The 20 UK detectives arriving in Cayman this week and next will not patrol troubled communities or process crime scenes, but will interview witnesses, handle evidence and help build RCIPS court cases. “They are not going into crime scenes, and they won’t do cordons or remove bodies, but rather will be involved in the investigations in the aftermath, making judgements, visiting neighhbours and interviewing witnesses. They will not be put in harm’s way,” said Commissioner of Police David Baines on Friday. “They are not scenes-of-crime officers, but will process and handle evidence and exhibits,” he said. Linton Tibbetts, 88, an icon of the Cayman Islands, symbol of its development and unofficial “mayor” of the Sister Islands, passed away on Thursday night in a St Petersburg hospital. Known “Mr T”, the entrepreneur and descendant of a large New England family, who arrived in Cayman in 1830, was most publicly known for his ownership of Cox Lumber, a failing Florida enterprise in 1949, which thrived and multiplied under his tireless leadership. He opened the Grand Cayman operation, then, as now, on Eastern Avenue, in 1989. Born on Cayman Brac in 1923, son of a shipbuilder, Mr Tibbetts is survived by his brother and longtime Brac resident Bernard, two US-based daughters, Mary and Donna; nine grandchildren, including Jeff Brandeis, Republican representative for St Petersburg in the Florida legislature; several great-grandchildren and a virtual legion of cousins, nieces and nephews, including Cayman Airways Paul Tibbetts and Cayman Brac Power and Light’s Jonathan Tibbetts. On Tuesday, 11 October, the family will hold a service for Mr Tibbetts in Tampa, Fla, followed on Saturday, 15 October by a mid-morning memorial at George Town’s Family Life Centre on Walker’s Road. “A good man has fallen,” Premier to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

McKeeva Bush told iNews on Friday. “I will not say we have lost a role model because he remains a shining example, but I will miss his advice. “He was a good friend and supporter, an entrepreneurial person and a gogetter, and that’s the kind of person I admire. He took his chances, but prudently,” he said. His partner for 31 years, Herbert Strickland, declined to comment immediately, preferring to wait while Mr Tibbetts family prepared press and memorial materials, saying only that “he definitely was an icon. Everyone knew him.” In November 2003, Queen Elizabeth awarded Mr Tibbetts an OBE for service to the islands and economy, affording him a chance to visit Buckingham Palace, an experience, he said, that “brought me tears of joy”. In 2006, he sold Cox Lumber’s St Petersburg operation to constructionsupply giant Home Depot, although he characterised it as a kind of partnership. He built Cayman Brac’s first hotel, the Brac Reef Resort, in the mid-’70s, then, to ensure occupancy, started Red Carpet Airlines with some friends and half-a-dozen aircraft, linking the island with St Petersburg. Some years later, when Cayman Airways was in crisis, he also operated flights to Grand Cayman. More recently, he built the Little Cayman Marine Museum. According to brother Bernard,

Red Carpet stopped operating in the early 80s. “He was very influential and a person with good foresight, not only in business, but for the islands as well. He just seemed to have a special talent with his intelligent thinking. He was extremely active and the whole family had a long history of public service,” he said. “I’m the youngest member of the family and the last survivor,” Bernard, 77, said. MLA for Cayman Brac Moses Kirkconnell remembered Mr Tibbetts on Friday, saying “The country is deeply saddened, as I am. He had a relationship with everybody, and their status didn’t matter. We have lost a patriarch for both Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. He was a man of great character and was not afraid to share his tremendous knowledge.” Married to Tibbett’s cousin (the late Brenda Tibbetts), Kim Lund, called him a “statesman for the Cayman Islands and one of the premier entrepreneurs who gave a lot back to Cayman in both investment and leadership. He was a giving person, always trying to help young people get started. He led the way for them whenever he could.”

Medical pot user turned in by pizza delivery man DENVER (AP) — A Colorado man who got a visit from police after a pizza delivery driver smelled marijuana at his home is getting free pizza from a rival restaurant. Frederick Smith says police searched his home in Aurora after a Papa John’s International Inc. driver smelled marijuana there last week. The driver reported a child was in the home at the time. Smith said that he’s a registered medical marijuana user. Papa John’s has said it stands by its employee. One of its Denver-based rivals, Sexy Pizza, said Thursday that it would give Smith one free pizza monthly until Colorado voters decide a proposed 2012 ballot initiative that would legalize marijuana for recreational use. Sexy Pizza says it’ll extend the offer for life if voters pass the initiative.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A protest of Utah’s uptight laws that featured people running through the streets of Salt Lake City in their underwear has set a new world record. Guinness World Records says the Utah Undie Run broke the previous record for largest gathering of people wearing only underpants or knickers by 1,720 people. Records officials say 2,270 people stripped to their underwear during the Utah Undie Run on Sept. 24. The previous record of 550 people was set last year in Great Britain. Utah Undie Run organizers are planning another run next August. The event’s goal is to protest the state’s conservative politics.

He would divide the visiting officers among various investigative teams, “enhancing their capabilities and skill sets, each of them working alongside others”, under RCIPS team leaders. “The officers are very professional,” Mr Murphy said, “and it’s a shorttime assignment. I am here because I wanted to know what I was sending my officers into and who bore the duty of responsibility for them. “The RCIPS,” he said, “is doing a very good job with limited resources. I have 7,000 officers under me in Merseyside, and I’d be stretched by five murders.” Mr Murphy said he had met members of the Legislative Assembly on Friday morning, and had been “pleasantly surprised. There is some very advanced thinking about building relationships with young people, and not just confrontation. “Enforcement is not the solution to the gang problem,” he said. “It is an indispensable part and ‘bad guys’ have to be taken off the street, but if you want to solve it, you need education, youth services and government departments to join in and share the problem. He observed that “anti-social behavour” legislation “was very useful” in the UK, making it possible to break up low-level groups and associations that could escalate into more serious criminality. “You need a good intelligence system and to engender trust in the community. That is invaluable, creating trust and building relationships with young people,” Mr Murphy said.

FirstCaribbean acquire CIBC shares FirstCaribbean International Bank Limited announced Oct. 3 that it has entered into an agreement to acquire all of the issued and outstanding shares in CIBC Bank and Trust Company (Cayman) Limited, a Cayman Islands Company and CIBC Trust Company (Bahamas) Limited. The agreement with its majority shareholder, CIBC Investments (Cayman) Limited, has a purchase price of $76.8 million, but it is subject to regulatory approvals. FirstCaribbean will issue 51,917,808 common shares in its capital as payment of the purchase price. CIBC Investments (Cayman) Limited will at the conclusion of the transaction own 1,445,725,257 or 91.67 percent (91.39 percent prior to the transaction) of the shares of FirstCaribbean. The two acquired companies provide trust and fund administration services business in the Caribbean to private wealth management clients and institutional investors. “These businesses are a wonderful addition to the FirstCaribbean group,” said FirstCaribbean CEO Rik Parkhill. CEO of the two companies, Ben Gillooly, said “It is great to become part of the FirstCaribbean family. Heartless thieves put lives at risk

Heartless thieves stole life-saving supplements during a raid at a charity. The nutrients were taken in a break-in at the Meals on Wheels centre in George Town. It put an elderly woman’s life in danger and staff at the centre faced a race against time to replace the vital items. In the end staff paid for the supplements out of their own pockets to ensure the elderly woman’s health. The break-in happened on Wednesday and has left staff at the centre on McField Lane shell-shocked. Director Mrs. Beulah McField, said: ““This is definitively beyond the scope of anything that I could ever imagine. Of course I feel violated after this incident. I don’t have the same sense of security.” Mrs. Mcfield says she is especially saddened by the deprivation of nutrients for a helpless senior citizen, whose special food source [Ensure] was also stolen. She added: “We also provide food for people who cannot eat certain meats. “There are senior citizens who, because of their age, have to be kept on special diets. “We had a special food supplement to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

called “Ensure” for an old lady that cannot consume any other kind of food and they took that away. “We have been in this little corner now for 16 years, with no surveillance, no light, and no security and it wasn’t this bad. “We have been robbed before, but at that time the robbers only took what they needed to eat.” Mrs. McField added that the type of goods taken from the location did not suggest that there is an element of maliciousness involved in the heist. “They took the kid’s juices, carrots and frozen vegetables, toilet tissues, paper towels and serving trays and soup cups, and they vandalised the

place; “that’s not just due to hunger; that is malicious,” she said. Meals on wheels, a charitable organisation that provides much needed food for the poor, elderly people, and less fortunate children, was raided, looted and vandalised on Wednesday. Staff say they now need to raise funds to help improve the security of the centre and avoid another break-in. Mrs McField added: “We have to dig deep now into our pockets to provide security for the premises and we also have to replace everything that they took away. “The community came together and gave us some support and have donated cash and kind.”

Schwarzenegger inaugurates his museum THAL, Austria (AP) — Arnold Schwarzenegger — the bodybuilder, movie star and ex-governor whose romantic exploits have landed him in the middle of a messy divorce — invoked his life as model for young people Friday during the formal inauguration of a museum dedicated to him in his native Austria. Hundreds of fans braved driving rain and chilly autumn temperatures to fete Austria’s most famous living son at the museum, located in the two-story Thal village house where Schwarzenegger was born. The museum, open since July, is

a repository of items that include his first barbell, the metal bed that he slept on as a youth, several life-size “Terminator” models and the polished dark wooden desk he sat behind while California’s governor. Schwarzenegger also unveiled a bronze statue of himself flexing and in trunks as the young body builder from Austria whose rippling biceps led to his Hollywood career — and the popularity that paved the road to the governor’s office. Aussie band loses appeal on ‘Down Under’ ruling SYDNEY (AP) — Australian rockers Men at Work on Friday lost their final court bid to prove they did not steal the distinctive flute riff of their 1980s hit “Down Under” from a children’s campfire song. The High Court of Australia denied the band’s bid to appeal a federal court judge’s earlier ruling that the group had copied the signature flute melody of “Down Under” from the song “Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree.” “Kookaburra,” a song about Australia’s famous bird of the same name, was written more than 70 years ago by Australian teacher

The wildly popular “Down Under” remains an unofficial anthem for Australia. Sinclair died in 1988, but publishing company Larrikin Music — which now holds the copyright for “Kookaburra” — filed a copyright lawsuit in 2009. Last year, Federal Court Justice Peter Jacobson ruled that the “Down Under” flute riff replicated a substantial part of Sinclair’s song. The judge later ordered Men

Syrian troops open fire as thousands rally, eight dead BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian security forces opened fire at protesters in several parts of the country on Friday, killing at least eight people and wounding scores, while a leading opposition figure was beaten up by pro-government gunmen and rushed to a hospital in Damascus, activist said. The developments came as tens of thousands marched in the streets of several Syrian cities, towns and villages, calling for the downfall of President Bashar Assad’s regime. The Editor speaks When is being a Caymanian not a Caymanian?

I have Cayman Status along with a few thousand others here in the Cayman Islands. When I leave and return these islands I receive a ticket placed in my passport with the abbreviation “C/S” scrawled on it. I have a very nice letter signed by the Chairman of the Cayman Islands Protection and Immigration Board congratulating me on becoming a ‘Caymanian’ and a very attractive certificate stating I am a ‘Caymanian’. However, I am NOT a Caymanian. I have Caymanian STATUS. The general definition of ‘status’ means a) the position of an individual in relation to another or others; social or professional standing; b) high position or standing; prestige; or, c) the standing of a person before the law. I was very proud to become a ‘Caymanian’. I believed, like the thousand or so other Caymanian status holders, that I was ‘Caymanian’. However, I am not. I believed when someone becomes ‘American’ by status they are ‘Americans’. I was right – they are ‘Americans.’ I colin.wilson@ieyenews.com

Holness ready for PM position

Jamaican Education Minister Andrew Holness – favourite to take over as PM – has addressed hundreds of jubilant party supporters. Although the meeting was planned as a delegates-only assembly for those in north east St Ann, was transformed into a massive political rally at the Ocho Rios High school where Holness also received more public support. He said he was appreciative of the overwhelming support and pledged his heart, mind and hands to the Jamaican people. “Labourites, I am grateful that the delegates of St Ann turned out in their numbers. I am new to this position and you will take some time to get to know me, but you will get to know who your new leader is,” he said. Holness declared that he was capable of leading the party and the country, even as he told supporters that he has a vision for the country. Superior’s seven learn all about autos

Six young men and one young woman have begun a fully-certified, one-year course in car mechanics at Superior Auto, a full service garage in George Town. Last year, six students began the programme, but three dropped out, leaving three to gain the internationally recognised NVQJ certificate from the Jamaica German Automotive School (JAGAS). All three have since found

employment. One has been taken on by Superior Auto, one by Prestige Motors, and one by Car City. Theory makes up about half the course, Superior Auto has a dedicated training room where this year’s class were learning math, science, english and technical drawing The rest is hands-on experience. “They learn how to repair a car’s suspension, brakes, transmission. Really, everything on a car,” said Mark DeMercardo, who co-owns Superior Auto with Denise DeMercado.

“Training is done by Mr. Owen Knight, a trained mechanic from the Jamaican Automotive School, along with Lead Instructor Mark DeMercado. We also have volunteers who come and help,” Ms. DeMercado said. Trainee Sean Levy, 19, has been fixing cars and engines ever since he was 12. “My mother told me about this course. She said it would be good for me. I have done repairs but never been paid before,” Sean said. Jessica Dixon, 22, the only woman

on the course said: “I’ve loved anything to do with cars all my life. I used to work at Cayman Airways as a reservations agent, but as soon as I heard about this programme at Superior Auto I decided to do it. “It’s a free programme, which is great because it is basically the same programme being offered in the States, but you have to pay $6000 for that, and the Government won’t give you a scholarship to go there.” So far, most of the finance for the programme has come from

Superior Auto. “We are paying for virtually everything except for the trips to Jamaica, which are a necessary part of the course. They have so far been covered by Rotary Sunrise and Rotary Central, Price Waterhouse and Cayman Airways,” Ms DeMercado said. “Last year the Department of Education gave us CI$10,000, and this year, HSBC has helped us with a donation of just under CI$5,000,” she added. The DeMercados are hoping to

get some more financial support this year, and were encouraged by the Premier’s recent visit to meet the young people on the programme, and his declaration of support for it. But no matter what, Mark and Denise DeMercado are determined to continue offering the course, because they feel it is important: “Our mission is to assist the young people who cannot afford to study overseas. We decided to teach those young people a trade.” Ms DeMercado said.

The Cancer Society has played an integral role in the kick-off and opening of our children’s Summer Camp. Their Project Coordinator, Vicki Anderson, attended our first week of Summer Camp and spoke to our campers about the importance of sun safety and using sunscreen, hats, and long clothing to prevent sun damage and skin cancer. The presentation was engaging, informative, and tailored to our young audience. It was the perfect way to set the standard for summer sun safety for our children and the entire Summer Camp. We are looking forward to the Cancer Society’s return for our next summer season!

Canadians are giving thanks Canadians living in the Cayman Islands are preparing themselves for their celebration of Thanksgiving, or as in Canadian French “Jour de l’Action de grâce”. Out of the 46,000 people living in the Cayman Islands, there are nearly 2,000 Canadians residing or working here. The day of Thanksgiving is declared a national holiday in many places throughout Canada, with the Atlantic provinces of Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia being the exceptions. The holiday, celebrated on the second Monday of October each year, is used to commemorate the country’s achievements, and is also

used as an expression of gratitude and celebration of the good fortunes of the previous year. The Canadian Parliament, in its proclamation of the holiday in 1957, defined Thanksgiving as “A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed.” As a liturgical festival, traditionally Thanksgiving corresponds to the

English and continental-European Harvest festival, with churches decorated with cornucopias, pumpkins, corn, wheat sheaves, and other harvest bounty. English and European harvest hymns are sung on the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend, and scriptural selections drawn from biblical stories relating to the Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot.

Ontario Liberals one seat shy of majority ONTARIO (AP) - Ontario Liberals scored a third straight victory in a provincial election in Canada’s economic center on Thursday, but fell one seat short of a majority and will need support from opposition legislators to stay in power. Dalton McGuinty strode to the podium through a sea of supporters, as the returning premier of Ontario but a humbled leader of Canada’s most populous province. The Liberal leader’s pursuit for another majority mandate fell short by only one seat, leaving him at the helm of Ontario’s first minority government in 26 years. The Liberals had 53 seats, while the Progressive Conservatives had 37 and the NDP had 17, the most seats that party has held in 16 years. Had Mr. McGuinty won a third consecutive majority, he would have been the first premier in 50 years to perform the feat in Ontario. McGuinty was easily re-elected in his Ottawa South riding and the other major party leaders also claimed their seats. Even with the win, it’s a long fall for the Liberals after losing 17

seats Thursday. When the writ was dropped, the Liberals held 70 seats, the Conservatives 25 and the NDP 10 while two seats were vacant. The win was widely expected to be a narrow one. Political analysts predicted the election would come down to the wire and the Liberals and Progressive Conservatives were neckand-neck in a race that was seen, at first, to be a sure win for the PCs. The last time Ontario had a minority government was in 1985 when the Liberals ended the Progressive Conservatives 42-year rule with the help of Bob Rae’s NDP. Conservative leader Tim Hudak’s front-runner campaign proved to be strong competition for the incumbent McGuinty, who appeared sluggish on the month-long trail, but rebounded near the end. But Mr. Hudak saw his lead disappear in the final weeks of the campaign as he scrambled to connect with voters on a platform that looked very similar to that of the Liberals, albeit with some promises to lower taxes and curb spending. During the campaign, the Liberals promised more money for their

priorities of healthcare and education. They say they can rein in a C$16 billion ($15.4 billion) deficit and ween the province off its dependency on the auto sector by investing heavily in renewable energy. A vow to scrap Ontario’s C$7 billion green energy deal with South Korea’s Samsung and end above-market prices for renewable power were the party’s only big policy difference with the Liberals. Negative media play about rightwing crime and punishment ideas and moves deemed anti-immigrant and homophobic also did the Conservatives few favours.

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. 2. Sweat the sliced onion and garlic in approximately 2 tablespoons olive oil; add the tomatoes, and mash with a potato masher; cook over medium heat for at least half an hour. 3. In a large bowl, pour about 2 to 3 tablespoons of olive oil. Add salt, pepper, oregano and basil.

4. To the olive oil mixture, add the chopped aubergine, courgettes and bell peppers; toss until vegetables are lightly covered in the oil. 5. Place in a baking tin; roast for half an hour. 6. Put all the ingredients, including 1/2 the parsley, in a serving bowl, and mix together. Top with the remainder of the parsley.

Lindsay Japal has begun her year representing Cayman on a global scale. And next week she heads to the UK to take part in the prestigious Miss World competition. Before she flies out to England for the Miss World Pageant she gave iNews an inside view to her experience so far. Ms. Japal says she decided to take on the challenge of the Miss Cayman pageant because of the encouragement from friends, family members and even committee members. “It was a combination of things. I had encouragement from family members, friends and even committee members but it’s something you have to decide on for yourself, and I decided this was a great opportunity.” Her support, she says, was the greatest encouragement from the beginning. “I guess they all saw that I had the potential to do it which is something. It’s not that I didn’t think I could, but sometimes you need that extra push.” Lindsay also said that there was never a time that she wanted to give up. “After deciding I was going to do it because I have that kind of tenacity in me, when things got tough I only pushed harder.” Lindsay will depart Grand Cayman on 18th October for the Miss World competition and says she has been preparing by having talks with former Miss Cayman, Cristin, and reviewing what she learnt for Miss Cayman. “Preparations with all the girls will begin when I get to England but for now I’m just trying to work on being able to do everything on my own, ensuring I have everything I need in wardrobe and talking with Cristin for tips and advice and just reiterating everything I learnt from Miss Cayman”. Even if Ms. Japal didn’t take home the crown on that eventful night, she still hoped that her journey through the pageant would give her a great opportunity to grow as a person. Pageantry is an outlet that Lindsay says she would implore any young woman in our society to take on because it helps. “I had my reservations but it helps you not only to be confident in yourself but to be passionate about your island, to be proud to be a representative of your

country, and your people. “It helps you to put yourself out there, not only as an individual, but as a strong Caymanian woman and that is a great lesson to be learnt by any woman in this community.” Ms. Japal says that since she has taken the title of Miss Cayman, she still feels shocked. “It still hasn’t sunk in all the way for me, even when I’m out and people see me and say “Oh, that’s Miss Cayman” I still giggle and laugh to myself. “I don’t know when its going to be a reality for me but I’m enjoying it every step of the way.”

Guadalajara 2011 Pan American Games The Cayman Islands Olympic Committee (CIOC) is excited to be sending a team of twelve athletes to Guadalajara this month for the XVI Pan American Games. The games will be held from October 14th to the 30th. The Pan American Games are the second largest multi-sport event after the Summer Olympic Games. The competition is held between athletes from nations of the Americas, held every four years in the year before the Summer Olympic Games. Cayman will be represented in the following four sports:

The Team Manager for Athletics is Michael Nalty and Athletics Coach is Kenrick Williams. Bethany Cook will be travelling as the swimming Team Manager and Physiotherapist along with Coach Dominic Ross. The Team Manager for Equestrian is Mary McTaggart, the Groom is Cristhopher De Lara and Jessica’s horse “Ray of Light” will compete with her in her event. Shooting will be sending Team Manager Kevin Schirn and the General Team Physiotherapist is Al Bartice. The CIOC President Donald McLean and

Secretary General Carson Ebanks will also be in attendance, along with family and friends of those participating. The Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) and the Cayman Islands Olympic Fundraising Committee (CIOFC) aided the CIOC in funding the participation in these games, assisting in the cost of accommodation, airfare, outfitting the team and Games pins. The pins for the XVI Pan American Games were designed by local artist Jamie Doak and have been given to the delegation to distribute while in Guadalajara. The CIOC has held on to a few extra, please contact the CIOC if you are interested in purchasing any for yourself. Now it’s on to Texas, and the AL championship series starting Saturday night. “It’s a tremendous feeling,” Doug Fister said after getting the 3-2 win Thursday. “You got to take this thing one step at a time and try to just soak it all in as we go.” Fister, not even with the Tigers until July 30, gutted through five mostly tricky innings to form an unlikely trio of stars. Don Kelly, who didn’t make his big league debut until age 27 after six seasons in the minors, sent Ivan Nova’s sixth pitch of the night into the right-field seats. Delmon Young, acquired by Detroit in mid-August, deposited Nova’s seventh pitch into the leftfield stands. From there, the Tigers hung on and worried until Jose Valverde powered the final pitch past Alex Rodriguez, crouched and then exhaled. As did the Tigers, and their fans everywhere. “It was a gutsy win, especially with all the opportunities they had,” Kelly said. The victory sent the Tigers to the ALCS for the first time since 2006, the year they also eliminated the Yankees in the first round. It was a thriller, with the outcome seeming to teeter on every pitch thrown by the Tigers.

Fidelity season finishes with a flurry

There was nothing anticlimactic about the finale of the 2011 Fidelity Fun Run series as several division titles and other podium positions were only determined in the final stages of the two mile struggle. From the start, capably administered by Olympic sprinter Cydonie Mothersill Stephens, until the final homestretch, there was great speculation as to whether anyone could upset Marius Acker, and also who would win the overall ladies title in the expected duel between Lauretta Bennett and Tracey Walker. As it happened, no one could top Marius, and the overall men’s awards went to the same trio who finished in one-two-three order over each of the three weeks, with Marius at the fore, followed by Conrad Proud, with Carl Grant next in line. On this occasion, times posted were 10:41,11:06,and 11:09. Greg Meaker, on the scene for the first time in quite a while, placed fourth in 11:20,while Chadwick Webster was a step behind at 11:21, as he finished fifth for the second week in a row. Among the ladies, Beth Schreader was triumphant as she duplicated her week one victory in 12:29, but a mid-event non-appearance left her shy of points for the overall title. Lauretta Bennett carried off the number one award with a 12:52 performance, as Tracey Walker gained runner-up honours (13:06). Emma Byrnes placed third overall, timed in 13:21 on this day. There were 176 runner/walker finishers, with an additional group of pram passengers, and attendees on leash. Prior outings attracted 141 and 181 entries. Weather on each occasion was sunny, and the favourable conditions contributed to the large turnout. Representatives of the FIDELITY group, who provided the sponsorship, expressed their satisfaction with the activity and organisers, the Phoenix Athletic Club, thanked the sponsors and all volunteers for their assistance.
