DeGrussa Sandfire Resources’ new DeGrussa copper-gold mine, 150km north of Meekatharra, is rapidly taking shape just over two years after one of Australia’s most exciting greenfields discoveries first burst onto the scene.
I
n early 2009, Sandfire Resources was a little-known penny-dreadful West Perth exploration company which had laid off most its staff during the global financial crisis. Today it is an emerging mid-tier miner worth approximately $1 billion. Next year it will commission Western Australia’s largest copper mine. Such has been the meteoric rise of one of the new faces of the West Australian mining scene – with the company forecast to generate billions in dollars of cash flow in the coming years from one of the world’s highest grade greenfields copper-gold discoveries. Early next year, Sandfire will produce the first copper ore from an initial open pit mine. At a grade of more than 25 per cent copper, the direct shipping ore will require only minimal processing before being exported.
Sandfire’s Managing Director Karl Simich says the company was determined from the outset to make the most of its good fortune in making the April 2009 discovery by attracting the best people and moving the project into production as quickly and efficiently as possible. “I think we’ve done that – we’ve achieved all our milestones, ticked all the boxes and put everything in place in record time,” Simich said. “We have a great team of people, a very positive spirit across the organisation, and we’ve created a place where people really want to come to work every day.” From an initial discovery which featured a lonely RC drill rig in the middle of the featureless scrub and bush in the Murchison region some 900km north of Perth

“We have a great team of people, a very positive spirit across the organisation, and we’ve created a place where people really want to come to work every day.” - Karl Simich, Sandfire Managing Director and 150km north of the gold mining centre of Meekatharra, DeGrussa is now a hive of activity with a sprawling site featuring an underground and open pit mine development, a construction site for an on-site concentrator and an accommodation village and office facilities. A sealed access road is rapidly taking shape, connecting the Great Northern Highway to a 600-room accommodation village, offices and workshops – all serviced by a newly installed fibre-optic link and Telstra’s Next G mobile phone network. At press time, the open pit had passed the halfway point to the first direct shipping ore; the decline in the underground mine had advanced to around half the distance from surface to the first underground ore; and construction of the 1.5Mtpa DeGrussa concentrator by Abesque was in full flight and on track to be completed and commissioned in the third quarter of 2012. This state-of-the-art underground and open pit mining complex is being developed to extract high-grade copper-gold resources containing over 650,000 tonnes of copper metal and 740,000 ounces of gold – which were defined by a 16-month drilling program that involved some 200,000m of diamond drilling. These resources will underpin an initial mine life through until 2020, although Simich and his geological team are confident that additional resources will be discovered, both in close

proximity to the mine and within Sandfire’s broader 400 sq km tenement holding – where a major ongoing exploration push is underway. But for now, Sandfire’s main focus is on moving DeGrussa into production as quickly and efficiently as possible. Even before completing the Pre-Feasibility Study on the DeGrussa Project in March 2011, Sandfire had recruited most of its senior project development and operations people. “We are in the luxurious position of having a superb asset,” Simich said. “Compared with some of the other mines I’ve been involved with, DeGrussa is blessed with phenomenal grade, proximity to infrastructure, a great location in a well-established mining district, and relatively straightforward mining parameters. “Having said all that, we still have to make
www.inflightmagazine.com.au
sure we do the job well. “There’s no such thing as a mine that runs itself but because it is a quality project, we’ve been able to attract some of the best talent available in the mining industry. “We want to become known in the market as a company that quietly gets on with its business, delivers on what it says it will do, and doesn’t overhype its potential. “We want our performance to speak for itself. “Of course, everyone wants to know when we’ll find the next one,” Simich continues. “The prospective mine corridor extends for up to 22km and we’ve really only scratched the surface in terms of deeper and wider drilling. “I don’t see DeGrussa as a one-hit wonder; I see it as the beginning of something truly significant and with an annual exploration
spend of over $20 million, there is a fantastic opportunity to make further discoveries and build a long-life operation.” Sandfire will soon be commencing its next phase of recruiting for operations personnel for the Process Plant and further development of the mine. Relationships: Working as a Team

Issue 19

BY JASON URBANOWICZ, ENTREPRENEUR & AUTHOR
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RELATIONSHIPS THAT WORK AND THOSE THAT DON’T IS HOW WELL WE DEAL WITH THE CHALLENGES WE FACE TOGETHER
I
f you’re having trouble in your relationship, you’re not alone. The battle for marriage is on as half of American marriages, 40 per cent of Australian unions and a third of Canadian and New Zealand nuptials end in divorce. It’s scary that Australia has one of the highest divorce rates in the world. Each year, around 50,000 people get divorced – and just under half of those divorces involve children. Marriage breakdowns cost the nation up to $6 billion each year. In Japan, the divorce rate has risen by 26.5 per cent in 10 years. In China, the number of divorces has been steadily rising since 1980 when the figure was just 341,000; in 2007 that figure was about 1.4 million.
Modern relationships just aren’t working. Why? What was good enough for our parents doesn’t seem to be good enough for us. We are no longer willing to make the enormous personal sacrifices that our parents and grandparents made. We demand (and deserve) lasting happiness, intimacy and passion with a single partner and if we don’t get it, we are prepared to sacrifice the relationship – personal fulfilment is now more important than the family unit.
So what’s the solution? It’s not divorce, separation or self-sacrifice. The answer lies in learning to create relationships that support our personal fulfilment. There is nothing wrong with wanting more than our parents did. The truth is times have changed and our values have changed with them. The new problems we are facing are not symptoms of failure, but the result of the evolution of our society. Our changing values have served us well, but they do pose some new problems. When both partners are unhappy, the relationship they have cannot be fulfilling. The statistics say it all: one in five marriages end in divorce within five years, and more than one in three end within 20 years. More often than not, divorce (or break up) is the result of one or both partners panicking. When we do not have the skills, the support, or sometimes the maturity to push through a layer of difficulty (which could lead to considerable growth), we abandon ship. This decision is often encouraged by the belief that “if I could just find the right partner, everything would be wonderful”. While this concept is certainly good to pursue as an ideal, it’s often flawed because it’s the same “us” that we take wherever we go.
The “panic and abandon” mentality often does more damage than sticking it out. If we are in a difficult relationship, it can seem like the “cut and run” approach will save us pain, but this is often not the case. There are some common early warning signs that we can all look for. If you identify any of the signs below in your relationship, it’s time to put some serious effort into nurturing your partner and your union. Below are just a couple of early warning signs of a troubled relationship:
Bickering and nitpicking are the norm Have you noticed that either you or your partner seem overly critical of the other, focusing on one another’s flaws or faults or perceiving faults where there really aren’t any? Are you constantly quarrelling about inane issues? Are there times when you can’t even remember what you’re fighting about? Little quarrels can lead to big problems. When bickering replaces conversation, nothing gets addressed or resolved. Instead, tension builds and a power struggle ensues. Anger, blame and resentment can become your bedfellows.
Avoidance is an everyday affair Do you seem to avoid deep and meaningful conversations? Are either or both of you absorbed in TV, books or other distractions? Is the table quiet during meals, and the mornings spent with noses stuck in newspapers? Does one or both of you seem to be distant, distracted, or miles away in your thoughts? Are you daydreaming more than usual? Like it or not, straight talk is healthy. Without it, you will lose your boundaries and values. Avoiding difficult conversations simply delays the
inevitable. Real differences in a partnership don’t have to cause problems, especially when they are explored with respect. When you remain silent and stoic, repressed feelings become part of a toxic cocktail that kills relationships.
So what do we do? The first step towards a lasting, rewarding relationship is accepting that conflict is inevitable. Marriage (or living together) involves two people being with one another in a relationship for up to seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day, year in, year out. This creates a great deal of physical closeness as we eat, drink, sleep and relax in the same house. And of course on the other hand, for those in the mining industry for example, you can be away from your relationship for long periods at a time. The bottom line is that we care for each other and often have high expectations of how we want to be treated by one another. Being human, we occasionally let each other down. We all experience problems in one-way or another – its part of sharing our lives with another human being. The difference between relationships that work and those that don’t is how well we deal with the challenges we face together. n

Top 10 Tips for Working Away:
A Survival Guide for Families 1.
Don’t assume your life is tougher than the person who’s away/at home. It’s natural to feel this way but getting into a competition about it all won’t help your relationship.
2. Show a little enthusiasm when you’re reunited. Yes, this takes an effort sometimes, especially when you’ve had a
bad day or been flying for hours to get back home – but the rewards can be big.
3.
To help your children cope, never talk about Mum/Dad ‘going away’ or ‘leaving’. It should always be Mum/Dad is ‘going to work’. They’re just words, but children take things very literally.
4.
When you are home with the kids, work together to make a special bracelet, card, book or other object to act as a reminder of your bond. Something pocket-sized is great because it can be carried around and treasured every day.
5. Start out with a team plan. What do you
www.inflightmagazine.com.au
Issue 19
15
want to achieve personally and professionally? If you’re part of a united team with very clear goals, this can be your focus when times get tough.
6.
Agree on a realistic list of jobs that need doing around the house on the days you’re together – and then write them down. This cuts out the need for nagging and arguments about being nagged.
7.
Don’t organise a massive amount of social activities for the time you’re together. Some couples have a rule of just one catch-up with friends or family over the break at home.
8.
Talk about any problems that arise as a symptom of the lifestyle, rather than as a relationship problem. This will help you tackle issues together as a team, rather than thinking there is ‘something wrong’ with your relationship or either one of you.
9.
Differing libidos challenge most longterm relationships. For couples who often live and work apart, there’s the added pressure of separation. It’s important to talk openly and honestly about your satisfaction with your sex life.
10. If phone contact isn’t possible, get clever about staying connected: hide little love notes in the suitcase/around the house; read the same book or watch the same DVD as your partner; write a special note to each other for every day you’re apart – to be opened at the same time each day. n

Green Head. This town’s white sandy beaches are great for swimming and snorkelling. Offshore islands and reefs are perfect for fishing and scuba diving and inland areas are awash with wildflowers during spring. Green Head is a water lover’s paradise with protected bays for families and ideal weather conditions for a range of water sports. Surfers can enjoy a good reef break at Point Louise and excellent wind surfing conditions when the breeze comes in. There’s also a good chance you’ll be able to catch your lunch fishing off the jetty. A protected concrete boat ramp is available at the main jetty and there’s another located at South Bay. South Bay and Dynamite Bay are secluded bays offering peaceful retreats for people wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. South Bay is ideal for those who enjoy the solitude of a deserted beach and Dynamite Bay offers a protected swimming beach. Situated north of Jurien Bay and east of Green Head, the Lesueur National Park features approximately ten per cent of the state’s known flora and is home to almost 900 species of wildflowers, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. The best time to visit is in spring, when wildflowers are in full bloom. Explore the wildflowers and the dramatic landscapes created by the Lesueur Fault and Cockleshell Gully formation on the 18-kilometre bitumen loop road or on a tour from Cervantes. Travel
Safe
Let your hair down without the risk
T
he holiday season has well and truly arrived and with it, warm weather and long balmy nights. The festive season usually motivates people to clean the BBQ, put on their party clothes and invite friends and family over. Alternatively people dust off their luggage, pack a few essentials and get on a plane for a holiday. For young and old alike, holidays in exotic locations are a lovely way to relax and unwind. The thought of lying by a pool, sipping on cocktails and meeting new friends is very enticing. Sometimes friendships can go further and it is very common for people to have romantic casual flings when they are away. However, letting your hair down is not without risks so it is prudent to remember what some of the risks are that exist in unfamiliar locations. Acquiring a sexually transmissible infection is certainly one of those risks which can be avoided. So how can you avoid or at least minimise your sexual health risks when you are away? It is essential to use condoms and lube if you are having sex with a fellow traveller or a local. This is really important because HIV and other STIs are far more common in Australia’s neighbouring countries. Many people in other countries do not know that they have HIV, so it is wise to take responsibility for yourself. For some people, this may also mean limiting the amount of alcohol they have so that they can ensure they use condoms. If you have slip up when you are away, make sure you have a sexual health screen when you get home so that you can get appropriate treatment. So have a great time when you are away. Even if you play hard make sure you stay safe. Remember to take responsibility for your sexual health and use condoms. Don’t come home with any unwanted bumps, lumps or infections, but rather fantastic memories of a great time away. n

The Art
of Property Investment: it’s all about your future BY BOB ADAMS
R
etirement isn't always top of mind when we're busy balancing the demands of family, kids and career. We get so focused on the day-to-day that we forget to plan ahead. Here are some great tips on using the property market to boost your retirement income. Why is financial certainty so important? The reality is that very few Australians (less than 5 per cent) retire with an annual income of more than $50,000. Most people fail to maintain or improve their lifestyle when they actually have the time to enjoy themselves. Years of hard work may be wasted and they find themselves simply surviving after they retire. How do you define financial certainty? When you retire, owning your own home and having an income of $100,000 per year. This gives you the flexibility to travel, play golf, support your family and all those other fun activities.
Why invest in property? It's been a consistently strong performing asset, especially when you apply a businesslike selection process. My two biggest tips for getting started are: • Understanding the property clock: Like most things, property moves in cycles. Sometimes it's a great time to buy, other times to sell. There are many variables that come into play. Knowing where your area is in the cycle is one vital key to profitable investing. • Don’t buy on emotion: Far too many people either buy in their local area or their favourite holiday destination. Sometimes this is a great decision, but most often emotions take over and vital information is forgotten or not taken into account. So, how do miners get financial certainty? The majority of miners earn better than average incomes. If you are earning over $80,000 and have a reasonable amount
of equity in your home, you are in a great position to purchase an investment property. This column was originally published on the Mining Family Matters website www.miningfm.com.au n Bob Adams is an experienced property researcher with a proven history of successful property investment. For the past 12 years he’s conducted constant research to seek out investment properties that will outperform the market – he then matches suitable investment properties to clients. Light the Night Before you decide that your bathroom is way too small for anyone to enjoy, think about simple ways of making the room look bigger. It is recommended that you go with porcelain tiles as opposed to natural stone, as they are a fraction of the price and much easier to access. Similarly, look for discontinued lines of tiles. They’ll be much cheaper to purchase. Just ensure that you buy enough to replace a

Carbohydrate
Special
Indulge without the Bulge
BY BRAD SHEPPARD, DIRECTOR AT CREATE PT WEALTH www.createptwealth.com.au
38
Issue 19
www.inflightmagazine.com.au
Countless Carbohydrate Confusion Carbohydrates are hot on everyone’s lips at the moment. People are on a modified carbohydrate diet, the famous “Atkins diet”, not eating carbohydrates after 3pm, eating carbohydrates by themselves and some not eating any carbohydrates at all!
Read the pages of any celebrity magazine and you will most likely come across a story about how the most famous of the stars will whip themselves into shape by simply “eliminating carbohydrates” and, as they often proclaim (complimented by the elongated after shots), “the results are amazing”! But can we really eliminate carbohydrates all together? Are carbohydrates friend or foe? And why do popular and commonly held beliefs about nutrition such as the healthy eating food pyramid, supported by the Government, suggest that as much as 80 per cent of our daily nutrients come from carbohydrates? So, who do we believe? Sure, the look of the celebrities could be considered desirable for many, but going against the advice of the Government’s healthy food pyramid might not be considered optimal.
Let’s look at some facts: • Carbohydrates are your body’s preferred source of energy • Carbohydrates are the most useful for your brain functioning • Over consumption of carbohydrates can trigger off a dramatic insulin response which can make you fat Importantly, remember that a calorie is a calorie and quite simply if you consume more calories that you require or utilise then you will get fat. In any reduction program, if you are not doing sufficient activity to burn off ingested nutrients, regardless of how low fat the food may be, you won’t get the results you are after! To put it simply, it is safe to reduce carbohydrates if you have a specific purpose, however you must eventually replenish your body’s supplies of glycogen (produced in the liver from the conversion of carbohydrates to energy). Carb Friendly Beers If you enjoy your liquid gold but are concerned with watching what it may do to your waistline, you may be interested to know that there are some options that may suit you. First, lets discuss what is actually in beer that may upset your diet plans! Beer tops the alcohol bad list with approximately 140 calories and 8g of carbohydrates per average serve. Although one or two beers are not too bad, after having four beers and half a take away pizza, you can see the calories may really build up! What’s great though is that some companies have recognised the need to drink beer, but have made it friendlier by reducing the carbohydrates. Examples include Carlton Pure Blonde, Tooheys Super Dry and Big Head beers. Try some of these options out and see if you can indulge without the bulge. But remember, sometimes it’s not the beer that makes you fat, but the nuts you eat with it. n

Boys, get your Toys in 48 hours

i all. Pleased to meet you all (well, nearly meet you all). My name is Paul McKinley, and I am the Director/ Proprietor of Finance 48.
We're a finance broker that specialises in funding cars, bikes, boats, and equipment. That's all we do. We don't do mortgages, debt consolidations, or raise working venture capital. We specialise. We do a lot for guys in the mining sector, especially guys (and girls) on FIFO. They love their toys, and so do I. With a motorbike (Boulevard M109), Jet ski (Yamaha SHO), and a Boat (Four Winns S215), my wife says "that's enough!" More to the point, I share your passion. We can arrange the finance, all insurances, and mechanical warranties on the above. Dealer and private sales are most welcome. I'm also a Chartered Accountant, and we do a lot of commercial funding (again, primarily vehicles and equipment), so would love to assist with your next purchase. We also can arrange and have settled all your finance, so when you fly back in, you can just go and pick up your new toy!
So please, have a look at our our site, and give me a buzz on (08) 9227 7233 www.finance48.com.au
Our services include: • Finance • Insurance • Mechanical warranties (for cars, bikes, boats, trucks) • Car locator service • Quick turnaround times (48 hours, from initial chat, to bum in the seat, driving away) • Competitive finance rates

The Boy’s Toy Genie – Part 2
Commercial Finance From an Accountant?
L
ast issue, we delved into the subject of boy’s toys and the sad but true fact that many grown men still pine after that dream sports car, motorbike, jet ski or the like. Finance 48 came to the rescue with their quick loan approvals and motto: “Drive away in 48 hours.” This issue, we’ll look into Finance 48’s “points of difference” and the topic of commercial lending – another of the company’s specialities. Finance 48 can assist in buying a vehicle or equipment for business use and on top of that, ensure maximum tax benefits and minimum repayments. “Finance 48 have a few points of difference, one of which being that I’m also a chartered
accountant,” said Paul McKinley, director at Finance 48. “It means I can guide our clients more quickly and efficiently, helping them structure their finance so as to maximise the taxation and cash flow benefits for their business.” Confused about chattel mortgages, hire purchase, and finance leases? Just ask Paul. This is his specialty. “It’s better for our clients as they’re not having to go to their accountant separately and pay per the hour for their advice,” he said. “I do all of that as part of the service.” And when it comes to a loan, there’s no need to stress about the idea of fluctuating repayments as Finance 48’s loan payments are fixed for the
life of the agreement. “What’s more, we use a panel of national lenders including Esanda Finance, Macqurie Lending, GE Finance, and Liberty Financial,” Paul said. “We’ll shop around to ensure you get the most competitive interest rate. “We’ve got no particular loyalty or allegiance to any particular lender.” Whether it comes to an equipment loan, commercial car loan or even a novated lease (employer paid vehicle finance), Finance 48 have you covered – with your best interests at heart. For more information, give Finance 48 a call on 08 9227 7233. n

he all-new 2012 model of Suzuki’s bestselling goanywhere adventure tourer, the V-Strom 650, has touched down in Australia. A perfect fit for riders seeking a multipurpose machine as capable on the streets as it is on outback roads, the Suzuki V-Strom 650 offers extreme versatility to suit the Australian terrain and lifestyle. Launched to the world’s media earlier this year to the highest of accolades, the latest generation Suzuki V-Strom 650 sets a new benchmark in the adventure touring category, with an enhanced focus on rider comfort and features advanced technology from Suzuki. Significant refinements have been made across the whole machine, including six kilograms being shaved off the total weight, an updated fuel injection system and reduced mechanical losses within the engine, resulting in improved fuel economy. The state-of-the-art fuel-injected 645cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC, 90-degree, V-Twin engine features new cam profiles and pistons and a newly designed crankshaft for greater lowto-mid-rpm range torque and sporty quick-revving high rpm power surges for full-range riding enjoyment. Tailored for active sporty riders, the six-speed transmission has tighter 1st through 5th gear ratios, while keeping highway cruises comfortable with a tall top gear. Rider comfort was a priority in the update of the V-Strom 650 and it features an all-new three-way heightadjustable windscreen, which efficiently reduces wind noise and rider fatigue, carefully shaped from extensive wind tunnel testing. With an improved riding position for comfort, the V-Strom 650 features a well-shaped functional seat, a slim 20 litre fuel tank and compactly tucked-in frame covers to make the rider feel at one with the machine. The V-Strom 650’s renowned sporty good looks continue in the 2012 model, with the aerodynamic and slim styling featuring a vivid combination of distinctive painted sections, contrasting
dramatically against the black resin components. Its user-friendly chassis, built around a lightweight and rigid twin-spar aluminium-alloy frame and swingarm, delivers a comfortable performance package for enjoyable adventure touring rides. An upright riding position, longstroke front and rear suspension and lightweight aluminium-alloy wheels with specifically designed tyres complete the suspension package. The V-Strom 650’s Antilock Braking System ensures ultimate traction on the road, with the brakes monitoring input and wheel speed, matching stopping power to available traction. Allowing riders to track their progress easily, the V-Strom 650’s easy-to-read multi-function instrument cluster combines an analogue tachometer with a large brightness adjustable LCD, with readouts including
gear position, ambient temperature and average fuel consumption, in addition to speed, odometer, dual trip meter and more. New for 2012, the instrument cluster now features a LED indicator warning about road freeze, which together with the ambient temperature display, aids a rider’s awareness of road conditions. Completing this impressive package is the new transponder-type Suzuki Advanced Immobiliser System (SAIS) which helps prevent theft with an electronic code identification system built into the owner’s key. Available now for a recommended price of $10,890*, the 2012 Suzuki V-Strom 650 comes in a choice of two colour schemes, Pearl Mirage White or Metallic Fox Orange, and is backed by Suzuki’s two-year, unlimited kilometre warranty. n * Recommended price excludes dealer delivery and government charges.

aking its global debut as the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Holden’s latest rugged SUV offering has broken cover at the Dubai International Motor Show and will arrive in Australia as the all-new Holden Colorado 7 making it the first heavyduty off-roader SUV to wear a Holden badge in almost a decade. Due in Australia in the first quarter of 2013, the Colorado 7 will bear a close resemblance to the imposing show car when it enters production next year. The Trailblazer has been developed alongside the new-generation Colorado – recently previewed at the Melbourne

The Trailblazer’s chassis is tuned for the dual requirements of heavy-duty off-road performance and ride comfort in urban and city driving, while its body-on-frame construction makes it an ideal vehicle for towing. With accommodation for up to seven passengers and genuine third-row seating, Trailblazer is powered by a new-generation 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine, with a variablegeometry turbocharger for the optimal combination of performance and fuel economy. Trailblazer’s muscular styling and bold design presence were crafted in GM’s South
American Design Centre in São Caetano do Sul, Brazil. Its “body in-wheels out” design ensures excellent approach and departure angles, while design cues including the bonnet power dome, raised cowl and higher-mounted dual projector headlamps give the Trailblazer a strong, purposeful appearance. Polished aluminium exterior highlights and tri-coat pearlescent white paint add to the show car’s luxury exterior finish. Inside, the Trailblazer has an intuitive and flexible seating configuration, premium interior appointments such as digital climate control system and USB and Bluetooth connectivity. n

The Value of Traineeships
C
ompanies within the resources sector are taking advantage of the benefits of enrolling new and existing workers into government-funded traineeships. Richards Mining Services (RMS) has a proud history of supporting such traineeship solutions on behalf of clients such as Nifty Copper, Norseman Gold, BHP Billiton and Downer Edi Mining. There are many benefits associated with implementing a traineeship program including improved employee retention, increased moral and the assurance that employees are trained to national competencies and best practice. Federal and state government incentives are available for traineeships including payroll tax exemptions for enrolled employees for the duration of the traineeship. RMS’s Registered Training Organisation (RTO) team consists of traineeship and funding specialists, experienced trainers, technical writers, project managers and dedicated support staff to ensure that all programs are designed, implemented and managed flawlessly from beginning to end. Reliability Success
hen it comes to Physical Asset Management in the mining industry, Daryl Mather, Director at boutique consulting firm Reliability Success, is your man. “I’ve trained nearly 5000 people in reliability technique,” Daryl said. “I’ve written three books, lead some of the largest reliability implantations in the world and been an expert advisor to governments and institutions in Europe and Latin America.” That’s certainly quite a track record, but Daryl says he’s not the only one with a good reputation. “Reliability Success has a track record of achievement, it’s all about getting results,” Daryl said. “It’s not about sitting in a classroom with boxes and arrows and that sort of thing, it’s about what’s going to make a big difference quickly and how to make that happen.” Offering mobile, underground and fixed plant installation as well as training and services, Reliability Success is a relatively young company created in 2009, but has firmly established itself with a great track record in the mining industry. “The key is that we focus on a few niche areas and don’t try to be everything for everybody,” Daryl said. When it comes to training and services, Reliability Success covers three main areas: reliability centred management or asset strategies; planning and productivity which is around work force management; and whole of life asset management. Getting Your Finance Right as Your Company Grows
T
he use of specialist finance brokers is becoming an increasing trend as banks are tending to leave the client servicing and associated paperwork to business finance specialists. Business finance brokers can source funds from a wide range of financial institutions Australia-wide which have a greater understanding of small to medium sized businesses. Competent brokers should develop long term, in-depth relationships with their clients, often spanning 10 to 20 years. This allows brokers to prepare each finance application and present their clients in the best light to prospective lenders. Contrast this with the revolving doors of bank account managers who may only meet the client two or three times before disappearing, only to be followed by another in quick succession. Brokers should be able to present a concise financial and operational summary of their client’s business, along with the reasons why they are seeking the additional finance. Finance brokers should save business operators time, freeing them up to do what they do best – running their businesses. Finally, competent brokers should perform the role of a long term associate/mentor in the finance area helping business owners as they grow. For more information on getting finance right as your company grows and the role of a finance broker, contact Richard Harper of the Finlease Group on 08 9472 3133, email rharper@finlease.com.au or visit ww.finlease.com.au. n

Pumps Australia
P
umps Australia Pty Ltd have been a long established business in Western Australia designing and manufacturing pumping systems, high pressure water and diesel transfer pumping systems. Through their extensive experience and customer requirements, they have developed a range of high quality off road trailer units which endure the heaviest off road conditions for mining and drilling contractors. These trailers are designed to operate as high pressure water cleaning units or with firefighting pump sets fitted as a combo unit. The frames are galvanized and all cabling is wired and in steel tubing for protection. Additionally, they feature LED lights as well as over ride hydraulic safety breaking. The high pressure pumps and fire fighting pumps are also protected by filtration and low level shut down systems. In addition to this, Pumps Australia has developed high pressure hot water units for cleaning the most difficult of jobs for excavators, drill rig masts, dozers and mining equipment. n

Don’t have time for Christmas shopping? When virtual flowers just won’t cut it…give a real gift online with Gifterati!
A
re the days getting closer and closer to Christmas only sending your stress levels higher and higher, as you just don’t have time for the Christmas shopping? Why not save yourself the stress and hassle and turn to online shopping. Gifterati is a gifting website, with a twist – it is 100 per cent compatible with social media and allows people to post gifts to their friends’ Facebook walls, which they then receive in their ‘real-life’ mailbox shortly afterwards. Operating throughout Australia with a huge variety of gifts available from chocolates, wine, flowers, jewellery and fruit to donations, adventures and magazine subscriptions, Gifterati was founded by Jessica Parzakonis who grew tired of seeing her Facebook friends swap virtual gifts. “Virtual flowers and chocolates are fine, but why not show friends and family you really care by sending the real thing?” says Jessica. Given that there are now 10.6 million Australians on Facebook (that’s almost half the population!) and online shopping is set to increase exponentially over the next five years, Jessica knew that the web was a significant resource. “All of my friends and family are on Facebook so it just made sense to incorporate social media into the idea,” says Jessica. Life BY MIA LACY
I
n the few days after you go, when there are still some of your dirty clothes in the washing basket, I feel your lingering presence. It’s the personal evidence that you inhabit this space, this home, with me. Yes, there other things around me, your office at home, your mail that I take out of the box and keep for you in a folder marked Tony’s mail. It mounts up during 28 days. But, it’s those unwashed clothes of yours that make a statement to me before I sweep them up and put a load on. The shirt you wore the day before I took you to the airport. In it goes… I slip into the away rhythm well now. It’s not like we don’t have communication. As you say, it’s much better now than it was 10 or 20 years ago when you started working away. Today we have mobile phones, emails, video calls, text messages, e-cards. You are so good at connecting with me and we easily stay mentally close. We can see, speak… but we just can’t touch. We discuss our daily routines; you have total recall of the minutiae of my life which always touches me. You always ask me what I’m having for dinner. We talk about your next swing home…all the things that need to be achieved, and all the things we want to do. The flip side, the other side of this interesting coin (and don’t we appreciate the security of the money you earn!), is the 28 days you’re here, with me in every way. We bike to the swimming pool in the early mornings to do our laps together. We go
“Today we have mobile phones, emails, video calls, text messages, e-cards. You are so good at connecting with me and we easily stay mentally close. We can see, speak… but we just can’t touch.” away on mid-week mini breaks. We slide easily back into blissful domesticity and I tease you because I can and it’s better face to face anyway. We entertain our friends at our home, cramming in the companionship, making up for missed birthdays or unshared holidays. There are the peculiarities of this life, discoveries I’ve made. The fact we are in different time zones is an adjustment. Even two hours makes a difference. Our daily biorhythms are just that little out of sync. I’ve finished work, had dinner and you are just closing out your day, still engaged in it when I chat to you on MSN. I remember discovering the wives’ waiting room near the airport – the lay by where we park, read, and check ourselves in the mirror when your text comes in that you’re through and waiting for us to
sweep you up at the taxi rank. There was a bloke parked in the wives’ room there the other day. At work, there’s no discrimination. Of any kind, you say. People ask me how I manage your absences and I say its fine. My four legged alpha male steps up to the mark in your absence. He’s more attentive, more protective, I swear. My friends and family are so considerate. Naturally inclusive, they become even more so when you are away at work. The first two weeks go quickly, sliding past easily as I busy myself with work and plunge into the pool to stroke the laps alone. The third week, past the half way mark, is cause for subtle celebration. Then suddenly, we’re in single figures, as you put it. With 48 hours to go, the anticipation kicks in like adrenalin. Without needing to, I get up at dawn to wash the car. I love that time. You know it too; it transmutes itself to you. You said that I would have twin lives. No, they are more parallel ones. We are together apart. n

SAFETY BRIEFING Please listen carefully to the Safety Briefing and take the time to read through the Safety On Board Card prior to takeoff. This will help you familiarise yourself with the emergency exits, brace position and the location of your life jacket. DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT) It has been reported that some airline passengers have developed clots in deep blood vessels, often in the lower legs, as a result of sitting for an extended period without exercise or movement. This condition is known medically as Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. If blood clot fragments break off and lodge in other areas of the body such as the lungs, they may cause a possible fatal pulmonary thrombosis when a person starts walking after being immobile for a long time. The risk factors for DVT include varicose veins, recent surgery or injury in the lower legs, malignant diseases, past history of DVT, obesity, pregnancy and recent childbirth. Anyone with these risk factors is advised to consult a doctor prior to flying to find out how to minimise the risk of DVT. During the flight, we recommend passengers take the following precautions: • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and minimise intake of alcohol. • Exercise onboard the aircraft by moving and stretching your toes, rotating your ankles, raising and lowering each leg and massaging your calves gently. In addition, we suggest that you avoid crossing your legs. SEATBELTS Seatbelts must be firmly fastened for take-off, landing and whilst the seatbelt sign is illuminated. We do recommend that your seatbelt be fastened at all times whilst seated in case of unexpected turbulence. TRAY TABLES/SEAT BACKS Please ensure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the upright position for take-off and landing. SMOKING Government regulations strictly prohibit smoking on all domestic flights. Special smoke detectors have been fitted to the toilet on board the aircraft. Smoking is also prohibited on the tarmac and throughout the terminal buildings. CARRY ON LUGGAGE If you have carry on luggage please stow it in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Hand luggage not correctly stowed may cause injury in the event of unexpected turbulence. ELECTRONIC DEVICES Hazards exist to aircraft systems by Electro-Magnetic Interference from Portable Electronic Devices. The interference can cause aircraft systems to malfunction. To provide adequate protection for the aircraft please note that: mobile phones are not to be used at any time on board the aircraft. Other devices such as compact disc players, portable palm top and lap top computers, cassette players, personal electronic organisers or personal video games may be used during cruise only, NOT when the aircraft is taking off and landing.

TALK BACK WITH OCCUPATION: Folks seem to like the cartoons I’ve been in. Oh, and lots of folks know about my club. I bet a lot of little kids know about my clubhouse too. WHAT DO YOU NEVER TRAVEL WITHOUT: If ya ask me, it sure is hard to beat a pair of red shorts, they are a must when we pack to travel! And my music. I like all sorts of music! If it can get me dancin’, great! If it can get a crowd dancing, that’s even better! Of course I never travel without Minnie and my friends Goofy, Donald, Daisy and the rest! FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION: We love travelling all over the world, meeting children and making them smile

Mickey Mouse and dance and sing. Australia is one of our favourites. Australian kids sing real loud! WHAT’S THE WILDEST THING THAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU AND THE DISNEY CREW? Well, between Donald’s practical jokes and Goofy almost blowin’ things up all the time, I’d have to say, “this week.” (ha-ha). WHAT’S COMING UP FOR YOU NEXT? “Rock and roll!” (ha-ha). We’re touring Australia these summer holidays (from 28th December 2011 to 6th February 2012) with Disney Live! Mickey’s Music Festival. I can hardly wait to see all my friends from down-under, real soon. I heard that kids who are into music are really good at learning all kinds of stuff, like math and science and
art. Not to mention, it’s a great way to get to know other people. But maybe the most important thing to me is how much fun music can be!
