Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Waste Management Purpose To ensure that all staff understand the importance of waste management and the role of waste in minimising the transmission of infection. To ensure staff are aware of the systems in place to safely manage waste in order to maintain service user, staff and visitor safety and to ensure compliance with all relevant waste legislation and guidance. Target Group All care staff including bank, agency and other visiting staff.

All staff should receive training in waste management relevant to their role and should inform the manager if unable to undertake same, whether due to physical problems or environmental factors within the facility.

Effective waste management plays an important role in providing a safe environment for service users, staff and visitors.. The management of waste is an essential part of ensuring that care activities do not pose a risk or potential risk of infection and are securely managed. Arrangements for managing waste need to be part of an employer’s overall health and safety management systems. Effective management of waste involves planning/action incorporating:

The definition of waste is provided by the Controlled Waste Regulations (issued under the Environmental Protection Act) and in Northern Ireland by the Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order. Management of waste must conform to the appropriate national guidelines and should be in accordance with Health Technical Memorandum (HTM 07-01) ‘Safe Management of Health Care Waste’.

Choosing an appropriate waste container: The type of container to be used for the storage/disposal of waste will depend on the category and nature of the waste to be contained.
