Time for Cottage Opening!

If you have owned a "unwinterized" cottage for years, then you are probably familiar with the ritual known as "opening the cottage." However, if you are new to cottage ownership, or just thinking about it, this might help you understand what is involved in the procedure.

Late in the spring, usually the last weekend of May Canadian cottage owners make the trek out of the city to see what winter has brought.

Lucky is the cottager who finds that his cabin has not sheltered a visitor or two over the winter months, be they four-legged or two-legged. The good news is that unless there is a significant problem, opening the cottage is a whole lot less work than closing it.

initial inspection for damage, to turning the water and power back on, through dusting, cleaning, and unwrapping furnishings, and calling the appropriate repair people in.

Your initial inspection begins with the outside of the structure: look for problems with the power lines fraying , tree limbs, or down wires.

Are there any damaged windows, doors, or walls? Are there missing shingles or fixtures? Check along the foundation and the chimney to spot cracks or other winter damage.

This is also a good time to make a note of what could use a good cleaning, or a fresh coat of paint.

Examine the deck or verandah for any rotten wood or lifted nails. Are any stairs loose? Head down to the waterfront, scan the dock to see if any of the same issues have arisen loose planks, raised nails, corroded connectors, supports, or lifts, and other damage that might be the result of twisting.

Once inside, make a quick inspection for structural or water damage on ceilings and walls. If you turned the water off in the fall to prevent pipes from bursting then you will likely avoid the unpleasant surprise of water leaks. Before you turn the water back on, check the pipes for loose connections which will lead to leaks when you do.

After the water is turned on, you will need to open line to the hot water tank, and turn it on if necessary.

Turn on one of the hot water faucets that is located higher than the tank (second storey, possibly). Open the pipe that leads to the hot water tank.

Follow the pipes to make sure there are no leaks.

The happiest place on earth for many, is our cottages... After leaving the car behind, the boat ride over to our remote property feels like a journey to somewhere far away. Enjoy the new season coming up and have a happy cottage opening!

Fifty-Five and Up! “Just For Fun” TAKING THE FINAL EXAM

Two college basketball players were taking an important final exam. If they failed, they would be on academic probation and not allowed to play in the big game the following week. The exam was fill-in-the-blank. (The last question read, "Old MacDonald had a ________.")

Slinky was stumped. He had no idea what to answer. But he knew he needed to get this one right to be sure he passed. Making sure the professor wasn't watching, he tapped Tiny on the shoulder.

"Pssst. Tiny. What's the answer to the last question?" Tiny laughed. He looked around to make sure the professor hadn't noticed then he turned to Slinky. "Slinky, you're so stupid. Everyone knows Old MacDonald had a FARM." "Oh yeah," said Slinky. "I remember now." He picked up his No. 2 pencil and started to write the answer in the blank. He stopped. Tapping Tiny's shoulder again, he whispered, "Tiny, how do you spell farm?"

"You are really dumb, Slinky. That's so easy.

She had the idea, the name and the logo for the store all thought out for a good two years before finding the right town to launch it. Lindsay and her husband spent many weekends searching for the perfect spot to settle down together and Alexandria won. They found a home nearby last June and they loved the atmosphere and community spirit displayed by its people. They even got married in Island Park. For the last 10 years Lindsay worked as a receiving manager but is now

The future will certainly include a Touch of Home for years to come. Lindsay has started to get a good sense of what will people are looking for but certainly knows what to do to put that smile on your face when you shop her store. The Golden Rule is her guide, as it should be.

It’s Tow Time! Six Top Trailer Towing Safety Tips For Hookin’ Up

1. The most important thing you need to know is the towing capacity of your car, truck or SUV. Pulling too much weight is extremely dangerous. Your vehicle has certain tow ratings that must match the hitch system you choose. If you don’t know the towing capacity of your vehicle, just check the owner’s manual. The goal is not to exceed the vehicles towing capacity. This includes the trailer and its contents. So, if you’re unsure about the trailer weight, just pull into a public scale and find out.

2. Make sure the hitch ball is secure in the mount before towing. The lock nut & washer need to be torqued to the manufacturer’s specs depending on the shank size of the ball. A standard ratchet or crescent wrench won’t supply the sufficient torque needed, so make sure you have a torque wrench to tighten it up correctly! While you’re at it, make sure the pin and clip securing the ball mount are intact.

3. When trailer hitches and their connections are not properly secured, they can cause serious accidents. That’s why safety chains are extremely important in the event your trailer becomes disengaged from your tow vehicle. These

metal chain links vary in length and width, so make sure you chose the right size chain for the weight of your trailer.

Just criss-cross the chains under the trailer tongue and attach to your tow vehicle. Make sure they don’t drag and give’em a little tug……..it’s that simple. Safety chains are required everywhere.

4. Improper braking is another hazard to avoid. The more weight you pull, the harder it is to stop. When purchasing a trailer or camper, opt for one that has brakes. And if you do, most likely you will need a braking system in your tow vehicle. Most places require trailer brakes when the fully loaded weight exceeds a certain limit.

5. Lighting is critical for trailers because the rear facing lights of the vehicle are typically obstructed by the trailer.

Laws require trailers have specific lights, which means tapping into the tow vehicles electrical system. Be sure wires or plugs don’t scrape the ground. Connections will get dirty, so keep’em clean.

6. The proper loading of your trailer is essential to safe towing, as unbalanced loads can cause serious trailer sway.

Balance it up by loading from side to side and along the length of the trailer. Place the heavier goods in the front and over the axles since this is the strongest area. Always use ratchet straps or tie downs to keep your cargo from sliding or falling out. Remember, gravity is not an acceptable method of securing a load!
