ARTIST STATEMENT My spiritual practice is to walk in places where nature is allowed to assert itself. Knowing the land holds stories, I pay attention. Each experience provokes a meditation on nature’s transitory beauty and our vulnerability / responsibility. This selection of work presents drawings of the area below the Twin Cities along the Minnesota River, Dakota homeland, during spring flood. Thoughts about nature’s power to amaze, about knowing a place intimately, about time and history, are active as I walk and as I work in the studio. People tell me the work is beautiful, not an easy beauty but one that includes the ephemeral qualities of light, the ravages of time and effects of human misuse / inattention. They also tell me they use my work to ignite memory, to revisit their own experience. In order to engage in saving our wild places and the multiplicity of ways in which they are crucial, we need awe and pleasure alive within us, to sustain us in continuing what we need to do.

GARY BOWLING

Gary Bowling, a Southwestern Missouri native, returned to his home state in 1981 after a decade of teaching art at Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa. After receiving a fellowship to Yaddo, an artist’s retreat in Saratoga Springs, New York, Gary was encouraged to quit his teaching career and focus his energy on painting. Since then, he has been painting and exhibiting full time. His work has been exhibited across the United States, including shows at the Sheldon Art Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska; Huntington Museum of Art in West Virginia; Mitchell Museum in Mt. Vernon, Illinois; and the Rockford Art Museum. His current studio and residence is in Lamar, Missouri.

ARTIST STATEMENT My paintings have been turning toward landscape as a place where we might escape, but where we also discover we don’t quite belong. I am not talking about places that seem foreboding, frightening or particularly dramatic. Many of the paintings I am working on right now are about a place filled with light, atmosphere and a general ambience that should free my mind of every encumbrance except for the beauty of that kind of place. I am reminded, however, that some of my richest experiences have been in the woods where I wasn’t lost, but just a little disoriented; swimming in the ocean just a little farther out than I thought I was; and hiking under a magnificent sunset and discovering that the trail became a good deal more challenging after dark. For a place to assume a beautiful presence in our experience, it might need some almost imperceptible strangeness that subconsciously keeps us alert.

CHARLES LYON

Before settling in Minnesota in 1994, Charles Lyon spent over a decade living in the high Arizona desert where he taught photography, rock climbing and kayaking. As he developed an interest in color, he set aside black and white photography and began to work in textiles and later, pastels. After his move to Minneapolis, Lyon returned to school to study painting and received his MFA degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1999. In 2005, Lyon was chosen to be an Artist in Residence in Badlands National Park. In 2007, Lyon painted an ornament representing the park for the White House Christmas tree. Lyon was also awarded a 2009 Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board for continued work on his paintings of snow in the city.

ARTIST STATEMENT Traveling by canoe is one of my favorite ways to experience wilderness. Silently gliding over iron-tinged water in the BWCA is deeply satisfying physically and esthetically. The sky and water merge as one gets lost in the rhythm of paddling. But, being wilderness, there are days full of adversity. Wind, rain, and bugs can be as much a part of one’s experience as reflections on the lakes and smells of the moist boreal forest. And it is a humbling experience trying to navigate. Surprisingly, weather has entered my work as I revisit my experiences “up North” as paintings.
