NEW IN SUMMER 2017 » Summer in Liptovský Mikuláš with a new attractive programme – LET MIKULÁŠ ENTERTAIN YOU The main culture programme on Friday will be opened by a scene of the town history – GET CAUGHT with catchpoles catching a bandit and having him questioned. In the past, lawmen didn´t hesitate to torture the accused to force a confession. The legendary bandit´s captain Juro Jánošík had to undergo such a trial in Liptovský Mikuláš in 1713. The historical atmosphere is emphasised by stalls with craftsmen´s products. A CYCLO & AQUA BUS will operate to the historical centre where the event takes place every Friday in July and August.

» DISCOVER LIPTOVSKÝ MIKULÁŠ IN 7 DIFFERENT WAYS Free 1-hour tours around the historical centre with a guide begin in front of the information centre in July and August every Friday at 04:00pm. Follow a guide with a green umbrella along various thematic sightseeing routes and discover the biggest tourist attractions, famous personalities, artists, still existing traditions and important milestones of the 730-year-long history of the town. Tempting stories help introduce sights such as the synagogue, Museum of Janko Kráľ, Torture chamber of Jánošík and Liptov gallery of P. M. Bohúň.

» THE YEAR OF THE LIPTOV REGION The Liptov regional office was an administrative unit in the Hungarian empire with the same territory as the present region of Liptov. Local aristocracy had the main say in terms of political, military, judicial, legal and other issues. 340 years ago, Liptovský Svätý Mikuláš was suggested as the centre of regional meetings. Over 70 events held during the year of 2017 remind of the glory of the Liptov regional office.

» LIPTOVSKÝ MIKULÁŠ IS SMART – audio guides to sacral monuments From summer 2017, tourists can discover the synagogue of Liptovský Mikuláš with an audio guide and learn that the top of its cupola features colourful stained glass with a central sun motif in the middle of a blue sky, the entrance to the heart of the synagogue – “Aron-ha-Kodesh“ is an imposing gate and a double arch on its top symbolises stone tables of Moses with God´s commandments. In the Church of St. Nicholas, the guide introduces interesting places of this oldest constructional monument in the town. Audio guides are offered in the tourist mobile app of Liptovský Mikuláš.

Discover the 730-year-long history of the town, a replica of the so called Bronze treasure of Ondrašová from the 9th century BC, a precious painting (from around 1710) of aristocrat Pongrác II, who was one of the most influential people in the Hungarian empire in the 15th century, or the famous local tanning industry.

The oldest monument of the town from the 13th century is the biggest Early Gothic construction of the Liptov region. Its biggest jewels include

beautiful stained-glass windows, precious Gothic altars and a stone baptismal font from 1490.

The exposition in the museum underground depicts one of the cruellest trials in the town history when the legendary bandit´s captain Juro Jánošík was imprisoned and sentenced to death in 1713. It presents the biggest collection of works made by an outstanding graphic designer, Koloman Sokol, who was born in Mikuláš and appreciated even by Pablo Picasso.

Visitors are shown around by a guide in a historical costume and learn about the dark era of bandits in an amusing way, have a picture of themselves as real bandits taken, search for Jánošík´s treasure, have a look at gallows or mint Jánošík´s coin for luck.

Inside the biggest building located in the middle of the square, there was the state administration located, and also the district court, a prison and the first museum of the town. The facade is decorated with the coat of arms of the Liptov district and beautiful stained-glass windows designed by Ester Šimerová-Martinčeková, the first lady of Slovak painting art, which leave light through to the staircase area. 9| Our Mother sculpture

– made by an eminent personality of Hungarian sculpting art, Alojz Štróbl, who was born in the Liptov region, is recorded at the Louvre museum in Paris as one of the most flawless sculptures in the world. Its bronze casting is displayed in front of Liptov gallery of P. M. Bohúň in Tranovského ulica (street).

The only specialised museum of its kind in Slovakia (1,400 m2) with interactive expositions: “The karst and caves of Slovakia” and “Protected nature in Slovakia” with sections “Earth – a place for living” and “Man, mountains, NATURA 2000”. Use an audio guide and learn about our nature. The observation tower offers a view of dominant features of the town and the panorama of surrounding mountains.

Rumanský Art Centre

Works of two brothers – academic painters Ivan and Igor Rumanský in a unique private gallery which is special due to its architectonic design.

Church of St. Peter of Alcantara The imposing architectonic complex of a church and a monastery, which count among the most significant medieval monuments in our territory, creates a perfect harmony on the bank of the Váh river in the town part of Okoličné. G11

The atmosphere of summer days is emphasised by events of the Summer of Mikuláš in the historical centre – film screening in the garden of the Museum of Janko Kráľ on Wednesdays as well as Friday evenings called “Let Mikuláš entertain you”. Besides great fun, it includes a short theatre performance called “Get caught”. Saturdays and Sundays are mainly about music and children will love fairytale performances.

Visitors of the water parks in the region of Liptov and other tourist resorts can use Cyclo & Aqua Buses in July and August to enjoy the Friday programme of “Let Mikuláš entertain you”.

An easy ride along a cycle route in clean environment of the longest Slovak river from the bridge of Palúdzka to the bridge of Okoličné (4.3 km, 2 cyclo-shelters along the route). Several cycle routes run from there to the area of the Tatras.

Bike rental

Beautiful views The cycle route runs from the train station along the railroad to the Háj Nicovô hill. After a moderate ascent, cyclists are rewarded with beautiful panoramic views of the Liptov region. The route is about 4 km long (cycloshelter for having a rest) and one can continue from there to the villages of Smrečany and Žiar, which are located under the majestic Western Tatras.
