Electronic billboards – a new feature in Cayman - are a hazard and an accident waiting to happen according to one driving expert.

The new displays have been fitted at the Hurley’s roundabout and inform drivers about community announcements.

But according to Graham Walker, a driving instructor for almost 20 years, the signs are a dangerous distraction to motorists.

The electronic “blinking” signs change every ten seconds and tell people of community events and important messages.

Mr Walker said: “The electronic displays do not add anything to road safety and anything which distracts drivers from traffic conditions - in other words these displays - are dangerous.”

The signs are being managed by the dms organisation and have been given permission by the Cayman Islands Planning Authority.

Forget the Super bowl – this is the SOUP-er Bowl

Twenty-two local restaurants, delis and food vendors competed for bragging rights to the “best soup in Cayman” during the Big Brothers Big Sisters Soup-er Bowl at the Marriott Beach Resort.

Guests paid $25 for adults or $10 for kids for the privilege of sampling each of the soups, and then casting their vote into a cardboard ballot box.

All the proceeds will be going towards Cayman’s Big Brothers Big Sisters programme The soups were as delicious as their names. The first-place winner was XQ’s Pizza Bar & Grill, with a soup that tasted as delicious as its name: Wood Oven Roasted Yellow Squash Melange, served with sesame crostini Commenting on exactly what makes the winning soup so special, XQ’s Head Chef Andreas Schoenbauer said: “We roasted the pumpkin in a wood oven, roasted the onions together with some cream, some herbs and some salt, and some secret ingredients.”

The children (known as ‘Littles’) are each paired with adult mentors (known as ‘Bigs’). Both Littles and Bigs come from very diverse backgrounds. Bigs do not have to have any special counselling degrees or training. All that is required is that they have the motivation to have a positive impact on a young person’s life, according to the organisation.

Since 1984, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Cayman Islands, a not-for-profit organisation has been “developing positive relationships that have a direct and lasting impact on the lives of young people, according to its published Programme Outline. “Our vision is successful mentoring relationships for all children who need and want them, contributing to brighter futures, better schools and stronger communities,” the publication says.

BBBS presently offers two types of programmes: Community-based mentoring and School-based mentoring.

Community-based mentoring consists of quality, one-on-one time spent between the volunteer and the child for a minimum of two hours per week, filled with shared interests and activities.

In the School-based programme, the ‘Bigs’ meet their ‘Littles’ at the school once per week during lunchtimes.

Musicians killed in Mexico MEXICO CITY (AP) — A masked man opened fire on a band playing popular norteno music Saturday in a Chihuahua city dance hall, killing five musicians, four customers and injuring 10 others. Chihuahua prosecutors spokesman Carlos Gonzalez said the attack appeared to target members of the La Quinta Banda group but the motive behind the early morning shooting wasn’t clear. The suspect, a short man wearing a gray sweatshirt, fired about 40 times with a high-calibre weapon in the Far West disco.

Among the dead was an off-duty police officer, Gonzalez said.

Norteno singers in Mexico have been targeted before, apparently for getting involved with drug cartels, which pay them to compose narcocorridos, or ballads that glorify drug lords.

In 2010, popular norteno singer Sergio Vega was shot dead as he road in his red Cadillac in Sinaloa, a state that has produced many of Mexico’s most notorious drug kingpins. Another Norteno singer killed was Valentin Elizalde, “El Gallo de Oro,” who was shot to death along with his manager and driver in 2006 following a performance in Reynosa, across the border from McAllen, Texas.

La Quinta Banda was well-known in the city of Chihuahua, but not nearly as popular as Elizalde or Vega. Its MySpace account showcases songs mostly about love and parties.

Photos from local newspapers showed the bloody bodies of the band members lying next to their instruments on stage. Four people were killed in another shooting at the same dance hall in August 2009.

Also on Saturday, federal police announced the capture of a leader of one armed gang hired by the world’s most powerful drug lord Joaquin Guzman, also known as “El Chapo”.

Mr Walker added: “Butterfield roundabout is probably the most difficult (dangerous) one on the island closely followed by what is generally known as Hurley’s roundabout.

“It is as if the designers thought to themselves, what is the most stupid and dangerous idea we can come up with?”

Spokesperson for dms, Trina Savage, said that the company had been given approval for the signs by the Cayman Islands Planning Authority, and that the signs were presently up for a “test period,” but did not specify that period’s length.

Ms Savage also said that she was aware of the distraction issue and that one of the stipulations given to the company was that the illuminated L.E.D display should not change too quickly: “Each slide will go up for 10 seconds.

measures, for example, there is also a fade-in, from one slide to another.”

Ms Savage added that the signs were not “regular advertising” and that they contained announcements that were in the nature of “community announcements.”

But former Chief Secretary of the Ministry of District Administration Works Lands & Agriculture, Mr. Kearney Gomez, said he felt the signs could distract drivers.

He added: “The Planning Authority approved the signs but the Roads Authority didn’t, because it’s a distraction. It’s a very busy roundabout and if people are not looking where they are going it could be dangerous.”

Mr. Gomez also said that in this situation the Central Planning Authority didn’t have the authority to overrule the objections of the NRA: “The NRA has the authority in this case,” he said.

In the minutes of the Central Planning Authority meeting on 31 August, when the authority discussed the application for the signs, the following judgment was made: “The Authority considered the matter further and determined that the application could be approved for

the following reasons: “1) Consistent with Section 1.3 (e) of The Development Plan 1997, the proposed signs allow community service oriented organizations to improve the internal communication on the Island.

“2) The Authority does not concur with the Department of Planning, the National Roads Authority and the objector that the proposed signs pose an unsafe distraction to travelling motorists. The signs are 55’ away from the internal edge of the roundabout and are positioned such that they will be viewed in a straight line as vehicles approach the roundabout. The signs and their 18 messages will have been viewed before vehicles enter the roundabout and will not interfere with or distract drivers as they manoeuvre through and exit the roundabout.

“3) The signs will not be allowed to display commercial signage, videos or other moving images.”

The National Roads Authority concerns were also noted, however: “The NRA does not wish to set precedence by allowing signage (digital VMS signs) of this sort on any of the roundabouts. Not only will it be a distraction to motorists but it also could lead to commercial ventures in the future, something that the NRA does not endorse.”

Philippines embassy delegation visits CAYMAN ISLANDS (GIS) — A Philippine Government delegation from its Washington, DC Embassy visited with top Cayman Islands officials this week, with a view to establishing stronger relations and addressing the needs of its nationals.

The meetings sought to clarify the situation of the Cayman Islands being named on an employment blacklist by the Asian country, and to assess the employment and consular needs of Filipinos living here. There are currently 2,548 Philippine nationals on work permits; this number does not include dependants, residents and status-holders.

The Washington contingent included Labour Attaché Luzviminda Padilla, Attaché Sofronio Cortel and Welfare Officer Saul DeVries.

They attended meetings with His Excellency the Governor Mr. Duncan Taylor, Deputy Governor Franz Manderson, Attorney General Samuel Bulgin, Portfolio of Internal and External Affairs’ Chief Officer Eric Bush, Chief Immigration Officer Linda Evans and Department of Employment Relations Director Jennifer Smith.

and positive measures on the protection of migrant workers in the Cayman Islands”. The Philippine Government certifies host countries which they determine are in compliance with the protection of migrant workers.

The issues which the delegation made enquiries about during their Cayman visit included local labour and social legislation, evidence of Cayman being signatory to international labour standards, and statistics or judgements relating

to Filipinos. In turn, they were provided with copies of several relevant laws and other documents.

The delegation also attended a lunch hosted by the Chamber of Commerce.

This visit follows a Consular Outreach Mission to the Cayman Islands last December by representatives of the Philippine Embassy in Havana, Cuba.

At that time, 299 Filipinos took advantage of the opportunity to regularise travel documents and

address issues such as passport renewals and replacements, validity extensions, and applications for reacquisition of Philippine citizenship.

The Cayman Islands Government expressed confidence that, after reviewing the information provided, the Philippine Government will remove the Cayman Islands from the blacklist. The British Embassy will be following up with the Philippine authorities and representing the Cayman Islands’ concerns.

Queen celebrates 60 years on throne LONDON (AP) — Queen Elizabeth II marked 60 years on the throne Monday with a message thanking all those who have supported her over her reign and reaffirming her dedication to serving the British people.

Tributes from British officials poured in to honour the 85-yearold monarch on Accession Day. She ascended the throne when her father, George VI, died on Feb. 6, 1952 and is the longest-serving monarch after Queen Victoria, who reigned for more than 63 years.

festivities to celebrate her milestone, the queen said she and her husband have been “deeply moved” to receive so many kind messages about her Diamond Jubilee.

“I am writing to thank you for the wonderful support and encouragement that you have given to me and Prince Philip over these years,” she wrote in a message to the nation. “In this special year, as I dedicate myself anew to your service, I hope that we will all be reminded of the power of togetherness and the convening strength of family, friendship and

good neighbourliness, examples of which I have been fortunate to see throughout my reign.”

The queen’s Diamond Jubilee will be feted with a series of regional, national and international events throughout 2012.

Over the course of 2012, members of the royal family — including Prince William and his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge — will fan out across the globe and travel to Commonwealth countries including Canada, Jamaica and Belize. The queen and Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, will stay closer to home, touring

the U.K. from March to July.

The 2012 Diamond Jubilee weekend will be held from June 2-5, with the main highlight likely to be a huge pageant on the Thames river featuring a 1,000-strong flotilla.

Elizabeth expressed hope that the coming year will be a time to give thanks “for the great advances” since she took the throne and “look forward to the future with a clear head and warm heart.”

Ten ready to kick-off Enterprise City

The multi-million-dollar Cayman Enterprise City (CEC) has announced that by the end of this month, 10 companies will open their doors, kicking off operations in the special economic zone.

The companies will not be quartered in the zone, which is due for groundbreaking sometime between April and June, but instead will open in local George Town office buildings.

In speeches at CEC’s Friday night “launch”, Premier McKeeva Bush and Enterprise City CEO Jason Blick both described their excitement at the economic growth promised by the project, although they appeared to differ on what offices were available.

“The Special Economic Zone (SEZ) will bring a multitude of opportunities to Cayman, although it is several months away until the first phase” opens, Mr Bush said, but, meanwhile, “we are getting four office buildings”.

Mr Blick, however, while thanking Cayman authorities for the September passage of the Special Economic Zone Law said ”we have approval for five office buildings while we build,” 1 million square feet of office space in the Savannah-Newlands area.

“The first building,” Mr Bush said, “is now being fitted out for the IT (information technology ) and new media sections, which will enable the first tenants to set up right away -and that is good news.”

Likely to be completed within 24 months, CEC, he said, promised “economic and educational opportunities, and opportunities for young people if they apply themselves.

“It was just in July 2011 we signed our memorandum of understanding, in September the SEZ Law was passed and in December the SEZ was established,” he said, anticipating “the opportunity for government to bring diversity to our economy”.

That diversification, he said, has been a frequent theme for successive administrations, which have unsuccessfully sought to move away from reliance only on tourism and financial services.

“Already,” he said, CEC “has trained 20 full-time staff, the vast majority of which are Caymanians. That is the kind of result we like to see, and to encourage investors and their investments.

“We are ready to attract the Fortune 500 companies. This is the best jurisdiction to be in. This government stands behind business. Without it and its people, we won’t get anywhere,” he said.

Mr Blick alluded to his sister Dubai SEZ project, the Multi-Commodities Centre, which, he was told in 1999, could not work because it was “too hot, too foreign and just too Arab.”

“But in 2000,” he said, “companies started to come, and now we have 24,000 people working there, 1,500 in Media City alone. In only six years, we have built 63 skyscrapers and, on average, have signed up 100 companies per month.”

Preparing for the IT industry, Mr Blick said, “We have sat down and talked to IBM, Oracle, Cisco and Johnson & Johnson, and asked them “what can we do to bring you to Cayman?’ We offer innovation, education and research and development.”

Dubai, he said, is built on 300 million square feet. By comparison, CEC, with only 1 million square feet, “will be tiny”, Mr Blick said, but “SEZs are tried, tested and proved. They work.”

Asked about the difficulties faced by the Dubai economy in the last two years, one CEC spokesman pointed out that 40% of the country’s GDP was generated in the MultiCommodities Centre. ”We will create a better and brighter future and a centre of excellence and innovation,” Mr Blick finished. “and every Caymanian will have an opportunity to develop themselves.

We are creating a foundation for Cayman’s future.”

Blast kills husband of missing Utah woman and two boys GRAHAM, Wash. (AP) — Days after a judge ruled against him in a child custody hearing, a father of two young boys apparently blew up a house Sunday with all three inside — a tragic ending to a bizarre, long-running case that began when the man’s wife went mysteriously missing in Utah.

A Child Protective Services worker brought the two boys to Josh Powell’s home for what was to be a supervised visit, and Powell let his sons inside — but then blocked the social worker from entering, Graham Fire and Rescue Chief Gary Franz told The Associated Press.

The social worker called her

supervisors to report that she could smell gas, and moments later the home exploded. What’s left of the house was still smoking Sunday afternoon, and fire crews were mopping up the scene.

Sgt. Ed Troyer, Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman, said emails Powell sent authorities seemed to confirm the Powell planned the deadly blast. Troyer didn’t elaborate on the contents of the emails.

Jeffrey Bassett, who represented Powell in the custody case, said he received a three-word email from his client just minutes before Powell and the two boys died. It said, “I’m

sorry, goodbye.”

The email arrived at 12:05 p.m.

Sunday, about 10 minutes before the explosion, but he didn’t see it until two hours later, when others told him Josh and the boys had been killed.

Indonesia to hit train roof riders with nasty goop JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia has another bizarre way to keep commuters off the roofs of trains: swat them with brooms drenched in putrid goop.

“For anyone who is still up there, it’ll be like a whip,” said Ahmad Sujadi, of the state-run railway, PT Kereta Api Indonesia. The contraptions will be installed at select crossings this week.

Indonesia has tried just about everything to keep passengers from clamoring atop trains that crisscross its main island of Java: spraying them with paint guns, calling in sniffer dogs, and asking for help from Muslim clerics.

The first tactic that worked was deployed last month.

Grapefruit-sized concrete balls were suspended on chains from a frame that looks like a soccer goal. “Rail surfers,” realizing they could be knocked in the head or even killed, quickly called it quits.

The concrete balls can only be suspended over non-electric tracks, but no rail-surfing deaths have occurred where they are in place.

Buoyed by that success, railway officials decided to try the brooms as well.

They’ll be set up along the line linking the capital, Jakarta, and the

West Java town of Bogor.

Sujadi, who didn’t disclose the ingredients of the smelly goop, said he was unaffected by criticism for all the strange and strict security measures.

Venice rebels against cruise ship intrusions VENICE, Italy (AP) — It’s a matter of perspective. From aboard a 12-deck cruise liner, the sight of St. Mark’s Square, the Doge’s Palace and Bridge of Sighs gliding past from a cabin balcony is a breathtaking thrill.

But against the backdrop of Venice’s storied canals and Byzantine architecture, these floating condominiums present a jarring sight, out of scale and sync with the surroundings.

Critics point not only to a threat of accidents, but also air and water pollution, and the injection of an additional 2 million more tourists a year into a city already under constant siege.

The city wants to reroute cruise ships arriving in Venice so they stay

farther from St. Mark’s and other prominent monuments as a possible step toward keeping them out of the lagoon altogether. And UNESCO, the U.N. culture organization, charges that the liners cause water tides that erode building foundations and pollute waterways.

The Editor Speaks What a packed weekend

It was a packed weekend.

For us in Cayman we had the fabulous John Legend Concert at Camana Bay that was packed (as my wife says) “to capacity”. Whether you like Mr. Legend’s music or not you have to admit he is a very real professional entertainer. He has stage presence and he really knows how “to milk the crowd”. I am sure nearly everybody there thoroughly enjoyed the event.

Art at the Governor’s was another well attended and fascinating event. I say fascinating because I cannot paint or do craftwork of any sort but I can appreciate how individuals are so talented. They not only have a vision but they are able to use their hands and make the picture in their mind come to life. Most of these talented people make very little in monetary gains – their biggest prize is seeing us, the not so talented ones – express amazement at their achievements. As a playwright, that cannot make a living from my writing, the reward is the applause.

We also had the Big Brothers Big Sisters Cayman Islands 4th Annual Soup-er-Bowl that was held at the Marriott Beach Resorts. Another well attended event with lots of different soups to taste. Our reporter, who attended the event, said his tummy was very full and was not altogether happy at all the differing flavours it was having to deal with!

I hope a lot of money was raised for this very worthy cause.

And we mustn’t forget there was another Super Bowl.

The New York Giants managed to scrape a 21-17 victory over the more fancied New England Patriots. All the Bars over the three islands were full and it was almost like being at the actual game. There were special promotions and menus including drinks and the cheers and groans were very loud depending upon which team you were supporting.

The RCIPS were also busy and had a very good day.

A routine police search in the early hours of Sunday morning in the Windsor Park Area arrested two males (one was only 16) on suspicion of possession of an unlicensed firearm following a search. A firearm was

recovered. It is shocking that teenagers decide at such an early age they are going to partake in a life of crime.

“If our economies are not growing, the opportunity, the resources to be able to address poverty is going to be absent. So that economic growth is a primary focus now of our bank and a number of other financial institutions that are operating in our region,” Mr. Smith said.

Rescuers dig to reach trapped in Philippines quake

Map locates a 6.8-magnitude quake in the Philippines

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Rescuers dug with picks and shovels trying to reach dozens of people trapped under houses collapsed by a strong earthquake Monday that shook a central Philippine island and set off landslides.

At least 13 people were killed and 40 are believed missing, most of them along the shore near the epicentre of the 6.9-magnitude quake that struck in a narrow strait just off Negros Island.

In the mountain village of Planas, 9 miles (15 kilometers) from coastal Guihulngan town in Negros Oriental province, as many as 30 houses were buried with at least 40 residents believed trapped, said Gov. Roel Degamo.

“Their situation is bad because if you are covered by landslide for one hour, two hours, how can you breathe?” Mayor Ernesto Reyes said. “But we just hope for the best, that there are still survivors.”

Army troops and police were deployed to help in the rescue.

At least 10 people were confirmed dead in Guihulngan, including students at a college and an elementary school and others in a town market that collapsed, Reyes said. About 100 were injured.

Food and medicines were waiting in the provincial capital of Dumaguete, but the aid could not reach the villages in need because of damaged roads and bridges.

“There is a Canadian and an Indian doctor who are here for an earlier scheduled medical mission and it’s good that they are helping us,” said Reyes. “They have some medicines with them but that may not be enough.”

Nine bridges were damaged in Negros Oriental, including four that were not passable, said Gov. Degamo. The worst damage was concentrated in the province’s mountainous northern portion, he said.

Philippine seismologists briefly issued a tsunami alert for the central islands. Huge waves washed out five

bamboo and wooden cottages from a beach resort in La Libertad, but there were no reports of injuries, said police Superintendent Ernesto Tagle. Elsewhere along the coast, people rushed out of schools, malls and offices.

Two people died in another town close to the epicentre, Tayasan, including a child when a concrete fence of a house collapsed, said Benito Ramos, head of the Office of Civil Defense.

Another child was killed in a church when a wall collapsed during a funeral in Negros Oriental’s Jimalalud town, Mayor Reynaldo Tuanda said. Tayasan police officer Alfred Vicente Silvosa told AP by phone that aftershocks were preventing people from returning to their homes.

“We are outside, at the town plaza. We cannot inspect buildings yet because it’s dangerous,” Silvosa said. “I felt the building shaking, so I rushed out of the building.

Our computers, shelves, plates, the cupboards, water dispenser all fell.”

A three-story office building also collapsed in La Libertad, but occupants escaped.

Negros Oriental police chief Edward Carranza said the temblor damaged many houses in Guihulngan and he ordered his

men to help displaced residents find shelter.

Officials in some areas suspended work and canceled classes. Power and telecommunications were knocked out in several places.

Carranza said police rushed out of his building when the quake struck.

“All my personnel ran out fearing our building would collapse,” he said.

“Now it’s shaking again,” he said as an aftershock hit. “My keychain is dancing.”

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered 44 miles (72 kilometres) north of Dumaguete city on Negros and hit at a depth of 29 miles (46 kilometres). The area is about 400 miles (650 kilometres) southeast of the capital, Manila.

The Philippines is in the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where earthquakes and volcanic activity are common.

A 7.7-magnitude quake killed nearly 2,000 people in Luzon in 1990.

The latest quake was set off by movement in an undersea fault, said Renato Solidum of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. Negros was rocked by an 8.2-magnitude quake in 1948 but it did not cause additional massive damage because the region was still reeling from the devastation of World War II, he said.

Gardening fever comes to Red Bay Primary It’s nothing but fresh produce for the Gardening Club and Brownies at Red Bay Primary.

The school is proud to be boasting two significant vegetable gardens on its campus. The Gardening Club is run by Mrs. Paulette Williams, a support assistant and Mrs. Simone Ross, art teacher. The club meets on Fridays from 3.15-4pm and has 25 students who participate weekly.

The Gardening Club has been so successful that during its inception students began giving away their produce to parents and peers. The students of the Garden Club also take home samples of their work.

The garden boasts tomatoes, lettuce, rosemary, black mint, seasoning peppers, callaloo and scotch bonnet to name a few.

Mrs. Williams, who has a passion for gardening and began the initiative at the school, notes, “The children have become so enthusiastic about the Gardening Club they are asking their parents to start a garden at home.”

Mrs. Ross commented on the enthusiasm of the children by saying, “Each of the kids loves to come into the garden. They are thrilled to plant the seeds, to see the plants grow and eventually to be able to pick vegetables from the garden.”

The Brownie Troop at Red Bay Primary School gives the Gardening Club a little competition. The group with approximately 40 members is chaired by Mrs. Dawn Largie.

The Brownie garden was created to teach the girls how to grow their own produce and to promote healthy eating. Mrs Largie said, “The garden is a great way for students to learn responsibility and to demonstrate care and nurturing.”

The plant boxes for the Brownie Garden were donated by Webster’s Tours. Mr. Kenneth Webster from the company said, “We are delighted to be a part of the Brownie Club’s garden at the school. We came out to assist and were inspired to create our own backyard garden! It is truly amazing the produce they grew.”

Healthy eating for a healthy pregnancy

Congrats on your pregnancy! Making healthy choices is even more important now that you are having a baby. Eating healthy while you are pregnant will ensure the baby gets the nutrition it needs to grow as well as to lower your chances of having health problems during pregnancy such as low iron or high blood pressure.

Healthy weight gain is the first step in ensuring both you and the baby remain as healthy as possible. There is a misconception that a pregnant woman needs to “eat for two”. In fact, pregnancy only requires on average an additional 400 kcals per day. This is the equivalent of a yogurt and slice of toast with peanut butter or two additional small snacks per day – not double portion sizes! Healthy weight gain during pregnancy depends on what your pre-pregnancy weight and BMI was. If you had a pre-pregnancy BMI in the healthy range (18.5 to 24.9 kg/m2) then 25-35 lbs is a healthy weight gain during pregnancy. Generally the lower your weight before getting pregnant the more weight you will need to gain while pregnant.

There are some key nutrients that a pregnant woman needs to be aware of. First is folic acid. Folic acid is a vitamin that helps to reduce the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs). It is important to take extra folic acid before becoming pregnant (400 mcg/day) and continue throughout the duration of the pregnancy (minimum 600 mcg/ day). While folate is found in leafy green vegetables and whole grains, due to the higher needs during pregnancy, it is recommended that you get this nutrient from a pre-natal supplement in addition to consuming a diet high in vegetables.

Iron needs also increase during pregnancy to 27 mg per day (compared to 18mg in non-pregnant women).

Iron is a nutrient that helps build the red blood cells that carry oxygen and iron to the baby. Good sources of

iron are meats, whole grains, beans and lentils. However, even a wellbalanced diet generally does not provide a sufficient amount of iron so a pre-natal vitamin is essential to help you get the additional iron required during pregnancy.

Calcium is another nutrient that pregnant women need to be concerned about. Daily requirements for calcium during pregnancy are 1000mg, the equivalent of 3 cups of milk. If you are not a milk drinker, then calcium can be obtained from cheese, yogurt, Salmon with bones, fortified orange juice and calcium-set tofu; however, it can be difficult to meet calcium needs from these foods alone. For many women a supplement ensures the recommended daily amount is met.

Omega-3 fatty acids are important for the development of the baby’s brain, nerves and eyes. Plant-based sources of omega-3 fatty acids can be found in walnuts, flax seed and soybean.

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in high amounts in fatty fish, such as salmon, trout and sardines. It is recommended that pregnant women eat 5oz of high omega-3 fish each week. Fish is a healthy food to eat while pregnant though some precautions need to be taken. Do not consume raw or undercooked fish as this can increase the risk of food borne illness. Some fish are also high in mercury and should be avoided. High mercury fish include swordfish, albacore tuna, grouper and king mackerel.

To further reduce the risk of food borne illness, especially Listeria, it

is also important to avoid eating unpasteurized cheese such as brie, camembert and goat’s cheese. Pate, some deli meats and smoked fish products also increase the risk of food poisoning. To further protect yourself also avoid raw sprouts, especially alfalfa sprouts, unpasteurized apple cider, foods made with raw or lightlycooked eggs and undercooked meats and poultry.

Caffeine is also of concern for pregnant women. Small amounts can still be consumed though only 200 mg per day. This is the equivalent of two 250 mL (8oz) cups of coffee. Keep in mind that tea, colas, and chocolate also contain caffeine.

Seventeen dead, 13 rescued after migrant boat capsizes SABANA DE LA MAR, Dominican Republic (AP) — Rescuers scouring the white-capped waters off the Dominican Republic’s coast have found 17 bodies and 13 survivors from a boat overloaded with migrants that capsized almost two days ago, officials said.

The boat carrying about 70 migrants from the Dominican Republic to the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico capsized before dawn Saturday morning and rescuers said hopes were fading for finding more survivors as search efforts were suspended because of darkness late Sunday.

“Tomorrow the sea will start to return the bodies,” said Jeffrey Pimentel, head of firefighters at Sabana del Mar, 95 miles (150 kilometers) northeast of Santo Domingo.

Luis Castro, intelligence director of the Dominican Navy, said the bodies of 12 men and five women have been found.

Thirteen survivors were rescued.

The suspected captain of the smuggler’s boat has been detained, he said.

Castro said that rescue efforts would resume Monday morning, but “it is difficult for anyone to survive two days swimming” under a burning sun.

Survivors said dozens of people plunged into the water when the boat, known as a “yola,” capsized.

on GlobeOp with the approval of GlobeOp Independent Directors since January 14.

SS&C added that there can be no certainty that an offer will be made, nor, if made, that a transaction will result. The company added that it will make a further announcement at the appropriate time.

It was on last Wednesday that

U.S.-based private equity firm TPG offered 435 pence per share in cash for GlobeOp, with a total value of about 508 million pounds.

Mistakes cost Patriots: Giants win Super Bowl 21-17 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The New England Patriots’ three star receivers couldn’t make the big plays when they needed them.

Neither could their superstar quarterback.

There was plenty of blame to go around in the Patriots’ second Super Bowl loss in four years, both to the New York Giants.

“We had opportunities to put this team away and we didn’t,” wide receiver Deion Branch said after Sunday night’s 21-17 loss. “All the plays were big.”

From the Patriots’ first offensive play — Brady’s deep pass from the end zone to nobody that resulted in a safety for intentional grounding — to their last — a desperation heave into the same end zone — they made mistakes and wasted opportunities.

None, however, loomed as large as Brady’s pass up the left side to a wide-open Welker at the Giants 20yard line with the Patriots ahead 17-15 and just over four minutes left.

The throw wasn’t perfect. Welker had to twist his body to reach it.

But he did get two hands on it as he was falling backward and blamed himself for failing in a critical situation. “It’s one of those plays I’ve made 1,000 times,” he said. “It comes to the biggest moment of my life, and (I) don’t come up with it.”

On the next play, Brady threw

behind Branch over the middle.

“Every play is important,” Branch said. “Had I made the catch that was behind me, that could have been a key third down (conversion) but we didn’t connect on it.”

So the Patriots punted and Eli Manning led the Giants on an 88yard drive with Ahmad Bradshaw going in from 6 yards for a 21-17 lead with 57 seconds left. The defense let him score so Brady could get the ball back with enough time for a long shot comeback. He did get the ball to his 44-yard line with 5 seconds left. Time enough for one pass into the end zone.

Hernandez and Gronkowski were there with three Giants. The ball was tipped and fell to the ground away from a lunging Gronkowski. The Giants celebrated as purple confetti fell. Brady removed his helmet and walked off the field.

“I felt like I was close,” Gronkowski said. “But close isn’t there.” It was quite an ending for a team that had the second-ranked passing game in the NFL. Welker led the league with 122 receptions, Gronkowski set a single-season record with 17 touchdown catches by a tight end and Hernandez had 79 catches while operating out of the tight end, wide receiver and running backs spots. Had the All-Pro been healthy, the Patriots certainly would have had a better chance.

But they still believed that Brady could lead them to a winning touchdown in the final minute.

Danny Woodhead, whose 4-yard touchdown catch gave the Patriots a 10-9 lead just before halftime.

Hernandez caught a 12-yard scoring pass that made it 17-9.

He also led the Patriots with eight receptions, including an 11-yarder that put the ball at their 44-yard line with 17 seconds left. But Brady’s next three passes on the game’s last three plays all fell incomplete.

“It always comes down to one or two plays in this game and if you make it, you’re celebrating,” Brady said. “If you don’t, then you don’t sleep for a week.”

Plenty of Patriots should be tossing and turning for a while.

They forced three fumbles, but the Giants recovered two of them and the third was nullified because they had 12 men on the field.

The missed chance that got the most attention was the drop

by Welker on a catchable, if not accurately thrown, ball. Had he caught it, the Patriots would have had a chance to make it a twopossession game.

“There’s a lot of opportunities to miss out on,” he said. “We definitely had ours and didn’t take advantage. I’m right there at the top of the list.” But Brady is confident that he and Welker will be a successful pairing again.

“He’s a hell of a player,” Brady said. “I’ll keep throwing the ball to him for as long as I possibly can.

James, Heat hold back Raptors, 95-89 MIAMI (AP) — LeBron James scored 30 points, Dwyane Wade had 25 and the Miami Heat survived a shaky fourth quarter to beat the Toronto Raptors 95-89 on Sunday afternoon.

Chris Bosh scored 12 points against his former team, which saw a 15-point edge trimmed to three in the final minutes but never surrendered the lead. Mario Chalmers added 11 for Miami.

DeMar DeRozan scored 25 for the Raptors, who got 17 apiece from Jerryd Bayless and Linas Kleiza.

Miami won for the 10th time in its last 12 games and moved within one game of Chicago for the best record in the Eastern Conference. The Bulls and Heat both have six losses, and Miami has two games in hand.

Kleiza’s 3-pointer with just under 5 minutes left got Toronto within eight, and another 3 from Bayless as the shot clock expired on the next Raptors’ possession cut the Miami lead to 8580 — the closest the game had been since early in the third quarter.

So the next time he touched the ball, he didn’t give the Raptors a chance to foul him — his steal and two-handed slam with 2:07 left restored some breathing room, giving Miami an 89-82 edge and all but sealing the win.

James — who leads the NBA in firstquarter scoring this season (9.1 points a game) — got off to another big start, making his first five shots and scoring 12 points in the opening quarter. He’s now shooting just under 60 percent in first quarters this season.

So while scoring wasn’t an issue, the Heat were far from in the clear.

“This team thrives on turnovers,” Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. “And once they get in the open floor, you can cancel Christmas.”

Paul Lawrie wins Qatar Masters DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Former British Open champion Paul Lawrie chipped in for an eagle and a birdie on his way to winning the wind-shortened Qatar Open on Sunday, shooting a 7-under 65 to hold off Jason Day and Peter Hanson.

Lawrie finished with a 15-under total of 201 to win his seventh European Tour event and his second in Qatar.

Day (65) and Hanson (67) tied for second, four strokes back.

It was Lawrie’s second victory in a year — he also won the Andalucian Open last March — after a nineyear drought. Now in the top 45, he could contend for a spot in the 2012 Ryder Cup. “I played lovely all week. But today I think tee to green, apart from my tee shot on 10th, I can’t play much better than that,” said Lawrie, who also won the tournament in 1999. “I actually felt I left three or four putts out there and got it around to 7 under

Lawrie downplayed his age, saying he is playing better now than he was in 1999 when he won the British Open. He added that his putting has improved significantly in the past few months, which allowed him to contend at the season-ending DP World Championship and again last week in Abu Dhabi.

“You get a little bit older and you kind of lose focus but I actually feel the opposite,” Lawrie said. “I feel I’m getting better. I feel my ball striking has improved immensely since I turned 40. So it’s great to win.”

Rio Ferdinand has thanked the Chelsea fans who taunted him for inspiring Manchester United’s comeback at Stamford Bridge.

The Red Devils were 3-0 down just five minutes into the second half of the Premier League match but came back to draw 3-3 thanks to two Wayne Rooney penalties and a header from Javier Hernandez.

And the United centre back, whose brother Anton is at the centre of the John Terry row after accusing the England man of racially abusing him, was booed throughout the match.

However, the defender later hit back via Twitter, commenting: “I got booed by the CFC fans today — well done guys. Thanks for inspiring me & the lads! “That’s like fuel to me! TeamSpirit.”

Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas was left incensed after Howard Webb awarded United a penalty after Daniel Sturridge brought down Patrice Evra in the box, while his sense of injustice was heightened further when Branislav Ivanovic’s tackle on Danny Welbeck ended in the same outcome.

However, Ferguson remains adamant that both challenges warranted a penalty being awarded, and said his side could have gone on to win the game if Cann had seen Jose Bosingwa’s pull on

“The two penalties in the second half were justified. I think we could have had four in the game,” he told Sky Sports.

“The linesman has given two penalties against us at Old Trafford in the last two years, one against Arsenal and one against Liverpool.

The crew of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel Fort Rosalie enjoyed diverse activities during their visit last week, including a football match against Her Majesty’s Prison Northward team.

A select prison side comprised of prisoners, an officer and members of the prison’s football team, known as the Transformers, won the game against Real Rosalie, which was held within the prison compound.

“The prisoners thoroughly

enjoyed the spirited and lively match,” said Prison Director Dwight Scott. “This was the first such football match involving a visiting ship in many years.”

He added that the prison’s indoor five-a-side football team has won the Cayman Islands Westel 5-a-side championship for the past two years. “It is well established that sports help to increase prisoners’ self-esteem,” said Mr. Scott. “Players are allowed

to participate based on factors including good behaviour and their commitment to sentenceplanning measures.”

RFA Fort Rosalie also hosted a school visit and assisted the government’s Recreation, Parks and Cemeteries Unit with painting and repairs at a children’s playground in George Town.
