Two Positions as Research Scientists The Division of Oceanography at the Research Department seeks two research scientists to strengthen the expertise of our group in the fields mentioned below. The model simulations in both projects will be carried out on super computers. 1. Sea-ice numerical modelling (reference number 2344). To increase the safety of winter navigation in dynamic ice conditions in present and future climates an existing coupled multi-category sea-ice – ocean model applied for the Baltic Sea will be further developed. The sea-ice model resolves the ice thickness distribution, i.e. ice concentrations of variable thickness categories, redistribution of ice categories due to deformations, thermodynamics of sea-ice, horizontal components of ice velocity and internal stress of the ice pack. The multi-category sea-ice model consists of four undeformed and two deformed (rafted and ridged) sea-ice categories. The position is part of an ongoing EU project which aims to develop an efficient ice dynamics forecasting system. The compression within the ice pack and its variability on daily to multi-annual time scales will be studied. Future ice conditions will be estimated from an ensemble of scenario simulations for the period 1960-2100. The position is initially limited in time (23 months). 2. Regional paleoclimate modelling (reference number 2345). An existing coupled physical-biogeochemical model for the Baltic Sea will be used to assess climate variability of the past 1000 years and to compare the results with scenario simulations of the 21st century. Proxy reconstructions will be compared to results from model simulations. The model will be used to provide selected scenarios of the impact of naturally and human induced climate change on the Baltic Sea ecosystem. The present model describes mainly the dynamics of the nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus, three groups of phytoplankton and oxygen and the model sediment includes process descriptions for nutrient regeneration as well as denitrification and permanent burial of nutrients. A wave-model and wave-current interaction is used to improve the simulation of horizontal transports of organic nutrients due to sediment resuspension. The position is initially limited in time (12 months). Successful candidates will have the possibility to contribute to international projects and networks, such as the BONUS+ program. You should have • demonstrated experience on ocean research, preferably with a PhD in oceanography, meteorology, mathematics, physics or in a related field. • good programming skills, • familiarity with Linux and Fortran90, and preferably MPI (message passing interface), • experience on numerical modelling, • good oral and written command of the English language. Good organization and communication skills are requested. You should be able to work on own initiative and be able to prioritise. The contracts are initially limited to maximum 12 and 23 months but might be prolonged depending on the future funding situation. .
