Tad Stoner tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

The assault trial of Bodden Town MLA Dwayne Seymour ended as quickly as it began yesterday when government prosecutors offered no evidence and Magistrate Nova Hall dismissed the case. Appearing for the crown, prosecutor John Masters said the public interest would not be served by proceeding with the charges against Mr Seymour and co-defendant Joseph Minzett, pointing out that the MLA had been acquitted in May in a similar case, using similar evidence. “He was originally tried in Grand Court for perverting the course of justice,” Mr Masters told Magistrate Hall. “Because this was a category three offence, it was severed from that case, to be tried separately.” Saying it was not Mr Seymour’s fault the two cases have been separated, however, Mr Masters said that, while the assault charges “passed the evidential test”, satisfying the crown on one hand, “we must consider the public interest aspect”.

iStrange New Zealand’s penguin visitor starts journey home WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — The wayward emperor penguin dubbed Happy Feet craned his head, flapped his flippers and seemed a little perturbed as he started his journey home to cooler southern waters Monday.

The penguin was moved from the Wellington Zoo, where staff has cared for him for the past two months to the research ship Tangaroa, which will release him after four days at sea at a latitude of 51 degrees south. Happy Feet has been placed in a custom-made crate for the journey and will be kept cool with 60 buckets of ice. He’ll be fed fish. The Tangaroa is New Zealand’s largest research vessel and was already scheduled to head into frigid southern waters to check on fish numbers in order to set fishing quotas. The 3-foot-tall (metre-tall) penguin was found on a New Zealand beach June 20, far from his Antarctic feeding grounds. He was moved to the zoo after he became ill from eating sand that he likely mistook for snow. He’s since regained weight and been cleared to be returned to the wild. Lisa Argilla, a veterinarian who has helped nurse the penguin back to health, said he has a “stronger and stroppier attitude” than when he first arrived at the zoo, when his demeanour seemed flat and his feather condition was poor. “He’s definitely a survivor,” she said.

No evidence offered in assault case Continued from front page

Tad Stoner tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

“The public interest would not be served because of the costs involved, getting witnesses here and putting them up. It is no longer in the public interest to pursue the common assault charges, and we are not prepared to run on that basis. We will offer no evidence today,” he said. Seymour lawyer Steve McField, who gained the May acquittal for the MLA after a highly charged, highly controversial closing argument, thanked Mr Masters and the court. “I am grateful to [Mr Masters] because this is the most sensible course. The great interest in this case was simply that Dwayne Seymour is a member of the Legislative Assembly. I appreciate this sensible choice,” Mr McField told the court. Speaking after Ms Hall discharged the case, Mr Seymour told iNews he was gratified at the outcome. “I feel justice has been done,” he said. “It was the most sensible thing to do, especially with the first part of the case being not guilty for me. The evidence here was chosen from that trial and it was very clear I was not guilty, so this was the most sensible thing to do.” Director Of Public Prosecutions Cheryll Richards underlined that the case against Mr Seymour and Mr Minzett had not been discontinued for lack of legal foundation. “The decision not to continue with the prosecution should not be construed to mean that the crown has formed an adverse view about

MLA Dwayne Seymour the quality of its case against either accused. I reiterate that the crown does not consider issues of public interest unless the evidential test has been satisfied,”” she wrote to Seymour legal consultants FaceyClarke & Associates, She rejected lawyer Margeta Facey-Clarke’s claim, however, that to proceed would have been “an abuse of process”. “Having considered the authorities,” Ms Richards wrote, “I am comfortable there would be no abuse of process to continue with the prosecution. “The crown,” she concluded, “is of

the view that it would no longer be in the public interest to continue with the prosecution” In May, after a weeklong trial prosecuted by Mr Masters, a jury found Mr Seymour innocent of obstructing the course of justice in the wake of a fistfight outside the Grand Cayman Beach Suites. The crown had accused him of ordering hotel personnel not to speak to authorities about the fight between himself and love rival, Miami-based fitness instructor Garrone Yap, suspected of having an affair with Mr Seymour’s wife.

Half of US adults now use social networks SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A new study says half of all American adults are now on social networks, and use among Baby Boomers is growing. A report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project says that of the adults who use the Internet, nearly two-thirds use social networks such as Facebook or Twitter. That’s up slightly from a year ago. Among Baby Boomers aged 50 to 64, 32 percent say they use a social networking site on a typical day. That’s up from 20 percent a year ago. Seniors are also testing the waters of social networking.

Merriam-Webster adds ‘tweet,’ other new words SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Here’s something for your Twitter feed: “Tweet” has earned a spot in the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary. Used as both a noun and a verb, the word describing a post made on the online Twitter message service is among more than 100 new terms revealed Thursday for the dictionary publisher’s newest edition. “Tweet” takes its place among newly included words that reflect everything from high-tech advances to the delicate nuances of family and social relationships. The newcomers include overly involved “helicopter parents,” for instance, and the “boomerang child” who’s returned home in adulthood for financial reasons. Maybe he’s spending his days listening to “Americana” music, steering clear of that lonely “cougar” across the street and hanging out a lot with his best buddy, shaking off jokes that they’re in a “bromance.” And, of course, he “tweets” every detail of it.

Pistol whipping victim speaks out Diana Willington diana.willington@ieyenews.com

The victim of a pistol whipping and robbery has described the harrowing experience and how she now wants to leave the island because she is afraid of what will happen next. Terrified to reveal her identity because of fears of repercussions, the woman has described how the assailant lay in wait for her to return to her home in South Cayman Palms. “Normally I don’t drive my car straight up into the drive,” she said. “I turn it around to shine the headlights on the garden, porch and doors to make sure there’s no one there. “I’ve been doing this since the Estella Roberts incident. I did it on this occasion and didn’t see anyone. I think he was lying on the ground hiding from my car lights. “When I got out of the car I had my handbag and a bag of groceries over my shoulder. The man said “give me the bag” and tried to grab my handbag from me. “I didn’t resist but my handbag got tangled around the handle of the grocery bag and he ended up dragging me around the garden. When this didn’t work that’s when he hit me with the butt of the gun three times on the back of the head and once on the forehead.” The victim was taken to hospital following the attack at 10pm on Saturday where she received numerous stitches but was released following treatment. She added: “My brother sometimes sits on the porch until about 12 midnight but he was feeling tired and so had gone to bed early. I’m glad he wasn’t outside.

“The Journey is the Reward”

“He has kids and the attacker would have creeped up on him and surprised him. God knows what could have happened then. He was lucky, these things happen for a reason.” The woman who has lived in Bodden Town for 25 years and Pease Bay for five years before that, says that she doesn’t feel the same now and thinks that she may have been purposely targeted by the heartless thugs. She said: “I have a salon in George Town and I think that’s why they targeted me. There were three men that came into the salon late on Saturday before we were closing up. “They just hung around and didn’t get their hair cut. I thought it was a bit strange but didn’t think anything more about it. They could have been trailing me from my place of business. “They must think that because I have a business that I have a lot of money. But I take precautions, I never carry much money in my bag and recently because of the spate of robberies, I am always very careful when I come home.” Even though the victim has built her life in Grand Cayman and has family and commitments here, she is still considering leaving because

she just doesn’t feel the same about the island. “Things are going from bad to worse,” she added. “So it’s no wonder people are leaving the island. Every weekend something bad is happening. “He could easily have shot me. When you are staring down the barrel of a gun and you see you’re life flash before your eyeseverything changes.” Elsewhere over the weekend a man was stabbed several times in his neck and body during the Wet Fete party on West Bay Road. He was taken to hospital following the incident in the early hours of Saturday morning but his injuries were not life-threatening. A 25-yearold man was arrested. And in West Bay just after 5am a teenager was shot in the hip on Anderson Road. He too was taken to hospital but his injuries were not serious. Gunmen also struck in George Town in broad daylight, holding up a man just before 1pm and making off with gold jewellery. People with information about any of the incidents can call Crime Stoppers, in confidence, on 800-8477 (TIPS).

The other possibility is that this could conceivably head towards the Caribbean and miss the upper level trough of low pressure that is forecast over the western Atlantic in 8 to 10 days from now. The track model guidance is slowly trending towards that direction and I will continue to closely monitor these model trends. We all know what happened. This is what Mr. Lightbown says: “Needless to say, it is way too early to be confident or certain on any one forecast track. US prosecutor to probe Kosovo organ trafficking PRISTINA, Kosovo (AP) — A U.S. prosecutor will investigate claims that Prime Minister Hashim Thaci allegedly led a criminal network that sold organs of civilian captives during the 1998-99 Kosovo war, the EU’s rule of law mission to Kosovo said Monday. John Clint Williamson was named “lead prosecutor” in a task force set up to investigate the allegations raised in a report last year by Council of Europe investigator Dick Marty, the mission said in a statement. Marty has alleged that Thaci and other rebel commanders of the Kosovo Liberation Army ran

detention centers in Albania’s border with Kosovo, where civilian captives, including Serbs, were killed and their organs sold on the black market. Thaci has denied the allegation and said he is ready to cooperate with any investigation into the claims. Williamson was the head of Kosovo’s Justice Department in 20012002 when the territory was under the administration of the United Nations and was tasked with overseeing Kosovo’s prisons and the justice system. He then served as United States Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues.

Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in 2008, a move that is backed by 80 countries, including the United States and most nations in the EU.

Lockerbie bomber in coma, near death, brother says TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — The Libyan man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing is in a coma and near death, his brother said Monday, insisting he should not return to prison for the 1998 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, which killed 270 people. Calls that Abdel Baset al-Megrahi be returned to prison have increased in the U.S. and Europe since rebel forces seized Tripoli last week. “He is between life and death, so what difference would prison make?” said his brother, Abdel-Nasser al-Megrahi, standing outside the family’s house in an upscale Tripoli

neighborhood. Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, who was convicted for the bombing in 2001, was freed from a Scottish jail on compassionate grounds in August 2009, after doctors estimated he had three months to live. He was greeted as a hero in Libya and appeared on TV in a wheelchair at a pro-Gadhafi rally. His release, after serving eight years of a life sentence, infuriated the families of many Lockerbie victims, most of whom were American. Some critics of his release have long suspected it was motivated by Britain’s attempts to improve relations with oil-rich Libya.

OPINIONS

The Editor Speaks Robberies, stabbings, shootings over the weekend With my headline it could be New York or Chicago. colin.wilson@ieyenews.com Sadly, it was here in the beautiful Cayman Islands. Fortunately, no lives were lost but they could have been. They were all terrifying events for the hapless victims. Congratulations to the police for quickly finding and arresting a suspect to the stabbing. The victim was stabbed several times to the neck and body. Thankfully none of his injuries is life threatening. I wonder what state he is mentally, though? The details leading up to the shooting in West Bay, at the time of writing are sketchy, but if you are at home and two masked men enter with a shotgun I would be terrified. That they shot him and hit only his left hip was, in the circumstances, lucky. The third incident involved a woman who was returning home and an armed man pistol-whipped her several times before grabbing her handbag that contained only her personal items. This particular scumbag is an example of the criminals in our society here today. They are cowardly vermin who prey on the weaker sex to terrorise and hurt them because they get

‘a kick’ at seeing them suffer. It gives these low lives a feeling of power. The final one concerned two masked thieves with handguns who stole jewelry from a man in broad daylight. Thankfully, at that incident no shots were fired and there was no pistol-whipping. It has been a very depressing weekend and we cannot keep laying the blame at our politicians, our police, the media, the churches, the schools, social services, etc. The blame starts at home. It therefore starts with us and I implore once again – it must finish with us. If you have any information on these hoodlums you MUST come forward. The situation can get worse and will get worse. It is difficult to hide a gun. If you are a parent and you see your son (or daughter) with one you must turn him/ her in. If you find a hood or mask belonging to them call the police. You must do it. It is difficult. It is instinctive to protect your children. You will be protecting them more by informing on them than saying nothing. If you are friends with these people – turn them in. They are not worth your friendship. Next weekend could be much worse.

Bush sticks to pay raise promise Premier McKeeva Bush will recommend the reinstatement a 3.2% cost of living allowance for civil servants. In a statement released by Mr Bush he said, “I promised the Civil Service across the board last year that once our finances began to stabilise and recover, I would give them back the 3.2% which had to be rolled back as a result of government’s financial situation. “Because we have done well as a Government, managing our finances, I will be recommending to the Governor in Cabinet, with the support of elected colleagues, to reinstate the 3.2% cost of living, effective by September’s pay day. “I probably will have to talk to the Minister of the FCO as they control our budget, since the PPM allowed this under the PMFL. There will still be tight restrictions on expenditure for this year – and fiscal prudence must continue to be maintained. I am sure I will have to make up the expenditure in saving, but the good Lord will help us through this effort as we try to help our people. “I wish to thank all of the hard working Civil Servants for their help in achieving this and we believe that this is certainly the right thing to do.

Chefs roar about delights of lionfish Though proud and showy in the wild, Red Lionfish make delicious dishes and are now served in Cayman’s best restaurants. The local effort to cull and contain the invasive, destructive fish – which threatens reef life in the region – continues. Especially so, by appealing to the palate of local diners as well as some marine-based feeders. Stephen Broadbelt of Ocean Frontiers demonstrated to ten top restaurateurs the straightforward recipe for capturing, cleaning and preparing Lionfish (described by top chefs as versatile and succulent). The goal is to seek and destroy the predatory Lionfish – especially before they are big enough to reproduce, as they do in massive numbers. The need to reduce the population is critical. From seven months old, a single fish can produce two million eggs annually. In the Cayman Islands, some 5,000 Lionfish have been caught so far this year during routine dives and regular “safaris”. The fish used for today’s demonstration was 15 inches long, less than two inches shy of the world record. Many of the fish were shared with chefs at the event. Broadhouse said local divers are also encouraging sea life in the effort, by feeding Lionfish morsels to moray eels, snappers, nurse sharks and groupers to help them develop a taste for the finned marauders. The education session was organised by the Cayman Islands Tourism Association (CITA) for its restaurant members. Dart are way off target say coalition Tad Stoner

tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

A coalition of West Bay activists are organising to oppose district plans by the Dart-government partnership to close West Bay Road near Public Beach and dig a marine hurricane shelter in Salt Creek. Appearing on Radio Cayman’s “Talk Today” yesterday afternoon, West Bay’s Captain Brian Ebanks argued that a planned “hurricane hold” in Salt Creek should be cancelled, while Alice Mae Coe’s “Concerned Citizens” group will this evening present to the coalition a draft petition to preserve West Bay Road. Mr Ebanks said that government had originally designated as “environmentally sensitive” the Salt Creek area, but “they changed their mind and now have made deals for public land. They want to dig it up, create a hole, put heavy equipment in there, dredge it and bring in electricity and traffic, destroying a sensitive area, creating a shelter for local boats.” Tonight, his “Save Cayman” organisation will meet Alice Mae Coe’s “Concerned Citizens” group and Ormond Morgan’s West Bay Action Committee -- and other members of the community -- to finalise a draft petition to Governor Duncan Taylor. The document asks Mr Taylor to deny permission to the Dartgovernment ForCaymanAlliance to close 2,500 feet of West Bay Road,

Cumber school last week, led by Cadian Ebanks, at least 20 people registered their dismay at the plans, vowing to oppose the plan. Suggesting that Premier McKeeva Bush has overstepped his authority by swapping crown land for private development, Mr Ebanks said he hoped to rally public support against a variety of ForCaymanAlliance proposals, including the road realignment, relocation of the George Town landfill to Breakers and the hurricane shelter, whether in Salt Creek or a Barker’s National Park alternative. “What is being done to the road is unconstitutional,” Mr Ebanks said. “Under section 38, the governor is directly responsible for crown land, the Queen’s land. Nowhere does the constitution mention the premier or the cabinet.” Mr Ebanks hoped the coalition would tap a groundswell of opposition, and indicated ForCaymanAlliance support was soft. “There are a lot of people and a lot of faces down here. It’s just a matter of common sense,” he said. “We are

discussing the possibility of getting the governor to take possession of those blocks and parcels of land between the [Harquail Bypass] and the sea, and rezone it for recreational purposes.” He remained dubious about Dart plans to expand Public Beach, creating an entirely new waterfront park just to the north. “Mr Dart is working for himself, and I am working for the Cayman Islands and Caymanians.” Driving the realigned road, he said would “take an extra 15 minutes, and anyone making six trips, seven trips per week, is going to pay about $1,500 more for gas every year, and that is additional to mileage and wear and tear.” He feared commercial development of Barker’s National Park if Dart were allowed to acquire 72 acres in a land swap in the area. “If the government opens a channel to get boats inside” a storm shelter he said, “it means Dart pays no money to get that land and develop it.”

Irene spares big cities, but Vermont sees huge floods

A truck is partially submerged on Stanton Newport Pike just past Glenville, Del.

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The storm that had been Hurricane Irene crossed into Canada overnight but wasn’t yet through with the U.S., where flood waters threatened Vermont towns and big city commuters had to make do with slowly reawakening transit systems. The storm left millions without power across much of the Eastern Seaboard, killed at least two dozen and forced airlines to cancel about 9,000 flights. It never became the bigcity nightmare forecasters and public officials had warned about, but it caused the worst flooding in a century in Vermont. Many of the worst effects arose from rains that fell inland, not the highly anticipated storm surge along the coasts. Residents of Pennsylvania and New Jersey nervously watched waters rise as hours’ worth of rain funneled into rivers and creeks.

Normally narrow ribbons of water turned into raging torrents in Vermont and upstate New York late Sunday, tumbling with tree limbs, cars and parts of bridges. “This is not over,” President Barack Obama said from the Rose Garden. Hundreds of Vermonters were told to leave their homes after Irene dumped several inches of rain on the landlocked state. Gov. Peter Shumlin called it the worst flooding in a century, and the state was declared a federal disaster area. “We prepared for the worst and we got the worst in central and southern Vermont,” Shumlin said Monday. “We have extraordinary infrastructure damage,” including communities that were cut off, hundreds of roads closures and the loss of at least three historic covered bridges. Video posted on Facebook showed a 141-year-old covered bridge in

Rockingham, Vt., swept away by the roiling, muddy Williams River. In another video, an empty car somersaulted down a river in Bennington. “It’s pretty fierce. I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Michelle Guevin, who spoke from a Brattleboro restaurant after leaving her home in nearby Newfane. She said the fastmoving Rock River was washing out the road to her house. Officials at one point thought they might have to flood the state capital, Montpelier, to relieve pressure on a dam. But by Monday morning that threat had abated. Nearly 5 million homes and businesses lost power at some point during the storm. Lights started to come back on for many on Sunday, though it was expected to take days for electricity to be fully restored. Only about 50,000 power customers in New York City went dark, but people there had something else to worry about: getting to work Monday. The metropolitan area’s transit system, shut down because of weather for the first time in its history, was taking many hours to get back on line. Limited bus service began Sunday and New York subway service was partially restored at 6 a.m. Monday. Commuter rail service to Long Island and New Jersey was being partially restored, but the MetroNorth Railroad to Westchester County and Connecticut was suspended because of flooding and mudslides. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

The competition in the social media and internet communications market is heating up as Facebook implements video calling, powered by Skype, in response to Google’s release of Google+. Facebook, the social media giant who has 750 million active users sharing 4 billion items every day, was pressed to release a video calling feature. By Facebook collaborating with Skype and their 170 million users, together they can tackle their competition Google, ensure Facebook users are engaged, and open up new market opportunities for Skype.

According to feedback, potential Skype users are most commonly deterred by the requirement to set up an account in order to avail of the service. In response, Facebook has linked Skype directly into the website and by simply clicking a button you can place a call. They emphasize that you do not need to create an account, just download a video plug-in the first time you place a call and after that, you can be connected with friends via video calling. Initially, Facebook’s voice calls will be limited to one-to-one which is lagging behind Google+ which has the capability for video conferencing for up to 10 people. On the other hand, Google+ is currently only available on an invitation basis which could hurt its potential. Both of these competitors are working hard to secure their place in the market and release the latest and greatest features.

LIFESTYLE

Dishin’ with Dody Compound butter, easy peach and blueberry cobbler

Dody Denman dody.denman@ieyenews.com

Three delights of the summer bounty are fresh corn on the cob, blueberries and juicy peaches. Another is spending time with my wonderful grandchildren with no thought of bedtimes or homework. I went on a picnic and to the zoo this past week in the company of four g-kids and one of their friends. After five hours of walking in the triple digit heat, the last thing I wanted to do was spend a long time in the kitchen. Here are two fast, easy

TASTER’S CHOICE and good recipes using some of my favourite summer ingredients. There is a bitter argument on the proper way to roast corn…with or without husks. I sit in the middle of the two. I like to remove a few of the outer husk, making certain there are still plenty to cover the corn. After removing the outer husk, gently pull the rest down so you can remove the silk. Replace the husk. Place corn in a bowl or pot that is large enough to cover corn with water. Soak for about 15 minutes to prevent burning. Bring your barbeque pit to

medium high heat. Roast corn, turning on all sides, for about 20 minutes. You want a bit of char on corn as that will provide intense flavour. Remove husk and serve with compound butter. Alternative cooking instructions: 1) Roast corn in 400 degree oven for 20 minutes. 2) Another way to cook corn on the cob is in the microwave. Follow preparation instructions then wrap in paper towel and microwave about 3 minutes per 2 ears. It won’t be roasted, but will still be good!

Compound Butter Ingredients • 1 stick butter • 1 clove garlic, pasted • 1 teaspoon each chives and parsley (or use your favourite herbs) Instructions • Pinch of salt, pepper and crushed red pepper • Bring butter to room temperature. • Add remaining ingredients, mixing well. • May refrigerate or use immediately. Wonderful served on roasted corn, vegetables, or grilled steak.

Summer Camp 2011

We continue our serialisation of Anne by Constance Fenimore Woolson

Anne

“The busy priest gave little attention to the scene”

Part 34

“Will you have some more, then?” said Anne. Tita shook her head, and waved away her sister impatiently. “She is as thorough an epicure as I am,” said the priest, smiling; “it takes away from the poetry of a dish to be asked to eat more.” It was now time to start homeward, and Père Michaux’s sledge made its appearance, coming from a little islet near by. Old Pierre would not have dogs upon his shores; yet he went over to the other island himself every morning, at the expense of much time and trouble, to see that the half-breed in charge had not neglected them. The result was that Père Michaux’s dogs were known as far as they could be seen by their fat sides, the only rotundities in dogflesh within a circle of five hundred miles. Père Michaux wished to take Tita with him in his sledge, in order that Anne might ride also; but the young girl declined with a smile, saying that she liked the walk. “Do not wait for us, sir,” she said; “your dogs can go much faster than ours.” But the priest preferred to make the journey in company with them; and they all started together from the house door, where Pierre stood in his red skullcap, bowing farewell. The sledges glided down the little slope to the beach, and shot out on the white ice, the two drivers keeping by the side of their teams, the boys racing along in advance, and Anne walking with her quick elastic step by the side of Père Michaux’s conveyance, talking to him with the animation which always came to her in the open air. The color mounted in her cheeks; with her head held erect she seemed to breathe with delight, and to rejoice in the clear sky, the cold, the crisp sound of her own footsteps, while her eyes followed the cliffs of the shore-line crowned with evergreens—savage to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

cliffs which the short summer could hardly soften. The sun sank toward the west, the air grew colder; Tita drew the furs over her head, and vanished from sight, riding along in her nest half asleep, listening to the bells. The boys still ran and pranced, but more, perhaps, from a sense of honor than from natural hilarity. They were more exact in taking their turns in the sledge now, and more slowly in coming out from the furs upon call; still, they kept on. As the track turned little by little, following the line of the shore, they came nearer to the mail-train advancing rapidly from the east in a straight line. “Denis is determined to have a good supper and sleep to-night,” said Père Michaux; “no camp to make in the snow this evening.” Some minutes later the mail-train passed, the gaunt old dogs which drew the sledge never even turning their heads to gaze at the party, but keeping straight on, having come in a direct line, without a break, from the point, ten miles distant. The young dogs in Antoine’s team pricked up their ears, and betrayed a disposition to rush after the mailtrain; then René and Lebeau, after looking round once or twice, after turning in their great paws more

than usual as they walked, and holding back resolutely, at length sat deliberately down on their haunches, and stopped the sledge. “And thou art entirely right, René, and thou too, Lebeau,” said old Antoine. “To waste breath following a mail-train at a gallop is worthy only of young-dog silliness.” So saying he administered to the recreant members of the team enough chastisement to make them forget the very existence of mail-trains, while René and Lebeau waited composedly to see justice done; they then rose in a dignified manner and started on, the younger dogs following now with abject humility. As they came nearer the village the western pass opened out before them, a long narrow vista of ice, with the dark shore- line on each side, and the glow of the red sunset shining strangely through, as though it came from a tropical country beyond. A sledge was crossing down in the west—a moving speck; the scene was as wild and arctic as if they had been travelling on Baffin’s Bay. The busy priest gave little attention to the scene, and the others in all the winters of their lives had seen nothing else: to the Bedouins the great desert is nothing. Anne noted every feature and hue of the picture, but unconsciously. She saw it all, but without a comment. Still, she saw it. She was to see it again many times in after-years—see it in cities, in lighted drawing-rooms, in gladness and in sorrow, and more than once through a mist of tears. Later in the evening, when the moon was shining brightly, and she was on her way home from the church-house with Rast, she saw a sledge moving toward the northern point. “There is Père Michaux, on his way home,” she said. Then, after a moment, “Do you know, Rast, he thinks me dull.”

Try our New Ocean front location in WEST BAY

Space station may be evacuated by late November CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Astronauts may need to temporarily abandon the International Space Station this fall if last week’s Russian launch accident prevents new crews from flying, a NASA official said Monday. If Russia’s essential Soyuz rockets remain grounded beyond midNovember, there will be no way to launch any more astronauts before the current residents are supposed to leave, said NASA’s space station program manager, Mike Suffredini. A space station supply ship was destroyed last week following liftoff from Kazakhstan. The failed upper stage of the Soyuz rocket is similar to what’s used to launch astronauts. The launch of the very next crew already has been delayed. It had been scheduled for Sept. 22. To keep the orbiting outpost with a full staff of six for as long as possible, three of the current residents will remain in orbit for at least an extra week. They were supposed to return to Earth on Sept. 8. Suffredini said flight controllers could keep a deserted space station operating indefinitely, as long as all major systems are working properly. But that’s always the last resort: The risk to the space station goes up if no one’s on board to fix potential equipment breakdowns. “We have plenty of options,” Suffredini said. “We’ll focus on crew safety as we always do.” Astronauts have been living continuously aboard the space station ever since the first crew was launched in 2000. NASA considered vacating the space station following the space shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003. Back then, shuttles were still being used to ferry some station residents back and forth. Instead, the station got by with two-man crews for a few years because of the significant cutback in supplies. Even if the space shuttles still were flying — the program ended last month — space station crews still would need Soyuz-launched capsules to serve as lifeboats, Suffredini said. The capsules are certified for no more than 6½ months in space, thus to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

the need to regularly rotate crews. As for supplies, the space station is well stocked and could go until next summer, Suffredini said. Space shuttle Atlantis dropped off a year’s supply of goods just last month. For now, operations are normal aboard the 240-mile-high complex, he noted, and the additional week on board for half the crew will mean additional science research. The Russians have set up an investigation team and until it comes up with a cause for the accident and a repair plan, the launch and landing schedules remain in question. None of the spacecraft debris has been recovered yet; the wreckage fell into a remote, wooded section of Siberia. Suffredini said he hasn’t had time to consider the PR impact of abandoning the space station, especially coming so soon after the end of the 30-year shuttle program. “Flying safely is much, much more important than anything else I can think about right this instant,” he said. “I’m sure we’ll have an opportunity to discuss any political implications if we spend a lot of time on the ground. But you know, we’ll just have to deal with them because we’re going to do what’s safest for the crew and for the space station.”

OPINION

Rev Donovan Myers puts the record straight I welcome the opportunity to provide some context and [hopefully] clarity to my reported contribution to your paper’s vox pox entitled “Do Bob Marley songs have a place in Church?” published on 8/29/11. I am more interested in offering my perspective to the discussion than to be bugged down by the sensational, but I figure that my conversation with your reporter was too long and varied to be succinctly included in this kind of article. Suffice it to say, my response to the discussion was an attempt at broadening the conversation to consider the issue of the relevance of Church music in reaching youth. Consequently, my substantive point is that the discussion probably should not be about Bob Marley’s songs per se but about the Church becoming contextually relevant in its use of music forms. The challenge is for the Church to consider how it presents the gospel to the youth. My argument is that music forms are amoral but we have been socialized to think that the European forms are essentially Christian [because we were evangelized from

Europe]; and on the other hand that “black and Afro” things [e.g. reggae] are bad. I am of the view that the Caribbean Church still struggles with how to incorporate those elements that are African retentions. It was here that I made the point that the Church usually doesn’t accept things until they are old [or have settled] and hence become classics. I went on to celebrate the fact that the Caribbean Church has indeed been incorporating elements of local/regional music forms that are used in worship, but this needs to be ongoing. This follows the historical precedence for the use of “so-called non-Christian music” in the Church. The reformer of the Church, Martin Luther, used contemporary bar tunes to create hymn for the worship in the Church. The first sentence of my reported speech should have read “The real message of Jesus transcends any ethnic [not ethical] and cultural barriers.” That idea was used to support the argument that God has spoken to His world through many different persons over the course of redemptive history, hence we

shouldn’t become hung up on the messenger but the message [for after all, He once spoke through a donkey]. In response to your reporter’s query about whether one can divorce the messenger from his message [my words], I sought to make the point that we must evaluate the theology of any song used in worship to see if it is “truth” as the barometer for its inclusion. The fact is that, though the messenger is not unimportant, her goodness or lack thereof cannot be the primary yardstick, since none of us come to the table with totally clean hands. God uses us notwithstanding ourselves. The sentence about modesty being defined by culture was totally out of context and came from another part of the discussions [almost as an aside conversation where I used the issue of modesty as an example]. It was not meant to be a commentary on the perceived modesty or immodesty of either Bob Marley or his lifestyle. Therefore I wasn’t making a judgement for or against Marley. Let me close by answering the question more directly; “Do Bob Marley songs have a place in Church?” Yes they do. They could provide a hermeneutical lens through which we can view the world and the message of the gospel. They, like many other “non church” songs, could be used to help us understand our context and evaluate how the gospel responds or offers good news. If the question were, “Should Bob Marley songs be included in Church hymnals?”, then my answer would be no. Songs sung in worship should do just that – ascribe glory and worth to God [in His fullness as Father, Son and Spirit]. Marley’s songs were not written for that express purpose. Any song to be used in worship should be thoroughly vetted against the criterion that it speaks to and/or about the God of the bible and God’s redemptive actions in God’s world. Given that, maybe the church should reevaluate some of the songs it sings at present. Donovan W. Myers (Rev.) Savannah United Church

Wind chimes Georgina Wilcox georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com

Writen by : Victoria Anderson

Our revered publisher, Mrs. Joan Wilson, loves wind chimes. She has them everywhere at her home both inside and out. When the breezes and winds blow beautiful music plays around her home. Wind chimes are constructed from suspended tubes, rods, bells or other objects and are often made of metal or wood. Joan has all of those hanging up. In ancient Rome they were made of bronze and called tintinnabulum. Bells were believed to keep off evil spirits and so they were often combined with the phallus, which was also a symbol of good fortune and a charm against evil. Hmm. I didn’t see any of that type hanging on your trees, Miss Joan! However, you don’t often think of wind chimes as being very personal and examining the ones Miss Joan has they don’t carry any personal messages (or other ‘things’). Many people do not know you can actually have a caring message engraved on wind chimes. When this is done they can even become a very meaningful wedding, Christmas, anniversary or birthday gift! You can have a short personal message engraved on the wind chime to express anything you like, especially to your love one. It’s like having your card and gift wrapped in one neat package! Personalized wind chimes can be a keepsake for many years to come. They make a wonderful gift any time of the year.

APPLY SUNSCREEN PROPERLY.

The end of the school year is here and savvy moms and dads by now have made all the arrangements for summer. Summer camps and leisurely days at the pool or beach are just a few of the summer rituals for many families. However if you're tempted to let your child play outdoors for even a few minutes without proper sun protection, you might want to think twice. Adolescence and childhood are critical periods during which exposure to UV radiation is more likely to contribute to skin cancer in later life. Children with fair skin, blond or red hair and blue or green eyes are at the highest risk of sunburn. But darker-skinned children also need sun protection. With this in mind, it’s important that parents teach their children how to enjoy fun in the sun safely.

LIMIT OUTDOOR PLAYTIME BETWEEN 10A.M. AND 4P.M.

Apply a thick, even coat to all exposed areas 20 - 30 minutes before your child goes out in the sun. Choose a sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher. Make sure it's labeled "broad spectrum," which means it blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight. For your little ones, sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide should be selected as these compounds are less irritating than others. Sunscreen sticks are best for the face because they are sweat proof and less likely to drip. Don't forget nose, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck; lips can also burn, so apply a lip balm with SPF protection. Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours, or after sweating or swimming.

COVER FROM HEAD TO TOE. Wearing protective clothing and hats is one of the primary ways of warding off UV damage. When wet, light coloured clothing transmits just as much sunlight as bare skin. Keep your kids covered with dark colours, long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. And don't forget the accessories: sunglasses with UV protection to guard against burned corneas, and hats to prevent sunburned scalps and faces. Protective clothing, hats with wide brims, and sunglasses are just as important for babies. At the beach, bring along a large umbrella.

Parents, you are the best teacher by practicing sun safety yourself. If your child sees you following sun safety rules, he'll take them for granted and follow suit. Teach every member of the family how to protect their skin and eyes. With proper supervision, children can learn to protect themselves and enjoy summer fun without sacrificing the health of their skin.

Avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun's rays are at their strongest. Even on cloudy or cooler days, ultraviolet (UV) rays remain strong. Shady spots can be just as tricky because of reflected light. If your child is playing outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply ample sunscreen.

WATCH OUT FOR MEDICATIONS. Some medications increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, so make sure to ask your doctor whether your child may be at risk. Prescription antibiotics and acne medications are the most notorious culprits, but when in doubt, ask.

Wenger humiliated after crushing defeat

Hat-trick hero Wayne Rooney

Paul Kennedy paul.kennedy@ieyenews.com

Arsene Wenger said he was humiliated by the crushing 8-2 defeat at Premier League rivals Manchester United. Wayne Rooney scored the sixth hat-trick of his Old Trafford career as United went back to the top of the table and left Wenger facing a growing crisis. “Of course you feel humiliated when you concede eight goals,” said the Arsenal boss. “It was a terrible day.” Sir Alex Ferguson said: “He has been a big adversary and will continue to be when he gets his big players back.” Wenger insists it is too early to judge whether his summer transfer policy has been flawed following the departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri and the lack of midfield replacements. But he is now battling to sign reinforcements before the transfer window closes at 2300 BST on Wednesday. Wenger, who insists he will not quit, expects to complete the signing of Monaco’s South Korean striker Park Chu-Young before then. He also wants to sign a central defender and a midfielder, and Arsenal are likely to renew their to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

United players celebrate another goal interest in Bolton centre-half Gary Cahill, having already had one bid turned down. Wenger, who became Arsenal manager in October 1996, added: “We have to find the right players and if we do we will sign them. We have the money and if we find players to strengthen the team we will do it. If we don’t do it, it is because we haven’t found them. “I try to make the right decisions and the two players we sold [Fabregas and Nasri], I brought them to the club. In 15 years I have brought some good players. “You know me, so you should give me some more time to see if I have got it completely wrong.” Elsewhere Manchester City beat Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 away from home and Chelsea managed to overcome newboys Norwich 3-1 at Stamford Bridge. Liverpool beat Bolton by the same scoreline at Anfield with goals from Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam, their first for the Reds, plus one from Martin Skrtel. Manager Kenny Dalglish said after the victory: ““We’re delighted. I thought we played really well, passed and moved and I think we thoroughly deserved the victory. Everybody who came along to watch

will have been very well entertained by the performance of the players. “It’s always nice to score your first goal at Anfield - and even nicer when you come off with a victory as well. Both Jordan and Charlie will get a lot of satisfaction from their goals, but they’ll get more satisfaction from the victory.”

The 29-year-old American is back at the Grand Slam tournament for the first time since that infamous outburst during a match against eventual champion Kim Clijsters. Williams missed last year’s U.S. Open after having surgery on her right foot. Williams played coy at first during a pre-tournament news conference Monday when she was asked what she remembers most from the way her last U.S. Open ended and how “that controversial episode” might have affected the public’s perception of her. “You mean in the singles or doubles?” Williams asked. Then she added: “I just remember I lost, and that was that. I got really popular. A lot of people were telling me they thought I was super cool, that they never saw me so intense. So, yeah, it was awesome.” Asked whether she learned anything from what happened in 2009, Williams replied: “I don’t know. I don’t think about it. Are you still thinking about it?” She rolled her eyes as she continued: “Oh, my God. That was, like, two years ago. This is, like, two years later.”

Vettel powers to Belgium victory

BACK TO SCHOOL!

SPA, Belgium (AP) — Defending Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel won the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday to strengthen his overall lead with seven races remaining.

Silence hurts. If you

SEE something,

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

Vettel started from the pole to win his seventh race of the season and 17th of his career. The German led Red Bull to a 1-2 finish with Mark Webber finishing close behind. “I enjoyed every lap today. The car was fantastic to drive,” Vettel said. “If the car does what you want it to do, this place is really fun. It was a very entertaining race, with the strategy to come in early.” Lewis Hamilton’s slim title hopes took a further blow when his McLaren crashed early on. Hamilton slipped to fifth in the standings. He is 113 points behind Vettel, who leads second-placed Webber by 92 points. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso is third ahead of Jenson Button despite the Briton overtaking the Spaniard late in the race to take third place. Twenty years after making his F1 debut on the same track, seven-time champion Michael Schumacher started from last place after crashing during the first lap of Saturday’s qualifying session. The 42-year-old German drove his Mercedes with style to finish in fifth place behind Alonso. Button, coming off a victory in Hungary, started 13th on the grid.

iSports WORLD Colts activate QB Peyton Manning INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Colts activated Peyton Manning from the physically unable to perform list Monday, clearing the way for the four-time MVP to play early in the season.

The team said Manning will participate in practice on a limited basis on a “scripted” and controlled basis as he continues to recover from neck surgery in May. It’s not clear whether Manning will be ready for the Sept. 11 opener at Houston. Manning has already ruled himself out of Thursday night’s preseason finale at Cincinnati. Manning has started 227 consecutive games, including the playoffs, the secondlongest streak in NFL history for quarterbacks behind Brett Favre.

Bolt to run for redemption

Jamaica’s Usain Bolt reacts after he was disqualified for a false start

DAEGU, South Korea (AP) — Usain Bolt will only need about 20 seconds to show the world he is lightning fast and not just a little jumpy. The Jamaican sprinter said in a statement Monday that he was disappointed with his false start in the 100 metres, which disqualified him from the world championship final. “I was feeling great through the rounds and was ready to run fast in the final,” said Bolt, who has become the face of track and field since setting world records in both the 100 and 200 at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. “I worked very hard to get ready for this championships and things were looking good.” Bolt was looking to defend his world titles in both the 100 and 200 in Daegu. Two years ago in Berlin, he broke both his world records, running 9.58 in the 100 and 19.19 in the 200. Setting another record in the 200 is still possible for the tall Jamaican, who has shown more of his showboating personality on the track in South Korea. The heats are on Friday ahead of Saturday’s final.

“I have to move on now as there is no point to dwell on the past,” said Bolt, who also congratulated Jamaican teammate Yohan Blake for winning the 100 world title in his absence. “I have a few days to refocus and get ready for the 200 metres on Friday. After this I have the 4x100-metre and a few other races before the end of the season. “I know that I am now in good shape and will focus on running well in the 200 metres.” Bolt was disqualified for jumping the gun in Sunday’s 100 final. In years past, being the first to false start would have only given him a warning, but the IAAF changed the rule in 2010 to eliminate any cautions. The worlds in Daegu are the first major championships to enforce the rule, and they caught the sport’s biggest star in the event’s marquee race. “The rules are there. They’re the same for everyone,” IAAF spokesman Nick Davies said. “Usain Bolt of course is a fabulous performer. He’s a star athlete. But we have to be very careful not to stray into the world of show

business where we say, ‘We have a star. The star must be there. The star must perform.’” Although the world was forced to watch the 100-metre final without the biggest name, former Olympic champion hurdler Allen Johnson said only Bolt was to blame.
