VISIT UZBEKISTAN

10 REASONS TO INVEST IN TOURISM IN UZBEKISTAN

The tourism industry of Uzbekistan has a significant potential as the liberalisation of the country’s economy attracts more and more international investors. In 2018 the tourist flow to Uzbekistan increased twice compared to 2017. Traveler’s vote high for Uzbekistan in opinion polls and ratings of National Geographic, Lonely Planet, AirBnB and sources. Being at the beginning of a new economic endowments is perhaps the best thing that can happen to investments. Our editorial team has prepared a checklist, why it is worthy to invest in tourism industry of Uzbekistan right now.

1. GOVERNMENT SUPPORT Government shows a great interest in the development of tourism infrastructure, providing assistance in simplification of processes and еncouraging the segment’s growth. The State Committee on Tourism of Uzbekistan presented the Concept for the development of tourism in the country until 2025, where the priority are: the development of tourism and related infrastructure, the formation of an accessible and comfortable tourist environment; implementation and strengthening of the social role of external and domestic tourism; improving the quality and competitiveness of the tourist product of Uzbekistan in the domestic and global markets.

4. NEW TOURIST ZONES

2. LIBERALIZATION OF ECONOMY

Free tourism zones are created in Uzbekistan, providing attractive conditions for the construction and operation of hotels and cultural and recreational complexes, shopping and entertainment centres, and other facilities. Among them are Chimgan-Charvak resort area in the Tashkent region, Tashkent City and Samarkand City projects, Ancient Bukhara and others.

Over the past two years, in the various world rankings, including the World Bank Doing Business, a huge dynamics of changes in the economy of Uzbekistan is visible. In the Ease of Doing Business index - in 2018 Uzbekistan is on the 11th line. Simplification of procedures in the field of hotel business and tourism services continues, including the abolition of certain types of licensing, the transfer of the regulatory function of local authorities to the practice of public control. Cross-border trade and relations between the countries of Central Asia are developing, which leads to an increase in the flow of regional tourists, as well as new opportunities for combined tours and services.

5. TOURIST KLONDIKE

3. TAX INCENTIVES Companies that take part in the construction and modernization of hotels are exempt from taxes for a period of 5 years. For companies that build thematic and ethno-parks these tax incentives are given for 3 years. Foreign specialists working in local hotels are exempt from income tax. Import of specialised equipment and components for the hospitality industry is exempted from custom fees for 5 years. Customs exemptions for the importation of specialized equipment and components for the hospitality industry are valid for 5 years. Entrepreneurs are provided unused land in perspective areas for the development of tourism, with the right of exemption from land tax. Long-term loans (up to 15 years) with minimal interest and flexible conditions are allocated for the construction and modernization of tourist infrastructure facilities.

Uzbekistan has a huge tourism potential: food tourism; mountain and eco-tourism; tourism on the cultural and historical heritage of the country; alpine skiing tourism; pilgrimage tourism in holy places. Currently demand exceeds supply in all areas of tourism in Uzbekistan: from infrastructure to tour operators, guides and quality service. Small presence of well-known international hotel brands and high demand for affordable hostels and guest houses opens many opportunities for investment. The low level of competition is evident in the field of smart tourism solutions, the implementation of IT at cultural heritage sites, the development of audio guides for museums, convenient smart-navigation around the cities, online services for booking, etc.

INTELLECTUAL POTENTIAL Uzbekistan is convenient for many of business areas, thanks to the relatively affordable cost of local specialists. At the same time, the level of education, language skills and talent of the younger generation is reasonably high. More than 500 000 graduates enter the labor market annually, including graduates from international universities and colleges in the tourism and services sectors. In 2018 International Tourism University “Silk Road launched in Samarkand. This university will prepare professionals and researchers in the field of international tourism.

ТАНЗИЛА НАРБАЕВА:

РАЗБИВАЯ СТЕКЛЯННЫЙ ПОТОЛОК Text: Maftuna Usmanova Photos: Farrukh Isamukhamedov

CONNECTING UZBEKISTAN AND SINGAPORE The Counsellor of Trade and Economic Issues of the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Singapore Mr. Bakhodir Saidov as an initiator and organizer of the Cultural Evening shared his thoughts with Visit Uzbekistan. What are your impressions on the recent Cultural Event of Uzbekistan in Singapore? How was the preparation works? Uzbekistan Cultural Evening organized with our partners Dinara&Co. and Vmall Entertainment is the first time in Embassy’s history such kind of magnificent event happened. The idea of the event came to our mind last year after I had been appointed to Singapore as Trade and Economic Counsellor. Before the process began, we had set our ambition to make a successful event with Dinara Dultaeva founder of the Visit Uzbekistan Partnership. The preparation of event was started 3 months ago. Honestly, this event was a great test and challenge for us, because some of our team members

left us during the process. However, despite all the difficulties, our goal was to organize this event at a high level, and it seems to me that we achieved our aim, of course with the support of Veena Prakash’s team and a team of SkyGarden at iFly. The result can be considered according to the positive impressions of people who visited the event. What is your opinion on the dynamics of bilateral relations between Singapore and Uzbekistan? In my opinion, which could be confirmed by many, bilateral relations of the countries are developing rapidly, and during the last years, improvement is especially noticeable. I must admit

there is growing interest to Uzbekistan not only from Singapore but also all Southeast Asia countries. As a result of this, our main task is to strengthen and further expand mutually beneficial relations between the countries in all areas. The main target of the Embassy is the development of long-term and mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation between Uzbekistan and Singapore, based not only on the principals of trust and openness but also on the principles of a win-win situation, where each partner achieves own goals. I am certain the positive trend of bilateral cooperation among government and business circles will continue and increase in the years to come and particularly within 2019.

VISIT UZBEKISTAN

H.E. Ambassador Mr. Kakhramon Shakirov with guests of the evening

W

e have to create a competitive business environment for the investors, safe and reliable tourism for the tourists.

What are the future plans of the Embassy on the improvement of the touristic/ investment relations of the two countries? Uzbekistan government’s intentions are to make the country attractive to foreign partners for the realization of mutually beneficial projects. Hence we have to create a competitive business environment for the investors, safe and reliable tourism for the tourists. If we talk about investment relations, we are planning to do Investment Forum by the end of this year with the support of the Singapore Business Federation and Singapore Enterprise. With huge confidence, I can say this forum will attract more investors, business circles, shareholders and increase their interest in Uzbekistan. The satisfactory results of the forum will show its outcome within the next year. The number of tourists from Singapore to Uzbekistan has been grown by 61 percent compared last year, and it is growing year by year. Embassy always participates in Road Shows, tourism exhibitions and fairs in Singapore to attract more people to our country. Moreover, the significant result of the work of our embassy is the opening Uzbekistan-Singapore Tourism Centre at the beginning of the year with S.E.A Business Centre, and the idea of opening

belongs to His Excellency Ambassador of Uzbekistan in Singapore Kakhramon Shakirov. This center is aimed to develop bilateral relations in the field of tourism, in particular, it should help us attract new visitors from Singapore to our country. Can we already see any results in the work of the Uzbekistan-Singapore Tourism Centre?

The Center is aimed at improving relations in the tourism sector between the two countries, and one of the main targets is promoting Uzbekistan and conducting events to familiarize Singaporeans with the achievements of our country. Furthermore, the Centre helps to investors who are willing to invest in the country. Although the center was opened in February this year, the team already brought many businessmen to introduce them with the culture and business environment, economic reforms of the country, share the knowledge of new privileges and benefits to do business in Uzbekistan. A few events have already been held, where the possibilities of Uzbekistan in the field of tourism and the investment climate of the country were presented. One of these events took place in the office of the Mybank, where new contacts were established with potential partners. Are there any plans for further development? We have only one plan – implementation of the development strategy of Uzbekistan which covers all sectors of the economy of our country. This strategy plan approved by our President and dedicated for the coming five years.

A New Life of Modern Pentathlon in Uzbekistan Yegor Melentyev

Bakhromjon Gaziev is an extraordinary athlete with bright and promising ideas in sports. Young entrepreneur and master of equestrian sport, he is leading new sport types for Uzbekistan – fencing, freestyle swimming, equestrian show jumping, pistol shooting, cross country running – in one-word pentathlon

Pentathlon is a young sport in Uzbekistan. What is the current state of this sport? Modern pentathlon has been neglected for many years after Uzbekistan became independent. This led to almost complete disappearance of pentathlon in our country. There is little technical base, there is neither a sports center nor a sports school for training of pentathletes. To be frank, we do not even have qualified trainers or modern methods of training athletes. We can say that we had to start everything from scratch. But

we are not alone; we are supported by the government. In recent years, public health and the development of physical culture and sports have become a priority in Uzbekistan’s social policy. The organization of mass sports and recreational activities and the promotion active lifestyle have been in the center of attention for the president of the Republic of Uzbekistan - Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The government is eager to provide comprehensive support for the development and popularization of modern pentathlon in Uzbekistan.

The signing of Memorandum of Understanding with the VicePresident of Modern Pentathlon Federation of Kazakhstan

What specific steps do you plan to take as the head of the national federation for the development of this sport? Since the program for the development of modern pentathlon covers an extensive ground of work, we decided to divide the tasks into operational and prospective groups. Our operational tasks include the opening of clubs for modern pentathlon at children’s sports schools and the Republican School of Sports Excellence in Equestrian Sports at the National Guard of the Republic of Uzbekistan; the training of qualified coaches and referees; the creation and strengthening of the material and technical base, since modern pentathlon requires extensive material support. As for prospective goals, we plan to build a multi-functional training base in modern pentathlon, organize international competitions, conduct academic research and promote physical culture, sports and healthy lifestyle among our people. How many sport centers and schools related to pentathlon are there in the country today? Unfortunately, there is none. But I am sure that it is a matter of time. Hopefully soon enough schools, departments and sports clubs for training pentathlon athletes will start opening in Tashkent first and then in other regions of Uzbekistan too.

How much time do you spend training these days? Who is your coach? I train every day for several hours at my stable. I try not to miss any training, despite the fact that I have a very busy schedule. Even during the holy month of Ramadan, when all Muslims fast during the daytime, I do not stop training, choosing to train at night instead. I don’t have a specific coach. But several times a year I invite famous coaches from Germany, Russia, and Belarus, who share their skill and knowledge through master classes.

This kind of sport requires large financial investment for holding competitions and for training courses. Are there any sources of funding for this sport, besides state support? Are you able to attract sponsors? As wise men say, “one man, no man”. Certainly, a lot of work is being done to attract sponsors and financial assistance. Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM), the Asian Confederation on Modern Pentathlon (ACMP) are ready to support our young federation. However, while most of the budgets come from our own funds, we always welcome newcomers with investment who wish to be a part of our great family. This sport is new and unfamiliar to the most of Uzbekistan’s population and it needs to be developed. Monetary assistance or volunteering in coaching would be a perfect gift for us. Equestrian sport is becoming popular nowadays in the countries of Central Asia and particularly in Uzbekistan. What do you think is the main reason for such popularity? Historically, Central Asia has been the largest horse-breeding center. In ancient times a horse was the most important means of arming the troops and was also used in trade relations with other nations, postal services and transport. In addition, various types of equestrian competitions and games gained increasing popularity in Uzbekistan, as a result of which the population learned to appreciate good horses, in particular stallions. We can proudly say that the love for horses runs in our blood. You are familiar with equestrian sport from the inside. Tell us how and when did you start your career as an athleteequestrian? I have loved horses since childhood. Already in the fifth grade, after school, I ran to my grandfather, where my first horse “Baikal” was waiting for me. I spent all my free time with her. That is when I realized that I could no longer imagine my life without horses. Now I am seriously involved in horse breeding and have 73 horses in the stable. As a professional athlete, I began my career in 2010. Today I am the master of sports at the international level.

I

realized that I could no longer imagine my life without horses.

The summer sports season is rich in major equestrian events. What competitions did you personally participate in and what awards did you bring back to Uzbekistan? Summer months are filled with a variety of international competitions in show jumping that are held in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg. Perhaps the most important of the past competitions was the qualification competition for the 2020 Olympic Games, held in Moscow, where our national team came in fourth. The end of July turned out pretty successful for me personally. At international competitions CSI2 * / CSI1 * YH “Сup of the First President of the Russian Federation B.N. Yeltsin”, held on July 24-27th in the Sverdlovsk region (Russia), I won two silver and one bronze medal.

INTERVIEW

VISIT UZBEKISTAN

Anor – one of the best representatives of Uzbek traditional outfit and culture. Dilnoza Umirzakova – master and designer at Anor, made impossible possible for traditional clothes and made local fabrics to be recognized around the world.

From Ideas to Plan – From Plan to Reality Exclusive interview with the founder of Anor fashion brand Nigora Kosimova

How did you come up with the idea of opening Anor and what inspires you? Initially, I wanted to open a small workshop to fulfill my ideas. At that time, I did not think about becoming part of creative brand. My clients liked my sketches and I started to offer evening dresses made of satin, adras or bakhmal, as from childhood I love our national fabrics. Many people liked my ideas of evening dresses, and this led me to create fashion collections. When I started working in this area, evening dresses were mostly imported from other countries. Despite the fact that we started as an ordinary workshop, in 2015 we changed the format of the atelier to the format of the Fashion House. From 2019, we switched to the Haute Couture. We are gradually moving towards the high-end fashion world. When we performed our collection at the runway as part of the Tashkent Fashion Week in 2015, we presented about 60 outfits and from that moment, I started my professional career.

I have always been inspired by our culture, our national fabrics, narrow streets, the national dining table - khontahta - I love all these since childhood. And this love led me to use of national heritage in fashion. Even when I made a big step to the world level runways, I was sure that my choice was very beautiful and knew that I was in the right way. Did international fashion weeks affect your vision? Yes of course. I became more confident after my first performance in Milan fashion week. For me, these trips are a kind of high level which is a break through when you find out what you are good at. I was waiting for the right moment and preparing for it for 3 years. It all started in 2015. At the presentation of my collection in Tashkent, I met the president of the Italian Fashion House, Mr. Mario Bozelli. After being familiar with my work, he visited our showroom. He said that there are a lot of beautiful outfits in the collection, that I am on the right way. He shared with me

several tips for participating in world-class shows. Thanks to the self-confidence obtained after meeting with Mr. Boselli, I began to work hard. At first there was a dream, this dream turned into plans, and those plans came true with time, and finally, in 2018 I participated with my fashion show in Milan Fashion Week. Do you plan to collaborate western famous brands in the nearest future? There were invitations for collaboration from representatives of several brands and photographers, as well as jewelry professionals in London, Italy, and America. We decided to discuss everything in September when I go to Milan for my third runaway show. I would like to share exclusive information with Visit Uzbekistan readers - we started working with one Russian brand. I really liked the sewing technique of our partners and the whole idea. Collection of swimsuits, burkini, and other beach accessories will be presented with our traditional ikat print on them. We will present our collection in March 2020.

VISIT UZBEKISTAN

3 must-visit places in Uzbekistan The streets of Margilan. In each street, you will see threads dyed with different colors, which give the streets an unusual view. In Margilan, each family is engaged in fabrics and therefore you will see such beauty in every yard. Bukhara. Khiva - Ichan Qal’a

Can you recommend 3 places, where guests can buy quality fabrics and national clothes? In Bukhara. Bukhara Brilliant Silk. In Margilan at workshop of Dodajonov Fazliddin. He has the most exclusive fabrics. At the Chorsu bazaar in Tashkent, there is one seller Bakhtiyar, known as Doda. He has very good and quality fabrics.

In 2016, you created the uniform for Uzbek Olympic team in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Did you face any difficulties? I have been trying to achieve this for a very long time - the creation of parade uniform and cooperation with the Olympic Committee. Unfortunately, not all sketches have passed the requirements. It was quite difficult to explain the creative ideas, but we were able to come to a compromise and find something in common. In the end, we were pleased with the result. It is worth noting that the Olympic team looked distinguished among others - with white jackets (for men) and blue chapans (for women). After the release, I read all the reviews and comments about our team and found information that the uniform created by us was in the top 10 list. In 2020, the Olympic Games will be held again. My team and I have already started to offer ideas. I hope for a new creative collaboration. What are your requirements on the quality of fabrics and how do you choose prints and patterns? We carefully choose high-quality fabric. 80% of the fabrics that we use are natural, almost 70% from which is silk. At the luxury level, one of the tasks is to provide the best quality clothing. I pay attention to the tailoring as well. Our technique is a little different from the usual one. Usually, to sew one blouse in some random atelier it may take an hour, but we make it within two hours.

We try to do everything in high quality, as quality comes first for us. I draw the patterns myself and offer them to various factories that we work with - these are in Margilan, with private enterprises that produce silk fabrics. They create each fabric according to the designer’s sketch. What kind of comfortable café and restaurants would you recommend for tourists? I and my family members prefer to eat in the restaurant “Multi Mafe”- there is a playground, where my children love to play. Their pizza is very tasty. We also like to visit the restaurant Basilic. However, most of all, I prefer to cook at home, spend time at home with my family. Can you list the dishes that you like to cook for your guests? Our daughters love Besh Barmak (Shilpildok - made with boiled pasta wedges, vegetables and seasoned with fragrant spices) and my spouse loves plov very much. We often cook these dishes. For breakfast, we love to cook katlama - puff pastry, rolled out in large rings. You can cook katlama with onions - it is very tasty and healthy. Uzbekistan with one word Love Your wishes to readers of Visit Uzbekistan magazine I wish them comfort wherever they are, and to be loved and honored in each new place.

Uzbek fashion stands out with its rich interconnection of cultures, bright colors, and courage of unexpected mixes. Foreign guests always mark unusual wardrobe of the local citizens. Especially when it comes to national and festive clothing, which is experiencing a revival today. Of course, there is a desire to try on everything and take away much of the clothes with you. But how to stay wise while choosing fashion in Uzbekistan? Designer Nilufar Abduvaliyeva suggests five street looks, complementing the modern style by elements of Uzbek traditions.

1

Chapan made of alo-bakhmal can be combined with different styles, and it looks good not only with jeans, shirts and T-shirts, but also makes up a worthy ensemble for an evening dress.

MY PERFECT DAY

VISIT UZBEKISTAN

UZBEKISTAN FROM ABOVE: THE STORY OF AN UNFORGETTABLE CLIMB I could hardly contain my excitement as we approached the airfield. It was Sunday morning, Summer 2019, and my first trip to Uzbekistan. A few days before, our group had been offered a guided helicopter tour into the mountains and I jumped at the opportunity. Our guides from Ulysse Tour Company met us at the newly renovated Tashkent airport and gave us some basic instructions. Just a few moments later, we were boarding our helicopter and lifting off. Tashkent is the beautiful capital of Uzbekistan, and the views of the city from the air are breathtaking. However, very quickly we were outside of the city and passing over a pristine lake tucked away on a plateau on the western end of the Tian-Shan (“Heavenly”) mountains. Our flight was very smooth, as we climbed ever higher. Speeding along in a helicopter flanked by towering mountains on either side, my senses were heightened, and I was exhilarated. I wouldn’t have been disappointed with a helicopter tour alone. However, a few moments later, we descended next to a sparkling glacial Ikhnach lake surrounded by a horseshoe of massive peaks. I vividly remember stepping off our helicopter and gazing up towards the mountains. Warm sunshine, a cool breeze, and green grass greeted our first steps. It was a wonderful moment. In the distance, was what looked like a hike-able ridge leading toward an impressive summit. My two friends, John and Mutaz agreed that we should attempt to hike the ridge. While most of our group remained by the lake

themselves. Hoping to reach the summit, I continued on. Ascending what I figured to be another 1,000 meters, the terrain became more and more extreme until I reached a small flat plain with a spectacular view. The weather was perfect, and I could see the summit clearly, but it was much farther off in the distance than I had expected.

to bathe in the sun and enjoy lunch, the three of us set out at a brisk pace towards the ridge. What a hike it was. At first, we had planned on reaching the summit, snapping a photo and heading back down the mountain. As it turned out John and Mutaz found a fantastic big flat rock and could not resist the urge to lay and enjoy the sunshine

Calculating that I could not reach the summit and make it back in time to meet the helicopter, I took some photos and took a few moments enjoying the rugged beauty and incredible solitude of this remote point on the earth where I alone stood. The way down was more precarious than I had expected. I had made good time on the way up as my excitement had left little room for any

37 worries. Now, on the way down, the experience seemed much more like a descent than a hike. My thoughts became focused on just how serious a misstep might be. After 30 minutes of exceedingly slow progress, I was becoming just a little concerned about the timing of getting back to John and Mutaz and then trekking down to meet the helicopter. While rounding a bend a few minutes later, I spotted a shepherd tending to his herd on an adjacent ridge. Realizing the locals routinely navigate this hilly terrain increased my confidence and I stepped up the pace. I soon had the steepest part of the climbdown behind me and after a couple of hours, I made it back to the helicopter and found John and Mutaz finishing lunch and happy to see my return. My companions excitedly explained that they had found a small glacial lake. Just a short hike over a hill and I was staring at the clear, cool water formed by snowmelt. John, who had obviously studied the layout, said: “You know, that would be a pretty nice ride down the glacier and only a 7 or 8 feet drop into some plenty deep water; I think we could handle that.” Moments later, John, Mutaz and I were sliding down a glacier and splashing into what I will call “very refreshing” water. After a few rounds of glacial luge, it was just about time to go. Once back at the aircraft, I felt compelled to ask the pilots if they would have picked me up at the top, should I have decided to summit. Much to my surprise, all three of our pilots said “Yes, no big deal” and explained to me that each winter they regularly drop skiers on various peaks in the area. Seeing that I was slightly disappointed that I did not ask them about a summit pick-up before I set off, the lead pilot laughingly said, “I guess you will have to come back for the ski season.” To which I replied, “I will see you then!”

JOURNEY

5 REASONS TO VISIT ZAAMIN Farangiz Salokhojaeva

Uzbekistan widens its touristic area and shows all its beauty to adventure lovers. The cleanest ecology with fresh and healing air is one of the reasons to visit the most beautiful place in Jizzakh – Zaamin Reserve. Exited to go off the bitten track? Then come and experience an unforgettable journey in Zaamin.

1

In Jizzakh, at the height of 3000 meters above the sea level in the mountains, there is a piece of paradise with healing air. Zaamin National Park and Reserve - an area of 10.5 thousand hectares, is known for its unique nature, virgin mountains, spruce groves, healing air, and fragrant medicinal herbs. People come here from all over the world in order to “inhale” and take a break from rush city life. The intoxicating freshness of juniper forests and several hundred species of plants affects the human body miraculously. There is a rest area for tourists which is represented by a sanatorium, dozens of boarding houses, holiday homes, campgrounds, children’s camps, and tent cities. It is cool and fresh even in summer, which is especially pleasing to tourists who are tired of the megacities.

2

“Zaamin” is the sanatorium which is located in the conservation area among the spruce groves at 50 kilometers from the district center, at the height of 2000 meters above sea level. The “climatotherapy” is successfully used there for a long time. Relatively low atmospheric pressure, air saturation with oxygen, ultraviolet rays and abundance of vegetation are favorable for the treatment of diseases of the upper respiratory tract and nervous system.

3

The number of visitors and tourist coming to this area is increasing every year. This place is ideal not only for active recreation but also ecological, cultural and educational tourism. Among the natural sites of the national park, which are in the list of must visit places, there is a seven-hundred-year-old Hazelnut, name of which is “Bobo-yongok”, with two trunks divided by a stream. The height of the tree reaches 20 m, the crown width is 28 m, and the trunk diameter is 2.7 m. The touristic route continues at the small waterfall, at the foot of which there is the curative source «Sher-Bulok», similar to the grotto with stone stairs and arches. There is a chance to taste the water from a bas-relief made in the form of a lion’s head. Hence the name «Sher-Bulok» means «Lion source». Here you can also buy various medicinal herbs and dairy products, and after shopping, you can go to the thousand years old juniper forests and Chortanga canyons in the upper reaches of Ettikechi river.

4

A hiking tour to the Peshagor cave is presented for lovers of speleo-excursions. The cave is located near the Zaamin Nature Reserve in a deep mountain valley between the Takali and Kumbel mountains. There were found various objects of everyday life of primitive man, as well as ancient petroglyphs - rock paintings, which are clearly showing the activities of ancient people such as hunting scenes, etc. The entrance to the cave was formed by the flow of a mountain river several centuries ago. Unusual sheer walls were formed in the cave under the influence of erosion, which eventually creates a special atmosphere.

5

As evidenced by the local history museum, Zaamin is famous not only for its spectacular landscape but for its ancient history too. Preserved monuments of antiquity - the ruins of fortresses and memorials of different epochs, among which «Kurgantepe», «Aktepe», «Turtkultepe», «Kultepe», «Khuzhai Sarob-ota», «Kuk Tunli-ota» and the ancient Myk Fortress (VI-XI cc.) are dilapidated memorials. It is interesting that ancient coins and jewelry are still found on this land. One of the brightest attractions of the Zaamin Reserve is red stones of bizarre shape and gigantic sizes, located on a clearing in KyzylAtaksai. Residents call this natural wonder “kyrkkyz”, which means “forty young ladies”. Many of the memorials have become a place of pilgrimage for believers from around the world.

Sweets of Uzbekistan

Alena Gorbacheva

If you ever been to Uzbekistan, then you must have taken warm memories from this country. Perhaps, like a memory, you may purchase national souvenirs, fabrics, accessories or clothes, but there is no doubt that you will not leave the country not trying the eastern sweets. The first phase of an unforgettable journey through Uzbekistan should start with tasty and delicious assortment. In Uzbekistan, as any kind of conversations and meetings start with a cup of green tea, a hospitable host always considers treating guests with delicious sweets. Besides, merchants in bazaars convince you to taste different cookies, that you

would like to take with you home. The assortment of Uzbek sweets is as big and various as bright colors of culture and customs of all regions in this country. This comparison with culture is not by chance. To be clear, in each corner of the country one specific sweetness might be totally different by shape, taste, recipe that is handled by

generation to generation. However, one thing is still kept unchangeable – all sweets, cookies are cooked only from organic products and pastries, that are healthy and full of energy value. Now, let’s start our gastronomy tour from the list of products that contain flour.

National Uzbek caramel – parvarda which is quite popular among Uzbek people and tourists. The cooking process of this delicatessen is quite long and tough. Firstly, the caramel mass is boiled, which is then beaten and pulled out with frequent motions. After which, all mass is rolled off in the flour, which is followed by making long lines and cutting them into small pillows. The classical parvarda is white in color. Different spices, food coloring, flavoring additives can be added with the request of confectioners. Love of children to the delicacy as pashmak can be explained not only by its specific taste and nutritional value but also by the unique shape, that reminds skein of yarn. Airy flour threads literally melt in your mouth. Fancy crystals of navvat with different colors – from creamy till amber colors attract all our attention. The cooking of navvat is one of the wonderful processes. Hot concentrated sugar syrup is poured into a big plate, on the walls of which the crystal threads are rolled out horizontally that can remind you of a fishing tackle. All sugar is crystalized

and formed tasty rods. Navvat, which consists of pure glucose and fructose, has a heating effect if you drink it with green tea, and certainly, it helps to strengthen the immune system and gives power for the whole body. It is very useful for pregnant women and for people who suffer from anemia. Nishalda is a quite popular sweet product as traditional spring delicate sumalak, which is cooked specially for Navruz (Equinox day) and during Ramadan. This is a thick mass, got from whipped eggs with sugar syrup. This desert is sold in portions by weight and even in cups. The next wonderful sweetness is khalva which is one of the best-known in the world. Different legends and fairytales are told about this product. Khalva is various everywhere. This delicacy in Uzbekistan is cooked with different recipes. The wellknown recipes of khalva are with oil of sunflower, sesame, and nuts. Besides, you may try hard and white khalva mixed with sugar, egg white, oil, honey, flour and so on. Each region has its own special khalva recipe. Dry fruits and nuts are considered to be in the top list of best desserts and snacks, as these products are a generous gift of this land -Uzbekistan. The trade shops in bazaars remind you treasure chests, which are full of gold. All shops are full of different nuts like prunes, raisins, pistachios, almonds, peanuts in a sugar glaze and salty nuts. There are also ready sets with various nuts in an assortment that are very comfortable to buy. To be in Uzbekistan and not try traditional sweets is like to go to the beach and do not swim in the sea. And by the way, you have to forget about diet. Tea with sweets is not the only great tradition in this country, the Uzbek national cuisine is another big story…

Uzbekistan has two famous Ichan Qal’a’s - the one is the ancient town of Khiva Khanate, a live museum under the open sky, and the second is gorgeously designed Baqqol Lounge & Bar restaurant (part of the Ichan Qal’a Premium Class Hotel) that has brought unique medieval architectural vibes to the heart of Tashkent. Why the visitors choose Baqqol Lounge & Bar restaurant? The facility has a number of advantages: starting from serving up an expansive menu of Uzbek and European cuisine with a fine-dining flair to the unique interior in the old-style of the Khiva Khanate. Visitors can dine in either eastern corners with tapchans (Uzbek-style sofas) or the more opulently decorated terrace. We recommend to visit the restaurant and have a nourishing breakfast (starting from 6:30 am.). There’s an impressive selection of business lunches, as well as the À La Carte service offers exceptional and fabulous food options.

One of the most unusual art restaurants in Tashkent - Khanate Manas can rightfully be considered the must-visit location. Everyone who comes to Manas is not just another client, but a long-awaited traveler met with an open heart. The restaurant represents the multifaceted unique culture of Central Asia; guests will be fascinated by traditional national dishes of different countries, and by the decoration of the restaurant that is sort of mixture of ornaments, styles, and objects of art. The vast territory is composed of several halls, all differ from each other with its design and atmosphere: Zindan is stylized as a medieval prison cell serving is a favorite photo zone for visitors; Caravansarai decorated as a real tent of medieval khans; Art Bazaar is a place where artisans create unique products by hand, and visitors can purchase these souvenirs. Furthermore, masterclasses are held regularly for guests who want to create crafts.

Art of Bargaining Astonish Uzbeks with your understanding of culture… Vayjantemala Jabbarova

In Uzbekistan, like in any other country, there are some unwritten rules that are integral to the Uzbek culture. Today we would like to share with you something that could help you leave a nice impression about yourself, as a connoisseur of Eastern values. Uzbekistan has historically been famous for its bazaars and handicrafts hence the art of bargaining is ingrained here from birth.

raders, as they should, want to sell their product for the maximum profit. However, in the Eastern world, there exists a concept called ‘insaf’, which roughly translates to ‘conscience’ in this context. This is something that prevents a Muslim from committing undesirable acts, which is why reasonable traders calculate their profit based on the concept of ‘insaf’. On the other hand, a buyer who doesn’t want to be deceived especially as a tourist in a foreign country should also have ‘insaf’, which means bargaining in such a way that the trader isn’t left unhappy. And here, you may be aided with a very interesting phrase, which every Uzbek knows and uses quite often, it sounds like ‘rozi boling’ or ‘rozimisiz?’, which roughly translates to ‘sincerely accept’ or ‘do you agree (contend) from the heart?’. You should use this phrase once you have completed bargaining and have set the price that you are both satisfied with.

The Uzbeks believe that when negotiating if both parties are happy, then the product or service will serve one well and bring in one’s life positive emotions and consequently. An unsuccessful deal may have a negative impact on the person’s life. Here, as an example we can look at the word ‘tarozi’, which means ‘weighing scale’ in Uzbek and at the root of this word comes ‘rozi’ that is already known to you, so ‘tarozi’ conveys the meaning of the agreement of both sides. Undoubtedly, we all want to balance in our lives and it seems that this desire was known to our ancestors for a long time. It would be logical to assume that this philosophy in trade probably originated during the flourishing times of the Great Silk Road and is firmly established in the Uzbek culture until today.
