, the third such tragic waste of life in five days, appalls all right-minded individuals in the Cayman Islands. The Governor has issued the following statement: “I have been horrified and disgusted to hear of the three brutal murders in just a few days in West Bay this week. This violence is shocking and intolerable. I have today

met with the Commissioner of Police and have spoken to the Premier (overseas on business) and Acting Premier about them. We are deeply concerned by what has happened and are committed to doing everything possible to ensure that the violence stops and that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice. “In response to the murders earlier in the week, the RCIPS increased the
number of uniformed and armed police officers in the West Bay area. The Police Commissioner has informed me that these higher levels will be maintained for the foreseeable future. The RCIPS have also set up dedicated investigative teams to set about the securing of evidence and bringing those responsible to justice. “I want to ensure that we give the Commissioner and the RCIPS every possible assistance in meeting this latest challenge to our security. I have called a meeting first thing tomorrow (Monday) morning with the Premier, the Deputy Governor, the Attorney General, the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Commissioner of Police to explore every possible way, within the law, in which we can deal with this intolerable escalation in violence. We will look very carefully and critically at what we are doing now and consider creatively and

exhaustively the range of other possible options available to us. This level of violence is completely unacceptable and we must and will do whatever is necessary to stop it continuing. That is our priority. “The RCIPS rose to the challenge of dealing with a dreadful series of murders in early 2010; they took firm action against suspects and made a number of arrests which took dangerous individuals off our streets and led to a period of almost a year without a murder. I am confident that the perpetrators of these recent and shocking crimes will be caught and charged too. I will not rest until that happens. “But you can help, too. There are some of you in the community who have information that could help the police apprehend these killers. If you are one of them, I urge you to come forward with this information. It will be treated in confidence. Please do the right thing: help stop this senseless killing and make our communities safer places for us all. If you know where a gun is, tell the Police or Crime Stoppers and you may save a life. I also urge those of you who know family members or friends who are linked to gangs to challenge them and help prevent them engaging with individuals who may ultimately ruin your and your family’s lives.”

“We need action now” says Morgan Tad Stoner tad.stoner@ieyenews.com
His frustration can be measured in equal units of outrage, despair and longing. Ormond Morgan’s of West Bay Action Committee wants something done and after Saturday’s murder of Preston Rivers, they have some ideas. “We made dozens of recommendations to [former Governor] Stuart Jack and the commissioners of police at the time,” he said, “but they all fell on deaf ears, with this combination of ignorance and arrogance. We said that each time you back off these [West Bay gangsters], they regroup and get stronger.” One idea is a correctional camp, housing at-risk teenagers, providing job training, education and militarystyle discipline, for between six years and eight years. “We need a serious talk with the parents, telling them that we will take charge of these kids in a correction centre. They can come and visit them, and if the kids cooperate, could have weekends off,” he said. “The implications for civil liberties? Ask the parents if they would rather have their kids there than dead and buried. We will give them exposure to training, to authority and to the wider world. “We need to treat crime like a business. Look what it’s costing this country. The police just got another $4 million: for what? “We need foot patrols,” he said, asking when anyone last saw a police officer on the street. “We should be buying leather boots instead of new cars.” Echoing the call by robbery victim Casanova Restaurant owner Tony Crescente two weeks ago, Mr Morgan called for patrols on Seven Mile Beach: “You need a half-dozen canine cops walking around in all directions on Seven Mile Beach. “We need an ‘SSD’ law, stop, search and detain, a force fully equipped with sniffer dogs and random checks on everyone. “Even Military Police (MP), had a role. They can be staking out a place at 2am. If you see MPs at 2am at the to blog visit www.ieyenews.com
George Town Post Office, it keeps the criminals on their toes. You come in with sirens and cars, they have no idea where to go.” To get guns off the street, Mr Morgan said, “You need a special experienced force to come in.” While stopping short of demanding the RCIPS repeat their 2010 importation of UK officers to stem a crime wave, he called for up to 80 officers to stand guard. “I’m no Communist sympathiser,” he said, “but how can people be so safe in Cuba with 12 million people? They have maximum respect for the police there and no one jokes with them. “We need a comprehensive review of the whole system, and not just talk. We need action now. The police, are like a peacekeeping force. They have limited authority. They need to go out and be pro-active.” The police were not solely to blame, however, he said. Change requires a “comprehensive dialogue”.
Mr Morgan recognised the efforts of RCIPS Detective Superintendent Marlon Bodden, in overall charge of last weeks’ investigations and passionate about stopping the violence. “We need a half-a-dozen Marlon Boddens in place to take charge of this,” Mr Morgan said, “That is why we need a comprehensive review and meetings with the public. Nothing is going to get better ‘till the police sit down with them.”

face-crooks Gang uses site to talk about violence

A sickening Facebook site glorifying the actions of gangs in West Bay is being watched by murder squad detectives. “Logwoodz [sic] Dons” is an active page on the social networking site. It has messages on the wall of the page, where members can write their thoughts, directed at the recent spate of murders to hit the area. Logwoods is one part of West Bay which has been blighted by crime in the past week. The dispute is over rivalry with the Birch Tree Hill area nearby. Recently posted on the page is a photograph of a number of young men including Robert Bush – who was the first victim, murdered seven days ago. A message added to the page just a few days after Bush was murdered reads: “21 Gun Salute for a real General Robert Bush aka Noble aka Robbie.” A 21 gun salute is often used at
funerals to mark the deaths of soldiers or heroes killed in battle. The current profile picture on the page has a message that reads: “Say Nutin [sic]” – which could be a message meaning say nothing, in reference to helping the authorities solve the crime spree. Another image shows a handgun while members post pictures of themselves on the site making gangland hand gestures. The weapon is s .22 calibre Derringer made by Sundance Industries. The use of social networking sites to document gangland culture is not a new phenomenon. In England after rioters went on the rampage destroying parts of major cities, many of them posted photographs of themselves carrying stolen goods on Facebook and Twitter pages. This eventually led to a number of arrests as many of the looters kept their faces on the pictures.

Rescuers in choppers reach Himalaya quake villages to villages, airlifted a medical team, evacuated the injured and conducted damage assessments, Indian Home Secretary R.K. Singh said. Heavy construction equipment was used to clear some of the blocked roads, he said. “The rescue and relief operations are in full swing though they were hampered ... by poor weather,” he said. At least 32 people died and 100 others were injured in the northeastern Indian state of Sikkim, where the quake was centered near India’s border with Nepal, Singh said. At least 10 of those killed worked for the same hydroelectric project, he said. It was
not immediately clear how they died. Seven other people were killed the neighboring Indian states of Bihar and West Bengal, he said.

GANGTOK, India (AP) — Rescue workers in helicopters and earth movers raced Monday to reach Indian villages cut off by mudslides after a powerful earthquake killed 53 people and damaged more than 100,000 homes in the remote Himalayan region, officials said. Three emergency workers were killed in the frantic, rain-soaked rescue effort. More than 6,000 troops worked to clear concrete slabs, bricks and mud to rescue scores of people trapped under houses that collapsed when the 6.9-magnitude quake struck the mountainous region Sunday evening. 3-D ‘Lion King’ feels the love with $29.3M opening LOS ANGELES (AP) — It’s 1994 all over again, with a re-release of “The Lion King” opening at the top of the box office. A 3-D version of the wildly popular Disney animated musical earned a surprising $29.3 million in its first weekend in theaters, according to Sunday estimates. The original film made more than $40 million when it opened nationwide 17 years ago. This huge number stunned many people, including the folks at Disney, who figured “The Lion King” would make somewhere between $10 million and $12 million, said Dave Hollis, the studio’s executive vice president of distribution.
He said the movie remains relevant and as entertaining as it was when it first came out. “But taking a page from the movie, there is a ‘circle of life’ thing happening,” he said, referring to one of the film’s themes. “You have children of the ‘90s who are now parents of the 2010s and they themselves are taking their kids to share what was, for them, a great experience two decades ago.” It also helps that there aren’t many options for families at the multiplex right now, said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com.
Obama to propose $1.5 trillion in new tax revenue WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will propose $1.5 trillion in new taxes as part of a plan to identify more than $3 trillion in longterm deficit reduction and slow the nation’s escalating national debt. Obama’s tax plan is aimed predominantly at the wealthy and draws sharp contrasts with congressional Republicans. It comes just days after House Speaker John Boehner ruled out tax increases to lower deficits. It also comes amid a clamor in his own Democratic Party for Obama to take a tougher stance against Republicans. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com
And while the plan stands little chance of passing Congress, its populist pitch is one that the White House believes the public can support. The core of the president’s plan totals just more than $2 trillion in deficit reduction over 10 years. It combines the new taxes with $580 billion in cuts to mandatory benefit programs, including $248 billion from Medicare. The administration also counts savings of $1 trillion over 10 years from the withdrawal of troops from Iraq and Afghanistan. The deficit reduction plan
represents an economic bookend to the $447 billion in tax cuts and new public works spending that Obama has proposed as a short-term measure to stimulate the economy and create jobs.

The Editor speaks
Family, murders, crime, unacceptable violence, silence, schools Colin Wilson
You may wonder what ‘family’ has to do with the other topics in the heading? It would at first sight seem to be nothing. Actually, it has everything. It is our start in life. It is what shapes and moulds us. We are natural mimics. When we are children we are vulnerable to what is around us. Whether we want to admit it or not, it is members of our family who are our mentors. If there is no love in that family, or we as a child do not see or appreciate love, we carry a cross that weighs on us forever. A family doesn’t consist of just relatives. It is who ever you are close to. We can have best friends whom we consider as brothers and sisters. Nearly all of us like to be part of something. Throughout our lives, we like to have friends. We don’t want to be alone. We are almost like a hive of bees. We thrive so much better when we are together. It is this togetherness that makes us into a unit. We take the love from that family with us and we also take the hate that might also present. It is love we seek the most. Immediately after the murder of Andrew Baptist, family member (his brother) William Bodden said (paraphrased) on CITN-Cayman27, “Mr. Baines (RCIPS Police Commissioner), you’re outgunned. You’re not getting the job done. Let’s go to better policing. You’re outgunned – get help!” On a Facebook page ‘Logwoodz Dons’ is an active site glorifying the actions of gangs in West Bay. A message reads: “21 gun salute for a real general, Robert Bush.” Robert Bush was the first of the three victims murdered over the past seven days. The site has over 70 ‘friends’. The site with all these ‘friends’ has smiling faces of ‘members’ of the ‘Logwoodz Dons’ including Robert Bush, show they are all part of a ‘family’. There is a message on the current profile picture page with a message “Say Nutin”. The shocking thing that happened over this weekend is not the murder of Preston Rivers. The most shocking thing is that most of us were not shocked. Another murder in West Bay this weekend was expected. There were even bets being made on the day and hour it was going to happen! H.E. Governor Duncan Taylor issued a strong statement on Sunday (18) assuring Mr. Baines he and the RCIPS will be given ‘ every possible assistance’. We may or not be told what that ‘assistance’ is. The colin.wilson@ieyenews.com
iThought
Governor also appealed to people to come forward who have information. Surely some of you out there who are ‘in the know’ MUST realise by now that keeping silent is making a terrible situation into something worse, war on our streets. Duncan Taylor added that the violence was ‘unacceptable’. Have you seen the photographs in iNews and all the other Cayman newspapers and online news sites showing the anguish and grief on the family and friends of the victims – the GANGLAND MEMBERS? I am neither but after seeing those pictures, I shed tears. And what about our schools? Are they a birthing place for gangs? It was suggested that this was the breeding ground for them at least fifteen years ago, a suggestion hotly denied by some politicians. Looking at it then, when I was at CITN, I had teachers telling me this was the case. Guns were not an issue – only knives and drugs. Now I have been informed that not only do gangs operate in our school system, guns are brought in, and an ‘initiation’ programme is run where a ‘pupil/initiate’ has to actually perform an ‘assignment’ so he or she can be ‘bloodied.’ This is the ‘way-in’ to membership. A former teacher told me that some ‘gangs’ deliberately disrupt classes. If this is true why are we quiet about it and more important what is being done? If it isn’t true, can someone in authority dispel this as only rumour mongering? The Premier, Hon McKeeva Bush, the Governor and the Police Commissioner have been in talks yesterday morning and made a public statement in the afternoon informing us the steps they are taking to end this bloodshed. Ending it we must and sitting down talking about it is over. Action speaks louder than words and it is action we need. NOW! Pur leaders have our support and united we can end this misery. I have a message to all parents and family friends. You have a huge responsibility. Show love and treat children with kindness and teach them what is right. Be an example – a role model. And to all the churches on this Island. Why aren’t you all unified in getting the same message of LOVE out onto the streets? Preaching from a pulpit or podium, quoting Bible sentences in your cozy buildings to your own congregation is not enough. You are preaching mainly to the converted. Go out to these areas of bloodshed in your hundreds (or thousands). Preach the love message there. Would Jesus be closeting himself in a building? We can win this battle but only together.
A faithful friend is an elixir of life; and those who fear the Lord will find him. Ecclesiasticus 6.16

Invest 98L expected to move into the Caribbean this week
In Monday’s (19) iNews I spoke of a tropical disturbance that was located to the southwest of the Cape Verde Islands. That disturbance has now been designated Invest 98L by the National Hurricane Centre and has steadily moved across the Atlantic. There is a belief that the system will strengthen into a Tropical Storm by Wednesday of this week, thereby affecting Barbados and the Windward Islands. Rob Lightbown writes, “Most of the global model guidance do develop 98L into a tropical storm over the next few days, however, the
iCommunity
GFS and European models forecast that this system will weaken into a tropical wave as it tracks across the Lesser Antilles and into the eastern Caribbean from Friday into Saturday.” The system is not expected to develop into more than a tropical Storm though due to a high-pressure system strengthening to the north of this system. Rob warns those in the eastern Caribbean countries to, “please be aware that tropical storm conditions are a possibility starting Thursday night and continuing through all day Friday before slowly diminishing
on Saturday.” For more information on this tropical development and more please visit Crown Weather Services at www.crownweather.com or the National Hurricane Centre at www. nhc.noaa.gov/. iNews wishes to thank Crown Weather for their permission to use their graphics and information. Grange said the establishment of the centre is a top priority for the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, and the Child Development Agency (CDA).
According to Grange, the ministry and the CDA are trying to secure the funds for the project. The minister’s comments follow a series of incidents in which children have been violently killed in recent months or have been the victims of fatal road crashes. A murdered 11-year-old was most recently discovered in Harmons, Manchester. The minister has called for Jamaican families, schools, churches and the wider communities to better monitor and support the nation’s children. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

UCCI seminar talks financial integrity
Simon Culhane, Intergrity at Work facilitator
Christopher Tobutt christopher.tobutt@ieyenews.com
‘Integrity at Work’ was the subject for a recent workshop held at the University College of the Cayman Islands. The seminar focused on integrity issues within the financial industry and was facilitated by Mr. Simon Culhane, Chief Executive Officer of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI). Introducing the topic, Mr. Culhane said, “Openness honesty, transparency and fairness, those are pretty good things to have in your mind if someone says, ‘What is integrity?’” The session kicked off with a look at the factors that cause a financial jurisdiction location to be considered successful. Those factors included: Availability of skilled personnel, regulatory environment, access to customers, and a fair and just business environment. The issue of integrity was crucial, Mr. Culhane said, not just to the individual bank or finance company, but also to the whole of the financial industry. Mr. Cuhane illustrated the first of these assertions by reference to a real-life example of a questionable practice, which brought short-term gains, but greater long-term losses: “Seven or eight years ago Citibank had a group of people who sold and sold government bonds until just before the gong went at the end of the day, and then they brought to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

them all back. “It made that particular group in the firm five or six million pounds - they were delighted…but it cost Citibank in the end eight billion dollars to fix, because that (practice) was considered to be absolutely unfair, unreasonable and misleading …so for them, that short term gain was a big long term loss,” he said. “Is there any empirical evidence that says the industry loses if one or two people are bad?” Mr. Cuhane asked, before going on to describe the events that lead to the ‘economic meltdown,’ beginning with the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers. Mr. Culhane then asked the seminar participants to respond to several different hypothetical dilemmas. Each participant was invited to give an answer relating to each scenario by using the special electronic voting device provided at each desk. The first dilemma involved a junior member of a team in an established financial company who had asked for permission to take time off work to
go to a meal, and a football match, in response to an invitation from a client. The four options were: “Option A - Yes, and I will let my boss know,” “Option B - Yes but he will need to take a day as holiday from his annual allowance,” “Option C- No but I or someone from the firm will go instead,” and “Option D - No.” After voting, the participants were then invited to discuss the criteria used for their decision. Some of the suggested considerations were: “Where is the line between acceptable hospitality and bribery?” and, “How would this be perceived by key stakeholders?” Mr. Culhane concluded the seminar by saying: “Integrity and trust are important and necessary components for firms operating in global centres; the lack of integrity has a real cost to all in the industry; and, Integrity needs to be part of a firm’s culture.” Mr. Culhane finished by quoting the motto of the London Stock Exchange: “Dictum meum pactum – my word is my bond.”

Grads choose immigration Two recent high school graduates have chosen the Department of Immigration as their preferred place of employment. Although from opposite ends of Grand Cayman, Taneisha Welcome and Abbagail Fish both recently completed business studies at the Cayman Islands Further Education Centre. Miss Welcome of East End said she has always been interested in a career with immigration. Similarly, Miss Fish, who is from West Bay, said, “I‘m convinced that by working with this department I can be a part of the change process in the Cayman Islands.” Welcoming the duo, Chief Immigration Officer Linda Evans said, “Both Abbagail and Taneisha have much potential to be a significant part of our team. They have applied themselves and taken initiative – even while they were on work experience. We are always happy to recruit young people who will serve the country with distinction.” From October 2010 through June of this year the ladies attended biweekly work experience sessions

Both young ladies then chose to intern with Immigration this summer. Miss Fish was placed in the Human Resources Department.
Following the internship, they applied for recently-advertised entry-level vacancies. Both were successful with their interviews and are now employed as processing clerks in the Board and Work Permit Administration section. The ambitious duo plan to continue their studies at the Civil Service College, UCCI. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

“In my early years of cancer I joined the society and through this relationship I saw the worth of the organisation to others who had cancer. I have worked with the society in ensuring help for others, in particular when they had to go overseas. The society is irreplaceable and cancer detection and support service has given others a greater chance to survive. The Cancer Society’s role is very important in giving comfort and support to cancer survivors in the Cayman Islands. People are happy to be with and around the society as it gives hope.” Ms. Lucille Seymour

We continue our serialisation of Anne by Constance Fenimore Woolson
Anne
“The old wretch has money, and no near heirs”
Part 49
“I have not one word to say against it,” she remarked at last, breaking the silence; and then she walked out of the house and went homeward. It was a hard battle for her. She was to be left with the four brownskinned children, for whom she had always felt unconquerable aversion, while the one child whom she loved—Anne—was to go far away. It was a revival of the bitter old feeling against Angélique Lafontaine, the artful minx who had entrapped William Douglas to his ruin. In truth, however, there had been very little art about Angelique; nor was Douglas by any means a rich prey. But women always attribute wonderful powers of strategy to a successful rival, even although by the same ratio they reduce the bridegroom to a condition approaching idiocy; for anything is better than the supposition that he was a free agent, and sought his fate from the love of it. The thought of Anne’s going was dreadful to Miss Lois; yet her longheaded New England thrift and calculation saw chances in that future which Anne did not see. “The old wretch has money, and no near heirs,” she said to herself, “why should she not take a fancy to this grandniece? Anne has no such idea, but her friends should, therefore, have it for her.” Still, the tears would rise and dim her spectacles as she thought of the parting. She took off the gold-rimmed glasses and rubbed them vigorously. “One thing is certain,” she added, to herself, as a sort of comfort, “Tita will have to do her mummeries in the garden after this.” Poor old Lois! In these petty annoyances and heavy cures her great grief was to be pressed down into a subdued under-current, no longer to be indulged or made much of even by herself. Anne knew but little of her grandaunt. William Douglas would not speak of what was the bitterest memory of his life. The address in to blog visit www.ieyenews.com
the old notebook, in her mother’s unformed girlish handwriting, was her only guide. She knew that Miss Vanhorn was obstinate and ill tempered; she knew that she had discarded her mother on account of her disobedient marriage, and had remained harsh and unforgiving to the last. And this was all she knew. But she had no choice. Hoping, praying for the best, she wrote her letter, and sent it on its way. Then they all waited. For Père Michaux had been taken into the conference also, and had given hearty approval to Anne’s idea—so hearty, indeed, that both the chaplain and Miss Lois looked upon him with disfavor. What did he mean? He did not say what he meant, but returned to his hermitage cheerfully. Dr. Gaston, not so cheerfully, brought out his hardest chess problems, and tried to pass away the time in mathematical combinations of the deepest kind. Miss Lois, however, had combinations at hand of another sort. No sooner was the letter gone than she advanced a series of conjectures, which did honor even to her New England origin. The first was that Miss Vanhorn had gone abroad: those old New-
Yorkers were “capable of wishing to ride on camels, even”; she added, from habit, “through the eye of a needle.” The next day she decided that paralysis would be the trouble: those old New- Yorkers were “often stricken down in that way, owing to their high living and desperate wine-bibbing.” Anne need give no more thought to her letter; Miss Vanhorn would not be able even to read it. The third day, Miss Vanhorn would read the letter, but would immediately throw it on the floor and stamp on it: those old NewYorkers “had terrible tempers,” and were “known to swear like troopers even on the slightest provocation.” The fourth day, Miss Vanhorn was mad; the fifth day, she was married; the sixth, she was dead: those old New-Yorkers having tendencies toward insanity, matrimony, and death which, Miss Lois averred, were known to all the world, and indisputable. That she herself had never been in New York in her life made no difference in her certainties: women like Miss Lois are always sure they know all about New York. Anne, weary and anxious, and forced to hear all these probabilities, began at last to picture her grandaunt as a sort of human kaleidoscope, falling into new and more fantastic combinations at a moment’s notice. They had allowed two weeks for the letter to reach the island, always supposing that Miss Vanhorn was not on a camel, paralyzed, obstinate, mad, married, or dead. But on the tenth day the letter came. Anne took it with a hand that trembled. Dr. Gaston was present, and Miss Lois, but neither of them comprehended her feelings. She felt that she was now to be confronted by an assent which would strain her heart-strings almost to snapping, yet be ultimately for the best, or by a refusal which would fill her poor heart with joy, although at the same time pressing down upon her shoulders a heavy, almost hopeless, weight of care.

All I want is a good night’s sleep “Don’t try to catch up on your sleep” Georgina Wilcox georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com
How did you sleep last night? I slept well but I used to suffer insomnia very badly. Here’s how I cured my problem and I know there are many of you that might find this article helpful. My idea of a great night’s sleep is when you sleep soundly and wake fully refreshed and full of energy. You usually fall asleep within 10 minutes of your head hitting the pillow (with positive thoughts in your mind). Also, a key factor in determining if you had a great night’s sleep is if you dream ‘positive’ or ‘fun’ dreams. Because if your night full of ‘bad’ or ‘stressful’ dreams then you’re most certainly tossing and turning throughout the night and NOT getting a “restful” sleep. It is very important to get quality sleep each night because your body and mind break down and get worn out from stress during the day. The only time that your body and your mind repair themselves and rejuvenate is when you’re sleeping. Don’t try to catch up on your sleep. People tell me all the time that they know that they don’t get enough sleep during the week - but they “catch up” on the weekends. That does not work!!! Your body and your mind need a regular sleeping pattern to repair and rejuvenate - without it you’re actually deteriorating yourself rather than re-energizing yourself. Everyone should strive to get 8 hours of restful sleep. However, some people who exercise and eat healthy foods daily may only need 6 hours. However, if you experience extraordinary amounts of stress each day (mental or physical), then you’ll need more than 8 hours. This is what I do to get a good to blog visit www.ieyenews.com
night’s sleep. 1. I write a list of what I need to do the next day, and I keep that paper and pen near my bedside in case I think of anything else I need to do. When you write things down you’re giving your brain the signal that it no longer needs to think about those tasks. 2. I don’t watch television or listen to the radio (especially the news) before retiring for the night. 3. I read some inspirational or selfgrowth material for at least 30 minutes prior to bed. I often play soothing soft background music as well. Your goal is to fill your mind with inspirational thoughts before falling asleep so that the last thoughts you have before drifting off are uplifting thoughts. 4. I make sure my bedroom is as dark a room as possible - the body is made to sleep when it’s dark out - the darker the room the more potential for a deep sleep. 5. I make the room as silent as possible turning off all electric devices. 6. I don’t eat for at least 3 hours before going to bed. When there’s undigested food in the stomach, your
body is forced to focus on digesting that food rather than being focused on repairing your body and mind - which is what sleep is all about! 7. I try to go to bed at approximately 10:00 pm and awake at approximately 6:00 am. In Ayurvedic medicine it’s believed that there are cycles that are the most conducive for certain activities. Going to bed at 10pm and arising at 6am appears to allow the body to rest the deepest, rejuvenate the most, and give the person the most energy throughout the day. 8. I don’t take drugs or vitamins/herbs that are supposed to help you sleep (unless required by your physician). Most of these artificial sleeping aids do nothing more than deaden your senses - the goal of ‘sleep’ is to give your body the time and means to repair itself and prepare for the coming day. When you drug yourself to sleep, every system in your body is slowed down, including all those systems that are responsible for repairing you. 9. I make sure that there’s a fresh air supply in the room. The air indoors is said to be some of the most toxic air around. When you sleep, you’re only able to breath in the air that surrounds you in your enclosed bedroom. Try opening a window a crack even if you use air conditioning. Fresh air is better than air conditioned air. 10. During the day, I do 60 minutes of mild exercise. If you don’t have time to do 60 minutes in a row, then break it up into 2 - 30 minute sessions, or 3 - 20 minute session, or 6 - 10 minute sessions --- just get a full 60 minutes in. The best exercise when talking about general health and preparing your body for a great night’s sleep is walking. If it works for me it can work for you.

Not just science fiction: Planet orbits 2 suns MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) — Astronomers say a bit of science fiction is now reality. They’ve spotted a planet orbiting two suns. The discovery was made by NASA’s planet-hunting telescope Kepler. Scientists describe the find in Friday’s issue of the journal Science. They are calling the new planet Tatooine (tah-too-WEEN’) after the fictional body in the “Star Wars” films that boasts a double sunset. The alien world, about the size of Saturn, is frigid and inhospitable.
It orbits two stars 200 light-years from Earth. Though there have been past hints of the existence of other planets that circled double stars, scientists said this is the first confirmation. Kepler was launched in 2009 to find out how common other planets — especially Earth-like planets — are in the universe.
“The Journey is the Reward” What if you could choose who to be despite your circumstances?
The planet, called Kepler-16b, is the most “Tatooine-like” planet yet found in our galaxy and is depicted here with its two stars.
Officials say beaver teeth are 7 million years old ALBANY, Ore. (AP) — The Bureau of Land Management says a fossil found by employees on federal land represents the earliest record of living beavers in North America. The pair of teeth was found on BLM land in northeast Oregon. The Albany Democrat-Herald reports the teeth come from the Rattlesnake Formation and are 7 to 7.3 million years old. The BLM says the earliest beavers were found in Germany 10 to 12 million
years ago and the animals spread across Asia, eventually crossing the Bering Land Bridge to North America. The previous earliest known records of living beavers in North America, from about 5 million years ago, were from Nebraska, California, and northern Oregon. The fossils will be displayed at the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.
Scientists at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine say the fossil of an armored dinosaur hatchling has been found in College Park.
Arctic sea ice shrinks to second lowest level WASHINGTON (AP) — Arctic sea ice melted this summer to the second lowest level since record-keeping began more than 50 years ago, scientists reported Thursday, mostly blaming global warming. “This is not a random event,” said oceanographer James Overland of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “It’s a long-term change in Arctic climate.” The new measurements were taken by the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo. It reported that the amount of ice covering the Arctic hit its lowest point late last week, covering just 1.67 million square miles. Only in 2007 was there less summer sea ice, which has been dramatically declining since scientists began using satellites to monitor melt in 1979. Other records go back to 1953. Each summer, sea ice melts and then refreezes starting in the fall. The summer minimum is a key

War of the Worlds Georgina Wilcox georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com

APPLY SUNSCREEN PROPERLY.
The end of the school year is here and savvy moms and dads by now have made all the arrangements for summer. Summer camps and leisurely days at the pool or beach are just a few of the summer rituals for many families. However if you're tempted to let your child play outdoors for even a few minutes without proper sun protection, you might want to think twice. Adolescence and childhood are critical periods during which exposure to UV radiation is more likely to contribute to skin cancer in later life. Children with fair skin, blond or red hair and blue or green eyes are at the highest risk of sunburn. But darker-skinned children also need sun protection. With this in mind, it’s important that parents teach their children how to enjoy fun in the sun safely.
LIMIT OUTDOOR PLAYTIME BETWEEN 10A.M. AND 4P.M.
Apply a thick, even coat to all exposed areas 20 - 30 minutes before your child goes out in the sun. Choose a sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher. Make sure it's labeled "broad spectrum," which means it blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight. For your little ones, sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide should be selected as these compounds are less irritating than others. Sunscreen sticks are best for the face because they are sweat proof and less likely to drip. Don't forget nose, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck; lips can also burn, so apply a lip balm with SPF protection. Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours, or after sweating or swimming.
COVER FROM HEAD TO TOE. Wearing protective clothing and hats is one of the primary ways of warding off UV damage. When wet, light coloured clothing transmits just as much sunlight as bare skin. Keep your kids covered with dark colours, long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. And don't forget the accessories: sunglasses with UV protection to guard against burned corneas, and hats to prevent sunburned scalps and faces. Protective clothing, hats with wide brims, and sunglasses are just as important for babies. At the beach, bring along a large umbrella.
I have to say I was thrilled with the quality of the recording of the audiobook. It is from the BBC Classic Sci-Fi Radio and has a run time of two hours and fifty minutes. One of the things that I enjoyed the most of listening to ‘War of the Worlds’ on audiobook compared to the movie is how much eerier it was. Watching the movie was good, (although I did prefer the 1953 version with Gene Barry) but audiobook was even more enjoyable. Both movies are real eye candy. However, the audiobook invokes your imagination. The sound effects being much simpler, but it felt more real. It made me feel like I was there. Then I re-read the book. That was better still. My imagination really soared. I couldn’t put it down. How many times have you gone to the movies to see a film based on a book you have read and loved, only to be disappointed with the movie? Lots of times with me. This is because your imagination is your own. It is unique and watching and listening to someone else’s is never as good.
Parents, you are the best teacher by practicing sun safety yourself. If your child sees you following sun safety rules, he'll take them for granted and follow suit. Teach every member of the family how to protect their skin and eyes. With proper supervision, children can learn to protect themselves and enjoy summer fun without sacrificing the health of their skin.
Avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun's rays are at their strongest. Even on cloudy or cooler days, ultraviolet (UV) rays remain strong. Shady spots can be just as tricky because of reflected light. If your child is playing outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply ample sunscreen.
WATCH OUT FOR MEDICATIONS. Some medications increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, so make sure to ask your doctor whether your child may be at risk. Prescription antibiotics and acne medications are the most notorious culprits, but when in doubt, ask.

Fernando Torres – worst miss ever?
Emmanuel Adebayor celebrates after scoring against Liverpool
Paul Kennedy paul.kennedy@ieyenews.com
Fernando Torres wished the Old Trafford pitch would have opened up and swallowed him whole. With eight minutes left on the clock, plus injuries time, the under fire striker had a chance to bring Chelsea within one goal of Manchester United. He rounded goalkeeper David De Gea and with an open net at his mercy and just a few yards out, somehow Torres managed to put his effort wide. A delicate chip early from the Spaniard will have been forgotten after this, probably the worst miss in Premiership history. The game finished 3-1 to United who extend their lead at the top of the Premier League, after neighbours City dropped points at Fulham who came to blog visit www.ieyenews.com
Torres can’t believe he missed an open goal
from two goals down to draw 2-2. But it was a bad day at the office for Liverpool who went down 4-0 against a rampant Tottenham. Goals from Luka Modric, Emmanuel Adebayor (2) and Jermain Defoe saw off the Reds who had Charlie Adams and Martin Skrtel dismissed. “We started the game short of the level we have been at recently. “They started better than us and Modric scores a great goal to put them one in front. Then Daniel Agger gets injured in the process of trying to make the tackle, but it’s a great finish. “That was the start of our downfall. We started poorly and they began better than us, despite the other incidents which are best left unanswered. We can look at ourselves and the start we had in the game
because that dictated what was going to happen to us. “I think Tottenham started really well and played really well. It’s best that we stick to what we can dictate the future of and that is playing football. We cannot legislate for results. “We also want to be respectful to Tottenham who played particularly well.” Sunderland beat Stoke by the same scoreline completing Sunday’s fixtures. On Saturday two own goals from Arsenal saw them lose away at bottom of the league Blackburn Rovers 4-3, Norwich beat Bolton 2-1 and Everton beat Wigan 3-1. Swansea and QPR both put three past West Brom and Wolverhampton without reply.

16-year-old Lexi Thompson gets historic LPGA win PRATTVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Juli Inkster thinks Lexi Thompson has proven she’s ready for LPGA Tour membership. Because she’s not 18 yet, Thompson has two more stages of qualifying school to go through to become a member. “She has kind of proven she can play out here,” said Inkster, who at 51 was the oldest player competing. “She’s proven she can handle the social part of it. I think they should give her full (membership). “It’s kind of silly, isn’t it? I think it makes us (the LPGA) look bad, too. Now, you have to go to qualifying school? To me, that’s silly.” LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan didn’t seem inclined to let her skip the rest of qualifying school. “Should Lexi qualify for LPGA membership via her Q-School performance, she will be an LPGA member for the 2012 season,” Whan said in a statement. The Floridian closed with a 2-under 70 Sunday to beat Tiffany Joh by five strokes to finish at 17-under 271. Thompson shattered the age record for winning a multipleround tournament held by Paula Creamer, who won in 2005 at 18. Marlene Hagge was 18 years and 14 days old when she won the single-round Sarasota Open in 1952.

Romo rallies Cowboys playing with fractured rib SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Tony Romo felt sick to his stomach. It hurt to breathe, let alone bark out the cadence in a hostile road stadium. Playing with the throbbing pain from a fractured rib, Romo rallied America’s Team just as he promised he would. In a week when Romo vowed to play his best game, he delivered a gutsy comeback that looked so unlikely when he briefly came out from halftime and then returned to the locker room.

Tony Romo
Silence hurts. If you
SEE something,
“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
Moments after the Cowboys (1-1) announced the quarterback was done for the day, there came No. 9 ready to take charge of the huddle once again. Romo hit Jesse Holley on a 77-yard completion on the Cowboys’ first play of overtime that set up Dan Bailey’s winning 19-yard field goal 2:53 into the overtime, and Dallas pulled off an improbable 27-24 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. In one frantic span, Romo emphatically left his mark on the storied Cowboys49ers rivalry that dates back decades to all those epic matchups in the NFC title game that regularly set up Super Bowl victories by the winner. “It’s got to be one of those things that will follow him through his career. I know what it was here in the locker room at halftime. I know what he had to do to get back on the field,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said.

England, coming off a victory over Argentina, scored six tries and beat Georgia 41-10 to stay in first place in Pool B. France later held off Canada 46-19 for its second bonuspoint win. The result pits the French against top-ranked New Zealand, which also has 10 points from two victories in Pool A. Defending champion South Africa dazzled in a 49-3 win over Fiji, while Australia’s vaunted backs were smothered in a 15-6 defeat to an impassioned Ireland team in the Rugby World Cup’s first major upset. In Saturday’s first match, Argentina rebounded from an opening loss to England by beating Romania 43-8. The Irish did not win any of their four warmup matches last month. But they outsmarted and outsmucled the Wallabies in the rain, shaking up the playoff possibilities. If Ireland holds on to win Pool C, it likely will avoid meeting New Zealand, Australia or South Africa in the early playoffs.

Calabash clobber Hammerheads
Kevin Creary kevin.creary@ieyenews.com
The Calabash Soldiers spared no ammunition while thrashing the Hammerhead Pirates at the Ed Bush Field. From the start of the game the “Soldiers” established their presence with deft passes and tactical plays, which would later prove to be their winning formula. The elusive techniques of star player, Glen Duran, were devastating to the Pirates’ defense. The Calabash Soldiers opened the scoring in the first half after Peter Whittaker received a well placed pass from his teammate, quarterback Glen Duran, and powered his way to a forty-yard touchdown. The dominance of the Soldiers
continued in the second half when Glen Duran, mesmerised the Pirates offence and ran all the way in to score his touchdown. Tensions flared as the Pirates looked to each other for a solution to Calabash Soldiers’ dominance. But it was to no avail as, at the end of an impressive performance, the Calabash Soldiers came away welldeserved winners. The 13-0 victory leaves the shipwrecked pirates no prize or loot from which to salvage their pride. Winning coach of the Calabash Soldiers, Johann Moxam, said, “We are happy with the performance. We knew that if we did our jobs individually we would win. “The key to the victory was the performance of the offensive line. The Pirates are a good physical team but
they could not contain our passing and running game. “We knew that they would be depending on the ‘danger’ brothers, Nigel and Baron Solomon, so we shut them down. We dominated every facet of the game.” Losing coach, Selkirk Watler, gracefully accepted defeat, “In the first half we moved the ball around very well, but there were some faulty cues. “For the most part, we played well. I thought it would be a close game. We have some key guys and some new players in key positions, but we just need to jell some more.” There will be a major showdown this Saturday at the Ed Bush Field in West Bay, when the Calabash Soldiers take on league leaders, West Bay Hell Cats.
