West Bay’s Jordan Manderson and a companion were arrested yesterday in connection with the 13 September murder of Robert Bush, a crime that sparked a nine-day series of tit-for-tat gangland killings. Thursday morning, police executed a 20th January warrant on Manderson, at his 27 Cinder Lane home in West Bay, suspected in the September killing as Bush, 28, sat in his car at the junction of Birch Tree Hill Road and Captains Joe and Osbert Road. Police arrested Manderson, 18, along with a 17-year-old companion, on suspicion of conspiracy to murder and possession of an illegal firearm. Police searched six homes during the operation, seizing ammunition and arresting a third man for threatening violence and a woman for possession of ganja.

Smiling faces could be seen everywhere as visitors to the 45th Agriculture Show at Lower Valley took home armfuls of fresh produce, or potted plants such as scotch bonnet peppers, huge vines of tomatoes, and herbs of all kinds back to their cars. There was plenty for everyone – young and old, to see and buy, from stalls, beautiful bright yellow and orange squashes, melons and bananas and baby fruit trees to the very best of Cayman’s cattle, pigs, goats and poultry. There were horses too - and a reallive cowboy rodeo, courtesy of Cayman Wranglers Association Deputy Premier Hon. Mrs. Julianna O’Connor-Connolly, Minister for District Administration, Works, Lands and Agriculture, said: “This event is a timely reminder of our connection to the land and to each other through food and our heritage.” H.E. The Governor, Mr. Duncan Taylor said: “This is an event which I look forward to enormously each

Handicraft stalls featured traditional crafts - such as silver-
thatch work, needle and crotchet work, and marvelous things made from shells, including a series of amazing sculptures made from the pink lining of conch shells by Luelan Bodden. The District Stall section was filled with colourful fruits and vegetable from each district (including Cayman Brac). Bodden Town had a “map” of all three Cayman Islands, each one filled with the most colourful peppers you’ve ever seen.
“I am not a cancer patient but I have been attending the Cancer Society’s Survivor Dinners over the years with my wife. I appreciate how the Cayman Islands Cancer Society’s staff care for my wife who is a cancer survivor. I have a lot of respect for those people because they treat everyone with respect. Continued from front page The September killing was the first of five related gangland-style executions that saw the death of Andrew Baptist, Preston Rivers and Jason Christian during a nine-day period, until 23 September. Christian’s companion at the time of his 19 September death, Keith Montique, survived the 10-shot execution. Days later, East End’s Asher McGaw was also killed. While police have never affiliated the shooting to West Bay’s Birch Tree Hill-Logwoods Don war of attrition, McGaw’s death is thought to be linked to the attacks. Addressing “Detective Sergeant Dave Morrison and other officers”, according to the warrant signed by Justice of the Peace Louis Ebanks, ”I am satisfied by information on oath that there is reasonable suspicion of the commission of the offence, and it has been made to appear to me that the production of the following articles is/are essential to the enquiry into the said offence.” The warrant seeks seizure of a firearm, clothing, electronic devices and “any other item associated with this offence” or “any document/ device, vehicle owned, rented or leased and reduces [sic] into the control of

Jordan Manderson.” The warrant requires officers to “take possession of the said articles and produce the same forthwith before a court, returning this evidence with an endorsement certifying the manner of its execution.” On 21 June last year, Manderson was acquitted in a judge-alone trial of the 11 March, 2010 shooting death of Marcos Duran in West Bay as part of an attempted robbery. While Manderson admitted to being at the scene, he was released for lack of evidence. Manderson’s older brother, Justin, was acquitted on 19 January this year in another judge-alone trial, citing insufficient evidence, in the 24 June, 2010 attempted murder and
wounding of West Bay’s Andy Barnes. Meanwhile, police on Wednesday arrested a man in connection with two 3:00am shootings at Club 7 near the Grand Pavilion on West Bay Road. A brief RCIPS report said two male victims had “received gunshot wounds in an incident “which occurred just after 3am“ at Club 7. Both men, police said, “were transported to George Town Hospital”, where they remain “undergoing treatment for injuries”. “Police can confirm that a firearm was recovered at the scene, and that one male person has been arrested,” the report said. “Enquiries are ongoing and updates will be provided once more information is available.
Club 7 nightclub double shootings Two men shot outside a nightclub in West Bay Road have been released from hospital. The pair suffered gunshot wounds in the early hours of Wednesday morning just outside Club 7 near Grand Pavillion. One man was arrested at the scene and detectives say a firearm, thought to be a handgun, was also recovered. In December a 36 year old man was stabbed inside the same venue. One person was arrested. The incidents are understood not to be related. A spokesman for the RCIPS said: “Police are
seeking the assistance of any persons who may have been present at the club and who may have witnessed the incident. “Police can confirm that a firearm was recovered at the scene, and that one male person has been arrested in relation to the incident. “Anyone with information is asked to call RCIPS Tip-Line on 949-7777 “Persons wishing to provide information but would like to remain anonymous are asked to use Crime Stoppers.” Detectives say inquiries are continuing.

Cayman celebrated Mardi Gras in style on Wednesday at two different locations with plenty of brightlycoloured beads, and enough booze for everyone to get into the party spirit. With loud music and lots of sexy dancing - onstage at least (the rest
of the crowd seemed a little more conservative) - to attract them, the George Town Waterfront opposite Margaritaville was filled with thousands of revellers from six cruise ships, all getting a great taste of local culture. At the other location, The Kaibo Restaurant, unlike the George Town party, was enclosed in a
metal fence and was strictly for those willing to buy tickets. With a bus to take partygoers the last stretch of the road between Rum Point and the Kaibo beach and back again, a very-well organised Mardi Gras party was the order of the day at the Kaibo Restaurant in North Side. It was 12 hours of non-stop
partying beginning at mid-day, with some great dance sounds and best DJs, plenty of colour and plenty of fun all round. People loved jumping to catch beads being thrown from the balcony. With a slightly Alice in Wonderland flavour, there was a mad hatter there attracting the attention of cameras – and ladies too.

University College to host Shetty training

Cayman’s University College will host the inaugural training programmes for Dr Devi Shetty’s Narayana Medical College, scheduled for an August groundbreaking, while the nursing school is likely to begin in September. The training programmes are intended as a kind of head start to the opening of the Narayana medical school in later phases of the two-year building project, but will launch the effort to train and licence nurses. Speaking to a crowd of at least 100 at a Tuesday-night courthouse rally, Premier McKeeva Bush announced the UCCI programme, saying planning approvals for the initial 140-bed phase of the 15-year, $2 billion project -- to encompass a 2,000-bed specialtycare hospital, assisted-living centre, research facilities and guest quarters - were expected soon. “The Shetty hospital will enable us to do things right here that we could not do before. The first phase will be built on 50 acres, and the planning and parcel numbers will be issued in the coming weeks. Planning approval will be in the next three months” Mr Bush said. “We need a proper and improved training programme for nurses, and this will be done through UCCI.” In early January, Dr Shetty, local project director Gene Thompson and Narayana CEO Dr A Raghuvanshi said the medical school would begin “just after” the August groundbreaking, “with an intake of 100 students toward the end of the year, in cooperation with a local school while construction is under way at the Narayana centre.” While never identified, UCCI had been rumoured as the “local institution”, Mr Bush’s Tuesday to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

remarks were the first formal indication the school would be the venue for the inaugural training courses. Mr Bush said phase one would be complete in 12 months, employing 300 on site to start, expanding to 450 within two years. In other remarks, Mr Bush rejected opposition claims he had misled the public about closure of 2,500 feet of West Bay Road, enabling redevelopment of the old Marriott Courtyard Hotel, set to start, he said, in one year. “I want to clear up the obstructions and misconceptions. No one is being misled. The length of road to be closed is between Coutts and Yacht Club Drive, and that is still 2,500 feet that will be closed to vehicular traffic.” Alternate measurements putting the length at 3,731 feet and 4,290 feet formed part of the beachfront properties north of Tiki Beach, he said, but the public would have full access to them. “You can still walk and cycle across that, you just can’t drive your car. The existing public beach will be extended to give better public amenities, a walking track and a better beach. We are not giving it away. “No one can be stopped from using the beach, from bathing or from walking,” he said, suggesting the 2,500 feet of closure, re-routed onto the four-lane Esterley Tibbetts Highway extension, was only 10.5% of the 26,287 feet to the four-way stop in West Bay. “And that’s what they want to go to London about?” he asked, alluding to the early-March UK visit to opposition and government officials by North Side independent MLA Ezzard Miller, East End PPM MLA Arden McLean
and West Bay activist Alice Mae Coe. Accusing “the imposter captain”, Bryan Ebanks and “make-believe lion” Paul Rivers, both from West Bay, Mr Miller, Mr McLean and PPM leader Alden McLaughlin of irresponsibility, he said they were damaging the entire Cayman Islands. “There are genuine concerns, and I am trying to improve things, but this reckless speech is doing more and more damage to the country. These are cave-people, citizens who oppose virtually everything. It’s pure unadulterated harassment.” He detailed the benefits from the Dartgovernment ForCayman Investment Alliance, saying the $1.5 billion, 30-year programme of social, community and infrastructure development was in the best interests of the country and that construction of the George Town port would provide employment and fresh business opportunities. Finally, rejecting nascent corruption charges -- and the dual police-governor probe -- against him, Mr Bush declared himself unafraid, saying “the old fire” had been rekindled and he was reconsidering the retirement he had previously proposed. “I am not scared of anyone, whether in the governor’s office or anywhere else. This economy is turning around, I said I was tired, that I had lost the fight when I lost my daughter, and I said I wanted young people to come up and that I could not be here forever. Maybe I needed some sympathy, but I never said I was not going to run. Now, having heard the opposition, he said “I am not going. I am not prepared to go. I am the premier, I am the leader and woe to this country if they elect Mr Mclean, Mr McLaughlin. Mr Miller or Mr Ebanks.”

Avalanches hit Indian Kashmir; 16 soldiers killed Indian troops are stationed along this de-facto border. Both avalanches took place late Wednesday night, and state officials warned more may occur in mountain areas. Rescue workers in Dawar pulled out 13 survivors who were being treated at a local army hospital, Grewal said. Three soldiers there were still believed to be trapped under the snow, he said. SRINAGAR, India (AP) — Two massive avalanches in snowbound regions of Indian-controlled Kashmir killed at least 16 soldiers, and at least three others were feared trapped in a military camp that was partially buried under snow, an official said Thursday. Col. K.S. Grewal said three of the soldiers were killed in the mountainous area of Sonamarg and 13 were killed at a large army camp in Dawar, a town close to the heavily militarized cease-fire line that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan. Hundreds of thousands of
rains block road links to the region. Army rescue teams from other parts of the region were trying to reach the Dawar army camp but were delayed by heavy fog, snow and cloud cover, Grewal said. Experts say Wright’s collection, which included 44 of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide’s top 100 issues from comics’ golden age, was remarkable for its number of rare issues, but also because it was compiled by a single person in childhood who kept it in good condition until his death in 1994 at age 66. “This really has its place in the history of great comic book collections,” said Lon Allen, the
DALLAS (AP) — Billy Wright plunked down dime after dime for comic books while growing up in the late 1930s and early 1940s, caring for the collection he started around the age of 9 until his death more than half a century later. On Wednesday, most of that collection sold for a whopping $3.5 million. Wright’s 345 comics, nearly all of which were published from 1936 through 1941, included many of the most prized issues ever, including Detective Comics No. 27, which features the debut of Batman,

The copy of Detective Comics No. 27, from 1939, drew the highest bid Wednesday, selling for $523,000, including a buyer’s premium, Allen said. Shelling kills 2 Western journalists in Syria BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian gunners pounded an opposition stronghold where the last dispatches from a veteran American-born war correspondent chronicled the suffering of civilians caught in the relentless shelling. An intense morning barrage killed her and a French photojournalist — two of 74 deaths reported Wednesday in Syria. “I watched a little baby die today,” Marie Colvin told the BBC from the embattled city of Homs on Tuesday in one of her final reports. “Absolutely horrific, a 2-year old child had been hit,” added Colvin,
who worked for Britain’s Sunday Times. “They stripped it and found the shrapnel had gone into the left chest and the doctor said, ‘I can’t do anything.’ His little tummy just kept heaving until he died.” Colvin and photographer Remi Ochlik were among a group of journalists who had crossed into Syria and were sharing accommodations with activists, raising speculation that government forces targeted the makeshift media center, although opposition groups had previously described the shelling as indiscriminate. At least two other Western journalists were wounded.

Hundreds of people have died in weeks of siege-style attacks on Homs that have come to symbolize the desperation and defiance of the nearly year-old uprising against President Bashar Assad. The Syrian military appears to be stepping up assaults to block the opposition from gaining further ground and political credibility with the West and Arab allies. The Editor speaks Ash Wednesday: shootings, Mardi Gras, et al

Ash Wednesday, when I first came here and long after was a most pleasant day. The big attraction was (and thankfully still is) the Agricultural Show. From its humble beginnings on the George Town Cricket Oval to its own ground in Lower Valley, it has grown and grown and is THE thing to do on this holiday. First, of course, especially if you are an Anglican Episcopal or Roman Catholic, it demands a visit to your local church. Ash Wednesday is a solemn occasion as it marks the start of Lent – 46 days before Easter. According to the canonical gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the desert before the beginning of his public ministry, during which he endured temptation by Satan. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of this 40-day liturgical period of prayer and fasting. Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of adherents as a sign of mourning and repentance to God. The ashes used are typically gathered after the palms from the previous year’s Palm Sunday are burned. It is one of the Holiest Days of the year. It was, therefore, with much surprise, that the Government’s own Pirates Week Festival decided to hold a Mardi Gras celebration on this Holy Day in town right in front of the passengers from the six tourist ships. This was complete with skimpy bodies gyrating around on stage, waving their behinds and chests and throwing beads, to heavy beating music that was so loud your head throbbed and hurt. It was impossible to speak unless you shouted in another person’s ear. Mardi Gras is celebrated EVERYWHERE to culminate on Shrove/Fat Tuesday the day BEFORE Ash Wednesday! There would have been the biggest controversy imaginable if New Orleans (the most famous place for Mardi Gras Carnival) decided to extend the festival over to Ash Wednesday. Tuesday is the last night of eating rich, fatty foods before the season of Lent starts. The Cayman Islands prides itself on its religious heritage and we don’t permit loud music and public

partying on Sundays and yet Government actually not only allowed this but also instigated it. I am not a prude and I am not against having a good time and, until last year, I have been involved in Pirates Week since 1983. I am, however, appalled they did this. And why would Government want to put on another event to clash with their own and traditional Agricultural Show? Is it no wonder our young people forget this part of our heritage when church was at the very centre of it. When crime was a rarity and a shooting was unheard of. When the young accompanied their parents to church and were not allowed to run riot around the church aisles because they were taught that a church building demanded respect! The gradual erosion of this has happened everywhere. We clung to it here but now it is not the ‘cool’ thing to do. Young persons going to church are looked at as being “strange” and we read and watch the news how the Christian religion has no place in the school system. I say ‘Christian’ because the Muslims dominate our news every day, mostly with hysterical fervent anger at every non-believer. And the rest of us must not upset them. We see young Muslims with guns and so this is the ‘cool’ religion. Can you imagine what would have happened if a Mardi Gras type festival was held on one of their holy days? It is OK to burn a Bible but a copy of the Koran means going to war. With this background it comes as no shock to have a double shooting here on Ash Wednesday. In the early hours of the morning not one but TWO people were shot outside the Club 7 nightclub on the West Bay Road in the heart of the tourist area. The RCIPS acted quickly and a man has been arrested. Our newspaper, iNews Cayman, is not allowed in any of the hotels and some of the restaurants as the proprietors don’t want their patrons and guests to read about the crime here. You see, if you bury your head in the sand along our beautiful 7 Mile Beach, there is no crime. I wish that was true. I wish I could turn the clock back to when Ash Wednesday was a wonderful religious and family day and our government respected it too.

Jamaica gang feuds driving rise in murder rate KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Jamaica is developing a new policy to battle crime as gang violence drives the homicide rate higher, the country’s top security official said Tuesday. National Security Minister Peter Bunting said 165 killings have been reported by police so far in 2012, compared to 135 slayings during the corresponding period last year on the Caribbean island of 2.8 million people. Violent gangs are deeply entrenched in Spanish Town, just west of Kingston, and in some residential sections of the northwestern parish of St. James, which includes the resort city of Montego Bay. Fighting between the gangs for control of drug trafficking and extortion rackets has long been blamed for the majority of Jamaica’s homicides. Police Commissioner Owen Ellington said at a news conference with Bunting that much of the security forces’ resources are now focused on trying to contain 42 active gang conflicts. Ellington told reporters that the Shower Posse gang, which was controlled by convicted drug kingpin Christopher “Dudus” Coke from his slum stronghold of Tivoli Gardens, has been significantly hobbled since his capture in June 2010 but remains an active gang in West Kingston. Bunting said Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller’s nearly twomonth-old government intends to fast-track anti-gang legislation and is crafting a new security policy meant to reduce crime to “First World levels” by 2017, when he hopes to have a maximum of just 321 killings. A U.N. study on the Caribbean released earlier this month said Jamaica has had the world’s thirdhighest murder rate over the past decade, with about 60 murders per 100,000 inhabitants. Such workers are easily replaced. “We don’t always want to be chasing out the symptoms, we want to get to the infection,” he told reporters at the prime minister’s offices. Bunting intends to create a task force to identify and arrest crime facilitators, such as accountants, real estate brokers, lawyers and corrupt public officials. He also hopes to give courts greater power to seize their assets. He also said Jamaican society must undergo “mental reconditioning” to encourage more people to report crimes. Those who live in Jamaica’s slums are deeply distrustful of the police and authorities, and an anti-informant culture is widespread.

Philippines’ Arroyo pleads not guilty to fraud MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo pleaded not guilty to an electoral fraud charge Thursday at the opening of a landmark trial that is seen as a key test of her reformist successor’s campaign to stamp out corruption. Arroyo, president from 2001 to 2010, is accused of rigging the results of senatorial polls in 2007 to favor her candidates. The electoral sabotage charge is the first of several criminal cases being prepared against her. “Not guilty,” she told the court in a soft voice and with a stoic expression after her defense team waived a full reading of charge details. If convicted, she could face life in prison. The stakes are high for both Arroyo and President Benigno Aquino III. Aquino risks losing public support if she is acquitted and his rallying cry of “no corruption, no poverty” may fizzle out as just another failed attempt to fix the graft and poor governance that have hounded the nation for decades. Arroyo’s acquittal would vindicate a former leader who has portrayed her prosecution as a political vendetta to destroy her reputation and mask Aquino’s failure to improve the lives of Filipinos, a third of whom lives on $1 a day. “Despite the continuous and massive vilification campaign against me and my family, I have always said that I will dispute all charges in the proper forum,” Arroyo said in a statement, adding she wants to clear her name.

She promised to respect the law and said she expects the same from the country’s leaders. Aquino’s spokesman Edwin Lacierda said that Arroyo’s arraignment “brings us one step closer toward attaining closure to the many controversies” during her administration. “Accountability escapes no one,” he said. The electoral fraud case against the former president centers on a notoriously corrupt southern Philippine region where all 12 of Arroyo’s Senate candidates swept all the votes and no opposition candidate won. According to the charges, there are witnesses who said Arroyo gave instruction to rig the vote in collusion with a powerful political clan leader, Andal Ampatuan Sr. Ampatuan is on trial facing murder charges in connection with the 2009 politically motivated massacre of 57 people, including 32 journalists and opponents. He has pleaded not guilty. Arroyo’s husband, Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo, said that his wife “feels the case is an injustice.” “There is no case here,” he added. He said his wife is frustrated, and still suffering from spine and back pain
that he said requires medical treatment abroad. After her appearance, which lasted about 10 minutes, Arroyo was escorted under tight security from the courtroom to a military hospital where she is detained while being treated for the spine ailment. Court spokeswoman Felda Domingo said the trial is historic because “the votes of the people were sabotaged and the accused is a former president.” Aquino has promised to root out corruption and said that no one should be allowed to evade justice. “There are no exceptions in our campaign against corruption,” he said in a speech Tuesday. “It shouldn’t matter if you are a former president or in the lower ranks of public service. If you are dishonest, then you must be held to account.” Arroyo’s arrest in November struck chord among many Filipinos hungry for accountability following her presidency, which was overshadowed by scandals, coup attempts and botched congressional hearings into corruption allegations involving Arroyo’s officials and family members. Apart from the electoral fraud charge, Arroyo is facing a second criminal case in a separate court over an overpriced deal with a Chinese telecommunications giant that allegedly involved huge kickbacks. Two more cases are being filed against her — for the alleged plunder of lottery funds and the alleged diversion of $17 million in state funds to boost her 2004 election.
Nepalese man, 72, claims to be world’s shortest KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) — He has never worked outside the home or seen a doctor, and until Wednesday, he had never left his remote mountain village in western Nepal. So 72-year-old Chandra Bahadur Dangi only recently learned he might be the world’s shortest man. Dangi says he’s only 22 inches (56 centimeters) tall — about the size of a toddler — and he’s hoping to claim the title. Guinness World Records said in an email Wednesday that its officials would arrive in Nepal’s capital Sunday to measure Dangi. Dangi took his first trip outside his village and his first trip on a plane to reach Katmandu on Wednesday.

“I am very happy to be in Katmandu for the first time in my life. I am here so I can take the Guinness title,” Dangi told reporters at the airport. Dangi, who has never been married, lives with his eldest brother and his family in Rhimkholi village, about 250 miles (400 kilometers) west of Katmandu. did not write this but it was sent to me. It is a ‘doctored’ copy of a number I have seen before but changed to suit the Cayman Islands. I hope you find it as funny as I did. In the year 2010 the Lord came unto Noah, who was now living in Frank Sound in the Cayman Islands and said, “Once again, the earth has become wicked and over-populated, and I see the end of all flesh before me. Build another Ark and save two of every living thing along with a few good humans.” He gave Noah the drawings, saying, “You have 6 months to build the Ark before I will start the unending rain for 40 days and 40 nights.” Six months later, the Lord looked down and saw Noah weeping in his yard- but no Ark. “Noah!” He roared, “I’m about to start the rain! Where is the Ark?” “Forgive me, Lord,” begged Noah, “but things have changed. I needed Planning Board approval and a Certificate of Occupancy. I’ve been arguing with the Frank Sound Fire Department about the need for a sprinkler system. My neighbours claim that I should have obtained planning permission for building the Ark in my yard because it is development of the site, even though in my view it is a temporary structure. We had to go to appeal to the Planning Tribunal for a decision. Then the Public Works Department and C.U.C. demanded a bond be posted for the future costs of moving power lines and other overhead obstructions to clear the passage for the Ark’s move to the North Sound. I told them that the sea would be coming to us, but they would hear nothing of it. Getting the wood was another problem. All the decent trees have

Preservation Orders on them and we live near the Mastic Trail in an area of Special Scientific Interest set up by the environmentalists in order to protect the Cayman Parrot. I tried to convince the environmentalists that I needed the wood to save the parrots - but no go! When I started gathering the turtles, iguanas, and dem other animals, the RCIP commenced an investigation. They insisted that I was confining wild animals against their will. They argued the accommodation was too restrictive, and it was cruel and inhumane to put so many animals in a confined space. Then the D.O.E. ruled that I couldn’t build the Ark until they’d conducted an environmental impact study on your proposed flood. I’m still trying to resolve a complaint with the Immigration Department on how many Caymanians I’m supposed to hire for my building team. They say I can’t use Cubans. They insist I have to hire only accredited workers with Ark-building experience. After the building of the Cimboco there were few Caymanians left with these skills and most of those are now with you oh Lord. To make matters worse, the Port Authority seized all my assets, claiming I’m trying to leave the country illegally with endangered species. Paradoxically, Lord they will not let the poor Cubans land on our fair shores. So, forgive me, Lord, but it would take at least 10 years for me to finish this Ark.” Suddenly the skies cleared, the sun began to shine, and a rainbow stretched across the North Sound, from West Bay to Rum Point. Noah looked up in wonder and asked, “You mean you’re not going to destroy the world?” “No,” said the Lord. “The Cayman Government beat me to it.”

We are obsessed with sex. The Western media is infatuated with it. There is little left to the imagination on most prime time TV shows on the major USA networks and it is the same in the UK. Because the majority all of our television, either from the cable or satellite, comes from the US I am basing this article on US television and US government and similar organisations programmes. The latest seasons for the major US networks, along with basic and pay cable channels, are filled with the most graphic, most exploratory displays of sex and sexuality since the inception of TV. However, it isn’t just the Western media that seems to enjoy delving into the seedy underbelly of intimacy, as there are more studies being conducted on sexual health than there are on any other aspects of medical science, excepting mental health and psychology. On one hand, there is the nearconstant confusion people have over the sexual health and behaviour of younger generations. Millions of US taxpayer dollars are being spent every year to analyse whether
or not government-sponsored sex education programmes in schools are effective. There are constant debates on the virtues of abstinence over just handing out condoms on street corners, with neither side really having a permanent grip on the issue or gaining an the upper hand on sex-related social problems such as venereal disease, overpopulation, and teenage pregnancies. In some areas, the studies about teen sexual health and behaviour are taking a drastic turn in the form of propositions to enforce control over such activities. Thankfully, most of these ideas have been quickly shot down, as most sensible people are able to see them as tactics that loudly echo Orwell’s “1984”. There are learned, educated professionals who are now examining all the sex on TV. While most of them are quite content to remain within the domain of criticism of the general aspects of TV reviewing, some of them are digging deeper into the racy scenes. In simpler terms, while most reviewers are focusing on things like level of cinematography, the beauty of the script, and the quality of the acting,

others are paying more attention to the more...physical scenes. The fact that most of them describe said scenes as vapid and devoid or artistic value or life does not really balance things out. While it is arguably wrong to sell a show based solely on how much skin is shown and who goes to bed with who, it is also wrong to criticise a mediocre show as a bad one solely because the more intimate scenes aren’t that ‘refined.’ Of course, one cannot discount the on-going argument on whether or
not certain sexual behaviours can be considered a sign of damaged mental health. Certainly, some behaviours are less conventional than others and may be a sign of some sort of mild psychiatric disorder, but very rarely is aberrant sexual behaviour itself directly linked to a mental disorder without other disorders being present. Nymphomania and satyriasis are old, archaic terms that have been removed from the latest psychological and psychiatric dictionaries, which can be taken as a sign that people are no longer equating sexual behavior with mental illness. However, the replacement term, ‘hypersexuality’, has a definition that is just as vague and subjective as the words that it replaced. Then there are the studies being conducted on matters like sexual impotence, the elusive female orgasm, and a thousand other things directly related to the act of genital copulation itself. Some organisations have estimated that anywhere from 10 to 25% of all research funding in the medical field ends up being spent on sexrelated research. This is a generous estimate, but the sad truth is that a large chunk of funding does end up going to that area, and not just because ‘sex sells’. And once upon a time sex was considered to be normal and fun.

Valentine’s Day has come and gone, but the sentiment behind it should be practiced daily. This “Hallmark” of holidays seems to be a day for celebrating your one true love. However, I have found it to be a day to celebrate all the special people in my life. I probably set in this direction over the twenty five years between my first marriage and my last. There were some wonderful romances in that time, but the constant was my friends and family… my true valentines. I have been blessed with

exceptional people in my life. One of these is my dentist, Jim McCrary, DDS. Along with his staff, you are reminded how you should be treated in a business situation. All of these lovely people are so kind and something you seldom find these days, capable and efficient. My first encounter with Dr. Jim was during a very difficult time in my life. I had been in an automobile accident; I had no income and had a broken tooth. With no money for essentials, I was uncertain what I was going to do. Through a bit of caring through my church, that Dr. Jim is also a member of, he offered
dental assistance. There is something about those that give unconditionally that makes it a condition for me to never forget them. Life is good; I have dental insurance and would never, ever, ever consider seeing another dentist. He is my choice for life and I am forever grateful for his generosity. So on a recent visit we discussed what we usually do… food and movies! (And he does understand me with all the instruments in my mouth. After all, it would take much more to silence me.) He began telling me about a dessert he had seen on the cover
of his wife’s magazine. I told Dr. Jim I would make it for him and arranged for his staff to send the recipe to me. However, when I was grocery shopping later, the first thing I saw was the Southern Living Magazine, February 2012 edition, and on the cover, under the headline of “Classic Southern Desserts” was the recipe for “Caramelised Banana Pudding”. I wasn’t certain how I would feel about the bananas being cooked, texture wise, but it was an amazing dish. Try it tonight and do something kind for someone today.
Caramelised Banana Pudding
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/4 cup butter 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon 4 large ripe bananas, sliced 1 cup granulated sugar, divided 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 2 large eggs 2 cups milk 4 large eggs, separated 2 tsp. vanilla 48 vanilla wafers Directions 1) Cook first 3 ingredients in a large skillet over medium heat, stirring constantly, 2 to 3 minutes or until bubbly. Add bananas; cook 2 to 3 minutes or until thoroughly heated. Remove from heat. 2) Whisk together 3/4 cup granulated sugar, flour, eggs, milk and 4 egg yolks in a heavy saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat,

whisking constantly, 8 to 10 minutes or until a pudding-like thickness. (Mixture will just begin to bubble and will coat back of wooden spoon.) Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. 3) Divide half of banana mixture, pudding and wafers among 8 (1 cup) ramekins or oven proof glass dishes. Layer with remaining banana mixture, pudding and wafers. 4) Beat 4 egg whites at high speed with an
electric mixer until foamy. Add remaining 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 Tbsp. at a time, beating until stiff peak form and sugar dissolves (2 to 4 minutes). Spread meringue over ramekins. Place ramekins on a baking sheet. 5) Bake at 325 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes or until meringue is golden. Let cool on a wire rack 30 minutes. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Last chance to register for Off The Beaten Track Ultra-Marathon The 3rd annual Off The Beaten Track 50k Ultra Marathon is just around the corner. This one of a kind trail run will be taking place Sunday, February 26, 2012 and is unique to other races not only in length, but also the route itself. Individual runners and relay teams of six are encouraged to take on this challenge. The official route for Off The Beaten Track has just been released. Unlike other races, this route will have limited markers and signage, so it is up to the runners

and brush, so it is intended to be a challenging course”. The route is divided into 6 Legs that comprise of Seven Mile Beach, West Bay, Safehaven, George Town, Airport/Business Parks and throughout South Sound. This year Off The Beaten Track will be donating half of the proceeds to Facing Africa, a charity that send doctors to Ethiopia and Nigeria help to children with the devastating disease Noma. The rest of the proceeds will help the very deserving local charities Cayman’s

British PM Cameron wants soccer anti-racism plan LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister David Cameron asked England’s soccer leaders Wednesday to provide a plan against racism in the sport after a series of high-profile cases involving the Premier League. Cameron addressed soccer officials, former players and antiracism campaigners at a summit on Downing Street, warning that abusive behavior by soccer stars is imitated by youngsters and must be stopped. “We have some problems still today,” Cameron said. “We need to act quickly to make sure those problems do not creep back in ... if everyone plays their role, then we can easily crush and deal with this problem.” The English Football Association must provide a full report detailing how racism and other forms of discrimination can be combatted. “We have committed to coming back with a detailed follow-up to this in two months,” FA chairman David Bernstein said. The government announced Wednesday it will give $4.7 million toward the English Football Association’s new coaching center in a bid to encourage more people from ethnic minorities to become managers. There are no black managers in the Premier League. In July, John Terry will become the first high-profile soccer player to stand trial for racial abuse following a confrontation with Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand in October. The Chelsea player was stripped of the England captaincy this month in a move opposed by coach Fabio Capello, who quit in protest. Sport Secretary Jeremy Hunt said after Wednesday’s summit that soccer needs to address “how we draw the line between banter and offensive language.” Liverpool, the 18-time English champion, was criticized for its support of striker Luis Suarez when he was banned for eight matches after racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra in October. A fine bowling spell from Ryan Bovell and strong batting from Ainsley Hall ensured Cayman Islands continued its winning streak at Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 5 (WCL Div. 5) when the side defeated Argentina by a comprehensive 10 wickets to ensure the team’s second win of the event. Host Singapore bounced back from defeat to Malaysia to beat Bahrain at the Singapore Cricket Club by 102 runs while Malaysia took on fellow WCL Div. 6 qualifiers Guernsey at
Kallang, where the Channel Island was defeated in a closely fought contest by just four runs. Cayman Islands continued its winning record against Argentina in Pepsi ICC World Cricket League events when the Americas sides took each other on at the Indian Association Ground. Abali Hoilett’s side lost the toss and were put into field, a decision Argentina captain Esteban MacDermott may have regretted after the side were bundled out for
93 runs in the 37th over of the game. The batsman to contribute any runs of note, and even then just 22, was veteran opener Grant Dugmore as the entire middle-order collapsed to the bowling from pace duo Conroy Wright and Ryan Bovell.
