A 70 year old woman has relived the moment a callous gunman robbed her family store – firing his weapon wildly in the air as he did so. Eunice Seymour has worked behind the counter at Uncle Clem’s Meat and Grocery store in George Town for more than 30 years. But on Saturday night her world fell apart when a lone gunman robbed her store after blasting a hole in the ceiling. In a separate incident less than 24 hours later, thieves also targeted another shop in the same street. Her granddaughter was in the shop on Mary Street with her when the thieves struck just before 9pm. Yesterday Mrs Seymour relived the terrifying moment the thief struck – and said it felt like she was in a Hollywood movie. And she said her body shakes when she hears the slightest noise that reminds her of the unmistakable sound of the gunshot. Continued on page 5

Miss Cayman confident about Miss Universe Christopher Tobutt christopher.tobutt@ieyenews.com

Cameras flashed incessantly at the entrance to Owen Roberts International Airport as Miss Cayman Islands, Cristin Alexander checked in for a flight to Miami, the first stage of a journey to the Miss Universe pageant in São Paulo, Brazil. Cristin, 24, won the category of Best Legs and was the overall winner of Miss Cayman in 2010. She competed in Miss World 2010 finishing at top 40. Cristin Alexander recently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts

degree in Psychology with the added distinction of making the Dean’s list in her final year at University of Western Ontario. There are 89 contestants taking part in this year’s pageant, surpassing the previous record of 86. The pageant is possibly the most publicised beauty contest in the world, typically with around 600 million viewers. “I feel confident. I need some sleep so I’m going to rest on the plane, but I feel good otherwise. It’s taken a lot of work. The last couple of days have been crazy. There was a chance that the costume wasn’t going to come on time and it came yesterday. So, yes, everything’s come together nicely,” Cristin said. Cristin has a passion for instilling a greater sense of national pride and identity in young Caymanians and hopes to use her involvement in the Miss Cayman competition as a launch pad to achieve this goal. As a strong and independent woman, she aspires to be a good role model who by example, will empower our youth to reach their fullest potential. Samantha Widmer, one of this year’s contestants in Miss Cayman, was sharing the same flight as Cristin to Miami. “I’m going to buy my gown for this year’s pageant,” she said.

iStrange Thirsty boy stuck in chimney trying to get drink WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) — Police in Utah say a thirsty 8-year-old boy trying to get a drink in a neighbour’s home by sliding down through the chimney was trapped for more than four hours. West Valley City police Sgt. Robert Hamilton says the boy climbed a tree to get to the roof, then went down the chimney feet first on Friday. Hamilton says the boy lives several blocks away and recently was in the home for a play date. The boy made it 30 feet down before he became wedged between the basement and main floor. Homeowner Richard Draper says the family had dinner out and came home to hear crying sounds in the chimney. Rescuers cut an 8-by-5-foot hole in a wall to free the boy, who suffered mostly scrapes and bruises.

Hawk swoops inside NYC apartment building NEW YORK (AP) — A redtailed hawk caused quite a stir after flying through an open window of a five-story New York City apartment building. Tenant Joe Moderski says he thought he had missed a pillow fight because there were so many feathers in the hallway of the Upper West Side building. Moderski says he arrived home around 3:30 p.m. Sunday to find the hawk outside his top-floor apartment. He says the raptor flew at him, just missing his face, so he took off running. Police tried unsuccessfully to catch the hawk by tempting it with bread crumbs. Two emergency service police officers eventually caught the bird and took it to the city’s Animal Care and Control center.

Gun drama was like “being in a movie”

Continued from front page

Kevin Creary kevin.creary@ieyenews.com

Mrs Seymour said: “I am not relaxed, after the incident on Saturday night. It feels almost like with every little crack that I hear, my body is just shaking.” Mrs. Seymour tearfully told iNews how the horror unfolded. She said: “It was like a scene in a movie. It was a drama. The entire robbery took place in just about three minutes. I have never seen anything happen like this before. We were just about to close when we saw the gunman. “The first person that he approached was my granddaughter. I didn’t see when another cashier ran off, or the men that were buying the fish. “ I heard my granddaughter scream out “Grandma!” Realising what was going on, I started to shout out to her to give him the cash. Soon after the second customer ran off, the masked gunman fired a shot. “When I heard my granddaughter cry out, I thought that she was shot. I started to cry out that my granddaughter was shot, and then the gunman turned the gun towards a second cashier, ordering money.” According to Mrs. Seymour, not only did the gunman rob an undetermined amount of money from the establishment, but he also looted some of their merchandise from off the shelves. “While he was leaving, he was just scraping everything from off the shelf.

Eunice Seymour behind the counter at Uncle Clem’s I was in shock.” she said. The store’s manager, Mrs. Heather Seymour, Eunice’s daughter, says she is greatly saddened by the incident, as the entire family and all staffers of the establishment are very generous and are well liked within the community. “This little place gives everything to everybody. The community is very disappointed and upset. People in the area all swarmed the police. They are both angry and surprised that this could happen.” she said. The police have arrested a 52-year-old man in connection with the incident. The police picked up the man, who is now being held on suspicion of robbery, shortly after the incident. Meanwhile less than a quarter of a mile away at Solomon’s Groceries thieves struck just 24 hours before. Police have not said if they are linking the crimes.

The owner of Solomon’s Groceries, Lewis Solomon, says he is gravely concerned about the current spate and frequency of robberies within the Island. A lone gunman demanded cash before fleeing empty handed Mr. Solomon said: “It was an attempted robbery, but it wouldn’t be the first time that I was robbed. “At this time, with the crime rate being what it is, it is hard to think about expanding business. “There were no customers in the shop at the time. We were closed when I was confronted. The man with the gun came over and said, ‘Big man, give me what you got.’ “I said I had no money to give him. He ran across the road and went through a parking lot.” Anyone with information about either robbery should contact George Town Police Station on 949 4222.

iTech Verizon

NEW YORK (AP) — Thousands of striking Verizon workers will return to work Tuesday, though their contract dispute isn’t over yet. The 45,000 employees, who have been on strike since Aug. 7, agreed to return to work while they negotiate with Verizon Communications Inc. on the terms of a new contract. The workers are employed in nine states from Massachusetts to Virginia in the landline division. Among the issues in dispute is the company’s move to freeze pensions and its demand that workers contribute to their health insurance premiums. The company argues that it has to reduce benefits as the landline business deteriorates. More Americans are forgoing such lines in favor of mobile phones. The employees’ unions say the company is profitable and can afford to maintain the benefits. For now, the two sides say they have narrowed their disagreements and have agreed on a structure for the negotiations. The workers will return to work under the terms of a contract that expired Aug. 6. “The major issues remain to be discussed, but overall, issues now are focused and narrowed,” the Communications Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers said in a statement. Marc Reed, Verizon’s executive vice president of human resources, credited the company’s managers with “ably meeting the needs of our customers” during the 14-day strike. This enabled the company to “withstand the strike without significant disruption to customer service,” he said. The company said it will “quickly address any backlog in repairs and unfulfilled requests for service.” to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

If anyone is thinking of going anywhere near Miami at the end of the week I suggest you change your plans. Hurricane Irene is heading for the Florida coast and Rob Lightbown, founder of Crown Weather Services said yesterday (22) on his website, “Based on everything I have looked at this morning, I think Irene will track northwest and north-northwestward just off of the east coast of Florida as a Category 3 or a Category 4 hurricane during Friday and then turn more to the north-northwest during Friday night into Saturday. My thinking right now is for a landfall somewhere between Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina as a Category 3 or a Category 4 hurricane on Saturday morning.” He also gave this warning: “Now, with that said, this forecast track is certainly not etched in stone and many changes in the overall forecast

PROSTATE CANCER track is likely in the coming days. I strongly urge all of our Crown Weather friends from the Florida Keys to eastern North Carolina to watch the track and forecasts surrounding Irene extremely closely. Police have good information over missing Kerran Tad Stoner tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

Police have narrowed their inquiries in the search for missing Kerran Baker, having interviewed everyone that had Blackberry Messenger contacts with her on the night she disappeared. “The good news is that we have visited and spoken to everybody with BBM contact with Kerran after 7:00pm on 30 July,” said Chief Superintendent John Jones yesterday, saying police had talked to 10 people, although he declined to say how many were in her BBM group or how many had spoken to her late that evening. “We have information to a degree, have some good information in terms of her travels, her movements and communications,” he said. “It was important to ‘bottom-out’ that line of inquiry and it is positive in the sense that if we had not gotten to the bottom of that, not questioned the members [of her group], we would not have found out what was said. This is all pieces of the jigsaw puzzle,” Mr Jones said. He indicated that police had gained a closer focus to their inquiry, which had become a criminal probe rather than a missing-persons case. “The more we can narrow this, the better,” he said. “It is safe to say that we are moving down a line of inquiry and it is possible that someone may have abducted Kerran or, let’s face it, killed her. “We are keeping an open mind, but it is glaringly obvious that after three weeks, we have to suspect something criminal has happened,” Mr Jones said, repeating his Friday remarks that police were ”applying the same disciplines to this as a murder investigation.” “In the early days, it is always possible that a missing person has disappeared of their own volition or that, maybe, amnesia has befallen them,” he said. “We have to ask, though: Has she been abducted? Held against her will or, worse, has she been murdered?” He said ”nothing startling or sinister had come out” in interviews with the BBM group, but “we cannot afford to leave any stone unturned”. As police continued to review CCTV footage, await

Canada opposition leader Jack Layton dies during the May federal election by winning official opposition status for the first time in its 50-year history. The party gained 103 seats, up from a previous 37, most of which were won in Quebec. He began the campaign just five weeks after recovering from hip surgery which he said was unrelated to the cancer. He carried a cane throughout. His health became an issue at the start of the campaign, but Layton looked increasingly healthy and energised as the campaign progressed. Layton announced in February that he had been battling prostate

cancer. He said in July that his battle with prostate cancer was going well but recent tests showed he had a new form of cancer. He not did elaborate on what type of cancer was discovered.

TORONTO (AP) — Jack Layton, the leader of Canada’s opposition party, died Monday after a second cancer battle. He was 61. The New Democrat party issued a statement Monday morning, just weeks after a gaunt Layton held a news conference to announce he was fighting a second bout of cancer. The party said Layton died peacefully at 4:45 a.m. ET (0945 GMT) today at his Toronto home, surrounded by family and loved ones. Layton was at the height of his political career after the union-backed party took Canadians by surprise

Libya’s bizarre leader Gadhafi defiant to end TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — In flowing brown Bedouin robes and black beret, hailed as the “king of kings of Africa,” the aging dictator swept up onto the global stage, center front at the United Nations, and delivered an angry, wandering, at times incoherent diatribe against all he detested in the world. In that first and only appearance before the U.N. General Assembly, in 2009, Moammar Gadhafi rambled on about jet lag and swine flu, about the John F. Kennedy assassination and about moving the U.N. to Libya, the vast desert nation he had ruled for four decades with an iron hand.

As dismayed U.N. delegates streamed out of the great domed hall that autumn day, a fuming Gadhafi declared their Security Council “should be called the ‘Terror Council,’” and tore up a copy of the U.N. charter. The bizarre, 96-minute rant by Libya’s “Brother Leader and Guide of the Revolution” may now stand as a fitting denouement to a bizarre life, coming less than two years before Gadhafi’s people rose up against him, before some in that U.N. audience turned their warplanes on him, before lieutenants abandoned him one by one, including the very

General Assembly president, fellow Libyan Ali Treki, who in 2009 glowingly welcomed his “king” to the New York podium.

Mexico’s president becomes TV adventure guide MEXICO CITY (AP) — President Felipe Calderon is figuratively going out on a limb — and literally down a sinkhole, up a river (with a paddle) and over the top of a few pyramids — in an attempt to boost Mexico’s flagging tourism industry. The balding, 49-year-old leader is personally trying to change his country’s violent reputation by appearing as a sort of adventure tour guide in a series of TV programs to be broadcast starting in September on Public Broadcasting Service stations in the United States. The president dons an Indiana to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Jones-style hat and a harness and descends a rope into the 1,000-footdeep (375-meter) Sotano de las Golondrinas cavern, accompanied by Peter Greenberg, host of the “The Royal Tour” TV series. Calderon also straps on scuba tanks to lead Greenberg into a sinkhole lake known as a cenote in Yucatan. And he helps a Lacandon Indian paddle a boat down a river in a jungle in southern Chiapas state. In the 30-minute videos, Calderon breaks from his image as a lawyerly policy wonk best known for launching a bloody, controversial

offensive against drug cartels. He plans to attend a premiere of the show within a few weeks, according to Tourism Department spokesman Roberto Martinez.

OPINIONS

The Editor Speaks Sponsorship Claws Colin Wilson

Another media house has sponsorship deals with some of the quasiGovernment bodies i.e. Pirates Week Festival (The C.I. National Festival) and Cayman Arts Festival. In this deal it precludes Pirates Week and Cayman Arts Festival advertising with any other media house INCLUDING FREE advertising. If this wasn’t enough I, being the co-owner of iNews have been removed, without any prior notice after 28 years, from the executive committee of Pirates Week. I found out only when I asked what was happening this year to be told I could no longer be on the committee because of the sponsorship deal they have with this particular media house. Later that explanation was changed for ‘the need to cut down on the number of persons serving as the committee had too many people and it was becoming unwieldy’. The sponsor represented media and they couldn’t have two people representing media. Having never been on this committee for media, even when I owned CITNCayman 27 this explanation was even more bizarre. I was also told that the people now on the committee were all the different organising chairpersons of the events. As I am the organising chairman (or was) of the children’s writing competition even that explanation didn’t ring true. I had decided not to bring our readerships attention to the Pirates Week sponsorship deal because I have been so much a part of Pirates Week and some of the events were not only my idea but I carried them through including directing, writing and performing in them. I felt uncomfortable about ‘making a fuss.’ Prior to this happening, and again with my long association with the Cayman Drama Society (CDS), I was asked by one of the organisers of a CDS production she was involved in if I could help promote it. I gave three weeks free advertising in colour. When one of my reporters went down to the CDS’s Prospect Playhouse to take photographs, interview members of the cast and production team, he was met with some resistance. One of the cast members was a reporter for this same media house and refused to have his photograph taken nor did he want his name mentioned in iNews. The Arts is very dear to my heart and, if I can promote it, I will give it my all. When I received a communication from the Cayman Arts Festival at the weekend asking my support for a fund-raising event, I answered back with a promise of some free advertising. I did know that this media house was one of the sponsors. I was,

colin.wilson@ieyenews.com

iThought

however, shocked to receive the reply that they were unable to accept because of the sponsorship deal they had with this media house. My sales team has met the same thing with private businesses who have entered into one year exclusive contracts with this same media house that precludes them advertising with a rival newspaper. That is their right. I think the practice is obscene as it stifles competition and is banned from some countries as they say it is unfair. This sort of thing was tried by the major airlines to get rid of the competition. I leave you to judge if you think it is right. However, if you as a company enter into this type of agreement, it is there to try and remove the competition and without competition just see how much you will have to pay when that competition goes away. However, when organisations that are government funded enter into these agreements, it means that the Cayman Islands Government agrees with this practice. The money involved is our money. It comes out of the public purse. I think it is wrong. CITN-Cayman27 (when I was there) sponsored the Children’s Fun Day for Pirates Week and I placed no restrictions on who could promote it. I was pleased for any outside promotion. There were no ‘strings’ attached to the sponsorship. When iNews recently sponsored the two Lisa Carlisle concerts we didn’t enter into exclusive deals with St George’s Anglican Church that we were the only media house that could promote it. In fact the largest portion of paid advertising for the two concerts went to this particular media house and to WestStar TV. I shall be writing next on the story of David and Goliath ……………. and The Trojan Horse....

Number portability row may end up in court Tad Stoner tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

Authorities are studying court action to enforce the overdue 1 July date for telephone companies to launch “number portability“, enabling mobile telephone users to change service providers, but keep their personal number. “That is under consideration,” said Dave Archbold, managing director of the Information and Telecommunications Authority (ICTA). “The deadline remains 1 July and we are not sure what happens now. That is why legal action is under consideration.” If referred to the courts, the dispute could result in a range of penalties encompassing suspension of operating licences and fines as high as $25,000. “We are continuing to work with the operators to get things done. It just has not happened as quickly as we would have liked,” said Frans Vandendries, LIME vice president for legal, regulatory and corporate affairs, and also chairman of the seven - member “Local Number Portability Consortium”, which encompasses main telecommunications operators LIME, Digicel, Telecayman and WestTel. On 1 December last year, after a series of complaints from the telephone companies regarding the complexity of implementing the portability agreement and the problems of creating a database, the ICTA agreed to extend a previous November deadline to start the service to 1 July this year.

iLocal

Despite ongoing lobbying by the operators, however, the ICTA refused to extend the July limit, telling the consortium it had “not identified any substantial or procedural reason” for an extension. The portability scheme operates commonly worldwide, and is often credited with forcing governmentapproved, frequently complacent telecommunications monopolies into sharp competition with newcomers, improving efficiency, innovation and customer service. In the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic has had number portability since September 2009 and Mexico since July 2008, Canada has offered the service since March 2007 and the US since November 2003. Five African nations already boast the scheme. Neither Mr Archbold nor Mr Vandendries were willing to predict when the dispute might be resolved, much less when the Cayman Islands might expect portability, under discussion for at least six years and the frequent cause of bitter dispute. LIME has long opposed the service, while both Digicel and Telecayman supported it in their early stages, but grew to oppose the project after consolidating their own market shares. Arguments have turned on the expense of starting the service, training staff, importing new equipment, corporate secrecy and contracting with a “central reference database”, an independent company to log local telephone numbers and transfer them among operators. As obstacles have been overcome,

• Glitter • Yarn • Fabric Dye • Craft Glue • Acrylic Paint however, resistance has sharpened among companies jealous of their customer base. “The consortium has a vendor for the database, but they are obviously attempting to look after their own individual interests – and the different companies each have different interests,” said one commentator, referring to Dutch database provider Porting XS. “You can slap huge fines on people, and you can go to court, and then there are appeals and appeals of appeals, but no one wants that,” she said. “But suspension of an operating licence is a ‘nuclear option’ in a tactical problem,” she said, “The ICTA just wants o get this thing in place as quickly as possible. “We are continuing to work with the others,” said Mr Vandendries, “but we have all been off for a couple of weeks and I really have no idea when it will get done. “LIME really wants to get it done,” he said, but declined to comment on prospective legal action in the wake of the missed deadline, now more than six weeks past. “I am focused on how to get the job done,” he said.

The Cayman National Cultural Foundation, CNCF, commemorates and showcases the diversity of the Cayman Island’s Heritage and on Friday 12th, the foundation held a free night of fun and dance dubbed Dance Lab. The public were encouraged to join in the with the easy dance steps that got everyone grooving to the same tune. Dance Lab had an easy but strenuous warm up which was followed by a diverse blend of music and dance genres. The dance session was conducted at the Harquail Theatre and the organisers were keen to get everyone involved in the wholesome family fun. African, Caribbean, and Latin American style dance moves were conducted at moderate pace to accommodate all dance and physical fitness levels.

CNCF Managing Director Mrs. Marcia Muttoo said, “Culture Jam is about the sheer elation of discovery during the creative process. It presents an opportunity for artists, young and old, skilled and unskilled, experienced and inexperienced, inhibited and uninhibited to come together and share their creativity in a free, non-judgmental and uncompetitive atmosphere.” CNCF Artistic Director Mr. Henry Muttoo was in attendance, as well as, actress and CNCF Programmes Manager, Rita Estevanovich. The evening’s dance session was lead by Mrs. Lorna Reid who is a dance instructor, choreographer, Artistic Director and Founder of the Cayman Islands National Dance Company, Dance Unlimited. Culture Jam also includes a poetry segment, where local and aspiring writers can share their literature with a live listening audience through a

Walrus herds gather on Alaska’s northwest shore ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Large herds of Pacific walrus have begun gathering on the northwest coast of Alaska, again forsaking sea ice for sand in what has become a symbol of climate warming in the region. A contractor taking part in federal marine mammal aerial surveys over the Chukchi Sea spotted about 5,000 walruses Wednesday on a beach north of Point Lay. A second herd of 3,000 walruses rested a short distance away. In winter, Pacific walruses are found at the edge of sea ice in the Bering Sea. Older males remain in the Bering Sea for the summer, but mothers and their young ride the edge of sea ice as it melts north through the Bering Strait and into the Chukchi Sea. Female walruses and their young have come ashore during late summer and fall in four of the last five years on Alaska’s northwest coast. The phenomenon began after sea ice melted far beyond the relatively shallow continental shelf to waters of the deep Arctic Basin. Walrus can dive to 600 feet to find clams, snails and other food on the ocean bottom. Water beyond the continental shelf can be 10,000 feet or more. In 2007, several thousand walruses gathered on Alaska’s northwest shore for the first time. They returned in 2009, and last year gathered in unprecedented numbers. Upward of 20,000 animals were counted near Point Lay, an Eskimo village 300 miles

southwest of Barrow and 700 miles northwest of Anchorage. Walrus face danger from stampedes when they gather on shore. More than 130 mostly young walruses were crushed in September 2009 at Alaska’s Icy Cape in a disturbance that could have been caused by a polar bear, human hunters or an airplane. “Walrus are sensitive to human activity and to machine activity,” said U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spokesman Bruce Woods. The agency has already issued alerts to pilots and coastal communities asking that airplanes stay at least 1,500 feet above herds and a halfmile away if it’s safe. Likewise, hunters in boats have been asked to stay a half-mile away to avoid spooking walrus herds. Woods said the herds could continue to grow. Sea ice in Arctic waters generally melts through

mid- to late September. “We could see bigger concentrations,” he said. The walruses were spotted by a COMIDA flight, which stands for Chukchi Offshore Monitoring in Drilling Area. The aerial surveys are funded by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement, which oversees offshore petroleum drilling, and coordinated by the National Marine Mammals Laboratory. A 2008 sale sold 2.76 million acres in leases of Chukchi Sea ocean bottom and Shell Oil hopes to drill during the open water season next summer. U.S. Geological Survey scientists plan to be in Point Lay next week to tag 35 walruses with satellite radio tags that will monitor foraging activity from shore. The tracking project is part of a study on how walruses respond to reduced sea ice. info@ieyenews.com

Toastmasters tackle Glossophobia Christopher Tobutt christopher.tobutt@ieyenews.com

“The Journey is the Reward” What if you could choose who to be despite your circumstances?

The Grand Cayman Toastmasters Club meets on Thursday nights at the Chamber of Commerce offices in Governor’s Square. It aims to train members in all the skills associated with public speaking.

Advanced Toastmaster Annick Jackman introduced the evening’s activities – a series of speeches from members, followed by a process of assessment and critiquing by other members – by reminding members of the club motto: “For better listening, better thinking, and better speaking.”

The “Word of the Day,” was “Obsession,” and Toastmaster Kimberly Parker told a funny story about a dive trip with Carson, an unusual friend with a very unusual obsession. Carson caused a buzz among the rest of very-masculine diving friends when he appeared out of the water with blue toenails, exclaiming, “‘What other colour would be appropriate for a scuba diving vacation?’” Ms. Parker said. Later, when Carson and Kimberly were alone, there was another revelation when Kimberly’s new dive buddy told her that he was obsessed about his other life – posing as “Heather the Mermaid,” complete with tail and long blonde wig. Toastmaster Anna Clarke was next, speaking on the topic of indoor air pollutants that, according to the USA’s Environmental Protection Agency, had been found to be several times higher than the levels outside. Shoe soles were a source of indoor pollutants, she said, as they carried all kinds of bacteria and mold spores into the home. Toastmaster Abraham Matthew

Also, it was typically those gifted with good public speaking and communication skills who typically got promoted above those who had good technical skills, he said, and that was a very practical reason to attend the Toastmasters club. Toastmaster Jackie Morris presented the next section, during which Toastmaster members were

picked to speak on a surprise topic without any chance of preparation, something that most people were particularly scared of. But Ms. Morris had some sound advice: “Do the thing you fear most and the death of fear is certain,” she said, quoting from Mark Twain. Miss Cayman contestant, Samantha Widmer was asked to speak on the topic, “What aspect of your personality would allow you to survive a catastrophe?”

Toastmaster Abraham Matthew

“If I was faced with a catastrophe, such as an earthquake, I would encourage those around me to be hopeful, and to think about the future,” she said. Toastmaster Noel Wallace was asked, “What is the biggest lie you’ve ever told?” He answered by saying that people might be disturbed that, as “a man of the cloth, he had told a big lie, and then went on to describe many different aspects of Italian culture instead.

The competition in the social media and internet communications market is heating up as Facebook implements video calling, powered by Skype, in response to Google’s release of Google+. Facebook, the social media giant who has 750 million active users sharing 4 billion items every day, was pressed to release a video calling feature. By Facebook collaborating with Skype and their 170 million users, together they can tackle their competition Google, ensure Facebook users are engaged, and open up new market opportunities for Skype. According to feedback, potential Skype users are most commonly deterred by the requirement to set up an account in order to avail of the service. In response, Facebook has linked Skype directly into the website and by simply clicking a button you can place a call. They emphasize that you do not need to create an account, just download a video plug-in the first time you place a call and after that, you can be connected with friends via video calling. Initially, Facebook’s voice calls will be limited to one-to-one which is lagging behind Google+ which has the capability for video conferencing for up to 10 people. On the other hand, Google+ is currently only available on an invitation basis which could hurt its potential. Both of these competitors are working hard to secure their place in the market and release the latest and greatest features.

Dishin’ with Dody Gulf Coast cooking - II We will continue today with the saga of Corpus Christi. In the last column I had “run away” to the beach. Sometimes you just need to get away from everybody and everything. One of my pet peeves is rude customer service representatives…people who are in the business of dealing with people and obviously hate their job… and people. It seems to be the norm these days, that customer service is a thing of the past. So when I had an extremely pleasant experience at Water Street Food Company in Corpus I had to comment. Joyce and I went to the restaurant for lunch. We were first greeted at our table by our waiter Issac. He was friendly, efficient and exceedingly knowledgeable about the menu. When I asked specific questions, he knew the answers so well that I asked him to choose my entrée. It was perfection. I was presented with Mesquite Grilled Yellow Fin Tuna with wasabi vinaigrette. (Makes my mouth water just to type the name!) During our meal, the manager, Audi, greeted each customer asking if there

was any need. With us, there was not. However, the moment that was “over and beyond the call of duty” came from Jessica. I had left the restaurant and asked a woman in the parking lot where I could buy ice. She answered me and we parted. Jessica, whose name I was to find out later, asked if

Preheat the grill. In a large bowl, whisk together the marinade. Add the shrimp and vegetables. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for 20 minutes. Skewer the shrimp and vegetables. Place on grill, turning once until the vegetables are tender and the shrimp opaque, about 3 minutes per side.

the other lady had been able to help me. I answered that she had. Then she asked if I needed anything else, offering to fill my glass with ice and water. I responded by questioning if she knew where the tourist center was. I knew it was near, but not certain where. She then went back to the restaurant, looked the information up online and brought me the answer. I was stunned and extremely appreciative. Thank you, I will return. Joyce and I ended our last day together by visiting the docks and buying several pounds of shrimp. There is something almost primal about selecting your seafood from a boat that just returned from a day of fishing or shrimping. The salt air, sea worn boats, tanned and leathery captains, seagulls crying overhead anticipating the daily leavings, all add to the experience. For those that live on the water, this is an everyday occurrence, but for us inlanders it is a joy. Neither of us cooked during our visit, but I did begin creating new recipes. Last column I gave you the incredible tartar sauce recipe. Today I want to showcase the amazing Gulf shrimp. Of course, any shrimp available will work for the kebobs. I am certain you will enjoy this creation.

“Exiled Frenchmen in a sauceless land”

Part 29

When they had turned this point, and there was nothing on the shore side save wild cliffs crowned with evergreens, then before them rose a low island with its bare summer trees, its one weather-beaten house, a straight line of smoke coming from its chimney. It was still a mile distant, but the boys ran along with new vigor. No one wished to ride; André, leaving his place, took hold with the others, and the empty sled went on toward the hermitage at a fine pace. “You could repose yourself there, mademoiselle,” said Antoine, who never thoroughly approved the walking upon her own two feet kept up—nay, even enjoyed—by this vigorous girl at his side. Tita’s ideas were more to his mind. “But I like it,” said Anne, smiling. “It makes me feel warm and strong, all awake and joyous, as though I had just heard some delightful news.” “But the delightful news in reality, mademoiselle—one hears not much of it up here, as I say to Jacqueline.” “Look at the sky, the ice-fields; that is news every day, newly beautiful, if we will only look at it.” “Does mademoiselle think, then, that the ice is beautiful?” “Very beautiful,” replied the girl. The cold air had brought the blood to her cheeks, a gleaming light to her strong, fearless eyes that looked the sun in the face without quailing. Old Antoine caught the idea for the first time that she might, perhaps, be beautiful some day, and that night, before his fire, he repeated the idea to his wife. “Bah!” Said old Jacqueline; “that is one great error of yours, my friend. Have you turned blind?” “I did not mean beautiful in my eyes, of course; but one kind of beauty pleases me, thank the saints, and that is, without doubt, your own,” replied the Frenchman, bowing toward his withered, brighteyed old spouse with courtly gravity. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

“But men of another race, now, like those who come here in the summer, might they not think her passable?” But old Jacqueline, although mollified, would not admit even this. A good young lady, and kind, it was to be hoped she would be content with the graces of piety, since she had not those of the other sort. Religion was all merciful. The low island met the lake without any broken ice at its edge; it rose slightly from the beach in a gentle slope, the snow-path leading directly up to the house door. The sound of the bells brought Père Michaux himself to the entrance. “Enter, then, my children,” he said; “and you, Antoine, take the dogs round to the kitchen. Pierre is there.” Pierre was a French cook. Neither conscience nor congregation requiring that Père Michaux should nourish his inner man with half-baked or cindered dishes, he enjoyed to the full the skill and affection of this small-sized old Frenchman, who, while learning in his youth the rules, exceptions, and sauces of his profession, became the victim of black melancholy on account of a certain Denise, fair but cold-hearted, who, being employed in a conservatory, should have been

warmer. Perhaps Denise had her inner fires, but they emitted no gleam toward poor Pierre; and at last, after spoiling two breakfasts and a dinner, and drawing down upon himself the epithet of “imbecilic,” the sallow little apprentice abandoned Paris, and in a fit of despair took passage for America, very much as he might have taken passage for Hades via the charcoal route. Having arrived in New York, instead of seeking a place where his knowledge would have been prized by exiled Frenchmen in a sauceless land, the despairing, obstinate little cook allowed himself to drift into all sorts of incongruous situations, and at last enlisted in the United States army, where, as he could play the flute, he was speedily placed in special service as member of the band. Poor Pierre! His flute sang to him only “Denise! Denise!” But the bandmaster thought it could sing other tunes as well, and set him to work with the score before him. It was while miserably performing his part in company with six placid Germans that Père Michaux first saw poor Pierre, and recognizing a compatriot, spoke to him. Struck by the pathetic misery of his face, he asked a few questions of the little flute-player, listened to his story, and gave him the comfort and help of sympathy and shillings. When the time of enlistment expired, Pierre came westward after his priest: Père Michaux had written to him once or twice, and the excook had preserved the letters as a guidebook. He showed the heading and the postmark whenever he was at a loss, and travelled blindly on, handed from one railway conductor to another like a piece of animated luggage, until at last he was put on board of a steamer, and, with some difficulty, carried westward; for the sight of the water had convinced him that he was to be taken on some unknown and terrible voyage.

The Martial Arts experience “Do I have the potential to become a black belt?” Georgina Wilcox georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com

Martial arts embrace all of the various extensive systems of training for combat, including self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, as well as mental and spiritual development. Whilst I like watching martial arts, in particular karate, which is really catching on here in the Cayman Islands, would I like to actually do it myself? Former British Champion Master Jim Wilson has all the answers in his DVD “Beginners Guide to Karate”. This is what I learnt from it and if you like what you read I urge you to buy a copy of the video. It’s much more than a beginner’s guide … it’s a full explanation of basic technique performance. If you have self-doubt it’s not a bad thing. It’s a way for you to take a step back from your training and logically ask yourself if karate is still for you. Only you can answer this question but to make sure that you continue to give karate a chance I recommend that you focus on three things: why did you get started in the first place; what has karate done for you so far; and what do you still hope to get out of your karate practice? If you answer ‘yes’ then continue reading. Do I have the potential to become a black belt? Yes you do. Everybody has the potential to do anything they want. The question you should ask yourself is, “Will I allow myself to reach my potential of becoming a black belt?” Can Karate really help me to defend myself? Yes and no. After three months of training the chances are that you will not be able to defend yourself unless you are taking a specific and intensive self-defense course that is solely focused on street survival. You are probably taking a mainstream martial arts class in which case you should expect to gradually develop self-defense skills over a significantly longer period of time. If your primary goal is self-defense then take a course to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

All day Breakfast & Lunch that deals with that specifically and also read and learn about basic awareness tactics for going about your everyday life. Is all of this talk about ethics and spiritual values really true? At first it seems as if punching and kicking don’t really match the values of discipline and respect. I can’t blame you for thinking that especially after picking up your daily copy of iNews and reading about the latest mugging, robbery and most at the point of a gun. However the fact of the matter is that self-awareness leads to a greater appreciation of truth in your life and what it means to you specifically. By practicing martial arts you learn about your own strengths and weaknesses and through hard physical training you learn how to break through previous limitations and take yourself to the next level in your growth and self-discovery. This usually translates into higher moral and spiritual values that in turn lead to greater self-discipline and respect for our fellow citizens. I believe that all of this is true but it obviously takes time, effort and commitment to make any kind of lasting behavioral change. Will I ever get these techniques and drills right? The more you practice, the more likely you are to get the techniques and drills right. Your ultimate success in karate is in direct proportion to your effort,

focus and persistence. The more that you focus on the fact that you are not getting the drills right, the more you will become frustrated. Change your focus, keep it positive, and suddenly you will get the techniques right. Doesn’t everyone get hurt in sparring? Everybody gets minor bumps and bruises in sparring even if when are wearing protective gear. This is part of martial arts training. Don’t believe anybody who tells you differently. However, very few practitioners experience serious injuries while training at a reputable school that takes every precaution necessary for the safety of its members. The use of safety gear is one reason for this, but a more important reason is the care and knowledge of a competent instructor who knows how to gradually introduce sparring drills that are both age-appropriate and rank-specific. A competent and caring instructor is more important than any piece of safety gear. Many of us have drunk a mug of coffee during the quiet moments of our day. We drink it to jolt our systems when our system is falling asleep and we still need to work. Once upon a time, an Arabian shepherd named Kaldi found his goats dancing joyously around a dark green leafed shrub with bright red cherries in the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula. Kaldi soon determined that it was the bright red cherries on the shrub that were causing the peculiar euphoria and after trying the cherries himself, he learned of their powerful effect. Monks at a local monastery learnt of this and exploited it to stay awake during extended hours of prayer. They distributed it to other monasteries around the world. Well, so legend has it. It is now acknowledged that the first coffee plants came from Ethiopia and ended up in the Yemen where it was cultivated since the 6th century. In Cairo and Mecca coffee is now a passion and not just a stimulant. Thanks to the varying tastes of people, many delicious blends have resulted and not just from Arabia. Coffee is now grown all over the world and each area produces coffee that is unique to the soil it grows in. These are the main countries: Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republix, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Malawi, Mexico, Nicaragua, Papua New Guinea, Tanzania, Uganda, Venezuela, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Coffee is a complex drink that is drunk at any time during the day. It is enjoyed by many millions. There are so many varieties and blends that it can be bewildering. As the character Tom Hanks played in “You’ve Got Mail” said, “It is a challenge to choose (coffee) for those, who have difficulty making decisions, to go into a Starbucks shop, because

Coffee is like wine. To truly appreciate it you need to use all your senses and savour not only the taste of each brew but its aroma as well. The scent alone of coffee is enough for some of us to relax. Coffee reminds us of home or a place to just hang out, kick back and relax even if you are sitting in the middle of a crowded cafe, or worse still, taking a coffee break at WORK! Learning how to make great coffee at home instead of always buying from the local cafe is actually more rewarding. There are many Internet blogs that give practical tips on how to make coffee. I find them invaluable. For various coffee recipes, be it brew or food flavoured with this delicious ingredient, add an interesting and helpful touch. It’s always nice to work with recipes that other people have already

found to be successful. I have also found that a really good website is www.coffeeresearch.org. Founded in 1999, CoffeeResearch.org was the first Web site dedicated to coffee education with comprehensive coverage on all aspects of coffee. The research on their site is the culmination of a year of travel studying coffee with the foremost experts around the world. These are the general rules they recommend to make a good mug of coffee. Coffee should be brewed for 4.5-5 minutes using a ratio of 55 grams of ground coffee per litre of filtered water (195-205°F). It is convenient to use 2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 ounces of filtered water. Filtered water and spring water are recommended. Tap water imparts off flavours to the coffee and some minerals are essential to coffee flavour. Distilled water is not recommended for brewing coffee as it lacks the minerals to bring out the natural flavours of the coffee. There is much to experience about coffee and many people to enjoy it. APPLY SUNSCREEN PROPERLY.

The end of the school year is here and savvy moms and dads by now have made all the arrangements for summer. Summer camps and leisurely days at the pool or beach are just a few of the summer rituals for many families. However if you're tempted to let your child play outdoors for even a few minutes without proper sun protection, you might want to think twice. Adolescence and childhood are critical periods during which exposure to UV radiation is more likely to contribute to skin cancer in later life. Children with fair skin, blond or red hair and blue or green eyes are at the highest risk of sunburn. But darker-skinned children also need sun protection. With this in mind, it’s important that parents teach their children how to enjoy fun in the sun safely.

LIMIT OUTDOOR PLAYTIME BETWEEN 10A.M. AND 4P.M.

Apply a thick, even coat to all exposed areas 20 - 30 minutes before your child goes out in the sun. Choose a sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher. Make sure it's labeled "broad spectrum," which means it blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight. For your little ones, sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide should be selected as these compounds are less irritating than others. Sunscreen sticks are best for the face because they are sweat proof and less likely to drip. Don't forget nose, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck; lips can also burn, so apply a lip balm with SPF protection. Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours, or after sweating or swimming.

COVER FROM HEAD TO TOE. Wearing protective clothing and hats is one of the primary ways of warding off UV damage. When wet, light coloured clothing transmits just as much sunlight as bare skin. Keep your kids covered with dark colours, long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. And don't forget the accessories: sunglasses with UV protection to guard against burned corneas, and hats to prevent sunburned scalps and faces. Protective clothing, hats with wide brims, and sunglasses are just as important for babies. At the beach, bring along a large umbrella.

Parents, you are the best teacher by practicing sun safety yourself. If your child sees you following sun safety rules, he'll take them for granted and follow suit. Teach every member of the family how to protect their skin and eyes. With proper supervision, children can learn to protect themselves and enjoy summer fun without sacrificing the health of their skin.

Avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun's rays are at their strongest. Even on cloudy or cooler days, ultraviolet (UV) rays remain strong. Shady spots can be just as tricky because of reflected light. If your child is playing outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply ample sunscreen.

WATCH OUT FOR MEDICATIONS. Some medications increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, so make sure to ask your doctor whether your child may be at risk. Prescription antibiotics and acne medications are the most notorious culprits, but when in doubt, ask.

In the 1980s Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI scans astounded the medical society by not just taking an image of the brain itself, but by concentrating on water molecules, as an alternative to imaging the degree to which the various parts of the head absorb x-rays. MRIs represent the speed at which rotating hydrogen atoms of water molecules inside various parts of the brain either line up or fall out of arrangement with a powerful magnetic field. These different values of de-magnetisation or magnetisation are inputted into a computer. Slice like images are formed in a sequence and

put on view on the screen or x-ray type film in hues of grey. Irregular compositions, like brain tumors or the signs of multiple sclerosis, are shown in their own hues of grey and are also identifiable by their contours and positions. The patient lies flat on a plane table that moves into and out of a hole in the scanner that looks a lot like an oversize doughnut hole. The hole is narrow, so patients suffering from claustrophobia have to notify their doctors if this might be a hitch. A loud noise is produced every time the radio frequency coils are turned off and on. A technologist may need to inject a needle in the patient’s vein to dispense a distinct substance. A situation in which MRIs are basically not done is when the patient has a heart pacemaker. The machine’s magnet may disturb the pacemaker and stop the heart. An MRI is also avoided when the patient is gravely ill.

So far, it has worked every time it has mattered most. Ever since his stunning world records and gold medals in the 100 and 200 meters at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and his repeat at the 2009 Berlin World Championships, the Jamaican sprinter has become a global sports superstar. So when the championships open Saturday, most of the attention will focus on Bolt. Not that he minds. As usual, he is already making light of the pressure and expectations. “I am always confident. I am unbeaten this year and aim to defend all my titles in Daegu,” Bolt told The Associated Press in an email. On top of his individual gold medals, he also helped Jamaica win titles in the sprint relays at Beijing and Berlin. Anything less than nine gold medals from Beijing and two world championships would be a disappointment for him ahead of the 2012 London Olympics. Yet he needs another overpowering show at the 53,000-capacity Daegu Stadium, because his statistics over the past two years have not completely matched his braggadocio.

Investigators Sunday looked for suspects and interviewed witnesses to the violence the night before in the parking lot at Candlestick Park after the matchup. Motives for the shootings - including whether they were influenced by emotions surrounding a game involving fiercely rival teams weren’t known. But the shootings evoked memories of another recent disturbing act of post-game violence involving two rival California pro sports teams — the near-fatal beating this spring of a San Francisco Giants fan outside Dodger Stadium. In Saturday’s attacks, a 24-year-old man, who reportedly was wearing a “F-- the Niners” T-shirt, was shot several times in the stomach. Police said he managed to stumble to stadium security for help despite the severe injuries. He remained hospitalised in serious condition Sunday. A second victim, a 20-yearold man, was treated for less serious wounds in a separate shooting, also after the game. Sgt. Mike Andraychak said no arrests have been made and that police are looking for “a person of interest” connected to at least one of the shootings. He would not specify which shooting.

iSports Chelsea agree Mata deal Chelsea have agreed a fee with Spanish club Valencia to sign Juan Mata for a reported £23.5m. Yesterday, the 23-year-old winger announced on Twitter that he was on his way to Stamford Bridge for a medical. Mata tweeted: “Travel to London for medical examination, and come back to Valencia to say goodbye to everybody as you deserve... thanks so much.”

The Stamford Bridge club said the deal was subject to Mata agreeing personal terms and passing a medical. “An agreement has been reached with Valencia for the transfer of midfielder Juan Manuel Mata,” said a statement on theChelsea website. Valencia had confirmed the deal themselves on Sunday. No fee has been officially disclosed but reports in Spain suggest the Blues are paying £23.5m. After Chelsea’s 2-1 win over West Brom, boss Andre VillasBoas said: “He can add to any squad in the world.” Mata has been at Valencia since 2007 and as captain helped Spain win the Under-21 European Championship in the summer. He was also part of Spain’s 2010 World Cup winning squad. Villas-Boas has previously spoken of the need to recruit more midfielders and the club have also made bids for Tottenham’s Luka Modric. Elsewhere Liverpool comfortably defeated a weak Arsenal side 2-0, while Manchester City beat Bolton 3-2.

Cayman’s U-15 cricketers are off to the Bahamas

The squad of 14 boys is looking forward to the valuable experience they will gain from playing in the four-match tour

Kevin Creary kevin.creary@ieyenews.com

The Cayman Islands National U-15 Cricket team is in Nassau Bahamas on an all-important fourmatch tour. The squad of 14 boys will be accompanied by a delegation of Caymanian cricket officials and coaches. The main goal of the trip is to provide the young players with valuable experience for future competitions. The team will be led by one of Cayman’s talented young hopefuls,

Captain Gregory Davis, who will be supported by Vice Captain, Paul Laidlaw. Throughout the tour, the players will be assessed by their coaches, after which areas requiring improvement will be appropriately addressed. The test matches will run from the 20th - 27th of August, 2011. Cayman Islands youth coaches, Andy Myles and Benjamin Maynard are preparing the youngsters for their four match tour. Technical Director for the Cayman Islands Cricket Association, Veteran West Indian

Cricketer, Theodore “Theo” Cuffy is elated about the benefits he hopes the team will receive from the overseas assignment. Speaking with iNews at the Owen Roberts International Airport just before the teams departure, Mr. Cuffy said, “This is a developmental tour, everybody likes to win but that is not the most important thing now. Hopefully this strategic plan will lead these players straight through to the National Senior Team.” The matches will be played Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
