The parents of Nathan Clarke released a farewell statement yesterday through the RCIPS, thanking volunteers and police for their search efforts, and lamenting the lack of any trace of the vanished water-sports instructor. In a seven-paragraph press release, parents Elizabeth and Randell Clarke, who left George Town on Saturday, said they had been left “none the wiser” about the fate of their 31-year-old son, resident for four years in Cayman, who went missing on the evening of 25 February at Public Beach. “It is now three weeks since our son (and brother to Sam and Dan), Nathan, went missing and we leave the island none the wiser as to what has happened to him,” the two said, appearing to concede his death after almost a month of fruitless searching. Mr and Mrs Clarke and their other two children arrived in George Town on 3 March.

Ten wagging tails belonging to ten excited dogs, all ready to start a new life – thanks to the Humane Society, Cayman Airways, and Pets Alive, a shelter in New York State. The dogs were being put into crates ready for a flight to JFK airport, where hopefully they will all find loving homes. Justine Riseley, one of the volunteers flying to New York with the dogs, explained: “We have been working with a shelter which is a no-kill shelter up in New York in a place called Middleton. They have more capacity and better ability to adopt out the dogs. “The main problem here is that people are just not spaying and neutering their pets, and as a result, the shelter has more dogs coming in than they have room for. “Until we get to the point when where we spay and neuter more
animals then we will always have more animals than we have the ability to deal with. Since it’s a small island, there is nowhere else for them to go, often we have to close our doors to new admissions because we’re just overcrowded, which is very bad for the welfare of the cats and the dogs.” The flight is another step of an ongoing relationship the Cayman Humane Society has set up with the New York based shelter: “Pets Alive took a transfer of seven adult dogs in December, and all of those animals were adopted within ten weeks so now they have capacity again.” Ms Riseley said. The dogs are all more than six months old and they are therefore classed as ‘adults’ rather than puppies. “Adults are the hardest animals to get out of the shelter because a lot of people only want puppies. There are great benefits

of taking an adult dog rather than a puppy – and we do try to educate people on that - puppies are a handful - they chew your furniture and they wee on your floor – but the adults are much more mellow and trained and a lot more placid in your house as a rule.” Ms Riseley said. “We wanted to thank Cayman Airways for their assistance they fly the dogs to the States for free.” Ms Riseley said. In addition, the public could help with the airfares of the dog’s ‘chaperones’ –that is the Humane Society volunteers who are needed to fly to New York with the dogs. “If donors would like to help they can go onto the Cayman Airways website and donate air miles to the Cayman Humane Society.” Ms Riseley said.

John Garabo died March 16 in California. According to a Facebook post from his daughter, Ashley, he had been very sick with diabetes and died peacefully in his sleep. Garabo’s career of more than a quarter century included stints at KZLA Los Angeles; WDSY Pittsburgh; WWYZ Hartford, Conn.; KFRG Riverside, Calif.; and a nine-year stint in mornings at KSKS Fresno, Calif. Most recently, he had been PD and afternoon driver at country ZFKY (Rooster 101.9) in the Cayman Islands. He returned to the U.S. in December 2010 to be closer to his children, and in one of his last Tweets on Jan. 4 of this year wrote, “Happy New Year! Looking forward to my new life in 2012! I’m very excited!” In addition to Ashley, Garabo is survived by his son, Nolan. Both children are teenagers.

section 28B. Why, when and by which previous Government was the draft one man one vote constitutional requirement changed? The local Constitutional Commissioners 2002 report recommended one man one vote as the people’s wish and recently the Electoral Boundary Commission report also recommended it. The new 2009 constitution was promoted heavily by the PPM Government (not the UDP) when the PPM members were the majority in the Legislative Assembly (LA) at that time. The PPM could have saved or put back in the one man one vote section similar to the 2003 draft constitutions if they wished. Further the PPM Government could have changed the Elections Law to introduce one man one vote before the 2009 elections or immediately after. They did not. Now that the PPM Opposition elected members are a minority in the LA and cannot change the law, the PPM Leader says that the PPM is for one man one vote and will introduce it (presumably for the 2016 elections) if the electorate votes the PPM into the LA with a majority in the next elections. Why did not the PPM do this when they had the power to do so! The public is tired of political tactics. The UDP Opposition was not a promoter of the new constitution and was not in a position to change anything in it without the PPM Government’s agreement or vote in the LA. Generally, political parties do not like EQUALITY of voting because it may weaken the political party stronghold and allow more independents into the LA. Prior to 2001 the voting
system was less important on this matter as there were no political parties and no political party Governments and so it was not a real issue of pressing concern. The PPM got the support of the Cayman Ministers Association and the 27 supporting church congregations for the new constitution without having an equality of electoral voting provision in it, mainly by certain amendments to the Bill of Rights. For the first time many churches openly took a major political position and without whose support the constitution may not have been approved in the referendum. Historically, most churches have kept out of politics. In our next letter we will show further inequality in political party Governments. The Peopleinitiated referendum needs a majority of all registered voters to pass but the political party governments referendum needed only a majority of the voters who actually vote for it to pass. The PPM promoted the Bill of Rights in which one of the main principles is EQUALITY. One of the most fundamental rights is the right to vote which is NOT EQUAL in the new constitution. How could the PPM and others support a Bill of Rights and constitution which does not have equality of voting? We believe that the voters should send a message to the politicians by supporting the people- initiated referendum petition for one man one vote. The people should also initiate another referendum to put in place the constitutional checks and balances that the public needs to protect them and their money.

Last seen “walking toward the water’s edge” about 8:30pm, according to Ms Beck, the sports instructor and part-time Cayman Prep teacher made a final call from his cell phone between 8:07 and 8:09, and did not respond to repeated calls after he was last sighted. More than 500 volunteers and police spent more than 30,000 hours searching the beach, inland and sea areas in the subsequent weeks. The love and respect you all have for him gives us hope that answers will soon be found,” Mr and Mrs Clarke said. “Thank you once again for your love and support.”

Gunman kills four outside Jewish school in France TOULOUSE, France (AP) — A motorcycle gunman opened fire Monday in front of a Jewish school in the French city of Toulouse, killing a rabbi, his two small sons and one other child, the prosecutor’s office said. It was at least the third motorcycle killing in France in a week, shocking the country and prompting strong emotions and high-level discussions in Israel. French prosecutors were studying possible terrorist links, but the motive for Monday’s attack was unclear. Concerns about a serial killer emerged, as investigators examined whether Monday’s shooting was linked to two deadly shooting attacks in the Toulouse region last week that killed three French paratroopers and left another seriously injured. French media reported those paratroopers were of Arab origin. President Nicolas Sarkozy rushed to the school, ordering increased security at Jewish and Muslim buildings around Toulouse, while his prime minister ordered officials to “secure” all school and religious buildings in France. A 30-year-old man and his 3-year-old and 6-year-old sons were killed in Monday’s attack, just before classes started at the Ozar Hatorah school, a junior high and high school in a quiet residential neighborhood, Toulouse Prosecutor Michel Valet said. Witnesses said the man worked at the school. Valet said another child, between 8 and 10 years old, was also killed, and a 17-year-old was seriously injured. “He shot at everything he had in front of him, children and adults,” he said. “The children were chased inside the school.” Sarkozy denounced “the savagery” of Monday’s attack on a school, and vowed to find the killer or killers. “We will find him,” he said. Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet told The Associated Press that the suspect

in Monday’s school shootings made his getaway on a dark-coloured scooter — just as the assailant or assailants did in the two shootings last week. The school, targeted Monday, behind a high white wall with few external markings, was cordoned off by police who then escorted other children out, as forensics police combed the scene. One officer held a distraught girl, her face in her hands. A mother and son wearing a yarmulke walked away from the site, their faces visibly pained. A video camera was visible at the school’s entrance. “The drama occurred a bit before 8 a.m. A man arrived in front of the school on a motorcycle or scooter,” Valet said, adding that the man got off his scooter outside the school and opened fire. The prosecutor said the suspect probably used two weapons, including one of a large calibre. On March 10, a gunman on a motorbike shot and killed a paratrooper in Toulouse. Last Thursday, a gunman on a motorbike opened fire on three uniformed paratroopers at a bank machine in Montauban, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Toulouse, killing two and critically wounding the other. The Paris prosecutor’s office said it will investigate eventual terrorist
links to Monday’s killing and the two killings of paratroopers last week. The prosecutor’s office, in a statement, did not indicate any evidence so far of terrorism. France has the largest Jewish community in Western Europe, estimated at about 500,000. France also has the largest Muslim population in Western Europe, about 5 million. A man who lives near the school said he spoke with the father just before he was shot and killed. “I said “Bonjour” to him like normal,” said the 29-year-old, asking to be identified only by his first name Baroukh. “Then he went out into the school entrance. I heard the shots
and I turned around and saw him on the ground. He looked dead. But I didn’t have much time to see who did it because I panicked and started running away.” Both the prosecutor and Brandet said there were similarities with the attack four days ago in Montauban and in Toulouse eight days ago. “It is too early to establish a sure link” between Monday’s shooting and those of the paratroopers last week, the prosecutor said. “But there are elements that justify asking very serious questions.” Forensic analysis showed the same weapon was used in the shootings in Montauban and Toulouse.

Ground broken for new remand facility

Construction has started on the long-awaited $8 million Cayman Islands Youth Centre, with a gala ground-breaking ceremony attended by top officials, anticipating a May 2013 opening in time for next year’s elections. Addressing the Thursday ceremony, Minster for Community Affairs Mike Adam, charged with bringing the project to fruition, told the gathering that the new centre -initially scheduled to hold 22 males under age 18 on the 30-acre site -- would seek to “restore“ young offenders through a combination of education, therapy and training, underscored by constant vigilance. “The youth centre home will be for offending youth, who have been victims of poor parenting, poor education, drug abuse, psychiatric disorders and emotional abuse, and will prevent a slide into antisocial and delinquent behaviour,” he said, pointing to successes with the programme’s Missouri Youth Services Institiute model An alternate to punitive systems of juvenile justice, the11stage “Missouri Model” seeks to de-emphasise traditional “correctional” prison functions, moving “toward a rehabilitative and therapeutic model where youth are treated in a humane and nurturing environment that results in the youth making positive and long-lasting changes,” according to institute literature. Adopted in New York, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, nearby Santa Cara County and in the states of Louisiana and New Mexico, the programme, developed and localised with programme founder Mark Steward, points to dramatically reduced rates of youth crime, violence and re-offending. “Thirty years ago,” Mr Adam said, “Missouri closed its punitive facilities and now boasts some impressive statistics. Three years after discharge, in 98 percent of cases there has been no recidivism,” he
said, underlining consistently high rates of re-offending in the Cayman Islands prison system. Recent studies at Northward have lamented a lack of effective rehabilitation and education services. Divided into “cottages” of between 10 people and 12 people, the regime of vocational and academic training, group therapy and other activities, closely monitored by residential counselors will “explore and confront family behavioural issues, so young people can understand and correct their behaviour, and can see that they are responsible for it. “It will require sustained support to prevent the revolving door of youth crime,” Mr Adam said. Since September, West Bay’s Bonaventure Home has been testing a pilot Missouri programme, credited by Mr Adam with already enabling some residents to return to mainstream schooling. In future, the remodeled home will accommodate both males and females, some transferred from

A newly created “Youth Empowerment Services” will manage the new youth centre, intended, Mr Adam said, “to recapture the hearts and minds of our youth and give young people a second chance.” Speakers thanked departed former Cayman Islands Chief Magistrate Margaret RamsayHale, founder of both the drug and domestic-violence courts and the new Family Court, to be managed by her successor and newest High Court Justice Richard Williams. Ms Ramsay-Hale left Cayman in October to tale up a 1 November appointment to the Turks and Caicos Islands High Court. “The judiciary for many years has been calling for a place for youths to be restored to a place in society,” Justice Williams said. “The Missouri model is for the rehabilitation and restoration of our young people, actively engaging them to make
lasting changes. “Behaviour is often symptomatic of unmet needs. We must restore them, but also prevent them from offending in the first place,” he said. “One of the building blocks of family law is the building block of preemptive intervention and hope in the Family Court.” Minister Mark Scotland, speaking on behalf of Premier McKeeva Bush, in tax-legislation talks in the US capital, warned, however, that the centre’s programmes were not to be treated lightly. “We are showing our commitment to at-risk youth of our islands. We are not giving up on them, but anyone who mistakes this for a soft touch, well, the Missiouri model works and it reduces recidivism. It is a safe and orderly environment, but it is still a place of remand that is able to contain offenders. Prison is not an ideal answer and that is why we are doing this, extending our hand to those that might have fallen, helping them to dust off and join our community.”

Coke’s sentencing in US the talk of Jamaica KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — When drug baron Christopher “Dudus” Coke ruled her slum neighborhood, Gloria Petgrave and her neighbours felt so protected by the area’s criminal benefactor that they never locked their doors. Now, with Coke in New York facing sentencing Friday, Petgrave says she is frightened to step outside at night in the West Kingston district of Tivoli Gardens. Police have patrolled the streets since authorities besieged and raided Tivoli Gardens to capture Coke nearly two years ago, and many residents say they yearn for the more effective order he enforced, as lawless and violent as it was. “I’ve never seen it as bad as it is now, lots of robberies,” the 67-yearold woman said just outside the bullet-pocked ghetto where’s she’s lived for four decades. “We want Dudus to come back here, but I doubt he ever will.” Coke faces up to 23 years in prison after pleading guilty in August to federal racketeering and assault charges. He could have faced a life sentence on the initial charges filed against him. Still, he remains in the spotlight in Jamaica. Many islanders speculate that he has told prosecutors of politicians, businessmen and others linked to crime, possibly opening a new chapter in the fight against corruption. “I don’t see the U.S. government being so generous to him without a cost. They are obviously trying to get as much as possible out of him about who are the people at the top,” said Hilton McDavid, a social sciences lecturer at Jamaica’s University of the West Indies who has researched the aftermath of the May 2010 security raids in Tivoli Gardens. Although U.S. authorities portrayed Coke as among the world’s most dangerous drug barons, McDavid says more powerful figures still lurk in the shadows. “Dudus is basically a sergeant major. We haven’t touched the officers as yet: the generals, and the colonels and the majors. And they are probably people who are

living very comfortably, people in high circles at the upper echelons of society,” he said. National Security Minister Peter Bunting said last month that officials are trying to crack down on more kingpins and facilitators for organised criminal networks, not the sort of underlings arrested in recent years. Coke followed in the footsteps of his father, Lester Lloyd Coke, better known as Jim Brown, a leader of the notorious Shower Posse during the 1980’s cocaine wars. Authorities say he took over the organisation when his father died in a mysterious fire in a Jamaican prison cell in 1992. In Tivoli Gardens, people said Coke often paid the bills of those in need and made sure the streets were clean. Since everyone knew the penalty for street crimes was severe, thugs committed their assaults elsewhere. But anyone who disobeyed Coke could suffer harsh punishment. One person accused of thievery “was brought to the ‘jail’, tied down and killed by Coke with a chain saw,” according to court papers. Carolyn Gomes, executive director of the Jamaicans For Justice rights group, said there have been few changes in Jamaica since Coke’s capture and extradition. She said murders and other crimes dropped last year, but gang violence has been ticking back up in recent months, even after peaceful general elections
in December. The sense of impunity for crime dons “was broken with the extradition of Dudus,” Gomes said. “(But) we have not seen any work at all done in communities to sever linkages with politicians and dons.” For nine months in 2009 and 2010, former Prime Minister Bruce Golding denied the U.S. extradition request for Coke because his justice minister said that U.S. investigators had used wiretaps in violation of Jamaican law. When his government finally backed down in May, Jamaican security forces launched a hunt for Coke in Tivoli Gardens in a confrontation that left more than 70 people dead. He was captured by Jamaican authorities in June 2010 and extradited to the U.S., but investigations into the deaths have barely begun. Jamaica’s two major political parties have long relied on underworld bosses to help produce votes among slum dwellers. At a recent press conference, Police Commissioner Owen Ellington said Coke’s Shower Posse is significantly weakened but remains active in West Kingston. In the rough area of Denham Town, a maze of narrow roads just across the street from Tivoli Gardens, a spray-painted scrawl in Jamaican patois still vows lifelong allegiance to the crime boss: “Coke fi Life, Dudus.”

Eminem drops in on 50 Cent’s ‘Get Rich’ SXSW show AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The rumours were true: Eminem joined 50 Cent to recreate “Get Rich or Die Tryin’” Friday night at South By Southwest. It was a throwback to the heyday of gangster rap at the music conference and festival as 50 Cent hit the stage at the Shady Records showcase in a camouflage bulletproof vest and a Yankees cap as clouds of chronic floated through the air. With a seven-piece band and MC Tony Yayo at his side, he laid down the 16 game-changing
tracks from “Get Rich,” performing the entire album live for the first time. “It’s been a minute,” he told the crowd of about 2,000 at the Austin Music Hall and an audience watching via Fuse and YouTube. “It’s been 10 years. That album sold 13 million copies. Damn.” The album came out in February 2003, with Eminem and Dr. Dre serving as executive producers and featured rappers. While Dr. Dre didn’t show in Austin, Eminem — the focus of
rumours all week — joined 50 on “Patiently Waiting” and a short encore that almost didn’t come off because of lackluster crowd reaction, a commonplace occurrence at SXSW. “I guess it’s not what have I done, but what have I done for you lately, is that right?” a tweaked 50 Cent said when he returned to the stage. But perhaps showing he’s mellowed in the decade since he filled the air with the “pop pop pop” of songs like “In Da Club” and “Many Men (Wish Death),” he did the encore anyway.
Despite concerns, North Korea defends rocket launch BEIJING (AP) — Despite China’s concerns, a senior North Korean nuclear negotiator reiterated his government’s position on a planned long-range rocket launch after holding talks Monday with his counterpart in Beijing. Ri Yong Ho said the launch of the satellite is separate from recent talks with the United States and North Korea over food aid. The United States promised the aid in exchange for a suspension of North Korea’s nuclear programmes and has warned that the launch could jeopardise that agreement.
“The launching of the satellite is part of our right to develop space programmes,” Ri said outside a government guesthouse in Beijing. He warned that the North would respond to any threats on its sovereignty. “Regarding the peaceful purpose of the satellite launching, if others are practicing double standards or inappropriately interfere with our sovereign rights, we will be forced to react to it. But we will try our best for these things not to happen,” he said. The U.S., Japan, Britain and
others have urged North Korea to cancel the planned launch, calling it a threat to diplomatic efforts and warning that it would violate a U.N. ban on nuclear and missile activity because the same rocket technology can be used for long-range missiles. London games organisers unveil Olympic torch route LONDON (AP) — Schoolchildren, charity fundraisers, war veterans and a centenarian are among 8,000 people who will carry the Olympic flame in the torch relay for the 2012 London Games, organisers announced Monday. London Games officials unveiled a street-by-street map of the 8,000-mile (12,875-kilometer) route, which begins at Land’s End — the westernmost tip of England — on May 19. Some 8,000 torchbearers will carry the flame across Britain, with a stop in Dublin, Ireland. The International Olympic Committee ruled relays should be
confined to host countries after human rights protests disrupted the international route before the 2008 Beijing Games. Most of the torchbearers are members of the public chosen for embodying community spirit, courage and sporting determination. The volunteers, who each will cover about 300 yards (metres) include Britain’s oldest full-time firefighter and a soldier who lost three of his limbs in an explosion in Afghanistan. The youngest is 11, and the oldest is Londoner Dinah Gould, who turns 100 on May 23.

What has happened to ‘Prince’ Solomon?

The defining legend of King Solomon was his great wisdom. He was wise and his gift of wisdom came from God because he asked for it. This was back in the years 971 – 931 BCE and it was in Israel. His father was David. Move now to the present time and to the Cayman Islands. We have our own Solomon – first name Ellio. His father is the well respected gentleman Timothy Solomon. Ellio has not risen to King status but he behaves like he is a prince so I will give him that status. I first met Ellio at The Harquail Theatre many years ago in the musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat”. He played Joseph and I played his father, Jacob. Instead of me giving Joseph fatherly advice Joseph told me my singing performance at the dress rehearsal was “awful”. He was right. I strove hard to do better. Ellio joined Government as technical support and procurement manager, after degree level studies in electronic engineering, business administration, financial management and labour economics. He chaired the infrastructure committee that
drafted legislation to improve telecom pricing and services through competition. In 2001, he launched CayPolitics.com, “an online news and political website to educate the public and provide a forum to discuss important issues.” He came to prominence soon after that when he joined the Rooster 101 radio talk show “Cayman Crosstalk” as a co-host, first with Barrie Quappe and then with the current host, Austin Harris. When Austin took over it soon became clear that Ellio was using the show as a platform to launch his political ambitions as he continually made derogative comments about the ruling PPM Government under the leadership of Kurt Tibbetts. It was, therefore, no surprise when he announced he was running in the 2005 Elections as a member of the UDP. He campaigned for open government and letting the people have a voice. He was elected as George Town’s fourth MLA. Since then we have had Ellio bursting uninvited into the Rooster studios and confronting MLA and now leader of the opposition, Alden McLaughlin over Alden’s remark that he had been told one of the owners of Tom Jones International
was Mr. Solomon’s brother-in-law. Despite Alden apologising more than once on air to Ellio saying he was misinformed, Ellio would not accept it. After the show, Rooster assured McLaughlin that Solomon’s outburst was “uncalled for, out of order and totally unnecessary”. There have been minor incidents since then including last October when Ellio claimed Alden assaulted him. “I am not going to get into too many details, but I will say as a matter of public record that yesterday in the afternoon I was assaulted by the Honourable Alden McLaughlin and I intend to do what I believe any normal citizen would do under the circumstance and that is to seek to file those complaints and have charges brought against him,” he said. Premier McKeeva Bush has defended Ellio on a number of occasions and it would seem he is very much in favour and for a backbencher he has been given a number of powerful duties including now leading the port negotiations with China Harbour. He has made a number of carefully worded speeches concerning the matter giving assurances that local labour will be employed and Cayman’s George Town shop
owners will be protected. He sounded and looked very much ‘up to the job’. I was somewhat amazed when last week I learnt Ellio had forsaken his stance on free speech, quizzing the police commissioner, David Baines, about the legality of picketers at the governmenthosted UDP Bodden Town meeting last Thursday. He implied that the “large number of people shouting” and waving placards at the political meeting was wrong and they should have had police permission to shout. He actually asked if the RCIPS had “a policy to allow these kinds of demonstrations at public meetings”, even when there were significant numbers. “It is a worrying development,” Solomon said about the picketers, who, he said, were deliberately trying to drown out the speakers. Commissioner Baines said that provided there was no breach of the peace, people had a lawful right to express their opposition to something. “We are only concerned with public order and that does not interfere with the right of people to express themselves,” Baines said. So what has happened to the prince? Is his version of Solomon’s wisdom, “Free speech and demonstrations is only acceptable when I agree with it”?

Mexican cartel says no violence during papal visit MEXICO CITY (AP) — Banners purportedly signed by one of Mexico’s drug cartels and hung in Guanajuato promise there will be no violence during next weekend’s visit to the state by Pope Benedict XVI, an official said Sunday. At least 11 banners signed by The Knights Templar gang were found in five municipalities, including the city of Leon, where the pope begins his trip Friday, an official at the state Attorney General’s Office said. The official agreed to discuss the events on condition of anonymity, because he was not authorised to disclose the information. He said the banners were found Saturday hanging from pedestrian bridges and carried messages
about “a sort of truce for peace and said they are going to keep the peace during the pope’s visit.” The official did not reveal the exact wording of the messages, but the newspaper Reforma’s Sunday edition said one banner read: “The Knights Templar disavow any military action, we are not murderers, welcome to the Pope.” The Knights Templar gives itself a pseudo-religious persona, proclaiming in banners that it is the defender of the region’s people. It was created in neighbouring Michoacan state after a split with the since-weakened La Familia cartel. In February, The Knights Templar put out banners warning rival gangs to stay away and not

In another development, Mexico’s army said soldiers in the western state of Jalisco captured a suspected local leader of Jalisco New Generation, a drug gang allegedly allied with the powerful Sinaloa cartel. A military statement said Jose Guadalupe Padilla Serna, alias “The Vulture,” was a New Generation commander in six municipalities in Jalisco and was caught with another alleged gang member. Padilla was a direct subordinate of the recently captured Erick Valencia Salazar, purported head of New Generation, the army said.

Model Selita Ebanks debuts her new swimsuit line
Selita Ebanks rose to fame rocking beachwear for Victoria’s Secret and Sports Illustrated. Now she has designed her own swimwear line. The model gives a peek at Sass by Selita Wednesday night on BET’s “Rip the Runway” fashion show, which she also co-hosts. Sass stands for Selita’s accessories, shoes and swimwear. The swimsuits will be available first and she’s shooting for a fall launch. “I wanted a name that covers all of my aspirations in the designing world,” Ebanks says. “Sass is basically the female version of swag. “I wanted something that will empower women and let them know that their sass is untouchable,” she adds. “It takes a certain kind of women to have sass — very confident, sexy and independent.” The models sporting the skimpy suits on the show, pre-taped at the Hammerstein Ballroom, surely had to be comfortable in their skin. Some pieces are just thin links of chains that require something worn underneath. Even the most modest suits show plenty of skin. “That’s definitely not for the timid,” she says of one chain link
number. “But the great thing is that if you have a one-piece swimsuit that’s pretty boring, this is something you could just throw on top of it and reinvent it. It’s fun and sexy.” Ebanks certainly knows sexy. She was a Victoria’s Secret Angel from 2005 to 2008 and appeared in Sport Illustrated’s 2007 Swimsuit Issue. Born in Grand Cayman, she moved to Staten Island when she was 15. Ebanks enrolled at Curtis High School, studying in their law programme and interning at Spin and Vibe magazines. She had been told she should model her whole life and looked into it at different times, but it wasn’t until she was 17 and was scouted at Six Flags Great Adventure that her career took off. The scout took a picture of her and handed off a business card. She took it home to discuss it with her father. “My dad is a corrections officer here in New York City, so he’s very strict,” Ebanks says. “It was school first, so he really didn’t give me much energy on it.” They called the agency a couple

of weeks later to schedule an appointment, and she got a contract on the spot. “Rip the Runway” fuses fashion and music. “If you see artists like Rihanna, Kanye West or Puff Daddy, it’s all about what they wear,” Ebanks explains. “When you watch, you’ll see that [the performances] added a completely different element to the show. Like any fashion show, there’s always music in the background, except this time it’s live, similar to Victoria’s Secret shows.” Estelle, Robin Thicke and Diggy Simmons are among this year’s performers, with Lil’ Kim closing the show. “It was the best closing ever,” Ebanks says. “She is unstoppable. Her new song is so dope, ‘If You Love Me.’ It was really cool to see her out there doing her thing again.” Ebanks has co-hosted the show two years in a row. “If you watched last year, you’re probably going to think I’m a completely different girl,” she says. “Apart from now I have blond hair, my energy and confidence
[went up]. “Last year I was so worried,” she adds. “You could tell I was reading from a teleprompter. This year it was more natural. [Co-host] Pooch Hall was so easy to crack a joke with, or do a little dance.” Ebanks chose some fresh faces to show off her swimsuits. “I love giving young aspiring models an opportunity,” she says. “I wanted different body shapes really small mini minis and then I wanted big voluptuous, like just bottoms pouring out everywhere. So hopefully when people watch it, they can see themselves in it.” Ebanks envisions different price points on her swim line, with a set of American-flag themed suits selling for $40 to $100 at department stores, and the chain pieces going for more at higher-end spots. Don’t expect to see Ebanks wearing any of her suits in the ocean. “I’m afraid of fish and I’m from the Cayman Islands,” she says. “I don’t do ocean. If there’s an aquarium and you wanted to scare the heebie-jeebies out of me, just dunk my head in there with the fish.”

Bishop Reid said his country was plunging deeper and deeper into an abyss of fear and despair as it struggled to define the line separating the constituted authority and the criminal underworld. One can only ask the question are the Cayman Islands going the same way? But it’s not just here in the Caribbean. Take a look at what’s happening in the West, especially the UK and the USA. There is one single line from the USA’s Declaration of Independence that describes these basic principles, and it is the meaning of these words that provided the foundation for the formation of the United States: “We hold these truths to be self evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” - Thomas Jefferson Every one of us is created equal and that life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness should be a basic right. America’s founding fathers acquired these principles from their religious beliefs, and regardless of what people may think, the United States was founded on Biblical principles. Their founding fathers did not use certain aspects of the Bible just to satisfy what they wanted in a country. They used the Bible as a whole in order to create an understanding of what the basic rights are for an individual. They concluded that these rights are from God and are given to all individuals. One of the unalienable rights given by our creator is the right to

live our lives. Our creator placed each individual on this earth for a reason. Is it not true that other people in the world have that same unalienable right to live and fulfill God’s purpose? So, if this is a founding principle not only for the USA but also for all of us, does it not follow that we should all help others less fortunate then ourselves? Should not others, who were born in underdeveloped countries, have the same right to life? We seem to have lost sight of the fact that excess without giving is not really what USA’s founding fathers had in mind and most certainly not God’s. What is morality? Wikipedia describes morality as the differentiation of intentions, decisions, and actions between those that are good (or right) and those that are bad (or wrong). My first example of immorality may be considered by many as one that does not have anything to do with morality, but if you give it more then cursory thought, you would most likely consider it a morality issue. This first example has to do with us here in Cayman and our relationship with our automobiles. Yes, immorality can be seen at such a insignificant level. More importantly, this example shows the pervasiveness of immorality within our society. Most of us who live here need an automobile for basic functioning within most areas of these small islands. The automobile has become a perfunctory status symbol. Many people here can barely pay their rent or mortgage, but they will shovel out money per month on an automobile they really cannot afford. They spend money per month in the form of a car payment or lease, just to have a ‘nice’ car. In the USA it is an obsession – especially with the sport utility vehicle (SUV) until the soaring gas prices has made in uneconomical. The basic argument of the SUV owner was that by driving a SUV, they felt safer. If their driving skill was so poor they couldn’t avoid
poor drivers, they should have tried working on their driving skills. SUV’s consume large quantities of fuel and concomitantly contributed to the increase in fuel demand. This increase in fuel demand helped drive fuel prices upward. And how many SUVs do you see driving around here. Even our Editor-inChief has one as does our Publisher (I am on dangerous ground here so I had better stop this line of attack). With all of us so reliant upon our automobiles, higher fuel prices mean less extra money in our pockets. Money that could be used to help feed those dying from starvation throughout the world. The American car companies for many years pushed the SUV on the American public, Latin America and the Caribbean. These car companies, as we all know, suffered the consequences. The thinking as to why these companies offered these vehicles to the American public and us was that they thought we would continue in their mindset that excess is better. The American car companies today have learnt their lesson but at what a cost. A bail out by the American taxpayer. They have had to continually lay off workers in order to maintain a level of viability. They have been very slow to innovate and the federal government has had to mandate fuel efficiency. Because of their sluggish response to the need for fuel-efficient vehicles, American car companies suffered the consequences. On the other hand, Toyota and Honda, companies that have put fuel-efficient hybrids out into the market place, are now doing very well. Toyota was the number one car
seller in the world, until the recall of faulty vehicles that started in 2009 and is still happening even as I write this article (March 2012). Toyota and Honda have always placed fuel efficiency as a higher priority. Now Americans and people here have created a new mind set that excess is not good, and frugality is the way of the future. Simply put, driving SUV’s is not intelligent. Granted, there are situations where an individual needs a SUV such as Alaska or any area of the country where road conditions are poor or winters are severe. I know our editor had no choice in buying his because he lost his car in Hurricane Ivan (although that wasn’t a fuel-efficient car either) as did our publisher and they were the only cars available for purchase. And there are occasions where material needs to be transported in a SUV because of its increased carrying capacity. In these cases, there is a legitimate reason to own a SUV because of its utilitarian value. But the majority of SUV owners are not in these situations or extreme conditions frequently enough to warrant owning such a fuel wasting vehicle. Driving a hybrid is an example of intelligent frugality. They are now available here and with the increasing gas prices I am sure more will be bought. However, here we have a very high electricity bill to pay and that climbs at the same rate of gas because gas is what fuels the electricity generators. Rejection notices hurt determine how successful you will be. Here are ten rejection rituals to overcome the sting of “NO”.

Rejection hurts. Many artists think about rejection so much that they are afraid to even create. This is a crime and a theft of art before it is even born. How do we deal with the suffering that comes with hearing no, no, no, time and again? Over the years I have had my share of rejection (I am a playwright) and gone through this painful part of my journey. Use this anti-rejection checklist to ensure that rejections are few and far between, and when they strike, that you have a plan to move on.
1. Write an encouraging letter to yourself. Remind yourself why you do art and why it is worth some suffering. 2. Write another letter that expresses your emotions to the rejecter (then throw it away). Make this fun and really go for it, because you are not going to send it. 3. Revisit a former success such as a contest won or a prior showing. Gloat over your previous victories and know that they are just the beginning of your success.
1. Separate the creating and the promoting process. I suggest creating first, and thinking about selling later, when your art is complete. Do whatever you can to produce the best art you are capable of. 2. When submitting your work, set aside the “quirky artist” you and assume the professional stance. Submit your impeccable slides or queries absolutely free of errors, typos and smudges. Show up in a professional way and expect to be treated professionally. 3. Do your research. Seek a true match for your art. Be clear about the submission process for each gallery or contest that you submit to. Make sure to follow the guidelines. Again, this is not the place to express your abundant creativity, unless it’s in the vein of how you can get in front of your target audience. 4. Set up a system to track your submissions. Know where you have submitted your work so that when you get a rejection, you are ready to resubmit to another likely candidate. Make it easy to keep submitting if you don’t want to be so overwhelmed emotionally that you can’t keep going.
4. Spend some time free writing on your experience with rejection. Start with the prompt, when I was rejected....I
5. Speaking of emotions, it’s inevitable that you will be awash in a whirlpool of emotions. The work of making and selling art is a deep and powerful expression of the human existence. No wonder we get emotional! Anger, resentment, frustration, and sadness may all threaten to overtake your resolve to make and show art. This is normal, yet you don’t want to dwell in the storm. Experience the emotions and then move on. Give yourself a suitable period of time for you even if an hour, an afternoon, a full day, and then keep going. 6. Be very clear about what is being rejected about this particular query or this particular piece of writing. You are not being rejected. Your entire creative life and artwork are not being rejected. We can get depressed beyond repair if we globalise the rejection and take it to mean that we are no good or our art is no good.

7. Know that rejection is as much a part of creating as is the thrill of inspiration. Rejection is built into the game. Get used to it and be willing to take it in stride. If you are getting rejections, take it as an excellent sign. It means that you are moving your art from the privacy of your home and into the world. It means that you are trying, and that you are taking your work to the next level. It means you are taking yourself seriously enough to risk a no. You should feel good about this and acknowledge your efforts to bring your work to a wider audience. Okay, so you have done everything on the anti-rejection checklist (and more!) to ensure the best possible result. And you’ve been rejected nonetheless. Now follow the post-rejection checklist to deal with it and keep moving. You can only do so much to avoid rejection. How you deal with it will
5. Throw a tantrum. Grab a big pillow and pummel it with all the force of your disappointment and anger. Rant and rave about the unfairness of it all. 6. Exercise. Go for a walk or a run or a bike ride, or whatever you do to get into your body. Offer up your sweat to the rejection. 7. Some people save their rejection letters. You may want to add it to a file or... 8. Burn the rejection letter, and with it, all the disappointment. 9. Call a supportive friend and tell them about the rejection. You may ask them to recount your strengths as an artist and a person. Make sure this friend is able to offer unconditional reassurance as part of your rejection ritual. 10. Do any of the above rituals and then get back to whatever you were creating. You must keep going!

Donald wins and goes back to No. 1 PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) — Coming off a historic season, Luke Donald was starting to feel forgotten. All the talk at the start of the year was whether Tiger Woods was trending toward a return to the top of golf. That gave way to Rory McIlroy, the 22-year-old U.S. Open champion who two weeks ago reached No. 1 in the world and figured to stay there for a long time. “I don’t pay too much attention to it, but I certainly wasn’t in the media at all,” Donald said. “I think people ... thought that my last year was maybe a little bit more of a — not a fluke, but I don’t think many people thought I could do that all over again this year. “Hopefully, I can prove them wrong.” Sunday at the Transitions Championship was a step in that direction. Donald was just another name on the leaderboard — so crowded that eight players had at least a share of the lead at some point during the final round — until he ran off four birdies in a seven-hole stretch in the middle of the round and closed with seven pars. That gave Donald a 5-under 66 and put him in a four-man playoff at Innisbrook that didn’t last long. From a heavy lie in the right rough, he put a flawless swing on a 7-iron and watched it clear the bunker in front of the elevated green and settle 6 feet away. Then, after watching Jim Furyk (40 feet), Bae Sang-Moon (18 feet) and Robert Garrigus (7 feet) all miss their birdie putts, Donald thrust his right fist into the air after his birdie putt curled into the cup. Just like that, he’s back to No. 1 in the world. McIlroy’s stay atop the world ranking only lasted two weeks, and there’s no shame in that. Four other players stayed at No. 1 for only one week the first time they got there — Fred Couples, Tom Lehman, Ernie Els and Tiger Woods. All but Lehman eventually returned. If anything, Donald showed he’s not going to give up the ranking without a fight.
A year ago, he became the first player to win money titles on the PGA Tour and European Tour. He started this season finishing so far back that he didn’t get any ranking points. Then, he went to the Match Play Championship and became only the third No. 1 seed to get eliminated in the first round. “I hit it poorly, wasn’t hitting the shots that I wanted to, wasn’t even feeling very comfortable on the greens,” Donald said. “It just seemed very strange to me, because I had been working hard and I felt good about where I was.” He likes where he is now. Donald won for the fifth time in his last 31 tournaments worldwide, and this one was enough to return him to No. 1. Because neither he nor McIlroy is playing until the Masters, Donald will drive down Magnolia at the top of the world ranking. That means more pressure, and more questions about winning that elusive major. Donald — just as Lee Westwood before him — didn’t get enough credit as No. 1 without a major, which some perceive as a requirement because of the standard Woods has set. It took Donald winning two money titles to get his due. Will he get the attention now? Probably. “I still think Rory and, obviously, Tiger will be getting a lot of the attention,” Donald said. “There probably is an advantage to me. I can kind of go about my business and not have to deal with as much as those two are dealing with.” McIlroy wasted no time sending his congratulations through Twitter. “Well I enjoyed it while it lasted! Congrats (at) LukeDonald! Impressive performance!” he tweeted. He followed with another tweet that at least he won’t have to change his profile picture, taken late last year with McIlroy flashing a No. 2 sign alongside his girlfriend, tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. “I’m sure he got a taste of the view and I’m sure he’ll want more of it. going on.” The only fluke was how Donald returned to No. 1 — by winning a playoff, just like he did at Wentworth last May when he first rose to the top of the world ranking. With so many possibilities in this wild final round, only the best golf was going to get rewarded. Garrigus birdied the last two holes for a 64 and was the first to finish on 13-under 271, which turned out to be enough for the playoff. Bae, the South Korean with the fluid swing, made a 6-foot par putt on the final hole for a 68. Furyk had a 69 and was the last one to join the four-man playoff. Missing from the group was Ernie Els, whose bogey-bogey finish cost him a chance to win — and maybe a trip to the Masters. Els was leading at 14-under par when he missed a 4-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole, missed the green badly on the par-3 17th for a bogey, then pulled a 4-foot par putt on the 18th hole for a 67 to finish one shot out of the playoff. The Big Easy could have secured a Masters invitation by winning. Because he tied for fifth, he only moved to No. 62 in the world. Bay Hill does not have as strong of a field, meaning Els might have to win next week or the Houston Open to get back to Augusta National. “It’s going to be tough,” he said. “I’m pretty hot now, and it’s difficult to talk with a straight head here. If I
take stock, I think I’m playing good golf, and I’ve got to head into the next couple of weeks trying to get a win.” Donald felt the jangled nerves of trying to win, only it was different from Wentworth. This was more about the trophy, not the ranking. He started the final round three shots out of the lead, then swiftly moved into position with four birdies in a seven-hole stretch around the turn, showing off his polished iron play on a couple of those birdies. In the final hour, there was a sixway tie for the lead until two players dropped out — Els with his bogey on the 18th, and Ken Duke with a bogey on the 17th when he rimmed out a 5-foot putt. Donald had a heavy lie in the right rough, up the hill to a pin tucked over the bunker. He went with a 7-iron from 157 yards — it was playing closer to 170 yards with the elevation change — and the shot narrowly cleared the bunker and settled 6 feet below the cup. It was a remarkable shot, especially in a four-man playoff. That’s what No. 1 players do. “That shot just came out perfectly,” Donald said. “You never quite know out of the rough. Sometimes it comes out soft and sometimes it comes out a little hot. That one, just when it was in the air, looked good to me.”

Muamba improving, heart beating without medication LONDON (AP) — Bolton says midfielder Fabrice Muamba is showing “small signs of improvement” and his heart is beating without the help of medication two days after going into cardiac arrest during a match. In a joint statement with the hospital treating Muamba, the club said Monday he was also moving his arms and his legs. But the statement cautions that “his long-term prognosis will remain unclear for some time. He is still critically ill.” The 23-year-old Muamba’s heart started beating on its own again only when he arrived at a London hospital’s heart attack unit Saturday night. “Fabrice Muamba’s heart condition is stable, but he remains critically ill in intensive care,” the London Chest Hospital and Bolton said Monday in a joint statement. The player’s fiancee has been issuing pleas on Twitter for the health of Muamba, who proposed on Valentine’s Day. The couple has a 3 year-old son, Joshua. “Fabrice WILL!! Pull through because God is good,” Shauna Muamba tweeted. “Love u so much fmuamba keep strong we’re praying for u honey... where there is life there is hope.” Bolton manager Owen Coyle said the former England under-21 player is putting up a “brave fight,” adding that the club had been inundated with messages of support, including from David Beckham. “There is a real hope he can come through this. Alex Smith concludes visit with Dolphins MIAMI (AP) — Even in the offseason, the Miami Dolphins’ quarterback carousel keeps spinning. After being spurned by Peyton Manning, the Dolphins had a brief, unproductive courtship with Matt Flynn, then turned their attention Sunday to Alex Smith, the San Francisco 49ers free agent. Smith left the Miami complex after a 5 1/2-hour meeting. Dolphins officials declined to comment on any details about this visit. However, the visit could affect the Manning sweepstakes, because the 49ers are among three finalists for the four-time NFL MVP, along with the Denver Broncos and Tennessee Titans. The 49ers had been working to re-sign Smith but also went to North Carolina last Tuesday to watch Manning work out at Duke. Smith, the No. 1 overall 2005 draft pick, enjoyed his best season in 2011 under first-year 49ers coach Harbaugh, a former NFL quarterback. Smith and Manning have the same agent, Tom Condon. A new starting quarterback would be the Dolphins’ 17th since Dan Marino retired following the 1999 season. Winless in postseason since 2000, they made signing Manning their top offseason priority, but he told them Thursday he would sign elsewhere. They then courted Flynn, the former Green Bay Packers backup who had ties to new Dolphins coach Joe Philbin. Flynn visited Miami on Saturday, then agreed to terms Sunday on a multiyear deal with the Seattle Seahawks. The Dolphins planned another QB interview Monday, when they were to host veteran David Garrard, a person familiar with the negotiations said. The person confirmed the visit to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team had not publicly discussed its plans. Garrard, a starter for Jacksonville from 2005 to 2010, didn’t play last season. He was released five days before the opener by the Jaguars, then underwent back surgery in October. After all of their shopping, it’s
possible the Dolphins will stick with incumbent Matt Moore. “Looks like Miami (is) going with Moore again,” former Dolphins coach Jimmy Johnson tweeted after Flynn’s deal with Seattle was announced. While Moore played well last year, there are doubts he’s a franchise quarterback. Smith struggled early in his career but threw for 3,150 yards and 17 touchdowns with only five interceptions last season as San Francisco went 13-3 and made the NFC title game after an eight-year playoff drought. He orchestrated six comeback wins, four on the road. Smith has been weighing a three-year offer from the 49ers. If he instead joins the Dolphins, he would be reunited with running back Reggie Bush. With the high visibility that international star athletes bring to any sports event, sports tourism offers a big boost to the Islands’ tourism product, Mr. Bush said. This event will take signature status in Cayman’s sports tourism roster as well as give local athletes the opportunity to see world-class pros in action, he said. Based on an idea developed by Cayman’s international gold medallist Cydonie Mothersill, the event is organised by the Ministry of Finance, Tourism and Development with a host of other sponsors, notably Dart without whose contribution the event might not have become a reality, he said. Thanking all the sponsors, he added the ministry’s “$75,000 invested is money well spent.” To be held for one-day at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex on 9 May, the event will feature over 80 professional track athletes, including US 100/200m sprinter Carmalita Jeter (world number one in 2011); Dylan Armstrong (current

world number one in shotput); Novlene Williams (Jamaican semifinalist at the Beijing Olympics in women’s 400m); Michael Frater (4x100 meter world record holding Jamaican team member) and Bahamian Olympic medallist Chris Brown (current world number four in men’s 400m). Joining them will be 2010 Commonwealth Gold medalist Mothersill; middle distance and CAC medalist Jon Rankin; sprinters Kemar Hyman and Tyrell Cuffy; hurdler Ronald Forbes; and long jumpers Karl and Carlos Morgan, Mr. Bush said. The aim is to make Cayman Invitational an annual event and form a trio of regional pro track and field meets with the Jamaican Invitational, which takes place in early May, followed by a meet in Puerto Rico, Ms Mothersill said. would have to be paid to take part, she explained. Noting that sports is on the move in the Islands, Minister of Health, Environment, Youth, Sports and Culture, the Hon. Mark Scotland, JP, said Cayman could look forward to Cydonie competing at home with other world class athletes.
Cayman Invitational Features Cayman’s first ever world professional athletics meet will comprise 11 track and two field events, according to a release from Fresh Image Public Relations and Marketing. Races featured will be the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1,500m running events and the 100m, 110m and 400m hurdles. Sponsors are Cayman Islands Government, Dart, Cayman Airways, DMS Broadcasting, LIME, Cayman National Bank, Water Authority and Cayman Free Press.
