In the face of five murders in nine days, says Commissioner of Police David Baines, armed robberies have nearly stopped, and the evidence is that the two are intimately tied. “Who do you think is involved in them?” the commissioner asked. “The robberies are gone. We have not had one. We have direct evidence that some of those involved in the murders have been involved in the robberies.” Police have already linked the white Toyota van in which Jason Christian was killed on 19 September to the 15 September armed robbery at Tortuga Rum in Pasadora Place. “We are looking at what has triggered this, but maybe it’s that some of them were taking too much haul.” On 3 October , Mr Baines told iNews, the first of 20 officers from northwest UK would arrive, most from Merseyside, to bolster the ranks of local police. International opera star to sing at charity concert

International opera singer Lisa Carlisle arrives in the Cayman Islands this week, ready to begin rehearsing for “One Voice…Many Voices,” a special concert in the series, “Voices for Hospices.” The concert will take place on 8 October at the Arts and Recreation Centre, Camana Bay, and will start at 7pm. Voices for Hospices is a wave of simultaneous concerts around the globe which takes place on World Hospice and Palliative Care Day every two years. The objective is to raise funds and awareness for hospice and palliative care, in each region, as well as around the world. Ms Carlisle will be joined by soloist Isabella Rooney, Butterfield’s Young Musician of the Year, in an evening of musical entertainment for the whole family, featuring the Cayman National Orchestra and the Cayman National Choir. “We will be performing a range of

music which is in keeping with the theme of One Voice, Many Voices such as Barry Manilow’s “One Voice,” and “The Gift of Music” by John Rutter, along with opera, classical, crossover, music theatre and cabaret,” Ms Carlisle said. “The evening will include orchestral pieces such as a James Bond medley, ensemble numbers with solos and choir (like the Joni Mitchell song) “Both Sides Now…it will be an evening of uplifting music,” she added. Ms Carlisle will also be helping with some musical workshops during her stay.

She added: “I believe that Voices for Hospices is a wonderful cause. Within my own family I have firsthand experience at how the care, support and expertise of a hospice can have a positive impact on not just the patient, but the whole family. I am honoured to be part of a fundraising event for this cause. “Where words fail, music speaks, and I think a concert encompassing a broad range of music with something for everyone, along with the community, is a perfect way to raise funds for a worthy cause, with the potential to positively impact many.”

Man accused of asking to suck women’s toes CONWAY, Ark. (AP) — An Arkansas man who was once convicted of threatening to cut off a woman’s feet and suck her toes while she bled to death was back in jail Monday after two women told police he wanted to touch their toes as well. Michael Robert Wyatt was arrested in Conway, about 30 miles north of Little Rock, on misdemeanor harassment charges. Two women who had called police earlier this month picked his photo from a lineup, said Conway Police spokeswoman LaTresha Woodruff. According to police reports, one woman said the man stared at her while she was shopping at a department store, then approached her and “told her he loved her toes and they were so long and beautiful.” He told her he had a “foot fetish” and wanted to suck on her toes, the police report said. He was being held Monday in Faulkner County jail on $1,290 bond.

Topless Rihanna shocks Northern Ireland farmer

DUBLIN (AP) — Northern Ireland farmer Alan Graham says he doesn’t know who Rihanna is but she must keep her top on while performing on his land. Graham says he enforced a dress code as he watched Rihanna shoot a video Monday in his wheat field east of Belfast for her new single, “We Found Love.” She’s in Northern Ireland this week to perform three concerts. The 23-year-old switched from a flannel checked shirt into a stars-and-stripes bikini, a red bra, a mesh black top, and finally went topless before Graham climbed off his tractor to protest. Graham says “I had a conversation with Rihanna. I hope she understands where I’m coming from. We shook hands.” to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

“We are a small force to cope with serious incidents when they occur,” he said, “but not five of them simultaneously, so we have been stretched. We will have two senior investigative officers to bolster our efforts, three sergeants, and five officers for each of them,” he said. “They are trained and qualified for investigation and will provide capacity, expediting inquiries, doing interviews and finding witnesses,” he said. The visitors will stay between four weeks and six weeks, the commissioner said, but will remain should they be needed. He stopped short of threatening to “fight fire with fire”, famously suggested by a former Merseyside police chief confronting a crime wave, but said the new Cayman team would balance “service-style policing and force-style policing” as warranted. However, he rejected accusations that local police had failed to combat the nine-day wave of killings, which started on 13 September with the slaying of Robert Bush and culminated with the 22 September East End death of Asher McGaw. “We have pulled between six people and eight people in, from the same group and we put in a lot of effort. Others are being sought, but they have gone into hiding,” Mr Baines said. “We want to make sure, though, to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

that they have as much to fear from us as they do from the opposition [gangs]. We tell them they are either a potential victim or a potential offender.” Three of the detainees remain in custody, he said, while the others are “out on bail, on tags, with an ankle bracelet, so we can monitor their whereabouts”. “But we don’t have the officers to babysit them, and if there is no evidence to charge them, well …” he trailed off, but echoed Chief Inspector John Jones who last week said police could not act outside the law. “There is enough evidence to demonstrate that short-term expedients like that are not effective,” Mr Baines said. “The toughstyle policing in Jamaica, where the police have killed 340 people in the past year, has not reduced levels of violence.” He also rejected criticism that police had been insufficiently aggressive about Facebook photos of gang members making hand signs and brandishing weapons. “No, that is not enough. Unless we have significantly more, then what do we have? A picture? Is that evidence? Is that proof? It is not sufficient to charge.” Gang legislation, he said, was inadequate. “It hasn’t been used once in six years.” Police were still seeking the original “trigger” for the murders, but acknowledge both the tension and

social background in the community. “We didn’t shoot these people and we didn’t put the guns in their hands, and this didn’t happen overnight,” Mr Baines said. “What happened that young men that were in Sunday school five years ago now think it’s alright to shoot someone in the head?” he asked, echoing Sunday remarks by Church of God Pastor Stanwyck Myles that he used to drive Andrew Baptist, murdered on 15 September, home from Sunday school. “We have young Caymanian men ready to kill young Caymanian men for ridiculous reasons. What happened to a whole generation of young men? What did they miss? Noting that gang members were as young as 17, he lamented “the indication where these young men’s futures are going to take them. “These are education and social issues. The police role is like first aid when these things boil over. We take them off the street and detain them, but we are already at the end of the story.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ricki Lake celebrated her top-scoring 23 points and 12 inches of weight loss; Rob Kardashian celebrated being a better dancer than his sister Kim; and Chaz Bono celebrated just getting through his routine on “Dancing With the Stars.” “My knees just hurt so much,” Bono said before landing in last place Monday night. The author and activist is counting on viewer votes to carry him through Tuesday’s episode, when a second celebrity will be eliminated from the hit ABC show. Judges’ scores are combined with viewer votes to determine who is ousted each week. Basketball star Ron Artest, now known as Metta World Peace, was the first contestant to go.

Judges said Monday that Bono’s quickstep was just too slow and gave him 17 points out of 30. “The bottom line is it’s a quickstep and I’ve moved faster through the car wash,” judge Len Goodman said. Nancy Grace was perhaps moving a little too fast. She suffered a wardrobe malfunction during a bouncy number danced to “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing”). Grace had a little too much swing in partner Tristan MacManus’ arms and her breast spilled out of her dress.

China links strengthened with TIEA deal

McKeeva Bush signs the deal as Song Lan and Governor Duncan Taylor look on.

Paul Kennedy paul.kennedy@ieyenews.com

Premier McKeeva Bush has announced that he has entered into a landmark agreement to share tax information with China. It will grant the Chinese government access to all financial information held in Cayman for its nationals and corporations. This is the 26th tax information exchange agreement (TIEA) signed by the Government. Although it’s widely accepted that the deal with China – one of the fastest-growing economies in the world – is by far the most significant. It further strengthens the links between the Bush administration and the Far East. The Premier has entered into an agreement with the China Harbour Engineering Company to construct cruise ship passenger docks in George Town, Spotts Landing and a smaller pier at the Cayman Turtle Farm. At the signing ceremony on September 26, Cayman Islands Premier McKeeva Bush said: “Signing this TIEA is a significant step in to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

enhancing the relationship between the Cayman Islands and China. “With China being one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, we are confident that this TIEA will contribute positively to economic activity between the two countries.” “This is our 26th signed agreement for exchange of information for tax purposes, and the People’s Republic of China has become another member of the G20 countries to have a TIEA with the Cayman Islands.” Bush co-signed the agreement with Song Lan, Deputy Commissioner of the State Administration. Both countries must conclude their individual ratification procedures before the agreement can enter into force. Premier Bush has indicated a formal agreement – believed to be in the region of $500m - with the Chinese for the berthing construction work will be signed in November. He has already signed an outline agreement in the form of a Memorandum of Understanding. China is already involved in a multimillion dollar deal in Jamaica where

they are completely overhauling the country’s road infrastructure. China Harbour opened a Kingston office late last year after agreeing to manage two reconstruction projects in the island state: the $400 million Jamaica Infrastructure Development Programme and the $65 million Jamaica Airport Highway Project. The work has been criticised because despite reassurances from China, there has not been the same local job opportunities for Jamaican nationals.

Lawyer: Knox is like Jessica Rabbit is instead a loving young woman who simply displayed immaturity and naivete at the time of the 2007 slaying. Knox was convicted of sexually assaulting and murdering Meredith Kercher, a British student in Perugia, and sentenced to 26 years in prison. Co-defendant Raffaele Sollecito, an Italian who was Knox’s boyfriend at the time of the crime, was convicted of the same charges and sentenced to 25 years. They both deny wrongdoing and have appealed their 2009 convictions. A verdict in the appeals case is expected in early October.

On Tuesday, Bongiorno delivered her closing arguments, likening Knox to the voluptuous character in the “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” film. “Jessica Rabbit looks like a maneater, but she is a faithful and loving woman,” Bongiorno said.

PERUGIA, Italy (AP) — A defense lawyer told an Italian court Tuesday that Amanda Knox, the American student convicted of killing her roommate, isn’t a manipulating, sex-obsessed “femme fatale” as her accusers charge, but is rather like Jessica Rabbit — just drawn that way. In closing arguments before an appeals court, lawyer Giulia Bongiorno compared Knox to the cartoon character, contending that Knox had been unfairly portrayed over the course of the media-hyped, four-year case. The iconic rock act is on the list of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees for the 2012 class released Tuesday. Women who rock feature prominently among first-time nominees. Joining Jett, (pictured) whose “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” remains a classic rock standard 30 years after its release, are sister act Heart and Rufus with Chaka Khan. They’re joined by Guns ‘N Roses,

hip-hop pioneers Eric B. & Rakim, glum glam Goths The Cure and The Small Faces/The Faces, which includes Rod Stewart. Bluesman Freddie King and The Spinners are also first-time nominees on the ballot for the hall’s 2012 class. Previous nominees up again include The Beastie Boys, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Donna Summer, Laura Nyro, Donovan and War and its an eclectic group, running from lush British folk to classic early beats and bone-crushing power rock. An act must have released its

first single or album 25 years ago to qualify for induction. More than 500 voters will determine who makes the hall. New members will be inducted at a ceremony at the hall of fame in Cleveland on April 14.

Shanghai subway trains crash; hundreds injured SHANGHAI (AP) — A Shanghai subway train crashed into another that was stopped underground Tuesday afternoon, injuring more than 210 people in the latest trouble for the rapidly expanded transportation system in China’s commercial center. The crash occurred after Shanghai Shentong Metro Group blogged that line 10 was having delays due to equipment problems. Line 10 opened just last year as one of the city’s newest subways. At least 212 people were hurt, three seriously, the metro operator said. It said none had life-threatening to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Regardless of the cause or responsibility, we are stricken with remorse for having caused our passengers injury and losses,” the company said in an apology posted on its blog. “We want to deeply, deeply apologize.” The crash follows a July 23 collision of two bullet trains in southeastern China that killed 40 people and injured 177, bringing into the open festering resentments over the huge costs of the country’s massive buildup of its rail system, especially its high-

speed trains. Authorities have not yet disclosed the results of an investigation into the cause of that accident, though state media cited officials saying signaling equipment was thought to have been a key factor.

OPINIONS

The editor speaks What a year ahead for Miss Cayman, Lindsay Japal

Colin Wilson

Lindsay Japal has an action packed year ahead of her. The crown that was placed on her head after the ceremony last Saturday looks like it’s pretty heavy. But I’ve no doubt the weight that’s being placed on her shoulders will be much greater. During the next 12 months she will travel the globe, first to London for the Miss World competition next month. All the time she will be representing the Cayman Islands in everything she does, and I’ve every confidence she will shine brightly and portray all that’s good about our country. Lindsay is not just a beauty queen. Her new role has so much more about it than just having a pretty face. Lindsay has become an ambassador for these Islands. It will be a roller coaster ride for the 23-year-old who says she wants to complete her bachelor’s degree in finance after her stint as Miss Cayman is over. Lindsay Japal is a fabulous example to all the youth of this country. Sure, we are not all blessed with her beauty but maybe we can learn lessons from her. She’s focused, determined, hard working, clearly very, very clever and attractive to boot. It would have been a tough call for the judges last Saturday with so many fine contestants on show. I’m glad I didn’t have to choose between the ten young ladies who had all worked so very hard. Last year’s winner, Cristin Alexander told iNews how much she enjoyed her tenure as Miss Cayman – but colin.wilson@ieyenews.com

iBusiness

admitted it was hard work and she was ready for a new chapter in her life. Lindsay has all that ahead of her now and I’ve no doubt she’s the right person for the job. But it’s not just Lindsay who has to represent our country, both overseas and on home soil. That responsibility lies with every single one of us. We need to pull together and work hard to show the world what a great place this is. Good luck Lindsay, I’m sure you will take your responsibilities seriously and, as far as the next 12 months go, enjoy every single minute of it. You will never forget your time as Miss Cayman.

Jamaica’s departing PM meets with Cabinet members

Commerce Minister Christopher Tufton

Education Minister Andrew Holness

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Jamaica’s departing prime minister met privately with his Cabinet colleagues as the Caribbean country’s governing party looked for a new chief to lead them into next year’s general elections. Prime Minister Bruce Golding has made no public comments since he and the Jamaica Labor Party announced Sunday that he is stepping down after four years in office. They said Golding would formally resign once a new party leader is chosen in an internal election expected in November. Attention focused on Education Minister Andrew Holness and Commerce Minister Christopher Tufton, young Labor politicians who are relatively popular with the public. Another possibility is the finance minister, Audley Shaw. Golding has suffered from anemic public backing because of his handling of the 2009 U.S. extradition request for Jamaican drug kingpin Christopher “Dudus” Coke. But his announcement still surprised many people in Jamaica and elsewhere in the Caribbean, a to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

region where embattled politicians have a history of trying to cling to power. In a Monday editorial, the newspaper Jamaica Gleaner said the 63-year-old prime minister’s resignation is unprecedented in the island’s political history — if it is not a political ploy to rally his supporters. “Taking the prime minister at his word, we are truly encouraged by something which would amount to a substantial act of patriotism,” the editorial said. Labor Party chairman Mike Henry raised that issue himself by saying that the party’s central committee hoped to persuade Golding to reconsider, although Information Minister Daryl Vaz said the decision was final. Henry also dismissed suggestions that Golding’s resignation was a sign of disarray in the party. Rupert Lewis, a political science professor at the University of the West Indies in Kingston, said the extradition battle over Coke in 2009 and 2010 hobbled Golding and “exposed the degeneration of party politics and

the international gangsterism and criminality which many Jamaicans across party lines have come to accept as part of how the party system works.” Golding, whose Parliament district included Coke’s West Kingston slum stronghold, resisted extradition for nine months, arguing the U.S. indictment on gun- and drugtrafficking charges relied on illegal wiretap evidence. The stance led Washington to question Jamaica’s reliability as an ally in the fight against drug trafficking. When Golding finally agreed to send Coke to the U.S., a hunt for the fugitive led to days of fighting in May 2010 that killed at least 73 civilians and three security officers. Coke was captured about a month later and extradited. He has since pleaded guilty to racketeering and assault charges, admitting his was leader of the brutal Shower Posse gang. Golding has been Jamaica’s prime minister since 2007, when he returned the Labor Party to power after 18 years in opposition.

World Heart Day: Message from the Minister of Health World Heart day is observed every year on 29 September to bring attention to the toll that cardiovascular diseases take on individuals and communities. In addition, it highlights things we can do to help prevent the development of heart disease and minimize its impact on our lives if we are already affected. Last week (19 and 20 September), leaders from around the world gathered for only the second ever United Nations High Level Meeting on a health issue – the first was to discuss the AIDS epidemic. This year they gathered to address noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), which include chronic health conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and chronic lung disease. These preventable illnesses kill more people each year than all other causes of death combined. Representatives at the meeting described NCDs as ‘a huge threat to global stability’. Of these, cardiovascular disease is the largest culprit. Here in Cayman our statistics reflect the world wide trend. Heart disease is the cause of over one third of deaths each year. A significant percent of the population have been diagnosed with hypertension (high blood pressure) or diabetes, both of which are major risk factors for heart disease. Each of us has a role to play in solving this problem. Government can implement laws and policies; health care providers can assess our risks and provide guidance and treatment as necessary; non-profit organizations

Minister of Health, Hon. Mark Scotland.

12

provide community education and offer support; employers provide health insurance benefits and can initiate employee wellness initiatives. These are all crucial actions that can help to address the problems that cardiovascular diseases create. Yet, they can only be beneficial if each one of us takes individual action and are

proactive in protecting our own heart health, and that of our families. This year, the theme for World Heart Day is, “One World, One Home, One Heart” and it highlights and encourages action on the part of individuals/families. We know that a significant percentage (between 80-85%) of premature deaths due to cardiovascular disease can be prevented and that individuals can be proactive by taking charge of their own risks by taking steps such as: • Choosing healthy food options • Increasing physical activity • Saying ‘NO’ to tobacco • Drinking alcohol in moderation • Knowing your numbers These are surprisingly affordable and attainable solutions, however, it does take determination and action. Start small, make simple changes, keep at them consistently and then add other healthy actions. Before long you will have improved your own health, and likely that of those close to you, and reduced your risk of heart disease. Start today. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Sybil really is a true hero Kevin Creary kevin.creary@ieyenews.com

Cayman’s own National Hero Mrs. Sybil McLaughlin is the only woman in the world who can claim to be the first female speaker of the house in the Caribbean. The veteran public servant is revered as being one of the Island’s most astute, seasoned, dynamic and accomplished parliamentarians. The dynamism and precedence of her contribution to the development and effective functioning of the Cayman Island’s Parliament have helped opened the doors of opportunity for other women to hold similar positions. The Cayman Islands now has another female speaker of the house, Mrs. Mary Lawrence. The National Hero applauds the country’s social and economic progress, but conceded that the Island’s journey into the technological age has been less encouraging to other areas of social and intellectual value. “In our days it was just magazines and radios. “Some of the things that the very young people are seeing on TV today, they really should not be seeing. “Televisions project things in a visual way, which makes it unnecessary to sometimes “read between the lines” or imagine. “People are growing more dependent on computers and are not exercising their brain power as much as they should. “Not many people are reading books these days, they mainly read e-mails and text messages. “People don’t send much birthday and Christmas cards anymore. “Technology and cell phones are very important, but you must know how to use it. “Sometimes in the churches Ministers have to request that people turn off their cell phones. “Some people even have between two to three cell phones these days.” said Mrs. McLaughlin. Sybil received a bouquet of flowers earlier this month in recognition of her work

from Mobile Alabama, and Mrs. Lottie Verona Bush, from Cayman Brac. Mrs. McLaughlin has successfully helped redefine the meaning independent woman. In an interview with iNews, the hero expressed delight at the advancement of women today, pointing to the fact that more women are now appointed, speaker of the House, as an example. “I am the first woman in the Caribbean to be appointed Speaker of the House. “But now more women have being assigned that position.” said Mrs. McLaughlin. She said the Islands have grown significantly, and should still concentrate on its rich heritage and tradition of unity and morality. She said: “I have been associated with the church from I was a baby. “As a very young child I would

stand on the benches, but I was never allowed to stare at other people. “We were brought up properly. “These days there are more parents working to make ends meet, so they have less time to commit to raising their kids.” An avid fan of music, Mrs. McLaughlin can be seen doing one of the things that she says she loves to do best, play the church organ. When the Cayman Islands received its first ever written constitution in 1959, Sybil McLaughlin was appointed as the committee’s first clerk. Mrs. McLaughlin was also appointed clerk of the executive body, which is now referred to as the cabinet. Mrs. McLaughlin was appointed the Caribbean’s first Speaker of the Legislative Assembly on the 15th February 1991, and served in that capacity until her resignation in 1996. The Cayman Island’s greatest Honor, the title of National Hero, was conferred upon Mrs. McLaughlin in 1996 for her contribution to the development of the Cayman Island’s Parliament.

First cat adoption roadshow at Camana Bay

These adorable kittens are looking for loving families

Christopher Tobutt christopher.tobutt@ieyenews.com

“Daffy” and “Spam” were two of the lucky cats that found new homes when the Humane Society held their very first Cat Adoption Roadshow at Camana Bay. Ms Aileen Samuels who helped organise the roadshow said: “It was a big success. I would do it again. It was a long day, but it was well worth it.” While idea of adoption roadshows for dogs are well established, the fear that cats would become too stressed by being moved around has been one of the factors that have held back cat roadshows. But Ms. Samuels was pleasantly surprised: “I thought they would be panic stricken but the cats actually adapted well and even seemed to be enjoying themselves. They had a playpen, a furry teddy and a fur ball for them to

play with. It was good fun,” she said. “It was good fun. Thanks to Power Flower for their trees and plants and to Animal House for their sponsorship towards the T-shirts. Also, thanks to Island Veterinary Service for their gift vouchers and to Camana Bay for the fabulous air conditioned facility they provided - it was much appreciated by our furry friends and our good hearted volunteers,” she added. Stressing the need for shelter cats to find loving homes, Ms Samuels said: “Cats in the shelter are cats that have been left abandoned because of rollover, or cats that have wandered off and been found, or cats that are feral cats bred in the wild, picked up as kittens and socialised.” Explaining how the new idea evolved, Humane Society Shelter liaison, Twila Escalante, said:

Jason Jairam of the Humane Society prepares for the Cat Road Show at Camana Bay

“We do road shows at Camana Bay on the first Saturday of every month for dogs and we wanted to give the cats a bit more exposure. A few of our volunteers got together and approached Camana Bay and they said they’d be happy to give us a space.” Humane Society President, Carolyn Parker said: “Its fantastic. It’s the first time we’ve ever done it. It gives the public an excellent opportunity to see the beautiful cats we have available for adoption outside of the shelter.” Lynn Smith-Moore, communications manager for Dart Cayman Islands, who provided the cats with the space for the roadshow, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer space to them and support the Humane Society in their efforts to find homes for the cats.”

“Cancer is devastating but if you have support… it makes it much easier to cope”

“I can’t thank the Cancer Society enough” “When I found out I had cancer, I went to the Cayman Islands Cancer Society and was able to qualify for financial assistance to cover my chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Everything I needed to help me with my cancer treatment, the Cancer Society provided. I am so blessed to be alive today. “I can’t thank the Cancer Society enough. They are always there for me. Whenever I can, I give back to the Society’s boxes that are in stores and Supermarkets. I do my part to help them to help someone else. I love these people.” Ms. Ruby Myles

All of the Cayman Athletic teams have tasted success in recent years but the U-15 team stands out by being undefeated for the last three seasons in the league and the cup. They have won every single game and Coach Gillie has high hopes for them next season as well. This year with the help of their

sponsors, the U-17 Cayman Athletic side went to Knox College in Jamaica for a cultural education exchange where they were able to compare their skills against other boys the same age. After all the awards were presented, refreshments were served. And then there was some serious fun, as different prizes were given out for

on-the-spot games such as, “The first person to come to the front wearing two-tone socks,” and “first lady to come to the front wearing a pair of men’s shoes.” Prizes included gift certificates from Funky Tangs, Young World Fashions, Burger King, Popeye’s, Pappagallo, Reflections and Radio Cayman. Manuela Ioana Nemes bodyscul@westartv.com

Manuela is an ACE Certified Personal Trainer and a lifestyle & weight management consultant at the Bodysculptor Fitness Centre. Her exercise tips will help you find the motivation to reach your fitness goal and maintain a healthy lifestyle. You can repeat the sequence of the 5 exercises below as many times as you can. For each exercise there are different variations for different levels, so you can choose the level that suits you best. While exercising outside, don’t forget to hydrate yourself more than usual and make sure the area where you are working out is safe. Enjoy!

Superset: 5 Unsupported Lunge & 5 Single Leg Squat on each leg: Strengthens the quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes. To keep your balance you also need to involve the core. This is a more difficult exercise, you can really feel the burn in your glutes. Holding the bar (or even both bars if you need to) lower yourself into a lunge without touching the floor with your back leg.

10 walking lunges: Strengthens the quadriceps and glutes.

10 Knees to chest with 10 leg lifts and 10 twists: Strengthens the abdominals with focus on lower abdominals and oblique muscles.

Step forward so that the front knee is at 90 degrees over your ankle and the front thigh is parallel with the floor and the back knee almost touches the floor.

To increase the intensity you can have the arms along the ears or to the sides. If you’re a beginner you can have the arms by your waist and you can lower yourself just half way.

Then bring the same leg forward, extended parallel with the floor into a single leg squat without touching the floor. If you have knee problems go as far as you feel comfortable or choose the option of a regular squat and regular lunge; you can hold the bars to help with balance.

20

From a seating position with legs extended on the floor, bend your knees to chest then extend them in the air, pause for a second then lift the legs a bit higher and repeat the sequence without touching the floor for 10 repetitions.

Then perform a twist on each side keeping with the heels on the floor or lifting them both for increased difficulty. If you’re a beginner, you can pause and rest your heels on the floor in between the first 2 exercises.

10 Inclined Push Up: Strengthens the chest muscles, anterior deltoid and triceps. You need to keep the core contracted by pulling the navel into spine. You can choose the angle of difficulty, the more inclined you are, the harder it is. For increased intensity you can lift one foot off the floor, then switch legs. If you’re a beginner you can keep both feet on the floor and start closer to the standing position placing both your hands on a bench.

We continue our serialisation of Anne by Constance Fenimore Woolson

Anne Part 55

“Why doesn’t she make another trial?” said Dr. Gaston, feverishly wiping his eyeglasses. “There is no use in running up and down under that island any longer.” “The captain is probably making everything ready for a final attempt,” answered Père Michaux. And so it seemed, for, after a few more minutes had passed, the steamer left her shelter, and proceeded cautiously down to the end of the little island, keeping as closely in shore as she could, climbing each wave with her bows, and then pitching down into the depth on the other side, until it seemed as if her hindquarters must be broken off, being too long to fit into the watery hollows under her. Having reached the end of the islet, she paused, and slowly turned. “Now for it,” said Père Michaux. It was sunset-time in pleasant parts of the land; here the raw, cold, yellow light, which had not varied since early morning, giving a peculiar distinctness to all objects near or far, grew more clear for a few moments—the effect, perhaps, of the after-glow behind the clouds which had covered the sky all day unmoved, fitting as closely as the cover upon a dish. As the steamer started out into the channel, those on shore could see that the passengers were gathered on the deck as if prepared for the worst. They were all there, even the children. But now no one thought any more, only watched; no one spoke, only breathed. The steamer was full in the gale, and on her side. Yet she kept along, righting herself a little now and then, and then careening anew. It seemed as though she would not be able to make headway with her one wheel, but she did. Then the islanders began to fear that she would be driven by too far out; but the to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

captain had allowed for that. In a few seconds more it became evident that she would just brush the end of the longest pier, with nothing to spare. Then the men on shore ran down, the wind almost taking them off their feet, with ropes, chains, grappling-irons, and whatever they could lay their hands on. The steamer, now unmanageable, was drifting rapidly toward them on her side, the passengers clinging to her hurricane deck and to the railings. A great wave washed over her when not twenty feet from the pier, bearing off several persons, who struggled in the water a moment, and then disappeared. Anne covered her eyes with her hands, and prayed that Rast might not be among these. When she looked again, the boat was fastened by two, by ten, by twenty, ropes and chains to the end of the pier, bows on, and pulling at her halters like an unmanageable steed, while women were throwing their children into the arms of those below, and men were jumping madly over, at the risk of breaking their ankle-bones. Anything to be on the blessed shore!

In three minutes a hundred persons were on the pier, and Rast among them. Anne, Dr. Gaston, Père Michaux, Miss Lois, and the children all recognized his figure instantly, and the two old men started down through the storm to meet him, in their excitement running along like schoolboys, hand in hand. Rast was safe. They brought him home to the Agency in triumph, and placed him in a chair before the fire. They all wanted to touch him, in order to feel that he was really there, to be glad over him, to make much of him; they all talked together. Anne came to his side with tender affection. He was pale and moved. Instinctively and naturally as a child turns to its mother he turned to her, and, before them all, laid his head down upon her shoulder, and clung to her without speaking. The elders drew away a little; the boys stopped their clamor. Only Tita kept her place by the youth’s side, and frowned darkly on the others. Then they broke into a group again. Rast recovered himself, Dr. Gaston began to make puns, and Père Michaux and Miss Lois revived the subject of Father Marquette as a safe ladder by which they could all come down to common life again. A visit to the kitchen was made, and a grand repast, dinner and supper combined, was proposed and carried into effect by Miss Lois, Père Michaux, and the Irish soldier’s wife, the three boys acting as volunteers. Even Dr. Gaston found his way to the distant sanctuary through the series of empty rooms that preceded it, and proffering his services, was set to toasting bread—a duty he accomplished by attentively burning one side of every slice, and forgetting the other, so that there was a wide latitude of choice, and all tastes were suited.

Be positive in your emotions and you will improve yourself

Georgina Wilcox georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com

Emotions love to dominate our actions and reactions, even though we do not want it to happen sometimes. Our society often sees emotions as a sign of weakness, so people are used to putting them aside and focusing on the rational aspects more and more. No matter how strict and logical you may be, you will always feel. One way or another, someone or something will get through you. Positive emotions are a lifelong goal for many of us concerned about emotional health and selfimprovement. What is more important; the amount of money you made during your life or the times you laughed out of sheer joy? People tend to put their positive emotions behind their negative feelings. This is one of the biggest problems that people come across during their lives. There is no clear way to ignore a negative experience and try to replace it with a positive one. Life just does not work that way. For example, when you were a child, if your goldfish dies, you would be heartbroken. Your parents will probably buy you another goldfish but the sorrow is still there. Things get even more complex when you become an adult. A fight with your spouse the night before will affect your entire day. You will go to work angry, tired, and your mind will wander. On the way home from work, you will not notice the sun shining and you would not be tempted to stop at Red Spot Bay and buy some fresh fish from the stools there. All this because that one negative thought has contaminated the way you perceive the reality around you. In this moment, you will realise finding a safe place to relax your mind will do wonders for your emotional and mental improvement. So what do you do? Manage unseen forces in your relationships. Many people repeat the same issues in a series of relationships. Use the right technique to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

to learn what is really going on and get past it! Understand and cope with confusing and changing times! Have certain puzzling events unfolded in your life? Would you like to know if there is a reason for their appearance? Learn to make decisions and not worry about mistakes! Enhance your instincts and intuitions so you can better rely on your (developed) judgment. Develop confidence in yourself, based on better knowing who you truly are. Design your own roadmap to success! Base your plans on a ‘higher’ level of knowledge. Learn the Three Step Formula to deliberate attraction.. Learn to repair negative experiences and emotions that are holding you back. Learn why you may be repeatedly attracting negative events, people,

and circumstances. Most people are ‘programmed’ for unhappiness. Learn what to do about it! Learn what keeps us stuck in the same ‘life patterns’ when we think we’re changing! Are you actually responsible for everything that happens to you or are there actual ‘external events’? Finally, learn to release limiting beliefs and emotions known as ‘blocks’! Find a safe haven where you can release your emotions. It may take many forms. It can be a song, a movie, even a person or animal. The main thing is to allow yourself to get completely involved with this new activity. You might still get flashes of the problem every now and then. Ignore it and get even more absorbed in what you are doing. When the song, or the movie ends, you will abruptly return to reality. You will probably want to retreat back to the safe place. Do not do it. The safe place exists only as a helping hand, not as a solution to your life’s problems, may it be a small or big. It serves only as an escape route. You will return from your safe zone with an increased energy level. You will feel better about yourself and gain more confidence. You will see that any issue can be resolved. This is how a small escape from a harsh reality can increase your emotional and mental health. Try to do this often and be positive in your emotions. You will improve yourself.

Dads less likely to die of heart problems AP - Fatherhood may be a kick in the old testosterone, but it may also help keep a man alive. New research suggests that dads are a little less likely to die of heart-related problems than childless men are. The study — by the AARP, the government and several universities — is the largest ever on male fertility and mortality, involving nearly 138,000 men. Although a study like this can’t prove that fatherhood and mortality are related, there are plenty of reasons to think they might be, several heart disease experts said. Marriage, having lots of friends and even having a dog can lower the chance of heart problems and cardiac-related deaths, previous research suggests. Similarly, kids might help take care of you or give you a reason to take better care of yourself. Also, it takes reasonably good genes to father a child. An inability to do so might mean a genetic weakness that can spell heart trouble down the road. “There is emerging evidence that male infertility is a window into a man’s later health,” said Dr. Michael Eisenberg, a Stanford University urologist and fertility specialist who led the study. “Maybe it’s telling us that something else is involved in their inability to have kids.” The study was published online Monday by the journal Human Reproduction. Last week, a study by other researchers of 600 men in the Philippines found that testosterone, the main male hormone, drops after a man becomes a dad. Men who started out with higher levels of it were more likely to become fathers, suggesting that low levels might reflect an underlying health issue that prevents reproduction, Eisenberg said. In general, higher levels of testosterone are better, but too much or too little can cause HDL, or “good cholesterol,” to fall — a key heart

24

disease risk factor, said Dr. Robert Eckel, past president of the American Heart Association and professor of medicine at the University of Colorado, Denver. “This is a hot topic,” Eckel said. “I like this study because I have five children,” he joked, but he said many factors such as job stress affect heart risks and the decision to have children. Researchers admit they couldn’t measure factors like stress, but they said they did their best to account for the ones they could. They started with more than 500,000 AARP members age 50 and over who filled out periodic surveys starting in the 1990s for a long-running research project sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. For this study, researchers excluded men who had never been married so they could focus on those most likely to have the intent and opportunity to father a child. Men with cancer or heart disease also were excluded to compare just men who were healthy when the study began. Of the remaining 137,903 men, 92 percent were fathers and half had

three or more children. After an average of 10 years of followup, about 10 percent had died. Researchers calculated death rates according to the number of children, and adjusted for differences in smoking, weight, age, household income and other factors. They saw no difference in death rates between childless men and fathers. However, dads were 17 percent less likely to have died of cardiovascular causes than childless men were. Now for all the caveats. Researchers don’t know how many men were childless by choice and not because of a fertility problem. They don’t know what fertility problems the men’s partners may have had that could have left them childless. They didn’t have cholesterol or blood pressure information on the men — key heart risk factors. Less than 5 percent of participants were blacks or other minorities, so the results may not apply to them. All those questions aside, however, some prominent heart experts were reassured by the study’s large size and the steps researchers took to adjust for heart disease risk factors. “I think there’s something there,” and social science supports the idea that children can lower heart risks, said Dr. Eric Topol, a cardiologist and genetics expert at Scripps Health in La Jolla, Calif. “Whether it’s with a pet, a spouse or social interaction ... all those things are associated with better outcomes.” Dr. Daniel Rader, director of preventive cardiology at the University of Pennsylvania, said: “It’s biologically plausible that there’s a connection,” but the reduced risk attributed to having children “is pretty modest.” Men often ask him what they can do to keep from dying of a heart attack, he said. “I’m not really prepared to, on the basis of this, tell them to start having a few kids,” Rader said. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic disease that affects the musculoskeletal system. Symptoms vary widely among sufferers, but generally include muscle and joint aches, chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, headaches and tenderness in several of eighteen specific areas, or ‘trigger points’ on the body. Sufferers often overlook Fibromyalgia as just everyday stress. It affects women far more often than men, at a ratio of about ten to one.

Risk factors for cervical cancer are similar to the risk factors for HPV The Cayman Islands Cancer Society is observing September as Cervical Cancers/HPV Awareness Month. Nearly two decades ago, experts discovered a relationship between infection with HPV (human papillomavirus) and cervical cancer. In the first of a of a two part series we will discuss what every woman and girl should know about HPV and cervical cancer.

The cervix is part of the female reproductive system. It is the lower part of the uterus (womb) that widens during childbirth to allow the passage of the fetus. Cervical cancer is the diagnosis when the cells lining the cervix reproduce and divide abnormally.

A preventable disease? Cervical cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in women in the Caribbean and one of the leading causes of death from cancer in women in the region. Often these women are in the prime of their lives with families to take care of. The question can however be asked are many of these deaths needless? Almost 100% of all cases of cervical cancer can be attributed to one cause – exposure to a sexually transmitted form of the human papilloma virus (HPV).Most people who have ever experienced intimate sexual contact with another person will have been exposed to this virus and will have had an “active” HPV infection at some point in their lives. For most people the body’s immune system kicks into action and the infection is eliminated from the body often without the infected person ever knowing they had the virus. In a few people, sometimes because their immune system is otherwise compromised, the virus persists and remains. It is in persons with persistent HPV infections that cancer can develop, often 10 – 20 years after the initial infection.

Early age of sexual exploration and intimate sexual contact, multiple sexual partners over a lifetime especially if those partners have also had multiple partners. The more times a woman has been pregnant the more likely she is to develop cervical cancer especially if more than one man is the father of her children. Additionally women who smoke are twice as likely to develop the disease as are women who have had a mother or sister diagnosed with cervical cancer. Long-term use of the oral contraceptive pill will also increase risk.

How to lower your risk for cervical cancer Women can therefore substantially lower their risk by abstaining from initial sexual contact for as long as possible, remaining in a monogamous relationship and avoiding tobacco products. Women can also lower their risk by having a Pap smear on a regular basis – at least once every two – three years or more frequently if recommended by a doctor and by getting vaccinated with the HPV vaccines; either Gardasil or Cervarix (this ideally should be done before sexual initiation). This will be further discussed in a future article. The cells on the surface of the cervix can become abnormal before they become malignant (cancerous), a condition known as cervical dysplasia. A Pap smear can identify these changes allowing treatment to occur at a stage before cancer has developed. Should cervical cancer develop, it often does so without any early warning signs or symptoms. As the disease progresses signs that you might notice are abnormal bleeding e.g. between periods or after sexual intercourse, or for those people who no longer have a period, there may be new bleeding. You may also observe an abnormal discharge that might have an odour associated with it. Symptoms that you might feel are discomfort during intercourse and pelvic pain. It is important to remember that these are also signs and symptoms of other medical conditions, so consult your doctor if you notice any of them.

The first step to get pain relief from fibromyalgia is proper diagnosis. There, however, is no specific course of treatment. Most advice is low-intensity exercise, drinking lots of water, and reducing mental and physical stresses caused by saturated fats, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, meat and sugar. Anti-depressants are often prescribed as part of the treatment, which elevate the mood of the patient. Muscle relaxants and sleep aids may also be recommended. Since fibromyalgia sufferers are often found to be low in manganese and magnesium, both of which help balance thyroid function, nutritional supplements may prove beneficial as well. Physical therapy is another essential component for fibromyalgia pain relief, as it teaches patients methods of walking, stretching, and exercise that reduce muscle tension and fatigue. A physical therapist will also teach patients how to make use of ergonomic tools in their daily life, like padded chairs and special keyboards designed to minimise muscle strain. Some patients choose to incorporate alternative treatments such as acupuncture, chiropractic, and massage therapy into their treatment. Whatever patients decide upon, it must be remembered that there is no simple cure for fibromyalgia.

Scholars International clashes with George Town

Carson Fagan on the attack for Scholars

Andrew Zarczynski info@ieyenews.com

One of the most anticipated matches of the 2011/2012 Cayman Premier League season got on the way on Sunday at the G. Haig Bodden Playing Field in Bodden Town when Scholars International clashed with George Town. Colin Rowe of Scholars International stated that he is pleased with the (i) attitude of the players, (ii) the training, and (iii) the result from the previous week. “The team is taking it one match at a time. We will introduce a few new players into this match and the spectators should expect a better game than the week before”. Lee Ramoon, speaking on behalf of George Town, stated that, although this was an early game, it was a very important game. “Hopefully, the team will play according to how they have trained. This year, we are using a different formation-a more attacking formation-that hopefully will lead to more exciting football”. One would have expected the match to be free flowing football, with each team employing tactics and strategy to gain the upper hand. Although the game was end to end action, there was no flow, as the flow was constantly interrupted by careless challenges by both teams that resulted in the referee having to employ the whistle on a regular basis. The match was very physical, with no team gaining the clear advantage. By the end of the first half the referee had issued four yellow cards. The first half ended 0:0 the only thing the game was lacking was goals at this point, the intensity and physicality of the game was worth the entrance fee alone. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

The second half started much as the first half had ended until Carson Fagan slotted home a perfectly placed header off a corner kick twelve minutes into the second half to give Scholars International the lead. Seventeen minutes later, however, Scholars International would be issued a severe blow when Mark Ebanks was given a red card after only just coming on a few minutes earlier. Scholars International, now down to ten men, did not skip a beat and did not adjust their strategy. They continued to pressure the George Town defence. George Town shuffled the pack and brought on Kevin Moore who added width to George Town’s attacking play. Inventive attacking wing play rewarded George Town with an equalizing goal in the 80th Minute. Kevin Moore’s run and deep cross from the right was directed back into the path of Justin Pierre by Leon Whittaker, Justin Pierre delivered as most in the crowd would have predicted. It seemed that the match was destined to end in a draw, which would have been an appropriate score, when Scholars International was

awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time. ONeil Taylor of Scholars took responsibility and slotted the ball home. The game ended 2:1 in favour of Scholars International who have made an impressive start to the season. In other Cayman Premier League matches on Sunday: Bodden Town came out on top against Cayman Athletic as the two most youthful sides in the Cayman Premier League battled it out at the G. Haig Bodden Playing Field. A last gasp winner from Bodden Town’s talisman Karl Solomon gave BT their first win of the season. The final score ending Bodden Town 2: Cayman Athletic 1. At the T.E. McField in George Town Roma United continued their impressive start to the season with a 2:0 victory over Future. Nicardo Beckford and super sub Ronald Emmanuel scoring for Roma. Elite dusted themselves down after their opening week defeat by taking care of Tigers 3:1. The star of the game was Elite’s number 11 Dwayne Wright, last season’s top goal scorer Wright notched up a hat trick in this game and looked a constant threat every time he got the ball.

CHICAGO (AP) — Ozzie Guillen’s eight years as manager of the Chicago White Sox were never dull. His pre-game briefings were great theater. Opinions flew, so did four-letter words, brazen answers, often raucous laughter and interesting yarns. Guillen did OK on the field, too, leading the White Sox to the World Series championship in 2005, their first since 1917. And even though Chicago has returned to the playoffs just once since that remarkable run, Guillen’s managerial talents didn’t seem to have diminished.

Certainly not in his mind. With the White Sox struggling through a disappointing season and Guillen signed only through next year after his option was picked up in January, he wanted a contract extension. Owner Jerry Reinsdorf listened but declined to give Guillen the extra years and money he wanted. So Guillen asked to be released from his contract and the White Sox agreed to do so Monday night, ending a long relationship that began when Guillen spent 13 seasons as the team’s shortstop from 19851997. “I told my wife I wouldn’t cry,” Guillen said — and he didn’t during his final news conference. He said he did get emotional when he gathered his players before Monday night’s game against Toronto — the White Sox sent him out a winner, 4-3 — and told them he was leaving. “No regrets, no regrets,” Guillen said. “Very disappointed in this year, yes.”

Colts face more QB questions after another loss INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Peyton Manning is out, Kerry Collins is hurt and Curtis Painter isn’t sure if he’ll be starting next week. It’s just another messy day in Indianapolis.

SEE something,

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

Less than 13 hours after a third straight loss, the Colts’ quarterback carousel spun wildly — team officials denied a report Manning was lost for the season, declined to say whether Collins had suffered a concussion and sidestepped the issue of adding another quarterback to the roster. “It just depends on the situation and we’ll address it as we go,” coach Jim Caldwell said. “We have to look at all the possibilities, and it’s our job to cover all those bases.” Many are wondering just how much can be covered this week. Manning is expected to miss at least five more weeks and perhaps the season after having neck surgery Sept. 8, his third in 19 months. Collins didn’t talk to reporters Monday because he was receiving injury treatment. Caldwell said Collins was forced out of Sunday night’s game because of concussion-like symptoms and that he was still being evaluated. Collins also missed practice time last week with a sore throwing shoulder. The only other quarterback on Indy’s active roster is Painter, the tough-luck backup who led the Colts to their most meaningful touchdown drive of the season Sunday night. Painter hasn’t been told whether he’ll get his first career start next Monday at Tampa Bay.

Messi looking for first Champions League win Paul Kennedy paul.kennedy@ieyenews.com

With two hat tricks in his last three games, Lionel Messi looks primed to lead defending champion Barcelona to its first win of this Champions League campaign at BATE Borisov in Group H tonight. Messi has scored a Spanish league best eight goals this season, but his team will need to avoid repeating the defensive mistakes that led to a 2-2 draw against Milan in their European opener. AC Milan hosts Viktoria Plzen in the other group match. With Brazil forwards Alexandre Pato and Robinho unavailable, Milan is hoping that Zlatan Ibrahimovic can return from a leg injury against competition newcomer Viktoria, which drew 1-1 with BATE two weeks ago to put all teams in the group level at one point each. The 24-year-old Messi can climb to second place on the club’s alltime scoring list with another hat trick. He is only two goals away from matching Ladislau Kubala’s total of 194. Barcelona’s top scorer is Cesar Rodriguez, who scored 235 goals from 1942-55. If Messi keeps scoring at the same rate he did last season, he could pass that mark before this campaign is over. “He is doing incredible things. Each day he surprises everyone with a new record, he continually outdoes himself,” Barcelona forward David Villa said. “Nobody can compare with him, and we are very happy to have him wearing our colors.” Villa said that even after winning two European titles in three years his team is still hungry to repeat. “This team knows its potential and that we can reach our goals, but we are also aware that this has just begun,” Villa said. Manchester United hope to improve on their disappointing draw in the opening match when they face Basle at Old Trafford. Ashley Young admits he is living the dream at Manchester United ahead of his Champions League debut.

Lionel Messi hopes to continue his scoring form tonight Young said: “I’m very excited by it. Coming to a club like Manchester United and playing in these big competitions is any boy’s dream. “I’m looking forward to being able to say I have played in the Champions League. “I have been delighted with the performances I have put in so far but the matches are coming thick and fast and you have to be on your toes and ready every time you pull on the shirt.” Boss Sir Alex Ferguson has a lengthy injury list to cope. Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez, Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans (ankle) and Chris Smalling (groin) are all missing. Antonio Valencia is likely to again be pressed into service as an emergency right-back with Rafael’s injury set to keep him out for the long-term. Michael Owen, Dimitar Berbatov and Danny Welbeck will battle for the starting spots up front.

Sports accolades and proud smiles were the order of the day when the soccer kids of the Cayman Athletic Sports Club received their awards for the 2010/2011 Season, at the George Town Primary School hall. Paulette Conolly-Bailey, the club’s Media Officer, began the evening by thanking all those who had helped make the club’s year such a huge success. “A big thank-you to all our sponsors…we are all looking forward to a great upcoming season.” Jenny Seymour was invited to give the opening prayer: “Thank you for all those who have helped day after day. Thank you, Lord you have helped us, guided us and blessed us…keep these boys on the right path and bless them,” she said. Coach Gillie Seymour was also invited to give a few words: “I welcome you and I’m looking forward to higher and better things in the coming years,”

Team Manager of the Year-Angelita Seymour, receives her award from Past Executive Member, Dell Ebanks

he said. Award categories included: Goalkeeper of the Year, Defender of the Year, Midfielder of the Year, MVP (Most Valuable Player) Goal Scorer, Runner-Up Goal Scorer and Team Spirit. The awards were presented for Under 13’s, Under 15’s, Under 17’s and the First Division. Angelita Seymour was presented with the Team Manager of the Year Award and Gillie Seymour reveived the Coach of the Year Award. John Nixon received a Fan Supporter of the Year Award. Sponsor awards were presented to representatives from Central Cooling, Moneygram, Financial Integrated Services, Stuarts Walker Hersant, and George Town Primary School. Within the five Cayman Sports Club teams there are over 100 boys and there are even plans to start a girls team in the near future. Coach Ernie Seymour, also known as Coach Gillie, says that to cover the demand to play, there is the need for

more coaches. “We need the older guys to start giving back to the game. If past national players, guys that have been on soccer scholarships or coaching courses have got anything at all from the game then they should be coming back to help,” said Coach Gillie. Continued on page 16
