In just seven days, four people have been killed and another left fighting for his life.

On Monday, Jason Christian became the latest victim of the senseless gun crime that’s paralysing the Cayman Islands.

For once, his murder didn’t take place on the streets of West Bay but instead in George Town outside a

Another man, Keith Montique, was shot but miraculously survived the attack and has been flown to Miami for emergency treatment.

After he was shot four times, Mr Montique staggered to Crewe Road where he saw a police car.

Detectives then found Mr Christian slumped at the wheel of a white van – the same vehicle, say police, that was used in the robbery of Tortuga Liquor Store last week.

Last Tuesday, Robert Bush was killed in West Bay. On Thursday, Andrew Baptist died after he was shot and, on Saturday, night Preston Rivers was murdered.

Chief Superintendent John Jones said: “It’s clear these have all been assassinations. The brutality speaks for itself.”

So far six people have been arrested but no one has been charged.

Football freestyler Shanice Monteith really turns heads when she gets a ball at her feet.

For the teenager dazzles crowds with her amazing ball-skills that would put many professionals to shame.

The art of freestyling may be more akin to the streets of Brazil where the skills of the beautiful game have been honed.

But 18-year-old Shanice, a UCCI student, can clearly play to the Samba beat.

And it’s thanks to youtube that her skills have been developed.

Shanice, who was born in George Town but lives Savannah, said: “When I was 10 years old I used to play by myself with a football.

“I used to always watch football demonstrations on YouTube.

“When I watch the YouTube videos and I see football tricks that I like I practice very hard at them.

“There are quite a lot of styles and tricks in football.

“I have been playing competitively now for about 12 years.

“I do not only know how to juggle with the football, I play football a lot more often than I juggle.

The potential star player says she is preparing her body for future endeavours with physical training.

Oregon man looking for Neb. casino gets detox stay LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — An Oregon man pressed his luck one too many times and spent the night in a Nebraska detox cell after twice mistaking a police station for a casino and asking authorities for blackjack chips.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports the 21-year-old man approached the University of Nebraska-Lincoln police station front desk after a college football game Saturday night. He left after a staffer told him it was a police station but returned a few minutes later.

That’s when an officer administered a blood alcohol test, which registered at .273 percent — more than triple the state’s legal driving limit.

Police took him into protective custody while he sobered up. A police sergeant said the man had not committed a crime and was not arrested.

Bear of a burglary nets stuffed Pa. bruin

UNIONTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Police are searching for some thieves who pulled off a bear of a burglary at a western Pennsylvania bar.

Uniontown police say five patrons pushed an 8-foot mounted bear over a secondfloor railing at the Eagle’s Nest bar early Sunday morning.

The men fled in a pickup truck and the bear, which weighs as much as 800 pounds, was moved near a side door of the establishment.

But the next morning, it was gone.

The bar’s owner says the bear had been professionally mounted in Alaska and was worth about $10,000.

Police say the bear and the outside steps had been damaged when the mounted animal was thrown over the railing.

Three brave women are out on a mission to help mastectomy patients deal with the fear of removing their breasts due to cancer.

Naomi Fazio, Amica Scott and Myrna Gregson (pictured above) are all wearing their breast prosthesis, a silicone imitation of a woman’s breast inside their bras.

The group unanimously agreed to tell their stories, with the hope that sharing their experiences can provide support for other cancer survivors.

The women feel that cancer survivors need to make public their support for each other.

“The survivors of cancer need to be reassured that they are not alone.” said Mrs. Amica Scott.

The three also say they are anxious to share their experiences of prosthesis, which are specially designed artificial breasts, with those who need them.

Gregson said, “If a woman has never worn a prosthesis before, I explain to them as best I can how it may feel.

“Although the breast prosthesis is guaranteed for two years they sometimes last beyond that period.

“Specially designed bras are built to accommodate artificial breasts.

“The special bras do not have underwire and are very comfortable to wear.”

The women told iNews that they are proud of themselves for making the choice to attempt to terminate the spread of their cancer by having a mastectomy.

All three women reside in the Cayman Islands and are members of the Cayman Islands Cancer Society.

The trio was sharing a booth at the Cayman Islands Cancer Society’s Health Fair entitled “Conquering Cancer 11”, held at the Marriott Hotel.

A mastectomy is sometimes done to prevent the spreading of cancer from one breast to the next, or from the breasts to other parts of the body.

“Some women have had to remove both their breasts when the cancer spreads, and are then fitted with a pair of prostheses,” said Myrna Gregson.

Myrna’s duty is to ensure that each silicone breast is fitted with accuracy and comfort.

Ms. Gregson takes accurate measurements of the female’s upper body, recording specific characteristics of the remaining breast to ensure a match.

Ms. Gregson also does measurements and fittings for patients that have removed both breasts.

Special bras designed to fully support the artificial breasts are worn by each of her clients. The special bras can cost between C.I. $18 to $20. The cost of the prostheses can range between C.I. $100 to $120.

Myrna. Gregson is also a member and representative of American Breast Care, who are creators of these special prostheses for women who had a mastectomy.

Tributes have been pouring in for one of the slain victims of the gun war that has seen four people killed in a week.

A specialist Facebook page in memory of Preston Rivers has been created to allow friends to leave messages following his death.

And the page has been used to appeal for calm after the rise in gun crime.

Preston, 18, died in West Bay on Saturday night. He was sat in a car outside a condominium complex on Andresen Road when he was killed.

Yesterday the page “RIP Preston “Ezeke” Rivers” had more than 150 followers on the site.

The tribute was created by a cousin of Mr Rivers who appealed for the escalating gun crime to stop.

On the information section the creator wrote: “ [sic] my lil’ cuzzie was gunned down over stupidity & I’m beggin, encouraging everyone to be blessed, stop the drama, appreciate life, gun play ain right & now me & my family have to deal with this misfortune.”

One friend wrote on the wall of the page: “My condolences go out to all of your family, my family also. I won’t forget our great times after Ivan when you would come over to Uncle Raymond’s all the time.”

Another added: “This is the 2nd morning i wake up with tears in my eyes...i feel like crap...after crying for hours...i miss you so much pressy.”

Ten bullets fired in ambush

At least 10 bullets were fired in Tuesday night’s George Town ambush of Jason Christian and Keith Montique. Christian, 18 was shot in the head and Montique, 22, survived four wounds and was airlifted to Miami yesterday.

Alerted by Mr Montique just after 9:30pm on a routine stop in Crewe Road, police found Mr Christian in nearby Cranbrook Drive, slumped at the wheel of a white Toyota Liteace van.

“Police officers found the van with the engine running, stuck slightly into the bushes. At the wheel was a young man who obviously had received gunshot wounds to the head. He was barely alive and expired after a very short period of time,” said RCIPS Chief Superintendent John Jones.

“Officers found a loaded revolver in the white van very near to the victim. It would appear that, at the time, the gun hadn’t been fired,” he said.

Police had found “a minimum of 10 spent shells” at the scene, he said, “but don’t know exactly the number of guns” that were used. He declined to speculate on the weapons.

According to the Chief Superintendent, Mr Montique, described by medical personnel as “unbelievably lucky”, had “staggered” across Crewe Road, “and, with obvious injuries, opened the door of a police vehicle parked in Birchwood Drive, saying he’d been shot.

“The officer took him to George Town Hospital to be treated. He

told her he’d been with a friend in Cranbrook Drive and that his friend had been shot,” Mr Jones said.

The two, he said, had “gone into Cranbrook Drive to meet somebody at an address. The person wasn’t there. It would appear that a gunman approached from the bush and fired some shots at Mr Montique and his friend, who attempted to drive away.”

A hospital spokesman said Mr Montique was in “serious, but stable condition.”

“The van,” Mr Jones said, “was the same used in last Friday’s Tortuga Rum theft in Pasadora Place, but it was not used by the suspects in the robbery”. Detective Superintendent Marlon Bodden declined to say who held the van’s registration.

Neither Mr Jones nor Mr Bodden would say if the victims had been lured to the small suburban street:

“We are still investigating, but we are not excluding that by any stretch,” Mr Jones said.

While unwilling to be explicit about Mr Christian’s and Mr Montique’s links to three gun and gang-related murders in West Bay since last Tuesday, both officers said the men had West Bay addresses and connections and “were known to us”.

“I won’t say ‘no, it isn’t’ [connected], but I will be equally careful about saying ‘yes, these people are connected to the shootings, but, given the timing, we think there is a strong possibility they are connected,” Mr Jones said.

Referring to the recent deaths, he said “It is clear all of these have been assassinations. The brutality speaks for itself. The perpetrators have been determined to kill and in all cases people were shot in the head.”

“All have been ambushed-style,” Mr Bodden said.

Police have arrested six people in relation to gang affiliation, Mr Jones said, and would monitor Facebook pages supported by members of the warring Birch Tree Hill and Logwoods factions, some displaying gang members brandishing guns and threatening retaliation.

“We are trying to get legislation changed about firearms to shift the burden of proof onto the persons who have to prove these are not real,” Mr Bodden said. “They are individuals causing havoc in the Cayman Islands.”

He was shot multiple times and died in an instant. People in the area knew this wouldn’t be an isolated incident.

Since he was murdered Bush, 28, has been described on the Logwoodz Dons [sic] Facebook page as “a general”.

Locals predicted more bloodshed and they were not wrong.

Two days later rival gangster Andrew Baptist a member of the Birch Tree Hill gang was murdered outside a house on Sand Hole Road.

A swift and quick conclusion to the senseless acts of violence wasn’t forthcoming and more people were to die in the days that followed.

Although police have made six arrests, no one has been charged.

Detective Superintendent Marlon Bodden said: “We are seeing individuals holding back with evidence until people

Attempted break-in of ATM Criminals have made a determined attempt to remove an ATM machine with a sledge hammer from Butterfield Bank, Fort Street.

The management of Butterfield Bank contacted the police to report that they discovered the bank’s ATM had been tampered with overnight.

Police reviewed the CCTV and saw how the culprits had tried to remove the machine by using a sledge hammer to pry it from the wall but were unsuccessful.

The ATM was not breached, preventing any cash from being stolen.

The incident is under investigation by detectives from the George Town CID. The RCIPS is asking for any information that can lead to the apprehension of the persons that were responsible for this incident.

Concern for missing teenager Police are looking to the public for assistance in finding missing 16 year old Shandi Sandoval.

Shandi ran away from the Frances Bodden Girls Home on 6 September 2011.

Shandi is approximately 5ft tall with light brown complexion and black shoulder length curly hair.

Police have been looking for her since her disappearance from the girls home, however, they need the help of the community in finding this young girl.

Shandi is known to frequent the West Bay area.

Death toll at 81 for quake in India, Nepal, China cut off and authorities fear the death toll could rise once rescuers reach them.

Indian army helicopters ferried rescuers and dropped food and supplies to still-inaccessible villages in Sikkim, a sparsely populated and almost entirely mountainous region that was an independent protectorate before becoming an Indian state in 1975.

Residents of the state, which borders Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and the Chinese region of Tibet, have been spooked by at least five aftershocks since Sunday, with the strongest a

Obama’s health care cuts spread the pain WASHINGTON (AP) — Health care savings in President Barack Obama’s deficit-reduction plan would squeeze future Medicare recipients, cut payments to drug companies and hospitals, and shift costs to states.

Still, some advocates say the president’s approach is less painful than other major ideas being debated this year, from privatising Medicare to letting the states run Medicaid without a federal guarantee that the poor would get needed care.

“This is a question of ‘compared to what?’” said John Rother, president of the National Coalition on Health Care, a research and advocacy group.

“I would describe this as an attempt to

spread the pain pretty broadly. While it does hit Medicare beneficiaries, it’s better than most of the alternatives we’ve seen thus far, which would involve bigger hits.”

Obama did promise Medicare beneficiaries that he’d veto any legislation asking them to sacrifice without also raising taxes on upperincome earners. But he didn’t issue them a complete pass.

Instead, his administration is borrowing from corporate America’s playbook by proposing to raise a range of costs for future retirees, while mostly shielding Medicare’s 48 million current beneficiaries.

“You can’t reduce the deficit without

making some people pay more or get less,” said Paul Van de Water, a senior analyst with the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Spanish schools hit by strike over staffing cuts MADRID (AP) — Thousands of public school teachers went on strike Tuesday in Madrid to protest staff cuts as anger over government austerity measures spread to Spain’s education system.

The work stoppage in some 300 schools for youths ranging in age from 12 to 18 is to last at least two days and perhaps three. Teachers elsewhere in the country also plan strikes or protests this month against budget cuts. Elementary schools were not affected.

When is enough – ENOUGH? Colin Wilson

How many more murders have to be committed before YOU come forward and save your loved one from becoming another victim of this Island’s days of HELL? Don’t you care? Is there nothing but ICE in your cold, cold heart? How do you sleep at night knowing you could have done something? How can you sleep at night knowing you CAN do something? TELL the police. Use the anonymous hot line TIPS. It really IS anonymous.

There has been no evidence to suggest otherwise.

I wrote yesterday (20) about the anguish and grief of the family and friends of the murdered victims. Loved ones fainting. Others openly weeping. Last night, only an hour after hearing about the latest shootings, this time in George Town, I received a call from my priest. One of the victims, the teenager found shot dead at the scene, is known to me. His family attends my church. He attended my church. MY PRIEST could hardly contain himself with the shock and the emotion in his voice betrayed his feelings. He wanted to know if I had any details as to what had happened? The family had called him earlier.

They needed spiritual help. Can you imagine the scene my priest had to witness? How can you come up with the right words to comfort the murdered lad’s family? HIS PARENTS. They are not a crime-ridden family. They don’t harbour criminals. They are a family like you and me.

ME. And it has touched me. I know the victim.

I know the family. Did they know their son was a member of a gang? Did they suspect? I don’t know – only they do. They have to live with their sorrow, forever. I pray they were ignorant of it. The RCIPS have confirmed he was not an innocent in the wrong place at the wrong time.

He was a member of a gang and he was one of the intended victims. You might know the next young life that is murdered on our streets. Because, unless people come forward with information, colin.wilson@ieyenews.com

Anyone who says (and by the blogs there are a lot of you), let the gangs ‘just kill each other,’ may I remind you about history and the wreckage that follows in the wake of gang warfare. Innocent people get caught in the crossfire. Remember the gangs roaming the streets of Chicago, New York, Miami and closer to home, Jamaica? How do you stop revenge? Generation after generation remembers, revenge festers like poison and it spreads like cancer. It permeates into our Society and it will live within us forever. So we have to be a surgeon and cut it out from its roots before it gets worse. If you suspect you might have cancer you go to the doctor. He diagnoses you and you go into hospital to be cured. If you have left it too late you know the result.

Is it too late for us? NO IT ISN’T! But time IS running out. The Gang Members like to show off. The evidence is there to be seen from their Facebook pages. Some even appear smirking with a gun. “Look at me. With a gun I’m invincible.”

If you are one of their ‘friends’ be a really good friend and come forward. INFORM THE POLICE. No matter how trivial you might think it is. Even just one penny can become a million. Does being a ‘friend’ of the gangs make you feel ‘big’ like they do? Does it excite you? Take a look at the photos of the bloodied, lifeless wreck of your ‘friend’ as he lies in a pool of blood. Invest 98L is becoming better organised, and is forecasted to become Tropical Storm Ophelia within the next 24 to 36 hours (if it has not been upgraded by the time of print). The system is currently tracking to the west, and track models show that the Windward and Leeward Islands can expect tropical storm conditions by Friday (23).

Chinese delegation signs grants with Jamaica KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — A Chinese vice premier and a 60-member delegation arrived in Jamaica’s capital Monday to sign two grants to boost the island’s development as the Asian economic giant steps up its investments across the Caribbean.

Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said Beijing is committed to assisting Jamaica, a heavily indebted middleincome country that gets most of its foreign exchange from tourism, remittances from Jamaicans working abroad and exports of bauxite.

“China is determined to give you the necessary help in the future,” Hui said through a translator during a brief ceremony at the Jamaican prime minister’s office.

He made the comments after Chinese and Jamaican officials signed two grants worth $3.1 million. The money will go to projects mutually agreed upon after consultation by both governments.

Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding said China has recently signed off on nearly $8 million in grants, including a pact made last week at a two-day trade forum in Trinidad.

The Chinese delegation touring the region underlined the growing economic links between the Asian industrial powerhouse and the tourism-dependent Caribbean.

Last week, Hui visited Trinidad for a China-Caribbean economic and trade forum attended by hundreds of Chinese and Caribbean government officials and business executives. At that meeting, China announced it will provide up to $1 billion in soft loans to Caribbean countries to help bolster its economic relationship with the region.

Another Chinese vice premier, Wang Qishan, announced he wanted to see the implementation of more projects that focus on finance, infrastructure and tourism. China’s ministry of commerce announced that Beijing intends to collaborate

on solar energy projects and the construction of schools.

Guyana’s government said China has pledged to give that country $4.7 million. A Chinese delegation that visited the Bahamas before the forum in Trinidad pledged up to $5 million in funding for the island chain off Florida’s eastern coast.

In Jamaica, Li Ruogu, chairman of the state-owned China Exim Bank, which handles most of China’s overseas aid loans, said he was committed to developing strong economic ties between China and Jamaica.

“That is our very determined and firm commitment. So ladies and gentlemen and friends, please trust us. We will be your development partner,” he said.

China is making similar pledges elsewhere in the Western Hemisphere. It is lending and investing tens of billions of dollars in Latin American countries in return for a guaranteed flow of commodities, particularly oil.

Information is key to an effective democracy

Information Commissioner, Jennifer Dilbert and her staff have organised a number of outreach events aimed at educating the public on how to use the FOI law to get more involved in their community.

During “Right to Know Week 2011” (RTK), the public will be reminded that the Freedom of Information Law (FOI Law) not only provides them with a right and means to access government records, but is essential to ensuring that we live in an effective democracy.

Beginning on Saturday the 24th of September with a visit by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) to the Market at the Grounds, the Information Commissioner and her staff have organised a number of outreach events aimed at educating the public on how they can use the FOI Law to get more involved with their community.

This is the third annual RTK week hosted by the ICO, which was established in January 2009 soon after the Law came into effect.

more about how they can benefit from the FOI provisions. “The ability to access information is fundamental.

People must be able to ascertain that government is accountable for its policies and decisions. The FOI Law is an important tool that the public can use to stay informed about how their country is being managed” states the Commissioner. The theme for RTK 2011, ‘Information is Key’, clearly and simply ties together these ideas.

Coinciding with the promotional week will be the International Right to Know Day on 28th of September. Over 90 countries and territories worldwide have enacted access to information legislation and the movement in recent years has grown exponentially.

A special seminar for Chief Officers in Government, including presentations by the Governor and Premier will take place on Wednesday morning.

Other events include student and

service club presentations, a GIS Spotlight TV segment, and a series of articles in the local media. The ICO will also be hosting several training sessions for government employees towards the end of the week. A special service at Agape Family Worship Centre will be held on Sunday the 25th of September at 10am and all are invited to attend.

As part of the public outreach, staff from the ICO will be available to answer questions and speak with the public about the FOI Law on Monday the 26th between 9am12pm at the George Town Hospital and on Wednesday the 28th between 11am-2pm at the new Government Administration Building.

Directions • Preheat oven to 350°F. • Remove giblets from inside the chicken. To clean, run cold water into body cavity of chicken several times. Also clean the outside of the chicken under running cold water.

Pat chicken dry with paper towels.

Place in a roasting pan.

• If desired, for a bit more spiciness, cut a scotch bonnet pepper in half, and remove the stem and seeds.

Rub chicken all over with the inside of both halves of the pepper. After rubbing the chicken with the pepper,

either dice the pepper and place it inside the chicken cavity (which will make the gravy spicier), or discard it.

• Lift the skin, and stuff several small cubes of butter between the skin and the chicken, then rub the chicken all over with the remaining butter.

• Season the chicken with salt, pepper, Season All and finely chopped seasoning (or scotch bonnet) pepper, if desired. Rub seasonings into chicken.

• In a small bowl, season the onion, bell pepper and celery with a little

I actually started feeling really good in my body only in my 30s, soon after I began exercising, trying new sports and getting to know my body better.

I felt younger, stronger and I discovered an athletic side of me that I didn’t know existed.

Training helped me overcome the most challenging events and changes in my life, and up to now; it still has the same positive effect.

Set an achievable fitness goal and a timeline

Don’t give up! Often the biggest obstacles we encounter in life can be our greatest teachers.

I noticed that sometimes people who overcome serious health issues make tremendous efforts to be fit and even surpass the level they’ve been at before.

They are so determined, that it’s a great satisfaction to train and encourage them. Because they are aware of health consequences, they are much more motivated compared to many others who take their health for granted or use their health issues as an excuse to avoid any type of exercising.

They find great excitement in any achievement that seemed impossible a short while ago. This is an example in how you can turn negative experiences into major motivators and be in control of your life.

Minor physical discomforts can turn into health issues. It’s better to start exercising before getting a warning sign than having to deal with health problems later.

I’ve heard is “I’m too busy to train or cook in order to eat healthy.”

How many times have you felt stuck at your desk, overwhelmed with work and felt that you’re not getting anywhere? And if you were to take a break to clear your mind, you would come back more detached and able to finish what you had piled up in no time?

This is the same, try to manage your time to train before you go to work or fit in a quick lunch workout.

Spend active weekends with your family by walking, jogging, swimming, biking.

Take responsibility and make eating right and exercise a priority.

It’s important not to pick on your partner’s bad habits, rather be a positive influence on your family.

You can improve your health condition irrespective of your age, weight, life style and family history.

You don’t have to be a different person by the next day or give up all the things you like to diet for life or become an athlete.

Start with small achievable goals, do the changes, then slowly other ones will fall into place naturally.

If time is your biggest enemy it’s essential to train efficiently by choosing full body exercises, body weight exercises and once in a while plyometric exercises (if your body can tolerate high impact).

All these are intense, functional and can be performed outdoors or at home with none or very little equipment that you can even improvise.

This type of training prepares the body for the activities performed in “personal life” daily life, emphasising combined movements in all planes and it doesn’t have to always be high impact.

It’s important not only to increase cardio vascular capacity and strength but also balance, coordination and flexibility. Functional training may lead to better muscular balance and joint stability, possibly decreasing the number of injuries sustained in an individual’s performance in a sport.

In the next few issues I will demonstrate easy to follow total body exercises that can be performed outdoors or at home.

The two could not enter into her feelings, because in the depths of their hearts they both resented her willingness to leave them. They never said this to each other; they never said it to themselves; yet they both felt it with the unconscious selfishness of those who are growing old, especially when their world is narrowed down to one or two loving young hearts.

They did not realize that it was as hard for her to go as it was for them to let her go; they did not realize what a supreme effort of courage it required to make this young girl go out alone into the wide world, and face its vastness and its strangeness; they did not realize how she loved them, and how every tree, every rock of the island, also, was dear to her strongly loving, concentrated heart.

After her father’s death Anne had been for a time passive, swept away by grief as a dead leaf on the wind.

But cold necessity came and stood by her bedside silently and stonily, and looked at her until, recalling her promise, she rose, choked back her sorrow, and returned to common life and duty with an aching but resolute heart. In the effort she made to speak at all it was no wonder that she spoke quietly, almost coldly; having, after sleepless nights of sorrow, nerved her to bear the great change in her lot, should it come to her, could she trust herself to say that she was sorry to go? Sorry! — when her whole heart was one pain!

The letter was as follows: “GRANDNIECE ANNE, —I did not know that you were in existence.

I have read your letter, and have now to say the following. Your mother willfully disobeyed me, and died. I, meanwhile, an old woman, remain as strong as ever.

My friends know I enjoy a glass of beer. I also enjoy a glass of wine but I’m not a shorts drinker although I have been known to have the odd vodka and lemon. However, my firm favourite is a nice cold beer.

Then there is apple cider – the alcoholic variety of course. My taste buds are twirling.

“Drink and be merry” is a familiar phrase that people would usually say when you are on vacation. But then, here in the Cayman Islands isn’t life a permanent vacation even though we have to work? There, however, lies the danger, because drinking and being merry is limited when people disregard their need for mobility and transportation, having to look at time to ensure that they go home safe and sound.

Tourists tend to hire a taxi and that’s when they can really enjoy a glass of beer. Not only concentrating on the pubs, hiring a taxi extends its coverage to other tourist haunts where drinking is fine but driving ‘merry’ is not an option and dining out is also on the agenda.

If you don’t have to drive yourself, having a glass of beer with music and some pleasantries along the way are a good mix of better things to come, especially where members of the opposite sex are present, even perhaps leading to a stage where one can be able get to know each other better! Part of this, of course, comes from enjoying the company of each other and this proves to be an advantage on the part of the man.

You see, guys, one of the hardest parts of trying to gain the nod of women is providing them with a good time and impressing them they made the right decision in giving in to your company!

UK surgeons separate twin girls joined at head LONDON (AP) — Sudanese twins born with the tops of their heads joined together have been separated in a rare and risky series of operations at a London children’s hospital.

Facing the World, a charity which helps disfigured children, said it had helped fund the four-stage operation on 11-month-old Rital and Ritag Gaboura.

Twins born joined at the head are known as craniopagus twins and they occur in about one in 2.5 million births.

Separating them can be dangerous, especially if — as in this case — there’s significant blood flow between their brains.

“It’s extremely high-risk,” said Dr. James Goodrich, who coordinated a similar separation of conjoined twins at New York’s Montefiore Children’s Hospital in 2004.

But the alternative can be just as bad. Because conjoined twins almost never pump the blood across their bodies evenly, the strongest sibling strains his or her heart trying to pick up the slack. Facing the World said that Ritag’s overworked heart was already failing by the time her family arrived in Britain.

The charity said that the separation took place in stages at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital. Two operations took place in May. Tissue expanders — essentially balloons intended to help stretch the babies’ skin over their newly exposed heads

“Incidences of surviving twins with this condition is extremely rare,” lead surgeon David Dunaway said in a statement released by the charity.

“The task presented innumerable challenges and we were all very aware of our responsibilities to the family and these two little girls.”

just above the hairline to form what appeared to be a single, solid unit.

The after photograph showed both side-by-side looking alert and healthy, clutching white stuffed animals.

Although rare, operations to separate twins linked by their heads aren’t unheard of. The U.S. National Library of Medicine records that one of the first successful operations to separate craniopagus twins took place in 1956.

In 2003, surgeons in Dallas separated 2-year-old Egyptian twins joined at the head, and a year later Goodrich was one of a team of doctors which separated Filipino twins in four major surgeries that took place over 10 months.

Even successful operations can leave neurological damage, although that didn’t immediately appear to be the case with Rital and Ritag.

“Within days the twins were back on the general ward interacting and playing as before,” the charity said. Its executive coordinator, Sarah DriverJowitt, predicted that the girls’ parents — who haven’t been named — may soon return home “with two healthy, separate girls.”

Goodrich agreed.

Managing asthma is not something your doctor can do for you all by himself. Asthma self help is an important part of treating and managing this condition. The task of minimising the risk of asthma attack on a daily basis is largely up to you.

Here are some suggestions:

1. Follow your doctor’s orders.

2. If you smoke, quit.

3. Keep the house dust-free or as close to dust-free as possible.

Use a cylinder vacuum instead of an upright - preferably one that encloses the vacuum cleaner bag inside a solid canister to minimise pumping dust back into the air.

4. If you can, remove carpets and heavy draperies. If you can’t remove them, vacuum them frequently.

5. Avoid using down feather pillows and comforters, and use a plastic cover on your mattress.

Mattresses and pillows, including stuffed animals and other “soft” decorations, can harbour dust mites.

6. Cover your mouth and nose with a scarf if you go abroad and encounter cold weather.

7. If your asthma is triggered by allergens, monitor the outside air quality daily. Avoid open fields and woodsy areas during peak pollen seasons, and take extra care when air quality is in danger ranges.

8. Beware of mould. Dry laundry immediately, and wash and disinfect bathrooms and showers regularly. Remove houseplants, as mould grows in their soil.

9. Pet dander also triggers asthma symptoms. If you can’t part with your pet, keep it out of the bedroom.

Lionfish cull most successful yet

A massive 705 lionfish were culled this weekend in a competition held on Grand Cayman’s reef.

It’s a record number for a single tournament held here. True to the popular slogan for culling lionfish, “Kill ‘Em and Grill ‘Em”, the freshly caught fish were cooked by Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink and served to the public to taste at the final weigh-in on Sunday.

“We are extremely pleased with the huge effort this weekend not only by all of the participants in the tournament but also by the organisers and sponsors,” said Bradley Johnson, Research Officer for the Department of Environment.

“With lionfish producing over 2 million eggs per year, this is an effort that needs to be maintained and these tournaments are a great way to keep our culling community active and excited.”

The sponsors included the Department of Environment (DOE),

Jason Washington, owner and operator of Ambassador Divers with a whopper of a lionfish.

Ambassador Divers, Diamonds International, Home Gas, Vampt Motors, and Michael’s Genuine Food and Drink.

Prizes were awarded to the following teams - “Green Water” captured the smallest lionfish; Tiger Shark won for the largest lionfish, Aquaholics turned in the most number and the greatest overall weight prize went to The Mafia.

Prizes included a private dive charter from Ambassador Divers, jewellery from Diamonds International, an outdoor propane fryer from Home Gas, signed cookbooks from Michael’s Genuine, special vehicle servicing and detailing from Vampt Motors, and more.

The first 100 divers that checked in for the contest received the special edition commemorative lionfish culling tournament t-shirt from Ambassador Divers.

“Many of the frequented moored

dive sites are now clean, thanks to the diligence and commitment of the local dive companies. However, these lionfish culling tournaments are very important because they require divers to think out of the box,” said Jason Washington, owner and operator of Ambassador Divers.

“To keep the lionfish population in check requires a willingness to dive areas off the beaten path, between sites and in places divers rarely go.”

The lionfish are an exotic species of fish that will destroy the delicate ecosystem of our reefs if left unchecked by certified cullers.

Mike Danton uses prison skills to save teammate STOCKHOLM (AP) — Former NHL player Mike Danton was sent to prison for plotting to take a life. In his return to professional hockey, the skills he learned in jail may well have saved one.

Danton, who served a five-year jail term for conspiracy to commit murder, was playing in his first game with Swedish third-division club Ore on Sunday when his linemate Marcus Bengtsson hit his head on the ice after a hard hit and started convulsing.

Using the first-aid training he received in prison, Danton dropped to the ice as well, waited for Bengtsson’s jaw to unclench and then shoved his hand into his teammate’s mouth to stop him from choking on his own tongue.

Danton was convicted in a failed murder-for-hire plot in 2004, and wrote on his blog that “one of the luxuries” of his jail stint was the chance to become a certified first aid responder.

“I have seen seizures before.

In prison, druggies would come in off the streets and have withdrawals,” he wrote. “So, when the convulsions did not (stop) after a couple of minutes, I knew something was wrong.”

After Danton stopped the choking, other teammates helped him put the 21-year-old Bengtsson on his side before an ambulance arrived and took him to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with a concussion and kept overnight.

The league did not suspend Robinson although it has said hits like the one he put on Maclin could lead to such action. Robinson is a repeat offender, having being fined $25,000 last year for a similar hit on the Eagles’ DeSean Jackson that left both players with concussions.

In a letter sent to Robinson, NFL vice president of football operations Merton Hanks noted that “future offenses will result in an escalation of fines up to and including suspension.”

Commissioner Roger Goodell was advised of the decision, and said “we felt this was the appropriate discipline.”

Asked if this was an example of the hits the NFL is trying to get out of the game, Goodell said, “There’s no such thing as a perfect example. There are individual elements of each hit. We’re trying to identify the techniques that will make our game safer.”

There was no chance of that Monday afternoon, when the smallest crowd in the threeyear history of Yankee Stadium nearly drowned out Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” as Rivera came in for the ninth inning.

They hollered with every pitch — and there weren’t many of them. Rivera retired the Twins’ Trevor Plouffe, Michael Cuddyer and Chris Parmelee to end the Yankees’ 6-4 win over Minnesota and break Trevor Hoffman’s mark.

Rivera even broke a bat for good measure — sawing off Parmelee and sending the rookie back to the dugout for another piece of wood.

Parmelee lasted only one more pitch. Plate umpire John Hirschbeck rung him up, and catcher Russell Martin came out to the mound, gently placed the ball in Rivera’s glove, then gave him a big hug.

Rivera stayed and accepted congratulations — Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira and finally Derek Jeter came over before the bullpen and bench got there. The Twins watched from their dugout.

The 2011/2012 Cayman Premier League got off to a good start for Scholars International Sports Club as they dominated Cayman Athletic Sports Club at the G. Haig Bodden field in Bodden Town.

Speaking to Colin Rowe, Scholars International’s head coach, before the game, he said, “Scholars International has a few new imports this season, in the form of Thomas Elliot, Carson Fagan, Damalay Howelle, Wayne Smith, Dave McLaughlin, Alexis Reve, and Davion Wright, and the team is

Ernie Seymour, team director and head coach of Cayman Athletic Sports Club, stated that his team is currently going through a transition, as some of the players that played with the team last season have moved on to play with other teams. Cayman Athletic has a very young team with a few experienced players and is looking to do well this season and to stay in the Cayman Premier League.

Cayman Athletic got off the mark first, with a brilliant strike from Kyle Santamaria in the seventeenth minute. The celebration was short lived, however. Within a minute after the first goal, last season’s player of the year, Carson Fagan, popped up in the Cayman Athletic’s eighteen yard box to hit home his first goal of the match.
