Welcome Aboard

W

elcome aboard your flight today with Skippers. With the summer season upon us, it means scorching temperatures at some of our destinations, not to mention the cyclone activity that affects a lot of our operations, but in any case our dedicated crews will do their very best to make the trip as comfortable as possible. We again remind all passengers that you should always ensure that you keep up your fluid levels with water prior to boarding the aircraft to prevent dehydration before and during the flight - particularly in heat wave conditions. Our dedicated crews are all simulated trained and although not mandated by CASA, Skippers has elected to train all crew in this manner in the interest of safety. A new roundabout at the corner of Bungana Ave and Fauntleroy Ave has been completed and has alleviated a lot of the traffic congestion previously experienced in this area coming to and from the General Aviation terminals. Skippers is pleased to announce that they have taken over the Kimberley Air Service routes servicing Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek from the 23rd January 2012. Services are provided on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays and can be extended should demand increase. These services are provided by a Conquest turbo prop pressurized aircraft which departs from the Broome International Airport. Skippers’ package holidays through Discover West Holidays have been well received incorporating all our destinations as well as those people coming to the city for work or pleasure. Skippers continue to support the communities with sponsorship deals involving various activities at the destinations we service as well as enabling editorials to be included in Inflight Magazine. We once again remind you that we have wireless internet that is available to our passengers in the Perth terminal, which is free of charge. Please enquire upon checking in. It is encouraging that there is a lot of activity over our network by emerging resource companies, new and old, riding on the back of the current resource boom. Once again, enjoy your journey with us today. We feel privileged to provide this service and look forward to you flying with us again soon.

BE MOTIVATED BY MICHELLE BY BETTINA MANIATIS

I

t’s the beginning of the year, and statistically weight loss is at the top of the list for New Years resolutions throughout Australia. So, with this year’s Biggest Loser looking like the best season yet, I took some time out with one of the show’s inspirational Personal Trainers, Michelle Bridges and I can tell you, this girl is seriously passionate about fitness. B: Michelle, a lot of our readership is within the mining and resources industry, and their lifestyle can be very different to those who work the average 9 to 5 job - so for those wanting to lose weight in this scenario, but with no idea where to begin, where might they start? M: So much of it is about getting organised –having a plan and getting into a routine given the fact that the mining community work in shift work. That’s not all that easy I know, but just thinking ahead and planning week to week, even month to month if it’s at all possible so they can really work around it and start thinking about their nutrition and their training. Get a plan, get a diary. Really go and really try and map out time to get on with your training and with your shopping. So for example if you are in the mines, with regards to meals, set it up so you have healthy nutritional food available to you and you can do a cook up on the weekend, or when you’re at home and you can put that in the freezer and you can very easily defrost it in the microwave and maybe add a bag of salad or steamed vegetables or something. It’s about having that organisation. So I really recommend having that plan. Also, I really recommend training before or after work, because you know once you go back to your room, it’s really difficult to get back out again. Either on your way to work or straight after work. And try and make it a regular time slot to make it a part of your life.

B: OK, now for me personally, and for a lot of our readers, motivation might be an issue… M: Motivation’s a funny thing. I think motivation is like a bad boyfriend – it’s never there when you need it. So many people tend to hang their hats on motivation and use that as an excuse. So when you ask why they’re not eating healthy or exercising, you just get: “oh, I’m just not motivated.” I know as a human being, and as a personal trainer, you’re not always going to be motivated. I don’t wake up at 5 in the morning and go: “wooo bring on that 10K run! Yeahhh.” You know, I just don’t. Some mornings I have a bit of a spring in my step, but some mornings I’m just “urghhhh.” So I just get into robot mode; get my shoes on and get out the door and don’t let my head start thinking because then it’ll be like “oh maybe I’ll just train this afternoon,” or “oh it’s just one session.” So yes, I think motivation can be a bit of an excuse. That said, you can be motivated by setting yourself goals. You might want to get fit for a fun run or you might want to fit into a pair of pants – there’s your goal right there. Set yourself up for little mini goals to get yourself to your major goals. If you want motivation though, why wait until you’re being told you are a diabetic and you have to take this medication for the rest of your life? Why wait until you have a heart attack and you’re in hospital? Why wait until the choice is removed from you when you have the choice in your hands right now? What about the people who have children? Have you considered the fact that you might not be around to see your child get married? Take a look around – you don’t see very many old obese or heavily overweight people. If you’re obese, you’re lucky to make it to over 50.

Personally - I’m motivated by that! B: So for those who are quite active, can you tell me how they know if they're being active enough? Are there some tell-tale signs that you're doing a good 'work out'? M: Well one of the biggest tell tale signs over and above in terms of intensity, I think, the most critical element is consistency. I think if you’re doing something every day, more power to you and congratulations. If you’re doing something every day, 30 to 40 to 60 minutes a day, preferably, then you are absolutely on the right wicket. With regards to actual intensity, there are a few ways you can monitor that. I love using my heart rate monitor and watching my heart rate go up and down and I use it as bit of a game during my workout – so spiking my heart rate and bringing it back down again. Or you know, I’ll tell myself I need to burn 500 or 600 calories during my workout before I can finish – my heart rate monitor tells me that. Another way without even having to use technology is if you can say your name and address easily, then you’re not working hard enough. If you can barely get your phone number out, or not even, then you know you’re working at a good intensity. If you are a regular exerciser, I totally recommend getting a heart rate monitor though. But the most important this is consistency consistency consistency. B: Now the new season of Biggest Loser is underway - tell us how you feel about the contestants this year and how they compare to some of the contestants we've seen in the past? M: They’re doing fabulously. We have some contestants that hit the ground running and they want it want it want it and then we have others who fight the system, think it’s what

they want to do and then they get in there and and think “urghhhh it’s all too hard.”

really stuck out for you, or even if you have one favourite memory so far?

And of course that’s the beauty of watching the show is you see all these different personalities, on the same journey. Ultimately they all lose weight. There’s no way they can’t. We feed them healthy food, we move their bodies and they drop the weight really easily. And you see every individual journey. In comparison to other years gone by, they’re doing really well. I’m really loving this season – I think it’s probably one of our better ones.

M: I’ve had so many memories and moments and exhilarating times and humbling experiences, to try and think of one would be tough. But I do have to say that doing the marathon two or three years ago, that was extraordinary. I’ve done a marathon. I know how hard they are. Admittedly, I ran mine and they walked – but ultimately they did it. They did 42.2km. And you know, if they can do a marathon, any body can do a marathon.

B: You’ve been doing Biggest Loser for a number of years now and there are some pretty inspirational stories. Can you tell us some moments that have

10

Issue 20

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

B: One of the things I've always wondered is how some of the people on the show start out so large - How do they get to that point? And what could some of the warning signs be as

to whether you’re on that path? M: I think when I talk to people, a lot of them bury their head in the sand. They just don’t want to know about it. It’s all too hard. A lot of them say they didn’t realise how big they had gotten until they look back. And for some of them, it’s because their doctors have told them they have got to do something about their weight. For others, it’s just the clothes just keep getting bigger, the messages just keep getting louder, they can’t find anywhere to sit down in a restaurant, they can’t find a seat on the plane - it’s just constant messages. The belt buckles just keep going up up up up. Or in the case of this season, because they’re singles, they realise they’re just watching their life go by, and it’s because their weight is holding them back.

From Sophie Mackay

Something Old Something New Experience the stunning city views from our newly refurbished restaurant

What’s a regular day for you? How many hours of cardio and training so do you do every day? I do generally one to two hours of training a day. I’ll usually have one day off a week, sometimes two depending on my schedule in that if I end up having two days off during the week, I’ll try and make up for it by doing bigger sessions. I always train on the weekends because that’s when I can find the time. It’s during the week I can sometimes find I’m too busy. I mix it up with cardio, boxing and weights. And I also have a personal trainer believe it or not - he’s a friend of mine We’ve been training for about four months and I really enjoy that. For breakfast, I might have an egg white omelette, or a yoghurt, or half a cup of muesli. Lunch would be some sort of a protein salad or even a stir fry. And then dinner would be something similar. There are lots of green leafy vegetables in my diet. With snacks, I can take them or leave them. If I’ve fed myself adequately through the day, I find I don’t need them. If I do, I always have cut up celery and carrots in a container in my fridge so I’ll hook into them while I’m working away on my computer at home. So it’s pretty simple and pretty clean. And I know if I gain weight, it might be because I’ve had a few wines on the weekend or maybe indulged a bit too much so if I put on a kilo, I’m like “right, back on the program.”

From Sarah Jones Do you have splurge days and what do you eat? I don’t have whole days. There will certainly be times where I’ll have whatever I want when we go out for dinner for example, but I set myself up for it. So for example, usually on a Saturday night I’ll go out to dinner with my husband so in the morning I’ll do a massive two hour session and burn off 1000 calories. I’ll eat lightly throughout the day and then at night when I go for the dinner, I’ll have the entrée and the main, I’ll have bread, I may or may not have dessert or whatever - certainly have a couple of wines and I’ll feel completely fine about it.

From Haroun Nathaniel What is the best time to exercise? AM or PM? Doesn’t matter. Anytime is good time. Whatever fits into your schedule. I personally prefer to get the monkey off the back and get it done in the morning and then it’s over and done with. Whereas with training in the afternoon, it’s always in my mind. “I’ve got to train I’ve got to train I’ve got to train.” And that can become quite tiresome. So in the morning, I get it done and then for the rest of the day I’m free as a bird. My training’s done and I don’t have to worry about it.

From Lisa Klekner What are you favourite snacks that are less than 100 calories? The carrot sticks or the celery sticks. Low fat yoghurt. I would definitely have protein shakes. I have my own protein shake called Figure by Natures Way and I use that quite a lot for snacks because it’s really easy and convenient and it’s got a good protein content. n

et’s face it: there are times when we all feel undervalued and underappreciated. Life is busy - work, kids, bills, the list goes on. And at the bottom of the ladder is your relationship – but it doesn’t have to be this way. It’s not rocket science, but here are a couple of top notch tips to brighten your partner’s day when you get home – after all, everyone needs a gentle reminder every now and then.

1. Be Productive Folding the washing (even if you do it badly); stacking the dishwasher; or getting up off the sofa first when one of the kids screams from their bed is an incredible turn on. If we don't have to use the last of our energy doing any of these tasks, you are far more likely to be in with a chance of some nooky later on.

2. Be Thoughtful Next time you go to the video store, get two DVDs: one you know she’ll love (yes even if it’s a romantic comedy) and also that jam-packed action thriller that you're keen to see. Start watching early, right from when the kids go to bed so you can watch hers first but still have enough time to see Van Dam pulp the bad guys. If you really want to earn some points, bring home a couple of Magnums as well.

3. Make the Effort Make the effort to do something special. Ring the baby sitter or mother-in-law to look after the kids, book the restaurant, and maybe even get a hair cut. For girls, it’s all about the fact that you have been thinking ahead to plan something special.

4. Cook up a Storm

5. Dress up Dress nicely for one. We know the trackies, flannies and stubbies are comfy, but you like her in the LBD (little black dress) so how about you put on the ensemble to turn her head. Simple but effective.

6. Be Nice Be nice about her parents. Ask the outlaws over. Yes, yes, it can be hard - but showing sensitivity in tough familial situations can be a massive point-scorer.

7. Give a Gift And we don't mean to harp, but flowers are ALWAYS a winner! n

Take this relationship quiz to see how much you need to work on the 7 tips! The last time you had dinner alone with your partner was: a) in a restaurant b) in front of the television c) in 2003 The majority of your conversations are: a) over a glass of chilled white wine b) over the heads of

screaming children c) via text message In the privacy of your marital bedroom you: a) have sex b) have rows c) have his and hers TV remote controls You last shared an intimate moment (with your partner): a) last night b) last anniversary c) last time you really wanted something

A

fresher than usual pre Christmas period was not foreseen but has proved an ideal lead up to the warm to hot conditions during the day with cool to warm nights that have been the norm for Margaret River since mid January and put simply, the vines are loving it. Fortunately to date Margaret River has missed the inclement weather as it has travelled further inland both north and east of the GI although longer term forecasts predict wetter than average January and February. Pest and disease pressure is presently low. Marri blossom has started earlier than normal and looks to be very fruitful. The nectar from these trees will keep the birds happy and out of the grapes for a while yet although most vineyards are taking the precautionary steps of starting to install bird netting and getting ready for harvest now. Most vineyards are free from Powdery Mildew and Botrytis at present although some minor losses from Downey Mildew occurred earlier after flowering. Interestingly bunch size has increased this year but berry density provides for

18

Issue 20

looser bunches. This will also be better in evenness of ripening. Overall cropping levels throughout the region appear similar or slightly up on last year, although there have been some reports of lighter crops in Chardonnay (it is still very early days though). Chardonnay is almost through veraison, Sauvignon Blanc stands 20 –30% veraison with Semillon a little behind with and Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz just about to start. Overall berry development is similar to last year but a week or so earlier than average. In Margaret River there is a preference to harvest Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc / Semillon Blanc at lower Baume's and this is also bringing harvest dates forward to what would be seen as more in keeping with “traditional”. Depending on weather conditions, especially heat load from now until vintage, will determine actual harvest dates being earlier or later. The general belief is that Margaret River will be looking at a start date around 13th to the 20th February in the northern half of the region, commencing with Chardonnay; this is a little later than last year,

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

although we did have some very hot weather leading into the 2011 vintage, but a few days earlier than the long term average. Soil moisture has depleted earlier than usual as a result of lower rainfall and also greater evaporation rates over recent weeks with the warm to hot conditions. This combined with the viticultural practice tendency to have more grass growing undervine and mid-row now also results in reducing moisture in the soil. Consequently we see slightly less vigour and improved canopy attributes with more open fruit zone as a result lending itself towards better physiologic ripeness of grapes at possibly lower Baume. Of course grape growing is but a part of farming and much can happen between now and when the final bucket is in the winery. However, weather permitting there is a strong possibility of a very great year for all varieties in 2012 particularly in quality which is what Margaret River’s growing international reputation has been based upon.

Introducing the Ningaloo Coast Australia’s Newest World Heritage Area

T

he Ningaloo Coast’s natural beauty and biological diversity was recently recognised by the World Heritage Committee and named Australia’s 19th World Heritage area. Regarded as one of the last great ocean paradises, Ningaloo is Australia’s largest fringing reef system, stretching 300 kilometres from Red Bluff (located 140 kilometres north of Carnarvon) to Bundegi Reef near Exmouth. Visitors flock from near and far to experience the underwater wonderland of the Ningaloo Marine Park and to explore the rugged beauty of the Cape Range National Park. Growing up to 18 metres long, whale sharks visit the Ningaloo Reef between mid March and July annually following the mass spawning of coral in the Marine Park. Ningaloo is considered one of the most reliable and easily accessible places on earth to swim with these majestic gentle giants. Tours depart from Coral Bay and Exmouth allowing visitors to experience the incredible thrill of swimming with the largest fish in the sea. As the whale sharks begin to leave Ningaloo, humpback whales start to make an appearance. Humpback whales are considered the most acrobatic of the species and can be seen in the Ningaloo Marine Park between June and November each year. View them at locations along Ningaloo Reef, at the coastal cliffs of Red

Bluff and Gnaraloo Bay in the south of the Marine Park and from vantage points further north in Coral Bay and Exmouth. In Exmouth, watch them from the Vlamingh Head Lighthouse, Town Beach and Bundegi Beach. Whale watching tours are offered from Exmouth and Coral Bay. Even when whale sharks and humpback

whales have continued on their respective migrations, there’s always plenty of marine life to be seen around the Ningaloo Reef, from enormous manta rays and endangered marine turtles to schools of tropical fish and colourful coral. In fact, Ningaloo is home to around 250 species of coral and 500 species of fish. As the reef is located just a few metres from the shore, in some places it is easily accessible for snorkellers. Charter operators in Coral Bay and Exmouth can take you to their favourite spots on the outer reef. The great news is that Ningaloo’s marine environment is accessible to all. Visitors who are not interested in scuba diving or snorkelling can enjoy this underwater wonderland aboard a glass bottom boat tour. Tours depart from Coral Bay and Exmouth. Sea kayaks are another great way to explore Ningaloo’s sheltered lagoons. They are smooth and quiet, allowing you to get up close to wildlife. Hire kayaks off the beach in Coral Bay or Exmouth or join a tour with a local guide. The Ningaloo Coast also offers some amazing sights on land. Explore the rugged landscapes of the Cape Range National Park on a four wheel drive tour or take a boat cruise up Yardie Creek to spot rare black footed rock wallabies. Swap Your Home? Live like a local for less!

E

ver wanted to pack up your life for the weekend, a week or a month and experience how people live on the other side of the fence? Just as Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet did in the movie “The Holiday”, home exchange website Love Home Swap (www.LoveHomeSwap.com) allows Australians to swap their lifestyle for someone else’s while saving themselves thousands of dollars. Home swapping offers the perfect way to escape the daily grind and experience your destination like a local without the need to fork out hundreds or even thousands on accommodation. Listing your home on Love Home Swap is the perfect way to make your home “work for you” and gives home owners and even renters the opportunity to holiday more for a whole lot less. Founder of Love Home Swap, Debbie Wosskow points out that home swapping is not just restricted to home owners. “Most people think that you must own your own home in order to swap, however people who rent are also able to take part in home

exchanges,” she said. “Many landlords prefer their property to be occupied as opposed to empty while tenants travel.” Whether you want to relax by an open fire in the Blue Mountains, sip wine overlooking the Margaret River, stay at a working farm on the NSW North Coast or head overseas to experience the sunshine of the Maldives during Australia’s winter months, Love Home Swap has thousands of properties listed in more than 70 countries. What’s more you’ll be experiencing each destination like a local. “The beauty of home swapping is that it enables you to experience your destination in ways you cannot if staying in a hotel,” Debbie added. “Submersing yourself in the local way of life allows you to experience

Margaret River, Western Australia

the way others live offering a refreshing lifestyle change.” For more information, or to book your next home swap vacation, visit www.LoveHomeSwap.com n

WAYS TO PAY DOWN YOUR MORTGAGE QUICKER BY ALEX WILSON OF SAVINGSGUIDE.COM.AU

I

n the interest of keeping it brief, here are some quick top 5 ways of reducing your mortgage quicker. I don’t know about you, but the idea of having my mortgage for the full 30 years doesn’t really excite me. Join me in finding a way to pay that sucker off, quick fast

I personally would never redraw unless it

1. SET YOUR REPAYMENTS HIGHER, ALWAYS

your mortgage.

So your mortgage is $1000 every fortnight? Call your lender and request that they take $1200 if you can afford it. It will slowly add up, reduce the interest payable and slash your mortgage by many years. It also creates a really nice safety net incase rates rise and you struggle to meet your repayments (it’s called having a buffer).

2. ENSURE YOU USE A MORTGAGE OFFSET ACCOUNT This won’t save you thousands a year, though it will save you hundreds. A mortgage offset account is simply an account that is attached to your mortgage, meaning whatever dollar value sits in the account, your home loan is reduced by that amount. So instead of having your excess pay sitting in your everyday account each month, it technically sits on your mortgage, reducing the amount of interest you pay.

was something life threatening. You will be forever in a cycle of debt if you continue to redraw your useable funds from your mortgage. Instead try budgeting your money more effectively to ensure you never have the need to scrape cash off

5. REFINANCE EVERY COUPLE OF YEARS Rates change. The industry changes. Home

3. MAKE LUMP REPAYMENTS OR MINI LUMP SUM REPAYMENTS By taking a wad of cash, no matter how small or large and depositing it into your mortgage – you will save yourself thousands of dollars in interest over the long term. We have spoken about lump sum repayments previously, though if you struggle to find a spare $1000 to $5000 to deposit onto your mortgage, why not occasionally drop $100 or $200 into the account? It will all add up over the long run.

loan rates occasionally get a boost far and beyond your current interest rates and fees. This means that shopping around is always your biggest friend. Keep a close eye on the market so that when you are ready and eligible (without getting stung for exit fees) you can pounce on a better deal. It may shave years off your mortgage and save you lots of interest.

BONUS MORTGAGE TIP Ensure you pay your mortgage weekly or fortnightly, never opt for monthly. This will

4. NEVER EVER EVER REDRAW MONEY OFF YOUR MORTGAGE

save you more interest as there are only 12

It may be tempting to draw back some of that hard earned mortgage money, though remember it will bite you in the long run.

per year or 26 fortnights per year. The

months in a year, compared to 52 weeks more frequently you pay, the less interest you will attract.

PROTEIN POWDERS W BY BRAD SHEPPARD OF PEAK PHYSIQUE PERSONAL TRAINING

26

Issue 20

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

ith so much conflicting information about eating programs these days, it’s no wonder that people are turning their interests to supplementation as an adequate source of nutrition. Regardless of the nutritional strategy you employ, there will be some “expert”, or feature on TV that has you questioning exactly what to do. Supplementation has been hot on the lips of people after the Pan Pharmaceuticals indecent. Quite frankly of all the supplements that I have sampled and protein powders consumed, I have yet to find one to make me hallucinate. In addition to this you will find many nutritionists that will suggest that supplementation is completely unnecessary, and there may well be some truth to their argument. At the end of the day, you can satisfy your daily protein requirements with “real foods”, but sometimes it just too hard to prepare that chicken breast in between meetings. Consuming a shake on the other hand is virtually no problem at all. I found myself laughing at a supplement advertisement in a U.S.A. bodybuilding magazine where the caption read; “you may never eat real food again!” What’s more, some of those protein supplement shakes taste so damn good, with flavours like café-moccachinno and caramel honeycomb, you just can’t go wrong! So with this in mind, there may be some truth to the supplement company’s motto!

The Facts • Whilst engaged in regular activity, you need somewhere in the vicinity of 2g of protein per kg of lean bodyweight per day (this may increase as you activity does). This is best divided up over 5-6 smaller meals to help absorption. • Eating your protein with your carbohydrates lowers the GI, therefore prolonging the duration of satisfaction (you get less hungry). • Excess protein (like any nutrient in excess) will make you fat. • Most people I assess do not meet their minimum protein requirements. • Protein shakes provide an easy way to supply your protein in a tasty and easy format. • Protein shakes are not only for bodybuilders or those looking to build muscle. What to look for in Protein Powders Protein powders from different supplement companies will be often promoted for their benefits. For example, WPi (Whey protein isolate) is generally recommended as the most superior source of protein at over 90% protein and minimal carbohydrates and fat. This type of protein is particularly useful as a high source of protein and is suitable for individuals on most eating programs. WPC (Whey protein concentrate) is highly regarded as a useful source of protein as it is

a blend of protein sources and theoretically provides a “timed release” of amino acids into the system. Generally speaking, WPC will be approximately 80% protein and is suitable for those on low carbohydrate and low fat eating regimes also. MRP style (meal replacement) style powders have gained popularity as the blend of protein and carbohydrates provides adequate delivery of these nutrients in a controlled dosage and will generally be a combination of 50%-60% protein and 40 – 50% carbohydrates. The majorities of products are low in fat and utilize low GI (Glycaemic Index) carbohydrates. Which one is right for me? For the majority of my clients, they find satisfaction in WPC protein powders, as they are able to have good quality protein with low carbohydrates and fat that not only tastes good, but is a little more cost effective. As we increase the commitment to achieve bigger goals, then we sometime switch to WPi protein powders as they are the superior product. New Features MAKE EPICA

The Smart Choice G

M Holden’s value-packed mid-size Epica sedan just got even better with the introduction of a new fuel efficient fourcylinder diesel engine plus six-speed automatic transmission with Active Select, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and six airbags standard across the range. Epica’s new four-cylinder 2.0 litre turbo diesel variant is the latest addition to Holden’s growing diesel range and it delivers great performance and impressive fuel economy of a low 7.6 litres per 100km*. The new diesel model gets a 6T40 six-speed automatic transmission with Active Select as standard. The 2.5 litre petrol model is also upgraded to six-speed, making 2008 Epica one of the first six-speed automatics in the mid-size car segment and assuring customers of an even more refined drive. The introduction of significant features such as ESC and six airbags as standard on all models complements an already comprehensive safety specification which includes ABS, Traction Control and Electronic Brake Force Distribution. Epica also receives fresh new styling including a new front grille, rear fascia and alloy wheels, giving it a sharper, more dynamic road presence and style. The two highly specified models, CDX and CDXi, offer outstanding features at very competitive price points. For petrol-powered

variants, pricing remains unchanged despite additional features. GM Holden Marketing Director, Philip Brook, said these features gave Epica a real point of difference in the marketplace. “The mid-size segment is highly competitive but the Epica range represents fantastic value for money, outstanding safety features, more luxury and now a four-cylinder turbo diesel engine that delivers effortless performance and outstanding fuel economy,” Brook said. “These great additions, combined with generous interior space and stylish design, reinforce Epica as the smart choice for any consumer in this market. “There’s no doubt that when coupled with our sharp pricing strategy, the new Epica ticks all the right boxes. This is a car that demands attention.” n *ADR081/01, figures based on auto transmission

SUZUKI REVEALS 2012 GSX-R1000

T

he hotly anticipated 2012 model of the championship-winning Suzuki GSX-R1000 has been unveiled, featuring class-mastering performance, cutting-edge technology, design and engineering. Significantly lighter than its predecessors, the sixth generation GSX-R1000 is the ultimate fusion of performance and design and delivers more mid-range power and acceleration. Suzuki’s flagship sportsbike, the GSX-R1000 is an unsurpassed package, powered by a 999cc, four-cylinder, liquidcooled, DOHC engine delivering 136kW of power and featuring Suzuki’s Dual Throttle Valve (SDTV) fuel-injection system and a phenomenal power-to-weight ratio. In the 2012 model, Suzuki engineers have made significant improvements across the machine, including 11 per cent lighter and stronger pistons, revised crankcases with newly designed ventilation holes, a modified exhaust camshaft profile and increased engine compression ratio. The GSX-R1000 now features a four into one exhaust system and a newly designed titanium muffler, dramatically improving the machine’s agility and handling as a result of its lighter weight. Delivering even more advanced stopping power, the GSX-R1000 now uses dual Brembo monoblock calipers and new disc rotors, both of which are significantly lighter than the previous front brake package. The class-defining GSX-R1000 is packed with race-bred technology, including Suzuki’s

original Drive Mode Selector (S-DMS) which offers a selection of three performance settings to suit riding conditions and a slipper clutch. With a twin-spar cradle frame, made from just five cast aluminium-alloy sections, and the revised Showa Big Piston Forks (BPF) with a 5mm shorter stroke and softer suspension setting to accommodate the lighter weight, the GSX-R1000 offers supreme handling at racetrack speeds. New for 2012 is the high-grip seat cover for the rider and pillion to increase rider stability under acceleration or deceleration, combining with the adjustable footrests for a smooth ride. Completing an impressive package, the GSX-R1000 instrument cluster includes a lap time counter, adjustable shift light and gear position indicator, as well as speedometer, odometer, dual trip meters and LED indicators.

The GSX-R1000’s striking good looks are highlighted by the new pin stripes on the wheels and updated GSX-R graphics adorning the new colour schemes. The GSX-R1000 has an impressive racing pedigree and since its introduction over a decade ago, has won multiple championships, including four Australian Superbike Championships. Available in Australia early now, the 2012 Suzuki GSX-R1000 comes in a choice of two colour schemes, Metallic Triton Blue / Glass Splash White or Metallic Matt Black / Glass Sparkle Black and is backed by Suzuki’s two-year, unlimited kilometre warranty. 2012 ULTRA 300X The Fastest Jet Ski on the Planet

A

s an innovator of the personal watercraft since the first jet ski, Kawasaki has a long history of

high performance on the water and now, Kawasaki's flagship, the Jet Ski Ultra 300X, pushes the performance envelope even further. With incredible boost from an Eaton Twin Vortices Supercharger, the big Kawasaki Ninja-inspired marine engine pumps out 300 horsepower* through an all new pump for incredible hook-up and acceleration. Not only is the 2012 Ultra 300X high powered, but it's also high-tech. Riders can adjust hull attitude with the electric trim system, there's an electronic throttle valve with electronic cruise control, fuel saving ECO mode and an all digital instrument panel.

Cruising Range Offering more fuel capacity than any machine in its class, the Ultra 300X’s 78-litre fuel tank holds 14 litres more than the JET SKI STX-15F, making long distance cruising even more accessible and inviting. Exhaust The Ultra 300X features a 4-into-2-into-1 powerboat-style exhaust system, which routes the exhaust pipe upwards. This allows the smoothest flow for exhaust gases, maximising exhaust efficiency. Fuel Injected High-flow fuel injectors with 4 orifices are fitted to complement the increased power output and to improve combustion efficiency. A single throttle body is used with a bore diameter of 60 mm.

New Impeller To suit the new 160mm jet pump, the Ultra 300X gets a new impeller redesigned to efficiently convert all the extra power into forward thrust. New Race Bred Hull Design The new hull now features two separate flush ports for the engine and intercooler and offers the industry's best stability responsive handling in calm and rough water. Deep 22.5 degree V-angle at the bottom of the hull provides better "grip" for racing like performance. For more on the 2012 Ultra 300X, visit www.kawasaki.com.au/jet-skis/view-fullrange/2012-ultra-300x n * Measured in PS at the crankshaft under controlled conditions. Actual performance may vary.

Tired of Procrastinating? BY JASON URBANOWICZ, ENTREPRENEUR & AUTHOR OF MONKEY SEE MONKEY DON’T

H

ave you ever found yourself putting off important activities or jobs till tomorrow or the next day? And in the meantime, you load yourself up or get busy with activities that are not important for you to complete or do? Does an approaching deadline mean a crisis for you? Do you keep hesitating when making decisions? Procrastination is putting off until tomorrow the things that you could or should be doing today. Everyone procrastinates sometimes. Yet, what makes a big difference for your success is your ability to recognise procrastination in its different forms, and to promptly take it under control, before this bad habit steals your opportunities, damages your career, or destroys your relationships. Procrastination is a strange phenomenon. Its purpose seems to be to make our life more pleasant, but instead it almost always adds stress, disorganisation and frequently failure. The process has been described by psychologists as the below:

38

Issue 20

You have an objective, usually something you and others value and respect. There may be a deadline, so you say to yourself, “I must start.” You delay, briefly thinking of real and imagined advantages of starting later - "I'll do it tomorrow when I don't have much to do." You delay more, becoming self-critical - "I should have started sooner" - and/or selfexcusing - "I really couldn't have left the party early last night, my best friends were there." You delay still more, until finally the task has to be done, usually hastily - "Just get it done any old way" - or you just don't have time - "I can't do this!" You berate yourself - "There is something wrong with me" - and swear never to procrastinate again and/or you discount the importance of the task - "It doesn't matter." You repeat the process almost immediately on other important tasks, as if it were an addiction or compulsion. The wisest course of action, most of the time,

www.inflightmagazine.com.au

would be to simply do the unpleasant task as soon as practical, while we have enough time to do the job right and get it over with, not prolonging our agony. But we put it off. Why Do We Do It? While the term “procrastination” technically refers to the avoidance of a specific task that needs to be accomplished, this explanation doesn't begin to capture the emotions triggered by the word. For most of us, the word “procrastination" reminds us of past experiences where we felt guilty, lazy, inadequate, anxious, or stupid - or some combination of these. It also implies a value judgment; if you procrastinate, you are bad, and as such, lack worth as a person. Procrastination is quite complex. It involves emotions, skills, thoughts or attitudes, and subconscious reactions to various events. Furthermore, the causes and dynamics of putting off an important but unpleasant task vary from person to person and from task to

“ITS PURPOSE SEEMS TO BE TO MAKE OUR LIFE MORE PLEASANT, BUT INSTEAD IT ALMOST ALWAYS ADDS STRESS, DISORGANISATION AND FREQUENTLY FAILURE.” task for the same person. Just some of the myriad of reasons we might procrastinate include: Lack of Relevance If something is neither relevant nor meaningful to you personally, it may be difficult to get motivated to even begin. Boring The task may be boring. If a project has been imposed or assigned to you and it is not consistent with your own interests, you may be reluctant to spend the necessary time to see it to conclusion. Perfectionism Having unreachable standards will discourage you from pursuing a task. Perfection is unattainable and perfectionists know this, so are often reluctant to start. Evaluation Anxiety Since others responses to your work are not under your direct control, overvaluing these responses can create the kind of anxiety that will interfere with work getting accomplished. Ambiguity If you are uncertain of what is expected of you – your priorities, goals or objectives are unclear – it may be difficult to get started. Fear of the Unknown If you are venturing into a new realm or field, you don't have any way of knowing how well you'll do. Such an uncertain outcome may inhibit your desire to begin. Fear of Failure You may think that if you don't get an 'A', you are failure. Or that if you strive for something and don’t achieve it that you, as a person, are a failure.

Inability to Handle the Task If through lack of training, skill, or ability you feel that you lack the personal resources to do the job, you may avoid it completely. Feeling Overwhelmed The task is so momentous that it seems impossible to achieve. Where to begin? Why even start? Fear and Anxiety You spend so much time worrying about the task rather than completing it.

The Outback Power Pack

A

fter appearing on ABC’s New Inventors and being judged the People’s Choice winner for the Most Popular Invention Award for 2010, we spoke to WA’s Jim Thomson of Outback Energy Supply. Tell us about your invention, the Outback Power Pack. How does it work exactly? It is a containerised solar, small wind and diesel power generation system. It collects energy from the sun and the wind, stores the energy in appropriately sized battery banks, and then via sophisticated electronics, produces seamless 240V or 415 AC electricity in single and 3 phase. With the addition of a diesel genset or mains power, controlled automatically by the electronics, very large loads for starting and infrequent high power draw events can be catered for. It has been designed as a minimal dig, minimal ground disturbance solution. The only digging required is for the cabling to the loads which provides for considerable savings on excavation and concreting costs, especially important in remote areas. The unit, being based on a standard 6 meter recycled shipping container, can also be redeployed readily as operations move across the landscape. This makes it an ideal power source for

to the ABC New Inventors program and in 2010 we appeared on the program which was a tremendous experience. Later that year, we were advised that due to the high level of support from the viewers, the Outback Power Pack had been judged the People’s Choice winner of the Most Popular Invention Award for 2010.

open pit support operations, disaster recovery, communications, temporary power use and water pumping operations, anywhere power is required readily deployable. The unit has been extensively reengineered since the appearance on ABC’s New Inventors program. It is now wind speed certified for all regions including cyclonic. It is also engineered as sea freight ready, enabling transport as a standard container with all components secured inside and ready for construction at the destination. How did you come to appear on the New Inventors show? In 2009 we supplied an Outback Power Pack to a major WA electrical utility as a grid supply replacement for remote farm houses. At that time, we took out the necessary patents to secure the design. Following the successful granting of the patent, I entered an application

What’s on the agenda for 2012? The future of the Outback Power Pack is geared towards high quality, conforming standard industrial and reliability critical uses. We have very strong interest from the emerging market of Africa, a country that is short on reliable remote power. Being developed and well proven in and for the toughest conditions the Australian environment can throw at it, the Outback Power Pack is more than ready to assist the development of any industry anywhere in the world. Outback Energy Supply is also having very good results from our totally diesel free solar powered floodlighting solution and the take up of these small portable units is proving extremely popular for selected lighting situations. Utility scale MW solar arrays are also on the drawing board via our corporate international partners. These modular megawatt systems are able to be readily deployed at larger operations thereby reducing the fossil fuel power use of any operation with their own power generation. n

EXCITING YEAR

AHEAD for Resource Sector

I

f you are reading this, it’s likely you are on your way to work at one of Western Australia’s more than 1050 operating mine sites, 70 operating oil and gas fields or 169 mineral processing plants, producing more than 50 different types of minerals. The WA resources sector continues to outperform all other areas of the economy and its strong presence has enabled the country to avoid major economic Rio Tinto Operations at troubles during Dampier Port. Photo supplied by Christian the global Sprogue Photography. financial crisis and the continuing uncertainty we are seeing in Europe and the USA. We hear a lot about iron ore but in 2012 there will be other big stories to tell in mineral sands, gold, lithium and of course, the thriving oil and gas industry. Woodside’s Pluto project is nearing completion with the first LNG cargo estimated for March. Chevron’s Wheatstone LNG project has achieved final investment decision and the first sod has been turned at site. In addition, there will be a new port developed at Anketell and First Quantum is currently re-commissioning the Ravensthorpe Nickel Mine while the size of the deposit at Tropicana Gold Project by AngloGold Ashanti and Independence Group continues to increase. With a further $200billion worth of projects either underway or committed, there are further opportunities to come. The majority of the additional workforce will be driven by projects in the Pilbara, with an extra 34,000 workers needed this year alone. This figure will reduce to 21,000 extra workers by 2015 as the projects move from being built to being operated. The Mid-west will require another 7,500 workers this year which is the highest labour force growth rate of any region. The amount of people employed in the resources sector hit more than 100,000 for the first time in December 2011 and is on track to reach 120,000 by 2013. Despite significant challenges in the form of two new taxes to come into effect from the 1st July, it is an incredibly exciting time for the resources sector. It’s important that industry and government continue to work together to ensure the community receives the maximum benefit from the abundant natural resource endowment WA has been blessed with. Without the support of the WA community, the resources sector would not be able to function. It’s because you are on this plane that our state is the envy of the rest of Australia. Let’s keep it that way. n

DIGIROCK O n an unusually wet November evening, Digirock proudly played host to more than 70 women (and the odd bloke) from Perth’s mining industry at their fourth annual Women in Mining (WIMWA) event. The night of canapés and networking at the WA Rowing Club highlighted the important theme of ‘Indigenous Employment for the Future’, with Digirock delighted to have the assistance of some inspirational women from the ‘Indigenous Futures – Swan Program’. Throughout the night, guests were entertained by local Indigenous artist, Angela Rule and Kelli Austin provided a rare and, at times emotional insight into the difficulties facing Indigenous youth today. The ‘Indigenous Futures’ program is a not-for-profit organisation encompassing the Swan Education District’s Governor Stirling, Lockridge and Swan View Senior High Schools with support from local business. It helps Indigenous youth via long term support strategies, case management and a work readiness program to make the transition from school to further education, training or employment. Since starting in 2005, 70 per cent of participants have successfully made the

Fun Things For Tight Times BY FRAN SIDOTI OF SAVINGSGUIDE.COM.AU

T

he beginning of the year is a time of belt-tightening. The whirl of Christmas and New Years is over, work is here and

many of us will be looking for ways to save money and get back on track financially. While you might be putting every spare dime into your neglected savings, or trying to pay off your December credit card bill, it doesn’t mean life has to be a misery. Here are some things to keep you entertained while also keeping you solvent, inspired by Donna Freedman at MSN Money.

Get Some Learning It might seem like a much less appealing prospect than conking out in front of the telly, but learning a new skill or hobby has a lot of benefits. Firstly, it’s a much better way to relax as keeping your mind engaged on something you enjoy is a great stress release. Secondly, all the skills you learn might end up being something you can use in your career or as a second income. The Internet is your friend here. Type in anything you want to learn- how to write a novel, best DIY tips etc. The Internet is full of sites that can assist you in translation, step-by-step beginner courses and pronunciation.

Get Outside So often when we’re saving, we fall into the mindset that we need to stay inside to save ourselves from spending any money. Not the case. Now is a wonderful time in Australia to hit the beach or go for a bushwalk. Pack a lunch, and keep your spending budget to under $10. Start star-gazing, and learning the constellations. Get interested in bird-watching, photography or landscape drawing. There are so many fantastic things we can do for no cost in the great outdoors, and your mental state will thank you for it.

Club Cubs Our friendships are a huge positive in our lives, and getting social is one of the best ways to keep our mental state cheery (an important thing when your finances are less than delightful). Why not make the most of your wonderful network and start a club? It can be anything! Common examples are book clubs and exercise groups, but get creative about it. What about an arts club, or a spinners group? It’s about like-minded people doing things they enjoy- what could be better?

Become The Can-Do Chef Time for a challenge. Your partner, kids, friends, whoever, need to make dinner entirely from what is in the pantry. No cheating, no popping to the store for a little bit of saffron.

This is hardcore savings time. Google your ingredients and recipes are sure to come up. You’ll save money on your grocery bill, and will use up all the excess stock in your cupboard. Or why not try and make things you usually have to buy, like yogurt or sourdough bread? I’ve been experimenting with making the wondrous creation of nougat (an ongoing project), and there are a thousand ways you can save money by spending a little time making (generally expensive) items yourself for a third of the price. Freedman also has this suggestion, which I love. A wine-tasting party to find the best tasting cheap wine. Every one has some plonk they think is a bargain, so get your friends around to find the best wine for the best price. Everyone can bring their contender and some nibbles, having a great evening for no cost. For more tips on tightening your budget, visit www.savingsguide.com.au n

Kick your hangover G

to the curb

o a little too hard with the partying last night? Here are a couple of top hangover remedies to have you back in ship shape in no time!

as many will tell you, it does increase your metabolism, which will in turn increase the speed in which the body processes alcohol.

Coke The fizz helps with nausea and the caffeine and sugar will give you that all needed boost.

Bananas Bananas are sugar in the form of fructose and potassium as well as a natural antacid helping with nausea. The magnesium in bananas can also help with headaches.

Salty food Food generally helps all round, but salty is best. Although it won’t actually absorb alcohol

There are talks of a new over-the-counter drug available in America called Blowfish which apparently wipes out a hangover in just 15 minutes according to its manufacturers. Remember, these remedies really only help with the symptoms of your hangover. The hangover won’t actually stop until all the alcohol is out of your system, which of course takes time.

Two tablets of Blowfish contain: 1,000mg aspirin 120mg caffeine 816mg of sodium 25.2mg phenylalanine n

Prevent with Antioxidants

I

f you or someone you know is working in the mining industry, you will no doubt be aware of the certain health risks that come with the job. Long term exposure to fuels, reagents, solvents, detergents, chemicals, coal dust, silica dust, diesel, asbestos, welding fumes, poisonous plants, and metal dust, can have serious negative health impacts. Unlike acute injury, symptoms of toxicity can sometimes take years to surface, and can also present differently in different people. Toxicity might first present as fatigue, headaches, sinus infections or mood changes. If ignored, it could present as disease in the lungs, skin or digestive tract. Worse still, toxicity may lead to degenerative chronic diseases like cancer. On a cellular level, these toxic substances promote free radicals which cause cellular stress, severe oxidative damage and cell death, resulting in a state of sub-health and disease. But here’s the good news; you can counter a good deal of this oxidation by taking antioxidants.

Antioxidants are nature’s weapon against free radicals. If it’s inevitable that you will be in contact with toxic substances, which for most of the population this is the case, at least you can protect yourself with a daily dose of antioxidants. Not only do they counteract the harmful effects of free radicals, but they are anti-aging, prevent macular degeneration, inflammation, cholesterol build-up, and amongst many other things, can even help prevent a hangover!

3. Stay hydrated with filtered water. 1.5 2L a day minimum, and more for those who sweat a lot.

Here’s my top 5 ways to combat free radical damage:

4. Add organic herbs and spices to your cooking. Turmeric, cloves and rosemary are all super charged with antioxidants.

1.

Take a potent antioxidant supplement daily like ACAI. This Amazonian berry powder makes a delicious smoothie add in or addition to your breakfast cereal.

2.

Make your plate colourful! Different coloured fruits and veg contain different antioxidants, so mix it up! Fresh juices are also a good way to keep up your fruit and veg intake. If you have access, organic is best.

Deep breathing from your diaphragm actually reduces oxidative damage, research shows. Dedicate a few minutes as you wake up each morning to breathing deeply. Fill your lungs with air, right to the bottom lobes, and watch your belly rise and fall for up to 10 breaths. n

TOP 10 UNUSUAL REASONS

for

flight

delays

B

ad weather, strikes and IT glitches may cause most major flight disruptions, but escaping animals, lovesick turtles and missing pilots are also grounding their share of planes. While records show that most flights will take off as scheduled, unexpected events sometimes arise to disrupt normal flight patterns throughout the world. Student Flights has scoured the archives to compile a list of the most unusual reasons that have been blamed for recent flights delays or cancellations.

1.

Where’s my pilot?

Recently, the Times of India reported that two Air India flights had to be cancelled at Chennai airport after the airline’s pilots didn’t turn up for duty. One pilot reportedly refused to fly because he had completed his shift, while the replacement did not show.

2.

Here kitty, kitty

In December last year, a cheetah delayed a Qantas domestic flight in Australia. Handlers were reportedly concerned about the pallet being used to transport the big cat, named Tokoloshe, and called for reinforcement.

This was probably a smart move – in October 2008, a cheetah managed to escape from its cage in the cargo hold of a Delta domestic flight. Experts were called in and the cheetah (not to mention the baggage handler) was saved.

3.

Snakes on a plane

Life imitated art in April 2009, when Australia had its very own “snakes on a plane” incident. The incident was somewhat less dramatic than the 2006 Samuel L Jackson movie of the same name, with four baby pythons managing to escape from their cage. Two Qantas domestic flights were cancelled as a result.

7.

Pipigate

Not to be outdone, two sea otters escaped from their cage on a Continental domestic flight in the United States in December 2009. In this case, the otters made their way out of the cargo hold and on to the runway, delaying the flight by 80mins.

In August last year, French actor Gerard Depardieu was thrown off a flight from Paris to Dublin after he allegedly urinated on the plane’s floor. In an event that the French media dubbed “pipigate”, the actor attempted to use a small bottle after he was reportedly barred from using the lavatory before the plane took off. The flight, which was still on the runway, was delayed two hours while the carpet was cleaned.

4.

Otters on the loose

Lovesick turtles

In June last year, an annual display of “turtle romance” temporarily disrupted normal services at New York’s JFK airport. Each year, the turtles reportedly make a slow overland trek across the airport’s runways en-route to their breeding grounds.

6.

Broken toilets

Toilet-related concerns have also grounded

58

their share of flights. In August 2011, a Delta Airlines flight in the US made an emergency landing because of an overflowing toilet. The incident attracted additional headlines after a high profile passenger, former Guns n’ Roses guitarist Slash, used social media to share the story with the world. Also in the United States, a Continental Airlines flight in March was delayed three hours after a toilet in the first class cabin was found to be damaged.

People power

In November 2010, Ryanair’s flight schedule was disrupted after more than 100 angry customers refused to leave the plane after it was diverted to Belgium, rather than its intended destination in Northern France.

9.

UFOs or simply a bad smell?

Last month, several US websites carried a story claiming that UFO sightings prompted

the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to temporarily close air space over New York. According to the FAA, a gas-like smell promoted the closure.

10. Airspace violators – Lawnchair Larry One of the most unusual disruptions to flight schedules occurred in the United States almost 30 years ago when Lawrence Richard Walters literally “floated” into Los Angeles International Airport airspace. In 1982, the truck driver, who became known as “Lawnchair Larry”, caught a bird’s eye view of LA from the comfort of a patio chair that was attached to 45 helium weather balloons. Larry, who took off from a house in San Pedro California, reportedly intended to hover just above ground level but ultimately reached an altitude in excess of 4,000 metres. His in-flight survival kit included sandwiches, a CB radio, beer and a pellet gun, which he intended to use to gradually shoot the balloons and descend slowly back to terra firma. He managed to shoot several balloons before dropping the gun. Fortunately, Larry’s flight ended safely after his balloon eventually lost altitude and became tangled in wires, which caused a black-out in parts of Long Beach. n

SAFETY BRIEFING Please listen carefully to the Safety Briefing and take the time to read through the Safety On Board Card prior to takeoff. This will help you familiarise yourself with the emergency exits, brace position and the location of your life jacket. DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT) It has been reported that some airline passengers have developed clots in deep blood vessels, often in the lower legs, as a result of sitting for an extended period without exercise or movement. This condition is known medically as Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. If blood clot fragments break off and lodge in other areas of the body such as the lungs, they may cause a possible fatal pulmonary thrombosis when a person starts walking after being immobile for a long time. The risk factors for DVT include varicose veins, recent surgery or injury in the lower legs, malignant diseases, past history of DVT, obesity, pregnancy and recent childbirth. Anyone with these risk factors is advised to consult a doctor prior to flying to find out how to minimise the risk of DVT. During the flight, we recommend passengers take the following precautions: • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and minimise intake of alcohol. • Exercise onboard the aircraft by moving and stretching your toes, rotating your ankles, raising and lowering each leg and massaging your calves gently. In addition, we suggest that you avoid crossing your legs. SEATBELTS Seatbelts must be firmly fastened for take-off, landing and whilst the seatbelt sign is illuminated. We do recommend that your seatbelt be fastened at all times whilst seated in case of unexpected turbulence. TRAY TABLES/SEAT BACKS Please ensure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the upright position for take-off and landing. SMOKING Government regulations strictly prohibit smoking on all domestic flights. Special smoke detectors have been fitted to the toilet on board the aircraft. Smoking is also prohibited on the tarmac and throughout the terminal buildings. CARRY ON LUGGAGE If you have carry on luggage please stow it in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Hand luggage not correctly stowed may cause injury in the event of unexpected turbulence. ELECTRONIC DEVICES Hazards exist to aircraft systems by Electro-Magnetic Interference from Portable Electronic Devices. The interference can cause aircraft systems to malfunction. To provide adequate protection for the aircraft please note that: mobile phones are not to be used at any time on board the aircraft. Other devices such as compact disc players, portable palm top and lap top computers, cassette players, personal electronic organisers or personal video games may be used during cruise only, NOT when the aircraft is taking off and landing.

TALK BACK WITH

Charli Robinson OCCUPATION: Breakfast radio host - SeaFm , TV Host - It’s a Knock Out and The Dirt (my own nightly entertainment radio show nationally).

FAVOURITE TRAVEL DESTINATION AND WHY: I seem to have travelled for work so much internationally that my holidays are happily in Port Stephens, NSW with family. When I have managed to jet off for pleasure my favourite is a train ride through Italy. Stopping at little towns, drinking beautiful wines and eating copious amounts of pasta! My hidden treasures include Asolo and Corinaldo. WHAT DO YOU NEVER TRAVEL WITHOUT AND WHY: A universal adapter! Phone chargers, laptops, even hair straighteners are not worth living without. I get so homesick without texting family all the time while away! TRAVEL TIP: During my ten years touring with hi5 I did a lot of sight-seeing alone. It taught me no matter how beautiful a building, breath taking a mountain or sunset, having someone to share that with makes it so much more memorable and special. I’d take my dad on tour to the UK as much as possible and beers in pubs and old English

museums were all the more incredible! So my tip, travel with the one you love or friend you make while travelling - and get ready for fun!

MOST EMBARRASSING/FUNNY TRAVEL STORY: My first international trip, I was in Hi5 and I had left my passport beside my bed at my parent’s house, three hours drive from Sydney airport! The rest of hi5 had to go on their flight, while I waited alone at the airport. It was Christmas and I sat crying, but then a Santa started singing to me to cheer me up! So random but needed! Three hours went by while the most expensive courier ride ever delivered my passport two minutes before the last flight to NZ closed check in! I made it- and my first overseas journey began. I’ve never forgotten my passport again! WHAT’S COMING UP FOR YOU IN 2012? There will be a lot of travel! I’ve just started breakfast radio on the Gold Coast which I love, and still work in Sydney often for my Dirt show. Filming It’s a Knock Out was hilarious fun and a reminder how much I love being in front of the camera. This year, I’ll enjoy my new jobs and make the most of my new coastal life style. n
