Sea C loud Explore the most beautiful coasts of Italy, France and Spain October 2018
Palazzi and Limoncello, fishing villages, artists’ colonies and elegant boulevards – experience the colourful diversity of the Mediterranean The scenic Amalfi Coast
The small port town of Collioure
Violet bougainvillea in front of pastel pink facades; houses clinging to the cliffs like swallows’ nests; a grand open staircase looking out onto the glistening turquoise sea – Sorrent, Positano and Amalfi sometimes seem too good to be true.
A tiny chapel on the rock, a picturesque fortified church and the mighty Château Royal are the first sights to greet you as you approach this small port from the sea. Collioure is a textbook example of a charming fishing village that has always attracted painters and poets thanks to its idyllic coastal location, colourful facades and fascinating light.
Cinque Terre: five villages above the cliff tops
Alongside a coastal stretch of only about 12 kilometres (7.5 miles), the five Ligurian villages of the Cinque Terre sit like pearls on a string. Brightly coloured, the dreamy villages Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore look out through the vineyards above sheer cliffs plunging steeply into the sea.
Barcelona and its famous architect
Menton, sweet town of lemons
Tarragona: a smaller Rome in Spain
Where Nice and Cannes show off, Menton impresses with elegant restraint. The sweet little town on the Eastern Côte d’Azur is a lot less touristy than its flashy neighbours, enchanting visitors with Italian flair and pastelcoloured facades in its old town.
A s a busy provincial town, antique Tarragona was like little Rome in Iberia. Triumphal arches, aqueducts, the amphitheatre and the Forum Romanum are witnesses of its glorious past.
Glamorous Monte Carlo
Formula One races in its narrow streets; gambling in the world’s most famed casino; opulent productions in its opera house – people in Monte Carlo like to enjoy life to the full. Fancy a walk from Monaco’s harbour with its luxury yachts up the hill to the palace and cathedral? If you’d rather save your strength, you can simply take the escalator.
Like no other public figure, the idiosyncratic architect Antoni Gaudí shaped the city with his fairy-tale buildings full of organic shapes and extravagant ideas. Plans are to complete his masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia, by 2026, one hundred years after Gaudí’s death.
Three Balearic Islands with character
While nature lovers prefer Menorca as a wild and romantic paradise, Mallorca entices with busy seaside towns and idyllic rural villages. And among its typical white square houses and colourful hippie markets, charming Ibiza conveys pure relaxation.
