Karen’s Letter Well Autumn is finally here and we can all pull out all those lovely clothes we love to snuggle into and those gorgeous boots and tights. For me, I look forward to turning on the fire in our relaxation area, so cosy and relaxing. I got a taste of this in March on my Thalgo conference in France. What a treat and a great excuse to visit Paris and Nice. I have included in this issue some pictures from my trip showing the inside secrets to our number 1 product range, and also what we got up to! The top salons from around Australia were invited to the spectacular event. I was very honoured to be one of the people chosen.

Health Watch: A His What is Mother’s Day and why do we celebrate it on different dates around the world. Mother’s Day, or Mothering Sunday as it is known in the UK, is celebrated all over the world on different dates. In Australia it is celebrated on the second Sunday in May – this year it falls on the 14th May. But in Britain it is held on the fourth Sunday of Lent – 30th March was this years date.

So where did Mother’s Day come from? Australia always seems to follow trends from around the world. And our date aligns with America. In the U.S its origins date back to the creation of Mother’s Group, whose sons had fought in the Civil War. The American date was formalised in 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson.

It was chosen after a campaign by one woman, Anna Jarvis, whose own mother died in May 1907.

The origin of the British date is a little more complicated. Some believe that Mothering Sunday may have originally derived from a 16th century practise of visiting the ‘mother church’ – the main church in the region – on Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent. Historically this was also a time when domestic servants were given time off the visit families.

Modern day Mother’s Day was brought back by a 20th century British woman named Constance Smith who was inspired by the campaign Jarvis had lead in the US. In 1920 Smith published a booklet entitled ‘The revival of Mothering Sunday’ under the pseudonym C.Penswich Smith. Things snowballed from there and by 1938 “Mothering Sunday’ was celebrated in every parish in Britain and in every country of the Empire”. Cordelia Moyes says, a historian of the International Christian Charity, the Mothers Union.

What Can I and What Can Pregnancy is a time when young women start focussing in the quality of products that they use on their face and their body. Being ultimately responsible for the safety of their unborn child, their choices are influenced by understanding exactly which ingredients are safe to use on the skin.

The truth is that there are many high quality products on the market that can be safely used during pregnancy. However the skin is a highly absorbent surface and the average woman absorbs over 2 kgs of what many formulators consider ‘questionable’ ingredients through her skin each year. It is therefore essential to cut through the media myths and understand the truth behind safe skincare during pregnancy.

A lot of women find they are more prone to irritation during pregnancy so we recommend they avoid ingredients, such as alcohol based products and highly perfumed products. There are many products that we apply to the skin that have the capability of reaching the bloodstream and may be able to cross the placenta. Although many are safe there are still a number of ingredients that may be harmful to the growing baby.

Here are some broad outlines for safe skin care during pregnancy: • Ingredients not recommended for human application due to their questionable safety profile.

• As a rule if it is not safe for non-pregnant women, then it is not safe for a pregnant mother.

• Multiple studies have been carried out on various skin care ingredients that may be potentially dangerous. While it is not necessary to panic if you have been using them, I personally choose not to use them with clients.

• Parabens and other formaldehyde cloner preservatives.

• Chemical sunscreens (minerals zinc oxide and titanium dioxide – non nanosize preferred.)

n’t I - When I am Pregnant • Phthalates • Sodium Laureth, Sulphate / SLS foaming agents (known irritants) Phthalates are fragrance additives. They are often not listed on fragrance labels as cosmetic companies are only required to list the items as ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfume’ and not the individual constituents of a fragrance. There have been studies that have shown that exposure to phthalates are often added to artificial fragrances to make the scent last longer. It is also used in hair sprays to make hair more bouncy and less stiff. A number of formulators do not use phthalates or artificial fragrance and choose to use pure essential oils as a natural fragrance.

Ingredients that are specifically not recommended during pregnancy – although we are listing ingredients to avoid it is purely a cautious approach because obviously scientists are unable to test these products.

• Vitamin A (Retinols) This product improves cell renewal, reducing wrinkles and reducing sun damage. Scientific studies performed years ago showed that if vitamin A is taken orally (not topically) during pregnancy, crossed the placenta and were harmful to the foetus. However there has been no sustainable evidence showing A is harmful during pregnancy. However – we believe it is better to avoid this ingredient. But please don’t panic if you have used this product as there is no documentation confirming that it will cause birth defects.

• Commonly used Vitamin A ingredients: • Medical (prescription only) retinoids • Diffein / adepelene • Retin A / Renova / Tretinoin • Tazorac / tazarotene • Retinol acid

What Can I and What Can • Retinaldehyde

Salicylic or Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) Salicylic Acid is an exfoliating BHA and is excellent for unblocking pores and addressing skin redness. It is in the same family as aspirin, an ingredient that is not recommended during pregnancy. Studies have shown this could cause birth defects and other pregnancy disorders. Although in skin care it would be a fraction of the amount, prevention is always best.

Soy Soy is an estrogenic ingredient which can influence female levels. It is not harmful to the baby but will stimulate melasma (large dark pigment patches on the face) soy could worsen this condition.

So avoid – soy based skin care; textured vegetable protein; lecithin.

Essential oils.

Essential oils are extremely powerful herbal concentrates that have been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years.

It is considered safe to apply low concentrations (less than 0.3%) of essential oils in skin care products, on the face only or in rinse products such as shampoos and conditioners. Avoid essential oils on large areas and never apply non diluted essential oils directly onto the skin during pregnancy. Only essential oils that are safe during pregnancy are: Lavender; orange; ylang ylang; neroli; eucalyptus; tea tree; mauka; cypress; sandlewood; patchouli; geranium; rose geranium; chamomile; peppermint and rose.

Makeup We like to use mineral makeup because it is free from artificial colours and parabens.

Natural zinc oxide will act aas a broad spectrum sunscreen (UVA and B) and this is essential during pregnancy. Mineral makeup sit on top of the skin and do not contain

n’t I - When I am Pregnant ingredients that enter the bloodstream and may be potentially damaging to cells. Le Beau uses and recommends Youngblood Mineral Makeup.

Skin Care During pregnancy we like to move our clients to the Thalgo Certified Organic Range as it removes all those potentially harmful ingredients. The range has a base of olive oil and almond.

Sunscreen There are many questions regarding the effects of chemicals found in sunscreen which absorbs into the skin. Tests have shown these chemicals to be present in the blood stream just a few hours following application.

Choose one with Zinc Oxide and non-nanophased titanium dioxide (mineral) sunscreens as these protect from UVA and UVB’s.

The skin is even more vulnerable during pregnancy and requires nurturing, hydration and sun protection. Naturally derived oils, Vitamin B, C’s AHA’s such as lactic acid and hyaluronic acid are all recommended to replenish and renew the skin during pregnancy. There are many excellent products available at Le Beau for pregnant women. So avoid questionable ingredients and use natural mineral based sunscreens. You need to take care during this very special time in your life.

Thalgo Conferen I was honoured and extremely grateful to have been invited on a trip to France with Thalgo in March. This trip was amazing. There were all the Top Spa’s and Salons (2014) from around Australia and we are very pleased to say 4 were from Perth – of course!

The trip began in Paris on a Sunday afternoon. We were treated to a dinner river cruise showing off all of Paris in lights. On Monday morning we were off to training, don’t worry we didn’t really work that hard. We were treated to a 1 ½ hour massage, facial and sauna.

The Thalgo organisers gave up 1 hour to get ready for a gala night at the Moulin Rouge – an amazing show – can’t unfortunately say the same for the food – give that a big miss if you are planning on going. Big Tip – ask for your seat to be right at the front in the middle, totally worth it!

Tuesday morning at 6 we were all up and ready to catch the train to Cannes. A quick 5 hours – and what a chatty lot we therapists are – it only felt like 1 hour! When we arrived there we had to check in and then we were given the afternoon to hit the shops – I think most of us made a bee-line for Zara.

Dinner was with the amazing Thalgo France team in a traditional French Restaurant.

Presented by the Director of Thalgo Bernard Sirop, we were introduced to all the new products and treatments. The new Breakthrough Technology and Ingredients were presented by the amazing woman who does all the researched, Dominique Pradines.

The following afternoon we were treated to a tour of the laboratories, which for me was like visiting Disneyland! Here was a product that I have been using and have loved for over 17 years and I am seeing the inside workings of this amazing product.

Ok, now it was time to play. We were taken on a treat to the Les Arcs for wine tasting in Chateau Saunte Rosline, well worth the visit.

Thursday 21st March was our free day to explore. It was a day most of us would never forget. A small group of us decided to visit Nice and it was such an adventure. We jumped on an express train and we ended up somewhere with no way back, not realising that this was going to be the case.

My thanks to a beautiful young French girl who could not speak a word of English who saved us. Being able to understand the information that was given over the P.A system,

nce in France 2014 she made us go on a massive run, through the train station, up and down stairs following her. She eventually lead us to the correct train station for us to get home, we were blessed to have met her! What a fantastic day finished off in a pretty French restaurant on the banks of the Riviera!

Friday was our last day and our lovely Thalgo guides Nichola and Kim took us to Monaco, what an amazing place. Sat we had to pack because our adventure was over and it was back to our beautiful families.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank BLC cosmetics and Nichola and Kim for organising and amazing trip. I felt extremely honoured to be one of the spa’s who were included in this amazing event. Fingers crossed for next year!

Heat oven to 200 C /fan 180C / gas. Arrange the mushrooms on a baking tray. Scatter over the cheese, walnuts, thyme sprigs and butter. You can do up to this stage a day in advance.

2. Pop in the oven and cook for 10mins until the cheese is melted and the mushrooms are softened. Arrange some rocket leaves on plates and place the mushrooms on top.

Autumn Vegetable Soup with Cheesy Toasts Ingredients • 1 leek, chopped quite small • 2 carrots, chopped quite small • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped • 1 potato, chopped quite small • 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh rosemary • ½ tsp sugar • 410g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed • 3 tbsp chopped fresh parsley • 2 x 400g cans chopped Italian tomatoes • 425ml ¾ pint vegetable stock • For the toasts • 8 slices of baguette, cut on the diagonal • 1 garlic clove, cut in half • 50g edam, finely grated

2. Preheat the grill to high. Whizz the tomatoes in a food processor or blender until smooth, then tip into the vegetables with the chickpeas and parsley. Gently heat through, stirring now and then.

3. For the toasts; rub both sides of the bread with the garlic. Grill on one side until golden, turn the bread over, cover with edam and grill until it’s bubbling. Serve at once with the piping hot soup.

Apple and Blackberry Crumble Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • •

For the crumble topping 120g plain flour 60g caster sugar 60g unsalted butter at room temperature, cut into pieces For the fruit compote 300g Braeburn apples 30g unsalted butter 30g sugar 115g blackberries ¼ tsp ground cinnamon Vanilla ice cream to serve

Method 1. Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas. Tip the flour and sugar into a large bowl. Add the butter, then rub into the flour using your fingertips to make a light breadcrumb texture. Do not overwork it or the crumble will become heavy. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over a baking sheet and bake for 15 mins or until lightly coloured.

2. Meanwhile, for the compote, peel, core and cut the apples into 2cm dice. Put the butter and sugar in a medium saucepan and melt together over a medium heat. Cook for 3 minutes until the mixture turns to a light caramel. Stir in the apples and cook for 3 mins.

Add the blackberries and cinnamon and cook for 3 min more. Cover, remove from the heat, then leave for 2-3 mins to continue cooking in the warmth of the pan.

3. To serve, spoon the warm fruit into an ovenproof gratin dish, top with the crumble mix, then reheat in the oven for 5-10 min. Serve with vanilla ice cream.

What is Japanese face massage?

Parabens a problem?

If you keep a close eye on beauty product packaging you may have noticed the phrase ‘paraben free’. Most people are aware that they are better off using a product that is free from parabens but they don’t actually know what they are and why we should choose to avoid them.

Parabens are a group of chemicals that are used as preservatives in cosmetics products to prevent microbial growth. This as two actions.

The first being that is prolongs the shelf life of products and ensure the viability of the product. There are many different types of parabens in products, with the most common being methylbuty or prophyl parabens.

Since 2004 studies have shown that parabens showed up in brest tumours. However this study did not prove or suggest that the parabens caused the tumours and what the paraben levels where in normal tissues. After further extensive research since this study, the consensus was that the parabens are used in such low levels that it is implausible that is would cause a tumour.

The other problem is that parabens have some oestrogen like activity and could therefore stimulate and oestrogen driven tumour. The oestrogen activity of parabens is at least 10 000 times less than the naturally occurring oestrogen in the body, so again is very unlikely to be causative.

However, parabens can cause irritation and sensitivity when used topically, though this is not common because of the low concentrations used.

But if you believe you are better off safe than sorry there is an ever increasing number of companies who are removing these parabens in response to consumer concern and the desire for a more natural based beauty routine.
