Premier McKeeva Bush has been in discussions with boxing promoter Don King to bring the Charles “Killa” Whittaker fight to Cayman.

As Whittaker manager Raul Alvarez sits down next week with King, the premier threw his weight

behind the prospective bout against IBF junior middleweight champion Cornelius Bundrage.

“I have met Don King, and it’s a great stage, but they wanted a lot of money for it. We don’t have that kind of money to put up,” Mr Bush said, declining to name an amount, although fees as high as $1 million have been rumoured. “I would like

to see something and if we can get some of the rights, we might be able to make it happen.”

Supporters point out that while a Cayman gate might be limited to several thousand, worldwide broadcast rights could generate millions, while rebroadcasts and subsequent title defences would yield even more.

Just outside the Mission House in Bodden Town was the ideal venue for Gimistory, one evening out of a whole week of traditional-style Caribbean storytelling put on by the Cayman National Cultural Foundation (CNCF).

The event was well attended and everybody seemed to love it.

The show began with local performancers from the CNCF’s Young at Arts programme, Alanna Warwick Smith, Tariah Lemay and Jevaughnie Ebanks. There were also performances from Venita Ryan, Pricilla Pouchie and Barbara Aliprantis.

Fellow calypso artist, Phillip Murray, better known as Black Sage, then gave the audience a dazzling example of the art of Calypso singing at its best: “Bodden Town it is so special, you know that it was the first capital, so I am confused, I want to declare, why it is they want to put the rubbish dump here.

“If you do want a fight I am telling you, I come from Trinidad I will fight for you, because I am telling you, without a frown, I really love this place Bodden Town.

“To put the dump here I have to comment, it going to destroy all you’re environment, why they doing it? That I can bravely say, is for those rich people in Camana Bay.”

Five pound hunk of metal crashes into warehouse

PLYMOUTH, Mass. (AP) — The owners of a furniture warehouse in Plymouth, Mass., want to know the origin of a chunk of metal that plunged through the roof.

No one was hurt when the 6-inch, cylindrical piece of metal weighing about 5 pounds came through the roof Wednesday or Thursday. The chunk punched a small hole in the roof over a closet and scattered ceiling-tile debris.

Federal Aviation Administration inspectors say the piece of metal was broken at both ends and was not an airplane part.

An FAA spokeswoman says the chunk likely came from a piece of heavy machinery, possibly a wood chipper. That still doesn’t explain how it came crashing through the roof.

Police are also stumped.

The owner of Michael’s Furniture Warehouse says someone could have been killed.

Bull on the loose MILFORD, Conn. (AP) — A posse hopes to soon catch Waldo, a bull that escaped from a farm in July and has been on the loose in the coastal city of Milford, Conn.

The Connecticut Post reports that an attempt to corral the 700-pound black Angus failed Nov. 20. In the next few weeks, officials will try again.

Milford animal control officer Rick George says Waldo has been traveling with and grazing with a herd of deer.

Last month, volunteers put up a steel fence around Waldo’s hideout in Milford but he rammed it and escaped.

George says about 20 veterinarians, representatives of the state Department of Agriculture and others plan to track down Waldo in the next few weeks, trap him and move him to an animal sanctuary.

Construction industry leaders and community figures are deeply skeptical of Chinese contracts for the George Town cruise-ship port, fearing foreign ownership and crippling economic damage.

Kim Kardashian’s husband seeks annulment LOS ANGELES (AP) — NBA player Kris Humphries asked a judge Thursday to annul his 10-week, highly publicised marriage to Kim Kardashian on the basis that it was fraudulent.

The filing comes roughly a month after Kardashian filed for divorce and apologized to fans.

Humphries’ petition did not offer any details to support his contention that the marriage was a fraud, which a judge would have to determine is true for the marriage to be completely nullified.

Kardashian’s attorney Laura Wasser declined to comment on Humphries’ filing.

The couple signed a prenuptial

agreement before marrying in a starstudded ceremony Aug. 20 at an exclusive estate in California.

Kardashian’s sisters and TV co-stars Kourtney Kardashian, 32, and Khloe Kardashian, 27, served as co-maids of honor.

Kim Kardashian and Humphries began dating late last year and announced their engagement in May. He proposed on bended knee with a 20.5-carat ring by spelling out “Will you marry me?” in rose petals.

Nepal has rare hope after years of uncertainty KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) — After years of political paralysis, the impoverished, war-scarred nation of Nepal appears finally to be moving forward.

Thousands of former Maoist rebels stuck in camps for five years are joining the army or going home to start new lives. Long-feuding political parties have called a truce and started talks on how to restructure the country.

The progress has stirred cautious optimism that this Himalayan nation — one of the world’s poorest — can build on the hopes for economic development promised by the end of a

brutal civil war five years ago and the abolition of the monarchy in 2008.

While major hurdles remain, including the writing of a constitution, any movement is seen as significant in a country that has had five coalition governments since elections were last held in 2008.

“The agreements are major achievements in terms of resolving issues relating to the Maoists,” said Shridhar Khatri, an analyst with the Katmandu-based South Asia Center for Policy Studies. “It would not have been possible for the peace process and constitution making to proceed

without this latest progress.”

Political bickering has prevented the government from starting any major development projects in a country whose average per capita income of $490 makes it the 17th poorest, according to World Bank figures.

The violent winds eased but strong gusts still blew through the region Thursday night, at times reaching 60 mph in some California mountains.

Forecasters said the winds would continue to diminish through Friday.

The winds were fanning fires in northern California.

The Sacramento Bee reported that as of Thursday evening, seven fires had burned more than 130 acres in El Dorado County. Five fires had also burned more than 250 acres in Tuolumne and Calaveras counties.

Shooting, robbery, protests, road death, rescue, heaven and more Colin Wilson

Once upon a time, not such a long time ago, there were colin.wilson@ieyenews.com three peaceful islands in the Caribbean - the islands that time forgot. Time has a habit of catching up and often catching people unawares.

What a week this has been for one of these (forgotten) three islands – Grand Cayman – the largest of the Cayman Islands.

Three men were acquitted of murder and one of these, Osbourne Douglas was immediately re-arrested over charges relating to conspiracy for murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Jason Christian, who was shot and killed in Crew Road in September.

Misty, a police dog was run over in the Newlands area when its handler who was off duty should have secured it.

The police helicopter rescued two surfers who got into trouble in the rough sea near the South Sound cemetery.

Cruise arrivals have sunk by the largest drop in the Islands history to only 48,603 passengers getting off their luxury ship to be tendered ashore – a drop of 43% less than the number of visitors last year. If you do the sums of each passenger only spending $25 each here it almost equates to a million dollars in lost revenue to our businesses and I am being very conservative with my sums.

A 52 year old man was killed in a road crash on Esterley Tibbetts Highway and the driver of the other car was arrested for DUI and dangerous driving. This, just before the RCIPS Christmas Cracker crackdown that started Dec 1. The Christmas Cracker is also going to be cracked open to target a lot more other ‘novelties’ including the personal space of women! Trying to keep drunks off our roads should have been the number one priority, if not the only priority, but the huge problem we have here of women not having enough personal space is going to be “particularly addressed.”

Former RCIPS Sergeant Theresa Solomon was sacked because she refused to work from sundown on Fridays through to Saturday evenings after converting to Seventh Day Adventism. Commissioner David Baines was well within his rights for dismissing her because she had sworn an oath to the RCIPS to uphold the law in the office of constable. “There can only be one lawful command, and that is the earthly laws of the Cayman Islands, and the commands you receive from the officers of the RCIPS,” said Baines. Heaven will have to wait.

Premier McKeeva Bush said at the opening of this years Cayman Captive Forum held at The Ritz-Carlton, “Immigration controls have to play their part and make the road possible so that we have good staff in our jurisdiction. Nobody wants to have their investment in a country where they aren’t sure who is managing what

and they can’t get the staff they need. For a small island it’s tough, but I state publicly that we need to change our immigration regime. We need to enact legislation to allow business to flourish.” It is anticipated the new regulations will include ten year work permits for senior executives, a speedier work permit application process and reduced work permit fees. That is positive.

Along with all the other on going protests, Ezzard Miller, the MLA for North Side, boycotted the opening ceremony to open the new session of the Legislative Assembly last Thursday (1). Along with East End MLA Arden McLean, Mr. Miller has on a number of occasions stated that he doesn’t think McKeeva Bush should remain as premier whilst he is under police investigation.

Both Mr. Miller and Mr. McLean ware found sitting under a tree outside the LA until the pomp and ceremony was over.

The police are hunting down two men and a woman who are suspected of robbing a man at his home on Eastern Avenue at gunpoint by forcing themselves into his home and then leaving him and his family locked in a room. This happened on Wednesday (30) just before 8pm. This is the first such robbery for a little while and we were all starting to breathe a little more easily. Are the police really serious over women’s personal space with all this going on?

Ex MLA Frank McField was shot in the leg around 6am last Thursday and was admitted to the George Town hospital. And finally, the 2011 Atlantic Basin hurricane season was officially over last Wednesday with only Hurricane Rina having any impact here when it passed just under 200 miles southwest of Grand Cayman as a Category 3 hurricane. Even from that distance it managed to move our sunken US Navy ship (USS Kittiwake) dive site a further 60 ft. out to sea.

And, even more finally, the 24 year old student who was critically ill after being hit by a jet ski whilst aboard a yellow banana-shaped inflatable raft was happily recovered enough to be released from hospital and travelled back to her home in New York, USA. Just another ‘quiet’ week on one of the islands time forgot.

Life coaching – a new transition Prepare for 2012

A new business called Transitions Ltd will be offering free life coaching until its official launch in January, 2012.

The company will provide training, life coaching and celebration of clients’ life transitions.

I sat down with the owner of this new venture, Fiona Pimentel, a very beautiful young lady, a native of England who now resides here with lawyer husband. She also speaks fluent Spanish. I asked her what exactly is coaching? She told me it is a process that helps an individual to achieve a particular result in their life or career.

“It is about identifying and setting goals, then making sure that action is taken to reach those goals,” she said.

Being blunt I went straight to point and questioned her as to why anyone would want to listen to her advice and was coaching the same as counselling?

She replied with a smile, “My clients would not be listening to my advice. It is actually the other way round. As a coach, I don’t give advice. I may gently suggest a direction that the client might like to take, but mostly it is about helping them to discover what options are available to them. So, it involves a lot of listening to them. Counselling is for people who have a problem that they need help with. It often deals with going

over past experiences.

Coaching is generally more for people who are healthy, but just want to improve areas of their life or business.”

“Absolutely everyone Fiona Pimentel can benefit from having someone whose attention is entirely focused on them, and whose purpose is to draw out their potential and to facilitate change in their life,” she explained.

She then spoke about her reasons for wanting to become a coach. “I had to read a lot of personal development books for a business I was involved with in the UK.,” she explained. “I loved reading them, and I noticed so many positive changes in my own life, that I wanted to share this experience with others. I had been providing a Christian care-giving service that involves reflective listening, and so the Diploma in Coaching was a natural step for me.

And my final question was on what she would say to someone who is considering using a coach? Her answer was simple. She said she would say, “You will only know how helpful it is when you give it a try. It is free during the month of December, so there is nothing to lose, and a wonderful opportunity to gain.”

Enterprise City grows its local team 1st December 2012 – George Town, Grand Cayman - With the recent vote in the Legislative Assembly that passed the Special Economic Zones Law, Cayman Enterprise City (CEC) is once again expanding its local team by hiring local Attorney Ms Rachel Smyth in the role of Business Development Manager.

Remarks for Minister of Health, the Hon. Mark Scotland Opening Ceremony: Choose to be a Positive Trendsetter “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.”

As you are about to embark on today’s workshop, I want you to seriously consider this simple yet powerful phrase, as coined by the Alice in Wonderland author, Lewis Caroll.

You - teenagers and young adults alike - face increased pressures, and the only way you can secure your future, is by having a clear vision of what it is you want to achieve.

You are growing up in a world that sadly faces multiple interconnected crises – climate change, chronic unemployment, overpopulation and dwindling resources.

It is unfortunately a fact that the adverse effects of these issues will fall disproportionately on you – the next generation. As such, chancing it on just ‘any road’ will simply not cut it.

Fortunately, there is a flip side to this gloomy outlook. Growing up in the 21st century, you are enjoying the fruits of fantastic technological advances and your will have access to extraordinary new careers. You are also coming of age at a time when people are open to new ideas and society embraces the young and innovative like never before.

In the face of all these possibilities, the challenges of being young today are balanced with the myriad opportunities. But here is the caveat: Together with having a vision of your future, you must also ensure that you have a roadmap for a successful path.

But even if you know where you want to go and how to get there, there is a third component of success – staying on course. As any good seafaring captain will tell you: It doesn’t matter if you have set course for a great destination if you find yourself at sea without a rudder and a compass. Translated to your personal lives, your rudder and compass are your ethics and values. These are the things that will not only help you reach your goals, but will make sure that you reach it in an honourable way. Alas, these are not easily defined.

Good morals and ethics are not written down in some exhaustive list somewhere. On the contrary, they are intensely personal and needs constant nurturing and strengthening.

Fortunately today’s workshop will equip you with the skills to recognise your values - to define your own set of ethical rules you want to live by.

This workshop is also designed to engage and challenge you - teaching you to set goals, to chase those ideals and to lead others to success as you become a positive trendsetter.

You might wonder what leadership has to do with success in life. The short answer is that leadership skills such as goal-setting, problem-solving and sound decision-making are key ingredients of reaching one’s goals.

But there is more. Even if you do not aspire to be a politician or chief executive officer one day, being a social and community leader is equally important. A society with leaders is a winning one for leading is not about having the power to tell others what to do, it is about serving others. It is about bringing about positive change and leaving the world a better place.

Personally, I never aspired to become the Minister of Health, Environment, Youth, Sports and Culture. My primary motivation was to serve my community, to contribute to a better future for our country and to steer people and resources in the right direction. Being Minister is not the prize, serving is. And even as I carry the title of Minister, I can assure you that I am surrounded with many leaders in my ministry who all serve to their own capability and strengths.

We are all called to lead, whether by title or in our personal capacities.

For leadership is what is needed for success in today’s world: Leadership competencies will enable you to solve community problems and foster civic pride; Leaders know how to channel their energy and creativity into securing peace and sustainability for their own generation and for the

future, and finally, although in the minority, leaders get to set the trends.

The latter is an interesting and powerful phenomena identified by scientists at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York State. Calling it the minority rule, they found that once 10 percent of a population holds an unshakable belief, the idea will spread like a wildfire. Today, we are looking to you to be that 10 percent.

I firmly believe in your ability to affect positive change wherever you go. For starters, you have a greater understanding of the problems facing other youth. You also have fresh perspectives on how to address these problems and finally, you have the ability to re-energize us ‘older’ people.

Before I leave you to change the world, I must thank the Youth Services Unit and the National Youth Commission for helping my Ministry make good on our promises to our youth. Today’s training specifically fulfills one of the goals set in the 2011 National Youth Policy namely empowering young people as legitimate and active partners in decision-making processes.

Today’s leadership training was developed to maximize the potential and productivity of our youth and to help them develop key skills such as communication, critical thinking, problem solving and human relations.

On top of it, they will also build confidence. In all, this is an invaluable investment in our future and I thank all for putting this together.

However, no matter how much we adults commit, we can only achieve success if the young people of the Cayman Islands rise to the challenge, do their part and meet us halfway.

And so I conclude today with an open challenge to our young people: Show us older folk how you can, want, and will take control of your future.

Students develop computer skills computer science at UCCI. Winton was once in their shoes – he also interned at the Ministry before being hired full-time three years ago.

“UCCI is extremely grateful to the many organisations on the island, especially the Ministry of Education, for their support of our internship program,” noted Dr. Kwabena Asamoah, UCCI’s IT internship coordinator.

“Over the years, the IT wing of the education department has embraced the majority of our computer science interns and provided them with the internship training they need.”

Explaining the main objectives of the internship programme, Ministry ICT Manager Steven Durksen said it allows students to gain valuable practical experience

The 2011 Atlantic hurricane season was a busy one, as predicted by forecasters, but for the Cayman Islands it was generally quiet and free from threats. Between June 1, 2011 and November 30, 2011 there were nineteen tropical cyclones.

Two of these developed into major hurricanes.

Hurricane Rina was the most significant threat to the Cayman Islands. Rina first focused the attention of local residents on October 23rd when it was a strong tropical depression located about 200 miles south of Grand Cayman. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

By the following morning, Rina was upgraded to a tropical storm and later the same day became a hurricane.

The cyclone proceeded to track very slowly to the northwest and on October 23rd and 24th the Cayman Islands National Weather Service issued severe weather bulletins as the hurricane started to affect the Cayman area with rough seas, gusty winds and several inches of rain.

On October 25th Hurricane Rina was located 256 miles southwest of the Cayman Islands when it attained major hurricane status.

The category three hurricane continued to travel slowly

(approximately 3 miles an hour) to the north northwest. As it moved past Grand Cayman, large swells began to impact the south and west coasts. Waves breached the coastal road in parts of George Town and along the West Bay Road. Traffic was diverted as crews from the National Roads Authority worked to clear the road of sand and debris.

The most significant development of the 2011 Hurricane Season was the retirement of Deputy Governor Donovan Ebanks. “It is the end of an era with the departure of Mr. Ebanks,” said HMCI Director, McCleary Frederick, “He has been the champion of disaster risk

reduction and a calm, rational leader in times of crisis. His leadership is appreciated and will be missed.”

Mr. Donovan Ebanks played a critical role in developing Hazard Management Cayman Islands and the disaster risk reduction capacity of the Cayman Islands for nearly three decades. For many years he chaired the National Hurricane Committee and then took over leadership of the National Hazard Management Council.

Mr. Ebanks was at the helm during Hurricane Ivan, one of the greatest natural disasters in Cayman’s recorded history.

Martin O’Neill has agreed to succeed Steve Bruce as Sunderland manager, but he will not take charge of the team for Sunday’s away match against Wolverhampton.

Sunderland have confirmed Bruce’s former assistant manager Eric Black will oversee that game.

The Black cats say they will be making a statement in “due course” on their new manager.

O’Neill has been regularly tipped for vacant posts at high-profile teams in the last 12 months and was the bookmakers’ favourite.

The Black Cats are 16th, two points above the relegation zone, which led to Bruce’s sacking on Wednesday.

The team has won only two of their 13 league games this season.

O’Neill, 59, a former Nottingham Forest player, built his managerial reputation at Wycombe Wanderers before successful spells at Leicester City and Celtic.

He joined Villa in 2006 and led them to three straight sixth-placed finishes in the Premier League and the Carling Cup final before resigning before the start of the 2010-11 season.

He is understood to have met Sunderland’s owner and chairman Ellis Short on Thursday evening in

London to negotiate a deal.

One of the key aspects of the agreement is said to be O’Neill’s agreement to the budgetary constraints at the Stadium of Light.

In the meantime, Black will lead the team against Wolves, who are level on points with Sunderland.

Black said on Friday he was focusing on the match. “Naturally it is a difficult time for everyone at the club, but we have to be professional get on with the job in hand,” he said.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon, who worked under his fellow Northern Irishman at Leicester and Celtic, would welcome O’Neill’s return to management.

Lennon said: “If he gets the job, it would be brilliant to see him back in the game.

“He has a penchant for lifting clubs. Sunderland is a huge club and I know that, as a boy growing up, it was his favourite team, so there might be an emotional tie there for him.

“But I think he is just ready to get back into the game. If he is offered the job, whether he takes it or not, I hope that we will see him back in the Premier League sooner rather than later.”

Raiders’ McClain arrested on assault charges DECATUR, Ala. (AP) — Oakland Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain was arrested Thursday on misdemeanor assault, firearms and other charges after police said he fired a gun during a fight in his Alabama hometown.

McClain, 22, held a gun beside a man’s head during an altercation and the man begged him not to shoot, according to a statement released by Lt. John Crouch of the Decatur Police Department.

McClain, an All American at Alabama during his junior year, moved the gun but fired a round beside the man’s ear, according to the statement. No one was shot, but police said a man who was injured in the altercation drove himself to a hospital, where he was treated and released.

McClain was released on $2,000 bond. He faces charges of assault, menacing, reckless endangerment and firing a gun inside the city limits.

Another man identified as Jerradius Willingham, 23, was charged with assault and released after posting a $500 bond.

McClain’s attorney Billy C. Burney II said the linebacker denies he fired a gun and said he was not involved in the fight.

“Mr. McClain asserts his innocence,” Burney said in a statement. “We are confident that Mr. McClain will be cleared of all charges.”

The Raiders had no comment.

Earlier this year McClain, the 2009 Butkus Award winner at Alabama, reported someone in Decatur shooting at his vehicle.

There wasn’t any indication whether the two incidents were related.

Police said the victim, whose name was not released, suffered injuries to his head and face during a fight with Willingham. He was bleeding when officers talked to him.

“It’s like a family to me,” the 6-foot-1 Kato said as the gym reverberated with basketballs rhythmically hitting the wooden floor. “If there were more programs like this, I doubt there would be riots.”

Complex security plans for the Olympics have been altered after the riots, which shocked Britain and damaged London’s image abroad.

Those plans were also updated after student demonstrations in London that included a spontaneous attack on Prince Charles and wife Camilla and the “Occupy London”

encampment near the city’s financial district.

The riots exposed the limits of what police could handle in terms of dramatic and unforeseen events.

After a weak initial response, thousands of police officers were brought in to help swamp London’s streets in a show of force, discouraging further trouble.

The Olympics will already keep 12,000 officers occupied on the busiest days, so any riot repeat will push resources further still. “(Planners) are learning the lessons from the riots,” said Margaret Gilmore, an expert at the Royal United Services Institute, a respected think tank. “Some

demonstrations and protests are almost inevitable and they are likely to take a tougher line and use more officers in dealing with riots.”

Fears over street unrest come alongside the biggest Olympic worry: terrorism. Security has been an intricate part of the games since a terror attack at the 1972 Olympics in Munich killed 11 Israeli athletes and coaches. London has not been immune from terror attacks — four suicide bombers targeted the city’s transit network in 2005, killing 52 commuters.

But the advent of riots was a late addition to the planning mix, which has been under way for years. Even now plans are still being refined.
