or generations of Cape Cod Baseball League players, fans and volunteers, Arnold Mycock’s name would be synonymous with the league in general, and the Cotuit Kettleers in particular. “There are not many days that go by where anyone in the league is not sharing an Arnold Mycock story,” said Cotuit Kettleers president Paul Logan. Mycock, an original Cape League Hall of Fame member, died in his home at age 92 after a brief illness this past April. He was a driving force in 1963, helping to combine two separate baseball leagues on Cape Cod into a single league. What resulted was a single Cape Cod Baseball League that gained non-profit status and NCAA sanctioning. Thereafter, Mycock served in numerous league roles, including vice president, treasurer, league statistician and scheduler. “Arnold was truly ‘Mr. Cape League,’” said former league President Judy Walden Scarafile. “There was no one who knew more people, information or contacts in baseball, and in addition to all of this, he was the ultimate gentleman. How blessed we were to know and work with this prince of a man.” In 1975, Mycock also played a key role in the development of CCBL youth baseball clinics, which are now vastly popular with each team. In 1988 he was the first to be given the Cape League Franchise Person of the Year award, and in 2000, one of the first to be inducted into the Cape League Hall of Fame. He was awarded the U.S. Postal Service Plaque for Contributions to Amateur Baseball in 1992. The following year he was given the
Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Award. In 2012, the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) presented him with its Meritorious Service Award, and the Kettleers dedicated their press box in his name. Mycock grew up in Somerset, Mass., where he was a star athlete at Somerset High School, graduating in 1942. He was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 1993. Mycock served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and later attended Brown University in Providence, R.I., before moving in 1950 to Cotuit. Mycock joined the Kettleers organization in 1950 as a volunteer offering to do “whatever needed to be done,” a trait that he carried for over 67 years. He quickly became the general manager that first year and remained in that capacity until 1994. He was a title examiner who quickly immersed himself in the Kettleers organization, whether it was fundraising, bookkeeping, assessing a ballplayer’s talent, building a new fence, recording hitting and fielding statistics, or cutting the grass at Lowell Park. Arnold did it all. As general manager, he guided the Kettleers to more than 770 wins and 12 Cape League Championships. During that span, 40 Cotuit players went on to play in the Major Leagues. For his contributions to the league and to his beloved Kettleers, Arnold will forever remain a giant part of the Cape Cod Baseball League. PHOTO COURTESY OF KETTLEERS.ORG

CHATHAM ALUMNUS KRIS BRYANT FINDS SUCCESS IN MLB AFTER STRUGGLING IN CCBL By JOHN GARNER JR. Director of Public Relations & Broadcasting
O
ne of the most highly-touted Cape League prospects in recent memory was Chatham’s Kris Bryant, a No. 2 pick in Major League Baseball’s Draft in 2013 who signed a $6.7 million bonus with the Chicago Cubs and was named 2015 National League Rookie of the Year. As a freshman at San Diego in 2011, Bryant batted.365 with a .482 OBP, .599 SLG and nine home runs. He was named a freshman All-American and West Coast Conference CoFreshman and Player of the Year. But like many young hitters switching from aluminum to wood and facing pitching aces on the Cape, Bryant struggled mightily during the summer of 2011 playing for the Anglers, hitting .223 (29-130) with three homers and 16 RBI. Chatham Anglers vice-president and director Bob Sherman held the role of general manager at the time Bryant played on Cape. He said he

saw an article in Baseball America after Bryant won the National League Rookie of the Year in 2015 where Bryant said, “Yeah I struggled in the Cape (Cod) League.” “He was not the first or last player to struggle in the Cape League and move onto a great Major League career. It comes down to a player’s ability to make the physical and mental adjustments as they move forward in their career,” said Sherman. “Kris was respectful, polite and friendly. He was very kind to the younger fans and batboys. He was very humble for a young man who had won all of those accolades. I never saw him complain but you could read the frustration on his face when he had an unsuccessful at-bat. You could see the tools, but they just did not quite come together that summer,” said Sherman. As a sophomore in 2012, he was named First Team All-American by Baseball America. That summer, Bryant was selected to play for Team USA and tour across the country. Putting the frosting on the cake, the 21-yearold Bryant led all college players during his junior season in 2013 with 31 home runs, after playing for Team USA during summer of 2012. Bryant won the Dick Howser Trophy and Golden Spikes Award as the best amateur baseball player in 2013. He was also named a Louisville Slugger First Team All-American and College Baseball News National Player of the Year. Prior to the 2015 season, he was ranked as number one prospect by Baseball America. The slugging third baseman’s bonus was highest for any player in that year’s draft, surpassing $6.35 million that No. 1 pick Mark Appel (Y-D, 2011) received from Houston. In addition to Appel and Bryant, other CCBL alumni included No. 6 pick Colin Moran (Bourne, 2011-12) and No. 32 pick Aaron Judge (Brewster, 2012).

Bryant began his pro career with the Boise Hawks of the Class A-Short Season Northwest League, batting .354 with four home runs. He was promoted to the Daytona Cubs of the Florida State League, hit .333 with five home runs and helped them win the championship. After the season, he played in Arizona Fall League and was named MVP of the AFL after hitting .364/.457/.727 with six home runs in 20 games. Bryant started 2014 with Double-A Tennessee and in June won the 2013 Southern League Home Run Derby and participated in the All-Star game. On June 18, 2014, Bryant was promoted to the Triple-A Iowa Cubs after batting .355 with 22 home runs and 58 RBI in 68 games with Tennessee. In a midseason top prospect update in 2014, Bryant ranked as the best prospect in baseball. Bryant was named USA Today Minor League Player of the Year, Baseball America Minor League Player of the Year and won the Joe Bauman Home Run Award. Baseball America named him the # 1 prospect in 2015. Bryant was invited to spring training by the Cubs in 2015 and in 40 at-bats, hit HR, which
led all major leaguers. He hit .425 with a .477 OBP and 1.175 slugging pct. But the Cubs sent Bryant down to Triple-A and people assumed service time rules played a factor. If Bryant played 12 days in minors, the Cubs would receive another year of control. In seven games with Iowa, Bryant hit three HR and batted .321. On April 17, 2015, Bryant was called up to the majors by the Cubs and made his debut against San Diego, going 0–4 with three strikeouts. The following day, Kris blooped an RBI hit, drew three walks and stole a base. Despite no homers in April, Bryant batted .318, a .455 OBP and earned 10 walks and RBIs. Bryant hit his first ML homer May 9, 2015, a three-run shot, off Milwaukee’s Kyle Lohse and second HR came at Wrigley Field. He finished May with .265 batting average, seven home runs, 22 RBI’s, and 16 walks and was awarded NL Rookie of the Month. Bryant’s first grand slam came in a 17–0 win against Cleveland. In a July 4 game against the Marlins, Bryant hit a two-run homer and his second grand slam off Jarred Cosart. He was second Cubs’ rookie to hit two grand slams since Billy Williams in 1961. Kris was selected as injury replacement on NL roster in the All-Star Game and participated in HR Derby. Bryant also hit a two-run homer in a 9–8 win over the Rockies. On Sept. 6, Bryant hit a 495-foot home run, longest of the MLB season, tying Williams (1961) and Geovany Soto (2008), for Cubs’ single-season RBI record for rookies with 86. Bryant passed Williams for most HR by Cubs rookie and batted .275 with 26 HR, 31 doubles, and 99 RBI. Bryant struck out 199 times which led the NL and set a rookie record. The Cubs finished 97-65, clinched a Wild Card and shut out the Pirates, 4–0 advancing to the NLDS, where Bryant hit a two-run HR against the Cardinals in an 8–6 win. Bryant was named the Sporting News and Baseball America Rookie of the Year, making him first to win college, minor league, and rookie of the year awards in consecutive seasons. Ed. T
he 74-year-old Joe Sherman, who served as the Cape Cod Baseball League’s senior writer, editor, league historian and director of special projects, passed away this off-season after a long illness. Sherman, a Falmouth, Mass., native, spent several years living in West Yarmouth with son Stephen, daughter Janice Sherman O’Brien, and his pre-deceased wife, Alice. Sherman also served as the Cape League’s statistician and publicist in the early 1960s, while also overseeing coverage of the league as sports editor of the Cape Cod StandardTimes. He was a member of the CCBL committee whose efforts in 1963 brought about the “modern era” of the league, which combined the Upper and Lower Cape Leagues into one entity. That led to sanctioning of the league by the NCAA, where all competing players would have remaining college eligibility. Sherman was a former sports editor of the Cape Cod Standard-Times in the 1960s, worked in television and radio in Worcester and on Cape Cod, and spent two stints on the editorial staff at the Boston Herald. He retired 10 years ago as special projects editor after 29 years with Brockton’s daily newspaper, The Enterprise.

Joe is pictured here with NASA astronaut Catherine Coleman at the Cape League All-Star game at Fenway in 2011.
He rejoined the Cape League in 2006 and continued to contribute stories to the website and to the league’s thrice-yearly publication, Cape League Magazine, and was a member of the league’s Hall of Fame Committee advisory board. “Joe Sherman was the only man that could put a baseball into space,” said CCBL President Chuck Sturtevant. “His knowledge of ‘who’s who’ in baseball was next to none.” Sherman conceived and oversaw the 2011 “Spaceball” project, which resulted in a Cape League baseball being carried to and from the International Space Station on the Space Shuttle Endeavour. “A little … those are the operative words. Joe never did anything just a little,” said retired CCBL President Judy Walden Scarafile. “He began writing for the website and eventually was cranking out three to four stories a week. He was a talented and prolific writer, but also a great editor. And when it came to a unique idea, nobody could match Joe’s mind. Joe could do it all. There is now a major void in the Cape League family. We’ll all miss Joe tremendously.” CAPECODBASEBALL.ORG | 7
Rare occurrence: two seasons, two new managers By ELIZABETH COHEN

E
ach season the Cape League dugouts are full of new faces from numerous parts of the country. On the other hand, it is rare to see a new field manager at the helm. After this upcoming season, it won’t be so uncommon. The Brewster Whitecaps introduced Jamie Shevchik as their field manager in 2015. Just one year later it’s the Wareham Gatemen’s turn, with Jerry Weinstein leading the charge as field manager for 2016. Weinstein is replacing Cooper Farris, who had been at the helm since 2001, collecting three Cape League titles (2001, 2002, 2012) along the way. Shevchik returns for his second year after guiding Brewster to a regular-season record of 24-19-1 and the East’s second seed in the 2015 Cape League playoffs. The social-media savvy coach even gained a few Twitter followers with his handle @Jshev21 once he became coach. Weinstein also enjoys social media, where his Twitter handle is @JWonCATCHING. This is the first Cape League managerial position of Weinstein’s extensive coaching career. He joins the Gatemen after spending the previous nine seasons with the Colorado Rockies, last year as the Rockies’ developmental supervisor. “Jerry has a wealth of knowledge and experience at not only the professional level but also in collegiate baseball,” Wareham President Tom Gay said. “What most impresses us is Jerry’s commitment to player development, which is the foundation of the Gatemen organization.”
Brewster Whitecaps’ Manager Jamie Shevchik pictured (L)
Shevchik is an experienced former manager for seven seasons with the New England Collegiate Baseball League’s Danbury Westerners. He was also the head coach for over 15 years at Keystone College. He has been selected Coach of the Year nine times in his conference and has led his squad to seven straight Conference Championships, eight NCAA (Div. 3) postseason appearances and a berth in the College World Series, in 2011. In the past six years more than 20 of his Keystone College Players have gone on to play professional baseball. The Cape League’s location helped with making the two newcomers’ decision to join the Cape League, along with the huge talent stream of players to work with on the field. “Once I heard that the Brewster job had opened, the first thing I did was speak to my wife Maria and, surprisingly, she said, ‘Go for it … I wouldn’t mind spending the summer on the Cape,’” Shevchik said. It’s an easy transition for Weinstein, who’s looking forward to the player development side, which is something he is passionate about. “These players want to be big league

players. So part of their education during the summer is to orient them towards the type of sweat equity (needed) to develop your skills so you can play in the big leagues,” said Weinstein. He began coaching in 1966 with UCLA. In 1974, Weinstein took the head coaching position at Sacramento City College. During the 23 years he spent at Sacramento, his teams went to 20 consecutive postseasons, collecting 16 league championships, one California Community College Championship (1988), one National Community College Championship (1998) and a record of 831-208. Weinstein is a member of the Sacramento City College Athletic Hall of Fame, the California Community College Hall of Fame and the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Weinstein left Sacramento in 1998 to pursue opportunities within professional baseball, most notably spending the last nine seasons with the Rockies. He held various positions within the Rockies organization: manager of the Modesto Nuts, 2007-11 (High A Affiliate); catching coordinator, 2011 (all levels); major league catching and defensive
positioning coach, 2012-14 (Colorado Rockies); offensive coordinator, 2014 (all levels); and developmental supervisor, 2015 (all levels). In addition to his experiences in professional and collegiate baseball, Weinstein served as an assistant coach for the 1987 Pan-American Baseball Team, assistant coach for the 1992 and 1996 USA Olympic Baseball Team, and was the head coach of the USA Baseball Team, which won the Gold Medal at the Maccabiah Games. He will also serve as the field manager of the Israeli National Baseball Team in the World Baseball Qualifiers in 2016. When Shevchik was the field manager for Danbury, they made five NECBL playoff appearances and captured the league’s Western Division championship in 2010 and 2012. In June 2011, he led the NECBL AllStars to a 3-2 victory over the U.S. National Collegiate team at Fenway Park. More than 20 Danbury players coached by Shevchik have been selected in Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft, 12 of them in 2014 alone. Similarly, he has had seven players from his college program drafted in the last five years, with 22 others signing free-agent or independent-league contracts in that same span. During his career at Keystone, Shevchik has compiled an impressive 467-148 overall record for a .759 winning percentage. He guided his charges to 10 straight Colonial States Athletic Conference Championships, from 2005-14, and eight straight appearances in the NCAA Regionals, from 2007-14. His 2011 club made it to the Division III College World Series. The Brewster Whitecaps and Wareham Gatemen organizations contributed to this story.

The start of a new reign: Cape Cod Baseball League new president By PRISCILLA MERRITT CCBL Senior Writer
C
huck Sturtevant has been active in the Cape Cod Baseball League for 30 years, and he’d be the first to say that all those years have prepared him for his newest role as league president. Confirmed by the Cape League’s Board of Directors in October, 2015, Sturtevant took over the reigns after longtime president Judy Walden Scarafile retired. Scarafile had been involved with the league for 45 years, serving the last 24 as president.
Chuck initially joined the league in 1987 as a board member for the Falmouth Commodores. The following year he became the Commodores’ president, a post he served until 1991. From 1991 to 2006, he was general manager and treasurer for Falmouth. At the same time, Sturtevant served on the league’s Executive Board, representing the Commodores. He was named vice president of the Cape League in 2009, and was involved in the league’s All-Star games at Fenway Park. In 2006, Sturtevant was named the first recipient of the CCBL Richard (Dick) Sullivan Executive of the Year Award. Presented annually, this award recognizes distinguished 14 | CAPE LEAGUE MAGAZINE 2016
service, outstanding leadership, and the advancement of the franchise or the league’s reputation and success. In 2012, Sturtevant moved over to the Bourne Braves and became general manager and treasurer. During his time with Bourne, Sturtevant was awarded the Cape League’s John Wylde General Manager of the Year Award two years in a row, in both 2014 and 2015. The award is named after the late John Wylde, longtime general manager and president of the Wareham Gatemen. It is given to a general manager who demonstrates the qualities and dedication that Wylde himself possessed. “I was honored that the GM of the Year award went to me.” said Sturtevant. “John Wylde and I were both considered strong managers. We helped and respected each other. Receiving the award was heartfelt and rewarding.” The 2014 Braves ended the season as Western Division champions, with the best record in the CCBL winning them the coveted President’s Cup. Chuck stepped down from the Braves organization in 2015. With his years of experience at both the franchise and league level, the Cape League’s new president brings with him the skills he’s honed as treasurer, president, and general manager of both Falmouth and Bourne. Sturtevant believes there should be a joint effort to bring the league and the franchises together to form a stronger organization. “Without the league, teams wouldn’t exist, and without the teams, the league would not exist,” said Sturtevant. “My years of experience at the franchise level make me cognizant of the needs of the
of working with Chuck on numerous different committees within the CCBL for over 25 years,” said Galop. “He is the consummate professional who has exemplary experience in every facet of baseball and business. His ability and willingness to step into this critical position within the Cape League is a significant opportunity for all of us. Coupling Chuck’s hands-on experience with his common-sense approach has already reaped many benefits for the CCBL in his short tenure from his election and appointment last fall. I honestly foresee a very bright and progressive future for the CCBL under Chuck’s leadership and tutelage. This is a very exciting time for the CCBL.” According to Sturtevant, his family has been very supportive of his lengthy involvement with the league. Chuck resides in Mashpee with his wife, Rose. They have seven children, 13 grandchildren and three great grandchildren, all of whom are baseball fans.

franchises compared to those of the league.” Nicole Norkevicius, president of the Bourne Braves, has worked alongside Sturtevant during his years as the Braves’ general manager. “The change in leadership has been a smooth transition, as Chuck has had a long tenure in the league and experience as a franchise’s GM, president, and treasurer,” said Norkevicius. This smooth transition and Sturtevant’s leadership ensures that the Cape Cod Baseball League maintains its prominence as the premier amateur summer collegiate baseball league in the country. Players from colleges around the United States come to the Cape each summer with hopes of showcasing their talents for scouts from major league baseball teams. Ten teams make up the league, which is operated through corporate sponsorships, donations and the dedication of hundreds of volunteers. In the 2015 MLB draft, the CCBL led all other summer leagues with more than 260 players selected, Including 14 in the first round. It marked the ninth year that more than 200 Cape Leaguers were drafted. Close to 300 CCBL alumni are currently playing Major League baseball. Running an organization with a reputation of this magnitude is no small task and requires a variety of talents and responsibilities. In his role as league president, Sturtevant is chief administrator, presiding over meetings and overseeing numerous committees, including finance, corporate development, public relations and marketing. Sturtevant is an accountant by trade and likens running the Cape League to operating a large company. “The Cape League is a $2.5 million corporation,” he said. “We need to start looking at it as a business, restructuring the league to operate more smoothly and logically.” Cape League Commissioner Paul Galop has worked side by side with Sturtevant for years. “I have had the pleasure and privilege

EAST Preview A fter finishing as the East Division runners-up last season with a 24-19-1 record, the Brewster Whitecaps return two players from 2015. Kel Johnson (Georgia Tech) and Brent Rooker (Mississippi St.) are back in the outfield for the Whitecaps, providing veteran leadership to a young core of players. Johnson drove in seven runs last season in his first year with Brewster, tallying eight hits—including a home run—in 14 contests. Rooker played in just four total games for the Whitecaps in 2015, collecting three hits, all of them for extra bases. Brewster welcomes four players who were Louisville Slugger Freshman All-Americans in 2015 as Reed Rohlman (Clemson), Brett Cumberland (California), Jesse Stallings (LSU) and Ryan Nutof (Michigan) join the squad for the 2016 season. Jamie Shevchik returns for his second season as Head Coach. He helped coach his team to the highest batting average in the league last year while producing the league MVP. The Chatham Anglers, who are coming off a 22-win season, are excited to welcome back the winningest Manager in Cape League history, John Schiffner. Last season Schiffner earned his 500th win, and he is entering his 24th year with the Anglers—a record for the 24 | CAPE LEAGUE MAGAZINE 2016

league. The Anglers expect to have three returning players this season: University of Richmond catcher Kyle Adams, Sacred Heart University shortstop Zack Short and a right-handed pitcher from the University of San Diego, Jonathan Teaney. Adams had a solid season behind the plate in 2015, posting a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with 93 putouts and nine assists. Short, a junior for the Pioneers, ranked second on the team with 20 RBIs and 17 walks while playing in 41 game. Teaney, a sophomore, made 10 appearances out of the bullpen in 2015, managing 16 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings in his first season. The Harwich Mariners look to bounce back after posting their first sub-.500 season in five years, going 20-22-2 in 2015. The Mariners return four players, including two key pitchers. Hunter Williams (North Carolina), who made seven starts for Harwich last year, is back for his second season while Zach Schellinger (Seton Hall) returns to the bullpen. Williams tossed 34 2/3 innings a season ago, compiling 34 strikeouts to go along with a 2-2 record and a 3.64 ERA. Schellinger led the team in appearances in 2015, making 16 in relief, spanning 33 innings. He struck out out 30 and recorded a 3.55 ERA.
Brock Deatherage (N.C. State) is back in the outfield for the Mariners after batting .254 last summer, which ranked him third on the team. Deatherage was a strong allaround performer in 2015, ranking in the team’s top five in hits, at-bats, triples, stolen bases and sacrifices. Returning for his 14th season at the helm of the Mariners is Steve Englert, who has led Harwich to a winning record in five of the last six years, including a league championship in 2011. General Manager Ben Layton is proud to have Englert back, saying that people like Englert are “in part behind the great success of the league. They all want to win and see their guys further their career once their time on the Cape is past.” After leading the league and topping the East Division standings with 31 wins in the regular season last summer, the Orleans Firebirds welcome back Kelly Nicholson, who is returning for his 16th season overall and 12th as Field Manager. The Firebirds’ roster will feature two returning members in Cal-State Northridge’s Joe Ryan and Loyola Marymount’s Sean Watkins, both right-handed pitchers. Ryan, a sophomore for the Matadors, was outstanding in his five appearances for Orleans in 2015, posting a 1.12 ERA and
THOMAS striking out 12 batters in eight innings of work. Watkins, a sophomore at Loyola Marymount, was one of the top relievers for the Firebirds, making 15 appearances and throwing 20 innings, striking out 14 batters. The Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox and General Manager Steve Faucher are back in action and looking for their third straight Cape League championship. The 2015 regular season schedule posed a great challenge to Y-D, which finished third in the East Division with a 22-22 record. The team then peaked at the right time, winning six of its eight playoff games and defeating the Hyannis Harbor Hawks 8-1 in the championship contest. Ricky Thomas (Fresno St.), a left-handed pitcher, is the only returning member of the Red Sox this season. Thomas is coming off a stellar 2015 Cape League season, where he led his team with seven wins and 45 strikeouts. Thomas’ seven regular season wins was also a league high. His excellence carried over to the playoffs, where he chalked up two wins and led the playoff clubs with 17 strikeouts. Thomas was also selected to play in the Cape League All-Star Game, where he pitched a perfect inning. His excellence carried over to Fresno State’s early 2016 season as he was leading his team with 54 strikeouts and a 4-2 record with a 1.92 ERA. CAPECODBASEBALL.ORG | 25

he West Division is entering the 2016 Cape Cod Baseball League season on a mission to bring the championship title back. The West hasn’t won the title since the 2013 season, when the Cotuit Kettleers defeated the Orleans Firebirds, 6-1, to complete a two-game sweep. The five West teams are focused on the new season, determined to regain their position at the top. The Hyannis Harbor Hawks and their General Manager, Tino DiGiovanni, are back, looking for redemption from their crushing 8-1 loss to the Y-D Red Sox in the 2015 championship game. The Harbor Hawks won the West Division title with a 24-19 record before going 5-2 in the playoffs. The team’s lone returning player is shortstop Tristan Hildebrandt, a sophomore at Cal State Fullerton. He batted .250 last summer and was one of the defensive leaders on the team, playing errorless ball in 99 innings. During the 2015 playoffs Hildebrandt batted .280 with five RBIs. The Falmouth Commodores are back with a strong core of returning players and a talented group of new faces. Under the leadership of General Manager Eric Zmuda and Manager Jeff Trundy, the Commodores look to improve upon their 2015 season, in which they finished 16-27 but still came within a final-game loss in extra innings of making the playoffs. Among the returning players is all26 | CAPE LEAGUE MAGAZINE 2016

star first baseman JJ Matijevic (Arizona), who ended the season with a 21-game hitting streak and a batting average of .333, third highest in the league. Also back for a second summer is catcher and first baseman Evan Skoug (TCU). Skoug scored 25 runs and hit .258 with the Commodores. He came to Falmouth after helping lead the Horned Frogs to the 2015 College World Series. Returning third baseman Shane Benes (Missouri) has shown perseverance since coming back from a torn ACL last year. Benes hit four home runs in 67 at-bats last summer and had 11 RBIs. Other returning Commodores include Turner Larkins (Texas A&M), Tristan Gray (Rice), Cobi Johnson (Florida State), Bo Tucker (Georgia) and Bryce Montes De Oca (Missouri). Falmouth also boasts an impressive group of newcomers, including freshmen Deacon Liput and Brady Singer from Florida, utility man Luken Baker of TCU, and third baseman Jake Burger from Missouri State. After finishing 17-27 last season, the Cotuit Kettleers look to push further into the playoffs with a crop of mostly new faces. The Kettleers fell to the Hyannis Harbor Hawks in two games in last year’s playoffs. One promising returner for Cotuit is center fielder Jeren Kendall, who was off to a strong

start this summer at Vanderbilt. Last summer Kendall batted .253 in 20 games after helping to lead Vanderbilt to the championship finals in the 2015 College World Series. He will be joined in Cotuit by fellow Vanderbilt teammates Alonzo Jones, a second baseman, and pitchers Matt Ruppenthal and Kyle Wright. Catcher Tim Susnara (Oregon) is the second player returning to Cotuit in 2016, looking to improve on last year’s .176 average and 11 RBIs in 33 games. One of the many newcomers who was enjoying an impressive collegiate season this spring is Jake Bivens (Michigan), the 2015 Big Ten Freshman of the Year. The combination of new and experienced players shows strong potential for success at Lowell Park this season. The Bourne Braves finished the regular season with a 22-20 record last summer, securing the No. 2 two spot in the West Division playoffs before losing to Hyannis. Harvey Shapiro is back at the helm, leading the team in his 13th season as Manager. Also returning is Brendan McKay (Louisville), who has compiled a long list of honors, including the 2015 John Olerud TwoWay Player of the Year award. McKay joined the Braves in mid-season last year after earning the chance to play for Team USA, a path he will follow again this summer. McKay was posting an impressive .306 batting average while also
managing a sharp 2.09 ERA on the mound this spring for Louisville. The Braves’ secure another returnee from the powerful 2015 bullpen in Doug Norman (LSU), who was posting a 3.68 ERA in 12 appearances over 14.2 innings this spring for the Tigers. The Braves’ final returning player is rising junior Corey Julks, who ended his freshman season with a .302 average for the Houston Cougars. He batted .279 average with the Braves last season. The Wareham Gatemen head into the 2016 campaign with newly named Head Coach Jerry Weinstein, along with an almost entirely new team looking to clinch a playoff spot for a second consecutive year. Weinstein spent the past nine years with the Colorado Rockies, last season as the team’s Developmental Supervisor. He replaces Cooper Ferris, who led the Gatemen to three Cape League championships in his 15 years at the helm. Wareham went 17-25 last year before losing in two straight games to Bourne in the playoffs. An entirely new team is set to create a name for the Gatemen in the 2016 season, with the exception of shortstop Preston Grand Pre (UCal Berkeley). Grand Pre was a temporary player for the Gatemen last summer before proving himself and securing a permanent spot on Wareham’s roster. CAPECODBASEBALL.ORG | 27
