LIFE ON THE MISSISSIPPI

June 18 - July 16, 2022

JAMES CONAWAY

After teaching painting, drawing and ancient art history for 40 years, James Conaway is now a full-time artist with a studio in the Traffic Zone building, a restored 1886 warehouse cooperatively owned and shared by twenty-five Minnesota artists. Jim and his wife, Tomie, have traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Jim has been represented by Groveland Gallery since 1996 and has shown extensively throughout the United States, including group shows at the Walker Art Center, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the Scottsdale Center for the Arts.

ARTIST STATEMENT My home has always been in the cities along the Mississippi River. From suburban St. Louis to Davenport Iowa, and finally Minneapolis in 1967. Since then, my studio has been within two to three blocks of the river. As a dedicated runner and now walker, the riverside is my favorite place and I know it very well. For the last decade, my work has been about the Mississippi River. My paintings are all abstractions painted in my studio from shapes, lines and colors that are stored within my memories of the river. In late 2019, I decided to return to the human figure, which was my favorite subject matter in the 60’s and 70’s. I hired four models and worked with a 4-week schedule for the models in my studio. I also returned to walking around out neighborhood on both sides of the river and Nicollet Island. It was a great inspiration to see more people outside walking and running. It was not long before I started seeing figures in my riverside abstractions. From historic times to the present, the Mississippi River played an important role in the lives of people in Minneapolis. I discovered some of these events in my reading about the Mississippi, which have influenced the paintings in this exhibition.
