MARK HORTON

Mark Horton, a native of Saginaw, Michigan, was raised in Minneapolis. Horton received his law degree at the University of Minnesota in 1979. He began taking studio art classes at the University while practicing law and in 1982 Horton quit his legal practice to paint full time. He and his wife, Barb, lived in Europe for five years where they studied art and painting as they traveled. They returned to the United States in 1989 and now live St. Augustine, Florida. Horton paintings are part of numerous private and public collections including major commissions ifor Securian, the Midwest Express Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Minnesota Department of Transportation, and the Dakota County Historical Society.

ARTIST STATEMENT Almost all my paintings begin with one or two thumbnail sketches. These take a few minutes to draw, but reflect ideas often originating in my studio, surrounded by unfinished work, as I paint. The inchoate idea keeps the threshold low for starting a painting, allowing the idea to unfold on the canvas over months of work. I usually start with one or two colors covering the canvas surface, sometimes indicating sky and ground. Then I paint a few lines that delineate some larger shapes - buildings or a street, for example. This gives me something to respond to and engages me. I like to work on ten to fifteen paintings contemporaneously. I often paint on one for three to five days before setting it aside to work on another. Some paintings are finished sooner than others. As I finish a few, I start a few, stimulated by work in progress as well as by my thumbnail sketches.
