A teenage girl is fighting for her life after she was knocked off an inflatable banana boat by a jet ski rider. The 16-year-old tourist from New York was yesterday airlifted to Miami in a critical condition. She was visiting the island onboard a cruise ship and was at the beach with members of her family. A 24-year-old woman was also injured when the jet ski struck. Yesterday tourism chiefs in Cayman called for tighter restrictions on the watersports industry. Trina Christian-Savage, Executive Director of the Cayman Islands Tourist Association was distraught at news of Thursday’s accident. “It’s devastating when something like this happens, I understand.” she said. “If only there was something we could do to prevent this.

Midsummer Night’s Dream Twenty seven children from toddlers up to teenagers made the Cayman Drama Society’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream a memorable and spectacular performance at the Prospect Playhouse. Apart from great performances from

the actors, the set, lighting and costumes were very professional and imaginative. The play was given a Cayman twist, with the character Puck appearing as a Blue Iguana, as well as many references to local geography and culture. Full story on page 3

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Christopher Tobutt christopher.tobutt@ieyenews.com

William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, is a love story involving two couples, magic love potions, and fairies all together in a wood. Then there is the right man who falls in love with the wrong woman, and you have all the ingredients for a really great play. That play produced by the Cayman Drama Society is showing at the Prospect Playhouse in Red Bay. All of the 27 children who make up the cast played their roles expertly, right down to three year-old Zachary Watler who plays the Indian Changeling boy. Henry Hill, a Year 10 Clifton Hunter student, played Theseus, and has thoroughly enjoyed his first Cayman Drama Society production, “Being in a CDS production was probably the best decision I made in life,” he said.

15-year-old Alanna Warwick-Smith played the part of Bottom with great verve and finesse, and Alexandra Hayman played Helena. 14-year old Adam Stoner who played Demetrius is no stranger to performing, and is also in the Cayman Prep steel band, Pantastic. “I have really enjoyed being a member of the cast, getting to know everyone and learning a lot about acting,” he said. In the opening scene, Hermia refuses to follow her father Egeus’s instructions to marry Demetrius, whom he has chosen for her. In response, Egeus quotes before Theseus an ancient Athenian law (in this production, “Caymanian Law,”) whereby a daughter must marry the suitor chosen by her father, or else face death. Theseus offers her another choice: lifelong chastity worshiping the goddess Diana as a nun. Hermia and Lysander decide to elope that night. They confide their

plan to their friend, Helena and she, in love with Demetrius and hoping to win his affections, tells him of the plan. That night, all four lovers steal away into the forest. A group of Athenia tradesmen, led by Peter Quince, are planning to perform a play, ‘The Tragedy of Pyramus and Thisbe,’ and they decide to rehearse in the same forest. Oberon sends Puck to find a magic flower, the juice of which, squeezed onto the eyes of someone sleeping, will cause them to fall in love with the first creature they see waking. Oberon uses the juice on Titania and she falls rapturously in love with one of the tradesmen, Bottom, who has been bewitched by Puck and transformed into a donkey. Oberon also tells Puck to use the juice on Demetrius so that he will fall in love with Helena, but Puck, mistaking the two Athenian youths, uses it on Lysander instead, who falls in love with Helena.

Continued from front page “Our watersports operators will be discussing this. We discuss safety at every meeting. It is a priority for us. “We want to provide as safe a service as we can, as is possible. Especially with the upcoming holiday season, we call on everyone to be as careful as possible.” Harry Lalli, president of CITA, was dismayed at the episode. He added: “It’s a tragic accident. We will look into it because safety is a priority for the association. “We will certainly look at the regulations to see if they need to be changed. We will find out how it happened and make sure it does not happen again in the future.

“It’s not good for tourism. It’s not good for anybody.” A spokeswoman for the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service said: “At 12.45 pm on Thursday, 24 November 2011, police received a report that a jet ski had collided with the banana boat just off public beach. “The jet- ski was being ridden by a 17-year-old male when it collided with a yellow banana shaped inflatable which was being towed by a power boat. “Two females, aged 16 and 24 years, were thrown from the inflatable and were subsequently transported to the Cayman Islands Hospital for treatment. ”The 24-year-old was released from hospital but the teenager is now in a critical condition and arrangements are being made to airlift her to Florida for treatment.

“All three people involved were cruise ship passengers. The injured girl is from New York, US. Police enquiries into how the collision occurred are ongoing.”

St Maarten finds local lionfish tainted with toxin KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Conservationists in St. Maarten are warning islanders not to eat lionfish after tests found a naturally occurring toxin in the flesh of the candystriped invasive species, officials said Thursday. The findings have dealt a blow to the tiny Dutch territory’s efforts to contain the spread of the venomous predator, a native of the Indian and Pacific oceans that has colonised large swaths of the region after a few apparently escaped a Florida fish tank in 1992. Following the lead of other Caribbean islands, St. Maarten had hoped to promote the species as batter-fried or grilled delectables to slow their spread. They were found in the Dutch territory’s waters in July 2010 and have been multiplying and gobbling up native fish and crustaceans ever since. Lionfish were first detected in the Bahamas in 2004 and rapidly spread south into the warm waters of the Caribbean. But Tadzio Bervoets, chief of St. Maarten’s Nature Foundation, said nearly half of the football-sized lionfish captured in local waters were found to have a biotoxin that can lead to ciguatera poisoning, a rarely fatal but growing menace that has long been known in the Caribbean, South Pacific, and warmer areas of the Indian Ocean. Ciguatera poisoning is caused by eating some subtropical and tropical fish predators, including grouper, snapper and barracuda, which live by reefs and accumulate toxins through their diet. They accumulate the toxin in their flesh from eating smaller fish that graze on poisonous algae. People who have eaten infected fish can experience abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tingling and numbness. Most patients recover in a few days. In rare, worst cases there is paralysis and even death. No one has gotten sick from eating lionfish in St. Maarten, but the territory typically has more than a dozen cases of ciguatera poisoning each year from people eating barracuda and jacks. St. Maarten’s waters have long suffered from high levels of ciguatoxin, to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

so Bervoets said the test results on lionfish were not a complete surprise. Nonetheless, he added that island officials “were very much hoping that the results were negative.” “This means that we cannot safely promote lionfish as an edible species” in St. Maarten as officials are doing elsewhere, he said. Across the Caribbean, governments and conservation groups have been sponsoring fishing tournaments, encouraging anglers to go after slowswimming lionfish and marketing it to restaurants and diners, hoping to stave off an already severe crisis. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration have had no official reports of illness associated with the consumption of lionfish filets. “But in endemic areas of ciguatera, toxins have been detected at levels exceeding FDA guidance and therefore could cause illness if consumed,” said FDA spokesman Douglas Karas. “The Virgin Islands is one of those areas.” In recent months, the U.S. agency has collected more than 186 lionfish from the waters around the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Of these, scientists have tested 74 fish to date, with 26 percent confirmed to contain ciguatoxins at levels exceeding FDA guidance, according to Karas.

William Coles, chief of environmental education with the U.S. Virgin Islands Division of Fish and Wildlife, said the U.S. territory’s fishermen know well where ciguatoxins accumulate and avoid catching fish in those endemic areas. “So we have about the same level of concern with lionfish that we do with any other fish. But it’s still a major concern,” Coles said. Across the region, it remains to be seen exactly how much impact fishing and marketing of lionfish can have. For now, it’s the only hope in sight. Scientists are still researching what keeps lionfish in check back home in their native range even as they’re going gangbusters in the Caribbean, mostly untouched by the local sharks, moray eels and grouper. Lionfish, which carry venom in a flowing mane of spines and can deliver painful stings, have also colonised swaths of the Eastern Seaboard. Bervoets said he and his staff spend much of their free time hunting lionfish and encourage others to “hunt them and eradicate them in any which way they can.” “They are definitely multiplying. That’s why it’s such a shame we can’t eat them here,” he said Thursday in a telephone interview from St. Maarten.

JK Rowling: UK press left me feeling under siege LONDON (AP) — Writer J.K. Rowling and actress Sienna Miller gave a London courtroom a vivid picture on Thursday of the anxiety, anger and fear produced by living in the glare of Britain’s tabloid media, describing how press intrusion made them feel like prisoners in their own homes. The creator of boy wizard Harry Potter told Britain’s media ethics inquiry that having journalists camped on her doorstep was “like being under siege and like being a hostage.” Miller said years of car chases, midnight pursuits and intimate revelations had left her feeling violated, paranoid

and anxious. “The attitude seems to be absolutely cavalier,” Rowling said. “You’re famous, you’re asking for it.” The pair were among a diverse cast of witnesses — Hollywood star Hugh Grant, a former soccer player, a former aide to supermodel Elle Macpherson and the parents of missing and murdered children — who have described how becoming the focus of Britain’s tabloid press wreaked havoc on their lives. Rowling said she was completely unprepared for the media attention she began to receive when her

first book, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” became a sensation. The seven Potter books have sold more than 450 million copies, spawned a hit movie series and propelled Rowling from struggling single mother to one of Britain’s richest people.

US awaits release of three students PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Family and friends of three American students arrested during a protest in Cairo waited anxiously Friday for news that they had been released from police custody. Derrik Sweeney, Luke Gates and Gregory Porter, who attend the American University in Cairo, were arrested on the roof of a university building near Cairo’s iconic Tahrir Square on Sunday. Officials accused them of throwing firebombs at security forces fighting with protesters. A court in Egypt ordered the

release of the students, a lawyer in Philadelphia confirmed Thursday. Attorney Theodore Simon, who represents Porter, a 19-year-old student at Drexel University in Philadelphia, said he spoke by phone with Porter, describing the student’s demeanor as “calm and measured, demonstrating a maturity well beyond his 19 years.” “He was extremely thankful and appreciative for our efforts and the unconditional support of his mother and father,” Simon said. Porter is from Glenside, Pa., a suburb of Philadelphia.

Sweeney’s mother, Joy Sweeney, said she is “absolutely elated” at the news of her 19-year-old son’s release. “I can’t wait to give him a huge hug and tell him how much I love him,” she said, adding that the news of the court order was the best Thanksgiving gift.

Yemen president of 33 years to quit amid uprising SANAA, Yemen (AP) — Yemen’s autocratic leader agreed Wednesday to step down after months of demonstrations against his 33-year rule, pleasing the U.S. and its Gulf allies who feared that collapsing security in the impoverished nation was allowing an active al-Qaida franchise to step up operations. President Ali Abdullah Saleh is the fourth leader to lose power in the wave of Arab Spring uprisings this year, following longtime dictators in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. But the deal ushering Saleh from power grants him immunity from prosecution and doesn’t explicitly ban to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

him from the country’s political life — raising doubts that it will address Yemen’s many problems. The deal opens the way to what will likely be a messy power struggle. Among those possibly vying for power are Saleh’s son and nephew, who command the country’s bestequipped military units; powerful tribal leaders; and the commander of a renegade battalion. Saleh had stubbornly clung to power despite nearly 10 months of huge street protests in which hundreds of people were killed by his security forces. At one point, Saleh’s palace mosque was bombed and he

was treated in Saudi Arabia for severe burns. When he finally signed the agreement to step down, he did so in the Saudi capital of Riyadh after most of his allies had abandoned him and joined the opposition.

The Editor speaks

Christmas cracker crackdown by RCIPS Colin Wilson

If any one has any complaining to do about the RCIPS’s colin.wilson@ieyenews.com seasonal police road safety crackdown this year, codenamed Operation Christmas Cracker, beginning on Monday 28th Nov., we have only ourselves to blame. “Last year we were so disappointed by the blatant disregard that people showed for safety on our roads that we called for a multi-agency national road safety strategy to be developed,” said Superintendent Adrian Seales. “Since then the working group has worked closely with Government and we’re pleased to say that many of the recommendations we made to make Cayman’s roads safer have been passed in the new Traffic Law. We’re particularly delighted that the cell phone driving epidemic is being addressed. That’s why we are calling for people to be responsible and use Christmas as an opportunity to give a gift that could save a life this year.” Operation Christmas Cracker will not only be targeted at road safety. Home and business security will be high on the

iCulture

list including safety at sea and personal safety. Expect road blocks day and night for the next five weeks where the police will be on hand to give you their usual cheery Christmas message of “good tidings” as you wait patiently in the traffic queues. If you get impatient remember it is for your own protection and, if you are drunk, for everyone else’s. If you plan any criminal activities I suggest you don’t. Police will be especially on the lookout for illegal drugs, guns and other weapons. I strongly suggest to all who carry cellphones (is that everyone of us?) to make sure a hands free set is on your pre-Christmas shopping list. You are going to need it now. If one life is saved by us being inconvenienced, even for 30 minutes or so, as we listen to the radio in our slow moving or stationary car, it is worth it. If one burglary is stopped, if one gun is found, if a single sachet of drugs is discovered, it will be worth it. I will even help pull that RCIPS Christmas Cracker.

ROBERT C. YOUNG Joan Wilson

joan.wilson@ieyenews.com

What a joyous occasion it must have been At the dock in George Town - just imagine the scene. As excited church members stood all around Eagerly awaiting the arrival of Robert C. Young. They had no idea on the looks of this young man Who had left his home in Scotland to come to Grand Cayman. Having volunteered his services as a missionary The Church of Scotland soon appointed him to serve overseas. Can you imagine crossing the mighty Atlantic in 1907? That ocean voyage I bet was anything but heaven And at the age of twenty-five Rev. Young was very brave To travel such a distance to an unknown place. This young man ministered to us for years I’m told He preached to all his charges and served the young and old A great love he had for the people of Cayman He knew from the time he landed that Cayman was grand. Whilst ministering here he met the love of his life

iThought

A beautiful Caymanian girl whom he took as his wife After several years of service they left the Cayman Islands Living and serving in Jamaica and other distant land. He loved writing and was editor of the Church’s monthly paper He was also appointed to Synod as their Moderator. Robert Young so helpful and sympathetic to everyone Will always be remembered for a job well done. So this church stands as a memorial to Robert Young today If he could see it, I wonder what he’d say? Five years after his passing it was dedicated And fifty years later Robert Young’s name is still appreciated.

Do not shrink from visiting the sick; in this way you will make yourself loved. Ecclesiasticus 7:35

Crisis centre donation Higgs & Johnson gladly donated to the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre when they announced plans to renovate the Safe Shelter Facility (the “Centre”). Established in 2003, the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre is the Cayman Islands’ first and only safe shelter for women and their children who are victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. While access to safe and abuse-free shelter is the Centre’s main objective,

iLocal

they also believe that the Centre should be comfortable, uplifting and a place for hope, inspiration and

healing. With that in mind, Higgs & Johnson’s donation will assist in the purchase of artwork for the shelter. Gina Berry, Partner at Higgs & Johnson commented, “We are pleased to support such a great cause and hope that the artwork selected will achieve the Centre’s goal of providing light and optimism in the lives of Cayman’s abused women and children.”

Man jailed after first date terror ride Paul Kennedy

paul.kennedy@ieyenews.com

A man has been jailed for four years after a “first date” ended with him kidnapping the girl and taking her on a 45 minutes terror ride. Colleen Cummings spent the evening “hanging out” with Murphy Powell after arranging the date last January. The pair visited a number of bars together but after Ms Cummings refused to have sex with Powell his mood changed and he refused to let her out of the car. Judge Charles Quin told the Grand Court: “The complainant said she was in ‘total shock’ and became afraid for her safety because the defendant’s driving had become erratic. In that he was speeding and turning the vehicle very quickly.” As he was speeding along South Sound, the court heard, he kept telling her: “Put out or get out”. Every time Ms Cummings asked to get out of the Ford truck Powell just hit the accelerator and drove faster. Fearing for her safety, Ms Cummings dialed 911 on her cell phone and engaged Powell in conversation – trying to give information to the police of her location. Judge Quin said: “The defendant kept on driving and told the complainant that if she wanted to leave she would have to jump. “As they passed Bodden Town the to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

complainant saw three or four police cars and asked 911 why they were not coming to help. The complainant also noticed that a marked police car had passed her. “The defendant continued to drive in a dangerous manner. He drove to High Rock Road and turned into it. At this stage the complainant was near to tears and described herself as being distraught and hopeless. “It is clear from both the recording and the transcript that the complainant was very concerned about why the defendant was taking her to the quarry on High Road Road. The complainant said she began to think about being killed or raped when she realised he had driven her down to the quarry.” Eventually they drove off and when passing another police car, Powell sped up to approximately 90mph. The police followed the truck and tried to stop it, even setting up a road block near Midland Acres. When he slowed down near to Savannah Countryside Shopping Village Ms Cummings took the opportunity to jump out of the vehicle and Powell sped off. When police took her back to her car Ms Cummings received a call from Powell who asked her: “So you are not going to go out with me again or what?” He could then be heard laughing. Although he wasn’t caught on the night, Powell eventually gave himself

up to police and admitted he had driven the car fast and “become vexed” when she refused to have sex with him. In September he pleaded guilty to wrongful confinement and also admitted dangerous driving. Judge Quin told him he had taken into account his guilty plea, did not subject the complainant to any physical violence or abuse and had since started another relationship and had a child. Judge Quin said: “It is clear from the transcript that the complainant was frightened out of her wits.” Powell was jailed for two and a half years for wrongful confinement and 18 months for dangerous driving to run consecutively. He was also banned from driving for two years on his release from prison.

Premier Bush with Minister for Overseas Territories Henry Bellingham

Tad Stoner tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

Premier McKeeva Bush has told the British government that Cayman would never again “hold out the begging bowl” because of overspending, instead promising to rely on private-sector investment for infrastructure projects. Signing the Framework for Fiscal Responsibility this week in London, Mr Bush blamed “the last government of the Cayman islands” for starting “the debt spiral” that had precipitated creation of the Framework, formally restricting both borrowing and spending. “We have discussed on many occasions how the last Cayman Islands Government committed the country to future massive borrowing to pay for grant capital projects for which they had no money,” he told Minister for Overseas Territories Henry Bellingham and other top officials. “They went ahead and mishandled the contracts for projects for schools, an admin block and roads costing to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

over hundreds of million of dollars knowing full well that a future generation would have to pay for them. In one year they left an $81 million fiscal deficit. “My government did not cause the problem,” he said, “but depend on it, my government will solve it,” saying he would “abolish the deficit for the future”. Mr Bush did not limit criticism to his People’s Progressive Movement predecessors, but also assailed his UK government hosts, pointing out its fiscal failures, and rejecting previous attacks on Cayman’s financialservices industry, saying they were also vital to Britain “We can all see what is happening in Europe when governments spend more than their people earn,” he told the Wednesday meeting, hinting that Cayman officials would not accept earlier UK demands for taxation. “The Cayman Islands will now live within its means, even though we agree that there will be tough choices to make,” he told Mr Bellingham. “When we come knocking on your

door in future, Minister, it will be to point out that our financial services are vital to investment in the UK economy,” and that “it will be to point out that low-tax economies like ours, are the key to growth and prosperity.” Without naming the proposed Dart Realty-government $1.2 billion ForCayman Investment Alliance, the nascent Enterpise City or infrastructure giant China Harbour Engineering Company, Mr Bush told the group that financing was unlikely any longer to come from government. “But now with your support for divestment and encouragement of prudent involvement of the private sector to fund infrastructure projects, coupled with my abhorrence of borrowing, we can move forward with these projects in an open, transparent and competitive way.” The Cayman Islands, he said “can go forward to achieve a fiscal surplus and restore our reputation for sound financial management once again. Our mutual agreement to transitional arrangements is most helpful to Cayman.”

I appreciate how the Cayman Islands Cancer Society’s staff care for my wife who is a cancer survivor. I have a lot of respect for those people because they treat everyone with respect. They truly care for cancer patients. I pray that the Lord will give them His blessings and the strength to carry on the good work that they are doing. Boxing is making headlines here

Georgina Wilcox georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com

Boxing is very much in the news here in Cayman. We have an experienced champion, Charles “Killa” Whittaker – ranked #2 in the World and promised a shot at a World Title in the Middleweight division. We also have a young man who is just beginning his professional boxing career, Peter “Lightning” Lewison, ranked #433. Lightning fights Sat. (26) at Camana Bay and most people reading this will have known the result. Both their stories of how they turned to boxing are almost mirror images. They both fought and ran foul of the law in their early teens. A friend of mine (I’ll call him “Stone”) in the USA was a boxer and his early story is very similar. This is what Stone told me. “Boxing is a very demanding sport that can bring great rewards to someone that gives it everything that they have and more. If you can stick with boxing, then you will learn many very important life skills that will help you to be a better person. Also you can make a great career out of boxing, and might even become rich and famous. However if the proper respect and effort is not given, then the sport can eat you up, and spit you back out again. I started my boxing career in the Junior Golden Gloves in my city. I believe that the lessons I was taught during this time have helped to shape me into the man that I have become today.

Charles “Killa” Whittaker (Photo by Kelly Robyn Photograph) “During my experience in Junior Golden Gloves, I was not the best boxer of the group, but I worked hard everyday to get better and become the best boxer that I could. Boxing kept me away from drugs, gangs, and many other bad influences that some of my friends fell into during this time. I also believe that the Golden Gloves taught me the value of determination and hard work. As a boxer you can easily see what training and hard work can do for you in life. I believe that I have carried this throughout my life, and I try to let that hard work and determination translate into other things in my life. “You should definitely try to get your kids started in boxing when they are young, because it will keep them out of trouble, and also help them learn the skills that will make them leaders for the rest of their life. Also if your child is very good then they might even be able to make boxing into a very lucrative career. Boxing will also help kids learn how to stand up for themselves, and give them confidence that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives. I really enjoyed my time in boxing, and am very appreciative of the lessons I learned while I was boxing.” I fully endorse what Stone said and I would ‘fight’ (not physically) anyone who says it should be banned because it is brutal, causes death and brain damage, appeals to the worst and violent parts of human nature, exploits both young men

and women, is the most dangerous sport, and makes violence look ‘cool.’ There are no statistics proving boxing has more injuries than any other physical (contact) sport. All sport is about testing the human body and reactions against others. Humans are naturally aggressive animals. Those in charge of boxing work hard to make it as safe as possible. All sports persons can be exploited. It channels a normally aggressive person into putting his energy into a controlled environment. I firmly believe if boxing is banned it would drive it ‘underground’ into remote barns and similar places. Men want to fight and people would still pay them (and bet) to watch them do it. It would then be uncontrolled with bare fists being used and fighting carrying on indefinitely until someone is knocked out and/or maimed. No doctors would be present to stop a fight if one of the persons suffers a cut near the eyes. Has banning drugs, underage drinking, cock fighting, etc. stopped people doing this? No it hasn’t. And look at the cost to society in trying to police and prosecute this. Boxing is much safer when it is legal and regulated. So good luck to Killa and to Lightning. Both of you are role models to our teenagers. Let’s get our youth into boxing and not brandishing weapons, robbing and/or becoming members of gangs. Boxing is one sport that might appeal to them.

We’ve nothing to fear says Kenny Paul Kennedy paul.kennedy@ieyenews.com

KENNY DALGLISH insists Liverpool FC have no reason to fear the visit of high-flying Manchester City to Anfield on Sunday because they have the quality to cause the Premier League leaders problems. Roberto Mancini’s side have enjoyed a stunning start to the campaign with 11 wins and a draw in their opening 12 games. City’s haul of 42 goals at this stage of the season is the best by a top flight club for half a century. However, City haven’t won at Anfield since 2003 and Dalglish believes on the back of the Reds’ victory at Chelsea they are capable of extending their unbeaten run to 10 games. “We’ll decide what is best for us and let them worry about us more than we worry about them,” Dalglish said. “But at the same time we respect and appreciate how good City are. “We know our players, how they can play and their attributes. They are more important than anyone we are playing against. “We’ll make sure we get ourselves right. If we do things right then we will give anyone a difficult game. “We know what our individual strengths are and when we need to use those strengths. If we make the right decisions more often than the wrong ones then there will be a lot of smiling faces.” Dalglish has some tough selection decisions to make ahead of Sunday’s showdown.

Craig Bellamy, Maxi Rodriguez and Dirk Kuyt will be hoping to keep their places after replacing summer signings Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing in the side which beat Chelsea last weekend. Skipper Steven Gerrard is still unavailable as he continues his recovery from an ankle infection but the manager has no other injury concerns and competition for places is tough. “We do whatever we think is necessary for the team,” Dalglish said. “We pick the team which is best on any particular day against any particular team. “If we hadn’t have won last weekend it would have been a bad side. If you win, people say it was a good decision. We don’t have hindsight to work with. The quality in the squad is very good. At the end of the day, it is hard for the ones who don’t play. It is hard to keep them motivated and to keep them going. That is understandable. “If they come in with really good attitudes when they are left out, it is helpful to everyone.

“Certainly the 11 that started at Chelsea did very well. It was great for the three boys that came on as well. They have only been in the door two minutes. For them to come in with positive attitudes has shown their attitude and determination. “If they are not committed to playing, it is not going to be my problem – it is going to be their problem. We will go and get people who are determined to play. “It is not pleasant but it is understandable that there is disappointment if you are not playing every game. But it is a long season and everyone is going to be given their chance.” Elsewhere, Manchester United travel to Newcastle and under-fire Chelsea boss Andres Villa-Boas will hope to return to winning ways at home to Wolves. Stoke play Blackburn and Everton visit Bolton. Norwich and Sunderland host QPR and Wigan while Tottenham travel to West Brom and Fulham play Arsenal. On Sunday Swansea welcome Aston Villa to south Wales.

Russian wanted by Lithuania arrested in London VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) — A Russian businessman who owns Portsmouth Football Club and has tried to invest in cash-strapped car maker Saab has been arrested in London in connection with a money laundering probe that has rocked Lithuania and Latvia, officials said Friday. Vladimir Antonov, 36, and a Lithuanian partner, Raimondas Baranauskas, 53, were detained Thursday on an arrest warrant issued by investigators probing alleged to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

fraud and money laundering at his banks in the Baltic states, Lithuanian prosecutor Tomas Krusna told reporters. The Bank of Lithuania said late Thursday that his bank there, Snoras Bank, will be liquidated, calling it the best solution for country’s financial system and economy, which were jolted after the bank was nationalized and its operations halted. Lithuanian regulators claim that hundreds of millions of euros were

siphoned from Snoras, the country’s fifth-largest financial institution, while Latvian authorities have said that similar asset-stripping took place on a massive scale at Latvija Krajbanka, a subsidiary bank controlled by Snoras. Lithuanian bank chief Vitas Vasiliauskas said the government was liquidating the bank rather than waste taxpayers’ money trying to help “a plane that won’t fly.” “There is no other way to solve this situation,” he said.

John Doak Architecture Iguanas flying high The John Doak Architecture Iguanas secured the Heineken Charity Shield for the first time on with a hard fought 23-5 win over the Krys Global Buccaneers. Both teams had played for the shield once before against the DHL Cayman Storm but neither had any previous success as the Storm have kept a firm grip on the trophy since its inception. However, having finished 3rd in the domestic league competition last year the DHL Storm were unable to earn the opportunity to retain the Shield for a 3rd consecutive season. The Iguanas, current holders of the Alex Alexander Memorial League Trophy and the Buccaneers, current holders of the Waterford Knockout Vase kicked off in the afternoon having enjoyed a fiery encounter earlier in the day when the DHL Storm took on the Queensgate Pigs Trotters in the new “Heineken Wooden Spoon” competition. The high-scoring fixture, tabled to be a friendly, was anything but as tempers flared on more than one occasion. The Pigs Trotters, looking to overturn last years lacklustre season had moments of brilliance with good offloading in the tackle and strong backline running testing the DHL Storm defence but it was again the individual brilliance of DHL Storm stalwart Vanassio Tokotokovanua

who kept the scoreboard ticking over in favour of his team with the help of Josh Clarke, Michael Sumares and newly re-positioned Storm fly-half Keswick Wright. The final score of 47-33 in favour of the Storm was not the one sided affair some expected against the Pigs Trotters and surely announces the Pigs as a team with real ambition to contend for silver-wear this domestic XV’s season. and Buccaneers faced off in the knowledge that the game would be a test of endurance as neither team was playing with a subs bench and players normally suffer from a lack of fitness early in the season and whereas the Buccaneers had won the A.R. Scott 10’s competition and a handful of the Buccaneers players including Dan Bond and Phil “Boo” Fourie had recently returned from National 7’s success in Barbados the vast majority of the Iguanas had not played competitive rugby in a year. Regardless, the Iguanas preparation for the game clearly paid off and the likes of Chris Palmer and Jon Murphy found little of their usual success against an Iguana backline that held strong and marched into the half time break with a 10-0 lead thanks to a Johnny Doak penalty and a Tom Mann converted try. Whilst the Buccaneers finally got on the score board thanks to a James Gibb try the Iguanas managed more points in the 2nd half with an Etienne Duvenage converted try and 2 more penalty kicks to bring up the final 23-5 win and the first trophy awarded of the 2011-2012 domestic season

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Tony Romo doesn’t care about winning in style. He’s leading the Dallas Cowboys to victories, and that’s all that matters. Romo overcame a pair of early interceptions by throwing two touchdown passes to Laurent Robinson and rookie Dan Bailey made a 28-yard field goal as time expired, giving the Dallas Cowboys a 20-19 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Thursday. The Cowboys (7-4) were never able to grab control, but also never trailed by more than six points. The defense gave up scores on four straight series, but limited the damage because three of those were field goals. They finally got a stop with Dallas trailing 19-17. Romo took over on his 36-yard line with 2:59 left. He completed a few passes, then rookie DeMarco Murray kept grinding out yards and winding down the clock to set up Bailey’s winner. “We did enough to give ourselves a chance to win the game,” Dallas coach Jason Garrett said. This was the second straight game that Bailey ended with a field goal, and the fourth time he’s done it this season. The kick was his 26th straight made field goal, matching the second-best in club history. It also was a measure of redemption for Cowboys fans, coming 18 years after the Dolphins won a Thanksgiving game on a last-second field goal following Leon Lett’s memorable gaffe on a snowy afternoon.
