Position the service user to ensure area to be dressed is easily accessible while maintaining dignity. If necessary loosen edges of old dressing but do not expose wound

Clean hands with alcohol rub or soap and water To reduce the risk of infection Open dressing pack and slide the inner sterile content onto the top shelf of trolley making sure it falls right way up

Touching only corners open the pack to 
 create a sterile field
Using forceps carefully open any extra sterile equipment (i.e. extra gauze, sterile dressing) onto the centre of the sterile field
To ensure pack can be opened safely
To prevent contamination
To ensure all extra sterile equipment is accessible if working alone.
Clean hands with alcohol rub or soap and water. To reduce the risk of infection to the wound Put on sterile gloves and contamination of the hands of the carer
