FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S PEN
Entering the fourth quarter...
Welcome back to Term 4 2022, and particularly to new students, families and staff who join us.
It is the final quarter, and the sprint to the finish line. It is a term of intensity – final moments, final farewells, as well as the final opportunities for our Year 12 students to test their current knowledge in an external setting. In all that we do, in school and beyond, how we approach ‘the fourth quarter,’ matters. We choose ‘the how.’ Invariably, throughout the term I will speak about the need for our community, and particularly our exiting seniors, to ‘finish well.’ Finishing well is not about finishing first, it is about finishing with our best effort to ensure wellness for our next effort.
Recently, Dr Katie Murray, coach of our Year 11 Mooting team who made their way to the UniSQ Mooting Final last term, shared her delight in the way Fairholme students see things through to the end. She was musing on the multiple [and competing] balls this particular mooting team were juggling at the time of the final but their ability to complete the job, as if it were the only thing that needed their effort. I loved her description, just as I love seeing girls complete their term, their year, their schooling – well. It is a mark of character.
Renowned education researcher, John Hattie writes of seven core learning dispositions – one of which is about persistence, not giving up in the face of difficulties.
Art Costa’s ‘habits of mind’ also identifies the need for
learners to be persistent. Similarly, Dr David Perkins’ work in the education field talks of learners ‘working at the edge of their competence.’ This is not about working casually in the metaphoric margins but about the pursuit, the journey, and the long game of learning – struggling and persevering until competence is reached. If school terms were to be defined in terms of their unique disposition, then Term 4 could be well-described as the persistence term.
‘As we ‘press-on’ and into this final quarter, may we also find time for the moments of celebration that matter, be they the small turning-points that give hope or the big achievements that sometimes cross our paths...’
Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence … genius will not; education will not. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.’ (Calvin Coolidge, 30th President of the United States)
Our Year 12s commence their external exams on 24 October – and what has seemed like an eternal wait now is reality and has urgency. Consolidation of their learning is best achieved in a school environment where the
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S PEN
opportunity to work with others and their teacher, is precious. For many, there is still some new work to undertake, and for all, new ways of strengthening their existing knowledge and understandings.
We value face-to-face learning and strong attendance underpins that.
For those with a daughter in Middle or Senior School, I trust that you read her report with interest, looking for opportunities to affirm her successes and, if goals were not met, to discuss them with Carole Dweck terminology in mind….
‘So, you have not achieved that level … yet?’ Hopefully, you also noted the whole picture – school attendance, learner attributes, comments, and results – it is the cumulation of this data that yields a more holistic view of how they are travelling in their learning.
Thus, as we ‘press-on’ and into this final quarter, may we also find time for the moments of celebration that matter, be they the small turning-points that give hope or the big achievements that sometimes cross our paths.
I am delighted that some 120 members of our College and local community will join us on the evening of Tuesday 4 October to talk strategically about a future Fairholme – ironically, given discussion of finish lines and end points, this evening is far more about adopting an infinite mindset as we look at the ways in which Fairholme can continue to ‘flourish and abound’ long into the future, when its current ‘players’ are no longer on the field.
Finally, I look forward to the term ahead as always – the infinite possibilities, along with the tangible end points that allow for reflection and celebration.
I hope to cross paths with you, as we go, possibly at the Spring Fair, Presenting Fairholme occasion, Valedictory Dinner, Senior Leaders’ Induction …
Let us be persistent in finishing well.
ROAD SAFETY ‘STARTS WITH [US]’
We have been advised by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) that a world-first road safety initiative, involving new speed camera technology will soon be targeting speeding drivers at selected school zones across Queensland.
This will involve speed cameras being deployed in flashing school zone signs at a number of schools during school zone times, at the schools chosen as part of the pilot.
As we know intellectually, it is imperative for drivers to reduce their speed to the signed 40 km/h limit and be aware of activity by students on or near the road. After all, speeding continues to be one of the main contributing factors in deaths and serious injuries on our roads. We also know that school children are among our most vulnerable road users. Should Fairholme be selected as a pilot school – I would be delighted if we were so, then additional signage will be installed prior, advising of fortified speed camera enforcement in the area. The important message of Queensland Road Safety Week this year is that ‘road safety starts with me’.
We do all have a role in keeping our roads safe and at schools, and to be extra vigilant both outside the gates and within. Thank you for supporting our students to arrive and depart from the College, safely.
Dr Linda Evans | PrincipalStaffing update
We welcome Mrs Fran Brazier, Mrs Deb Cochran and Mr Peter Webb who return from leave – no doubt refreshed and ready for the quick run to the finish line.
Teachers, Arlie Hollindale and Rohan Davis and Boarding Supervisor, Michelle Jackson are on Long Service Leave for the term. Ms Katrina Maher will also take some Long Service Leave in the final weeks. In Ms Hollindale’s absence, Mrs Laura Anderson will continue as our Careers Specialist and oversee the Pathways Centre this term, necessitating her to step back from her Head of Stephens House role and teacher of Year 11 Psychology for that time.

When did you start at Fairholme?
I’ve been here since Grade 7 and what I’ve loved about Fairholme is growing up with my cohort has been amazing. I still remember my first day in the New Chapel and now here I am leading the school.
How long have you been in Australia for?
We came in 2008. We are one of the first of our family to come to Australia and the reason we moved was because my parents wanted me and my brothers to have access to a better education and lifestyle.
Describe the feeling when your name was announced as Head Girl?
I honestly couldn’t believe it when Dr Evans announced my name, the support was overwhelming. It made me so happy. Going home and telling my parents was really exciting, they were so proud of me and it made me feel so good because they have made so many sacrifices for me. We facetimed my brothers and they were really happy for me too.
Why did you want to be Head Girl?
Ever since I was younger, I’ve always dreamed about being a leader for the young girls and being Head Girl would be a great platform to reach out to everyone. What are your aspirations for 2023?
My main thing that I have said continuously is
approachability and I want to connect the Junior School girls with the Middle/Senior School girls. I want the Junior girls to know who their Seniors are and that we aren’t scary and they can talk to us any time.
What are your hobbies?
Outside of school I play a lot of soccer, I play for the Toowoomba Thunder and I also love listening to music.
What is something that some may not know about you?
Oh I tell people everything so there probably isn’t much (laugh) but maybe that I will be the third generation to study Medicine in our family.
My eldest brother is studying at University of Queensland and my other brother is studying at Monash University.
Why Medicine?
Looking back in Year 4, we had to write down what we wanted to be when we grow up and I wrote down, ‘I want to be a Dr’. I also remember having the conversation with my Grade 2 teacher and she said ‘will you be my Dr when I get older and I was like yes I would love to be your Dr.’ Just that idea of helping people and giving assistance is so important to me.
What are you looking forward to in Year 12?
Formal! But also, all the little traditions, the year 12 common room, and the Assemblies we get to run.
Holiday news
DOUBLES CHAMPION
Alexandra Edwards won the 14U Girls Queensland Doubles Tennis Championship at the 2022 Queensland State Age Tennis Championships with her doubles partner from Cairns. The girls went through undefeated and didn’t lose a set during the whole tournament.
Alexandra also finished 3rd in the 14U Girls Queensland Singles Main Draw.
Alex will travel to Central Victoria this weekend to represent Queensland in the 2022 Australian Schools Orienteering Championships.
SONY CAMP
Congratulations to all Year 11 and 12 students who were involved in this year’s three-day Sony Camp, under the support and guidance of Mrs Kylie Wallis and Ms Sarah Campbell. This is an important community service activity, one that allows our girls to work alongside student guests with a verified disability.
It is a mark of our students that we are always oversubscribed with applications to be involved, unfortunately there are number limitations.
We are grateful to Toowoomba Grammar for their ongoing commitment as host school.
COMPETING FOR QUEENSLAND
Well done to Addi Attrill for her exceptional performance at the National All Schools Aquathon Championships. Competing with pride for Queensland, Addi placed 12th with a personal best time.

Our Equestrian Team competed at the National Interschool State Championships in Sydney Showgrounds during the holiday period.
Fairholme was well-represented with a number of riders selected across the disciplines. Ten riders chose to compete at the Australian Interschool Championships at Sydney International Equestrian Centre in September.

The other riders who have made the journey are Torra MacDonald (Combined Training Captain), Simone Sorensen (Show Jumping Vice Captain), Lottie Ostwald, Kaida MacDonald, Annabelle Rogan, Geneva Searle, Georgie Hill, Bella Ostwald and Josie Ostwald.
