Premier McKeeva Bush yesterday said he was a “man of God” - and declared he finds it difficult being both a politician and a Christian.

In an exclusive interview with iNews, Bush admitted he is not the best Christian and that he “fails and falls down” sometimes.

And he says his controversial decision to help churches in Cayman is not politically motivated.

“It is not easy to be a politician and be a Christian,” said the Premier. “I am not the best Christian there is.

I am challenged and I fail and fall down sometimes but I don’t stay down. I know that there is a God and that there is also a hereafter.”

In response to the public and media backlash of the $4.3 million Nation Building grant, which was also keenly scrutinised by the Auditor General’s office, Mr Bush said, “There are heretics and atheists who go on the blogs to criticise. The devil is a roaring lion walking to and fro, that’s what is frightening me.”

A group of primary school students found out why New York City was so good they named it twice.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) sent seven primary school students off to the Big Apple to attend the Fresh Air Fund camp in New York City.

For the few days when they were not at camp, the group stayed at the Marriott Marquis in midtown Manhattan and were escorted by DOT staff, Rhonda Cornwall and Gary Dominguez.

The girls attended Camp Anita Bliss Coler while the boys attended Camp Hayden Marks Memorial.

As well as having fun at their respective camps their trip also included Bronx Zoo, Broadway show Mary Poppins, Governor’s Island and a bit of sight-seeing around Manhattan.

All students and parents attended a meeting at the DOT to share stories and pictures of their trip.

I made new friends in New York and I had a lot of fun. I would like to go back to New York to visit the city.”

iStrange Man hid 7 snakes, 3 tortoises in his pants MIAMI (AP) — The Transportation Security Administration says a man tried to board a flight from Miami to Brazil with nylon bags filled with exotic snakes and tortoises hidden in his pants.

TSA spokesman Jonathon Allen says the man was stopped after passing through a body scanner at Miami International Airport last Thursday.

Security officials spotted the nylon bags filled with seven snakes and three tortoises stuffed inside the man’s pants.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports the animals were taken by the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife. The unidentified passenger was arrested.

Washington man lights beehive on fire after sting LYNDEN, Wash. (AP) — A Washington state fire chief says a man dumped gasoline on a beehive in a tree in retaliation for a bee sting, then ignited the hive, causing an explosion heard throughout his suburban neighbourhood just a few miles south of the Canadian border.

Lynden chief Gary Baar tells the Bellingham Herald that the Sunday night fire caused a large “whoosh,” singed the tree and killed the bees but no people were hurt.

Baar says the man’s friend had been stung earlier in the day.

The fire chief says, “The correct way to do that is to call a beekeeper.”

Firefighters explained that to the homeowner, and the newspaper says it doesn’t appear that that the man will be cited.

The Premier said that politics and atheism is behind the criticism he received for his financial support of the island’s churches. “I always had the church’s support. There are certain atheists in this country that are willing to pounce upon the church and blame the church and I am not going to accept that.” he said.

In his exclusive interview with iNews the Premier said that it was his Christian principles and not political campaigning that led to his decision to help the churches.

“I go to church. I am a baptised and born again Christian. I try to adhere to the tenants of Christianity.

“I don’t just help people that are in my party. I stretch across the political divide. I stretch my hand out to the poor at all times.”

The Premier also accused the opposition party, People’s Progressive Movement (PPM), of failing to assist the island’s churches while they were in power.

“The church is the moral guidance of the island. The Government must partner with the church. The PPM speaks about moral guidance, but yet they did nothing,” said Mr. Bush.

In his explanation as to why the Government allocated $4.3 million to the development of some of the island’s churches, under a plan called the Nation Building Fund, the Premier said, “I have been giving support to the church since the 1990’s when I started assisting with their after school

I meditate and read my Bible and other Christian materials. I was taught Christian values from Sunday school.

My aunt, aged 103, was a Lay Preacher.

“I love to sing, and even lead the church sermon sometimes. I use my voice to bless people and express myself.”

The money given to the church is part of a larger sum, of about $7 million, provided under the government’s Nation Building Fund which has come under strict scrutiny by the Auditor General’s Office.

Questions have also been raised by the leader of the opposition, Mr. Alden McLaughlin, about the appropriateness and justification of some of the fund’s payouts.

Bush’s own church, Wesleyan Holiness Church, received a substantial $1.3 million, however they have declined to speak on the matter or comment on how the money will be spent.

Social media fuels college megaparty DENVER (AP) — An apartment complex near Colorado State University that used Facebook to advertise “the biggest pool party of the year’” got more than it bargained for — at least 2,000 people, most of them college students, showed up.

It wasn’t long before the police followed.

Four people, including two CSU football players, were arrested at the Fort Collins apartment complex on Saturday. Ten people were taken to the hospital, most of them for overconsumption of alcohol or minor injuries.

“Some people came from as far away as Denver for this back-to-school party,” Fort Collins police Lt. Hal Dean said on Monday.

The party’s Facebook page had nearly 3,000 registered people. Dean said police estimated at least 2,000 people showed up at the complex about 65 miles north of Denver. Officers had to shut down surrounding streets while they cleared the complex.

The use of social networks such as Twitter and Facebook to spread word of everything from parties to freedom movements has increased exponentially in recent months. In some cases, the events have led to street trouble.

In Los Angeles in July, a simple tweet by DJ Kaskade telling his followers about a free block party lured thousands of raucous ravers to the landmark Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.

Things turned rowdy, with revelers hurling bottles at police and some jumping on a squad car.

In Fort Collins, firefighters and ambulance crews told police of the out-of-control party at the Ram’s Pointe apartment complex.

A woman has spoken of her horror after armed thieves threatened her and her mother during a terrifying hold-up.

Staff were closing Amwescay Fashions in Shedden Road around 7.15pm on Monday night.

Two masked men burst in and stole almost $800 from the till and the owner’s purse.

Store owner Kathleen Alexis, 40, said she was in the shop with her mother, Medora, when the robbery took place.

She revealed how the gunman pointed his weapon into her mother’s face during the stick-up.

And she has warned fellow store owners to be on the guard as the number of robberies increase.

Ms Alexis said: “I was sitting inside here behind the counter and I saw two men just walk inside, both of them had hand guns.

“One of the gunmen pointed his gun at me and said, give me the money. I gave him about $200 which was all the money that I had in my purse.

“The other gunman walked over to the cash register where my mother was standing and pointed his gun at her.

“After he pointed the gun at my mother he just opened the cash register and took out all the money, and that was almost $600 dollars, or $550.00

“Every time I think about the whole situation that took place, it’s frightening.

“I want to get CCTV and I also want to put in some security measures.

What happened to me can happen to anyone at all.”

Both suspects are described as being of slim build and between 5’8” to 5’10” in height. Both were brown skinned, were wearing gloves and had black t-shirts wrapped around their faces.

The suspect who spoke during the robbery had what has been described as a Caymanian accent. They escaped in a gray Honda Civic.

19 China miners rescued after week, three more missing in galleries relatively near the surface when water poured into a shaft on Aug. 23 from an adjacent, flooded mine. Three had been pulled out alive Saturday and one body was recovered.

The survivors, who were hospitalized in stable condition, were able to keep their helmet lamps operating for the 165 hours they were trapped. They sustained themselves with water that dripped from the ceiling and later nutrition packs sent through a 920-foot (280-meter) pipe drilled through the rock, which also provided fresh air.

The Hengtai mine in Heilongjiang province was ordered shut in 2007 but reopened without permission on Aug. 16.

Murdoch company puts other UK papers under review LONDON (AP) — Rupert Murdoch’s scandal-hit News International confirmed Tuesday it is reviewing journalistic standards across the company, a U.K. media empire that includes The Times of London newspaper.

The British newspaper arm of Murdoch’s global empire has been shaken by widespread allegations of illegal behavior at the now-defunct News of the World tabloid, once Britain’s most popular Sunday paper.

More than a dozen News of the World journalists and executives have been arrested over claims that they

systematically intercepted mobile phone messages and illegally paid police for tips.

Allegations of wrongdoing at other U.K. newspapers have since spread a cloud of suspicion over the entire U.K. media industry. The publishers of the Daily Mirror and the Daily Mail, which both compete with Murdoch’s papers, have announced their own, separate reviews of editorial procedure in the wake of the scandal.

An independent inquiry led by a British judge is also due to put the country’s press under the microscope beginning next month.

In a statement, News International said its internal review was launched “a number of weeks ago” and was being carried out with the assistance of London law firm, Linklaters.

Obama faces tight restraints in crafting jobs plan WASHINGTON (AP) — Hamstrung by budget cuts and a tight debt ceiling, President Barack Obama is preparing a September jobs package with limited tools at his disposal to prime the economy and crank up employment.

At a minimum, the president’s plan will call on Congress to extend current payroll tax cuts and jobless benefits, spend money for new construction projects and offer incentives to businesses to hire more workers. The president’s plan, which he will announce in a major speech next week, will be far less ambitious than the $825 billion stimulus of 2009, passed when the economy was still shrinking and when unemployment stood at 8.2 percent. Now the economy is growing sluggishly but unemployment is nearly a full percentage point higher — 9.1 percent for July.

Economists who advocate for government intervention in the economy estimate that it would take a package of at least $300 billion to avoid backsliding and even more to give the economy a lift.

The Editor Speaks “No” to everything?

There comes a time when saying “No” to everything is colin.wilson@ieyenews.com a formula for disaster. If one says “No, because we have a better plan” then I am ready to listen. We are in a recession. The country is broke. If saying “No” means I will have no money to feed my family and myself who is to blame?

I am still waiting for the PPM (People’s Progressive Movement) to come forward with their plans to get our economy back on track. They’ve said “No” to everything the UDP (United Democratic Party) has proposed. We’ve had a march. We’ve had rhetoric shouting “No” to this and “No” to that which would fill a hot air balloon and take all the protestors for a giant ride in the skies.

Of course, a lot of the arguments the protestors are angry about are valid. Likewise, so are the arguments pro, for exactly the same project and the main one is to raise money to feed you and your family.

The mastermind behind the project is Mr. Dart who has a 100% track record here of keeping his promises. I was somewhat surprised, then, in Captain Brian Ebanks’ comment in iNews yesterday when he said he was dubious about this promise. I would like to have heard his grounds for saying it with something persuasive to back it up. If he gets the support he wants to oppose the project can he also come up with an alternative proposition to provide the same amount of funds we urgently need to feed not only Captain Brian and his family, but also the rest of us?

If we say “No” to everything the world would never change, we would still be living in caves and we wouldn’t even have had the benefits of a wheel. Then we wouldn’t have the need to realign the West Bay Road.

Costs are likely to run into multi-millions of dollars, while construction and commissioning of a renewable-energy electricity plant could take as long as three years and occupy as much as 100 acres of selfsupplied land.

The winning bidder will share the transmission network of the Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC), but pay for its own interconnection to that grid, and after operating any renewable-energy plant for an agreed length of time, may be asked to sell it to the utility company.

“This invitation, though, is absolutely the same as anywhere in the world,” he said. “This will be very routine for some of the alternate-power providers. Some of them provide much greater scales than this, although the regulatory requirements in Cayman may be a little different.

“This is just the start, and for the size grid we have, it is manageable and could create a small industry here, generating jobs and knowledge transfer.

“In general we are excited about this project,” he said. “The general perception is that CUC is not interested in alternate energy, but this shows differently. We are not against renewable energy. We are creating an opportunity here.”

Snorkeller dies off Barkers An American tourist has died after he got into difficulty snorkelling off Barkers.

The 42-year-old man was in the water with his partner when the sea became choppy.

As they made their way back to shore the man got into difficulties and needed CPR when he reached the beach.

His partner administered mouth-to-

mouth and paramedics rushed to the scene just before 3pm on Monday.

A spokeswoman for the RCIPS said: “The man was taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital in George Town where he was found to be dead on arrival.

Police enquiries into the incident are ongoing but at this stage there would appear to be no suspicious circumstances.

The man is the second person to die in the water this month.

On August 10th another American visitor died after completing a dive off a site in East End. As he tried to board a boat with a member of his family he lost consciousness.

He too was taken to hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.

The Belford Estates Community Emergency Response Team (BECERT) presented emergency passes to all its members and got plenty of plaudits from the gathered crowd for their efforts to make the community a better place.

New school year strategies outlined

Education Minister Rolston Anglin addressed a packed Mary Miller Hall at the Annual Education Professionals’ Welcome.

In anticipation of the new school year the Minister of Education the Hon. Rolston Anglin has outlined his ministry’s priorities to the country’s educators.

Filling the Mary Miller Hall to capacity for the Annual Education Professionals’ Welcome, teachers received praise for students’ historic academic achievements. But, they were also told what was expected from them.

“I believe we can do better and I challenge you to raise the bar even higher,” said Minister Anglin.

While the minister set high expectations, the audience further heard how the Education Ministry

and Department of Education Services planned to support them in order to secure the best outcomes for students.

“Professional development is front and centre to my ministry’s goals this year. We plan to invest heavily in our teachers as to ensure that every child has the opportunity to achieve their God-given potential,” Minister Anglin explained.

Other strategic aims mentioned include a focus on literacy and numeracy, new graduation requirements, a national campaign that celebrates achievement, professional standards for teachers, targets for school achievement and a

national strategy to gather education data that will track individual student progress.

Ensuring students’ employability will also come under the spotlight this year with plans to expand vocational education, strengthen career advice and implement a work readiness programme, Work Keys, in all high schools, the minister revealed.

The minister concluded with an update on the school facilities, promising much-needed additions and upgrades to the country’s primary schools. He also said his ministry anticipated that Clifton Hunter High School will be finished in March next year.

Kiwanis President Wiekert Weber said, “Kiwanis was approached by Hurleys Entertainment and we were told that the proceeds of this event would go to the Buy a Kid Breakfast programme. In turn 18 members of the Kiwanis club as well as 8 key clubbers would be there to help with the event.”

Apart from mouth-watering barbeque offerings, there were several art & craft displays. Deal Ebanks was there with his traditionally-carved spinning tops, known as gigs, and Sylvia Ebanks had a fine display of dolls in hand-made traditional Caymanian dresses.

Four ladies from East End Creative Hands traditional crafts group were there too, weaving strands of silver thatch palm into useful and decorative items such as hats and bags.

“We crowned the winner, Low and Slow. The People’s choice winner was ‘Grand Harbour Barbeque.’

“There was Cow Patty Bingo where you had to guess where the cow would poop to win prize. He pooped everywhere except where he was supposed to so the money just went to the charity,” Ms Burke added.

In the early afternoon she stood there now, having made her way up to the height with some difficulty, for the ice-crust was broken, and she was obliged to wade knee-deep through some of the drifts, and go round others that were over her head, leaving a trail behind her as crooked as a child’s through a clover field. Reaching the plateau on the summit at last, and avoiding the hidden pits of the old earthwork, she climbed the icy ladder, and stood on the white floor again with delight, brushing from

her woolen skirt and leggings the dry snow, which still clung to them.

The sun was so bright and the air so exhilarating that she pushed back her little fur cap, and drew a long breath of enjoyment. Everything below was still white-covered—the island and village, the Straits and the mainland; but coming round the eastern point four propellers could be seen floundering in the loosened ice, heaving the porous cakes aside, butting with their sharp high bows, and then backing briskly to get headway to start forward again, thus breaking slowly a passageway for themselves, and churning the black water behind until it boiled white as soap-suds as the floating ice closed over it. Now one boat, finding by chance a weakened spot, floundered through it without pause, and came out triumphantly some distance in advance of the rest; then another, wakened to new exertions by this sight, put on all steam, and went pounding along with a crashing sound until her bows were on a line with the first. The two boats left behind now started together with much splashing and sputtering, and veering toward the shore, with the hope of finding a new weak place in the floe, ran against hard ice with a thud, and stopped short; then there was much backing out and floundering round, the engines panting and the little bells ringing wildly, until the old channel was reached, where they rested awhile, and then made another beginning.

These manœuvres were repeated over and over again, the passengers and crew of each boat laughing and chaffing each other as they passed and re-passed in the slow pounding race. It had happened more than once that these first steamers had been frozen in after reaching the Straits, and had been obliged to spend several days in company fast bound in the ice. Then the passengers and crews visited each other, climbing down the sides of the steamers and walking across.

Recreation area set for Old Man Bay Tad Stoner

This is his first commercial job, but North Side’s US-trained architect Marco Whittaker is pleased to aid his community by designing the 60,720 sq foot, as-yet-unnamed “North Side Enhancement”.

Mr Whittaker, 28, long ago of Chalmers Gibbs and with an associate degree in architecture from Rhode Island College, said the proposed North Side waterfront park was “just something we talked about for a while, and we decided just to go ahead.

“We did some town hall meetings and asked people what they thought, and they all seemed to support it, and afterwards we did some drawings,” he said.

The proposed recreation area, at Old Man Bay Dock, but as yet without a proper name, is 660 feet long and 92 feet wide, about an acreand-a-third, and will incorporate two 70-foot pedestrian jetties, shade areas, covered sitting areas, cabanas, restrooms and a volleyball court.

A new parking lot will be built, he said, with spaces for 12 boat trailers that can head straight into the water, and another 12 for family vehicles.

“At the moment, everyone parks near the launch ramp, sometimes

blocking traffic, so this will help that,” Mr Whittaker said.

“We just haven’t figured out where to put the play area for kids. It will have a jungle gym in an enclosed area to keep the kids safe,” he said.

While seeking formal planning permission, the community group, led by North Side MLA Ezzard Miller, hopes to start initial work in November, gaining a go-ahead from some of the private-property owners, both next door and across the street from the area.

“The land just to the west is crown

land, but to the east, where we want to put four cabanas, is privately owned, so we will ask them. We have drafted a letter to the owner and to the person across the road.

We’ll clean up the area and put in a gazebo, so it will raise the value of everyone’s land, benefiting the entire community”, he said.

The project will require between 12 months and 18 months to complete, and while Mr Whittaker was unable to pinpoint costs, he said, “so far we have estimated, very roughly, something like $500,000.

“We’ll ask the government for help, and hope the rest can be provided through private funding. Well do some fundraising in the community,” Mr Whittaker said.

“Labour will be provided from the neighbourhood, North Side and Frank Sound,” he said and “as a lot of people are still looking for jobs, we are trying to keep it within the community, giving them a little work and maybe they can make a little money.”

Mr Whittaker himself continues to seek full-time work, having been back in North Side for nearly two years after gaining his degree.

“I’ve done a few little housing projects for people, but this is the first thing I’ve done on my own,” he said, “but right now I’m still looking for work.”

I have always yearned to have a hobby for which I could sell products.

The object of my desire was to own a home embroidery machine!

My dream started when I saw a Singer embroidery machine demonstration one day in a fabric store in Miami, and I was mesmerized by what it could do!

I delved into research on the subject of my desire - size, price range, features, quality, hoop size, etc. I went on to the Net, I talked to many people who owned them, got their opinions on what was important, and what was just ‘bonus’ (and usually unused by most novices and home embroiderers).

Finally I bought one. Actually I ‘won’ it. Not exactly. I bid for it on EBay and mine was the highest bid. I was so excited when it finally arrived. The machine already had a few designs preloaded into it, so I immediately began to stitch on anything I could get my hands on i.e. towels, fleece baby blankets, scraps of fabric, even a pair of my boyfriend’s underwear! (Was he surprised the next day when he opened the brown paper package I placed secretly on his car seat.)

My ambition to embroider was unmatched, but what I was really lacking in was the experience and knowledge of the basics, i.e. stabilisers, thread type, needle types, and design density for various weight of fabrics. Most of my early projects look novice and ‘homemade’, the backs have thread nests, there are puckers on most of them, and I had to throw away about a third of the first few attempts.

I needed lessons badly. But where?

There were no local lessons to be had and my time was limited anyway. So, I took to the Internet and researched my options online and found the Designs by Sick website. I was impressed by all the cute designs, and joined the forum.

I lurked and began to read the postings including a yahoo embroidery group, and in time, was confident enough to post messages myself. Mostly, I would stick to ISO (in search of) for various designs I wanted or needed, and sure enough, someone would answer me!

The friendliness and willingness of most group members to help someone they will probably never meet is a real draw to join a good group and become an active member. Since postings can be read and answered at your leisure, it makes for something to do at any hour if you need help or just want to vent that your machine has a mind of its own!

Like most newbies, I think I suffered from the disillusion that if I didn’t download EVERY free design immediately I would never again have the opportunity to do so.

Thus began my freebie downloading binge. I would log onto the computer early in the morning, searching out free sites, joining yahoo groups and panicking that I would have to await approval. Never since college application days did I worry so much about getting accepted! I HAD TO HAVE THOSE DESIGNS!!!!

Hours upon hours of downloading, searching, and hundreds of designs later, and I still hadn’t really stitched out anything worthwhile - but I had those free designs! It took me a long time (and I still will occasionally slip) to come up with some guidelines about downloading what is right for me.

Each person has to decide what designs are right for them, but the

rule of thumb I have developed is, if your immediate reaction to the design is “Ugh!” then DON’T DOWNLOAD it! You are only wasting your time, and computer space, as well as the time you will take to file it. I have several designs that are ugly to me, and while beauty is in the eye of the beholder, if I don’t get happy looking at the designs, and can never imagine stitching them out, I don’t download those types of designs anymore.

I have also begun to realize the benefit of downloading and test stitching ‘sample’ designs. You may see several of the same design (from shared clipart) among many designers on the web. Though the clipart may be similar, the actual quality of the design can only be determined by test stitching.

Density, jump stitches, decorative fills, tension of the design all affect how it will stitch out on your machine. What looks good as an image on your 2D monitor, may not actually resemble the 3D finished product. So, test, test, test!!! If you feel like you are wasting the thread and stabilizer, then use a square of similar fabric to your final product to do it on. Always use the same sized square (I use 9in. squares so I can test stitch up to a 5x7 design on them). Then when you have 20 or more, stitch them together to form a ‘raggy’ quilt or actually sash them to form a traditional quilt and give it to someone - or even better, donate it to a local charity!

Racism is a difficult subject to tackle and our premier, Hon. McKeeva Bush, has made mention of it in recent speeches and even in a knuckle rapping he gave our Editor-in Chief. Of all the places I have visited racism is much less obvious here and therefore I was surprised at his comments.

Our education system would seem to be geared towards a culture free of such racism.

Tolerance toward race, religion, colour, and sexual orientation is taught in the classroom. I 100% support this. We must expose racism and bigotry for what they are.

Racism is based on ignorance, stereotyping and learned hatred. Many people accept that we live in a diverse society today and we appreciate different cultures. Why then are there still large segments of society that won’t accept human capacities are not determined by race?

It is important to understand the nature of racism and intolerance. Together we can end prejudice. It is not an issue that will be easily resolved, and the sooner that we begin to work together the sooner we’ll come to a solution. If children are given the opportunity to develop close friendships with people of different races they will accept people as individuals. There is no room for discrimination. Children are influenced by the world around them.

I don’t hate all the people in the world, I only feel ill towards those who are blind and cannot accept people for who they are.

APPLY SUNSCREEN PROPERLY.

The end of the school year is here and savvy moms and dads by now have made all the arrangements for summer.

Summer camps and leisurely days at the pool or beach are just a few of the summer rituals for many families.

However if you're tempted to let your child play outdoors for even a few minutes without proper sun protection, you might want to think twice.

Adolescence and childhood are critical periods during which exposure to UV radiation is more likely to contribute to skin cancer in later life. Children with fair skin, blond or red hair and blue or green eyes are at the highest risk of sunburn.

But darker-skinned children also need sun protection. With this in mind, it’s important that parents teach their children how to enjoy fun in the sun safely.

LIMIT OUTDOOR PLAYTIME BETWEEN 10A.M. AND 4P.M.

Apply a thick, even coat to all exposed areas 20 - 30 minutes before your child goes out in the sun. Choose a sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher. Make sure it's labeled "broad spectrum," which means it blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight. For your little ones, sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide should be selected as these compounds are less irritating than others. Sunscreen sticks are best for the face because they are sweat proof and less likely to drip. Don't forget nose, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck; lips can also burn, so apply a lip balm with SPF protection. Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours, or after sweating or swimming.

COVER FROM HEAD TO TOE. Wearing protective clothing and hats is one of the primary ways of warding off UV damage. When wet, light coloured clothing transmits just as much sunlight as bare skin. Keep your kids covered with dark colours, long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. And don't forget the accessories: sunglasses with UV protection to guard against burned corneas, and hats to prevent sunburned scalps and faces.

Protective clothing, hats with wide brims, and sunglasses are just as important for babies. At the beach, bring along a large umbrella.

Parents, you are the best teacher by practicing sun safety yourself. If your child sees you following sun safety rules, he'll take them for granted and follow suit. Teach every member of the family how to protect their skin and eyes. With proper supervision, children can learn to protect themselves and enjoy summer fun without sacrificing the health of their skin.

Avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun's rays are at their strongest. Even on cloudy or cooler days, ultraviolet (UV) rays remain strong. Shady spots can be just as tricky because of reflected light. If your child is playing outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply ample sunscreen.

WATCH OUT FOR MEDICATIONS. Some medications increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, so make sure to ask your doctor whether your child may be at risk. Prescription antibiotics and acne medications are the most notorious culprits, but when in doubt, ask.

Crittenton was taken into custody at about 8 p.m. at John Wayne Airport in Orange County after checking in for a Delta Air Lines flight to Atlanta, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said.

Eimiller said he was arrested without incident by FBI agents with assistance from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities were trying to determine whether Crittenton will make an initial appearance in federal court, or be taken directly to Atlanta to face state charges there.

“He offered to turn himself in,” lawyer Brian Steel told The Associated Press earlier Monday. “He’s not guilty. We look forward to getting it to the courts.”

The Atlanta JournalConstitution first reported that Crittenton planned to surrender in Atlanta.

Police earlier obtained a murder warrant for Crittenton in the Aug. 19 shooting of 22-year-old Jullian Jones, a mother of four young children.

Police say Jones was walking with two men when she was shot and they believe one of the men with her was the target.

Youngster from Grenada upsets Merritt at worlds

DAEGU, South Korea (AP) — A memorable meeting — marked by a late surge and a stumble — could be the start of a robust rivalry between Grenada’s Kirani James and American LaShawn Merritt.

James leaned across the line Tuesday to win the gold medal in the 400 metres at the world championships, upstaging the reigning titleholder, who had to grab the back of the teenager’s jersey to prevent himself from falling.

The surprise finish put Merritt on notice: There’s a new kid in the blocks, and he’s pretty good. He’s even drawing comparisons to Jamaican sensation Usain Bolt.

“I don’t want to be the next Usain Bolt,” said James, who turns 19 on Thursday. “I’m happy in my own skin.

I’m on the right track to great things.”

Merritt was a little rusty. This was his first major meet since serving a 21-month suspension for using a banned substance that his lawyer said was the result of a male-enhancement product. He lost steam with about 10 metres to go, opening the door for James.

“He is a great competitor,” Merritt said as the Americans failed to win gold in the 400 for the first time since 2001. “I didn’t quite have a good day.”

Their next major meeting could come at the London Olympics.

Provided, of course, Merritt is allowed to compete.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport will deliver a verdict on the IOC’s “sixmonth rule,” which took effect in 2008 and prevents athletes who receive doping bans of more than six months

from competing at the next Summer or Winter Games. A decision is expected in late September.

“I’m really not thinking about that,” Merritt said. “I’ll deal with that when it comes.”

For a change, there were no fullblown disputes or jumped guns by world-record holders at the worlds.

The only real surprise of the night came when pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia failed to win a medal in her third straight global championship. That’s after a run of seven titles in a row spanning the Olympics along with world outdoor and indoor competitions.

“I lost again. But it’s OK and I’m optimistic for next year,” Isinbayeva said. “The Olympic year is more important. I was just unlucky.”
