MIKE LYNCH
Mike Lynch was born in Hibbing, Minnesota in 1938. Lynch studied painting and drawing with Birney Quick at the Grand Marais Art Colony, attended the Minneapolis School of Art (now MCAD) and also studied at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. A disciplined draftsman known for working in the lonely stillness of night, he exhibited throughout Minnesota, including a solo exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. He was awarded McKnight Foundation Fellowships in 1983, 1987 and 1996, received a Bush Foundation Fellowship in 1985 and the Minnesota State Arts Board Fellowship in 1991. In 2003 Lynch was awarded the prestigious McKnight Distinguished Artist Award. Lynch passed away on September 8, 2023. Mike was an incredibly talented artist whose work influenced many and shaped Groveland Gallery since its early days. He received much acclaim for his work throughout his 70-year career but always distanced himself from the attention.
ABOUT THE COLLECTION Groveland Gallery is pleased to offer a recently acquired group of work by Mike Lynch. This group was part of a private collection and includes examples of his iconic night scenes; stark, quiet and beautiful. We are grateful for the opportunity to offer this collection for sale. A rare complete set of Lynch's 1987 Night Suite, a series of six lithographs, is presented framed and accompanied by its original Landmark Editions documentation and presentation portfolio. The series is being sold as a set. There are also three additional lithographs in the collection, Lamp, Rooms & Apts, and House on the Prairie, a print that is rarely seen available for sale. Door at Night depicts, in deep tonal graphite, stairs leading up to a starkly lit industrial door. Watchtower, Union Railyard and Calumet Elevator focus on sentinel structures seen from a distance, illustrating Lynch's interest in inky darkness and the edge of night. Rooftops, an ink wash, provides a second story view of neighboring houses and leafless trees. Finally, an untitled oil painting depicts train cars at rest in a railyard, a study in shadow and reflection under artificial light.
