Olive Ridley Sea turtles

Protect Nature

Did you know? One of the lesser-known destinations for sea turtle nesting in Costa Rica is Hermosa Beach. Green sea turtles can stay under water for as long as five hours even though the length of a feeding dive is usually five minutes or less. Their heart rate slows to conserve oxygen: nine minutes may elapse between heartbeats.

The fine black sand of Hermosa Beach, south of Jaco on the Central Pacific coast, is a popular nesting ground for olive ridley sea turtles. Nesting night tours can be arranged with a naturalist guide. About 45 days after incubation, the baby sea turtles that have survived begin to hatch and make a mad dash toward the ocean to avoid their predators.

When to visit for Olive Ridley sea turtles: July – December Sea turtles are one of the Earth's most ancient creatures. The seven species that can be found today have been around for 110 million years, since the time of the dinosaurs. The sea turtle's shell, or "carapace" is streamlined for swimming through the water. Unlike other turtles, sea turtles cannot retract their legs and head into their shells. Their color varies between yellow, greenish and black depending on the species.

Diet What sea turtles eat depends on the subspecies, but some common items include jellyfish, seaweed, crabs, shrimp, sponges, snails, algae and mollusks. Population It is difficult to find population numbers for sea turtles because male and juvenile sea turtles do not return to shore once they hatch and reach the ocean, which makes it hard to keep track of them.

Behavior Sea turtles, like salmon, will return to the same nesting grounds at which they were born. When females come to the shore they dig out a nest in the ground with their back flippers, bury their clutch of eggs and return to the ocean. After hatching, the young may take as long as a week to dig themselves out of the nest. They emerge at night, move toward the ocean and remain there, solitary, until it is time to mate.

Jaco beach Lifeguards Marvin Perez, Chief of the Jaco Beach Lifeguard. Great waterman and coordinator of the new body of Lifeguards which operates today... Lifeguard & Water Safety Training are taught by industry leaders, and it’s Red Cross Lifeguarding course materials have been developed under the guidance of the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council. Being “on duty” is a respect to mother nature, using knowledge, and making a difference for visitors and familly. Welcome to Jacó.

Enjoy the beach

Lifeguard & Safety What is a rip current? Riptides are found at a number of beaches in Costa Rica, especially the surfing hotspots. Of course, the best way to avoid a riptide is to stay away from the sea, but if you’re an avid surfer eager to catch your next big Costa Rica surf breaks, that’s easier said than done. Although the most popular beaches Jaco, enjoy the vigilance of lifeguards, there are many that do not. Be really Carefull. Never be drunk in the surf, or go after a heavy meal. Don’t assume that because you can see people swimming in the sea, it’s safe. Costa Rica water safety tips are extraordinarily important to your welfare while enjoying your family vacation in paradise. If you plan on swimming at any of the breathtaking Costa Rica beaches, it’s imperative to know how to handle yourself in rough water and rip tides, just in case. Rip currents are at their strongest during high tide, and you can sometimes spot them from the Costa Rica shoreline. They look very much like a muddy stream. The incoming waves create an underwater sandbar close to the shoreline. If any part of the sandbar collapses, water is pushed through the gap, creating a strong and narrow current which essentially drags everything out to sea. This narrow channel of water is rarely more than 30 meters wide.

Remember 1. Don’t Panic! 2. You should never try to swim back to shore if you get caught in a riptide. 3. Try to regain your footing,if possible, but don’t put up too much of a struggle, you’ll need your energy to stay afloat. 4. Lie on your back and float, pushing your hips and face out of the water. 5. Expect to be dragged out for one hundred to two hundred meters. Remember that a riptide will not drag you under water. It will drag you out to sea. 6. You’ll notice that the current weakens and you will be able to calmly swim parallel to the shoreline, which will let you escape the riptide. Photos: Jorge Russel Illustrations:NOAA's Ocean Service

“Buen Provecho” in Costa Rica

Local Foods > Info Jaco

The most common dish for breakfast is Gallo Pinto which consists of rice mixed with black beans, served with natilla (sour cream), eggs (scrambled) and fried plantain. Costa Ricans usually drink a cup of coffee or fresh fruit juice with it. For lunch,Casados (beans, rice) are served with some sort of meat or fish and a salad, fried plantains, white cheese and corn tortilla.

The difference between Gallo Pinto and Casado is that in Casados, rice and the bean are served side by side and not mixed. There is no typical meal for dinner, but another typical main dish in Costa Rica is arroz con pollo (rice with chicken) which can be served with different vegetables from the area like camote, chayote and yuca. Seafood is also common thanks to the country’s proximity to both the Pacific and Caribbean.

Solo Locales Gallo Pinto · Arroz con Pollo · Beef Tamales · Chorreadas · Sopa Negra · Arroz con Leche · Tres Leche ·

Small dishes before or in between meals are called Bocas, like black bean dip, chimichurri (tomatoes and onions in lime juice) served with tortilla chips or ceviche (fish/ shrimp with onion in lime juice). Tamale is a seasoned corn meal which is covered in plantains leaves. In the inside it has rice, beans, vegetables and meat. There are also other traditional sweet corn dishes like pozol (corn soup) or chorreadas (corn pancakes). Typical soups in Costa Rica are also very popular, such as olla de carne which is a soup with beef,

potatoes, carrots, chayote, plantains and yucca, and the sopa negra, black bean soup. There are a lot of traditional Costa Rican desserts like arroz con leche (rice with milk). The rice is cooked in milk with sugar, cinnamon and other ingredients. Ensalada de frutas (fruit salad) consists of different pieces of tropical fruits, like papaya, banana, maracuya and many more. One of the most common desserts is calledTres Leches,a cake bathed in evaporated, condensed and regular milk with a whipped cream top.

Claritas Beach Grill & Hotel The sound of the surf is very therapeutic. I have stayed at Claritas for three seasons in a row, and appreciate how the staff makes me feel welcome and at home at the hotel and beach bar. The rooms are simple and comfortable, and the location on a quiet end of the beach is lovely. I had to do some work in the mornings, and as I typed away at my laptop my view was of the ocean. My friends and I attended the wednesday party and cuty contest, and everyone was ready to party. The pool is a great place to relax and throw parties as well. Room Tip: The second floor rooms are best.

Villa Caletas www.hotelvillacaletas.com This is what vacation should always look like; great location, facilities & staff. The hotel is beautifully designed and it maintained with great care. The sunsets are amazing, but the best activity is just hanging in the infinity pool with a cocktail in hand, looking out over the pacific. The location is close (driving time) to San Jose, but really another world. And so much better, different from any of the other alternatives in the Jac贸 area. Costa Rica has many beautiful places. Gelato Lounge

Marsican Tastfully Engaged! Marsican Gelato opened its doors in 2014 and carries it's name after a type of critically endangered Italian brown bear. The owner Sarka Peri, found her real passion in handcrafting artisan gelato from scratch starting on a small home machine. Originally graphic designer, she loves to create and decorate new flavors based mostly on local ingredients. Among exceptions are pure pistachio and hazelnut which as she experienced are a must in good Italian gelaterias. Marsican flavors are made from traditional and natural ingredients which gives Marsican gelato and sorbets real flavor and premium quality.

Combined Flavors!

Sarka loves to visit an inspiring hub for her field, native Europe. Her last visit involved gelato festival in Florence where she tasted supposedly the best gelato in Italy. Marsican Gelato shop has original design including 1970's Vespa and is placed in downtown Jacó. Besides gelato, you can taste affogato, delicious combination of espresso and gelato or just a cup of great cappuccino or brownie... You won’t regret it! 1. Costa Ricans call themselves ticos (males) and ticas (females). 2. It’s not a big deal to see someone walking around with a machete. Although it’s more common in the countryside, ticos use machetes for everything and often keep one on them. They’re considered the Costa Rican equivalent of duct tape. 3. Costa Rica is only slightly smaller than Lake Michigan. And has 801 miles of coastline. 4. Ticos often refer to their significant others as their “media naranja”. Which means “the other half of their orange.” 5. Costa Rica’s president, Luis Guillermo Solís, won the 2014 election with over 77% of the vote. This was the largest margin ever recorded for a free election in Costa Rica. Previously, Costa Rica’s president was Laura Chinchilla, Costa Rica’s first female president and sixth female elected for president of a Latin American country. 6. Costa Rica has more than 121 volcanic formations, with seven of them being active. 7. The country is host to more than 5% of the world’s biodiversity. Even though its landmass only takes up .03% of the planet’s surface, more than 10% of the world’s butterflies live here — there are about 750,000 species of insects that live in Costa Rica, and 20,000 various kinds of spiders. 8. Costa Rica has no standing army. They abolished the army in 1948 after their last civil war ended. 9. Costa Rican women don’t take their husband’s last name. And instead use their full maiden name for life. Children take their father’s name but add their mother’s maiden name to their full name.

Stop for a cold beer!

While violent crime is rare, petty theft, especially from tourists is common. The most likely places for things disappear from are cars (locked or not), beaches, bus luggage compartments, and hotel rooms. Leave your valuables at home. If you don’t bring it you don’t have to worry about it. If you have to bring it leave it locked up. Making ID copy is a great idea to walk around with.

On your way to Jacó, stop at tarcoles bridge. There is a small restaurant on the left handside. (the coldest beer available on earth) From the bridge you can see many salt water crocs, sunbathing. Watch out for ongoing traffic. Don’t fall, be safe and enjoy. This whole area is definitely worth a stop.

USE SUNBLOCK!

Bring your ID at bank In order to change money, you will be ask for your ID or Passport, bring some patience too. The laidback and easygoing pace is what you'll love, but here it is the same. So keep that in mind when traveling and just try to relax.

SPF 25 or higher very recommended, and use it! Don't ruin your vacation with a bad sunburn.

Miro’s Terrace Locally known as Cero Fresco. A local attraction in the south side of Jacó. A uphill track that leads tostunning terraces, offering panoramic views of the Jacó Bay. Miro’s Mountain is a perfect choice for every adventurer - as long as they’re prepared. Bring good shoes, sunblock, and water. Enjoy the views!

Absolutely LOVE Mono Verde! Been so good for years. The margaritas are awesome, and the staff is the best! The food is outstanding - the stuffed avocado appetizer is so good. I am not necessarily a avocado guy - until now!! Service is professional, prices are reasonable considering the nicely appointed dining area and the quality/freshness of the food. Great décor and the air conditioned area was our preference considering the warm weather. Highly recommended by locals

Amazing Experience Nice and Spicy Food !!!

Jerah Restaurant Thai & Balinese Cuisine We selected Asian cuisine for taste for our dinner from. We are locals from Jaco, but we do love Asian food. Jareh Restaurant is located just off the main road in the north side of Jaco Beach. A Lovely buidling with a magestic tree.. You can seat opendoor in the main dining room area... Nice brezes. The service and greetings were beyond expectation... All staff was helpfull and polite... The place is very quiet and simply but nicely layed out. We ordered 3 dishes...they all came in good sizes. Enough for two persons. For the first time I would say... the best Thai food I have ever had, beside San Jose, and of course Thailand. Very amazing and authentic taste. A fair selection of drinks are available too. I certainly will come back to this restaurant in the future. Located: Calle Anita, Entre Bar Isaga y JacĂł Club BlĂš Tel: 8359 2067

Get to see many types of birds and crocs up close and personal. Each croc is nicknamed and comes with a "personality perspective". The tour boat driver even gets out of the boat and feeds the crocs... and yes more up close and personal then any of us would do! www.crocodiletour.com Tel: 2637-0795

A “must do” Tour in Tarcoles River If it's crocodiles you want to see, then Jose is the guy who can find and feature them for you. He has named the crocs on the Tarcoles River and introduces them individually as they approach. Osama Bin Laden, a monster who often hides, measures between 19' and 21'. Once found, he allows Jose to lift his tail to the edge of the boat, where you can inspect and help hold the tail. If you dare that is... He speaks English and Spanish. He has a great sense of humour and is very informative. Do this tour if possible, going on a hight tide, and close to sunset.

Croc’s Facts · Crocodiles can live up to 80 years! · The first crocodiles appeared 240 million years ago, at the same time with the dinosaurs (to which they are related). · Crocodiles can swim just with the help of their powerful tail with 40 km (25 mi) per hour, and can stand underwater 2-3 hours.

Costa Rica's Escazú is famous for witchcraft where, historically, people took to mountain caves to secretly practice their religious and magical rituals. Despite being a rich suburb of San José, brujas (witches) can still be found, offering readings of tarot cards and a whole range of “other services.” The annual Carrera de Campo Traviesa Al Cerro Chirripó is a race to the top of Costa Rica’s highest mountain and back. To date, the record time is 3 hours, 15 minutes, and 3 seconds. Guaro, moonshine rum made from distilled sugar cane, is Costa Rica’s indigenous spirit. Cacique is the best brand of guaro, and most people mix guaro with Coca-Cola or Sprite. It is believed that Costa Rica was the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s, Treasure Island Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island is thought to be modeled on Costa Rica's Isla del Coco. Many famous pirates and privateers such as Sir Francis Drake, Captain Edward Davis, William Dampier, and Mary Welch visited the Costa Rican island. Allegedly, they left troves of buried loot, although treasure hunters over the centuries have failed to discover more than a smattering of the purported bounty. Costa Rica abolished its armed forces in 1949 and has no standing military. However, the country still maintains a small force to enforce laws and assist with foreign peacekeeping. Costa Rica’s national symbol is the clay-colored robin known as the yigüirro. Costa Rica’s largest body of freshwater is the manmade Lake Arenal. Arenal Volcano is the most active volcano in Costa Rica and one of the most active in the world. In 1968, Arenal erupted and destroyed the town of Tabacón. It last erupted in 2010. Arenal is the most active and youngest of all the volcanoes in Costa Rica

Ollie’s Point in northeastern Costa Rica was named after American Colonel Oliver North, the famous and felonious former lieutenant colonel at the center of the 1980s Iran-Contra scandal. The beaches and ports of northern Guanacaste like Ollie’s Point were a staging ground for supplying the Nicaraguan Contra rebels. Legend has it that during a news broadcast of an interview with North, some surfers noticed a fabulous point break going off in the background. Hence, the discovery and naming of Ollie’s Point. Each year, Costa Rica hosts what many consider to be the most grueling and challenging mountain bike race on the planet, La Ruta de los Conquistadores (Route of the Conquerors), which retraces the path of the 16th-century Spanish conquistadors from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea—all in 4 days. The race takes place in November and draws hundreds of competitors from around the world. The sun rises and sets in Costa Rica at the same time every day 365 days a year, due to its close proximity to the equator. The Guanacaste (Enterolobium cyclocarpum) is Costa Rica’s national tree. The distinctive tree is known for its broad, full crown, which provides welcome shade on the Guanacaste’s hot plains and savannahs. The tree is also known as the elephant-ear tree because of the distinctive shape of its large seedpods. The province of Guanacaste is named for the tree. In the sleepy town of Manzanillo, Costa Rica, there is a thoroughfare called Mista Cracker Jack Street. Other streets are named after old citizens who have passed on, and Manzanillans call their cemetery “the Ole Buryground.” In 1995, a group of Costa Ricans residing in Nicaragua near the border established the Republic of Airrecú, named for the Maleku Indian word for friendship. The 170-square mile (440-sq km) nation was formed from the belief that the area was mistakenly ceded to Nicaragua, and their president, Augusto Rodríguez, presented documentation on behalf of their claim to the United Nations. Even though Nicaragua has refused to allow the 5,000 residents of Airrecú to secede, the Airrecú movement continues, and they even have a flag and an anthem. The single largest factor affecting Costa Rica’s economy is its national debt. In 1981, the country was the first in the world to default on its loans.
