Health Watch: I am just too Every change of season people’s skin changes due to external and internal envirWhen I was 24 years old and at the prime of my life, new business going better than I ever expected, working hard in my first salon in Lywood I had for 4 years and opened my new business in Kardinya ‘Le Beau Day Spa’ I had had no time off since I had left university four and a half years ago but I was happy and loved what I did, working 6 days meant long hours, book work, stock take and pickups were all done after hours and on Sunday, But I had no kids and was young, all was ok-well so I thought.

After a while I began we feel like I was on a train that I just could not get off of- I didn’t know how to stop. I had suffered with headaches for 12 months consistently so often that most of the time I would not recognize I even had one ‘But that’s fine- I am 24, healthy it’s just from being so busy’ well not so! I n late 1997 my body said no more-The train is stopping whether I liked it or not, And well it did stop.

The lack of covering for myself and the belief of ‘I am ok, and I’m supposed to work hard when I am young’ Well yes this might be true but, I was not invincible. I learnt a valuable lesson. With all this rushing and long hours I was not actually doing any good for anyone. When I stopped and had time to think about it-I had realized you can not really take care of anyone else when you cannot even take care of yourself.

I was in my newly opened salon working when my left leg completely gave away, I was unable to support my body and become paralyzed. I had no control.

As quick as it occurred it was gone about 15 minute later the same, my arm and then my face, One of our long term clients-and who is still our client to this day told me to go to the doctors . Although still not taking it very seriously, I made an appointment for the end of my working week. The doctor saw no visible signs of anything-the next day I had 25 makeup’s to do for the Lynwood High school ball and there was no way I would let them girls down.

o busy!-My story-my reality While doing makeup’s I realized I could not see her face properly it was a blur. I blinked my eyes and looked again, I could not focus. I did not want the girls to panic so I was able to apply the bases and even the eyes but the lips well now that were going to be a tough one. My assistant, who I was luckily enough put on to give me a hand, had to apply everyone’s lips and check the blending. This weekend happened to be a long weekend and by the end of the weekend. I was unable to maneuver my left leg very well. I was unable to get in and out of the car or go up the stairs without assisting my leg in the move meant, By Tuesday I was in royal Perth hospital diagnosed with a burst hematoma the size of a gold ball with brain tissue swelled around itTicking like a time bomb! It was a long week, doctor trying to decide whether it was safe to go in, 50/50 chance of success, by this time I was wheelchair bound. Before my operation it was explained to me the risks involved I would need to learn to walk again and possible talk again, Months of rehab would be more than likely ahead of me!

Well I have to say the angles took great care of me and my operation was a successful. Beyond the doctors expectations not 1 day of rehab, I am still uncoordinated in an aerobics class (it seems quite funny) I learnt my lesson that I was not a machine, and I nearly was not going to be here to keep taking care of people –My passion, to make a difference to people’s lives and make life just a little easier is strong for me. I truly believe we need to take time for ourselves even it is only 1 hour a month- It’s not a luxury but a necessity and we owe that to our loved ones. We need to change out mindset , women always feel guilty the reality is if you do not learn to take care of yourself or learn to say no-no one is going to say thank you for it- you are the only person who can take care of you! Truth is no-one cares if you are martyr.

Health Watch: I am just too I can hear you already shouting… how do I decrease my workload without losing control, my job, keep kids organized, on top of the washing, get everything done and so it goes on and on….

The obvious solution is time management – You still might say that is not the solution BUT when I was sick I was concerned if I was not at my salon everyday and every hour, it would go broke – but I was so wrong – the salon improved so quickly – I was able to see things more clearly. I was not so bogged down- I had stepped back and could see things I had not before, so by letting go a little was the best thing I could have done.

Now 18 years later, I still have the same routine, I take 2 days off out of my spa – one to do business stuff and running around and the other for me!

I made myself a promise at the beginning of the spring last year, after reading an article about modern women and the pressure we put on our own selves. We put emphasis on how important we are on how busy we are. We are almost competing. It is funny after reading the article I recognized how true this actually was.

When women speak to each other and say “How are you going?” Responses would most often be something like “Oh my I have been so crazy, I have been ….”

Then the second woman would say “Me too... Today I have to…..” and the gentle competitive conversation is off and racing.

I made a promise to myself to stand back and not engage in it anymore.. It is incredible how when you decide to slow your life down, how everything still gets done with time to spare (which did not happen before) and less stress. I find I am enjoying everything I do so much more and

Last year I was like most people, feeling run down, stressed or just not that happy and feeling too tired and have no energy to do everything I wanted to do. I am amazed at the extra spare time I have – never before did I get an afternoon to sit on my deck and read a book! – Do Now! With no guilt! Even if it is only half an hour, it is such a great feeling to stop!

So it is now time for you to look at what you are doing. The first step is to start nurturing yourself and others will take care of you too.

Also, if you are feeling strong, happy, energized and healthy, you will be able to do so much more in 24 hours than when you were stressed, tired and over it! You tend to spend lots of time going around in circles and being somewhat unorganized because of the stress.

It worked for me – but ultimately it has to work for you! Do whatever makes you happy.

My lively hood depends on looking good and feeling good or others would not want to come to my spa for treatments and wellbeing benefits. So at the end of the day, I have had to find a way to “Make time” to take care of myself with supplements, time out and good skin care treatments.

o busy!-My story-my reality • Hang out with my son at the skate park It is amazing how everything changes when you take care of yourself. The secret is simplicity. Do the things that make you happy and don’t do those things that don’t clutter up your life like your house = cluttered mind.

Remember • Be organized and stay simple • I find that when my energy is relaxed- so are the people around me, and when you are relaxed it brings out the best in everyone.

• When you take care of yourself and have an increased feeling of self worth, so do the people around you.

• We attract what we feel. I feel good you attract the same kind of people.

Know For A Healthy Skin This Winter What active ingredients should you be looking for to nourish winter skin?

This in turn helps to crowd out any unhealthy bacteria and yeasts. Fresh fruit and lots of vegetables also provide great fibre, along with legumes, nuts and seeds.

3. Colourful fruit and vegetables - at Congress one speaker said we should “Eat a Rainbow a Day”. Sounds kind of daggy but I liked the image it provides (see the image on this page). Make sure you have lots of different coloured veggies and fruit on the menu each day to cover all the fabulous phytonutrients they provide. As a guide, two to three pieces of fruit and at least 4 cups vegetables per day is the goal.

4. Fish high in omega 3s - the best fish to eat are the smallest as they are the lowest in the fish food chain and therefore less affected by mercury. Choose wild-caught salmon, and sardines, mackerel and herring for the most omega 3s. The oils in these fish have antiinflammatory actions, improve the health of the body’s cell membranes, aid in neurotransmitter health improving mood, and help reduce heart disease risk.

We returned this year to The Esplanade by Rydges in Fremantle and once again enjoyed a delicious breakfast.

Maggie Dent returned for an encore performance as our guest speaker and did not disappoint. She made us laugh and cry (well the ducks did) and talked about not wasting time and energy trying to be someone or something we are not. We will now all be saying “That’s interesting” a lot!

The auctions were a big hit. Tiny Holly was back with his irreverent humour but had everyone laughing and helped to raise an amazing $12 615!

The mystery balloons once again sold out, despite us almost doubling the number. The massive ‘pop off’ caused much laughter and excitement as the mystery prizes were revealed!

We had 100% participation in the Reverse Raffle, and with more guests and more tables than ever before one lucky table pocketed over $1200 with the same amount being added to our tally.

Dear Karen I am writing to sincerely thank you for your generous support of the ninth and final Yvonne Baker Memorial Breakfast. The event this year was held on International Women’s Day – 8th March - at the Esplanade by Rydges Fremantle. We hosted over 480 guests and raised an amazing $35 819 which has been forwarded on to the Cancer Council of Western Australia.

Our best ever fundraising result would not have been possible without contributions such as the products generously donated by Le Beau. The items were used in our mega-raffle which raised almost $5 000 for the Cancer Council of WA. I have attached a flyer showcasing the event.

Many people look at their mums and dad and assume they will look the same, My mum at 63 does not have many deep wrinkles, so instead of hoping for this trait, I went and got my DNA tested to see if science could give me any clues about how my skin would age. Sound extreme? It is now going to be the norm as it is the only true way to scientifically determine and recommend skin care treatments and products to our clients; it takes the guess work out of the equation and wrong diagnosis made.

DNA testing helps people spend their skin care dollars in a more purposeful way. It does not matter how expensive a product is, if it does not work for you-it’s a waste of money.
