Newborn Jordan Binckes looks set to gain the heart operation he desperately needs. Bangalore-based pediatrician and heart specialist Dr Devi Shetty, has offered to help the tiny tot who was born with two holes in his heart. “Dr Shetty is prepared to help, but the baby needs to get a bit older, a bit more mature,” said Gene Thompson, local director for Bangalore-based Dr Devi Shetty’s Narayana Group, which is planning the Narayana Cayman Medical University. “The analysis says between four months and six months, and that everything his doctor is doing right now is exactly right. They just want to wait a little while,” Mr Thompson said, “and continue his medication.” Michael Binckes, father to fiveweek old Jordan, said he was waiting for a final analysis by the Indian doctor, but that “Dr Shetty said he would do it for whatever the insurance will pay. We are just waiting for him to come back to us. “We are just so grateful. This is fantastic news. We cannot thank Dr Shetty enough.” A 5 August fundraiser at Lone Star Bar and Grill, where Jordan’s

“This looks likely to close,” he said of the two holes affecting Jordan’s heart. “It’s not unusual. They say they see this type of thing all the time, and they will sometimes close up by themselves. It’s not as urgent as long as he remains on medication. Continued on page 5

It’s the most daunting chair in Britain: Mastermind, a TV game show where Britain’s brainiest are grilled with excruciatingly difficult questions. “I’ve started so I’ll finish,” – one of the show’s catch phrases - was recently heard by 28-year-old Sarah Waller, winner of the first round of the show. Ms. Waller lives in Ascot, England, but she comes here to visit her mother’s cousin, Bill … who lives at Sea Spray Drive, Bodden Town. Each contestant has to answer general knowledge questions and then a section on their “specialist subject”. And Sarah has chosen the Cayman Islands. “I applied for the show in November last year, and the auditions were held in March,” Ms. Waller said. There was a moment of tension, however, during the general knowledge section. “I was asked the name of a dessert made with flower, eggs, and milk, cooked with brandy. I said, ‘crepe’ and John Humphries (the show’s host) said, ‘more?’ and I said, ‘Crêpe Suzette,” (the right answer). There was also a long quote from a famous historical person, but

she had no idea who it was when asked. “You’ll kick yourself when I tell you - it was Guy Fawkes,” Mr. Humphries said. Ms. Waller won the first round, which means she must go back to London in September when the next round will be filmed. “I chose ‘The life and work of Antonia Forest,’ as my specialist topic in the first round. When I go back for the next round, my topic will be, “The History of the Cayman Islands,” she said. Ms. Waller says the book, ‘Founded Upon the Seas: A History of the Cayman Islands and their People by Michael Craton has been very useful, and she began reading it while she was still in England. “I’ve been studying since May. I didn’t realise there was so much history here,” she said. “I’ve been finding out about events like the ’32 Hurricane and the Wreck of the Ten Sails. But there are so many things about Cayman’s history I just didn’t know…like the very first people to stay overnight here were Dutch,” she said. Mastermind, featuring Sarah, will be shown on television in the UK before Christmas. We’ll keep you posted on how Sarah does.

iTech Name change for Libyan square on Google Maps SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google Inc.’s online mapping service has changed the name of a Libyan location to what it was called before Moammar Gadhafi rose to power four decades ago. The change came late Sunday, just hours after rebel forces pushed into Tripoli with little resistance. “Green Square” is now “Martyrs’ Square” on the online map for Tripoli, reflecting what rebels are now calling it. The change was made quickly because Google now allows users to update its maps. A user did just that on Sunday night. Google approved it, making it visible to the public, shortly thereafter. Although the square’s name has been re-labeled on the map, users can find it by searching either name.

Record companies plan music downloading appeal

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Recording industry attorneys are appealing a recent ruling that reduced the amount of money a Minnesota woman must pay for willfully violating the copyrights of 24 songs. U.S. District Judge Michael Davis ruled last month that the $1.5 million penalty imposed by a jury was unreasonable, and that Jammie ThomasRasset of Brainerd should instead pay $54,000. The judge also ruled that making copyrighted works available on file-sharing networks does not constitute distribution — a decision that could prevent record labels from telling ThomasRasset to stop sharing songs in the future. The recording industry sued Thomas-Rasset in 2006 for illegally sharing music on the file-sharing site Kazaa. The case has seen multiple appeals.

Cat. 2 Hurricane Irene taking aim near the Carolinas Colin Wilson colin.wilson@ieyenews.com

All indications from the weather experts indicate Hurricane Irene (at 11am Tue 23) a Cat 2 storm should miss Miami and the Florida coast but may make landfall near Charleston, South Carolina on Friday night. Or some of the models show. However, another model forecasts a landfall near Morehead City, North Carolina on Sat evening. All the models agree that wherever it makes landfall, Irene will be a very powerful hurricane. Rob Lightbown on his Crown Weather website said on Tue “I fully expect Irene to track across the entire chain of the Bahamas starting this evening in the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas and exiting the northwestern Bahamas on Thursday afternoon. During this time, Irene is expected to intensify at a fairly rapid rate and very likely will be a Category 3 hurricane by this evening and a Category 4 hurricane by Wednesday night or Thursday morning. “After Thursday, I do think that Irene will start turning to the north-northwest and perhaps even due north. How quick Irene turns will depend heavily on how quickly several small troughs of low pressure track eastward across the northeastern United States. At this point, I think a blend of the tracks from the GFS, European and the UKMET models may be the way to go for a track forecast. The HWRF and GFDL models may still be too far west, however, any model trends back to the west towards the

At this point, I think we will see a landfall between Wilmington and Surf City, North Carolina on Saturday evening as potentially a Category 3 or a Category 4 hurricane with winds somewhere between 120 and 140 mph. “After making landfall in southeastern North Carolina, I think we will see a track that takes Irene north-northeastward right along the Mid-Atlantic coast as a hurricane to New York City by Sunday evening and then across much of New England as either a tropical storm or perhaps a Category 1 hurricane on Sunday night and Monday. “It needs to be emphasised that

Tests show no illegal drugs in Winehouse body Chris Goodman on the family’s behalf said “toxicology results returned to the Winehouse family by authorities have confirmed that there were no illegal substances in Amy’s system at the time of her death.” It said the family awaited the outcome of an inquest that is due to begin in October. Winehouse’s father, Mitch, has said his daughter had beaten her drug dependency three years before her death, but he admitted she was still struggling to control her drinking after several weeks of abstinence. Mitch Winehouse told mourners at the singer’s July 26 funeral that she

had said to him, “’Dad I’ve had enough of drinking, I can’t stand the look on your and the family’s faces anymore.’” The Winehouse family announced plans to establish a charitable foundation in the singer’s name to help people struggling with.

LONDON (AP) — Amy Winehouse had no illegal drugs in her system when she died, and it is still unclear what killed the singer, her family said yesterday. The family said in a statement that toxicology tests showed “alcohol was present,” but it hasn’t yet been determined if it contributed to her death. The 27-year-old soul diva, who had battled drug and alcohol addiction for years, was found dead in her London home on July 23, and an initial postmortem failed to determine the cause of death. Japan likely to replace unpopular PM Kan next week TOKYO (AP) — A former foreign minister announced his candidacy to lead Japan yesterday just hours after unpopular Prime Minister Naoto Kan said he would be out of the picture by early next week. Kan has been criticized for lacking leadership after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami and subsequent nuclear crisis, and survivors of the disasters complain of slow relief and recovery efforts. Polls show his approval rating is below 20 percent. Former Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara said Tuesday night he wants to take over the leadership to restore public trust and hope,

especially among disaster victims. “We must regain public trust in politics, and achieve policies that can help people sense of safety and hope for the future,” Maehara said. Maehara is a favorite to replace Kan and his entry could affect game plans for several other potential candidates. A security expert and a China hawk, the 49-year-old lawmaker has warned against China’s growing military spending and presence in the region. Maehara was transport and foreign ministers during Tokyo’s diplomatic spat with Beijing last year over small islands in the East

Libyan conflict causes oil price hike PARIS (AP) — Confusion over the extent of the rebels’ hold on the Libyan capital and a rally in stock markets drove oil prices higher Tuesday, a day after they fell in anticipation of the end of strongman Moammar Gadhafi’s regime. On Monday, Libyans celebrated the news that insurgents had reached Tripoli, but late in the day the appearance of Gadhafi’s son and potential successor, whom the rebels had claimed to have captured, called into doubt rebel declarations of victory. That confusion pushed benchmark oil for October delivery up $1.34 to to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

$85.76 in the afternoon Paris time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent crude was up 29 cents to $108.65 on the ICE Futures exchange. Despite the initial jubilation, investors have also questioned how fast Libya’s oil production could recover should the rebels take power. Fighting since February has cut the OPEC nation’s crude output to 60,000 barrels a day from about 1.5 million, and the country’s oil infrastructure has been damaged. Capital Economics noted that with

experts predicting Libya will take months, if not years, to ramp up production, traders may be putting hopes for the country on hold. They may instead be taking their cues from a rally in stock markets across Europe and Asia.

OPINIONS

The Editor Speaks Thugs target the elderly Colin Wilson colin.wilson@ieyenews.com

Have you noticed a common theme in our news stories lately? It is something so abhorrent it makes my stomach turn over with nausea. The thugs living in our midst. The scumbags of our society. The ones some of you are protecting. Their targets are the elderly. At one time there was a ‘code of conduct’ even with the most brutal of criminals. They never targetted elderly people. If they did and went to prison for it they would have a terrible time there. Their lives wouldn’t be worth living. If they had attacked an elderly person, especially a woman, they would be ‘snitched’ on or ‘grassed’. It means other criminals would inform the police on them. That code is dying today as more violence rains down upon a society that is supposedly better educated. Our headline on Tuesday (23) “Mean Streets” carried the subtitle - “Terrified granny says it was just like the movies.” Eunice Seymour, 70 years old, was robbed by a thug who pointed a gun at her and fired a shot through the ceiling of the shop she was working at.

iLocal

What a coward! Did he think she was going to give him a karate kick in the stomach or better still in his head? She would come leaping across the counter at him fists flying? She had a loaded shotgun stashed away out of sight? Come on now – there is an amnesty in place and all law abiding citizens with illegal guns would have handed them in by now! This specimen of low life couldn’t have thought that! But he is a ‘big shot’. He is ‘THE MAN!’ He’s going to get his thrill by terrifying almost to death a woman of 70! And he has no worries. The Cayman society – his relations and friends - look up to him so much they will protect him. 57 Year old grandmother, Meddie Connor, was shot twice last July during another senseless armed robbery. This low life who committed this act - this pillar of the criminal society is still at large. His own element, his own group of friends, his relations all think he’s a good guy. Another ‘The Man’. He terrorises elderly people with a gun. Shoots them twice. He is to be looked up to. No one is going to grass on HIM! Now do you see why it makes me feel so sick?

Research shows human fecal waste kills coral Diana Willington diana.willington@ieyenews.com

A human fecal bacterium kills coral, new research shows, and U.S. scientists say this is a warning to Florida and the Caribbean to protect prized reefs from sewage or face a threat to a key pillar of their tourism. Yesterday Tim Austin, Deputy Director of Research & Assessment at Cayman Islands Department of Environment (DOE) welcomed the findings and insisted Cayman Waters are on the whole very clean. “The DOE works very closely with Cayman water authorities to monitor the waters around the Cayman Islands. Regulations on sewage discharge are very strict here and it is completely against the law to dispose of human waste into the sea. In turn our waters have a very low number of pollutants. “Septic tanks are an issue but in particular, ‘live-aboard’ boats and boats without appropriate holding tanks are more of a concern. There are no pump out facilities or laws regulating boat sewage and so where the waste goes is anyone’s guess?” In an article published by the PLoS ONE scientific journal, researchers said they had identified a bacterium from human fecal waste as a killer of common Caribbean elkhorn coral, whose spiky, layered, ochre-colored growths populate reefs off Florida and across the Caribbean. The bacterium, Serratia marcescens, causes a coral disease known as “white pox,” producing leprosy-like lesions that eat away at, and kill, the coral, said the report by the scientists from Georgia and Florida universities. “This strain that kills coral comes only from human beings,” James W. Porter of the University of Georgia’s Odum School of Ecology, one of the report’s authors, told Reuters. Porter said the white pox disease caused by human waste, known scientifically as acroporid serratiosis (APS), had contributed heavily to an 88 percent decline of elkhorn coral in the Florida Keys over the last 15 years. Most of the human-origin waste water affecting the seas in the Florida Keys and wider Caribbean was untreated and was seeping into the ocean after being disposed of in in-ground receptacles such as septic tanks, the research article said. Coral reefs are among the most critically endangered habitats on

ATO seeks tax, penalties from Myer float The Australian Tax Office wants private equity entities based in Luxembourg and the Cayman Islands to stump up $738 million for tax, penalties and interest after they reaped $1.5 billion from the 2009 float of the Myer retail chain. While the Myer float has been a sobering experience for those who paid $4.10 a share in November 2009 – the stock was trading around $2.07 in afternoon trade - the ATO has been trying to claw back some of the proceeds for almost two years. The ATO believes entities in the Cayman Islands and Luxembourg should have paid income tax on the Myer sale. Documents released by the Federal Court today show the Tax Office wants TPG Newbridge Myer Ltd of the Cayman Islands and NB Queen SARL of Luxembourg to pay $452.24 million for tax arising from TPG’s $1.5

billion proceeds. It has also levied penalties of $226.12 million, interest on those penalties of $20.16 million, and interest of $40.33 million against what it claims is the outstanding tax debt of $452 million. The court this morning made orders allowing the ATO to serve notices of demand at the home of Ben Gray, the chief executive of the Australian division of the private equity firm, Texas Pacific Group. Lawyers for the Tax Office told the court it believed Mr Gray was a person who would bring the notices to the attention of for TPG Newbridge Myer Ltd of the Cayman Islands and NB Queen SARL of Luxembourg. Mr Gray is believed to be overseas. The Press Relations Manager, Owen Blicksilver, said, “TPG strongly believes it has met all of its Australian tax obligations in connection with the

investment in Myer Department Stores and its other investment activities in Australia and at all times has complied with Australian taxation laws and will continue to do so in the future.” TPG acquired the Myer department store chain in 2006, and three years later it sold its 81 per cent stake by way of a sharemarket float, realising $1.5 billion. A few days after the float, the Tax Office made an urgent application to the Victorian Supreme Court seeking a freeze order over a NAB account where proceeds from the float were directed. Although the Supreme Court in 2009 granted the injunction, there was little left in the bank account as the funds had been directed to NB Swanston BV in the Netherlands, then to its parent entity NB Queen SARL in Luxembourg which channelled the proceeds to TPG Newbridge Myer in the Cayman Islands. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Kate saves Branson’s mother from Carib fire

Name: Lyneth Monteith CINA Position: Second Vice-President Occupation: Principal John Gray High School The fire at Richard Branson’s property on the island of Necker.

LONDON (AP) — Academy Awardwinning actress Kate Winslet helped rescue Richard Branson’s elderly mother from a fire that destroyed his Caribbean home. The Virgin Group boss said in his blog that he wanted to offer “many thanks to Kate Winslet for helping to carry my 90 year (old) mum out of the main house to safety.” He joked that Winslet “was wondering when a director was going to shout ‘CUT!’ In a separate statement Tuesday, Branson praised Winslet’s two children, 10-year-old Mia and 7-year-old Joe, who were also staying in the house when it caught fire. He called them “two of the bravest kids I’ve ever come across.” Branson said he was staying in another property around 100 yards (metres) away with his wife, Joan and son Sam, 25. He said Sam noticed the main house in flames and ran over to make sure all the guests had got out. Branson said he also jumped out of bed and ran over to help. “I tried to get some sympathy for the fact that I’d jumped out of bed naked and rushed to the Great House in pitch darkness and hurricane force winds and ran straight in to a cactus bush,” Branson said. “The sympathy was not forthcoming for my injuries.” to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Branson said the fire broke out around 4 a.m. Monday during a tropical storm with lightning and high winds. He said Tuesday that there is still smoke rising from the house. Branson, 60, bought the island in the early 1980s and began building the Great House in 1982. He also has developed an exclusive eco-resort on the island showcasing renewable energy technology. His daughter Holly, who was staying at the house along with Winslet, was due to get married there in December. Branson said the wedding would still take place on

Winslet, 35, shot to international stardom with her appearance opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in James Cameron’s “Titanic,” and sealed her reputation with a best actress Academy Award in 2009 for “The Reader.” Winslet’s spokeswoman, Sara Keene, confirmed the actress was on the island and was unharmed. She said Winslet had no comment. Her two children are from marriages to directors Jim Threapleton and Sam Mendes.

Next generation of Cayman lawyers One Native’s Son II Caymanite, Art Exhibition & Sale • Sculptures • Paintings • Wall Art • Functional Art • Mosaics • Jewellery …and more

6 – 31 August 2011

(L-R): Anthony Partridge – Senior Counsel, Sarah Dombowsky, Thea Bush, Michael Testori, Annalisa Wallace, Nikhil Jha, Dorothy Scott Crumbley – Associate, Renee Prendergast

Underlining its commitment to developing the next generation of Caymanian attorneys, a number of Walkers’ sponsored law students spent this summer working with Walkers, gaining valuable experience and an insight into life at a busy law firm. The ‘Walkers Summer Legal Internship’ saw six of Walkers’ sponsored Caymanian law students of varying levels employed within Walkers’ Cayman Islands office for four weeks this summer. Each student shadowed a designated attorney, gaining genuine exposure to meaningful legal work in the Hedge Funds, Private Equity, Finance, Litigation and Trust Groups within Walkers. “The ‘Summer Legal Internship’ is just one strand in the professional development of our sponsored students, who we hope will all successfully complete their studies and progress to becoming Articled Clerks with Walkers and eventually fully fledged attorneys,” said Dorothy Scott Crumbley, an associate in Walkers’ Investment Funds Group and a member of Walkers’ Trainee Committee. “Indeed Nikhil Jha, one

14

of this summer’s group of students will begin his Articled Clerkship with Walkers directly after completing this internship.” The internship scheme ran from July 11th until August 5th this summer and in addition to assisting the attorneys, the students were engaged in a research project and were required to make a presentation, for which full training was given. The Summer Legal Internship was revamped by Walkers for 2011, with the duration shortened to four weeks from six weeks, however the students still received the full rate of pay for six weeks. “Our students work extremely hard at their studies throughout the year and continued to do so while employed with the firm,” said Anthony Partridge, senior counsel in Walkers’ Trusts Group and a member of Walkers’ Trainee Committee. “We fully appreciate the students’ efforts and wanted to ensure they still received some holiday without suffering financially, while at the same time gaining the benefit of what we feel is an immensely rewarding experience.”

The students that took part in this year’s Summer Legal Internship are all currently at varying stages of their legal education and professional development. Nikhil Jha has completed his law degree and professional legal practice course. Annalisa Wallace recently graduated from Durham University and Sarah Dombowsky has completed two years at the University of Kent, Canterbury. Thea Bush and Renee Prendergast have both completed their first year at the Cayman Islands Law School and Michael Testori has completed his A-levels at St Ignatius and is looking at UK university entry later this year. “We are delighted to have had such an exceptional group of students working with the firm.” This summer and we are fully committed to their success and professional development,” said Ms. Scott Crumbley. “Walkers was the first firm in the Cayman Islands to establish a comprehensive ‘Articled Clerk Training Programme’ and our proven methods have developed and been refined over more than 25 years to benefit Caymanians seeking a career in the legal sector.” to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

“The Dream Lives,” was Dr. Medina Pullings’ message at the Cayman Outreach Association’s Monthly dinner at the Triple C School Hall. The international Christian conference speaker and pastor told dinner guests to cherish and protect their God-given dreams, using the bible story of Joseph as an example. A God-given dream or vision could have great power, she said, not only to change your future, but to change the future of those around

Although Reuben, one of the brothers, spoke up for Joseph, he was still involved in the plot to get rid of him. “How many people in jail only intended to ‘go so far’?” she asked. Dr. Medina then described how

Joseph was pushed into an empty cistern before being sold into slavery. Yet he was faithful in whatever he did, and by a turn of events, rose to an important position within Pharaoh’s household. His hope came from a deep assurance of his relationship with God, and sustained him no matter how hopeless his circumstances, she said. “He knew who he was. Despite many setbacks and obstacles, Joseph had remained faithful, both in his relationship to God and his relationship to those around him. “When he went into Pharaoh’s house…blessing followed him,” she said. Steadfast hope and faith in the face

of adversity was a theme in many different scriptures, Dr. Medina said. She quoted from the Old Testament story of the widow whose son had just died, yet was still able to speak from a faith-filled heart, “ ‘All is Well,’ she told Elijah. “Only God can give you the peace that passes all understanding,” she said. “You’ve got to keep on dreaming no matter what it looks like,” she said, encouraging her listeners to keep going regardless of setbacks. “It’s not a setback, it’s a ‘set-up’ for the glory of God,” she said.

So... What really is an Android? Claire O’Dea

One of the most recent additions to the Tech Dictionary is “Android” which can be easily defined as “an operating software”. Like Apple’s iOS, Android operating software focuses on efficiency and enhancing the features of mobile devices such as cell phones and tablets. In 2005, Android, an infant company, was acquired by Google and has since produced a flexible, upgradeable system. The debut Android platform phone, the ‘HTC Dream’, was released in 2008. As consumer awareness grew, 2010 was a year of great successes for Android, mainly attributable to HTC’s collaboration with Google and launching its flagship Android device, the ‘Nexus One’, and Samsung releasing the ‘Nexus-S’. Since the original version of the software in 2007, many features have been added to enhance performance, functionality and user-friendliness. Android’s open source nature (anyone has access to the coding) has resulted in companies and individuals developing many innovative applications. The Android Market (application store run by Google) now has over 200,000 applications which have contributed significantly to the extended functionality of the devices. Android’s multitasking capabilities, customization, performance and open source platform are the main contributors to this system’s rapid growth. It has gained much popularity among developers and has proved a huge success in the Smartphone market. It is expected that Android will further establish brand image and awareness and continue to prove very successful in the highly competitive Smartphone market.

It’s alive! Space station’s humanoid robot awake CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA’s humanoid robot has finally awakened in space. Ground controllers turned Robonaut on Monday for the first time since it was delivered to the International Space Station in February. The test involved sending power to all of Robonaut’s systems. The robot was not commanded to move; that will happen next week. “Those electrons feel GOOD! One small step for man, one giant leap for tinman kind,” Robonaut posted in a Twitter update. (All right, so a Robonaut team member actually posted Monday’s tweets under AstroRobonaut.) The four visible light cameras that serve as Robonaut’s eyes turned on in the gold-colored head, as did the infrared camera, located in the robot’s mouth and needed for depth perception. One of Robonaut’s tweets showed the view inside the American lab, Destiny. “Sure wish I could move my head and look around,” Robonaut said in the tweet. Robonaut — the first humanoid robot in space — is being tested as a possible astronaut’s helper. The robot’s handlers at Mission Control in Houston cheered as everything came alive. The main computers — buried inside Robonaut’s stomach — kicked on, as did the more than 30 processors embedded in the arms for controlling the joints. “Robonaut behaved himself,” said deputy project manager Nicolaus

We continue our serialisation of Anne by Constance Fenimore Woolson

Anne

“Old Pierre detested dogs, yet always fed them”

Part 30

The good priest was surprised and touched to see the tears of the little man, stained, weazened, and worn with travel and grief; he took him over to the hermitage in his sharp-pointed boat, which skimmed the crests of the waves, the two sails wing-and- wing, and Pierre sat in the bottom, and held on with a death-grasp. As soon as his foot touched the shore, he declared, with regained fluency, that he would never again enter a boat, large or small, as long as he lived. He never did. In vain Père Michaux represented to him that he could earn more money in a city, in vain he offered to send him Eastward and place him with kind persons speaking his own tongue, who would procure a good situation for him; Pierre was obstinate. He listened, assented to all, but when the time came refused to go. “Are you or are you not going to send us that cook of yours?” wrote Father George at the end of two years. “This is the fifth time I have made ready for him.” “He will not go,” replied Père Michaux at last; “it seems that I must resign myself.” “If your Père Michaux is handsomer than I am,” said Dr. Gaston one day to Anne, “it is because he has had something palatable to eat all this time. In a long course of years saleratus tells.” Père Michaux was indeed a man of noble bearing; his face, although benign, wore an expression of authority, which came from the submissive obedience of his flock, which loved him as a father and revered him as a pope. His parish, a diocese in size, extended over the long point of the southern mainland; over the many islands of the Straits, large and small, some of them unnoted on the map, yet inhabited perhaps by a few halfbreeds, others dotted with Indian farms; over the village itself, where to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

stood the small weather-beaten old Church of St. Jean; and over the dim blue line of northern coast, as far as eye could reach or priest could go. His roadways were over the water, his carriage a boat; in the winter, a sledge. He was priest, bishop, governor, judge, and physician; his word was absolute. His partycolored flock referred all their disputes to him, and abided by his decisions—questions of fishing-nets as well as questions of conscience, cases of jealousy together with cases of fever. He stood alone. He was not propped. He had the rare leader’s mind. Thrown away on that wild Northern border? Not any more than Bishop Chase in Ohio, Captain John Smith in Virginia, or other versatile and autocratic pioneers. Many a man can lead in cities and in camps, among precedents and rules, but only a born leader can lead in a wilderness where he must make his own rules and be his own precedent every hour. The dogs trotted cheerfully, with all their bells ringing, round to the back door. Old Pierre detested dogs, yet always fed them with a strange sort of conscientiousness, partly from compassion, partly from fear. He could never accustom himself to the trains. To draw, he said,

was an undo like thing. To see the creatures rush by the island on a moonlight night over the white ice, like dogs of a dream, was enough to make the hair elevate itself. “Whose hair?” Rast had demanded. “Yours, or the dogs’?” For young Pronando was a frequent visitor at the hermitage, not as pupil or member of the flock, but as a candid young friend, admiring impartially both the priest and his cook? “Hast thou brought me again all those wide-mouthed dogs, brigands of unheard-of and neverto-be-satisfied emptiness, robbers of all things?” demanded Pierre, appearing at the kitchen door, ladle in hand. Antoine’s leathery cheeks wrinkled themselves into a grin as he unharnessed his team, all the dogs pawing and howling, and striving to be first at the entrance of this domain of plenty. “Hold thyself quiet, René. Wilt thou take the very sledge in, Lebeau?” he said, apostrophizing the leaders. But no sooner was the last strap loosened than all the dogs by common consent rushed at and over the little cook and into the kitchen in a manner, which would have insured them severe chastisement in any other kitchen in the diocese. Pierre darted about among their gaunt yellow bodies, railing at them for knocking down his pans, and calling upon all the saints to witness their rapacity; but in the mean time he was gathering together quickly fragments of whose choice and savory qualities René and Lebeau had distinct remembrance, and the other dogs anticipation. They leaped and danced round him on their awkward legs and shambling feet, bit and barked at each other, and rolled on the floor in a heap. Anywhere else the long whip would have curled round their lank ribs, but in old Pierre’s kitchen they knew they were safe.

Chasing caribbean fruits Dave Martins dave.martins@ieyenews.com

A Guyanese friend of mine, Alex Neptune, recently sent me a photo of the Caribbean fruits and vegetables he grows in his backyard in New York; he remarked on the number of fruits we have in the region, and that we appear to have lost some. Actually most of the fruits I remember chasing as a youngster in Guyana are still around; the more popular ones (paw paw, guava, mango, watermelon, banana, etc) are in your face everywhere, but the more exotic ones are still about. Golden apple (pomme cythere in Trinidad; June plum in Jamaica) is abundant, as is starapple (eat too many and it’s laxative time) – Trinis know it as caimit. In West Indian fashion, we have two fruits in Guyana called cashew: one with the little cashew nut on top, and our other cashew is that delicious purple fruit with the snow-white interior it’s pomerac in Trinidad; Jamaica apple in Jamaica) - but the proper name is Malay apple. (With its multilingual background, Trinidad has many things named differently from most Caribbean countries.) When I was growing up, a kids’ favourite was whitey (in Trinidad, padoo) so named for the snow-white flesh around the single black seed, and it still shows up in the markets. When I lived in Grand Cayman I had three whitey trees in my yard – the only ones in the island; I had smuggled in seeds from Guyana – and when I was cutting the grass, I would ride under the trees, and enjoy a few fruits in the shade. Whitey grows fast and bears a lot, and youngsters love it, but a Jamaican friend told me, “Dat ah bird food, sah.” Guinep is in season right now – called chenette or even ackee in other places – and is still a big favourite in Guyana with walkabout vendors and at the roadside, but always ask for a sample before you buy; some guineps are so sour they can make to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

All day Breakfast & Lunch your mouth pucker up like a fish out of water. Guinep, by the way, is family to lichee, but the latter needs a cooler climate to bear (as in the mountainous part of Jamaica). Defying all the experts in Cayman, including Mr. Otto, I planted one, but they were right. The tree grew beautifully but never produced a single fruit; not even a flower. I cut it down and planted a mango in the spot. Our various apple fruits – custard apple, sugar apple, monkey apple, baby apple (that last one is very tiny fruit that grows on a hedge) – still grow in the countryside. As an aside, there is a new plant called atemoya, which is a man-made graft of sugar apple (also called sweet sop) and cherimoya. Created in Florida, it produces a very large sugar apple, with very few seeds – unlike standard sugar apple – and is great eating. Growing wild all over the Eastern Caribbean is the children’s favourite dungs or dunks, that golden yellow fruit on a short, thorn-infested tree; Jamaicans label it coolie plum. Psidium, also known for its long fierce thorns, was a special treat for us growing up – you would roll the ripe ones around in your palm to soften them and then pop the fruit in your mouth. I have no recollection of passion fruit whatsoever as a kid, but it’s world-famous these days as is pomegranate, which we used to ignore because it’s mostly seed;

pomegranate is now the rage in North America for the wonderful nutrients it contains – who knew, eh? Soursop is abundant (makes a memorable ice cream), as is carambola, which we call five-finger, also known as star fruit, but this is another in that taste-before-you-buy category; some varieties of carambola can rival lime for sourness. In Guyana we still have that bright yellow plum (sometimes called hog plum) that makes a great picture piled high in the market, but for some reason the sweeter purple variety, known as governor plum in the region, is not found here, which is a pity – it’s delicious and makes a lovely drink. A true oddity is the aptly named stinking toe. Apart from the thick hard shell that you need a hammer to break, stinking toe is unique for its almost dusty fruit that dries up the saliva in your mouth like a sponge. Eating stinking toe is an exercise in oral gymnastics, and the fruit does smell like “foot cheese”, but this is another hit with youngsters. One big advantage is that you don’t have to climb for it; the fruit conveniently falls when ripe, and the hard shell gives it you undamaged. The smell is a killer, though; it comes through that hard shell; if somebody has stinking toe in the house, you know. In fact, I’m planning to mail one to Alex; it will probably send those sniffer dogs in US Customs running for cover.

* Does it make you look exotic, attractive, and beautiful inside out?

georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com

Lingerie plays a vital role in a woman’s life. Lingerie is not just close to the woman’s heart (no pun intended) but it is also the closest to her and enhances her sexuality like no other piece of clothing. The most important thing about a lingerie item is the fit. There’s no denying that perfectly well fitted lingerie can accentuate the female form, sensuality and outfit with aplomb. Whether you are a plus size woman, or a bride-to-be, or want to bring the passion back into your relationship, nothing really works to ignite the fire and spread the warmth like beautifully created lingerie! Whatever your reason for picking up lingerie, you must choose a lingerie based on your mood, preference in design, style, comfort, and purpose. Before you set your feet out for lingerie shopping get to know yourself better. Do you need lingerie that emphasizes your bodily curves, or do you need it to spice up your sex life or do you need lingerie to pamper yourself? Whatever your reason, trust us - there is more than one type of intimate apparel for any occasion you may have in mind. lingerie is ideal for you. Corsets and bustiers are widely popular amongst plus-size women buyers. Special lingerie like bridal lingerie caters to the very special needs of a newly married girl or a bride-to-be. To make you look your ravishing best on your wedding day, you can wear gorgeous bustier or lacy bridal lingerie that enhances the sensuality of your wedding dress. Nowadays, more and more brides-to-be prefer to wear white or off-white corsets with long flowing gowns. Worldwide, women have taken to lingerie shopping like never before. For a tempting and alluring effect buy sheer lingerie. Made from power mesh (see-through), stretch mesh material, or transparent fabrics, sheer lingerie is immensely popular amongst women 20s and 30s. Lycra lingerie is again a popular choice. Lightweight and stretchable, Lycra lingerie is forming fitting and tearresistant. Base your decision to purchase lingerie on use and purpose. The 3 rules of lingerie shopping need to be based on: * How best the lingerie enhances your body’s special features? * Does it cover the specific parts of your body properly and comfortably?

The fabrics define the comfort or feel of the lingerie against your skin. If you score comfort as the most important thing, then cotton lingerie is perfect for you. It is reasonably priced, long lasting, and easy to care for. Other fabric choices include Lycra/ Spandex, nylon, leather, chiffon, silk, microfibre etc. Lycra lingerie is stretchable and form fitting, easy to wash, and care for and wrinklefree! Choose a fabric that feels good against your skin, doesn’t cause you rashes, and is likely to last longer with minimal wear and tear. After all, you will be wearing lingerie throughout the day.

Lingerie Guide Here’s a guide to help you decide which lingerie is best for you. 1. Bra: A versatile support providing commonest lingerie. 2. Teddy: It is like a one-piece swimming suit but with a built- in panty area. 3. Camisole: One of my favorites. Can be worn under a formal jacket or as a sleeveless top; it covers you from bust to hips. 4. Chemise: A thigh length short nightgown 5. Thongs: Made from transparent fabric, thongs offer more coverage in the front and are held up by a stringlike piece. Allows you freedom from panty lines 6. Negligee: A nightgown or robe that is longer and lightweight 7. Pajamas: A pant and top set 8. Bustier: A type of strap-less bra that covers up to the waist 9. Basque: A bra substitute that covers from the bust to hips. As a rule of thumb to buying the best lingerie, remember only invest in one that promotes your self-confidence and makes you look and feel like a Goddess. Because you are – just like me! to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

APPLY SUNSCREEN PROPERLY.

The end of the school year is here and savvy moms and dads by now have made all the arrangements for summer. Summer camps and leisurely days at the pool or beach are just a few of the summer rituals for many families. However if you're tempted to let your child play outdoors for even a few minutes without proper sun protection, you might want to think twice. Adolescence and childhood are critical periods during which exposure to UV radiation is more likely to contribute to skin cancer in later life. Children with fair skin, blond or red hair and blue or green eyes are at the highest risk of sunburn. But darker-skinned children also need sun protection. With this in mind, it’s important that parents teach their children how to enjoy fun in the sun safely.

LIMIT OUTDOOR PLAYTIME BETWEEN 10A.M. AND 4P.M.

Apply a thick, even coat to all exposed areas 20 - 30 minutes before your child goes out in the sun. Choose a sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher. Make sure it's labeled "broad spectrum," which means it blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight. For your little ones, sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide should be selected as these compounds are less irritating than others. Sunscreen sticks are best for the face because they are sweat proof and less likely to drip. Don't forget nose, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck; lips can also burn, so apply a lip balm with SPF protection. Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours, or after sweating or swimming.

COVER FROM HEAD TO TOE. Wearing protective clothing and hats is one of the primary ways of warding off UV damage. When wet, light coloured clothing transmits just as much sunlight as bare skin. Keep your kids covered with dark colours, long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. And don't forget the accessories: sunglasses with UV protection to guard against burned corneas, and hats to prevent sunburned scalps and faces. Protective clothing, hats with wide brims, and sunglasses are just as important for babies. At the beach, bring along a large umbrella.

Parents, you are the best teacher by practicing sun safety yourself. If your child sees you following sun safety rules, he'll take them for granted and follow suit. Teach every member of the family how to protect their skin and eyes. With proper supervision, children can learn to protect themselves and enjoy summer fun without sacrificing the health of their skin.

Avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun's rays are at their strongest. Even on cloudy or cooler days, ultraviolet (UV) rays remain strong. Shady spots can be just as tricky because of reflected light. If your child is playing outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply ample sunscreen.

WATCH OUT FOR MEDICATIONS. Some medications increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, so make sure to ask your doctor whether your child may be at risk. Prescription antibiotics and acne medications are the most notorious culprits, but when in doubt, ask.

An extranet is a private network within which document sharing can take place by specific groups of users outside the organisation through a network administrator. An organisation may allow authorised customers and partner’s access to the system after verifying the usernames and passwords. Architectural firms have increasingly been using extranet to send and receive documents in a secure environment. All the relevant information about a particular project can be made available to all the individuals who are part of the project, be it the clients or other partners in the venture. Construction companies can access the CAD drawings and plans immediately, without much waiting. It also enhances the relationship with the clients who can receive the relevant documents and send their approvals accordingly. Extranets allows all the team members working on the project, be it the employees, vendors, suppliers or clients to share the design plans, documents and hence collaborate online. This aids in a better customer service and prevents unnecessary lengthening of project schedules. A lot of money is invested in any architectural venture and all the delays lead to substantial amount of money going down the drain. An extranet gives a platform to the workers to perform multisite collaborations. Since all the data exchanges take place in real time, there are chances of less rework. With the usage of extranets increasing, special software packages have been developed specifically for the architectural firms. They support project management, e-mail management, accounting and scheduling. An extranet not only enhances the process of decision-making but also improves the relationship among clients and partners.

Forward Welbeck, who scored the opener in the 61st minute at Old Trafford on Monday, was one of a starting XI with an average age of just over 23. “This group have such fantastic ability, it forces me to play them really,” said Ferguson. “Danny is still only 20 years of age and the lad has a great future.” Welbeck impressed after the interval following an indifferent first-half performance, when he was guilty of conceding possession. “I thought in the first half, Danny didn’t play as a centre forward,” added the 69-yearold manager. “He was too much in midfield, he and Wayne [Rooney]. We stressed at half-time that we needed more of a presence up front, we needed our targets up there and we needed someone to run through. “In the second half they were much better that way and it made a difference to our game.” Welbeck progressed through United’s youth teams and made his senior debut in a League Cup match at home to Middlesbrough in 2008. He spent a short time on loan at Preston at the start of 2010 before he was farmed out to Sunderland for the entire 2010-2011 campaign.

With the swim distance increasing by another 200 metres, there are varying opinions as to what effect the addition will have on particular performances. Although placings each week so far have resulted in Marius Acker and Matthew Courtis ending up 1-2 in the men’s category. Jacqui Retief and Pam Abbott matching that in the ladies and Cajun Hounds and Lusher and Lowry doing the same in the team division. There are a number of other individuals and twosomes hoping to pounce on any error by the leaders and thus gain a podium appearance. The Cayman Islands Triathlon Association, organiser of the event, invites everyone to come and view the culmination of this exciting battle. Performance awards and random prizes will be distributed following the tallying of results.

Everyone was pleasant and helpful and provided service which went above and beyond, which made all the difference,” Mr. Loulan noted.

Prize trip winner Luis Fort and Charles “Bo” Outlaw at the recent CIBA-Orlando Magic Basketball camp at Camana Bay

Premier McKeeva Bush lauded the CIBA and DOT for hosting another successful camp for the third year running. “The continuing partnership between the Orlando Magic, the Cayman Islands Basketball Association and the Department of Tourism allows scores of young Caymanian basketball players to learn from some of the best in the sport in this annual camp. This is a welcome opportunity through which the talents of our young players can be discovered and nurtured and I am pleased that this summer camp continues to be a part of our sports tourism calendar,” the Premier stated. Basketball camp is simply magic

Participants at the 2011 CIBA-Orlando Magic Basketball Camp, held August 1-5 at Camana Bay

Florida resident 11-year-old Luis Fort, recently had a dream summer camp experience in the Cayman Islands, as part of the annual Orlando Magic Basketball Camp, hosted by the Cayman Islands Basketball Association (CIBA) and sponsored by the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism. Luis won the prize trip, courtesy of the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, which offered a sweepstakes whereby young basketball players in Florida could have the opportunity to participate in a camp in Cayman. Luis was accompanied by his mother Noemi Fort and the two stayed at Sunshine Suites, which donated the four-night stay in support of the DOT’s programme. Round-trip airfare was provided courtesy of Cayman Airways. The pair also received complimentary entry to popular island attractions, Cayman Turtle Farm, the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park and Pedro St. James Castle. “Partnering with the Orlando Magic Basketball presented an exciting and

viable opportunity to bring visibility of the Cayman Islands to a new audience of young basketball players and their families,” said Shomari Scott, Acting Director of Tourism. “Direct benefits to the destination included exposure for the Cayman Islands on a dedicated page on the Orlando Magic youth basketball site and inclusion in 16,000 promotional brochures. Additionally, the Department of Tourism will be able to leverage the relationship by directly marketing to the Orlando Magic’s summer camp database of 7,500 families to promote family friendly offers such as Cayman Summer Splash.” Over the week-long camp, held at the multi-purpose hall at Cayman International School, Camana Bay, Luis learnt the fundamentals of basketball from the team of Orlando Magic coaches, who conducted the camp. They included professional coaches, players and college students. Among them were Tom Conrad, Brian Wright, Adam Branch, Adam Teal and Benson Callier. Special guest

Charles “Bo” Outlaw was a highlight of the camp for the many participating young players, all aged 7 to 16. Luis also had the opportunity to interact and make friends with scores of Caymanian youngsters who also attended the camp. Ms Fort was effusive in her praise of the camp organisers and the Department of Tourism, who made the trip possible for her son. “I sincerely thank the Orlando Magic for this opportunity for Luis. He had an amazing time! Every time I looked at him, he had a huge smile on his face. The coaches were very professional; they all went above and beyond any of my expectations and they made us feel right at home,” Ms. Fort said. For mother and son, the time spent on island was also a special experience. “The excursions arranged by the Department of Tourism were perfect. We loved the Dolphin experience and the Cayman Turtle Farm. Our driver Chris was very accommodating and the hotel accommodation was great,” she said. Continued on page 30
