THE PERFECT ADDITION
This season’s MAGIC New York footwear and accessories brands offered styling and stories that were truly unique.

THE BEAD GOES ON
With a nod toward the luxe casual trend, many accessories brands included gorgeous, elevated beaded styling as a part of their seasonal assortments. For brands like Ethic Goods, this construction not only represents a trend, but also an important tenet of their design ethos. “Our products are more than just jewelry - they are a story to tell - and they make a difference in the lives of the women who are creating them,” said Bethany Strumpell, Co-Owner, Ethic Goods.“For buyers looking to add sustainable brands to their assortment, merchandising in a way that tells the story behind the brand makes all the difference.”
CRAZY FOR COLOR
Standout styling on the show floor was especially expressed in bold palettes of optimistic colors. In jewelry, OMG Blings shared a daring display of a rainbow of colorful chains and opticals. In bags, cools ruled, with brands like ili New York offering shades of blues across backpacks and carryables. In footwear, Vanessa Vitiello, East Coast Sales Rep for Matisse says, “For Spring 23 one of our major themes was Y2K. We incorporated lots of pop colors like hot pink, orange, bright blues and greens. We are also seeing a major interest in more dress looks and metallics.”

MATISSE
HEAVY ON METALS
Silver and gold jewelry styling took a new point of view this season, with many collections offering unique hardware silhouettes or concepts. Others explored functionality and movement within their pieces. For Naomi Traimer, Owner, Meditation Rings, her collection of metaldriven jewelry gives the wearer meaning within its styling. “Our brand helps people restore a sense of peace and calmness, and can help reduce anxiety and negative thinking… [as well as being] inspiring and fun; each ring has its own name and special meaning.” Meant to be spun while wearing to bring good luck and peace, the collection is a chic but functional offering with purpose.
SURFACE INTEREST
Those seeking top trends for the upcoming season can go surface deep, as embellishments, rare materials, and bold print direction were thematically critical for brands. “While our brand leans more towards slow fashion, we really wanted to highlight our signature materials,” said Alana Oates, Creator, Llani. “It centers around traditional techniques, so every item has a feeling of hand craft. Our proprietary block printed leather accessories ground the collection in prints.” With additional styling including hand-sewn embellishments and decorative appliqués, the brand was a key offering to those looking for the feeling of rare and eclectic design trends for spring.

“TRUST IN YOUR MISSION” FASHION MEETS INNOVATION
The launch of emerging brands often starts with the drive to fill a void in the market. And staying true to that passion is essential to a brand’s growth. Take SIIA Cosmetics as an example, a brand that offers skinfriendly and inclusive cosmetics. As Avery Finch, Director of Marketing + Digital Operations, The J+K Group, representing SIIA Cosmetics advises, “Stay on top of trends, listen to your customers, provide an inclusive assortment, and most importantly, trust in your mission and why you started your business to begin with. Be strong in your company and be open in your ability to try new brands, to offer your customers unique products and experiences they can’t find anywhere else.”
While trend cycles are continuous, product innovations are also developed through needs arising from a rapidly changing world. Brands like Luxury Heirs, which combine clear handbag silhouettes –a requirement at many large venues and schools – with upcycled pieces of authentic luxury handbags to create a unique approach to this growing standard. “It’s about taking a necessity and infusing a little bit of glitz and trend,” said Jami Graham, Co-Founder, Luxury Heirs. “Just about every concert, show, sporting event, etc. requires a clear bag and it doesn’t matter [who she is], our customers want to make sure their outfit is tied together even down to her bag. You can grab a clear purse anywhere, but we use pieces of authentic luxury handbags upcycled onto a clear bag to elevate the clear bag requirement.”

SLOW IT DOWN
For some new and emerging brands, a return to more traditional production practices is what sets them apart. Artisanal craftsmanship is a critical tenet for OSAY Co-Founders Kenza Fourati and Simone Carrica. “Our customer is... on her feet all day long, needing ultimate comfort but still appreciates sustainability, ethics, and most importantly exceptional pieces that she wouldn’t see on everyone else,” the co-founders explained.
For Malgorzata Jarosińska and her brand MARLU, thoughtful practices from material sourcing to garment creation give her pieces purpose and longevity. “We must remember that today’s problems require from us clothing manufacturers to be particularly sensitive to the issues of sustainable development, in particular environmental protection. MARLU is a brand that goes in this direction, offering products that can be worn for years... Our clients do not have to change clothes every season, thus contributing to further littering our planet and depleting its priceless resources. We believe that beautiful things will always defend themselves.”

FORECASTING GREEN

GET HAPPY
The union of material interest, distinctive bright palettes, and optimistic palettes align well for brands designing into the SS ‘23 thematic trend of bold optimism. “We focus heavily on upcycling, taking left over scrap material and rather than sending it off to the landfill, we creatively turn scraps into small goods and bags,” said Natashka Manthen, Director of Sales, America + Beyond.
These styles, crafted from mixes of color and textured materials, then make for richly bold collections. Sara Passaglia, Designer and Stylist, Virechic, has also designed into brights this season, using a similar ethos of conscientious creation. “The motto of my brand is reuse, rethink, and remake. All our accessories are made using this motto, so we make pieces using recycled material or natural fiber, to reduce as much as possible the impact on the planet.”
For Lina Cristancho, CCO, Co-Creative Director, and Co-Founder, Stivali, MAGIC New York allows the brand to give buyers a necessary in-person review of material interest that also comes from a sustainable practice. “During the shows we are able to show first hand the different leathers that we have, all of them by products from the food industry, and we can share as well the more environmentally friendly options, like heavy-metals-free leathers that have softer finishes, amazing breathability and incredible comfort features,” she said.

SEASONAL BUT CHIC
Customers looking for updates to their raffia and straw bag and hat collections this season are shopping into trends of elevated trims and silhouettes that work from the beach to the city streets, like those from Gyal Bashy, whose travel-focused customer is always seeking getaway apparel and accessories with a sustainable point of view. “It is so important to us to show at MAGIC New York. We love introducing sustainable clothing to buyers and connect with those who already have sustainability in mind...Your customers are learning to make better choices; be ahead of their decision making,” said Claire Nelson, Fashion Marketing Associate, Gyal Bashy.

NATURALLY INSPIRED
Not just inspired by earth-aware practices and materials, some of the biggest trends from the sustainable brands at MAGIC New York also focused on motifs and prints straight from the natural world. Brands like Filamental dug into groovy themes like mushrooms, while lifestyle brand Sur La Vague combined punchy bright palettes, breezy ethically sourced materials, and allover floral prints.
“Our typical customer loves a good style and print, while taking into consideration where our products are being sourced and the quality of product being made,” said Wendi Kaplan, Wholesale Director, Sur La Vague. “Our colorful textiles are created by artisans using traditional hand-blocking methods passed down through generations!”
For JoAnne Lord, Founder, Mali + Lili Accessories, seasonal animal-inspired prints in neutral palettes served as one print focus for SS ‘23, created on sustainable, cruelty-free materials. She noted that MAGIC New York serves as the perfect event to share “designs, materials, and company values [such as] recycled materials and better packaging with new and existing customers.”
