Meet the Staff: Bernard powderly travel centre manager (Canberra) MY JOB ENTAILS… I’m the travel centre manager for CountryLink here in Canberra. I have a small staff of 8 people. I also manage Yass junction which is about 55 km from Canberra – there’s one staff member out there. I also manage Queanbeyan which is staffed by the Railway Historical Society staff, and I also look after Bungendore which is an un-manned station between Canberra and Goulburn. THE FIRST THING I DO WHEN I GET INTO WORK IS… Normally greet the staff that are already there, plus the morning train crew who arrive at 6am. I then proceed to the travel centre where I prepare to sell tickets to the early morning passengers. Then I do station accounts from the previous days work and check emails. THE THING I LOVE MOST ABOUT MY JOB IS… It’s different every day. Every passenger you greet has a different story to tell. They might want to go on a holiday package to the north coast or maybe a friendly day trip to Sydney.

It’s great meeting different people with a different story to tell on where they want to go and what they want to do. THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE ANYONE EVER GAVE ME WAS… When I started as a 20 year old in 1974, my first boss told me I was never going to sit around and be lazy and do nothing on trains - I was going to further my education on the railway. The second was I was going to join the best superannuation plan in the land – and he wasn’t wrong! WHEN I’M NOT AT WORK, YOU’LL FIND ME… Either in the gym or on the golf course! THE THING I LOVE MOST ABOUT WORKING FOR COUNTRYLINK IS… The friendly atmosphere. I enjoy coming to work every day. Every customer that walks in the door has a new story to tell. Also, to be able to help someone. To be able to put a holiday package together for someone and they go off and have a fantastic time - that for me is very rewarding.

any travellers think they know what to expect on Queensland’s Gold Coast; the brilliant beaches, super Surfers Paradise nightlife, dozens of theme parks and some of the best looking talent in the country - but only a lucky few explorers have uncovered more than the tacky travel brochures and stiff travel guides are willing to divulge. How did they miss the 100,000 hectares of World Heritage-listed rainforest just 30 minutes from the city, the 500 kilometres of canals which roam around the inner precincts, the broadwater full of year round water sports or the indigenous landmarks which have been sacred for thousands of years? BEACHES It’s not called the Gold Coast for nothing. The city sits on a 70 kilometre stretch of fine, sandy gold beaches washed constantly by the subtropical South Pacific Ocean. If you can’t find your own piece of beach heaven here, you won’t find it anywhere. Some beaches to get you started include Surfers Paradise Beach, Burleigh Heads Beach and the gorgeous Kirra Beach.

You’ll be out tackling an adrenaline adventure or natural wonder somewhere within the Gold Coast’s coastline, islands, rainforests or waterways. uring April, Sydney Aquarium will launch an in-venue Ocean Quest to help drive awareness of marine science. The Ocean Quest, which is targeted at kids aged 4 to 15, will highlight significant marine conservation topics and various projects being carried out at Sydney Aquarium and sponsored by the Sydney Aquarium Conservation Fund including: shark research, tracking and tagging; penguin breeding; dugong research; shark reproduction; and a new initiative for Sydney Aquarium, coral propagation. Visitors will be given a treasure map and asked to answer questions based on information found at conservation Quest Points around the attraction. On completion of the treasure map, visitors will receive a Jnr Oceanologist certificate and discount offers at Sydney Aquarium. Here are some highlights of the Quest points: Coral Propagation – a new Sydney Aquarium conservation initiative To learn more about coral and minimise the

impact of coral collection, Sydney Aquarium has undertaken a coral propagation program to supply their tanks and encourage other aquarium enthusiasts to do the same. Little Penguins The Sydney Aquarium penguin exhibit opened in 1997 with four birds that came from Melbourne Zoo. Since then, Sydney Aquarium has had the success of hatching 48 Little Penguin chicks. Of the chicks raised there, some have been used to boost Sydney Aquarium’s current population while others have been moved to other institutions as part of a breeding program throughout Australia.

Dugongs Sydney Aquarium is home to two of only six dugongs on display anywhere in the world. ‘Pig’ and ‘Wuru’ – both orphaned in the wild in QLD – arrived at Sydney Aquarium in 2008 and took up residence in a purposemodified exhibit. Dugongs are rarely kept in captivity and consequently there is very little known about them. The research and findings gleaned from our experiences with Pig and Wuru is providing groundbreaking new information about the species and its reproductive development and behaviour, potentially giving valuable insights into how wild populations could be preserved. eyond the Darling, on the edge of sundown they used to say, as if there was nowhere further to travel in Australia. Or perhaps it was simply the feeling of standing at the lookout over the Mundi Mundi Plains near Silverton and suddenly being confronted by all that space like some vast inland sea rolling into sunset. Out here are clear blue skies and magic light much loved by film makers from Mad Max 2 to Priscilla. Out here the big red roos boom two hundred kilometres in a night chasing a thunderstorm. Out here the Sturt Peas bloom in dark red soils and the wind blows silence. Out here tower mullock heaps that represent billions of dollars that drove the economy of a fledgling Federation. Out here it is easy to be reminded of the struggles of pioneers.

Events include the Silver City Show in September and the famous St Patrick’s Race Club Meeting two weeks prior to Easter. The 4x4 Outback Challenge in May provides an opportunity for spectators to experience an event where the area’s natural features and elements test man and machine to their limits. A number of gymkhanas and picnic race meetings occur throughout the region over the year. The Accessible Outback leads into Silverton, Milparinka, Tibooburra, White Cliffs, Ivanhoe, Menindee and the Lakes, and the national parks of Sturt, Kinchega, Mutawintji, Mungo and Paroo Darling.

It is possible to take guided tours of former mines, view rare and beautiful minerals, clamber over head frames or have a walk with the locals and let them explain what the city is all about.

All these areas are accessible with good graded roads. Coach and 4WD companies offer day and half day tours, overnight tours and extended package tours to the real outback.

In a sense there is too much history to be contained in the four walls of a museum, too many relics such as the remnants of BHP’s first office to be displayed behind glass. Through its heritage drives and walks you are encouraged to discover something of Broken Hill’s history and in doing so to discover a little of the history of this nation. Broken Hill’s residents are actively encouraged to restore their heritage homes and buildings and in doing so preserve that special character of the place. From the heritage lookouts it begins to become possible to comprehend the magnitude of the “Line of Lode”, that seven kilometre strip of what was once the biggest deposit of Silver, Lead and Zinc in the world.

There are 22 hotels and eight registered clubs. There’s entertainment everywhere. Play Two-up in NSW’s only traditional legalised school.

Broken Hill is one of the nation’s most exciting art centres and has captured the

When Only a Flying C Doctor Can Help

amping in the bush was a great adventure for Sydney-based Nicole Widdicombe and her family until an accident hundreds of kilometres away from help threatened her son’s eyesight. Nicole Widdicombe lives in Sydney with her partner Matthew and their two young boys, Lachlan and Ben. If they need a doctor, they pop down the road. If they need a hospital, they jump in the car. “Living in a city you take it for granted,” says Nicole. During the Easter school holidays in 2008, Nicole and her family were camping in Willandra National Park, in central NSW. “We were in an isolated spot with no-one else around,” says Nicole. “It was beautiful. As the evening wore on we found sticks to roast marshmallows over the fire and the boys were having a great time, joining in the fun around the campfire, when Lachlan, then four, suddenly started crying. Quite by accident, his brother Ben, six, had caught him in the eye with one of the sticks.” Lachlan’s eye was sore but it didn’t look like a serious injury. Even so, Nicole and Matthew drove 80kms to Ivanhoe the next day to get him checked out, and, as luck would have it, a Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) team

from Broken Hill were holding a clinic in town that same day. Within an hour of arriving, Nicole and Lachlan were on an emergency flight to Adelaide. “The doctor looked at his eye and thought it would be best to get him checked out - it all happened so quickly,” she continued. “The flight to Adelaide took about an hour and a half, there was an ambulance waiting on the ground when we got there, and we were whisked straight to hospital.” An ophthalmologist examined Lachlan and decided he needed urgent surgery, so he was sent straight into theatre. Thankfully the operation was a success and Lachlan is none the worse for his accident. “Living in Sydney, it never crossed my mind we might need to call on the Flying Doctor

The Widdicombe family are not alone in needing the help of the Flying Doctor. Each year, the doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and pilots of the RFDS help over 275,000 patients across Australia. That’s 751 patients like Lachlan every single day. So while you’re travelling with CountryLink across Australia, rest assured that should you need the Flying Doctor, help is only a phone call away.

The Coonamble Rodeo & Campdraft

N

ow in its 56th year, the Coonamble Rodeo & Campdraft is recognised as the largest event held each year in the town and is the largest combined rodeo/ campdraft in the Southern Hemisphere. The event attracts amazing support from the Coonamble community and this year, nearly 50 businesses will sponsor the event. Also this year, the Rodeo & Campdraft received the Community Event of the Year Award at the local Australia Day awards. Around 1000 cowboys and cowgirls, along with approximately 4000 spectators, head to town transforming the Coonamble Showground into a full-on explosion of

wild riding action. In recent years, so many visitors arrived that the local caravan park had to knock down a fence and extend into the neighbouring park to accommodate all the caravans. On Saturday and Sunday, the cowboys launch from the chutes competing for over $30,000 worth of prize money in steer wrestling, calf roping, barrel racing and, of course, the glamour events of the saddle bronc, bareback and bull rides. On Monday, the Junior Rodeo sees the up and coming stars of the rodeo circuit compete. The rodeo is run by the Coonamble Rodeo Association and an unpaid volunteer committee. One of the unique elements of

the event is the fact that the association is a registered charity and each year makes donations back to worthy community organisations. With premiere performances by the likes of Sonny Rollins (USA), Sun Ra Arkestra (USA), Faust (Germany), Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (USA), and many more, the Melbourne International Jazz Festival has the most exhilarating and diverse program to date. This year’s event is all about the playful curiosity ever-present in jazz and improvisation and now includes the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend, allowing more time to enjoy the wonders of jazz in its many forms. Ready yourself for an adventurer’s playground where sounds of every shape and colour will be catapulted out into the city and beyond. In their third year, the artistic team of Artistic Director Michael Tortoni and Program Director Sophia Brous have created a

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

program that brings leading international jazz luminaries to Australia for festival exclusive and Australian debut performances. Many of the artists will perform more than once, in a myriad of activities across the program. Headlining the rollcall of international guests is the undisputable living legend, tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins, in a rare visit to Melbourne. Making their festival debuts are the eclectic and outrageous Sun Ra Arkestra, under the direction of original member Marshall Allen; legendary German band Faust, arguably the most significant of all

The Cockatoo Run

Krautrock groups; and the unique brass band - Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – comprising eight brothers from the south side of Chicago who are inspired by hip-hop artists such as Public Enemy and NWA. Performing for the first time in Australia are jazz elder Lee Konitz, the leading exponent of cool jazz; and Ron Carter, one of the most influential, prolific and original bassists in jazz. Local artists include James Morrison, Tex Perkins, Eddie Perfect, The Raah Project, Jamie Oehlers, Scott Tinkler, Katie Noonan and many, many more. With over 400 performers, more than 120 events - including 46 free events, six world premieres, 20 Australian premieres, 16 Festival exclusives and 12 Australian/ international collaborations, the 2011 Melbourne International Jazz Festival is the largest and most diverse festival of its kind in Australia, with the most expansive free program to date.
