Clueless thieves held up Kentucky Fried Chicken… but snatched the wrong till! The armed robbers struck at the drive-through window of the fast food joint just after 10:30pm on Thursday. Two men wielding a handgun and a machete threatened a member of staff as he served a customer in his car. But they weren’t exactly criminal masterminds as they stole the backup cash register – that was EMPTY! Staff at the West Bay Road branch of the fast food giants, KFC, told iNews that a male cashier, who was assigned to the drive-through window, was busy meeting a customer’s order when he was surprised by a masked gunman. The employee, who asked not to be named, said: “There was a customer in the vehicle, so the cashier was holding his head down while dealing with them. “By the time the cashier lifted up his head, he was staring right at a gun. The robber just walked up to the window and showed his gun and demanded cash. He said ’gimmi di money’.” Continued on page 5

iStrange Moohunt: Runaway cow captures German hearts BERLIN (AP) — A runaway cow named Yvonne is on the loose in Germany and the manhunt — or moohunt — for the Bavarian bovine has captivated the country. The freedom-loving cow ran away from a little farm in Bavaria in May and has managed to hide successfully in the forests of southern Germany ever since — despite her sturdy 1,500-pound (700-kilogram) figure. Locals have reported a few sightings of the brown dairy cow with the white head, but every time search teams have tried to capture her, Yvonne had already hoofed it from the area. A helicopter equipped with a thermal camera used in search-and-rescue missions returned Thursday empty-handed.
Searchers have tried to lure Yvonne into the open with food, with the bellows of her son Friesi and her sister Waltraud, even with a prospective mate named Ernst. Scores of volunteers are combing upper Bavaria’s woods for her. The six-year-old animal would have never made national headlines if it hadn’t been for a near-collision with a police car days after she broke away. The rural district office in Muehldorf reacted by labeling the big-eyed bovine a public danger and ordering her shot on sight. That prompted animal-rights activists to rally to her defense. A Facebook page calling for Yvonne’s rescue had more-than 23,000 “likes” by Friday, and Germany’s biggest-selling newspaper, Bild, has offered a euro10,000 ($14,369) award on its front page for anyone who helps find Yvonne. In the wake of all the attention, the order to shoot Yvonne has been suspended.

Criminal “masterminds” steal empty cash till Continued from front page

The robber was thought to have had an accomplice who waited close by during the botched stick-up. As they fled, they tried to steal a car but couldn’t even get that right as the vehicle they picked was locked! So the pair fled on foot with the empty haul. The member of staff said: “We were only able to see one, but others claim they saw someone else with a machete. “They grabbed the second register, and ran off with it, but that register was empty.” iNews was also told that the same KFC branch was robbed once last year, and the Shedden Road branch in George Town was also robbed earlier this year. The cashier that had the gun pointed at him is said to be uninjured but “badly shaken up” by the incident. The employee added: “The robbery prompted the store to close at least fifteen minutes earlier than usual. We were just getting ready to completely close down for the night and had already closed the front doors. “At the time when the robbery occurred, we were only operating from the side window.” Chief Inspector Angelique Howell

KFC drive-through window where the robbery took place added: “One of the men tried to get into a car in the parking lot but it was locked. “Both took off in the direction of Watler’s Road in ‘Dog City’.” But CI Howell said it would be unfair of her to assume the thieves were from ‘Dog City’ just because they fled in that direction. The robber, who was armed with the gun, is described as being six foot tall and skinny. He was wearing a black sweater and was covering his face with white material. The second thief had a green plaid hoodie and was about five foot three inches tall. Anyone with information is asked to call George Town CID on 949 4222 or Crimestoppers on 800 8477 (TIPS).

iStrange Snake bites man in car after yard sale purchase DUNCANSVILLE, Pa. (AP) — Police say a Pennsylvania man picked up more than he bargained for at a yard sale. Duncansville police Chief James Ott tells the Altoona Mirror that a small snake bit Donald Forshey on the leg Wednesday as he and his girlfriend were driving home from a yard sale. Ott says the snake likely slithered into a milk crate containing items the couple had purchased. The pair bailed out of the car on Interstate 99 and called 911. A state trooper was unable to help them find the snake, which Forshey tried to pin to the floor with a crutch he uses. An ambulance was called as a precaution, but Forshey is OK.
NY man, 61, suing over skimpy lifeguard trunks LONG BEACH, N.Y. (AP) — A 61-year-old New York man says he lost his job as a lifeguard when he refused to wear skimpy swim trunks for the annual swim test. Roy Lester tells the New York Daily News he was forced out of the job after 40 years in 2007 when he wanted to take the swim test in biking shorts instead of the tiny swim trunks. He filed a lawsuit against the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation in 2009. The lawsuit had been dismissed but was reinstated by an appeals court last week. Lester is a triathlete, but says no one his age should be wearing tiny trunks. He says the bathing suit requirement was aimed at getting rid of older lifeguards. State officials declined to comment.

Five killed at Belgium music festival HASSELT, Belgium (AP) — Young people screamed and fled in panic as a fierce thunderstorm shredded huge canvas tents and brought down metal scaffolding at an open-air festival in Belgium, killing five people. Hasselt Mayor Hilde Claes said Friday that two more people had died, bringing the toll from Thursday night’s disaster to five. About 140 were injured in the storm, 10 of them seriously, she said. All the dead were Belgians. Organisers cancelled the annual Pukkelpop festival near Hasselt, 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of Brussels and sent the 60,000 festival
goers home Friday in fleets of buses and trains. The brief, violent thunderstorm toppled the poles of several concert tents and left them in tatters, flapping in the wind. It also downed several trees and the scaffolding for the main stage, where rows of concert lights swung wildly before crashing down. Skin, the lead singer of Skunk Anansie, which was performing on the main stage when the storm hit, described the chaos on the band’s Facebook page. He said “a burning hot sunny day turned into a mini-hurricane.”
“(A) tower fell onto our truck, we had to run for our lives mid-set as hail hit the stage and the wind began to tear it to pieces,” he wrote. “This was the scariest moment I have ever seen or felt in my 20 years of being an artist.”

Opposition continues to mount to government’s wiretapping law as lawyers and legislators question its disregard for the judiciary, instead vesting sole authority in the hands of the Governor.
“The Governor is not a lawyer. A judge is the only one with the training for this, who can decide if there is a prima facie case. This is quite wrong,” said Ramon Alberga, OBE, lawyer, past president of the Law Society, and editor of the Law Reports. “I am not in favour of this at all. My view is that when it comes to

an important thing like wiretaps, it should be assigned to a justice of the Grand Court,” he said. Regulations allowing taps to be placed “in circumstances coming within the scope of international mutual assistance agreements” or “to safeguard the economic well-being of the islands”, were “far too broad”, Mr Alberga said. “Economic problems should be left to the Monetary Authority,“ he said, while the law does not allow appeals of gubernatorial decisions. “This is totally wrong. I am opposed to leaving this to the Governor and the Commissioner of Police,” Mr Alberga said, referring to the rule that “only the Commissioner of Police can request a warrant to intercept communications”. The law mandates a five-member, Cabinet-appointed oversight committee, chaired by one of Cayman’s near-200 Justices of the Peace, and comprising a retired judge, magistrate or lawyer; the Chief Officer of the Portfolio of Internal and External Affairs; a government ICT specialist; and a technical expert from an off-island law-enforcement agency. Legislators, Mr Alberga said, “should reconstitute this, fight it, repeal the old law and have a new one.” Mr Alberga’s recommendation refers to the original Information and Communications Technology Authority Bill, moved by Linford Pierson in 2002 and unanimously approved by the Legislative Assembly in October 2003, including an amendment to place a high court judge in authority rather than

the Governor. “We wanted to vest authority in a judge,” said Alden McLaughlin, leader of the People’s Progressive Movement, who, as an MLA, approved the amended bill with Leader of Government Business McKeeva Bush. “It was one of the few times we were in accord,” Mr McLaughlin told iNews. Like all local legislation, the act was referred to London, which instructed Governor Bruce Dinwiddie to refuse assent. “The Governor sent it back to the LA,” Mr McLaughlin said. London demanded repeal of the amendment, restoring the Governor’s authority “I spoke about it and said the government was very uncomfortable with that, and we sent it back to the Governor saying we wouldn’t change it.” The Hansard for the session quotes Mr McLaughlin saying wiretaps should have “the benefit of judicial scrutiny”. “We do not repose any trust in the judiciousness of that exercise by Her Majesty’s Government, of whom His Excellency the Governor is our representative,” he said. “We are not prepared to amend these Bills,” he said, addressing similar clauses in the concurrent Terrorism Law. was returned without amendment. Deputy Governor Donovan Ebanks said Monday’s regulations simply give effect to the 2003 law. “That war was fought eight years ago and the regulations we are sending out now have to be consistent with the law, they cannot supersede the law,” he said. “At present the Governor is the only one authorised to permit this.” At the Office of the Governor, spokesman Steve Moore said designation of the executive to oversee wiretaps, as opposed to a judge, “has been debated, and I’m sure there is a good reason”, for the clause, he said. “He recognises his duty and that it is the right thing to do.” Deputy Governor Ebanks said anyone so inclined was welcome to change the law, but anticipated few difficulties with the current bill. “Oh, yeah, yeah, any government, any premier can take it up and look to change it,” he said, “but, no, I don’t foresee any problems with this. “I was hoping to mitigate all the publicity this has gotten, but 95%, percent of people would like to be informed.” Not everyone has been, however. President of the Cayman Islands Law Society Charles Jennings, formerly managing partner of Maples and Calder, said he had learned of the bill only several days after its Monday publication.

“I was surprised we were not consulted beforehand because I am confident my members would have had a great deal to say about it,” Mr Jennings said. “I’m not sure I can think of another jurisdiction in which the power to approve phone tapping is left exclusively in the hands of the executive,” he said. “It would be all right, even if it were in the hands of one man, as long as there were judicial oversight. “I sometimes think the Law Society is sent draft legislation only when it is anticipated that we will agree with it.” North Side MLA Ezzard Miller declined to comment in detail, saying only that “I have some concerns about it, which I have expressed to the authorities”, while even former high court justice Priya Levers weighed in after winning a wiretapping case last week in Jamaica’s Supreme Court. “It goes against the grain just to start with, and I will have to read carefully before making a judgement, but to place the decision in the hands of one man was risky. she said, echoing Mr McLaughlin’s earlier remarks with a gentle swipe at former Cayman Islands Governor Stuart Jack. “I just don’t see why the lives of so many people should be in the hands of one man,” she said.

OPINIONS
The Editor Speaks Working together: RCIPS and you Colin Wilson
This newspaper has been preaching over the past three months that the only way we, as a country, can combat crime is to work with the RCIPS as a united team. This unification has to be on equal terms but the biggest and hardest problem is trust. The majority of the general public do not trust the police. The RCIPS seem not to trust the public. The public is secretive and the police seem to be worse. More powers are being given to the police every week and the public only learn about it after it is written into law and more of our liberties are eroded. Liberties that people fought wars over to achieve. These liberties are taken away at a stroke of a pen by a select few – some whom the people never even placed in power. The bloggers have a field day on some of the media sites. They delightfully and maliciously castigate the RCIPS at every turn. They believe nothing the police say and any initiative they instigate is met with derision. In turn the police prosecute people with the full intent of the law in the most trivial of offences that cost the country thousands and makes the general public shake their heads in disbelief. We have a situation now, when despite repeated requests from the RCIPS for individuals who had phone or messaging contact with missing person Kerran Baker to come forward. They have not. Now, the police have announced they are going to “be a bit more intelligently aggressive.” A simple question to RCIPS Supt. Marlon Bodden asking whether officers had known who was messaging Ms. Baker met with the reply, “Read through the lines.” I can understand the police appealing for people to come forward if they have been in contact with Ms. Baker by BBM or other means, but I cannot understand why only now they are going to interview these people if they know who they are. This is a high profile missing person investigation! Why leave it until now? We have had no update from the RCIPS re missing guns, the investigations into the armed robberies with the shootings of innocent people, nor the ones without. We have seen, by the thankfully bungling of some of these crimes, that the intelligence of the criminals is at
colin.wilson@ieyenews.com
the level of a ten year old (and here I am insulting that age group) yet they are able to get away and still remain at large despite all the resources the RCIPS have. All we get from the RCIPS is silence or appeals for help. The latest robbery at KFC last Thursday (18) is a case in point. My dog is more intelligent than these robbers and she doesn’t need to brandish weapons to make you scared of her. Her name is Sugar and she is not always sweet to people she thinks are trespassers. We have a phone tapping law that was put in place secretively and despite some very strong reservations iNews has looked at it positively. Despite the costly mess a former governor left us in, the sole person who can order the phone tapping is the Governor. All the media has taken up the gauntlet for tougher penalties for drunken driving and we are on the same side. I have not received any feedback from my questioning why we have to have a limited time for gun amnesty? No matter when law-abiding people hand a gun in voluntarily it should be with no risk of prosecution. Instead harsher penalties are instigated prohibiting anyone doing this. The RCIPS are amazed at the poor response to the amnesty especially at their meetings that were designed to deal with a whole host of other concerns outside the handing in of guns. When you have an advertising campaign blazing the words “Gun Amnesty Meeting”, at a time when a large number of people are away on vacation and criminals are brandishing guns and doing indiscriminate shooting, why are they amazed? The old days, when I was a young lad and the policeman (or Bobby as we called him) patrolled the streets on his bicycle, he knew who the “wronguns” were. He was respected as we knew his name. Those days have gone. Yes, we do have community officers, and I welcomed the initiative, but that seems to have disappeared. The police now patrol in pairs, housed in air-conditioned new fast cars and don’t even stop for a friendly wave or a word. They flash by our house whilst my wife is gardening thankful that she is not brandishing a gun, although I am fearful she may be arrested for using a machete. How many of them know she is the daughter of deceased Chief of Police Major, “Roddy” Watler. The ‘Dog City’ Watler Road is named after him. I wonder what he is thinking of all this?

Nothing “fishy” about Barkers, insists Eugene Kevin Creary kevin.creary@ieyenews.com
Veteran boat captain and MLA Eugene Ebanks insists he has no hidden agenda, and his proposals to have a hurricane safe harbour in Barkers was made with the best intentions. Other boat colleagues in the marine world are unhappy with his ideas to construct the site in West Bay. A safe harbour, or safe hole, is needed to prevent boats damaging residential properties during hurricanes. Many homes were left in a serious state of disrepair after Ivan tore through the area sending vessels into pools and crashing into buildings. Fellow boat captain, Bryan Ebanks says he and other owners are unhappy at the suggested location in Barkers and say Salt Creek is the better option. But MLA Eugene Ebanks said since the development of luxury homes in Salt Creek, Barkers is the better choice. He said: “The two main reasons for which the boat owners are suggesting Salt Creek is that Barkers is closer to the sea, and its elevation is not as high as Salt Creek. “Salt Creek has traditionally been a better location, but since the development of the area you now have multimillion-dollar homes there.” The MLA indicated that the south and west side of the Salt Creek area are residential properties, but that the north side of the area, which the boat owners are referring to, is underdeveloped. But he said the residents of the other areas have had unfavourable experiences with fishing boats during Hurricane Ivan and would not be too willing to have a hurricane safe house within the vicinity. He said: “You are not going to get the residents to agree with having boats docked there. Even the people that live there that have boats have said that their neighbours don’t want them to have their boats there during a hurricane. “The people do not want this because of what happened there to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

during Ivan. Boats ended up in people’s pools, damaging people’s homes, and in addition to that, to get to Salt Creek by land you have to go across private property.” MLA Eugene Ebanks says that he also believes those who wrongfully suspect there are hidden agendas could be spreading false messages. He said: “I know there are certain elements out there that are trying to imply the worst of the worst. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is being implied that I am trying to get a hurricane hole in Barkers because I want to dredge a channel across the head of Barkers, into the reef, but nothing could be further from the truth. There is no hidden agenda.” The West Bay representative also dismissed any suggestion that he was not being sensitive to the boat owners needs, and asserted that he too is fully Caymanian and is equally concerned
about the fishermen’s welfare. He said: “I am a fifth generation Caymanian, I started with my dad in the watersports business since I was nine years old, my father is now 95 years old. “I have known these guys all my life. Eight out of ten can always call on me; if there is something I can do to help them, they’ve got it.” Mr. Ebanks says that he is not ignoring the fishermen, and he believes that they should be allowed to voice their concerns, but he is not willing to accommodate opposition he finds unconstructive. He added: “They are as important as anybody else. They all have a right to express their concerns. “Whether they agree or disagree, I know that when the time comes they will use the facility. All constructive input is welcomed. We should be in a position to be able to agree to disagree.”

Police fear the worst for missing Kerran
Cayman Islands Netball Association
Tad Stoner tad.stoner@ieyenews.com
Police for the first time conceded they were treating the search for missing 25-year-old Kerran Baker as a murder investigation, saying too much time had elapsed to expect much else. “This is day 20 of the disappearance of Kerran Baker,” said Chief Superintendent John Jones (pictured right). “The investigation is still very much alive, but by virtue of three weeks, we fear the worst, that something criminal has happened to her.” Concerns have been mounting for more than two weeks about the fate of Ms Baker, who vanished on 30 July, leaving few traces apart from groceries and a handbag in her Bodden Town home, and her Honda Civic car keys and unspecified “materials” -- said to be a set of documents – in the vicinity of Pedro Castle. “We have nothing concrete to say what happened, that someone has done this or someone has done that to her,” Mr Jones said. “We are applying the disciplines to this investigation as to a murder investigation. “We were concerned about this from the get-go,” he said, explaining that “not a weekend goes by where we don’t hear of a missing person, and nine times out of 10, there is a happy ending. Someone has had a night out, stayed with someone and not told anyone else about it, but with the circumstances of this, we were immediately concerned.” Mr Jones said police would continue to pursue both forensic analyses and Ms Baker’s BBM contacts just prior to her Saturday-evening disappearance. Investigators had identified “not less than 10, but not as many as dozens” of people who had contact with her. He declined to elaborate on the details of the electronic sleuthing, but said Canadian Blackberry-service provider Research in Motion had “been very helpful’, despite certain to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

While renewing police pleas for public cooperation, Mr Jones politely dismissed repeated claims that Ms Baker had appeared in dreams. “With the best will in the world, and trying to be helpful, people have contacted us to say they had a dream or a vision. But we operate on facts and these are not facts,” he said. “There are very few cases where this kind of inquiry has been brought to a happy conclusion with this kind of thing,” Mr Jones said.

Crash sends truck into ditch Ivy Lichtenstein
ivy.lichtenstein@ieyenews.com
On early Friday afternoon an accident occurred on Crewe Road opposite Rosedale Gardens. Due to poor weather conditions, an Isuzu Elf flat bed truck tried to make the corner while proceeding towards the Kings Sport Centre. The wet roads forced the truck to slide into oncoming traffic where it collided with a Brown Ford F-250, sending the truck and its passengers into the nearby ditch. All passengers were able to safely exit both vehicles and escaped the collision without need of medical attention.

Young Nation-building scholars leave Dozens of Young Nation-builders Programme (YNBP) scholarship overseas scholarship recipients came together last week, along with family members and government officials. The informal event enabled the students to meet each other and form acquaintances, while meeting with the Premier the Hon. McKeeva Bush, OBE JP, and officials involved in the project. Mr. Bush congratulated the youths as they “embark on an exciting journey of discovery and growth.” He said that while many Caymanians have undertaken tertiary studies overseas over the years – including through government scholarships – this new project generates additional options to meet the educational needs of young people. “It offers more flexibility in assisting those who might not qualify for other scholarships, but who demonstrate a strong desire and ability to learn, and who show talent in their areas of
14
interest,” said Mr. Bush. “I am particularly happy that there are a number of young boys seizing this opportunity. It is from people such as these that we will source the next generation of top civil servants and business administrators.” Mr. Bush added that the sum result of the YNBP effort should be a more productive and diverse society, and he emphasised that the concept of ‘nation-building’ is not just local. “This pro-social tool has been a means of building advanced communities,” he said. “Countries such as Germany and Japan, the modern economic miracles, have shared at least one common thread – a focus on developing their people. “So I am more than happy that this project is going ahead. The overall nation building picture may seem grandiose to some, but this scholarship aspect, which benefits more than 30 young people, is certainly money well-spent!” Areas of study range from
medicine, music and tourism, to criminal justice and business. One teenager, who is using the YNBP funds to supplement his sports scholarship, said, “This is a great opportunity for me because I get to focus on achieving my dream.” Another student, enrolled in the University of Miami, aspires to be a doctor. “The YNBP covers half of my tuition,” she said, “...while the remainder is paid by an education scholarship.” She urges young people to take advantage of any opportunity to access higher learning. One young lady, an education major attending Indian River State College in Florida, is focussed on elementary education /special needs. “I’ve already worked in a primary school for more than a year,” she said. “That opened my eyes to what I want to do; it’s rewarding to assist with their educational needs and help build their futures. I really appreciate the YNBP assistance.” to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Here are a few things worth considering before going on your next journey: • Before travelling, check with your provider that your account is provisioned for roaming. • Providers have roaming partner arrangements specific to different countries so you can always ask your network what the preferred choice of roaming networks are for the countries you are visiting.
Register online early to avoid long lines. Classes fill up quickly. 168 Olympic Way, GT

• Call minutes and texts that are included in your monthly package are not applicable when roaming. • Incoming calls to your cell phone are not free! You can check with your service provider the cost of receiving a call when abroad. • Be conscious of the fact that you get charged for voicemails left on your phone as they are considered incoming calls even if you don’t check them once received. Another option is to disable your voicemail.

Lorraine Carey invites readers into her life Lorraine Carey at Books & Books on Wednesday, September 7 at 7pm for the launch of her debut book, Losing Ground, an autobiography in which the author comes to terms with her gift of intuition. This free event will include a book discussion and signing.
About the Book “It is hard to believe that it would take some forty years to finally realise the gifts that I possess. I guess deep down I always knew I had some innate wisdom and so did my mother, but I never had the time to develop it.” – Lorraine Carey In Losing Ground, the true story of a gifted intuitive, Lorraine takes you on her journey of divine guidance. While travelling along a path of self-destruction, Lorraine recounts the mysterious visits from ghosts and angels and the visions and messages from the other side that helped her overcome tragedy and ultimately led her to spiritual awakening. She explains how a divine power guided her out of unemployment, grief and despair, and brought her to a beautiful island in the Caribbean, where she found the inspiration to share her story. Losing Ground is a moving and motivational memoir that will appeal to anyone who believes that there is a higher power with a meaningful master plan for everyone. As Lorraine uncovers the hidden messages behind repetitive patterns in her own life that helped her discover her master plan, readers will relate to her experiences and find solace in knowing that we are all steadily moving towards a destination with purpose and powerful intent.

Lorraine attended Youngstown State University and graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education and Language Arts in 1976. She went on to travel the U.S. with her husband and taught Language Arts in four states over some twenty-five years. It was not until Lorraine discovered her psychic ability that she felt compelled to write her life story. After moving to the Cayman Islands and taking a break from teaching, Lorraine found time to complete Losing Ground. She is now working on a sequel, On Island: Eyes Wide Open, to document her recent paranormal experiences, as well as a children’s novel. Summer Camp 2011
We continue our serialisation of Anne by Constance Fenimore Woolson
Anne
“Come, Annet, you know you like it.”
Part 28
She went through her personations timidly, the wild forest her background, the open air and blue Straits her scenery. The audience found fault, but, on the whole, enjoyed the performance, and demanded frequent repetitions. After a while Miss Lois was admitted into the secret, and disapproved, and was curious, and listened, and shook her head, but ended by liking the portraitures, which were in truth as fantastic as phantasmagoria. Miss Lois had never seen a play or read a novel in her life. For some time the forest continued Anne’s theatre, and more than once Miss Lois had taken afternoon walks, for which her conscience troubled her: she could not decide whether it was right or wrong. But winter came, and gradually it grew into a habit that Anne should recite at the church-house now and then, the Indian servant who happened to be at that time the occupant of the kitchen being sent carefully away for the evening, in order that her eye should not be guiltily glued to the key-hole during the exciting visits of Ophelia and Juliet. Anne was always reluctant to give these recitations now that she had an audience. “Out in the woods,” she said, “I had only the trees and the silence. I never thought of myself at all.” “But Miss Lois and I are as handsome as trees; and as to silence, we never say a word,” replied Rast. “Come, Annet, you know you like it.” “Yes; in—in one way I do.” “Then let us take that way,” said Rast. Immediately after the early dinner the little cavalcade set out for the hermitage of Père Michaux, which was on an island of its own at some distance from the village island; to reach it they journeyed over the ice. The boys’ sled went first, André riding, the other two drawing: they were to take turns. Then came old Antoine and his dogs, wise- looking, sedate creatures with widespread, to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

awkward legs, big paws, and toes turned in. René and Lebeau were the leaders; they were dogs of age and character, and as they guided the sledge they also kept an eye to the younger dogs behind. The team was a local one; it was not employed in carrying the mails, but was used by the villagers when they crossed to the various islands, the fishing grounds, or the Indian villages on the mainland. Old Antoine walked behind with Anne by his side: she preferred to walk. Snugly ensconced in the sledge in a warm nest of furs was Tita, nothing visible of her small self save her dark eyes, which were, however, most of the time closed: here there was nothing to watch. The bells on the dogs sounded out merrily in the clear air: the boys had also adorned themselves with bells, and pranced along like colts. The sunshine was intensely bright, the blue heavens seemed full of its shafts, the ice below glittered in shining lines; on the north and south the dark evergreens of the mainland rose above the white, but toward the east and west the fields of ice extended unbroken over the edge of the horizon. Here they were smooth, covered with snow; there they were heaped in hummocks and ridges, huge blocks piled against each other, and frozen solid in that position where the wind and the current had met and fought. The atmosphere was cold, but so pure and still that breathing was easier

than in many localities farther toward the south. There was no dampness, no strong raw wind; only the even cold. A feather thrown from a housetop would have dropped softly to the ground in a straight line, as drop one by one the broad leaves of the sycamore on still Indian summer days. The snow itself was dry; it had fallen at intervals during the winter, and made thicker and thicker the soft mantle that covered the water and land. When the flakes came down, the villagers always knew that it was warmer, for when the clouds were steel-bound, the snow could not fall. “I think we shall have snow again to-morrow,” said old Antoine in his voyageur dialect. “Step forward, then, genteelly, René. Hast thou no conscience, Lebeau?” The two dogs, whose attention had been a little distracted by the backward vision of André conveying something to his mouth, returned to their duty with a jerk, and the other dogs behind all rang their little bells suddenly as they felt the swerve of the leaders back into the track. For there was a track over the ice toward Père Michaux’s island, and another stretching off due eastward—the path of the carrier who brought the mails from below; besides these there were no other ice-roads; the Indians and hunters came and went as the bird flies. Père Michaux’s island was not in sight from the village; it was, as the boys said, round the corner.

How to avoid becoming a crime victim “Be aware of what is going on around you” Georgina Wilcox
a safe place. When you have to keep them out, such as when talking on your cellphone, be aware of your surroundings. Place yourself in a position where it would be hard for someone to run or walk by you and hold onto them tightly when someone is near. As with all the other crimes listed here, pay attention to your surroundings.
georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com
I was speaking to an old friend of mine – a retired law enforcement officer who worked in a precinct in one of the USA’s busiest cities. He visited Grand Cayman recently and he reads iNews every day. He is aware of how our serious crime rate has grown and whilst here he took a long slow ride and walk around all our districts. Even though we are three small islands he said there was still much in common to crime in the US. He came up with these tips on how to avoid becoming a crime victim.
Unattended Property Many people become a victim to this crime. This mainly happens when someone is in a public place and puts down their wallet, purses, etc., doesn’t pay attention, and then someone picks it up when no one is watching. Popular places for this crime to occur are coffee shops, bars, supermarkets, gyms, churches, schools, your place of business, just about any public place. To help avoid this happening to you follow these guidelines. Never leave anything down by itself, even where you work! It’s as simple as that. If you do have to put something down make sure that you or someone that you are with keeps a close eye on it. If a criminal is trying to take it odds are he won’t if he/she sees someone paying attention. These criminals want to steal your property and walk away when no one is watching, they don’t want to be seen or chased. Do not leave items of value in your car, especially your wallet when playing sports or when you are at the beach.
Pickpocket Otherwise known as a Grand Larceny in the American Penal Law. This usually occurs when someone removes something from someone else’s pocket, bag or purse. Famous places for this to occur are buses, bus stops, bars, stores, sports matches, to blog visit www.ieyenews.com
Robberies
beaches, cinemas, crowded sidewalks. It can happen in just about any busy, noisy, crowded place. Follow these suggestions so they don’t get you. For women always carry your pocketbook towards the front. When carried on the back or side you cannot see when someone is trying to reach in. For the men always carry your wallet in your front pocket instead of your back pocket or in a jacket pocket. For those of you who are tired or had too much to drink and are travelling on public transportation, don’t fall asleep! Falling asleep makes it much easier and the criminals will even cut your pocket open to get out that wallet, it happens all the time on beaches. In addition to the above just be aware of what is going on around you, criminals will strike when someone is not paying attention.
Snatches More famously known to the public as a purse or chain snatch. There are many new snatches out there today. The criminal will take just about anything from you. These include cell phones, money, iPods, phone cards, and credit cards. Many times these criminals are on bicycles for a fast snatch and getaway. Right now cell phones seem to be the most popular. The best way to avoid this from happening to you is not to carry those cellphones, ipods, money and cards in your hand. When not using these items put them away in
A Robbery is when someone takes property of another by using force. That force can be physical or just the threat of force. I save this for last because all the crimes discussed above can easily become Robberies. If the purse snatch is done with force, it’s a Robbery. Many times a criminal will use force to steal that money, cell phone, iPod, etc., instead of just snatching it. So if you follow all the guidelines above for unattended property, snatches, pickpockets you will automatically reduce your chances of getting robbed. When driving in your car, make sure you keep your doors locked to prevent someone entering. Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front of you so you can move forward and around if necessary when approached by someone. If you live in an apartment building never enter the building with someone you’ve never seen before. If you see a stranger in the lobby or hallway after entering turn around and leave. Use extreme caution and make sure no one is following you when you have just come from the following places: cash checking, banks or any place where you displayed some money. Follow these safety guidelines and you will definitely reduce your chances of becoming a victim. If a criminal approaches you and tries to commit any of these crimes, it is important to remember not to resist. Your life is more important than your property. Property can always be replaced but not you. Stay safe!

Schleswig-Holstein’s data protection commissioner, Thilo Weichert, ordered state institutions to shut down the fan pages on the social networking site and remove the “Like” button from their websites, saying it leads to profiling that violates German and European law BERLIN (AP) — A German data protection authority is “unliking” Facebook’s “Like” button. The state of Schleswig-Holstein’s data protection commissioner, Thilo Weichert, on Friday ordered state institutions to shut down the fan pages on the social networking site and remove the “Like” button from their websites, saying it leads to profiling that violates German and European law. Facebook insisted Friday that is in full compliance with European data protection laws. On Friday, Weichert issued a statement saying technical analysis by his office shows Facebook violated German and European data protection laws by passing content data to the social network’s servers in the U.S. “Whoever visits facebook.com or uses a plug-in must expect that he or she will be tracked by the company for two years,” Weichert said. “Facebook builds a broad individual and for members even a personalized profile.” A Facebook spokesman conceded that the company can see “information such as the IP address” of users who visit a site with a “Like” button. “We delete this technical data within 90 days,” said the spokesman, who

did not give his name in keeping with company policy. “That is in keeping with normal industry standards.” Weichert’s office ordered website owners in Schleswig-Holstein to “immediately stop the passing on of user data to Facebook in the USA by deactivating the respective services” and threatened to take legal action if they fail to comply. He also urged Internet users in general to “keep their fingers from clicking on social plug-ins” and “not set up a Facebook account” to avoid being profiled. The keepers of Germany’s strict privacy laws have repeatedly clashed on issues of privacy with international Internet giants, such as Facebook and Google — often with success. Last year Google allowed Germans who opposed its Street View mapping system to blur images of their homes, while Facebook in January granted members more control over their email address books, after a dispute over its “Friend Finder” service. Germany’s latest spat with the Palo Alto, California-based Facebook also comes a week after a leading member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative party in SchleswigHolstein stepped down after admitting to having an affair with a
16-year-old he met over the social networking site. Christian von Boetticher’s resignation sparked a debate about the role of social media in politicians’ lives, with German newspapers carrying reports from party members, angry that the state legislator spent more time posting personal information to Facebook than focusing on his job. He has since deleted his Facebook profile.

APPLY SUNSCREEN PROPERLY.
The end of the school year is here and savvy moms and dads by now have made all the arrangements for summer. Summer camps and leisurely days at the pool or beach are just a few of the summer rituals for many families. However if you're tempted to let your child play outdoors for even a few minutes without proper sun protection, you might want to think twice. Adolescence and childhood are critical periods during which exposure to UV radiation is more likely to contribute to skin cancer in later life. Children with fair skin, blond or red hair and blue or green eyes are at the highest risk of sunburn. But darker-skinned children also need sun protection. With this in mind, it’s important that parents teach their children how to enjoy fun in the sun safely.
LIMIT OUTDOOR PLAYTIME BETWEEN 10A.M. AND 4P.M.
Apply a thick, even coat to all exposed areas 20 - 30 minutes before your child goes out in the sun. Choose a sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher. Make sure it's labeled "broad spectrum," which means it blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight. For your little ones, sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide should be selected as these compounds are less irritating than others. Sunscreen sticks are best for the face because they are sweat proof and less likely to drip. Don't forget nose, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck; lips can also burn, so apply a lip balm with SPF protection. Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours, or after sweating or swimming.
COVER FROM HEAD TO TOE. Wearing protective clothing and hats is one of the primary ways of warding off UV damage. When wet, light coloured clothing transmits just as much sunlight as bare skin. Keep your kids covered with dark colours, long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. And don't forget the accessories: sunglasses with UV protection to guard against burned corneas, and hats to prevent sunburned scalps and faces. Protective clothing, hats with wide brims, and sunglasses are just as important for babies. At the beach, bring along a large umbrella.
Parents, you are the best teacher by practicing sun safety yourself. If your child sees you following sun safety rules, he'll take them for granted and follow suit. Teach every member of the family how to protect their skin and eyes. With proper supervision, children can learn to protect themselves and enjoy summer fun without sacrificing the health of their skin.
Avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun's rays are at their strongest. Even on cloudy or cooler days, ultraviolet (UV) rays remain strong. Shady spots can be just as tricky because of reflected light. If your child is playing outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply ample sunscreen.
WATCH OUT FOR MEDICATIONS. Some medications increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, so make sure to ask your doctor whether your child may be at risk. Prescription antibiotics and acne medications are the most notorious culprits, but when in doubt, ask.

Fibre optics has been fabricated from materials that transmit light and are made from a bundle of very thin glass or plastic fibres enclosed in a tube. One end is at a source of light and the other end is a camera lens, used to channel light and images around the bends and corners. There is a highly transparent core of glass, or plastic encircled by a covering called “cladding”. Light is stimulated through a source on one end of the fibre optic and as the light travels through the tube, the cladding is there to keep it all inside. A fibre optic light source can carry light over mass distances, ranging from an inch to over 100 miles.
There are two kinds of fibre optics. The single-mode fibre optic is used for high speed and long distance transmissions because they have extremely tiny cores and they accept light only along the axis of the fibres. Tiny lasers send light directly into the fibre optic where there are low-loss connectors used to join the fibres within the system without substantially degrading the light signal. Then there are multi-mode which have much larger cores and accept light from a variety of angles and can use more types of light sources. Multi-mode fibre optics also use less expensive connectors, but cannot be used over long distances. Fibre optics is widely used in communication systems. They are far superior to systems using traditional copper cables. Fibre optic communication systems are installed in large networks of fibre optic bundles all around the world and even under the oceans.

When Vidic, 29, was injured against West Brom on Sunday it was originally thought he would be out for two weeks. “It is difficult to say with calves but it is longer than we thought,” admitted Ferguson. But there was better news about Rio Ferdinand, who could return from a hamstring injury by the end of August. It was thought that Ferdinand, who like Vidic was replaced during the West Brom game, would be sidelined until the start of October. That would have resulted in him missing England’s upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales, but further tests have shown he could now return in time for the Premier League champions’ home match against Arsenal on 28 August. “Rio is not as bad as we thought and he could be ready for our game with Arsenal,” said Ferguson. “I don’t think he’ll be ready for Monday, but it’s amazing how assessments can change in the space of a few days.” Ferguson will now pair Phil Jones and Jonny Evans together at the heart of his defence for the visit of Tottenham on Monday, while Chris Smalling will fill in at right-back.

Video footage of the fighting between the Georgetown University men’s basketball team and the Bayi Rockets, the army’s Chinese Basketball Association team, on Thursday night in Beijing spread on the Internet and worldwide TV news. It showed players punching each other and throwing chairs, forcing play to end early. “The Bayi team have really lost face now,” wrote a user named anoia on China’s popular microblog Sina Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter. “No matter who is right and who is wrong, you have fought the visiting team as the host ... especially while their second man in charge is in this country.” It was the latest instance of on-court fighting by China, whose players have been fined tens of thousands of dollars by the world and Asian federations for scrapping with opponents. In October, China’s national basketball coach, a manager and three players were suspended for an ugly brawl with Brazil’s team that left one Chinese player in a neck brace. Fights are also not uncommon at Chinese football matches.

iSports Hurricanes want to focus on football, not scandal CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Despite having a dozen teammates implicated in the scandal that may impact the future of Miami football, two Hurricanes said Friday they are trying to focus on the coming season and not possible sanctions.

Center Tyler Horn and running back Mike James were the first Miami players to meet reporters since convicted Ponzi-scheme architect and former university booster Nevin Shapiro (pictured) claimed that he provided money, prostitutes, cars and gifts to some current and former Hurricanes in a story Yahoo Sports published Tuesday. The NCAA has been investigating Miami for five months, and the school is bracing for the possibility of stiff penalties at some point. “Well, of course, it was a shock to hear those allegations,” Horn said. “But we’re focused on football. That’s all we can focus on. That’s all we can control.” Miami’s decision to allow Horn and James the opportunity to take the first questions posed to players since the scandal broke was not entirely coincidental. Not only are they among the more expressive Hurricanes, but neither is among the current players implicated by what Shapiro told Yahoo Sports. “Life is easy regardless,” James said. “We just know we don’t pay attention to outside things. We just focus on us, and that’s about it.”

Bell and Pietersen hit record partnership against India THE OVAL, LONDON: Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen piled up England’s highest partnership against India as the hosts took control of the fourth Test at The Oval. The duo, who came together with England on the back foot, sapped the life out of the tourists with huge hundreds in a phenomenal stand of 350 on the second day. Pietersen made 175 and Bell finished unbeaten on 181 - his fourth Test century of the summer - as England closed on a commanding 457-3. Together they treated a capacity crowd to a batting exhibition, their contrasting styles making the spectacle all the richer for the 23,500 spectators. Both went past 150 in the final hour as they surpassed Graham Gooch and Allan Lamb’s partnership of 308 against India at Lord’s in 1990 and posted England’s seventh highest stand against any team. It was particularly galling for an India side who had dominated the opening session of the day with a vastly improved bowling and fielding display. They took the first wicket with the fifth ball of the day when Alastair Cook pushed lazily at Ishant Sharma and edged to Virender Sehwag at first slip for 34. England did not score a run until the last ball of fourth over, with Andrew Strauss finding scoring particularly difficult. The captain added only two runs to his overnight 38 in 32 balls before he wafted his bat loosely at a ball from Sreesanth and nicked through to MS Dhoni. With India in the ascendancy for the first time since the early stages of the second Test at Trent Bridge, Bell and Pietersen batted cautiously early on. Pietersen almost fell in the last over before lunch when a glance off his hips dropped just short of leg slip Suresh Raina. But the momentum swung
Publisher Joan E Wilson Bell and Pietersen hit a record 350-run stand against India, one run short of The Oval record
dramatically after the interval, with Bell and Pietersen going on the offensive and cracking 59 runs in 10 overs - eight more than England mustered in the entire first session. Pietersen slapped two Amit Mishra full tosses for four and Bell brought up his fifty with a flurry of four boundaries in five balls. With the series back in its default mode of England dominance, there was a certain inevitability in both men reaching three figures. Bell got there first with a square cut off Raina and Pietersen brought up his ton with a pull to the fence off the first ball after tea. Attempting to repeat the shot off Sharma’s next ball, he top-edged it in the air and was dropped by Gautam Gambhir as he back-pedalled from
mid-on, banging his head into the bargain. It was a costly error as the onslaught continued with Pietersen charging down the wicket to club boundary after boundary and Bell keeping his own score ticking over with some textbook strokeplay until he let himself go by heaving the hapless Mishra for two consecutive sixes. Pietersen smashed Raina over his head for his 27th four but was out next ball as he mis-hit a drive and fed a straightforward return catch to the bowler. He departed to a standing ovation, safe in the knowledge that his exploits with Bell had put England in a great position to go on and record a series whitewash.
