Colorful Tucan Wonders of Nature Toucan is tropical bird, best known by its large, colorful bill. There are 40 different species of toucans that are widely distributed in Mexico, Central America, South America, and Caribbean. Illegal pet trade is the greatest threat for the survival of toucans in the wild. Luckily, population of toucans is still large and stable and these birds are not on the list of endangered species. Both males and females have large, brightly colored bills that can reach 8 inches in length. Despite its large size, bill has low mass because it is made of keratin (same substance that builds hair and nails of mammals). Also, bill has numerous air pockets which additionally decrease its weight. Toucan can regulate body temperature using its bill.Increased circulation of blood through the bill helps in elimination of excess body heat.

Bill has several purposes. It is used for gathering and peeling of the fruit, for intimidation of the predators and for attracting mating partners (length of the bill plays role in the selection of the mating partners). Toucan has long tongue (same length as the bill). Tongue is mostly used as an organ of taste, but it also helps in catching of the insects. Toucan is an omnivore (animal which eats other animals and plants). Its diet is mainly based on fruit. Besides fruit, toucan eats berries, seeds, eggs and insects. Toucans spend most of their life high in the treetops. Sharp claws and curved toes ensure stability on the branches. When bird needs to change the location, it will jump from one branch to another. Toucans have short wings and they don't like to fly. When they need to leave the safety of trees, they will glide through the air and travel small distances.

Hidden JacĂł Treasure Super friendly and helpful staff. Lovely views from the rooftop. Great pool, good food, 30 secs to sweet waves. The rooms are bright, airy, modern and clean. We had a double room on the third floor and had a gorgeous view of the sea to wake up to. The staff was amazing, the food was incredible, the location was perfect, the owner was very accommodating. 2643-4949

Morgan’s Cove Offering free Wi-Fi, the bright, relaxed rooms also have safes and cable TV, as well as terraces or balconies with views of the pool or the gardens. The resort has an open-air restaurant and an outdoor pool featuring a sundeck and a swim-up bar. The casino features a lively sports bar, and offers slot machines, card games and roulette. Many other amenities including direct beach access. 2643-3147

Jaco Lodge www.jacolodge.com This place is a great place a little piece of paradise just minutes walk from the beach and thr town. Just far enough that it's quiet at night. Has banana & papaya trees and a nice pool. Just awesome & the price is great. I stayed somewhere else and paid more for less. Also no problem with my 60lb service dog. Owner is super nice and very helpful. 2643-4453

Mango Mar www.hotelmangomar.com The hotel is far enough away from the main street that your sleep is not disturbed by any of the activities on the main drive. Claritas Beach Grill & Hotel The sound of the surf is very therapeutic. I have stayed at Claritas for three seasons in a row, and appreciate how the staff makes me feel welcome and at home at the hotel and beach bar. The rooms are simple and comfortable, and the location on a quiet end of the beach is lovely. I had to do some work in the mornings, and as I typed away at my laptop my view was of the ocean. My friends and I attended the wednesday party and cuty contest, and everyone was ready to party. The pool is a great place to relax and throw parties as well. Room Tip: The second floor rooms are best.

South Beach www.hotelsouthbeachjaco.com This is a nice, quaint hotel at the south end of Jac贸 beach, far from crowds, and with a direct access to beach. Friendly, good food, great pool and lots of beach. Good food and nice people that run the place. Have the pasta with seafood and cream sauce! The 5 star aspect of this hotel is undoubtedly the staff: they were beyond accommodating and welcoming, always super friendly and helpful. Jac贸 Beach Municipal Palace 600 Mts South | Tel: 2643-3419

Villa Caletas www.hotelvillacaletas.com This is what vacation should always look like; great location, facilities & staff. The hotel is beautifully designed and it maintained with great care. The sunsets are amazing, but the best activity is just hanging in the infinity pool with a cocktail in hand, looking out over the pacific. The location is close (driving time) to San Jose, but really another world. And so much better, different from any of the other alternatives in the Jac贸 area. Costa Rica has many beautiful places. This one allows you comfort, elegance, and still the feeling of enjoying nature and the surroundings. 2 km after Punta Leona Herradura. Tel: 2630-3000

Villa Creole www.hotelvillacreole.com This charming little hotel is in a nice, quiet neighbourhood. The owners are friendly and helpful. We were quite early for checkin, but the quickly accommodated. The owners, Nicholas and Jenny are real friendly, informative and friendly. If you need help, ask them. The pool is great, large, warm and very relaxing. The property is gorgeous. The breakfast is excellent, and the grounds are beautiful. It's a bit of a walk to Main Street, but if you want quiet and security... Calle Europa, 20, Jac贸. | Tel: 2643-5151

Tuanis Aparthotel www.hoteltuanisjacobeach.com I walked into the office and was warmly greeted by Ricky, the owner of the establishment. He said he would show me his lowest price room and we could work our way up from there. I stepped into the room and immediately said, "This will work!". I was so relieved to see how spacious it was. Nice large flat screen, A/C, hot water shower, fast in-room wifi, and SUPER clean. It also had a pool that my son thoroughly enjoyed after a hot day at the beach less than a block away. Ricky is very friendly and helpful in every way. Couldn't ask for a better place at a better price. All the amenities you could want and the hotel is run completely on solar power! Very cool.

Room Tip: Ricky also showed me a 2 bedroom apartment that was knock your socks off nice! Tel: 2643-2094 | By Platinium Gym

Gelato Lounge

Marsican Tastfully Engaged! Marsican Gelato opened its doors in 2014 and carries it's name after a type of critically endangered Italian brown bear. The owner Sarka Peri, found her real passion in handcrafting artisan gelato from scratch starting on a small home machine. Originally graphic designer, she loves to create and decorate new flavors based mostly on local ingredients. Among exceptions are pure pistachio and hazelnut which as she experienced are a must in good Italian gelaterias. Marsican flavors are made from traditional and natural ingredients which gives Marsican gelato and sorbets real flavor and premium quality.

Combined Flavors!

Sarka loves to visit an inspiring hub for her field, native Europe. Her last visit involved gelato festival in Florence where she tasted supposedly the best gelato in Italy. Marsican Gelato shop has original design including 1970's Vespa and is placed in downtown Jacó. Besides gelato, you can taste affogato, delicious combination of espresso and gelato or just a cup of great cappuccino or brownie... You won’t regret it! Located in el Mall Il Galeone Deliciously recomended!

From northwest to southwest, Costa Rica measures only 285 miles (460 km) and at its narrowest, it is only 74 miles (120 km) wide. It is smaller than Lake Michigan. In 1539, officials in Panama used the name Costa Rica (Rich Coast) for the first time to distinguish the territory between Panama and Nicaragua. On September 8, 1502, Christopher Columbus became the first European recorded to land in Costa Rica. He took refuge just off the coast between tiny Uvita Island and the current port of Limón. Costa Ricans claim that Dr. Clodomiro “Clorito” Picado discovered the properties of penicillin before Dr. Alexander Fleming, based on a paper Dr. Picado had published in 1927 on how penicillin inhibited the growth of streptococcus in his patients. Costa Rica has a 96% literacy rate. For rural areas where children can’t make it to school, lessons are taught over a national radio station. Native Costa Ricans call themselves Ticos and Ticas. Costa Rican women keep their maiden names Costa Rican women do not take their husbands’ last name when they get married. They keep their maiden name for life along with their mother’s maiden name. In Costa Rica, nearly all Catholic churches face west. Coffee was introduced to Costa Rica from Jamaica in 1779. Called the grano de oro (grain of gold), coffee was Costa Rica’s foremost export for 150 years until tourism surpassed it in 1991. More than 247,104 acres of coffee are planted in Costa Rica, making it the 13th largest coffee exporter in the world. A common phrase used after a Costa Rican woman has a baby is "Ella dio luz," meaning literally “She gave light.”

Crocodile Bridge

Stop for a cold beer!

While violent crime is rare, petty theft, especially from tourists is common. The most likely places for things disappear from are cars (locked or not), beaches, bus luggage compartments, and hotel rooms. Leave your valuables at home. If you don’t bring it you don’t have to worry about it. If you have to bring it leave it locked up. Making ID copy is a great idea to walk around with.

On your way to Jacó, stop at tarcoles bridge. There is a small restaurant on the left handside. (the coldest beer available on earth) From the bridge you can see many salt water crocs, sunbathing. Watch out for ongoing traffic. Don’t fall, be safe and enjoy. This whole area is definitely worth a stop.

USE SUNBLOCK!

Bring your ID at bank In order to change money, you will be ask for your ID or Passport, bring some patience too. The laidback and easygoing pace is what you'll love, but here it is the same. So keep that in mind when traveling and just try to relax.

SPF 25 or higher very recommended, and use it! Don't ruin your vacation with a bad sunburn.

Miro’s Terrace Locally known as Cero Fresco. A local attraction in the south side of Jacó. A uphill track that leads tostunning terraces, offering panoramic views of the Jacó Bay. Miro’s Mountain is a perfect choice for every adventurer - as long as they’re prepared. Bring good shoes, sunblock, and water. Enjoy the views!

The ceviche was hands down some of the best I've had; with large pieces of fish as well as avocado. I suggest the whole grouper (amazing) accompanied by an ice cold Imperial. The family run business is a testament to the dynamic of good friends and good food. Can't wait to return.

Like Eskimos with their 57 words for snow, Costa Ricans have at least a dozen terms for rain—from drizzly pelo de gato (cat hair) to a baldazo or aguacero (downpour) and a temporal (heavy rain falling for several days without letting up during the rainy season). The heavy amounts of rain give Costa Rica more rivers and a higher volume of water for a country of its size than any other nation except for New Zealand. Instead of saying “my other half,” Costa Ricans refer to their significant others as their “media naranja,” or “the other half of the orange.” Costa Rican currency is officially called the colón, but Costa Ricans often use the word harina (flour) to refer to their money. Costa Rican Catadores, or tasters, decide which coffees to buy and are as important as wine tasters are in France. They train for five years to learn exactly how to slurp the coffee off a spoon onto their taste buds, and they taste it cold—a good coffee should taste just as good cold as hot. Bri Bri is the one indigenous language still spoken in Costa Rica. The name fer-de-lance, means “lance head" Costa Rica's deadliest snake is the ground-dwelling fer-de-lance, a 1.3-foot-long pit viper that accounts for more than 80% of the country's fatal snake bites. Costa Rica is the second largest exporter of bananas in the world after Ecuador. According to Costa Rican legend, the liquid inside the pipa (fresh, green coconut) is pure enough to be used as plasma in an emergency situation. In Costa Rica, a discoteca is a nightclub, and a nightclub is actually a strip club. In Costa Rica, speed bumps are called son muertos, or dead persons.

For anyone who wants to leave the pavement, see the mountain view, and have a great time - make sure you find your way here while visiting or passing through Jacó! You get some appetizers like crispy chicharrones or yucca salad and pico de gallo. The typical “arroz con pollo” served with a salad and French fries, or the typical Casado, so colorful. Kids and Familly... love the place!! From the Teleférico 200 meters East. Turn right and Up Hill, follow the signs. Call: 8405 9364 / FaceBook: Bar El Tajo

$3 Breakfast Specials Tuesday to Sunday 7am. to 11am.

Taco Bar

Best Breakfast in town Tacobar is a fun open-air restaurant at the center of JacĂł, with swings instead of bar seats and an all-you-can-eat salad bar. The tacos are fantastic, the salad bar is huge and the homemade chocolate brownie is mouthwatering. Tacobar is best known for their fresh fish tacos, you can choose between Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, Snapper, smoked Salmon, shrimp, calamari, beef, chicken and veggie.

Mono Verde

Bar and Grill

Absolutely LOVE Mono Verde! Been so good for years. The margaritas are awesome, and the staff is the best! The food is outstanding - the stuffed avocado appetizer is so good. I am not necessarily a avocado guy - until now!! Service is professional, prices are reasonable considering the nicely appointed dining area and the quality/freshness of the food. Great dĂŠcor and the air conditioned area was our preference considering the warm weather. Highly recommended by locals

Not a big taco fan? Try their irresistible pizzas, homemade hummus, giant burritos and baked potatoes prepared in a verity of gravies. The staff is bi-lingual and super friendly. They also have a kids menu. Available Tuesday-Sunday 7:00am-11:00am [Closed Monday mornings] Tel: 2643-0222 www.Tacobar.info

Great place to gamble. The most like a Las Vegas casino with Blackjack and craps along a few of the other card games. It wasn't crowded on Thursday night, much more people on Friday night. Some great restaurant on 1st floor, good food, cozy ambiance.

Get to see many types of birds and crocs up close and personal. Each croc is nicknamed and comes with a "personality perspective". The tour boat driver even gets out of the boat and feeds the crocs... and yes more up close and personal then any of us would do! www.crocodiletour.com Tel: 2637-0795

I wore water shoes the whole time and was glad I did, its a rocky terrain. Slide down the waterfall and slide thing into the pond too! It was really fun and totally worth it. All in One Excelente Experience. Go Have some fun!

A “must do” Tour in Tarcoles River If it's crocodiles you want to see, then Jose is the guy who can find and feature them for you. He has named the crocs on the Tarcoles River and introduces them individually as they approach. Osama Bin Laden, a monster who often hides, measures between 19' and 21'. Once found, he allows Jose to lift his tail to the edge of the boat, where you can inspect and help hold the tail. If you dare that is... He speaks English and Spanish. He has a great sense of humour and is very informative.

Croc’s Facts · Crocodiles can live up to 80 years! · The first crocodiles appeared 240 million years ago, at the same time with the dinosaurs (to which they are related). · Crocodiles can swim just with the help of their powerful tail with 40 km (25 mi) per hour, and can stand underwater 2-3 hours.

Do this tour if possible, going on a hight tide, and close to sunset.

Best Guides ever. Very safe and informative. Fantastic uphill hike through the rain forest where we actually tasted some plants along the way. After the hike is a thorough orientation to rappelling with a short practice run. Then it's a short zip and your first rappel from a platform down to the top of the falls. This adventure is the real deal. You rappel down the falls right in the center of the falls with water gushing between your legs and all around you. Totally exhilarating. Then there's a monkey drop which will make you scream for sure. After that a short zip followed by the final 1/2 mile zip to base.

74

The guides then provide you with tasty fresh pineapple and lemonade at the base. Guides are patient, caring and FUN! This trip is highly recommend!!!

It might not feel like it, but they are all trainned as professionals. The canopy tour is fun and fast.. A great thrill !! You really feel like you are on the top of the world. You will luckly get to see beautiful scarlet macaws flying beneath you as you zipped through the course. The Vista people have a photogragher who will take good quality photos of you while you are zip lining. They also provided fresh fruit and cold water at the end of the trek. No wonder why the are first in the Trip advisor.

Costa Rica's Escazú is famous for witchcraft where, historically, people took to mountain caves to secretly practice their religious and magical rituals. Despite being a rich suburb of San José, brujas (witches) can still be found, offering readings of tarot cards and a whole range of “other services.” The annual Carrera de Campo Traviesa Al Cerro Chirripó is a race to the top of Costa Rica’s highest mountain and back. To date, the record time is 3 hours, 15 minutes, and 3 seconds. Guaro, moonshine rum made from distilled sugar cane, is Costa Rica’s indigenous spirit. Cacique is the best brand of guaro, and most people mix guaro with Coca-Cola or Sprite. It is believed that Costa Rica was the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s, Treasure Island Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island is thought to be modeled on Costa Rica's Isla del Coco. Many famous pirates and privateers such as Sir Francis Drake, Captain Edward Davis, William Dampier, and Mary Welch visited the Costa Rican island. Allegedly, they left troves of buried loot, although treasure hunters over the centuries have failed to discover more than a smattering of the purported bounty. Costa Rica abolished its armed forces in 1949 and has no standing military. However, the country still maintains a small force to enforce laws and assist with foreign peacekeeping. Costa Rica’s national symbol is the clay-colored robin known as the yigüirro. Costa Rica’s largest body of freshwater is the manmade Lake Arenal. Arenal Volcano is the most active volcano in Costa Rica and one of the most active in the world. In 1968, Arenal erupted and destroyed the town of Tabacón. It last erupted in 2010. Arenal is the most active and youngest of all the volcanoes in Costa Rica

Ollie’s Point in northeastern Costa Rica was named after American Colonel Oliver North, the famous and felonious former lieutenant colonel at the center of the 1980s Iran-Contra scandal. The beaches and ports of northern Guanacaste like Ollie’s Point were a staging ground for supplying the Nicaraguan Contra rebels. Legend has it that during a news broadcast of an interview with North, some surfers noticed a fabulous point break going off in the background. Hence, the discovery and naming of Ollie’s Point. Each year, Costa Rica hosts what many consider to be the most grueling and challenging mountain bike race on the planet, La Ruta de los Conquistadores (Route of the Conquerors), which retraces the path of the 16th-century Spanish conquistadors from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea—all in 4 days. The race takes place in November and draws hundreds of competitors from around the world. The sun rises and sets in Costa Rica at the same time every day 365 days a year, due to its close proximity to the equator. The Guanacaste (Enterolobium cyclocarpum) is Costa Rica’s national tree. The distinctive tree is known for its broad, full crown, which provides welcome shade on the Guanacaste’s hot plains and savannahs. The tree is also known as the elephant-ear tree because of the distinctive shape of its large seedpods. The province of Guanacaste is named for the tree. In the sleepy town of Manzanillo, Costa Rica, there is a thoroughfare called Mista Cracker Jack Street. Other streets are named after old citizens who have passed on, and Manzanillans call their cemetery “the Ole Buryground.” In 1995, a group of Costa Ricans residing in Nicaragua near the border established the Republic of Airrecú, named for the Maleku Indian word for friendship. The 170-square mile (440-sq km) nation was formed from the belief that the area was mistakenly ceded to Nicaragua, and their president, Augusto Rodríguez, presented documentation on behalf of their claim to the United Nations. Even though Nicaragua has refused to allow the 5,000 residents of Airrecú to secede, the Airrecú movement continues, and they even have a flag and an anthem. The single largest factor affecting Costa Rica’s economy is its national debt. In 1981, the country was the first in the world to default on its loans.
