Mount Isa Airport services the mining community as well as creating a gateway to North West Queensland.

rom April Qantas is providing an additionally frequency on the Brisbane – Mount Isa route of a Sunday. The additional capacity will take the frequency to a double daily service every day of the week. BE MOTIVATED BY MICHELLE BY BETTINA MANIATIS

I

t’s the beginning of the year, and statistically weight loss is at the top of the list for New Years resolutions throughout Australia. So, with this year’s Biggest Loser looking like the best season yet, I took some time out with one of the show’s inspirational Personal Trainers, Michelle Bridges and I can tell you, this girl is seriously passionate about fitness. B: Michelle, a lot of our readership is within the mining and resources industry, and their lifestyle can be very different to those who work the average 9 to 5 job - so for those wanting to lose weight in this scenario, but with no idea where to begin, where might they start? M: So much of it is about getting organised –having a plan and getting into a routine given the fact that the mining community work in shift work. That’s not all that easy I know, but just thinking ahead and planning week to week, even month to month if it’s at all possible so they can really work around it and start thinking about their nutrition and their training. Get a plan, get a diary. Really go and really try and map out time to get on with your training and with your shopping. So for example if you are in the mines, with regards to meals, set it up so you have healthy nutritional food available to you and you can do a cook up on the weekend, or when you’re at home and you can put that in the freezer and you can very easily defrost it in the microwave and maybe add a bag of salad or steamed vegetables or something. It’s about having that organisation. So I really recommend having that plan. Also, I really recommend training before or after work, because you know once you go back to your room, it’s really difficult to get back out again. Either on your way to work or straight after work. And try and make it a regular time slot to make it a part of your life.

B: OK, now for me personally, and for a lot of our readers, motivation might be an issue… M: Motivation’s a funny thing. I think motivation is like a bad boyfriend – it’s never there when you need it. So many people tend to hang their hats on motivation and use that as an excuse. So when you ask why they’re not eating healthy or exercising, you just get: “oh, I’m just not motivated.” I know as a human being, and as a personal trainer, you’re not always going to be motivated. I don’t wake up at 5 in the morning and go: “wooo bring on that 10K run! Yeahhh.” You know, I just don’t. Some mornings I have a bit of a spring in my step, but some mornings I’m just “urghhhh.” So I just get into robot mode; get my shoes on and get out the door and don’t let my head start thinking because then it’ll be like “oh maybe I’ll just train this afternoon,” or “oh it’s just one session.” So yes, I think motivation can be a bit of an excuse. That said, you can be motivated by setting yourself goals. You might want to get fit for a fun run or you might want to fit into a pair of pants – there’s your goal right there. Set yourself up for little mini goals to get yourself to your major goals. If you want motivation though, why wait until you’re being told you are a diabetic and you have to take this medication for the rest of your life? Why wait until you have a heart attack and you’re in hospital? Why wait until the choice is removed from you when you have the choice in your hands right now? What about the people who have children? Have you considered the fact that you might not be around to see your child get married? Take a look around – you don’t see very many old obese or heavily overweight people. If you’re obese, you’re lucky to make it to over 50.

Personally - I’m motivated by that! B: So for those who are quite active, can you tell me how they know if they’re being active enough? Are there some tell-tale signs that you’re doing a good ‘work out’? M: Well one of the biggest tell tale signs over and above in terms of intensity, I think, the most critical element is consistency. I think if you’re doing something every day, more power to you and congratulations. If you’re doing something every day, 30 to 40 to 60 minutes a day, preferably, then you are absolutely on the right wicket. With regards to actual intensity, there are a few ways you can monitor that. I love using my heart rate monitor and watching my heart rate go up and down and I use it as bit of a game during my workout – so spiking my heart rate and bringing it back down again. Or you know, I’ll tell myself I need to burn 500 or 600 calories during my workout before I can finish – my heart rate monitor tells me that. Another way without even having to use technology is if you can say your name and address easily, then you’re not working hard enough. If you can barely get your phone number out, or not even, then you know you’re working at a good intensity. If you are a regular exerciser, I totally recommend getting a heart rate monitor though. But the most important thing is consistency consistency consistency. B: Now the new season of Biggest Loser is underway - tell us how you feel about the contestants this year and how they compare to some of the contestants we’ve seen in the past? M: They’re doing fabulously. We have some contestants that hit the ground running and they want it want it want it and then we have

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

Issue 20

9

others who fight the system, think it’s what they want to do and then they get in there and and think “urghhhh it’s all too hard.” And of course that’s the beauty of watching the show is you see all these different personalities, on the same journey. Ultimately they all lose weight. There’s no way they can’t. We feed them healthy food, we move their bodies and they drop the weight really easily. And you see every individual journey. In comparison to other years gone by, they’re doing really well. I’m really loving this season – I think it’s probably one of our better ones.

they walked – but ultimately they did it. They did 42.2km. And you know, if they can do a marathon, any body can do a marathon. B: One of the things I’ve always wondered is how some of the people on the show start out so large - How do they get to that point? And what could some of the warning signs be as to whether you’re on that path? M: I think when I talk to people, a lot of them bury their head in the sand. They just don’t want to know about it. It’s all too hard. A lot of them say they didn’t realise how big they had gotten until they look

B: You’ve been doing Biggest Loser for a number of years now and there are some pretty inspirational stories. Can you tell us some moments that have really stuck out for you, or even if you have one favourite memory so far?

their doctors have told them they have got to do something about their weight. For others, it’s just the clothes just keep getting bigger, the messages just keep getting louder, they can’t find anywhere to sit down in a restaurant, they can’t find a seat on the plane - it’s just constant messages. The belt buckles just keep going up up up up. Or in the case of this season, because they’re singles, they realise they’re just watching their life go by, and it’s because their weight is holding them back.

n

LIQ2595MLF

M: I’ve had so many memories and moments and exhilarating times and humbling experiences, to try and think of one would be tough. But I do have to say that doing the marathon two or three years ago, that was extraordinary. I’ve done a marathon. I know how hard they are. Admittedly, I ran mine and

Static Holds for Strong Muscles BY GUDRUN OLIVER FROM PEAK PHYSIQUE PERSONAL TRAINING

I

f you are looking to add some spice to your strength training program, often it is thought that the only way to improve is to try and lift heavier. This can be challenging, as the body really likes to get comfortable at a certain level so you can be lifting the same weights for weeks with no change! The trainers at Peak Physique employ a number of great variables to your training (which I am sure many of you have experienced at one time or another). One of these techniques is the use of static holds. Also know as Isometric (static) contractions, they are a really useful way to spice up your routine, add some variety and often progress.

Try 1) 2) 3) 4)

the following: During a set of dumbbell bicep curls, continue to lift as usual throughout the set. As you near the end of the set (and your muscles are fatiguing) curl the dumbbells up to about half way. Here, attempt to hold the weight in place for an additional 20 seconds. You will experience a definite burn within your muscles and need to concentrate to hold the weight in place! Finally, lower the weight with the remaining (if any) strength you have in your biceps.

FOREPLAY KEEPING YOUR PARTNER HAPPY BY LAINIE ANDERSON OF MININGFM

et’s face it: there are times when we all feel undervalued and underappreciated. Life is busy - work, kids, bills, the list goes on. And at the bottom of the ladder is your relationship – but it doesn’t have to be this way. It’s not rocket science, but here are a couple of top notch tips to brighten your partner’s day when you get home – after all, everyone needs a gentle reminder every now and then.

1. Be Productive Folding the washing (even if you do it badly); stacking the dishwasher; or getting up off the sofa first when one of the kids screams from their bed is an incredible turn on. If we don't have to use the last of our energy doing any of these tasks, you are far more likely to be in with a chance of some nooky later on.

2. Be Thoughtful Next time you go to the video store, get two DVDs: one you know she’ll love (yes even if it’s a romantic comedy) and also that jam-packed action thriller that you're keen to see. Start watching early, right from when the kids go to bed so you can watch hers first but still have enough time to see Van Dam pulp the bad guys. If you really want to earn some points, bring home a couple of Magnums as well.

3. Make the Effort Make the effort to do something special. Ring the baby sitter or mother-in-law to look after the kids, book the restaurant, and maybe even get a hair cut. For girls, it’s all about the fact that you have been thinking ahead to plan something special.

4. Cook up a Storm

5. Dress up Dress nicely for one. We know the trackies, flannies and stubbies are comfy, but you like her in the LBD (little black dress) so how about you put on the ensemble to turn her head. Simple but effective.

6. Be Nice Be nice about her parents. Ask the outlaws over. Yes, yes, it can be hard - but showing sensitivity in tough familial situations can be a massive point-scorer.

7. Give a Gift And we don't mean to harp, but flowers are ALWAYS a winner! n

Take this relationship quiz to see how much you need to work on the 7 tips! The last time you had dinner alone with your partner was: a) in a restaurant b) in front of the television c) in 2003 The majority of your conversations are: a) over a glass of chilled white wine b) over the heads of

screaming children c) via text message In the privacy of your marital bedroom you: a) have sex b) have rows c) have his and hers TV remote controls You last shared an intimate moment (with your partner): a) last night b) last anniversary c) last time you really wanted something

Tired of Procrastinating? BY JASON URBANOWICZ, ENTREPRENEUR & AUTHOR OF MONKEY SEE MONKEY DON’T

H

ave you ever found yourself putting off important activities or jobs till tomorrow or the next day? And in the meantime, you load yourself up or get busy with activities that are not important for you to complete or do? Does an approaching deadline mean a crisis for you? Do you keep hesitating when making decisions? Procrastination is putting off until tomorrow the things that you could or should be doing today. Everyone procrastinates sometimes. Yet, what makes a big difference for your success is your ability to recognise procrastination in its different forms, and to promptly take it under control, before this bad habit steals your opportunities, damages your career, or destroys your relationships. Procrastination is a strange phenomenon. Its purpose seems to be to make our life more pleasant, but instead it almost always adds stress, disorganisation and frequently failure. The process has been described by psychologists as the below:

You have an objective, usually something you and others value and respect. There may be a deadline, so you say to yourself, “I must start.” You delay, briefly thinking of real and imagined advantages of starting later - "I'll do it tomorrow when I don't have much to do." You delay more, becoming self-critical - "I should have started sooner" - and/or selfexcusing - "I really couldn't have left the party early last night, my best friends were there." You delay still more, until finally the task has to be done, usually hastily - "Just get it done any old way" - or you just don't have time - "I can't do this!" You berate yourself - "There is something wrong with me" - and swear never to procrastinate again and/or you discount the importance of the task - "It doesn't matter." You repeat the process almost immediately on other important tasks, as if it were an addiction or compulsion. The wisest course of action, most of the time,

would be to simply do the unpleasant task as soon as practical, while we have enough time to do the job right and get it over with, not prolonging our agony. But we put it off. Why Do We Do It? While the term “procrastination” technically refers to the avoidance of a specific task that needs to be accomplished, this explanation doesn't begin to capture the emotions triggered by the word. For most of us, the word “procrastination" reminds us of past experiences where we felt guilty, lazy, inadequate, anxious, or stupid - or some combination of these. It also implies a value judgment; if you procrastinate, you are bad, and as such, lack worth as a person. Procrastination is quite complex. It involves emotions, skills, thoughts or attitudes, and subconscious reactions to various events. Furthermore, the causes and dynamics of putting off an important but unpleasant task vary from person to person and from task to

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

Issue 20

15

task for the same person. Just some of the myriad of reasons we might procrastinate include: Lack of Relevance If something is neither relevant nor meaningful to you personally, it may be difficult to get motivated to even begin. Boring The task may be boring. If a project has been imposed or assigned to you and it is not consistent with your own interests, you may be reluctant to spend the necessary time to see it to conclusion. Perfectionism Having unreachable standards will discourage you from pursuing a task. Perfection is unattainable and perfectionists know this, so are often reluctant to start. Evaluation Anxiety Since others responses to your work are not under your direct control, overvaluing these responses can create the kind of anxiety that will interfere with work getting accomplished. Ambiguity If you are uncertain of what is expected of you – your priorities, goals or objectives are unclear – it may be difficult to get started. Fear of the Unknown If you are venturing into a new realm or field,

“ITS PURPOSE SEEMS TO BE TO MAKE OUR LIFE MORE PLEASANT, BUT INSTEAD IT ALMOST ALWAYS ADDS STRESS, DISORGANISATION AND FREQUENTLY FAILURE.”

even start?

you don't have any way of knowing how well you'll do. Such an uncertain outcome may inhibit your desire to begin.

Bring to mind a task, project, goal or dream that you have been putting off – the bigger, the better.

Fear of Failure You may think that if you don't get an 'A', you are failure. Or that if you strive for something and don’t achieve it that you, as a person, are a failure. Inability to Handle the Task If through lack of training, skill, or ability you feel that you lack the personal resources to do the job, you may avoid it completely. Feeling Overwhelmed The task is so momentous that it seems impossible to achieve. Where to begin? Why

Fear and Anxiety You spend so much time worrying about the task rather than completing it. Negative Beliefs about Yourself Your inner critic tells you "I cannot succeed in anything" or "I lack the necessary skills to perform the task", ensuring you never start anything. In order to understand and solve your procrastination problems, you must carefully analyse those situations where your work is not being completed.

Purge Your Procrastination

Ask yourself… What is my goal? Why do I want to do this? What is my biggest motivation to achieve? What are the major steps to get there? What have I done so far? What other positive results will flow from achieving my goal? What stands in my way? Of those, what things are in my power to change? What resources outside myself do I need? What will happen if I attempt my task and fail? What will happen if I attempt my task and succeed? n

our level of job satisfaction fluctuates over time as interests, needs, motivation, behaviour and attitudes change in your job. When looking at your career, there are four typical stages for career progression:

THE REGIONAL QUEENSLAND LIFESTYLE EXPO Organised by Inflight Publishing / Trade Show Organisers

9th, 10th & 11th August, 2012. King George Square, Brisbane.

EXPLORATION Growing familiarity with the tasks of the role and making conclusions about whether it appeals as a long-term prospect. Enthusiasm grows in acquiring professional knowledge in the job and a high degree of energy is applied to the development of skills. Usually the first 12 months of the role. ADVANCEMENT Actively cultivating internal and external contacts and resources to help performance on the job to improve eligibility for advancement. Usually there is an increase in the difficulty of work tasks undertaken. Conflict between career and nonwork time allocation may begin to materialise. Refinement of skills is pursued eagerly and feedback from others is strenuously sought. Usually 18 months to 2 years in the role. MAINTENANCE New skills and knowledge gained on the job are no longer as stimulating as they once were and no longer retain interest to the same degree. There may be apprehension about perceived competition from colleagues or subordinates. Ambitions require adjustment and there may be times of loneliness, even when close support relationships exist. Usually 3 to 5 years in the role. This is the time where people decided to find another challenge in their career. DECLINE This stage is likely if career action steps required at the maintenance stage are not clear or are ignored. If career direction is realigned this stage can be avoided. For example, this stage may be traversed by making the effort to consolidate career aspirations or shifting from a power role to one of consultation and guidance to others through a lateral relationship. That is you may identify, negotiate and implement changes to the content of your job to achieve job enrichment. Without such adjustments, you are likely to experience declining self-esteem or waning performance. Psychosomatic symptoms may include sleeplessness, increased irritability and sometimes increased intake of alcohol, pills or tobacco. People who remain in the decline phase can end up experiencing negative career stress or career burnout. This is particularly likely to occur where they have invested too much of themselves in their job. To avoid career burnout is to constantly reflect on where you are on the career progression, evaluate what you enjoy and don’t enjoy and realign your career accordingly. Invest in career coaching and counseling or developing networks to freshen your career progression. n

e’s handsome. She’s gorgeous. Separately, they’re two of the world’s biggest country music superstars. Together, they’re an “I don’t how do they do it?” mega force. Husband and wife, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill have dominated music charts across the world since the early 90s, generated 70 million album sales and earned eight Grammys and 46 US #1’s between them. They’ve been happily married 14 years and on top of being mum and dad to three teenage daughters, they star in movies and have been immortalised as Barbie dolls made in their likeness. This March, McGraw and Hill will tour Australia together for the very first time; their first joint tour outside North America and the first time

they’ll have toured together in five years. “This tour, Tim and Faith performing together, is exclusive to us in Australia,” said promoter Michael Chugg. “They’re not doing this any where else in the world right now.” “We don’t ever want anyone to get tired of us,” McGraw told Australian radio last year speaking of the couple’s five year hiatus. “We look at it as three different careers - Faith has her career, I have my career and we have our career together, we don’t ever want to overdo that. “It’s special to us and we want it to be special for everyone else.” The couple has toured together only three times and all in North America – first in 2000, then 2006

and 2007. Their 2006/2007 tours made them the highest-grossing country music tour of all time and the highestgrossing tour that year, full stop, across any genre, beating out the likes of Madonna, Tom Petty and Crosby, Stills & Nash. For this upcoming concert, they will perform individually and together. Their shows will feature each of their massive hits including McGraw’s Live Like You Were Dying, Everywhere, Real Good Man and Hill’s Breathe, This Kiss and The Way You Love Me, as well as their duets It’s Your Love, Let’s Make Love and I Need You. Good Sports Like a promising race horse, aspects of a painting’s value can be found in its track record. How and where it has been on show, its performance and provenance. If it belongs to a well-known artist, it will be starting the race with favourable odds through its inherent breeding. There is also value in understanding the narrative and artist’s motivation for the image. A good painting will surely “speak” to you. Another way to lift an artwork’s game is by teaming it up with a high profile personality.

W

hether you are viewing a painting for its inspiration or investment potential, there are ways that enhance the appreciation process both for the viewer and the painting. How can we really tell if a painting is good or not? The beauty or impact of a painting can be a very personal thing. But there’s more to valuable art than just a pretty face.

Being rich or famous doesn’t automatically give someone cultural credibility. However being a philanthropist, art patron or sporting sponsor can. And any creative items they support tend to gain credibility from this relationship. We find many celebrities share their success through charitable foundations or as ambassadors of awareness for worthy causes. For example, Layne Beachley helps young women reach their dreams through her Aim for the Stars Foundation. Many celebrities are also private art collectors.

Over 300 world leaders from differing fields have been associated with Davson’s creative endeavours including cricket legend Ian Chappell, Surfing World Champions Mark Richards and Layne Beachley, Tennis Number One John Newcombe AO, co-owner of Newman Haas racing Carl Haas, World Champion F1 and IndyCar Champion Sir Nigel Mansell, and World Champion F1 driver and constructor Sir Jack Brabham.

Turning Point Davson the artist has taken sporting and art affiliations to a new level. Last year, she became the first artist to sponsor an international sporting event. Australia’s UltraMarathon star Pat Farmer has completed his incredible Pole to Pole run and Davson is one of the sponsors of Pat’s 21,000 kilometre run through 14 countries (see www.pole2polerun.com). “A decade ago, I was so impressed with her art that I commissioned her to create a painting for me,” Mr Farmer said. “She did, and it is a beautiful visual narrative of my life.” The commissioned painting, Turning Point, echoes his breakthrough of inner strength and tranquillity through inspired mental determination on these ultra-long marathons. Creating art works about Pat’s Pole to Pole run, which he undertook in support of Red Cross clean water projects, is one aspect of Davson’s sponsorship. 2011 was a year of ‘turning points’ for Davson as well. This includes the sale of On the Ark of Salvation, which set a new sales record at $1.3 million for a painting by a living Australian artist. Such achievements are a result of significant activities from both the art and the artist. Throughout her career, she has gained reputation and representation within public and private art collections, presented major survey exhibitions which toured in

Swap Your Home? Live like a local for less!

E

ver wanted to pack up your life for the weekend, a week or a month and experience how people live on the other side of the fence? Just as Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet did in the movie “The Holiday”, home exchange website Love Home Swap (www.LoveHomeSwap.com) allows Australians to swap their lifestyle for someone else’s while saving themselves thousands of dollars. Home swapping offers the perfect way to escape the daily grind and experience your destination like a local without the need to fork out hundreds or even thousands on accommodation. Listing your home on Love Home Swap is the perfect way to make your home “work for you” and gives home owners and even renters the opportunity to holiday more for a whole lot less. Founder of Love Home Swap, Debbie Wosskow points out that home swapping is not just restricted to home owners. “Most people think that you must own your own home in order to swap, however people who rent are also able to take part in home

exchanges,” she said. “Many landlords prefer their property to be occupied as opposed to empty while tenants travel.” Whether you want to relax by an open fire in the Blue Mountains, sip wine overlooking the Margaret River, stay at a working farm on the NSW North Coast or head overseas to experience the sunshine of the Maldives during Australia’s winter months, Love Home Swap has thousands of properties listed in more than 70 countries. What’s more you’ll be experiencing each destination like a local. “The beauty of home swapping is that it enables you to experience your destination in ways you cannot if staying in a hotel,” Debbie added. “Submersing yourself in the local way of life allows you to experience

the way others live offering a refreshing lifestyle change.” For more information, or to book your next home swap vacation, visit www.LoveHomeSwap.com n

WAYS TO PAY DOWN YOUR MORTGAGE QUICKER BY ALEX WILSON OF SAVINGSGUIDE.COM.AU

I

n the interest of keeping it brief, here are some quick top 5 ways of reducing your mortgage quicker. I don’t know about you, but the idea of having my mortgage for the full 30 years doesn’t really excite me. Join me in finding a way to pay that sucker off, quick fast

I personally would never redraw unless it

1. SET YOUR REPAYMENTS HIGHER, ALWAYS

your mortgage.

So your mortgage is $1000 every fortnight? Call your lender and request that they take $1200 if you can afford it. It will slowly add up, reduce the interest payable and slash your mortgage by many years. It also creates a really nice safety net incase rates rise and you struggle to meet your repayments (it’s called having a buffer).

2. ENSURE YOU USE A MORTGAGE OFFSET ACCOUNT This won’t save you thousands a year, though it will save you hundreds. A mortgage offset account is simply an account that is attached to your mortgage, meaning whatever dollar value sits in the account, your home loan is reduced by that amount. So instead of having your excess pay sitting in your everyday account each month, it technically sits on your mortgage, reducing the amount of interest you pay.

was something life threatening. You will be forever in a cycle of debt if you continue to redraw your useable funds from your mortgage. Instead try budgeting your money more effectively to ensure you never have the need to scrape cash off

5. REFINANCE EVERY COUPLE OF YEARS Rates change. The industry changes. Home

3. MAKE LUMP REPAYMENTS OR MINI LUMP SUM REPAYMENTS By taking a wad of cash, no matter how small or large and depositing it into your mortgage – you will save yourself thousands of dollars in interest over the long term. We have spoken about lump sum repayments previously, though if you struggle to find a spare $1000 to $5000 to deposit onto your mortgage, why not occasionally drop $100 or $200 into the account? It will all add up over the long run.

loan rates occasionally get a boost far and beyond your current interest rates and fees. This means that shopping around is always your biggest friend. Keep a close eye on the market so that when you are ready and eligible (without getting stung for exit fees) you can pounce on a better deal. It may shave years off your mortgage and save you lots of interest.

BONUS MORTGAGE TIP Ensure you pay your mortgage weekly or fortnightly, never opt for monthly. This will

4. NEVER EVER EVER REDRAW MONEY OFF YOUR MORTGAGE

save you more interest as there are only 12

It may be tempting to draw back some of that hard earned mortgage money, though remember it will bite you in the long run.

Today Tonight pronounces Big Sky's Low Rate Visa Credit Card

AUSTRALIA'S BEST CREDIT CARD

A

recent edition of nationwide current affairs program, Today Tonight, declared Big Sky’s Low Rate Credit Card as the best in Australia based on their research of the Australian market. Today Tonight highlighted the card’s defining features of $0 annual fee, $0 late fee and $0 over limit fee as the attributes that put the Big Sky card ahead of all other cards in Australia. Big Sky CEO Tony Ryan welcomed the news. “When you consider the average annual fee for credit cards in Australia is $98* our cardholders are way ahead to start with,” he said. “Then add the fact we don’t have an application fee or a late payment or over the limit fee and our cardholders genuinely are miles ahead.” Big Sky’s recommendation was part of a broader story titled ‘Bank Fee Fightback’ focusing on the nationwide revolt against excessive bank fees that has led to the

members through the provision of low fees and competitive rates for its entire 40 year history. “We’re seeing the benefits of this battle on a daily basis at the moment, with new members joining as a result of serious disenchantment with the major banks.” Mr Ryan said. Fly-in Fly-out Workers Attracted to The Rochedale Estates

A

new southern Brisbane lifestyle community which has easy access to Brisbane Airport is striking a chord with fly-in, fly-out workers in Australia’s booming mining industry. Several of the workers have bought home sites in the 1,000 lot development and developer FKP says further sales are imminent. Gary Kordic, FKP’s Executive General Manager of Developments Queensland, says the location of The Rochedale Estates, which is 14 minutes from Brisbane airport via the Gateway Motorway, is a key factor with the mine workers. “When they fly home they want to see their families as quickly as possible,” Mr Kordic said. “They don’t want to spend hours in a plane and then repeat that in a car.” Mr Kordic added that the other ‘trump card’ for The Rochedale Estates is proving to be its planned $5 million lifestyle centre, which will give residents facilities such as leisure and lap pools, tennis courts, a gymnasium, and barbecue areas a stroll from their homes. “Also swaying the workers is the environmental ‘feel-good’ factor we are creating with 35 hectares of natural bushland, parks, waterways and cycleways,” he said. “They also

find our plan for roaming security patrols gives them a feeling of comfort when they are away.” Mr Kordic expects the presence of fly-in, fly-out residents to multiply as more and more workers realise it is possible to earn big money in the mines and still enjoy the benefits of city life. “One estimate is that the mining industry will need 170,000 new workers in the next five years,” he added. “It’s apparently cheaper for mining companies to fly workers in and fly them out than rent homes for them.” The Rochedale Estates is on the doorstep of the Gateway and Pacific highways and is 15km from the Brisbane CBD. A park ‘n’ ride terminal and the Westfield

Garden City and Carindale shopping centres are nearby. The masterplanned community has a 1km frontage to Rochedale’s Gardner Road, which is being transformed from a country road to a four-lane thoroughfare. Work on a display village, which will have up to 50 houses and be Queensland’s biggest, is well advanced. Prices start from $299,500 for land and $480,000 for house and land. PROTEIN POWDERS W BY BRAD SHEPPARD OF PEAK PHYSIQUE PERSONAL TRAINING

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

ith so much conflicting information about eating programs these days, it’s no wonder that people are turning their interests to supplementation as an adequate source of nutrition. Regardless of the nutritional strategy you employ, there will be some “expert”, or feature on TV that has you questioning exactly what to do. Supplementation has been hot on the lips of people after the Pan Pharmaceuticals indecent. Quite frankly of all the supplements that I have sampled and protein powders consumed, I have yet to find one to make me hallucinate. In addition to this you will find many nutritionists that will suggest that supplementation is completely unnecessary, and there may well be some truth to their argument. At the end of the day, you can satisfy your daily protein requirements with “real foods”, but sometimes it just too hard to prepare that chicken breast in between meetings. Consuming a shake on the other hand is virtually no problem at all. I found myself laughing at a supplement advertisement in a U.S.A. bodybuilding magazine where the caption read; “you may never eat real food again!” What’s more, some of those protein supplement shakes taste so damn good, with flavours like café-moccachinno and caramel honeycomb, you just can’t go wrong! So with this in mind, there may be some truth to the supplement company’s motto!

The Facts • Whilst engaged in regular activity, you need somewhere in the vicinity of

2g of protein per kg of lean bodyweight per day (this may increase as you

MORE antioxidants than regular chocolate, and has 20 times more than green tea! Now, don’t get me wrong, raw chocolate is definitely not a new thing. The Mexican Mayan kings were known to drink up to 30 pure chocolate drinks a day to maintain their vigour, and valued the bean so highly that it was used as currency! Raw chocolate lowers blood pressure and cardiovascular disease risk, improves memory and concentration, is a tonic for muscles, nerves and kidneys, prevents and treats enlarged prostates and can even prevent sunburn. Being classed as a ‘super food,’ many raw foodists and chocolate lovers alike incorporate raw chocolate into every day – even for breakfast! Mix some raw cacao powder into milkshakes, smoothies or hot drinks. Mix raw cacao beans with nuts and seeds as a snack. There are also an increasing variety of healthy raw chocolate bars, icecreams and desserts available in health food shops. And most of these preparations are sugar free, using low GI agave syrup or coconut sugars instead. YUM! Start your day with a natural high! ueensland Country was born out of the mines in the 70s and is now Queensland’s number one regionally based Credit Union. Their focus is about making a difference in the lives of their members and their communities. Queensland Country recognises the important role not-forprofit groups play in a community but also understands the difficulties these small organisations experience in self-funding activities and services. In acknowledgement of this, Queensland Country provides funding to not-for-profit groups through its Community Grants Scheme. The scheme, an initiative which also echoes the Credit Union’s commitment to contributing to local communities, aims to increase the quality of services and projects in their local areas. Most importantly, the scheme offers groups an opportunity to offset or fully fund the costs in developing and implementing widely beneficial community projects. Since 2004, Queensland Country has given away over $1.3 million in support of health, education, sports, environmental and arts and culture endeavours, through the Community Grants Scheme. Past funding initiatives delivered under the Queensland Country Community Grants Scheme include: • resurfacing a bicycle education track • restoring a cenotaph • establishing a community based suicide prevention program • purchasing books for a children’s reading program • acquiring nutrition teaching aides • establishing a nature trail • purchasing a wildlife thermal support cabinet • replacing a flue in a gas kiln • purchasing portable defibrillators Applications are now open for Queensland Country’s 20122013 Community Grants Scheme and groups seeking funding assistance are encouraged to visit www.qccu.com.au to download the brochure and application form. Applications for funding close on Friday 11 May 2012. n

2012 ULTRA 300X The Fastest Jet Ski on the Planet

A

s an innovator of the personal watercraft since the first jet ski, Kawasaki has a long history of high performance on the water and now, Kawasaki's flagship, the Jet Ski Ultra 300X, pushes the performance envelope even further. With incredible boost from an Eaton Twin Vortices Supercharger, the big Kawasaki Ninja-inspired marine engine pumps out 300 horsepower* through an all new pump for incredible hook-up and acceleration. Not only is the 2012 Ultra 300X high powered, but it's also high-tech. Riders can adjust hull attitude with the electric trim system, there's an electronic throttle valve with electronic cruise control, fuel saving ECO mode and an all digital instrument panel.

SKI STX-15F, making long distance cruising even more accessible and inviting.

Cruising Range Offering more fuel capacity than any machine in its class, the Ultra 300X’s 78-litre fuel tank holds 14 litres more than the JET

Fuel Injected High-flow fuel injectors with 4 orifices are fitted to complement the increased power output and to improve combustion

efficiency. A single throttle body is used with a bore diameter of 60 mm. New Impeller To suit the new 160mm jet pump, the Ultra 300X gets a new impeller redesigned to efficiently convert all the extra power into forward thrust. New Race Bred Hull Design The new hull now features two separate flush ports for the engine and intercooler and offers the industry's best stability responsive handling in calm and rough water. Deep 22.5 degree V-angle at the bottom of the hull provides better "grip" for racing like performance.

Exhaust The Ultra 300X features a 4-into-2-into-1 powerboat-style exhaust system, which routes the exhaust pipe upwards. This allows the smoothest flow for exhaust gases, maximising exhaust efficiency.

For more on the 2012 Ultra 300X, visit www.kawasaki.com.au/jet-skis/view-fullrange/2012-ultra-300x n * Measured in PS at the crankshaft under controlled conditions. Actual performance may vary.

Be a COMPASSIONATE Traveller BEING AN ANIMAL IN THE TOURIST INDUSTRY IS NO HOLIDAY…

T

he World Society for the Protection of Animals is concerned that cruelty, confinement, neglect and abuse means millions of animals worldwide pay a heavy price for tourist entertainment – many even pay with their lives. “Whether it’s posing for a photo with an animal, visiting a poorly run zoo or watching a show where animals are forced to perform, tourist activities that involve the mistreatment of animals only exist because tourists continue to support them,” said WSPA Programs Manager Emily Reeves. “By making animal-friendly choices on their next overseas trip tourists become what we call Compassionate Travellers, and they’ll be helping to end the exploitation of animals for tourism around the world.” WSPA’s Compassionate Traveller program offers tourists a series of animal-friendly travel tips so they don’t unwittingly contribute to activities that exploit animals. It may seem obvious but, absorbed in the holiday spirit, many travellers think nothing of witnessing cruel

scenes they would normally object to in their home surroundings. Emily said animal shows were a classic example of people not considering what the individual animal must go through for the sake of tourist entertainment. “Animal performances such as bears riding bikes and boxing orangutans are not only unnatural and degrading, but can be extremely stressful for the animal and often involve harsh training techniques,” she said. “Another common tourist activity is posing with a wild animal, but many of these animals have been removed from the wild and are sedated so they remain placid.” For some travellers, seeing animals misused for entertainment or noticing animal welfare issues not so prominent at home (such as large stray dog populations or maltreated working animals) can leave them feeling helpless and distressed. “We’ve received many complaints from travellers angered by acts of animal cruelty,” Emily said. “One was from a tourist upset by the poor condition of emus that were used for rides at a zoo in central Thailand.” “Another came after a couple visited an Indonesian resort where elephants were treated poorly. Some elephants were used for rides while others were chained in extreme heat for the entire day without shelter or water.” “Another complaint involved a crocodile farm in Malaysia where a secondary attraction was a bear that performed tricks. The bear

was kept in a tiny exposed enclosure that was lower than the level of the crocodile swamp, so when it rained, as it often does, the cage flooded. The cage floor was mud most of the time.” While scenes like this can be harrowing, the average holiday maker is in a position to make a difference. In the mid 1990s, tourists in Greece and Turkey played a major role in WSPA’s successful campaign to end the dancing bear trade in these countries simply by practicing animal-friendly travel. Dancing bears live out their days dragged from town to town by a rope or a chain, dancing primarily for tourist entertainment. The bears are taken from the wild as cubs and have a hole pierced through their lips, nose or palate and a chain or rope attached. Pulling on the rope causes the bears intense pain and this is used make them ‘dance’. Visitors to Greece and Turkey became Compassionate Travellers by not supporting the trade and reporting what they saw to tour operators and local governments who quickly realised the damage the dancing bear industry was causing to tourism. The dancing bears were all confiscated and now live in forest sanctuaries built by WSPA. “What happened in Greece and Turkey shows the rapid change that can occur if tourists choose to spend their money on cruelty-free attractions and report what they see to local authorities,” Emily said. “We’re

all responsible for ensuring our actions abroad don’t contribute to animal suffering, and by following some simple animal-friendly travel trips we can all do our part to reduce the exploitation of animals in the tourist trade worldwide.” To download WSPA’s Compassionate Traveller: Animal-friendly Travel Guide, visit www.wspatravel.org n

So Much to Learn

BY RICHARD STOKES EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE AUSTRALIAN BOARDING SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION ADAPTED FROM A PIECE WRITTEN BY PETE UPHAM, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, USA BOARDING SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION If we're honest, weren't many of us just so constituted? In any event, my time in the classroom as a teacher, and my somewhat longer stints in administration and residential life, has convinced me that what we aim to instruct in economics is quickly forgotten, in English literature frequently unattended, and in personal ethics, well, simply disregarded. Meanwhile and moreover, if the students are anything like my children, they possess an unsettling capacity to identify and probe the failures, deficits, and inadequacies of the adults in their lives. In my bleaker moments, I think what we teach we teach not to produce learning now, or even to prevent the inevitable errors, poor decisions, and moral lapses that seem intrinsic to human nature, but rather to give students a vocabulary they can use in the future to begin to make sense of their imminent—one hopes not-too crippling or colossal—mistakes. Our schools are schools of things— buildings and landscapes and smart boards and laptops. They are schools of ideas— replete with often-brilliant dialogues and

impressive designs. But most of all, they are schools of people. I believe that's the secret sauce of schools: not the new, green, science buildings; not the computerised elliptical machines; not even the curricula as carefully measured, fertilized, and manicured as the irrigated athletic fields so perfect they make me want to give up lawn care forever and trade in my mower for apartment life. n AIR 212

N

ot everywhere, and not for all, but for many of our schools, it's been an uncertain, challenging, even difficult last few years—a time of reappraisals, reorganisations, reforms, and in some cases, reductions. All this doing over and overdoing was added to the not inconsiderable demand of simply being a good school for the students in your care. A good school: a dream, daunting, inspiring, and sometimes as elusive as the desire to be a good parent. For despite all of our science and quasi-science, our laws, our best practices, our bowing shelf of expert manuals and management tomes, there is something about our work that, terrifying as it may seem, survives on something like sheer nerve and improbable faith. The faith is not always religious, per se, but it is the faith in a future one cannot reliably forecast or even reasonably hope to expect. Things unseen. We are trying to teach people who know everything—teenagers—things they naturally find it superfluous to learn. Now in seriousness, I was a teenager who was determined to learn everything the hard way.

THINK OUTSIDE THE HOTEL ROOM T

raditionally hotels are a place to rest your head at the end of the day however increased competition and sophisticated travellers have driven properties to differentiate themselves through unique characteristics. A Microbrewery Rydges Campbelltown Hotel in Sydney has made it possible to have a beer after a hard day with its own contemporary bar with a working micro brewery. It expands onto a large alfresco deck and garden area and serves an all day dining menu with emphasis on tapas style food.

A Whale Watching Station Quarterdecks Harbour Retreat in Hervey Bay makes it possible for whale lovers to spot a glimpse of the giant mammals. The hotel offers organised scenic flights and tours to see the whales during the months of July to October. What’s more, guests can book the Ultimate Whale Watch package from $310* per person including two nights’ accommodation, a half-day whale watching cruise, an early morning scenic flight and courtesy pick-ups. A gourmet lunch, complimentary bottle of wine, daily newspaper and late check out are also included. Glass Bottom Hotel Set in The Rocks in Sydney, The Sebel Pier One is built on and over the water. The lobby features glass flooring that looks down onto the harbour.

TALK BACK WITH

Charli Robinson OCCUPATION: Breakfast radio host - SeaFm , TV Host - It’s a Knock Out and The Dirt (my own nightly entertainment radio show nationally).

FAVOURITE TRAVEL DESTINATION AND WHY: I seem to have travelled for work so much internationally that my holidays are happily in Port Stephens, NSW with family. When I have managed to jet off for pleasure my favourite is a train ride through Italy. Stopping at little towns, drinking beautiful wines and eating copious amounts of pasta! My hidden treasures include Asolo and Corinaldo. WHAT DO YOU NEVER TRAVEL WITHOUT AND WHY: A universal adapter! Phone chargers, laptops, even hair straighteners are not worth living without. I get so homesick without texting family all the time while away! TRAVEL TIP: During my ten years touring with Hi5 I did a lot of sight-seeing alone. It taught me no matter how beautiful a building, breath taking a mountain or sunset, having someone to share that with makes it so much more memorable and special. I’d take my dad on tour to the UK as much as possible and beers in pubs and old English

museums were all the more incredible! So my tip, travel with the one you love or friend you make while travelling - and get ready for fun!

MOST EMBARRASSING/FUNNY TRAVEL STORY: My first international trip, I was in Hi5 and I had left my passport beside my bed at my parent’s house, three hours drive from Sydney airport! The rest of Hi5 had to go on their flight, while I waited alone at the airport. It was Christmas and I sat crying, but then a Santa started singing to me to cheer me up! So random but needed! Three hours went by while the most expensive courier ride ever delivered my passport two minutes before the last flight to NZ closed check in! I made it- and my first overseas journey began. I’ve never forgotten my passport again! WHAT’S COMING UP FOR YOU IN 2012? There will be a lot of travel! I’ve just started breakfast radio on the Gold Coast which I love, and still work in Sydney often for my Dirt show. Filming It’s a Knock Out was hilarious fun and a reminder how much I love being in front of the camera. This year, I’ll enjoy my new jobs and make the most of my new coastal life style. n
