Aunt Julia’s birthday party

More than 150 friends, family members and well-wishers came to celebrate “Aunt” Julia Hydes’ 103rd Birthday with a special party at the Harquail theatre.

Five generations of the Hydes family were represented at the party and everyone joined in singing “Happy Birthday,” to Aunt Julia.

A special guest was Aunt Julia’s oldest child, Francis, who was visiting from abroad.

Aunt Julia is widely regarded as a Cayman music culture icon. She famous for playing her drum and singing the songs handed down to her, each one telling a story from Cayman’s past. At the party she played her drum and sang gospel songs for her birthday guests, and was joined by the Barnett

Family musical ensemble. At one stage, Edroy Hydes one of Aunt Julia’s children, joined in with singing a few old favorites too.

Loxley Banks who helped organise the party, said: “She’s been a friend of mine all my life. She’s wonderful, because she epitomises thankfulness, and gives thanks constantly to the Lord above for anything she receives,” he said.

Aunt Julia’s knowledge of old-time Cayman music is very extensive, and each song has a story behind it, a gem of Cayman’s nearly-forgotten history.

Her style exemplifies the uniqueness of local music- an intricate blend of traditional European and American popular songs and folk melodies, mixed with African rhythms beaten out on the drum. She uses two tones, from both the side of the drum and

the centre of the drum in alternation, which has its roots in African call-andanswer rhythm.

Julia was born on January 25, 1909, in West Bay where she still lives. She was the youngest of 12 children, Like many young Caymanian women growing up at that time, she helped her mother and other relatives with the traditional art of cutting silver thatch leaves, drying and preparing them, and then plaiting them into strong rope, and thatch baskets.

She took to the drum as soon as it was introduced to her by her cousin, fiddler Leighton “Duxie” Ebanks. She recalled that when she first held the guavawood sticks, she felt “A great sense of Joy. My love for music has continued ever since. I never had any lessons, I just watched, paid attention and made up my own style of drumming.”

Air arrivals surpass projections

Welcoming 309,091 stay-over visitors for 2011, the Cayman Islands has outperformed its projected arrival figure of 302,000 visitors to record a bumper year for tourist arrivals.

The 309,000 stay-over visitor figure represents a 7.2 per cent increase over the 2010 performance and is the best stay-over visitor arrival figure the Cayman Islands has recorded in 10 years.

The month of December 2011 showed the best stay-over visitor arrival figures for any December since the year 2000 and with 33,353 visitors landing on Cayman’s shores, represented a 6.3 per cent increase over the arrival figure of 31,391 for December 2010.

Announcing this positive development at the Cayman Business Outlook forum on Thursday, 19 January, Premier McKeeva Bush, who is also Minister for Finance, Tourism and Development, noted that the latest figures point to a continuation of

the positive trending that stay-over arrivals have been showing for 16 months in a row.

“Stay-over tourism arrivals have also been positive for 26 months out of the last 28. So out of the last two years and four months we have been positive for two years and two months, when many other destinations have actually had negative arrival figures.

Unfortunately our Cruise arrivals for the month of December have continued to fall, registering a 9.2% decline over December 2010 and an overall 12.3% decline year to date.”

Comparing the Cayman Islands’ performance with other Caribbean destinations, the Premier noted that out of 24 countries that report their arrival statistics only four who reported through September 2011 had recorded arrival increases greater than seven per cent and the Cayman Islands’ level of improvement had been surpassed only by Cuba and Curacao.

“We can be justly proud of these

positive numbers, which are the result of the plans and strategies that this government has been putting in place - both in response to the continuing effects of the global recession, as well as from our own forward-thinking and longterm strategic approach to this very important sector,” Mr. Bush noted.

He commended the Department of Tourism and the Islands’ private sector partners for being “unified, innovative and consistent with their efforts” to promote the destination.

“The Cayman Islands is regarded as a premiere destination of choice, which is evidenced not just by our growing numbers but by the visitor acclaim we have received, including being named as the number one destination in the Caribbean by TripAdvisor travellers. BNY Mellon opens BNY Mellon has opened its first wealth management office in the Cayman Islands as part of an effort to expand the firm’s global capabilities to serve international clients, the wealth manager announced Wednesday.

The firm has always had international clients in the Cayman Islands but for the past 30 years they were served through local lawyers, accountants and other local partners, Susan Rivers, a company spokesperson said.

“We currently serve a sizable number of family offices and ultra high-net-worth individuals with complex transactional needs that can be served by our Cayman location,” Peter Moertl, head of BNY Mellon’s International Wealth Management group, said in statement.

In addition to its new office in the Cayman Islands, the group has offices in New York, London, Hong Kong and a presence in Toronto.

The group focuses on the wealth and investment planning, trust and estate planning and private banking needs of high-net-worth clients around the globe, BNY Mellon said.

Patrizia Bruzio, vice president for International Wealth Management Wealth Advisory Services and general manager and director of the BNY Mellon Trust Company (Cayman) Ltd., will head up the office, which is located in Grand Cayman in Camana Bay, one of the island’s newest office, retail and entertainment complexes.

BNY Mellon Wealth Management has about $168 billion in private client assets and an international network of offices.

Continued from front page The revenue projections are based on Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) annual guarantees of 1.2 million passengers each year, and an estimated per-head landing fee of $17.50, yielding a $21 million annual total.

The figures do not, however, account for average retail expenditure of $95 per passenger. Coupled with FCCA guarantees, tourist spending could reach $114 million per year, divided among outlets both in the Chinese-built “upland” section of the port, extant George Town shops and transport.

The figures come in the wake of estimates by George Town MLA and chief negotiator with Beijingbased international infrastructure giant China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) Ellio Solomon, who said the “framework agreement” with the company, now in late stages of negotiation, provided for landing fees similar to the current $16.76 and a 25-year term for the Chinese to earn a return on investment.

The FCAA guarantees are roughly equal to 2011 arrivals, announced yesterday by the Department of Tourism, which reported a December figure of nearly 160,000 cruise passengers -- down 9.2% on last December -- and an annual figure of 1.4 million, 12.3 % less that 2010’s 1.59 million.

Mr Solomon rejected Wednesday’s leak of a 20 April, 2011 KPMG report comparing plans by previous port contractor Florida-based GLF with CHEC. The five-page document, in response to a Port Authority request, ultimately concludes that insufficient information prevents a proper assessment, but raises warning flags about Chinese intentions.

The report suggests CHEC might seek a $35 passenger-landing fee, a figure Mr Solomon described simply as “irresponsible”.

“There is no shred of evidence for that. Where does that come from?” he asked, saying the Port Authority had not met CHEC by 20 April last year, only six days after Premier McKeeva Bush terminated GLF, saying the company, a subsidiary of Italian builder Grandi Lavori Fincosit, lacked adequate financing.

Aware of the disincentive posed by

a $35 passenger fee, Mr Solomon said it “had absolutely no bearing on, is not relevant to, the negotiations”.

While not denying landing fees could rise, he said, however, they were unlikely to increase greatly, and were part of ongoing talks: “I don’t really want to get into it, but we do not want to raise [the fees] too much. They will definitely be less that the $18-plus” proposed by GLF. The outline agreement, Mr Solomon said, was that CHEC would collect all port revenues, including rentals in the retail portion of the pier, for 25 years, repaying loans and gaining a negotiated profit. During the next 24 years, revenues would be split with the Cayman Islands, China gaining 60%.

Final agreement was still between two weeks and three weeks distant, Mr Solomon said, and was careful when asked if the 24-year revenuesharing period might be reduced.

“We are in the process of negotiation and we have some preliminary notion of where we are, but KPMG is crunching the numbers and until we have a final design [of the port], we don’t know what the final cost will be,” he said.

“The 49 years is a stake in the ground, and KPMG will evaluate not only the dollar costs, but the risks and benefits involved.”

Acting Deputy Governor appoints three new Chief Officers

The Acting Deputy Governor, Mr. Franz Manderson is pleased to announce the recruitment of Mr. Stran Bodden, Mr. Eric Bush and Mr. Alan Jones, as Chief Officers.

Mr. Bodden will take over, as Chief Officer in the Ministry of Finance, Development & Tourism, dealing with tourism and development, replacing Carson Ebanks who recently retired and Leonard Dilbert who has been acting over the past few months.

Mr. Bush will take over, as Chief Officer for the Portfolio of Internal and External Affairs, replacing Mr. Manderson who takes over the role of Deputy Governor.

Mr Jones will take over, as Chief Officer of the Ministry of District Administration, Works, Lands and Agriculture, replacing Mr. Kearney Gomez who will be retiring on the 31 January. They will take up their positions on 1 February 2012.

The Acting Deputy Governor instituted a new recruitment process for this exercise, using an assessment centre approach, he established the essential competencies required for the post of Chief Officer and these were tested by on line assessments a written exam and an interview.

Fifty one persons applied for the three posts and, as part of an open recruitment process a twelve candidates were shortlisted.

All candidates were subjected to a day of tests and assessments. The Portfolio of the Civil Service administered the online tests that assessed cognitive ability, emotional intelligence and learning agility. In addition the candidates undertook an examination which consisted of three separate scenarios that had to be completed in a defined period; these tasks reflected what would actually be expected of a Chief Officer.

Mr. Manderson said “I was exposed to the assessment centre process during my recent visit to the United Kingdom and decided to introduce a similar model in Cayman. Stran Bodden has a MA in Economics and a BSc in Social Science Education.

He started his career in Government as an Economist in the Cayman Islands Economics & Statistics Office in 1999 was promoted to Senior Statistician, in 2004 and then became the Acting Director in 2005. He moved into the Ministry of Education, Training, Employment, Youth, Sports and Culture in 2006 as Deputy Chief Officer and moved to the Ministry of Health, Environment, Youth, Sports and Culture in 2009 as Deputy Chief Officer Mr. Bodden said “I am excited about being given the opportunity to serve as Chief Officer and I would like to thank God, my family, and my close friends that have supported me over the years.

In taking up this new post, I am looking forward to applying the knowledge and experience that I have gained in the civil service in order to deliver services required in these demanding times”.

Eric Bush has a BA in Psychology; he joined the Royal Cayman Islands Police Force, 1999 and after a spell in the private sector joined, Cayman Airways in 2006 as a Senior Manager, Human Resources, he joined Portfolio of Internal and External Affairs in 2007 as Deputy Chief Officer where he has oversight of the Prison, Police and Immigration.

Mr. Bush said “I am honoured to be entrusted with this new responsibility.

Having worked in the Portfolio for the last five years has allowed me to work with a very talented and hard working group of individuals. As the Chief Officer, I look forward to building on the strong foundation laid by both Mr. Donovan Ebanks and Mr. Franz Manderson.” Alan Jones, MRICS, has a BSc in Urban Estate Surveying, joined the Cayman Islands Lands and Survey Dept as an Assistant Lands Officer in 1989 was promoted to Chief Valuation Officer in 1998 and became Director in 2004. Building collapses in centre of Rio de Janeiro RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — A multistory building collapsed in Rio’s centre Wednesday evening, leaving rubble strewn over a wide area but confusion about the number of possible victims and the cause.

Thick layers of debris covered cars and motorcycles. A neighbouring building sustained serious damage, and television showed at least two people on its roof apparently awaiting help from firefighters.

There were differing reports about possible deaths.

A spokeswoman from the city’s Civil Defense department said two people were confirmed dead, but officials

from City Hall and the municipal health department later disputed that, saying no deaths had been confirmed by early Thursday. It was not clear how many people were injured.

There was a strong smell of natural gas in the area, but Rio’s mayor said there were doubts that a gas leak caused the accident.

“There apparently was not an explosion. The collapse occurred because of structural damages,” he said. “I don’t think there was a gas leak.” Witnesses had said they heard a loud explosion-like sound just before the building collapsed, and a strong odor of gas hung over the scene.

It was not immediately clear how big the damaged buildings were. The one nearly destroyed was at least five stories high. It sat near Rio’s historic Teatro Municipal and the Fine Arts Museum, both of which appeared undamaged.

Forklift driver rewarded in homeless killings case ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Donny Hopkins was buying his wife cigarettes at a drug store when a man burst inside and screamed the unbelievable: A serial killer was savagely stabbing a man in the parking lot.

Hopkins, who knew a killer was stalking homeless men, bolted from the store to find a man repeatedly plunging a knife into a Vietnam veteran behind a Carl’s Jr. restaurant.

“I’m yelling as loud as I can, ‘Hey, stop!’ at the top of my lungs. He just kept going and kept going,” Hopkins told The Associated Press on Wednesday as he recounted the Jan. 13 attack.

Fumbling to dial 911 on his cellphone, Hopkins chased the suspect across the Anaheim strip mall and into a mobile home park, where police eventually collared a blood-covered suspect.

Hopkins, a 32-year-old forklift driver, was hailed a hero Wednesday and given a $5,000 reward for his role in the capture of Itzcoatl Ocampo, a former Marine.

Ocampo, 23, an Iraq war veteran from Yorba Linda, has been charged with murdering four homeless men in Orange County over nearly a month. Police fanned out across the county better known as the home to Disneyland and multi-million dollar

beachfront homes to urge the homeless to be careful and seek shelter indoors.

Hopkins received the check at a news conference outside the fast-food restaurant where 64-year-old victim John Berry is remembered.

Lohan sued by pedestrian allegedly struck by star LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lindsay Lohan’s bad luck with cars continues after a woman who claims she was struck by the actress’ sports car sued over her injuries Wednesday.

Nubia Del Carmen Preza claims she was struck by Lohan’s Maserati while walking through a West Hollywood intersection in September 2010.

Preza’s lawsuit states she has suffered “disabling and serious personal injuries, pain, suffering and anguish” and that she is seeking damages for all her medical expenses and lost time at work. It is the second lawsuit filed against Lohan this month involving an automobile mishap. A paparazzo sued Lohan Jan. 10, claiming that he was struck in January 2010 by a vehicle in which Lohan was riding. Grigor Balyan claims he was trying to shoot pictures of the actress in Hollywood when he was hit. Preza’s lawsuit states Lohan was driving when she was hit on the afternoon of Sept. 1, 2010, at an intersection just south of the Sunset Strip. At the time, Lohan lived near the intersection. Lohan’s spokesman Steve Honig said neither Lohan nor her attorneys had been served with the lawsuit and could not comment on it.

The bad side of party politics. Immigration changes

What an injustice was done Tuesday evening (24) when two members of the UDP (United Democratic Party) were missing WOL! What did they miss? A meeting called by the Coalition to Keep BT Dump Free at the Bodden Town Civic Centre. The missing members are two of the three elected MLA’s for Bodden Town and they were invited. Hon. Mark Scotland (Minister of Health, Environment, Youth, Sports and Culture) and Dwayne Seymour stayed away resulting in much anger from their very own constituents. The only Bodden Town MLA who was present was PPM (People’s Progressive Movement) Anthony Eden who also partly hosted the meeting with other leaders of the coalition.

Vincent Frederick, a coalition leader, said the movement to oppose the dump relocation was not political. They were against the Government’s proposal to move the landfill to Bodden Town and despite repeated requests from the coalition Scotland and Seymour were not prepared to come and answer the people’s questions.

I can certainly understand why the two MLA’s would not want to attend. They would have had to face an angry crowd. It would have felt like Daniel going into the Lions Den. But didn’t Daniel return unscathed? Aren’t MLA’s elected to serve their various Districts whom elected them.

They are servants of their Districts. Yes, they belong to a party but it wasn’t their party who elected them it was their constituents! Haven’t we all faced at some time in our lives a meeting we would have liked to avoid? A meeting where we would be questioned and our answers would not be what the questioner and listeners would want to hear?

That is life and that is why MLA’s get paid.

The reason why Scotland and Seymour went AWOL was because they are members of a party and it was a party decision. It was not their own making. They did not put their Bodden Town District constituents first; they in fact dumped them like the trash the coalition is opposing on

This is the bad side of having political parties and it was a big mistake by these two MLA’s.

There are some important changes being addressed to the immigration law that include making it easier for the grandchildren of Caymanians living overseas to claim status and the introduction of a visitors work visa.

These changes, say Government, are needed to: “promote inward investment by offering residency to the wealthy, assist local businesses by introducing streamlined entry procedures and address anomalies in relation to caregivers’ certificates.”

At the next LA it is presumed the premier Hon. McKeeva Bush will bring amendments that will see the number of people who can sit as tribunal chairs increased from two to five and the membership from 12 people to an undefined panel of persons. However, the quorum has been reduced from five to only two people plus the chair, leaving as few as three people to have the final say on disputed immigration decisions.

North Side MLA. Ezzard Miller, has said government has removed the requirement to take minutes at tribunals, which “could have serious implications especially for future freedom of information requests by people affected by closed door decisions.”

I can certainly agree with him when he said this was preposterous. “You must have a record for an appeals process when a decision made by the immigration board could be reversed by as little as two people,” he said. “Not to have a record of the what, when and why of that decision is an outrage.”

I can support some of the proposed amendments but there is always some other things added that are put in in the hope people will only see the good. Mr. Miller has very sharp eyes.

Jamaica launches emergency jobs initiative KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Jamaica’s month-old government on Wednesday launched the first phase of an emergency jobs programme that was the centerpiece of its winning election campaign.

The government formed by the People’s National Party said some 700 jobless people will be hired to clear vegetation and trash in the short- and medium-term along a northern coastal highway in the first phase of the Jamaica Emergency Employment Program.

Governing party officials have not announced how many other jobs will be created in following phases of the initiative. But the party has said its jobcreating plan will be developed around agricultural industries, manufacturing, communications, small business development, and cultural and community development projects.

Local human rights group “Jamaicans for Justice” said it is concerned that the governing party will disproportionately employ its partisans since members of parliament will choose the islanders who work under the initiative.

Historically, most poor Jamaicans have affiliated themselves with a party, relying on political patronage for jobs, houses and land.

“This approach of MPs deciding who gets work on the basis of party affiliation has contributed to the wastage of tax payer’s money over many decades and divided us along tribal political lines. It is completely unacceptable and must be stopped,” the rights group said in a statement.

Civic groups are also calling on the debt-burdened government to explain how much money will be needed for the jobs initiative, citing the opposition’s disclosure that the initial phase will be funded by a loan the previous government arranged with the Inter-American Development Bank last year.

Opposition officials contend the emergency employment plan will not meaningfully decrease the official 12.8 percent unemployment rate.

During her inaugural speech earlier this month, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller said her administration will use “state resources” to stimulate employment.

The 66-year-old Simpson Miller’s People’s National Party won 42 seats in Jamaica’s 63-seat Parliament in the Dec. 29 national election.

Last week, Simpson Miller called on the private sector to hire at least one qualified, jobless islander under another job-creating initative she dubbed Jamaica Employ. She estimated some 40,000 people could resume working if businesses comply.

Nissan announces new $2 billion plant in Mexico MEXICO CITY (AP) — Nissan Motor Co. announced Wednesday it is investing $2 billion to build a new manufacturing plant in Mexico. It will be the Japanese company’s third in the country, helping it serve markets throughout the Americas.

Construction of the plant in the northern state of Aguascalientes will begin this summer and production should start by the end of next year, according to a company statement.

It said an industrial park for supplier companies also will be built.

The plant is projected to have the capacity to produce 175,000 vehicles a year, focusing on “B’’ platform vehicles.

Those include the Versa, March and Tiida. The company says that will give Nissan the ability to produce 1 million

cars a year in Mexico in the midterm.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon called the plant “one of the most important automative investments that we’ve received.”

Nissan already has two manufacturing centers in Mexico. A plant in Cuernavaca 50 miles (85 kilometers) south of Mexico City, produces small cars and light trucks, while an existing plant in Aguascalientes builds small cars for the Mexican, U.S. and Latin American markets.

Building another plant in Aguascalientes “will allow Nissan’s existing and future operations to share critical resources,” it said.

Nissan manufactured more than 600,000 vehicles in Mexico last year, and it reported selling 1.56 million

vehicles throughout the Americas, giving it a 7 percent market share for the hemisphere.

Nissan topped sales in Mexico last year with more than 224,000 vehicles, nearly 25 percent of the market.

Nissan said it expects to employ 3,000 workers, raising the company’s total workforce in Mexico to 13,500.

It projects the new plant will create 9,000 other jobs indirectly.

The company’s production in Mexico includes the March, Sentra, Versa, Tiida autos, as well as the aging but still popular Tsuru model widely used as a taxi. It also produces NP300 light trucks. Philippines disarms villagers in killing probe MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine police disarmed villagers on a southern island and will test their weapons to determine whether they were used to massacre 15 fishermen at sea in a suspected feud over lucrative fishing grounds, officials said Wednesday.

The lone survivor, who was seriously wounded, told investigators that the gunmen ordered the victims to line up on their boats like a firing squad before opening fire.

Another fisherman who escaped the shooting but returned hours later described the grisly scene of bloodied bodies and bulletriddled boats sinking. “They were merciless,” Jessie Boy Loquez said.

“They fired at the heads.”

Regional police officer Felicisimo Khu said only four bodies have been recovered from the sea and the other 11 are missing and presumed dead. Loquez said the four recovered bodies did not sink or float away because the wounded survivor had managed to tie up their legs.

Basilan provincial military commander Col. Ricardo Visaya said the initial investigation indicated that the killing was triggered by a conflict over turf rights in the fishing ground.

Law enforcement in the area is weak, and deadly feuds fueled by business and political rivalry are rampant. Businesses often pay protection money to armed groups and hire private guards.

Residents of Sibago Island and their confiscated guns will be tested to determine if they fired the weapons in Monday’s attack on a group of rival fishermen, Khu said. He said no suspects have been named.

Visaya said the wounded survivor told investigators that the gunmen approached on three speedboats and ordered the fishermen to line up on their own boats before they were shot.

Visaya said that the gunmen resembled “a firing squad,” and that some of the victims jumped into the sea as they were fired upon.

escaped because they were in two small motorized outriggers away from the three main fishing vessels when the gunmen approached, Loquez told The Associated Press by phone from Zamboanga del Sur province north of Basilan.

Loquez said they had been fishing for tuna in the area for about 24 hours when his companion saw the gunmen, who were armed with M16 rifles. The pair fled; Loquez said they did not witness the shooting or hear the shots because of the noise from

their engines.

He said they waited a few hours, until mid-afternoon Monday, before going back to the larger vessels, and saw two of them sunk after being peppered with bullets.

He said they brought the remains of the four fishermen to their hometown of San Pablo in Zamboanga del Sur province by midday Tuesday.

The 26-year-old, who got married less than a year ago, said he will stop fishing. “I will go back to planting sugar cane,” he said.

McField has worked at the Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing for the past 23 years. She started on the counter, gradually earning a promotion to supervisor.

The poetry revival I am talking about is not the general name given to a loose movement in Britain that took place in the 1960’s and 70’s. This was a modernist-inspired reaction to the Movement’s more conservative approach to British poetry. I am talking about the revival in the increased purchase of poetry books anthologies and works by individual poets - in the new and secondhand book markets.

Solar storm sparks dazzling northern

STOCKHOLM (AP) — A storm from the broiling sun turned the chilly northernmost skies of Earth into an ever-changing and awe-provoking art show of northern lights on Tuesday.

Even experienced stargazers were stunned by the intensity of the aurora borealis that swept across the night sky in northern Scandinavia after the biggest solar flare in six years.

“It has been absolutely incredible,” British astronomer John Mason cried from the deck of the MS Midnatsol, a cruise ship plying the fjord-fringed coast of northern Norway.

“I saw my first aurora 40 years ago, and this is one of the best,” Mason told The Associated Press, his voice nearly drowning in the cheers of awe-struck fellow passengers.

U.S. space weather experts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Tuesday evening that so far they had heard of no problems from the storm that triggered the auroras, which made it as far south as Wales, where the weather often doesn’t cooperate with good viewing.

It was part of the strongest solar storm in years, but the sun is likely to get even more active in the next few months and years, said physicist Doug Biesecker at the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado.

“To me this was a wake up call. The sun is reminding us that solar max is approaching,” Biesecker said. “A lot worse is in store for us. We hope that you guys are paying attention. I would say we passed with flying colors.”

At the end, Nadal smashed a ball up high in the stadium, almost clearing the roof. He then applauded along with the crowd when Federer walked off.

The 25-year-old Spaniard won the 2009 Australian title but lost in the quarterfinals in his next two trips to Melbourne Park. Federer hasn’t added to his record 16 Grand Slam titles since he won the 2010 Australian Open.

“I thought Rafa played well from start to finish,” Federer said. “It was a tough match physically as well. I’m disappointed, but it’s only the beginning of the season. I’m

feeling all right, so it’s OK.” When the often enthralling play was suspended for 10 minutes late in the second set for an Australian Day fireworks display, Federer seemed to be affected most. Nadal led 5-2 at the time, and Federer lost his serve in the next game to give the Spaniard the set. In all, the Swiss dropped 11 points in a row.

“It’s tough, it’s not helpful, that’s for sure,” Federer said of the break for the fireworks. “They told us before, so it was no surprise. But I knew it was a lot of points in a row that I lost.”

The capacity, 15,000-strong crowd was evenly split in its support, with the names seeming to blur after the R in rival chants.

Each time somebody called out for Rafa, it was met by a response for Roger. The cheers were just as loud for Nadal’s scrambling, sometimes astonishing, passing shots as for Federer’s deft winners.

With the players on serve in the second set, Nadal went so far wide on a Federer return that he was near the side wall of the arena.

Incredibly, he stretched wide and returned the ball crosscourt for a winner. That set up three break points and Nadal clinched the game to take a 4-2 lead in the second set.

Federer saved a set point in the 11th game of the third set that eventually forced a tiebreaker.

But Federer made three unforced errors in the tiebreaker to give Nadal a 6-1 lead, and the Spaniard eventually clinched the set on his last opportunity of five set points.

“Please win the point, that’s all,” Nadal recalled when asked what he was telling himself at 6-5 in the tiebreaker. “I was very, very nervous at that moment. Losing four set points in a row is tough, especially when you play the toughest in history.”

Both players were asked if they bring out the best in each other.

“I don’t know if it’s true ... it’s my assumption,” Federer said. “I feel he plays really good against me. He’s also got a winning record against me which maybe gives him extra confidence. I think he has a clear plan and he follows that one very well.”

Nadal said that’s not the case.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) — LeBron James scored 32 points, including the game’s last six from the free throw line, to lead the Miami Heat to a 101-98 win over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night.

The Heat trailed 98-95 after a 3-pointer by Detroit’s Jonas Jerebko, but James made two free throws to cut the deficit to one with 1:19 left.

After Damien Wilkins fumbled the ball out of bounds for the Pistons, James drove straight at Austin Daye, drawing another foul and putting Miami up 99-98.

He made two more free throws with 9.4 seconds remaining after Detroit’s Greg Monroe missed inside.

Chris Bosh hit his first seven shots and finished with 27 points for Miami — which was without Dwyane Wade, who sat out because of a right ankle injury.

Daye scored a career-high 28 points for the Pistons.

Bosh answered with five straight points for the Heat, but Monroe scored inside while being fouled and his free throw tied the game. After a miss by Shane Battier, Jerebko made an open 3-pointer from near the top of the key to give Detroit a 98-95 advantage.

After a Miami timeout, Daye poked the ball away from James, and Knight came up with it and was fouled. But he missed both free throws, and Detroit wouldn’t score again.

James went 13 of 14 from the free throw line after entering the game shooting 73 percent. He had a 20for-37 stretch from the line over three games earlier this month, but he looked plenty calm Wednesday with the game on the line.

Bosh handled most of the scoring early, going 6 for 6 in the first quarter with a 3-pointer.

At one point, Miami led 14-9 and Bosh had 13 points. He hurt the Pistons from the perimeter and inside, and the Heat led 24-17 after the first.

Daye did his best to respond for Detroit, scoring 18 points in the second quarter. Detroit moved the ball well on offense, and Daye made four 3-pointers in the period.

Miami led by as many as 11 in the second but had to settle for a 56-50 halftime lead after Daye’s 12-footer at the buzzer.

At the end of the third quarter, it was James’ turn to make a last-second shot. His 3-pointer gave Miami an 8074 lead.

Cayman National Sprint Meet Swimmers make a splash Stingray Swim Club, Grand Cayman, 26 January 2012:The Cayman National Sprint Meet, hosted by the Stingray Swim Club (SSC) of Grand Cayman at the Lions Aquatic Centre and traditionally the first meet of the New Year, took place on January 14th and held on to that honour.

Ninety-four swimmers took part in the day’s events and with the stands full of family, supporters and wellwishers the day was a resounding success. “It is always amazing to me,” said Cayman National’s Brian Esau, Executive Vice President of Cayman National Bank, who was on hand to watch the races and present trophies.

“When the youngest age groups - the U6’s are swimming. The courage it must take to stand at the end of the pool looking down the longest 25m of their life... and they just dive in and swim. It is impressive. Swimming is a sport which the youngest competitors can excel in - and given that is takes place in the water it is perhaps one of the most sensible sports to take part in the Cayman Islands!”

Sprint Meets focus on the short distances - 25m races for the U6’s and US’s and 50m races for the other age groups. With all of the scheduled races taking place between 9am and 12:30pm the event is short in length and fast in excitement; and at the end of the day there were a number of well deserving swimmers who were recognised with High Points Awards.

Notable by their absence from the pool at the meet were a number of Stingray Swim Club’s Senior Swimmers who were in Florida at the 2012 raked Senior Invitational Swim Meet held at Nova Southeastern University Aquatic Centre in Plantation. With a cold front passing

through Florida the swimmers had to contend with far colder weather than they are used to; but, despite the cold the swimmers, who were accompanied by Coach Dominic Ross has a great experience and returned home enthused and enthusiastic.

SSC President, Brenda McGrath was delighted with the turn out. “It really was a wonderful morning,” she commented. “It was unfortunate that we experienced some glitches with the electronic timing system; however, people triumphed over technology and the great swimming, fantastic music and wonderful volunteers all worked together to make it a great day for everyone.

Kemar spectacular in indoor 60m Kemar Hyman turned in the second fastest time in the world this year for the 60 metre dash as he posted a 6.56 second mark in the finals at the Auburn Indoor Invitational at Auburn University last Saturday.

Kemar,competing for Florida State University,had already qualified for the World Indoor Championships, in Istanbul,Turkey next March,and improved his personal best to 6.64 in the preliminaries.

However, it was in the final that

he put himself in the mix for medals at the upcoming meet. He was just nipped for victory by Auburn’s Harry Adams, who claimed the top performance for the year so far with 6.55. Kemar tied the Cayman national record for the event,which he now holds jointly with Kareem Streete-Thompson,who set the mark originally in Leipzig,Germany in 2004. Kemar’s time was only .01 second off the FSU record.

Indoor Champinships,which are coincidentally also scheduled for 9-10 March in Boise, Idaho. His outstanding effort earned him a share of the title of Atlantic Coast Conference Male Indoor Track Performer of the Week along with Clemson hurdler Spencer Adams. Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is looking forward to leading out the side at Wembley for the first time but has cautioned against complacency given what happened to Arsenal in last year’s final against Birmingham City.

Kenny Dalglish’s side drew 2-2 with Premier League leaders Manchester City last night to book their place in the Carling Cup final 3-2 on aggregate.

They will face Cardiff City on February 26 and Gerrard, who has never been to the home of English football with his hometown club, insists the Championship side will not be under-estimated. “It’s been too long for this club to not be in a major cup final, so it’s nice to finally get there,” said Gerrard, whose penalty helped end the Liverpool’s 16-year Wembley absence.

Evra will play if fit at Anfield - Phelan Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan insists that Patrice Evra will not be spared playing against Liverpool in Saturday’s FA Cup clash.

“If he is fit, he is considered to play like any other player,” said Phelan.

It is the first time the two rivals have met since Evra levelled racism allegations at Luis Suarez, who ended up being handed an eight-match ban.

Suarez will still be suspended this weekend, a fact that is only likely to heighten the tension at Anfield.
