Remove any un-necessary furniture or care equipment from room and keep personal property to a minimum

To facilitate cleaning and reduce the number of items in the room that may become contaminated

If possible allocate equipment to service user and keep in room To prevent transmission of microorganisms via equipment

Use disposable equipment where available e.g. manual handling slings, B/P cuffs

Ensure that mattress and pillows have intact protective covers

Re-usable equipment should be thoroughly decontaminated using chlorine releasing agent before removal from room and use on other service users

Care Equipment

Equipment – Outside Room • Source isolation notice • Disposable gloves • Disposable aprons • Alcohol hand-rub (if required)

Equipment – Inside Room following risk assessment and if required • Non-sterile disposable gloves • Liquid soap, paper towels • Alcohol hand rub • Orange/yellow waste bag in a foot pedal operated bin • Sharps disposal box • Red alginate laundry bag • Dedicated cleaning equipment (keep in ensuite bathroom)

To protect permeable covers and facilitate decontamination

To have PPE and other equipment available as required

Individual risk assessment should be carried out to ensure it is safe to leave items such as sharps box, plastic bags and alcohol hand-rub in the room

Procedure before Entering the Isolation Room Actions

Rationale

Gather all equipment needed if these are not To avoid unnecessary entry and exit of the already in room isolation area

Ensure bare below the elbows
