Helping Kids Grow Up Safe, Healthy & Drug-Free Since 1982

2010 ANNUAL REPORT

Chairman of the Board Dear Friends and Community Members, What a tremendous honor it has been to serve as Chairman of Informed Families/The Florida Family Partnership. It is difficult to believe that 20 years have passed since my friend Jeff Roberts invited me and my wife Paula to be his guests at the illustrious Informed Families Dinner at Joe’s. The event was one of the greatest social/charitable functions I had ever been to and it still is today. However, the main reason I am so passionate about this important organization is because our mission of helping kids grow up safe, healthy and drug free touches every walk of life. No race, gender or ethnic group is immune to the devastation caused by addiction.

Michael T. Fay Board Chairman

My two children, ages eight and twelve, are growing up in a rapidly changing environment and I want to do everything in my power to keep them safe and healthy. Informed Families empowers me and other parents to take a more active role in our children’s lives, providing us with the resources and know-how to be able to quickly and effectively respond to issues our children are facing, from prescription drug abuse and overexposure to unhealthy media messages to cyberbullying and sexting. Informed Families helps all of us work together to become better and more involved parents. As a businessman and a father, I know that prevention is the wisest investment we can make for our children. Every $1 spent in prevention saves a minimum of $17 in treatment and other services, not to mention the loss of life and the emotional toll that addiction takes on families and communities. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow board members, staff, volunteers, donors and partners who work together to build a safety net for our children. As our fearless leader, Peggy Sapp, often says, “our children have the right to grow up drug free and we have the responsibility to make that happen.”

Sincerely,

Message from the President Dear Friends, Parents are the key to drug prevention because parents head their families and are the citizens that run the community. As President & CEO of Informed Families/The Florida Family Partnership and the Volunteer President of the National Family Partnership, I meet with local, statewide and national stakeholders to determine how best to deliver the latest prevention research to parents, schools, businesses and communities. Our agency helps individuals understand the interaction between themselves and society, in order to effectively change environments. Ultimately, we want to help people make healthy choices and create healthy communities.

Peggy B. Sapp President & CEO

Today, many concerned and outspoken parents feel outnumbered and unpopular, versus empowered and connected to something larger. Parents frequently feel isolated and would often choose apathy over action. If we see a two-year-old in the street, we would drop everything and bring that child to safety without thinking twice about it. Yet, if we see a neighbor’s teenage child buying a six-pack of beer at the local convenience store, we might hesitate to do something about it to avoid appearing “uncool or angering the child or his/her parents. This is why parents need Parent Peer Groups. Parents need each other for support. They also need each other in order to change attitudes and counteract the societal pressures that condone and promote youth drug and alcohol use and abuse. It takes a village to raise a child, but ultimately without parents at the forefront, the village is powerless. Together, we must encourage parents to work together to prevent underage drinking and drug abuse.

Sincerely,

Environmental Change The South Miami Drug-Free Coalition was founded in 2003 by Informed Families to reduce drinking and drug use in South Miami, particularly among youth. Coalition members represent business, government, health care, law enforcement, media, schools, faith community, youth, parents and others. The Coalition is funded by the Drug Free Communities Support Program Grant, Office of National Drug Control Policy, Executive Office of the President and the STOP Act Grant.

The South Miami Coalition: »» Delivered underage drinking prevention messages to 2,400 students at South Miami Senior High through a Social Norms campaign called “Cobrawesomeness.” »» Trained 200 faculty in signs and symptoms of marijuana use. »» Through community events, reached over 1,200 people with information on alcohol’s effect on the brain, the dangers of marijuana use and facts on other drug use.

South Miami Drug-Free Coalition

»» Launched Project Sticker Shock to remind adults not to provide alcohol to minors. »» Raised over $20,000 through the King Pins Challenge, a bowling fundraiser at Splitsville attended by 300 guests, featuring Tim Hardaway. “Through the Social Norms campaign at my school, I was surprised that there were 100 other people who don’t drink, let alone 1,248. The biggest lesson I learned was that you are never alone. If you feel passionately about something there’s always a group of other people who feel the same way. To me “Cobrawesomeness” means that I’m proud to make my own decisions about whether or not I drink.”

As a nurse and a parent, I’m proud of the work the Coalition does to make South Miami a safer, healthier place for everyone, whether we’re working with parents, students, business owners or our partners in law enforcement. The programs we deliver help to further the mission of the hospital, and we couldn’t be more pleased to be working with Informed Families.
